Where did the file go? Probably this can just be deleted if there's no longer any contents for it to hold - I only created it as it was a 'phantom' category (it had files in it, but didn't actually exist). Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 07:07, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Empty. Ask for suppression. Sammyday (talk) 10:10, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What is the hurry? There is a WP article; files may come. --E4024 (talk) 04:06, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There "was" a file, which has been suppressed. It was alone. So we don't have even a file, the category is useless - we can still recreated if we'll have a new file (I have very big doubts about it). Sammyday (talk) 20:25, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Then you probably need to delete the 2 files in the category, while having 2 files might not be enough if the topic isn't notable its best to just seek deletion of the files first and if they're deleted then this will be deleted as empty. Crouch, Swale (talk) 09:07, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The title should have "Bursa" before the rest of the text as there is a same-named museum in Istanbul (and maybe in other towns). Dosseman (talk) 11:18, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Dosseman: we have Category:Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum (in Istanbul). So this one should be named to "Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum in Bursa"?--Estopedist1 (talk) 05:34, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Estopedist1: Yes, I think that is the best. I myself use a places name first, but see the logic (also for searches) to place that last, as "in ...". Could you do the renaming, I do not have the knowledge to do so. By the wayː I copied your "ping" command, but do not quite know where to find instructions on its use (I found some pages, but with so much texts, I shudder). In shortː did I do it right, this time? Dosseman (talk) 08:37, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dosseman: yes, you pinged correctly. Instructions are here: {{Ping}}. I also prefer the name "Bursa Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum", but the phrase "Bursa Turkish and ..." seems a bit awkward?--Estopedist1 (talk) 09:01, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Estopedist1: Thanks for instructions and agreement. I take it the name will be as suggested, "Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum in Bursa", which will be fine. I have started to use Turkish as a service to Turkish speakers, but do prefer the English name, as that's the language I use most on the web. For as far as I'm concerned, the discussion can be closed, waiting for a renaming. Dosseman (talk) 09:16, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Dosseman: now, we have to wait 2 weeks. And if no objections during this period, then renaming of this category and its subcategories can be done--Estopedist1 (talk) 11:57, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Estopedist1: I'm a patient man, the wait is no problem. I'm glad you helped me get through this process, I learned some things. I may get back to you if I run into some other problem. Bye. Dosseman (talk) 17:43, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Dosseman: , if you wish to continue making cat titles in Turkish, please ask help from a native speaker, for example User:Gargarapalvin, as your Turkish is not yet at the level to do what you nobly want to do. I mean I appreciate that you want to use the original Turkish names. As regards this title, of course firstly the capitalization must be corrected, as well as the word "İslam" (not Islam, that reminds me of a köfte variety in Turkish cuisine :). I prefer not to translate proper names, just as our colleagues from Portuguese speaking countries, and with your permission I will move this cat to "Category:Bursa Türk ve İslam Eserleri Müzesi". Of course we can also make an RD in English, with the exact translation of the original museum name. Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 20:45, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@E4024: I see your points. I myself will generally try and use English category names, as indeed my Turkish needs improving. There is an element of laziness too: introducing Turkish letters can be hell, I often have to switch in Word to “insert” mode, then finding the proper letter. A word with three or more Turkish letters costs me a minute extra. I did not understand your reference to a kind of köfte, could you explain? Being Dutch and mainly reading English “Islam” without a dot on the “I” looks quite natural, so I tend to use that in Turkish also. As for not translating proper names, I tend to prefer to use the English translations, as those are the ones I find in the websites I check, the travel guides I use, and on my own site. Often there is an entry in the English Wikipedia in that language (the Istanbul one for instance is “Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts”), though I find the search engine of the Wikipedia is excellent, so one will find “Türk ve İslam Eserleri Müzesi” too. I have a girlfriend in Istanbul who teaches English and did translations on my site, whom I can ask for advice, so I’ll not contact Gargarapalvin. It may be a missed opportunity, as I saw some picture by this person, that are well-done and show a similar eye for detail as I claim to have. I’m in two minds now because I’m about to create an Edirne Türk ve İslam Eserleri Müzesi category, using pictures I have had on a so-named category for years on my site (curiously using the dotted i). I’ll use the Turkish. Dosseman (talk) 08:33, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
A couple of things more: Dosseman I appreciate with all my frankness your efforts to show the cultural heritage of Turkey to the world, many thanks. However you have a difficulty in either learning our categorization principles or in obeying them. For example the "capitalization" issue is also present in the subcats and in several other cats that you initiated (of which in the past I corrected some). Please when the cat name is about a monument, museum, school etc simply use all capitals and do not use a capital for "pottery" as you did in one of the subcats. Using Turkish letters is easier than you imagine. Simply look above in this disscussion, while editing. There is a chamber for "Special characters". Choose "Latin" and you wil find ı, İ, ö, ü, ğ etc. I am making the move I announced above. Thanks. E4024 (talk) 15:37, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I am moving it to "Category:Bursa Türk İslam Eserleri Müzesi" because that is the formal name; i.e. not "Turkish and Islamic" but "Turkish Islamic". E4024 (talk) 15:42, 22 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This category and its subcategories that have phrase "First Estonian Republic" in title should be renamed/merged. This is because given phrase is discouraged in Estonian historiography as the republic of that time is generally considered the same as current one (relates to the state continuity of the Baltic states). Given phrase is seldom used, but it denotes an entity that is generally considered not to exist.

This category title is supposed to refer to historical period which already has Category:History of Estonia (1918–1940) dedicated to it. So, following this more adequate example, categories could be reanmed like this: "Category:Military officers of the First Estonian Republic" → "Military officers of Estonia (1918–1940)".

Those a few categories with inadequate titles were created recently and for a little while they were already fixed, too. Unfortunately the initial fix was reverted for an unknown reason, despite disagreement by multiple users (including an admin) in COM:AN. Eventually these titles need to be corrected. So for now I'm documenting this issue here in form of a CfD entry. 2001:7D0:81F7:B580:FE:F1D1:892D:A9C3 09:31, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I added "uncategorized categories" to this red cat both to attract attention of those who would like to categorize it and also to ask a few things about "trolleys". Frankly when I think of trolleys I yearn for the trolley buses some of us were able to use in city transport in Turkey. I was looking around and saw a few things. I wanted to use "Category:Trolleybus lines" for the overhead electricity lines but I saw that it was an RD to Category:Trolleybus routes. I am sure many people take "line" as "wire". Maybe that RD should go to "Category:Trolleybus overhead lines", as you see in the end it was about "lines". If I may abuse your time a bit more another question: I had added Category:Candy trolley to the File:Badem sekeri.jpg. The cat is still red (like this one which has been red for a long time) because with my poor English I hesitated to create that cat. Is that a "candy trolley"? How can we categorize that... sort of vehicle? I am sorry if I could not keep the issue within the limits of "Category:Trolleys. Thanks for your patience and help. Hello, My request concerns the "Category:Lady Buddha(Da Nang)". It seems that it should be deleted because Quan The Am, or Quan Am, Guanyin, Kannon, Avalokisteshvara, is a female Bodhisattva, not a Bouddha. Replacing with "Lady Bodhisattva" would not be better from a Buddhist point of view. The 9 files attached to this category would have to be transferred to the 2 categories "Category:Ling Ung Pagoda" and "Statues of Quan Am in Viet Nam". I could make these transfers, but I prefer to ask your help because it is also a question of deleting an existing category (any deletion must be justified, and besides, you can do everything in one operation, unlike me). I hope for your agreement. Many thanks in advance for your help.--Contributeur2019 (talk) 09:48, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We really do not need this cat and its subcats. Look at Turkey, a country with half a million soldiers is represented with two or three rankless youngsters. Of course one may claim that US soldiers in Cuba are not soldiers of Cuba but in the end they live within their sovereign base and I do not see the Cubans ring their bell to ask taxes or anything. I mean having separate cats for soldiers "of" and soldiers "in" is not really necessary. Look at the so few subcats and really they do not add anything. Let us concentrate on what we have got in soldiers (military people) of all countries and close this unnecessary parallel. E4024 (talk) 00:50, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The category has no evident encyclopedic purpose. It is a self promoting category. 95.249.122.242 15:16, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Blow it up. --E4024 (talk) 15:57, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am Ulf Larsen, the person that the category cover. It was created by FredWalsh. If this category should be kept or not, is perhaps connected to whether the content should be kept. Regarding that, I would like to repeat my previous statement in a discussion whether one of the pictures should be deleted.
I am not going to argue for keep or delete, as I leave it up to the community here on Wikimedia Commons to decide if they shall be kept or not. Regarding consent, the various models I have paid to be with me in amateur porn has all agreed to have the pics and videos uploaded by me on the Internet. Regarding my former girlfriend, I have just a few days ago specifically asked her if she agreed to have the category "Prostitutes and customers", and she was fine with that. Regarding amateur porn in general, I do of course respect it if a decision is made to remove such media from Wikimedia Commons, but I believe then that one would have to discuss professional pornography. And if both of them are unfit for presentation here, what about other media that may be disturbing for some viewer (nude people, dead people, pictures of war). I have been contributing to Wikipedia since 2004, and I will continue to contribute, regardless if some or all of my amateur pornographic pictures are removed. As an exhibitionist, amateur porn model I do however believe that this also is a part of what should be of interest for a project that: "is a media file repository making available public domain and freely-licensed educational media content (images, sound and video clips) to everyone, in their own language." - a direct quote from Commons:Welcome.
Regarding the statement from user 95.249.122.242 that "It is a self promoting category." I agree, as it does indeed promote me as exhibitionist and amateur porn model. But again, I did not create it myself. We have a couple of categories here of other individuals that also may be labeled as self promoting (various politicians, actors etc.), so that alone as an argument should not be sufficient for deleting this category. Ulflarsen (talk) 11:26, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep So long as these images (or some of them) remain on Commons, a category that unites them, based on the subject depicted, is both in-scope and appropriate. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:16, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. The category accurately reflects a significant characteristic of the images contained therein. BD2412 T 15:12, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Keep, It's something similar to the large amounts of "Uploads by User:XXX" categories but in this case contain the subject. In fact categories specific to Wikimedians are extremely common, just look any person photographed at a Wikimania or any Wikimedia chapter organisation. The images in this category were uploaded with an educational value in mind by a veteran Wikipedian, it's clearly not meant to be promotional and even if it was, it's clearly a useful metric for the organisation of these images. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:48, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Keep I created this category because it appeared logical to group these files. I believe this nomination is an attempt to circumvent the repeated and unsuccessful attempts by anonymous editors to get the files deleted. What is being shown in these files is human sexuality, which is a legitimate educational topic. Just because it involves nudity, it seems to get these puritans who think it should not be on Commons. FredWalsh (talk) 21:32, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Keep. Commons:Not censored! How could we get files to depicting the topics if creators don't release them as a free license compatible with Wikimedia Commons? Crazy hat royal (talk) 14:39, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Never worry for lack of contributors in this area; some even pay models only with the aim of improving our Commons. Take care. E4024 (talk) 15:14, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • Regarding the lack of contributors and that models are paid. Judging by the category Category:Amateur pornography it does seem to be a lack of contributors & content. Before I uploaded some of my pics there were hardly any there. Regarding pay, I did pay the various girls that I have made amateur porn together with. I can however not see that this fact should disqualify the pictures from being uploaded here, as long as the picture in itself is of interest for Wikimedia Commons. Ulflarsen (talk) 15:16, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • My ex-girlfriend have now sent an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org stating that she support the uploading and keeping of these and other files of her and me in amateur porn. It seems to me that as for the deletion regarding that she is not aware of, or support the upload, now has been settled, and can not be used as a reason for deletion. This applies to all the pictures listed which mentions "ex-girlfriend" in the filename. Ulflarsen (talk) 14:48, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Delete, and of course also the images contained. No encyclopedic purpose, self-promotional ("exhibitionist") content. --Reinhard Kraasch (talk) 13:38, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Keep Commons:Not censored. There are categories to other photos by author. Also all deletion requests opened on this images have been kept until now. Tm (talk) 12:41, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • It is now some three months since this category was marked for deletion. As a volunteer to Wikipedia I do of course understand that various issues takes time, but it would be good if this matter could be solved, one way or the other. Ulflarsen (talk) 09:22, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What is the difference between Category:Couchette cars and Category:Sleeping cars (rail transport)? JopkeB (talk) 16:28, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is a big difference:
  • Sleeping cars are for normal sleeping, and each it compartment consist usually of 1-2 place for sleeping (and you usually have a normal pillow, sheets and a duvet)
  • Couchette cars are mainly for lying down, and each it compartment consist usually of 6 place for lying, although, of course, no one forbids sleeping either (and you usually have a headrest, a blanket, bedding and a sheet - usually disposable made of non-woven fabric)
Electron   16:48, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Is that so? I've heard that, but also understood that the main difference (de facto, whatever the historic use) is that the couchette sleeps more people, in Central Europe normally six instead of the one to three in sleeper cabins. Last time I used a couchette, long ago, I thought we'd bought tickets according to the "mainly lying down" definition, but I could not distinguish the "place for lying down" from a bed. I wonder what the beds in a sleeper car are like. –LPfi (talk) 09:07, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The sleeping compartment also usually has a small table (and a small sink underneath it), a small recess for the wardrobe, etc. (they are not in the couchette). There is no pillows but headrest only in a couchette. Next difference is that sleeping cars haven't got windows between a compartment and a car corridor. Couchette cars have usually wide windows between a compartment and a car corridor as it is in others sitting compartments. Usually, during a day a couchette car compartment can be converted easyly by passangers to a sitting compartment for 6 people (as a normal 2-nd class car compartment). It usually not possible in a typical slipping compartment. And of course couchettes are much cheaper than sleeping cars... Electron   11:58, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • In Turkey we also have these two different classes in sleeping trains: "Kuşetli" (couchette) and "Yataklı" vagon. The former is not only sort of uncomfortable but also you have to share a small compartment with three other people. The latter one ("yataklı" means "with a bed" in Turkish) is all for you. You can sit, stand and "walk" (a bit :) freely. In the "kuşetli" you have the task of getting to sleep everybody at the same time and pray that none snores. As a student I had to try that "kuşetli" ordeal once. ("Yataklı" was only in my dreams. :) Afterwards only "seat travel"... E4024 (talk) 02:31, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dear @Electron, LPfi, and E4024: Thank you all for your information and comment. I'll add definitions to both categories to make clear the differences, and close this discussion. JopkeB (talk) 09:19, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Conclusion:

  • Sleeping cars are for normal sleeping, and each compartment consists usually of 1-2 place for sleeping. A sleeping car usually has a small table (and a small sink underneath it), a small recess for the wardrobe.
  • Couchette cars are mainly for lying down, each compartment consists usually of 4-6 places for lying or sleeping. During daytime a couchette car compartment can be converted easily by passengers to a sitting compartment for 6 people. Couchettes are much cheaper than sleeping cars.

So couchette cars are for more people than sleeping cars; sleeping cars offer more comfort.
I'll add definitions to both categories to make clear the differences. JopkeB (talk) 09:26, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

About this and the mother cat "Category:Music pedagogues: I think the use of "educator" in English and "pedagog" in some other countries creates a confusion (easy to solve, with some help from EN:WP) in maintaining parallel cats here in Commons and various WPs. For example: In Catalan Wikipedia we have "Categoria:Pedagogs musicals" which makes interwiki with the EN:WP's "Category:Music educators". The use of both "pedagogue" and "educator" in Commons to make a distinction between the two concepts (which is quite arbitrary) creates the wider problem. We need only "educators" here, as the basis for Commons is English. In English WP the only place where that concept is used is "Category:Music pedagogues by instrument" in which the word can be easily changed to educators. (BTW here we have a Category:Music pedagogues by instrument linked to that EN:WP cat but which funnily only has vocalists. I mean no string, wind, brass whatsoever instruments. :) Without entering into sophisticated terminology discussions, some problems in Commons -"probably" like this one, only "probably"- that people from non-English countries (especially Latin languages) tend to create cats for the terms they use in their own languages without searching enough for the English equivalent. I also became a part of this confusion and created, an hour ago, "Category:Music pedagogues from Turkey" which I will move to "educators". E4024 (talk) 23:27, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Propose deleting, because no criterion is indicated for determining whether a bust is one of the largest in the world. I moved several subcats out of this because they were for statues that were not busts. I moved them to Category:Colossal statues. I don't see a similar category for busts, so the remaining subcat could go to Category:Monumental objects. Auntof6 (talk) 04:05, 14 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It had only one subcat (Category:Benzyl acetate). I see no reason for keeping this category, there is only one compound that can be correctly named as benzyl acetate. Wostr (talk) 18:06, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Question Would Category:Anisyl acetate be another subcategory of the nominated cat? And α-methylbenzyl acetate seems like a notable compound that hasn't yet gotten a wikipedia/commons-files entry. On the other hand, is enough of an actual theme to merit the cat? DMacks (talk) 21:57, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • I see no reason how anisyl acetate could be named 'benzyl acetate', maybe only as a colloquial name, not scientific, systematic name, not even semi-systematic. Wostr (talk) 23:15, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
        • "Anisyl" is "p-methoxybenzyl" (and often abbreviated "PMB")...common term in some areas of study (google for "PMB ester"). It's an acetate at the benzylic position, therefore it is a benzyl acetate. It's not "benzyl acetate" (chemical itself) but it is "a benzyl acetate" (member of the "benzyl acetates" class). I just threw together en:anisyl acetate, and the first two database entries I found for its flavor properties use "4-methoxybenzyl acetate" as its main name. Note that I (still) don't see this as enough of a relevant unifying characteristic to merit a category for them. DMacks (talk) 03:54, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
          • Can de deleted, as Wostr: there is only one compound that can be correctly named as benzyl acetate Regards JWBE (talk) 09:24, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
            • Class vs parent-structure? In reply to User:JWBE and User:Wostr, consider:
              1. "Benzyl acetates as attractants for the male oriental fruit fly, Dacus dorsalis, and the male melon fly, Dacus cucurbitae" (PNAS 1986, doi:10.1073/pnas.83.6.1549)
              2. "Palladium Catalyzed Arylation and Benzylation of Nitroarenes Using Aryl Sulfonates and Benzyl Acetates" (Journal of Organic Chemistry 2017, doi:10.1021/acs.joc.7b00550)
              3. "Benzyl Acetates by Acetoxylation of Methylbenzenes using Peroxydisulfate as Oxidizing Agent" (Synthesis 1980, doi:10.1055/s-1980-29061)
These are refs using this specific term to mean the class, demonstrating that this class is an encyclopediacally-defined topic of interest according to reliable sources and that is actually called by this name. It seems pretty standard that we have plural-name cats for a class of compounds (substituted derivatives of a parent). Category:Benzoate esters for example is not only "C6H5CO2R". Category:Fluoromethanes is the container for all CFxH4–x not just Category:Fluoromethane‎ itself. Overthrowing the class/parent or plural naming pattern probably requires a wider discussion than just this one specific DR. DMacks (talk) 10:23, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Putting everything in Category:Benzoate esters is a huge mistake, one that probably came from en.wiki messy, more thematic than hierarchical categorisation system (more like tags rather than categories). I don't think that en.wiki categorisation system should be reproduced anywhere, it has always been presented in my home wiki as a model that should not be followed. Just like in de.wiki and WD, there should be precise definitions of what specific category is about to be useful for users. Not everything that can be named like this in a few sources. Seems redundant with Category:Toilet signs. Can we make one of these a redirect to the other? Brainy J (talk) 15:25, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Brainy J: Generally, in many countries, the word "toilet" or its local equivalents is used and understood as a name for the room designated primarily for excretion (urination and defecation), while the word "bathroom" for the room designated primarily for washing (equipped with a sink, bathtub or shower). It is true that sometimes the two functions are merged into one room, and that in some dialects or regions the names may be interchangeable or merging with each other. But I think these are two clearly different concepts and functions which should be distinguished also in categorization. I'm not an expert in English dialectology, but i think, articles en:Toilet (room) and en:Bathroom are comprehensible enough to clarify and demonstrate this difference. However, maybe, some images are categorized incorrectly and their categorization may need to be corrected. --ŠJů (talk) 15:55, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the toilet signs, so that now there is only the child category Category:Shower signs. 35mm film used to be extremely popular and common. I have never heard of 135mm film. If this was not a typo, and 135 mm film really existed, there is no way all these subcategories for 35mm film belong here. Geo Swan (talk) 17:27, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Okay, google tells me 135 film cartridges held 35 mm film, and were used in entry level cameras like the Kodak instamatic. So Category:135 film cameras should be a subcategory of Category:35 mm film cameras and should only include cameras that used this cartridge system.
  • My family owned an instamatic, 50 years ago. It used a fixed focus lense. Loading film into a regular 35 mm film camera required opening it up, and wrapping the film around the take-up spool, closing the camera, and then advancing several frames that were exposed when you loaded the film, so unexposed film faced the shutter. When you reached the end of the film, you would then have to manually rewind all the film back onto the original light proof spool, before you took the spool out, to send away for developing - unless you had your own darkroom.

The instamatic was loaded by placing a new cartridge in it. The cartridge contained an internal take-up spool, and would automatically advance to unexposed film. When all the film was exposed the cartridge was removed for mailing to Kodak, and a new cartridge was inserted. Geo Swan (talk) 17:43, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The existence of this category and the parent that only has this category in it, Category:Haplogroup I of Y-DNA by country, only have the possible use of promoting scientific racism. Racist lobbyists have manipulated this Wikimedia project and others to promote eugenicist views, such as the genetic superiority of "Mongoloid" genes producing more intelligent humans; if in doubt that this has been happening, refer to m:Talk:Black_Lives_Matter#Scientific_racism.
There is no scientific basis to justify chopping up human genetic traits by politically defined national territories. Humans are allowed to travel between countries, and no country has a rule that forces in-breeding on its populations.
Genetic differences exist and can be analysed based on historical groupings, but these have absolute nothing to do with the categorization of living people by territory.

Firstly, the arondissements are ill-named. There should be a separator ("de" in French, "of" in English) between "Arrondissement" and the name of the prefecture/sous-prefecture. Secondly, the arrondissements are pure administrative subdivisions. They don't really have a proper existence in ordinary life. Outside the mother-category for each arrondissement, I don't think it's pertinent to subdivide regional categories in arrondissements when there are already subdivisions likes department (which have a much stronger identity) or even communes (cities). Rhadamante (talk) 05:46, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have created some of these categories, following a pattern already used in Grand Est and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Who care's about "ordinary life"? I can't see the link between an administrative subdivision and daily life. Administrative subdivisions exist, period. Using communes or departments instead? Seriously? Buildings by communes exist already. Buildings by department too. Don't you think that something is needed between them? Categories with more than 900 units like some departments seem a good idea to you? These giant categories are absolutely unpractical, splitting them in subcategories is obviously needed. This provides a first sorting making subcategories more manageable. The exemples in Grand Est can prove it. --Birdie (talk) 17:41, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Concerning the names, indeed the French arrondissements are written in German and they are all following the pattern "Arrondissement Chef-lieu" in Commons. As a german contributor created lots of them, I think it's quite obvious why they're written this way. --Birdie (talk) 18:00, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Seriously, these subdivisions don't exist in reality. Everybody know in which commune/department/region they live, each of these division has as a direct link to certain aspects of life (for instance in education, communes fund/manage pre-school/elementary schools, départements do the same with collèges and the régions with lycées). Arrondissements don't. They are purely administrative artificial divisions. It is as inept as subcategorizing buildings in the United States by congressional districts. It's maybe "convenient" to use them as subcategories, but at some point, it's useless to have subcategories that have no connection to reality. Rhadamante (talk) 01:30, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So... I don't see your point. Something shouldn't exist cos it's just for administrative purpose? In which "reality" do you live? The fact you don't use it (I guess you don't have a vehicle or a licence), doesn't mean it doesn't exist. In fact, if you were living in France, your ID card, your passport or your visa would be issued in the sous-préfecture of your dwelling. But it still doesn't exist in "your reality" as you obviously don't care about such details. --Birdie (talk) 11:13, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This should normally be called Category:Files from rodrigoparedes Flickr stream, but there is also Category:Files by Rodrigo Paredes, which has the same scope, as far as I can see. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 11:27, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure OVERCAT applies here. @Jmabel: On the village pump, you said "You should be able to navigate down the category tree in a reasonable way & find something appropriately categorized without ever taking the branch for a 'source' category". Does a creation of a subcategory by uploader to a category by source including the removal of the content of the subcategory from the upper one go against that rule? 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 20:39, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Since this is entirely about hidden categories, I don't really care a lot. I doubt anyone will be looking for images by this particular person, and if they were they'd presumably search on his name rather than using categories. Very different from (for example) narrowing from a museum as institution to that museum as source. - Jmabel ! talk 00:47, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

stale discussion. We are not so strict with hidden/usesr categories. I guess we can close this CFD as keep--Estopedist1 (talk) 18:42, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I would still prefer that the categories be merged in some way. @Jeff G. Do you really need an intersection cat with Category:Files transferred by User:Jeff G. from Flickr, since they appear to be in Category:Photos transferred by User:Jeff G. from Flickr anyway? 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 19:52, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@ŠJů: problematic requested move:
{{move|Interiors of metro trains|to distinguish from interiors of metro stations etc. |3=2020-05-18}}

To be moved to category:Interiors of metro trains, but eg category:Interiors of metro stations is missing. One parent category is Category:Train interiors Estopedist1 (talk) 08:44, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

One problem with metro stations is that there quite often an overlap with railway stations wich often have both metro and railway trains. Often they are very distinc separate parts of the station, but in some stations you have metro trains on the same platforms. Where there is a separate category (Category:Brussels Midi station (metro)) no problem but you also have Category:Amstelstation wih both trains and metro's stopping at the same platforms for crossplatform acces.Smiley.toerist (talk) 09:18, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Estopedist1 and Smiley.toerist: The vast majority (almost all) of the photographs contained concerned interior of trains. I created a subcategory for metro train interiors and renamed all existing subcategories by country to make their names clearer.

The categories of metro station interiors do not yet have their own categorization structure probably, I have found only a few individual cases. However, I would consider such a category to be promising - in the future it will certainly be appropriate to divide photographs of stations into exterior and interior, and this in even more detail - the station tunnels (platforms), vestibules, inside and outside escalators and stairs, etc.

Boundary and two-system trains and stations can be treated individually, for example by parallel categorization. But in my country, for example, metro stations have a different operator than railway stations, and the borderline between them is clear, even if the two stations are connected to each other in one transfer node.

We still have the long-standing problem of whether and how the "metro" systems can be distinguished from other rapid transit systems, but this is another question and must be addressed at another time and discussion. For example, some suburban railways are integral part of general railway traffic, others are similar to separate metro systems.--ŠJů (talk) 16:31, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No consensus on what to do with this category, default to keep. Since the required categories Interiors of metro trains and Interiors of metro stations have been created, there's no need to open this discussion. --Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribs) 07:45, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This cat must either be deleted immediately or made (from scratch) to fit our categorization system. Now it is only under Category:Buses by operator which is a classification based on bus operating "companies". There may even be a company called "City" somewhere and that will add to the problem here. At this moment within the cat there are images of random buses from the city of Astana to the city of Adana which have in common only beginning with an A and ending with an a.
