not useful (brewery or monastery?) Mattes (talk) 10:32, 11 September 2016 (UTC)
- Well, that needed a closer look, I suggest the following changes:
- Category:Paulaner deals with the monastery, should be moved to Category:Paulaner monastery.
- Category:Paulaner should be kept as a disambiguation page
- Category:Paulaner-Brauerei deals with the brewery and should be moved to Category:Paulaner Brauerei (leaving a redirect) as that is its official (proper) name.
- Category:Paulaner, Munich might either be deleted or redirected to (then disambiguating) Category:Paulaner.

This category does not actually contain anything that should be in a category about the tram line (the way the other categories in Category:Tram lines in Vienna are used).
It contains, as of now:
- one photo of a steam-powered tram with no line number, before the designation "360" had been invented for this route
- two photos (File:Mödling Bezirksmuseum 5920.JPG, File:Tramo kun pneŭoj.jpg) of fake/model trams that are decorated with the line number 360. Neither of them tell us anything interesting about the tram line
- the rest (including everything in the subcategory) are photos/diagrams of the tram track; all photos are actually from after its closure, showing merely where the tram track used to be)
But none of the other line categories in Vienna contain photos showing only the track – for good reason, because otherwise, if there are five tram lines on one track, we would need to categorize even photos showing only one tram of one line into all of their categories, which wouldn't be very useful to someone seeking to find photos about the tram line.
There is a category structure Category:Tram tracks in Vienna and so, in line with that, I propose that this be moved to Category:Tram track Rodaun–Mödling, which seems to have been the intention of most people who categorized in here. darkweasel94 17:39, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
- Comment: I have no problem to move the Category to Category:Tram track Rodaun–Mödling. Mö1997 (Questions ?!?!) 17:43, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
- Comment: I can only documentation, which the track like and not if this line was in Use. Because the line was adjusted on November 30 th 1967. - Nachdem da sowieso nur d-sprechende mitdiskutieren ;-): Für eine Umbenennung sehe ich kein Problem. This category is very similar to "Category:Beauty pageant titleholders". Magnolia677 (talk) 10:56, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- They are similar. There are some cases where a titleholder didn't actually win a competition, but took over a title after the winner quit or was removed. An example is en:Suzette Charles, who took over as Miss America after Vanessa Williams resigned. English Wikipedia has both of them in the Miss America winners category, but Charles didn't initially win.
- It's also possible that there are or have been beauty pageants whose winners don't/didn't get an actual title; they would fit under winners, but not under titleholders. --Auntof6 (talk) 16:28, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks to Auntof6. I think a {{Cat see also}} should fit here. --Achim (talk) 17:43, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Contains almost all breeds of ponies and is obsolete after Commons:Categories for discussion/2016/04/Category:Ponies named horse. I suggest renaming to Ponies by breed and adding the handful of remaining breeds. rimshottalk 19:58, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
- Ping @Montanabw. --rimshottalk 20:01, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
- I'd just delete it and upmerge contents to Category:Ponies. The distinction between horses and ponies is sometimes contentious (Icelandics and Minis are two examples where people fight quite strongly over the "horse or pony" question). To the extent we have "Horse by breed" we could maybe rename that one to "Horses and ponies by breed" and then everything will be able to fit in with less drama. Montanabw (talk) 20:14, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
- I haven't a clue about horses nor ponies, so I moved the content one level up to Ponies. If someone likes to categorize the whole bunch by breed he might do so. --Achim (talk) 16:36, 25 October 2016 (UTC)

Reasons for discussion request -Obsolete. This category was created to process a mass upload from RCE. It suggested labeling 15 files as "Sheddak", dutch for category:Sawtooth roofs. I moved all the files to that category.- — bertux 20:29, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
- Addition: All these RCE suggestions were lifted from the filenames and descriptions. Some were to the point, as the 49,963 (!) files in Category:Images from the Tropenmuseum proof. Other labels invite reactions like Thanks for the effort, like Vlag (Flag) and Kazerne (Barracks). What flag, what barracks?
- Even after removal of such categories, searches for suggested labels, e.g. Sluiskolk or Sluiskolk rce will still return these uploads — bertux 06:24, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
- Bertus, thanks for notifying. What about Category:RCE suggested: Tropenmuseum Amsterdam? --Achim (talk) 20:52, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
- Same stuff. As far as I know, all these RCE suggestions were meant to be temporary and no one in their right mind would add new files to these categories. If we want to be absolutely sure, we could contact people who assisted the upload process, but I can't see how removal of these categories could do harm. I found some more: Category:RCE suggested: Waddenzee, Category:RCE suggested: Sluiskolk, Category:RCE suggested: Sieranker. - I'm not sure about this one. "Scouting" can be used in lower case to have a general meaning. It's only when referring to certain scouting organizations that it requires an upper case "S". I can't tell if all the logos here are for those organizations, but the category name certainly doesn't specify that. (In fact, that's an issue with other scouting-related categories here.) Grabs or Grab? > Grab (tool) Schofför (talk) 00:55, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- Hello Schofför, at Commons the categories listing objects are plural, see COM:CAT. --Ariadacapo (talk) 05:47, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- Grabs. If English Wikipedia had a category for them, that name would be plural, too. Article names are singular, category names are plural. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:50, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- My request is directed to the category of political Commune Grabs (Category:Grabs (St. Gallen, Switzerland)). There is an article in 17 languages on the municipality Grabs. None of these versions require a lemma with staple. The English Wikipedia also does not need a brace. Therefore on Commons no Lemma should be used with clip for the Commune Grabs. --Schofför (talk) 09:10, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- Names of articles on Wikipedia do not dictate the category structure over here — see en:Boat vs. Category:Boats for example. The cross-wiki links are maintained (thanks to Wikidata). Category:Grabs is a disambig because we want a long-term, maintenance-less solution to help people categorize images correctly (better being overly explicit than having to rely on volunteers to sort the mess afterwards). Ariadacapo (talk) 17:49, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
- It makes sense that the category of Commons is the same as those in the language Wikis. Reference is made in each case under Wikilinks it. There is no real difference between Bodie and Bodie State Historical Park; in fact, the latter is a redirect to the former on Wikipedia. Therefore there is no reason for this category to exist, so it should be merged into Category:Bodie, California to stop confusing people as to which category to use. Appears redundant, as the image is included in the more appropriate Category:Bishops of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany, which is itself a sub-category of Category:Episcopal Church in the United States. Drbones1950 (talk) 20:54, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
- How is that redundant? This category is for an individual person. The Bishops category is for a position, and contains other categories for individuals. If your reason were that a category isn't needed for a single file, I'd support that, but I don't see a redundancy. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:58, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
You're right, now that I review my suggestion it seems that I thought I found this image under the parent category (Category:Episcopal Church in the United States) as well as Category:Bishops of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany. I don't now see that particular redundancy. And, I'm sure that I can find other pictures of Bishop Love, as I am a member of the diocese, so I'm not suggesting that the category be eliminated, either. By the way, I am looking at the Episcopal Church categories right now, would it be appropriate to address any other categorization questions to your talk page, Auntof6? Thanks, Drbones1950 (talk) 16:11, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

Problem of self-parent category, template use mistake, and other confusion solved.
Category does not need discussion any more.
Contains only one image, apparently a sports team of some kind, but I doubt it was called "Club Florida". Even the Spanish "Equipo Florida" doesn't necessarily mean that was the name of the group. I think the image should be in more generic categories unless we can identify it better. Auntof6 (talk) 07:09, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

No obvious difference to Category:Thioacids (both have some comparable diagrams of the functional groups). Propose merge, and then subcats for Category:Thiocarbonates vs thiocarboxylic variants. DMacks (talk) 19:37, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
- Sounds reasonable. For the record, the original rationale for having separate categories was:
- a thioacid is a sulfur analogue of an oxoacid
- a thioic acid is a sulfur analogue of a carboxylic acid (what you call a thiocarboxylic acid)
- By 'analogue', I mean replacement of one or more of the oxygen atoms by sulfur atoms.
- If you consider carboxylic acids to be oxoacids, then "thioic acids" (or "thiocarboxylic acids") would be a subcategory of "thioacids".
- Happy to help with the changes. --Ben (talk) 11:26, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

In spite of the scientific-sounding name, most of the subcats here appear to be someone's personal porn collection. Can we either:
- Move all the files to more generic categories
- Rename to reflect what's actually here (for example, many of the subcats could be called something like "genitals of anonymous human male subject xx")
- Delete this cat and most of what's under it
Many of these offer nothing that we don't already have plenty of, and since the people are anonymous, there's little value in seeing which parts go with which other parts. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:20, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Should this be called "Writers by Indian language"? A person doesn't have to be from India to write in these languages. Of course, we'd have to take out the English one if we rename this way. Auntof6 (talk) 15:47, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- Keep without renaming, for the reasons that:
- many, many "Writers from India" also write and publish their works in English – Mishtra, Nair, Roy, Rushdie – among others;
- for the other hand, English is also one of the around 30 official languages in India;
- that's why it was named "...from India by language" ;-) Roland zh (talk) 17:46, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- But a person doesn't have to be from India to write in these languages. The subcategories aren't called "People of India who write in <language>". They're called "<language> writers", which could be people from anywhere. It doesn't matter that these are all official languages in India. It matters that this cat implies that everyone in it is from India, but most if the subcats don't require that. If they did require it, they'd be named "<language>-language writers from India", like the English one. I guess I didn't make the point about the subcats before. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:47, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
- Delete There's only one sub-category for writers from India by language (Category:English-language writers from India) the rest are just categorizing writers by language, not language and state, and don't belong here. If you want to group them all in Category:Writers in Indian languages, fine. - Themightyquill (talk) 22:56, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Stale discussion. Some new subcategories are created (eg "Bengali-language writers from India"). By the way, if you see respective en:Category:Indian writers by language and its subcategories, you see that there are also categories like "Punjabi-language writers" or "Odia-language writers"--Estopedist1 (talk) 22:50, 20 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Estopedist1: Good point. So then we keep both this category as is, but either remove "X-language writers" sub-categories or move them to Category:Writers in Indian languages? -- Themightyquill (talk) 13:30, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
- Closed as Kept. There are now multiple subcategories, used. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 20:25, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
Merge category with Category:Photographs by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Northeast Region Elisfkc (talk) 19:30, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
- I have no strong views. Based on most Flickrstream uploads using the 'Photographs by photographer' format, there is a case for harmonization by merging this way around. --Fæ (talk) 08:37, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
- Hello, as we have accumulated many thousands more USFWS images by now, Category:United States Fish and Wildlife Service is being split into the 8 USFWS regions (which can be found at USFWS.) For example, Category:United States Fish and Wildlife Service Pacific Southwest Region. Some of these regions have their own Flickr streams. So I think it is reasonable to have both the region and Flickr stream as subcategories, for example, Category:Files from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service Pacific Southwest Region Flickr stream can be a category of Category:United States Fish and Wildlife Service Pacific Southwest Region, which can be one of 8 region categories in Category:United States Fish and Wildlife Service. This really works for me as I try to categorize tens of thousands of these images. Thank you Ruff tuff cream puff (talk) 06:43, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
- seems to be Keep (ie not merging). @Fæ: Objections?--Estopedist1 (talk) 08:24, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

Seems to be a dupe of or redundant to Category:Visitor attractions in Armenia. Achim (talk) 20:10, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
- It does seem to be, but the two "top sights" gallery pages make me wonder if some traval publication or organization made a list of what they thought were the top sights. If so, and if that's considered worth identifying here (not likely, in my opinion), we could keep this, but there should be a description of who picked the sights. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:26, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
- Auntof6, agree, but for more than one year the creator's behavior again and again leads to cat issues, see User talk:Soghomon Matevosyan. --Achim (talk) 20:32, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

No justification offered for keeping in several years. -- Themightyquill (talk) 22:25, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
Delete this, all daughter categories, and Category:BP House as bad names and overcategorization.
- There is no such entity as the "Malaysian Scouting Association." On the English Wikipedia, we use w:Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia or Scout Association of Malaysia.
- The district and subentity categories are completely unnecessary, and not done in similar Scouting by country categories with so few files.
- Category:BP House is a bad name, there are B-P Houses throughout the world, and again completely unnecessary in a Scouting by country category with so few files.
--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 02:36, 29 September 2016 (UTC) I am not against an enhancement of the categories and perhaps this was your intention, but how you did, it was pure vandalism.
- It is bad behaviour to remove a specific category and substitute it with a general category. Especially as this was killing the location categories.
- You removed regional category (Scouting in Sabah) which is not justified by any means. Regional subcategories are necessary to get them closer attached to the region (see e.g. Category:Scouting in the United States by state)
- The name for the scout house in KK is "Rumah BP", which, as category names should be in English, translates to "BP House".
- The Malaysian name of the single districts in Sabah is for example "Persekutuan Pencakap Malaysia Cawangan Sabah Daerah Kudat", see e.g. File:Kudat_Sabah_Malaysian-Scouting-Association-District-Kudat-01.jpg, which translates to "Malaysian Scouting Association, District Kudat"
- WikiCommons aims to have a categorisation as specific as possible. This is facilitating the search for the correct files. Also, if there are administrative entities available, there should be also a category for the entitiy, even when there is only a single file. Your explanation "completely unnecessary in a Scouting by country category with so few files." is not meeting the good practice in Commons.
- Conclusion: If you think there is a misspelling in the English translation of the Malaysian names, then replace the categories with a correct spelled category and keep the category structure. Refrain from vandalising photos and categories from just taking away mother categories and adding superficial categories.

- Sigh. You're not listening. Category:BP House is a bad name, there are B-P Houses throughout the world. If you are so gung-ho on the categories, the names should be in Malaysian as they are incorrect in English. Speaking of bad practice, you should be very careful who you accuse of vandalism. Shame on you.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 04:55, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
- As I said, enhance the category by better spelling: Using "B-P House, Kuala Lumpur" would be as fine as "Rumah BP, Kuala Lumpur". But it is no-go to just replace it with the superficial category "Scouting in Malaysia" and destroying by that the location category. However, as there is a rule for categorization, that English should be the preferred language, I refrained from using Rumah BP when creating the category (and yes, it is Rumah BP without "-"). So now, I am waiting for your proposals of better spellings or better translations. --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 05:20, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
- Please have a look to photo File:Kuala_Lumpur_Malaysia_The-Scouts-Association-of-Malaysia-BP-House-02.jpg where you can see the inscription Rumah BP. Formerly, there was an inspcription BP House on the same place. While it might be your own wish, that there should be a minus between the B and the P, it is obviously different in Malaysia. --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 07:26, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
- Further evidences for "BP House": [7], [8] and section "OB The Scouts Association of Malaysia; Vision and Mission" at the official website of pengakapmalaysia.org (pse use cache [9] as website is offline at the moment) --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 07:30, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Might I additionally draw your attention to the fact, that the Sabah Branch of the Scouts Association of Malaysia is naming the Rumah BP in KK as "B.P. House" with two dots, see [10]. Might I also draw your further attention to the official website [11] where you can see the administrative divisions of he branch. I hope you see, that your removal of the category Category:Scouting in Sabah was not founded. I am now still waiting to your proposals, how we can make the categories better instead of deleting them. --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 07:04, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Alright, as you fail to resolve the request, here are my proposals:
- Renaming Category:BP House to Category:BP House, Kuala Lumpur to respect the historical name but also considering, that there are Houses of similar name worldwide.
- Renaming Category:Malaysian Scouting Association to Category:Scouts Association of Malaysia as referred to in the Scouts Association of Malaysia (Incorporation) Act 1968 [Act 409] (please notice that Scouts is plural)
- Renaming Category:Malaysian Scouting Association, Sabah Branch to Category:Scouts Association of Malaysia Sabah Branch
- Renaming Category:Malaysian Scouting Association, District Kudat to Category:Scouts Association of Malaysia Sabah Branch, District Kudat according to official districts, see also File:Kudat Sabah Malaysian-Scouting-Association-District-Kudat-01.jpg (other districts respectively)
- Keep Category:Scouting in Sabah as as subcategory; see also [12]
- On renaming the categories, keep the appropriate localisation overcategories

- I didn't "fail" anything, my purpose here is to delete your bad categories, not to save them in any form. And you still owe me an apology over the accusation of vandalism.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 04:18, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
