Images were removed following Deletion Nomination, no further need for the category. Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:50, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Then discussion shouldn't be necessary and you could tag the category with {{Empty page}} instead of bringing it here. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:55, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This category is currently in Category:People by name. Is that right? I can't figure out the purpose of his category, even after reading en:Leagros Group. Thanks. Themightyquill (talk) 19:48, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"A Painter" ("Peintre A" in French) appears to be a specific painter in the group, one whose name is not known. Since it's not a real name, I don't think it should be in the people by name category. I think it should go in Category:Anonymous painters or Category:Unidentified painters. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:11, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It is indeed a conventional name for an otherwise unknown painter belonging to the Leagros Group, but the correct English name appears to be "Painter A" (for instance [1]). I will rename the category. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 22:18, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Teoamez: Cases like this don't need discussion here. You can get this category deleted by putting {{bad name|Estación de Arganzuela-Planetario}} on the category. --Auntof6 (talk) 16:53, 5 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please merge the Category:Józef Bohdan Zaleski and Category:Bohdan Zaleski. Its the same. Arnaud Palastowicz (talk) 11:06, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The second one is empty, so I redirected it to the first one. It can be left that way until/unless there's a different person named just Bohdan Zaleski. --Auntof6 (talk) 16:10, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There are indeed two different persons Jozef per d:Q11731676 and d:Q1355484 but no Bohdan. So I think a redirect is ok. --Achim (talk) 18:29, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Single image in this category. Images of Paros are not otherwise categorized by year, or even decade. Is this category necessary? Themightyquill (talk) 08:33, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Note: It now has more images, and there are more categories of Paros by year. Maybe it's reasonable to keep this now? --Auntof6 (talk) 09:24, 13 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the category tree has been built up. I'm not sure it's worth categorizing by year, but I won't push to delete. - Themightyquill (talk) 19:34, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Categoria già in uso con nome simile: Category:Internazionale a Ferrara https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Internazionale_a_Ferrara Nicola Quirico (talk) 14:38, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If I understand correctly, Nicola Quirico, you are nominating a category you created Category:Festival Internazionale Ferrara for deletion, in favour of a pre-existing category Category:Internazionale a Ferrara. If that's the case, you can simply move the one file from your category to the correct category, and add either {{Category redirect|Category:Internazionale a Ferrara}} (to redirect) or {{Bad name|Category:Internazionale a Ferrara}} (to delete) to your category. - Themightyquill (talk) 18:46, 8 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This category has only one file in it. There are no similar categories in the parent one (for example: Human faces in countries, or Human faces by place, etc). The file should be moved to another category, and this one deleted. Hexafluoride (talk) 18:41, 5 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please merge the Category:Dog waste bins and Category:Dog feces containers. It's the same. Arnaud Palastowicz (talk) 22:39, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Arnaud Palastowicz: This can be resolved witbout discussion. You move everything into the category you want to keep, then on the one you're not keeping you either redirect it to the good category or request deletion using the {{Speedy}} template with a reason. I've done this, by redirecting. If you'd rather have the duplicate category deleted, feel free to change the template on it. --Auntof6 (talk) 23:03, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What is the difference between this one and Category:Bandoneons? Shouldn't they be merged somehow? Jwh (talk) 06:41, 5 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to Jwh for pointing this out. Category:Bandoneón has to be merged and redirected to Category:Bandoneons. I already did some cleanup as some people didn't know the differences between Bandoneons, Concertinas and Accordions. Two further changes are to be done: Category:Inside of bandoneons should be renamed to Category:Details of bandoneons or (IMO better) merged one level up as there are just 20, maybe 30 images at a whole after merging. And finally there are Category:Bandoneonists and Category:People playing bandoneons which might be merged to Category:Bandoneonists, because we can't decide who is a professional bandoneonist and who is a non-professional guy playing bandoneon. --Achim (talk) 18:12, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Merged Category:Bandoneón to Category:Bandoneons and left a redirect. Moved Category:Anglo concertina to Category:Anglo concertinas and did some categorising cleanup. --Achim (talk) 20:41, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • I requested the moves. I believe the requested moves are uncontroversial as they are intended to align the subcategories with the parent category, which is "Category:Waste containers". These category names seem to have been left unchanged from when the parent category used to be "Trash bins". Where there is a special term used in a particular country (e.g., litter bins in the UK and trash cans in the US), these will not be changed. — SMUconlaw (talk) 20:00, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Gamaliel: This is "categories for discussion". I see that you emptied the categories already, so the only thing left to discuss is whether they should have been emptied: empty cats don't usually require discussion. If you have an empty category you'd like deleted, you can handle that by putting {{Empty page}} on it. --Auntof6 (talk) 16:49, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Even the EU accepted that the cheese has two names, the missing one "Hellim" for Turks. So either we should change the name of this cat to Hellim-Haloumi or have a separate Hellim category for the Turkish Cypriot (TRNC) and the Turkish (Turkey) cheese. E4024 (talk) 12:55, 13 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't like these useless and never ending naming discussions. E4024, are Haloumi and Hellim different things by objective facts or are these two different names of the same thing? --Achim (talk) 18:01, 13 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I myself do not like many other things, but you will concede that what we like or not is subjective. As you have said something subjective let me also do so: I do like to discuss these name changes. It shows a level of civility and maturity. Many users of these pages -sometimes including myself- have changed names at times without considering other people's views, simply imposing their choice on others. That I believe is not the right way to do things. Therefore here I am to discuss, and not to impose. Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 06:45, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Keep, category names are supposed to be in English and halloumi is the accepted English name of this type of cheese, haloumi is an accepted variant spelling. I couldn't find hellim in an English dictionary. We don't call French cheese fromage or German cheese Käse, either. Feel free to add a description to the category page (it doesn't have one, currently). --rimshottalk 07:18, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
E4024, there are some ongoing technical efforts to provide internationalisation on Commons pages. Please be so kind to have a look at this page d:Q549793 on Wikidata. Now change at the topmost line your language to Turkish, Greek, or Bulgarian or whatever, and you will see the page's title changing as well. In a similar way it will work on Commons when the internationalising job will be done completely. Then there's no longer any need of discussing right or wrong or bad or better category names. Until then we should and will keep one category and redirect other matching names there for that's the purpose of redirects. --Achim (talk) 16:18, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I was not talking about what the Turkish name is or should be, but what name we should use in English. Have a good weekend. --E4024 (talk) 16:05, 15 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Keep English wikipedia makes no distinction. The cheese is from Cypress, so it has two local names, but the English name is undoubtedly halloumi. - Themightyquill (talk) 11:26, 16 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Per naming shown at d:Q549793 and at Google books I moved Category:Haloumi to Category:Halloumi. Category:Haloumi as well as Category:Hellim now redirect there. --Achim (talk) 19:15, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I propose renmaing this category to "Messa e processione di San Giovanni, Esino Lario 2016" because a "mass and procession of St John (the Baptist)" is annual and may happen in any part of the world. It's just that it only gets a lot of coverage this year due to its being part of Wikimania 2016. But I hesitate to do an auto-rename due to the large number of files already in this category (and I'm adding to it for now). Deryck Chan (talk) 18:11, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Two questions. First, do we have media for this event from any other year? Second, shouldn't this category name be in English, per policy? --Auntof6 (talk) 18:21, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As part of the events of Wikimania 2016 I would suggest to leave the name in Italian, as it was named in the program. But than it would make more sense to name it "Category:Wikimania 2016 - Messa e processione di San Giovanni". We could than also place it into the "Category:Feast of St. John the Baptist in Esino Lario" (perhaps somebody wants to add images from past or future events. This category should than be placed in Category:Feast of St. John the Baptist. --Wuselig (talk) 19:29, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree we should keep it in Italian because this category refers specifically to a single event in Italy. I would prefer "Esino Lario 2016" rather than "Wikimania 2016" as disambiguator because the mass is advertised on the Wikimania program, but is organised by the local church in Esino rather than Wikimania. But "Wikimania 2016" is better than no disambiguator. I'm not keen on creating "Category:Feast of St. John the Baptist in Esino Lario" because I see little value in creating a category with only 1 member, considering that "Category:Feast of St. John the Baptist" only has 10 subcats at the moment. Deryck Chan (talk) 11:01, 13 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If it's not the name of a particular wikimedia event, I don't see why it should be kept in Italian. It's a mass and procession, that's not a formal title, it's a description of the event. I'd propose Category:2016 mass and procession of St. John in Esino Lario. - Themightyquill (talk) 19:47, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I am okay with this suggestion too, and the title that User:Wuselig has moved it to. Deryck Chan (talk) 20:47, 16 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A "pill" as shown in the new Category:Fluoride therapy‎ is not a "procedure". Same for Dental splint as in Category:Dental splint. BTW this kind of splint is not to fix fractures, but for orthodontics. It belongs to Category:Dental materials‎--Partynia (talk) 09:40, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Partynia:

This category is useless. said you. Certainly, now you are right when your work has been undone everything I had done fulfilling this category . (Filling this category with the elements defined as such in the en:Category:Dentistry_procedures).

Every dentists´ activities are "Dentistry procedures", which are categorized in the Category:Dentistry. said you. The last correct phrase is "which I has been categorized...". This is the main disagreement with the common criteria. This category also exist in other 6 wikis. In Commons exists other 14 similar categories (Category:Medical procedures). With your reasoning each urological activity (en:Category:Urologic procedures or Category:Urologic procedures) should be categorized in urology (en:Category:Urology or Category:Urology) !!!.

A "pill" as shown in the new Category:Fluoride therapy‎ is not a "procedure". said you. You are right, now only exists a image with two pills. But Fluoride therapy include dentistry procedures as application of gels/foams, varnish and slow-release devices. In time there may be images of the application of these procedures, that has been considered as procedures. Then Fluoride therapy is categorized in en:Category:Dentistry_procedures.

Last phrase: Same for Dental splint as in Category:Dental splint. BTW this kind of splint is not to fix fractures, but for orthodontics. It belongs to Category:Dental materials. OK.

--Jmarchn (talk) 21:17, 25 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It´s an Over-categorization. Category:Medical procedures is also useless. All "procedures" are categorized in the parent category Category:Medical treatments. It´s not user-friendly to create a category with only 1 file. Categories in other wikis have different criteria. Yes there could be other pics about application of gels/foams, varnish and slow-release devices in Fluorid therapy. But wait till there will be any. A pill is no procedure.--Partynia (talk) 05:58, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Partynia:

You say: It´s an Over-categorization. Category:Medical procedures is also useless. All "procedures" are categorized in the parent category Category:Medical treatments..

I do not agree with the term "useless." The category is useful when it is used for wikipedians or other persons who browse these categories and today expect to find same or similar categories that are in their wikis.
We agree that this current categorization is not the best (but this is not an over-categorization). And I would use other categorizations as they could be "medical treatments" and "diagnostic procedures". And in the future it would be desirable.
The "dentistry procedures" category has sense as conceptually distinct to "dentistry" (in this category exists several differentiated subcategories: dentistry diseases, dentists or dental magazines, for example). Surely the term "dentistry treatment" would be better but is not used. In a future, always could include "dentistry diagnostic procedures" with "dentistry treatments" in the "dentistry procedures".
But this is not the problem. The problem is: "It is useful to undo the work done by other wikipedians (me, for example) can be useful in some other way and no consensus". Please, let me recover the work that I did. There is much work to do for everyone. For example, recently I categorized over 1200 images that was in the Category:Medicine and added the message to categorize ({{Categorise}}).

You say: It´s not user-friendly to create a category with only 1 file. Categories in other wikis have different criteria.

I can agree or disagree according to utility of that category (of a single file). The categorization criteria of Commons must be different to the wikipedia categorization criteria.
The main function of Commons is to provide media to wikipedia articles. So an article can contain a single image at the moment, but it is useful to have a category for that single image (in Commons) with a bidirectional link through Wikidata to that article. In this case, a wikipedian, who read an article that has no image, will see appear the link to the Commons category in that article (currently -and recently- this menu-option is active in several wikis), and thus be able to add.
In a manner contrary, it exists (as you well know) a lot of crowded categories that are perfectly useless to the wikipedias.

@Jmarchn:

Me too, I categorized about 3000 dentistry files and created al lot of new categories. At the end I saw the category "dentistry procedures" not useful, because you had to categorize there about 1500 files, which are all in other categories. I repeat: It´s not useful to put only a few files there. There had been five (five) files/links in this category, which I could categorize in better (lower) categories. After that you have linked files or cats, which were not on the target. A splint is no procedure, a pill either. Let me do my work in the category dentistry. And do your work in the category medicine. To fulfill this big task you must have in mind a catgorytree. --Partynia (talk) 22:02, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The categhory shows only pictures from the user Mark Heffron, seems to have a self-celebratory intent rather than an explanatory one, that should be proper for an encyclopedia. 79.47.29.241 19:24, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe he should have his own category—a Category:Mark Heffron—under Category:Naturism and Category:Nude men if he's naked in all (or nearly all) the images of him. Perhaps we could split the activities and bundle them with other states: particularly, Category:Nude or partially nude caving and Category:Nude or partially nude rock climbing; and put his images, or category, into these latter two (as of now redlinked) categories instead of (or maybe in addition to) the former two, if all the images of him are of only of caving and rock climbing.199.7.156.128 01:48, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It seems this is very similar to Category:Screenshots of software. I was expecting this category to contain sub-categories like "Category:Screenshots by GNOME Screenshot" or "Category:Screenshots by Scrot", etc. But it actually contains things like Category:Screenshots of Wolfram Alpha - which should actually be under Category:Screenshots of software. So I propose we merge this into Category:Screenshots of software AbdealiJK (talk) 07:01, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • This naming convention ("X by Y") is standard for metacategories. Not all categories that use it are metacategories, though: sometimes that has to be made clear in comments on the category page. It would be clearer if metacat names were more like "X grouped by Y", but that's not what we have. "Screenshots by software" can be a metacategory (grouped by either software seen in the screenshots or software used to make the screenshots). "Screenshots of software" would not be a metacategory because it doesn't say what the contents might be grouped by. Maybe we don't need a metacategory here, but if it's wanted and you don't like the existing name, we'd need a different name that would work for a metacat. Maybe "Screenshots by software shown"? --Auntof6 (talk) 09:00, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This category contains a single category which contains a single file. Nothing else in Kozova Raion is categorized by decade or year, let alone month and year. Sub-category Category:24 September 2011 in Denysiv should also be upmerged, along with Category:24 September 2015 in Ternopil and all the specific day categories in Category:September in Ternopil Oblast. Even categorizing by Oblast month and year is probably unnecessarily specific. Themightyquill (talk) 09:22, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In category Category:Ternopil Oblast is more than 20 000 files. And the number of files associated with the area is constantly growing. So categorization for the area for days, months is advisable, because it gives the possibility to see historical events and States of the Ternopil region in the photo. Categorisation process continues for a while in the rubrics will be dozens of files.--Mykola Vasylechko 16:34, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
Sure, 20 000 files in (various subcategories of) Category:Ternopil Oblast but how many in Category:2010 in Ternopil Oblast ? Well under 100. Upmerge to year unless you have a huge number of files in any given year. Otherwise why stop at the Raion level? File:Buchach-Topolkivska-HES-10099921.jpg could accurately (but unhelpfully) put in Category:Buchach HES on 4 September 2010. If we have several photos taken of the same building on the same day, we could create sub-categories for the exact time that each photo was taken so that no category ever has more than one photo. - Themightyquill (talk) 21:14, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The utility of such categories is not how many files it contains bit that it allows cross searching from categories at the same level and searching down from higher level categories, namely Category:Amphibious assault ships by country, sure if your start point is something like Category:Naval ships of India and your focus is on the individual file as it relates to that part of the tree it doesn't look all that useful, but if you're starting from other points in the category tree the greater level of intersecting categories allows it to be reached from more points creates locuses of relevant files from different start points.--KTo288 (talk) 10:37, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There are thousands of files of the Rijksmuseum as a building. Too many to fit in one category. That's why in 2010 I created a number of subcategories, for example Category:History of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. By creating this category you reintroduce the problem I had in 2010. You simply can't store all files related to the Rijksmuseum building in one category. That's why I think its better to get rid of this category. Vincent Steenberg (talk) 20:33, 8 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This is meant to distinguish pictures of the architecture of the different buildings (main building of Cuypers, fragmentengebouw, depots, teekenschool etc), and exhibitions, people and collections. 'History of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam' contains all of that, If we will have too many pictures of the main building in this category, we can add categories like 'Exterior of the West wing of the Rijksmuseum' etc --Hannolans (talk) 20:54, 8 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that's a good idea. Not many people know what the "West wing of the Rijksmuseum" is. I know that I don't. Vincent Steenberg (talk) 09:05, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Would Category:Exterior of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam be a satisfactory compromise? - Themightyquill (talk) 19:37, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Probably. What I would like is to have category we can link to from https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rijksmuseumgebouw that covers the architecture (including the decoration inside and outside) of the main building at the Stadhouderskade in Amsterdam. It should exclude the paintings, exhibitions, people, events and other buildings of the Rijksmuseum. --Hannolans (talk) 07:27, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Themightyquill: . This doesn't solve the problem. There are also hundreds of images of the exterior of the museum. Some sort of diffusion is necessary. Category:History of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam works fine, I think.
@Hannolans: The Rijksmuseum is a building. You can link to the main category Category:Rijksmuseum Amsterdam from Rijksmuseumgebouw. I don't see any problem with that. Vincent Steenberg (talk) 19:56, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This category also includes the history of the Rijksmuseum in other buildings, see for example https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Rijksmuseum_Amsterdam_in_the_1840s I just want a category for the main building, built in 1885, with the address Museumstraat 1. --Hannolans (talk) 20:13, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
yes, but have you seen how many files there are in Category:Rijksmuseum Amsterdam in the 2000s alone? You could put all of these in a separate category and diffuse it in a similar way, but this way you're only creating a more or less parallel category branch. Also, you say you want to separate the museum building from the museum collection. But how is this possible when the building was built for the collection. Category:Rijksmuseum Amsterdam by room is full of examples regarding this. Vincent Steenberg (talk) 20:35, 13 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, no I dont want to put everything with a stone in this category, but use it as a meta-category. We mainly have exterior pictures and interior pictures. The Category:Rijksmuseum Amsterdam by room is about the interior of the main building (except currently one Asian paviljoen room) and that is already a subclass of the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum building. We could split this by room category into the three categories the museum use (HG-xxx rooms for the main building, A-xxx-rooms for the Asian Paviljoen and PH-xxx-rooms for the Philipsvleugel) Another subclass we need is Rijksmuseum Amsterdam exterior as mentioned above. That we can split in eastside, westside, northside and southside overview and some detailed categories if needed for the tiles, doors, towers etc. --Hannolans (talk) 22:39, 13 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Vincent Steenberg: I really don't understand how you can object to a category full of pictures of the exterior of a single building. That's a perfectly reasonable classification of images, one very common here on commons. There's no absolute need to diffuse a category with hundreds of images, but if someone wanted to, it could be done in many ways (images of the front facade, etc.). None of this would have any impact on the categorization of the museum by year. - Themightyquill (talk) 07:21, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
ok, maybe I'm missing the point. Why don't we do this. @Hannolans: you wrote an article about the Rijksmuseum building. By now you probably know more about it that I do. So why don't you deal with the building. Then I will deal with the collection. Like that we're not on each other's hair. Vincent Steenberg (talk) 10:14, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. I altered this category to '- Main Building', that makes it clear that this is about the 'Cuypers cathedral' only. In the 'by room' part it all comes together. I will try to mimic the Louvre categories as can be found here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Exterior_of_the_Palais_du_Louvre --Hannolans (talk) 21:28, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Sansiantai Bridge" is obviously problematic for the reasons of category-naming policy, as per discussion at User_talk:Bgag. I suspected that this category may be a self-made name, but Bgag can't confirm that as correct. Not many people know what the "Sansiantai Bridge" is.

According to the Overseas Community Affairs Council report "The First Light of the New Year 迎接2014,全台民眾瘋第一道曙光" quote "Of course, Sanxiantai is worth a visit at other times of year too. The 400 meter-long eight-arched bridge is one of the area’s most famous landmarks, but there are other attractions as well." In my experience and also according to East Coast National Scenic Area is written "eight cross-sea arch bridge" and TAITUNG Taiwan's Treasure is written "eightarch cross-ocean bridge".

Ultimately, my request is: I think this category should be deleted to make way for Category:Eight Cross-sea Arch Bridge (you can also select other categories: Category:Eightarch Cross-ocean Bridge or Category:Eight-arched Bridge) to be moved here.--Liji (talk) 07:38, 24 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
