This category has no clear purpose. "Otros" is the word "Others" in Spanish. The user that created the category at the start also added some non-sense as the category description. The category is OK, but we have no content for it. What's here is just free-energy nonsense and doesn't belong on Commons at all. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:47, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

One of the properties of a capacitor's dielectric is its infallible ability to put out more energy than what went into it upon completion of a cycle of abruptly (not gradually as a sweep) varying its capacitant parameter first up, and then downward, or the inverse. If this alteration is within a window large enough to do damage to its stability - say, using a maximum value of 10 Farads and a minimum of 10 milli Farads, then statistically speaking it will entertain a higher energy state than it did prior to the cycle most of the time. Parametric excitation may also reduce its energy state (most of the time) when outside this window or (all the time) whenever the abrupt change in parameter is not immediately prior to the peak or trough of each wave, but (instead) immediately afterwards. This qualifies it as SED: Stochastic electrodynamics which endears this topic to a more thorough discussion than merely claiming nonsense.Vinyasi (talk) 14:06, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • One of the properties of a capacitor's dielectric is its infallible ability to put out more energy than what went into it
Sorry, but that's untrue. Populating a category with nonsense is not how this project should operate. Andy Dingley (talk) 16:52, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Andy Dingley: No need to be sorry, for it is true. It's called leverage, for example: when a voltage controlled switch uses negligible energy to control much larger energies. Altering the capacitance of a dielectric in an abrupt manner to produce a gain or loss of energy far greater than accepted Laws of Thermodynamics has specified is how this project should operate. For we are in the business of information. And information is sorely lacking. Take that vaulted hallmark of the Laws of Physics for example. It is merely an honorary title given to some scientific facts to discredit (by way of distraction) other scientific facts who do not possess this honorary title. Parametric amplification due to Parametric oscillations or excitations (call it what you will by synonymously mutual association) is a known scientific fact deserving of admission into The Laws of Physics underneath the subcategory of Thermodynamic Laws since Parametric amplification deals with both loss and gain at a rate of loss or gain which cannot be explained by the current assortment of Thermodynamic Laws provided (I believe there are merely four at present count?).Vinyasi (talk) 05:59, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Then, we agree to disagree?Vinyasi (talk) 16:55, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Andy Dingley: Unless you think File:Varactor parametric amplifier 1958.jpg doesn't belong here (despite being used in a wikipedia article) then we do have some content. If you believe some of the other content his is out of scope, please nominate it for deletion. But I don't see a problem with the category itself. -- Themightyquill (talk) 09:38, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Themightyquill: Education is a tender thing. What's educational for one is not for another. Who is to decide on behalf of whomever else prior to a future wherein hindsight changes everything? Shall we burn books, now, and only ask questions (if that) afterward?Vinyasi (talk) 23:13, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The varactor image(s) were added after I filed this CfD. Also there is still a distinction between parametric oscillators and parametric amplifiers.
The problem is two-fold. Vinyasi has uploaded a set of pseudo-science images. They have no place here. They've then categorized them into a number of inappropriate categories. They have even less place there. Now, what's to do? I would support deleting them altogether, but that's asking more than simply not abusing genuine categories to fill them with nonsense. Also one of them is an old newspaper report, which does have some value (although not in these categories). Andy Dingley (talk) 11:05, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Andy, I don't understand what is the purpose of this discussion if, instead of responding, you go ahead and nominate for deletion all of my postings? Why don't I nominate all of these discussions for their complete removal as being of trivial non-importance since you obviously don't take my responses very seriously enough to participate in making a response? Fair enough? I'm not kidding. What were you thinking, Andy, by jumping the gun so-to-speak? Is that your method of discussion? To respond with action instead of counter-logic and ignore my questions? It lends the impression that holding a discussion, here, was vastly trivial and merely a token gesture to show everyone that you were acting in good faith.Vinyasi (talk) 20:05, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Andy Dingley: So... My position remains without a counter-rationale offered by yourself. All we have, is not a discussion anymore, but a disagreement along with a flurry of activity. Where's the discussion? Or, when were you planning on having it? Did it die?Vinyasi (talk) 20:05, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As part of a mass recategorization by User:Petebutt on December 4, most of the subcategories presently listed in Category:Aircraft engine manufacturers are now miscategorized. My proposal is to return all of the "engines" categories in Category:Aircraft engine manufacturers to Category:Aircraft engines by brand. Subcategories that represent actual manufacturers (e.g., Category:Williams International, Category:Comet Engine Corporation should remain, and categories that really aren't presently but really should be listed here should be identified (notably Category:Pratt & Whitney) and included here. Don't worry just another personal attack on me after trying to rationalise categories. I have placed all the aircraft engine categories under Manufacturers. There is no reason somebody that wants to over-categorise can't put extra categories on . I was doing maintenance and found it impoissible to navigate through the various un-necessary categories to find the files I needed. Sorry if making things better upsets your sensibilities.--Petebutt (talk) 11:30, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Petebutt: engines are products (goods), whereas manufacturers are companies. You indeed derationalise categories. If you feel that some categories should be eliminated, then explain your case for it. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 12:04, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Petebutt: It's not a personal attack and it doesn't upset my sensibilities. It breaks the basic categorization structure of commons and results in real problems (where, for instance, a category a company and another category for the engines produced by that company end up in the same parent category). I've reverted your edits, and I hope you'll accept that. You're a knowledgeable contributor when it comes to aircraft, but I wish you would be more respectful of commons categorization schemes and stop trying to do things your own way without discussing things first. - Themightyquill (talk) 11:09, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@DanielPenfield: I rolled back some Petebutt’s depredations against Aircraft engines by brand, as well as Aircraft piston engines by brand, but am unqualified in the field. Ask an aerospace expert to bring some order to ravaged categories. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 19:31, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That makes sense. If there's a strong feeling that Category:Change of command ceremonies should be used instead, that's also fine with me. Redirects should of course be left in place. - Themightyquill (talk) 10:20, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

empty, incorrect named (all content was moved into Category:Imams). -- Kaganer (talk) 20:00, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete it then; but as we have in Turkish the male name "İmam" there may also be people with the name "Imam" elsewhere. I could not see anybody in Commons with the Turkish name "İmam"; what about "Imam"? --E4024 (talk) 20:06, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
"İmam" is Category:Emam (given name). Is not known given name "Imam". --Kaganer (talk) 18:46, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There are many things that exist although we may not always be aware of them. In Turkey/Turkish we have the name İmam and neither I nor you can change that fact. --E4024 (talk) 18:51, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I'm saw, that Turkish "İmam" in some cases transliterated into English "Emam" or "Imam" or used without transliteration. Also, in English Wikipedia w:en:Imam (disambiguation) currently is redirected to w:en:Emam.
Ok, this may be kept. --Kaganer (talk) 06:12, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but an empty cat is generally deleted. What English Wikipedia does (I did not look at it) with the name/title "Imam" is not what concerns me. I was only trying to explain that there is a given name, İmam, in Turkish. For example the famous Sütçü İmam whose name has been given to a university and other institutions. "İmam", who lived before the Surname Law in Turkey, was a dairy man until his town was occupied, and then turned into a guerrilla, militia head or whatever to call someone who fought for his country. ("Sütçü İmam" means "İmam, the dairy guy".) There are many other people with the given name İmam in Turkey. When one of them has his images here then we will need the cat, but not this one; another one with "İ". This discussion can be closed. --E4024 (talk) 17:10, 11 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wrongly named cat. Instead of moving it maybe better merging it with the Category:Portraits of scientists. E4024 (talk) 19:20, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's an old book that has pictures. It just needs more book categories and maybe some biography or portraiture cats. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:52, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, my error. It's not a particular book but a source category, for pictures on a theme from the collection of the Smithsonian library system. The pictures should indeed be kept together as having been curated for this topic by someone there. Renaming, I think, would take care of it, and some parental category adjustments. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:27, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
First: it should be renamed to "Portraits of Scientists and inventors". Simply merging it with Category:Portraits of scientists would be wrong, because some inventors may mot be scientists. Therefore a new category Category:Portraits of inventors would be necessary. If this collection is a from a book of the Smithsonian library, these pictures should be kept together in a sub-category under "Smithsonian Institution Libraries". --ProfessorX (talk) 15:39, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In this case, the Smithsonian's category tree doesn't match with ours, so move this category to Category:Smithsonian Institution Libraries (Portraits of Scientists and Inventors), remove from Category:Portraits of scientists and then copy each image to Category:Portraits of scientists or Category:Portraits of (whatever is appropriate), and remove them all from Category:Smithsonian Institution Libraries. - Themightyquill (talk) 17:47, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As in Wikupedia and as usual russian given name Георгий is translated into English. For example: Georgy Zhukov, Georgy Beregovoy etc. Окончание ИЙ обычно передается как Y[10] --KSK (talk) 11:38, 8 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DAB from Category:Iron Maiden (torture), while the galleries and WP articles rely on w:WP:DIFFCAPS there is a higher requirement for clarity with ambiguous names, see for example Category:Red Dwarf (TV series) and Category:The Police (musical group). Category:Iron Maiden should be the DAB. Note also that on Wikipedia the category is at w:Category:Iron Maiden (band). Crouch, Swale (talk) 11:46, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Qur'an schools and Madrasas are the same thing. People open different cats without looking around. Either use the original word ("Madrasa") or an English explanation like "Qur'an schools" but not both. IPs hover around "Islamic" themes and we get unnecessary work. E4024 (talk) 19:38, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I was going to suggest merging to Madrasa, but after reading en:Madrasa, I'm not sure: "Madrasa is the Arabic word for any type of educational institution, secular or religious (of any religion), whether for elementary instruction or higher learning. (...) In the West, the word usually refers to a specific type of religious school or college for the study of the Islamic religion, though this may not be the only subject studied. In countries like India, not all students in madrasas are Muslims; there is also a modern curriculum." - Themightyquill (talk) 10:13, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Would it be worth moving everything to Category:Islamic madrasas (and so forth), a term used in en:Madrasa, for clarity. Or is that unnecessary? - Themightyquill (talk) 09:12, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Upmerge to Category:Children's libraries in Ukraine unless there's a demonstrable need to subdivide by Oblast. Themightyquill (talk) 09:43, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi! Every district (or big city, or distrist of the city) have itself children library in Ukraine. So, 27 dictricts and 6 city of regional subdivision of Kharkiv region and 9 dictricts of Kharkiv have children libraries. I have some photos of children libraries in Kharkiv region and for a few days upload them to this commons category, so I oppose merge this category with global category. --Kharkivian (talk) 10:49, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'd splitt that categorie in two: one ist the gamekeeper cat and the other is the hunter cat. Sanandros (talk) 21:56, 23 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Fine. But while we're at it: We should definitely rename the whole "Gamekeepers" cat into "Professional hunters". Every gamekeeper is a professional hunter, but not every professional hunter is a gamekeeper. Just think about the images of USDA Wildlife Services agents, who shoot feral hogs from helicopters and kill birds at airfields. --Tilon3 (talk) 22:38, 23 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Sanandros and Tilon3: I'm not sure that the British or US distinguishing in English terms is fully applicable to Central European facts. The Czech term "myslivec" is translated by both terms, hunter as well as gamekeeper. Are you sure, there ever exist or existed some "Professional hunters" in Czechia? Are you sure that "professional hunters" is a real equivalent of "gamekeepers"? Have you some knowledges about the history and relations of forestry and gamekeeping in Europe? I cann't imagine how you want to classify photos or paintings of hunters in Czechia. --ŠJů (talk) 00:15, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Is there no distinction between regular hunters and professional gamekeepers in the Czech language? In German regular hunters are called "Jäger", while professional hunters / gamekeepers are called Berufsjäger / Wildhüter. "exist or existed some "Professional hunters" in [XY]" Regardless of the country: If there are people, who do hunting and hunting related work as a profession (as opposed to recreational hunting), then yes. And since "professional hunter" constitutes the umbrella term, I'd suggest to either rename the existing category "Gamekeepers" into "Professional hunters" or to create a new category "Professional hunters" and make "Gamekeepers" a subcategory of it. --Tilon3 (talk) 02:13, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
But there is also a problem of the subcats. Right now we categorize Czech non professional hunters in the cat of gamekeepers which they are not.--Sanandros (talk) 04:58, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Then we have to sort out who is who. The Czech non professional hunters get their own "Hunters in Czechia‎" cat as a subcat of the "Hunters by country", while the Czech professional hunters / gamekeepers get a their own subcat in the "Professional hunters" cat. Problem solved? @Sanandros: --Tilon3 (talk) 08:02, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes we can do that (if you have enaugh czech huntinng knowledge) but why did u change my username?--Sanandros (talk) 15:36, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No idea how that happend (mayby a copy+paste-mishap). I probably shouldn't work with 100+ tabs in my browser... --Tilon3 (talk) 19:43, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Am I suppossed to do something or is it normal that nothing happens regarding the moving of the cat and the renaming? @ User:Sanandros Don't want to be pushy, I'm just a bit unfamiliar with the rules here. Regarding the the topic: From what I understand, the Czech have, as the czech title of the cat "Myslivci a lovci v Česku" says, two words meaning hunter: "myslivec" and "lovec", but while literally translated "myslivec" also means gamekeeper it doesn't imply the professionalism, that an english speaker associates with the term gamekeeper. In conclusion: All the people respectivly images in the cat "Gamekeepers and hunters in Czechia" can be considered normal hunters exept proven otherwise (that is: doing hunting a profession/job). Therefore I'd suggest to rename the cat "Gamekeepers and hunters in Czechia" into "Hunters from Czechia" and rename the cat "Gamekeepers" into "Professional hunters", so that gamekeepers (the typical Scottish one) and other professional hunters (like the Wildlife Services trappers and the german "Berufsjäger" = professional hunters) have a cat name, that fits them both. --Tilon3 (talk) 00:30, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a problem. Yes we can do what you suggested. It is just easier for somebody who is speaking Czech to do the changes but if you want I can also do it but give me for that some time.--Sanandros (talk) 21:32, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This country is no longer officially known as Swaziland, its official title in English is the Kingdom of Eswatini. Enwiki has changed the article name and several category names to reflect this. This category and subs should be changed to reflect the country's correct name. Josh (talk) 22:57, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Good, but please spell it correctly. If it helps, note that the correct spelling contains the word swat. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:33, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, no 'Kingdom of' in the category name. Josh (talk) 16:40, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Unless these are specific categories for that form of government, within a category like "Government of Eswatini" and for including subcategories for kings or royal families, or if this is related to the precolonial history (or in the history of colonial South Africa) where distinctions of different entities (in present-day Eswatini, possibly also covering areas outside of it) may be needed. verdy_p (talk) 22:01, 26 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Ruthven: Could you help with this? Please note the exceptions included in the wikipedia discussion that Crouch, Swale has listed above. PS: There is this one, that looks weird, can you please double check? Category:Copyright rules of eSwatini

Notes
(*) ! - This categories have been moved to the new name, but it is a problem to get the subcategories there. For these subcategories the parent category is not noted at the bottom of the site as usual but hidden somewhere in a template which I could not identify or change because of too much complexity. A specialist for templates has to take care of this. I think it would make sense to take this opportunity to rename these templates, for example from "Template:Aviation in Swaziland decade" to "Template:Aviation in Eswatini decade".--Bestoernesto (talk) 08:30, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(**) !! - Here the categories are moved / renamed to *Eswatini* and the anachronistic category *Swaziland* page does not contain any pages or files anymore, but there are still countless wiki links to the redirection. This is apparently due to a chain of nested templates, which I assume usually start with the template {{{Countries of Africa}}. But it seems that there are also some other templates that use the obsolete name "Swaziland". I don't think it's in our interest to update (almost) all categories to *Eswatini* if the *Swaziland" category is still referenced from the corresponding navigation boards of other countries. First of all, 2 years after the renaming of the country, all half educated people will search in vain for the alphabetically sorted "Eswatini" on the navigation boards. (Less educated people will probably hardly deal with the topic "categories" at Commons) And secondly, if someone then discovers and clicks on the obsolete term "Swaziland", he currently only lands on the anachronistic category *Swaziland* page and has to click there again to get to the desired current category *Eswatini* page, since there is no automatic redirect. This unfortunately slows down a quick navigation.--Bestoernesto (talk) 14:07, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed Category:Mantenga Swazi Cultural Village, Category:Swazi Airways, and Category:King Mswati III International Airport. @Crouch, Swale: Have I missed anything else important?
Wikipedia kept all dated categories prior to 2018 as "Swaziland", but created "21st century in in Eswatini." That would mean Category:Swaziland in the 2000s stas the same, but Category:Swaziland in the 2010s gets renamed. Should we follow that example? - Themightyquill (talk) 08:32, 6 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Themightyquill: I think many of the specific year categories (that it to say those before 2018) see w:Category:Years of the 21st century in Eswatini would use "Swaziland" while those that deal with both before 2018 and after such as Category:Swaziland in the 2010s should use "Eswatini". In other words Category:2015 in Swaziland shouldn't be renamed since at that time it was "Swaziland" Category:2019 in Swaziland should be renamed to Category:2019 in Eswatini since at that time (now!) the country is "Eswatini". Category:Transport in Swaziland in the 2010s should be renamed since it deals with both times when it was "Swaziland" and "Eswatini". Any yes other categories that aren't based on a specific time-frame (and their sub categories) such as Category:Sport in Swaziland should be renamed unless the name "Swaziland" is part of the name of an entity. So for example in you're list;
  • 1951 in Swaziland
  • 1998 events in Swaziland
  • 1998 in sports in Swaziland
  • 1998 in Swaziland
  • 1998 sports events in Swaziland
  • 2003 in Swaziland
  • 2004 in aviation in Swaziland
  • 2004 in Swaziland
  • 2004 in transport in Swaziland
  • 2006 in Swaziland
  • 2009 in Swaziland
  • 2012 in Swaziland
  • 2014 in Swaziland
  • 2015 in aviation in Swaziland
  • 2015 in Swaziland
  • 2015 in transport in Swaziland
  • 2016 in Swaziland
  • 2017 in Swaziland
would be renamed but not "2019 in Swaziland". That should apply to the rest. Crouch, Swale (talk) 11:50, 6 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's how I imagined it, as that's what wikipedia has done. Our pattern here is a little inconsistent, since we do have anachronisms like Category:1532 in the United States‎. But unless anyone opposes, I suppose we'll just follow wikipedia's lead in the case of Swaziland vs Eswatini. - Themightyquill (talk) 12:11, 6 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that for renaming a country category, you must NOT replace directly the old name by the new name in the data module: you need to preserve the old name as a secondary alias. Otherwise navigation is immediately broken across all related pages using {{Countries of Africa}}, because it cannot locate the old pages waiting to be renamed.
Then for renaming, don't create a new category, but use "rename" to move the page (this also updates the entry in Wikidata), and keep the new redirecting page with the old name to the new name, and if that old page is a category, of course you need to move its contents to the new category. You should keep the redirecting template left in the old category (not blank it, not delete it), as it really helps the navigation, from within this wiki but as well from external sites (including search engines) that can locate the new name with no surprise. The redirecting category can remain empty (no members), with just the redirecting template, and should no longer be linked with pages on other wikis (check Wikidata to fix that). verdy_p (talk) 20:52, 26 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What does "Geobiography" even mean? What is the point of this category? And of its sole image? This is part of a series of similar weird categories by User:Istkart, which should all probably be deleted. Sandstein (talk) 18:36, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Copied from talk page: "Geobiography represents the geographical aspect of a person’s biography from birth and throughout life. We created a series of maps by country, allowing you to visually display the picture in which cities and countries the great scientists (Nobel, Fields, Abel and Turing awards) lived and worked in different years. Maps allow you to conduct various kinds of space-time analysis of scientific life. We consider this work important and useful. " - User:Istkart

This category is undefined. There is no common understanding of "partial nudity". I started a discussion at the Village Pump to try and determine consensus about what it meant, but it got nowhere. Lacking even the most basic definitiion, there is no point in maintaining this category. This would logically include all the "nude or partially nude" subcategories, of which there are many. Perhaps splitting those categories into "bottomless" and "topless" categories (as someone suggested) makes the most sense. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 22:22, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • The problem might be that "partial nudity" isn't well defined. We can talk about toplessness or bottomlessness, but to some cultures exposing the legs or arms can be an issue as well. Also, any category named "Foo1 or foo2" that has foo1 and foo2 as separate categories under it needs to be rethought. Maybe this category and any with "nude or partially nude" in the name need to be rethought and/or renamed: perhaps "states of undress"?
Besides that, there are a couple of subcategories here that I don't think belong: intergluteal cleft (which can be seen without the person being nude) and undressing (which can be at a state where the person is not yet nude). --Auntof6 (talk) 20:57, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • @TwoWings: I moved some images out of the "nude or partially nude" categories because I thought it was obvious that they didn't depict nude or partially nude people. Apparently some people feel that a woman wearing a bikini or a bra and panties is "partially nude" and my changes were reverted. That's what started this whole discussion. The "topless" and "bottomless" categories would be for images that are considered "partial nudity". Nude images would be by themselves. Each existing categories would be expanded into as many as three categories (if needed). Women wearing bikinis would be in none of them, since they are not nude, topless, or bottomless. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 02:28, 15 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Read over the discussion from the Village Pump again. There is no consensus about what "partially nude" means. As for the definition you suggest, I agree with it, but other editors have different ideas. So this category (and all subcategories) are ambiguous and images get added or removed depending on how individual editors interpret "partially nude". That is a problem, even if the categories have been around a long time. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 22:48, 15 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Split into Category:Nudity and Category:Partial nudity. Proper definition of 'partial nudity' can be developed and if warranted, the category can be renamed to match. Josh (talk) 21:27, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If there was consensus on what "partially nude" meant, we wouldn't need to have this discussion. Having a separate Category:Partial nudity doesn't solve that problem. I believe "bottomless" and "topless" are much more likely to be interpreted correctly. World's Lamest Critic (talk) 04:02, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Even if perfectly defined, the categories should be split. One is either nude or partially nude, there is no value to an 'or' category that arbitrarily clumps them together. If you want to further break it down into bottomless and topless, more power to you. But the 'or' should go. Josh (talk) 23:08, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Let's add yet another example: Nude or partially nude women urinating. What is this? As I understand it, people almost always remove some clothing when urinating (except, say, when they use a urine bag - but if they did this fully clothed, how would we see it?). How much clothing do they have to remove before being considered "partially nude"? And why is there no Nude or partially nude men urinating? Brianjd (talk) 12:12, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Just when I thought I had seen everything...Barefoot is in Partial nudity! So apparently everything is partial nudity, unless you can't see the person at all? At least Faces is not in that category, although I suppose even that might depend on which religion you follow... Brianjd (talk) 14:58, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • It seems we are discussing two different issues here:
    • 1) What is the definition of 'partial nudity' and what belongs or doesn't in such a category (if such a category should even exits, that is). This one seems the more contentious one as there seems a divergence between the social concept of nudity (basically exposure of skin not normal and/or acceptable to be exposed) versus the technical concept which would include any exposed skin whatsoever. Since the social concept will differ across different cultures and situations, it is not appropriate for Commons to enforce a given social standard of nudity as that will necessarily be implicitly biased, and thus go against Commons policy. It is questionable if using the technical concept would offer any value, but it would not be a policy violation. I would suggest that perhaps the general concept of partial nudity can be done away with, but instead specific categories for each 'part' that is exposed can be set up (nude legs, nude genitals, nude shoulders, whatever is supported by the existing files on Commons).
    • 2) How to structure 'partial nudity' vs. 'nudity' or 'full nudity'. Clearly the current category "Nudity or partial nudity" has to change, as it is a clear violation of both the Simplicity Principle (it combines too many criteria into one) and the Selectivity Principle (it puts more than one topic in the same category). There are two (possibly three) distinct topics here, and they need to be arranged per the Hierarchic Principle. They are the general topic of nudity, the topic of partial nudity, and perhaps the topic of full nudity. Since all are encompassed within general nudity, Category:Nudity should be the main category with the others as children.
  • Thus, I propose that we take step one to immediately fix the policy violations and structure the categories as follows and that the more nuanced discussion over defining partial nudity can carry on its own within the scope of its own branch.
    • Category:Nudity (main category for all nudity-related content)
      • Category:Partial nudity (sub-category for the concept of partial nudity; what this contains or doesn't and whether it is retained or renamed or split into something new can be its own discussion)
      • Category:Full nudity (can be created if desired and discussed in its own right, but if it exists, it should be a sub-cat of Category:Nudity)
  • The above change will bring this category into compliance with existing policy and create a framework that the discussion regarding partial nudity (and whatever resolutions arrived at) can be better undertaken within. Josh (talk) 07:33, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment The above proposal is strictly for the topic of nudity itself. The related topic of Nude or partially nude people is its own ball of wax and deserves its own discussion. Nothing in this proposal should be presumed to apply to Nude or partially nude people, though of course some of the discussion may be relevant to that chat when it happens. Josh (talk) 20:30, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@World's Lamest Critic, Brianjd, Dronebogus, and TwoWings: Can we go ahead and wrap up this one, or does anyone have more to bring to table about this? Josh (talk) 20:30, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What if anything is the consensus? Dronebogus (talk) 23:44, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
i think the suggestion of separating into "bottomless .." and "topless .." is the best solution.
take File:Swimmer at Cascais in Portugal.jpg as an example. revealing the nipples is considered nude in many cultures, while not revealing the pubic areas can be considered "not fully nude", so depending on the user, this photo can be either nude or partially nude.
on the other hand, File:Green Deep V-neck Backless Halter Dress - Backside.jpg halternecks revealing the back can also be considered a form of nudity in some cultures, so is this photo "nude", "partially nude" or "clothed"? it only depends on every user's own perspective.
after separation into "bottomless", "topless", "barefoot" etc., they can all be put into "partial nudity".
(full) nudity is easily defined. it's when a person is unclothed around both their chest and pubic area. even if they are wearing shoes or stockings, that's still (full) nudity. RZuo (talk) 08:15, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
after this, then "Nude or partially nude people with lions" can become "nude people with lions" with two subcats "fully nude people with lions" and "partially nude people with lions". "nude xx" will become the overall parent cat for all forms of nudity. RZuo (talk) 08:18, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:User-specific galleries, templates and categories#Categories says "Categories shouldn't be created to collect files based on a user's personal opinion (e.g. User:Example's favourite pictures)". The nominated category is exactly this and does not even contain actually COM:QI-promoted images. Also nominating its subcategories (below) for the same reasons. @HyperGaruda: Quality images of Egypt (Choosen by Muhammad Adel) was a temp name until i finish categorizing Quality images of Egypt. The name could be moved to just "Quality images of Egypt". all subcategories contains photographs that i think meets with Quality image guidelines, I just didn't know that it must be nominated first to be described as quality images. Is it possible to hold the deletion process until i finish nominating all images, it took me several days choosing, evaluating and categorizing these images.--Muhammad adel007 (talk) 05:34, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Muhammad adel007: I've created a list of all the relevant images in User:Muhammad adel007/Quality images, based on what is currently placed in these categories. From what I have seen, there are quite some images that will never pass QI guidelines. Easy guidelines to apply yourself are image size (minimum is 2 megapixel) and distortions (buildings should not be tilted due to improper perspective). If you want, I can filter out these low-quality pictures for you. This way, COM:QI will not get flooded with zero-chance files. --HyperGaruda (talk) 19:59, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@HyperGaruda: I appreciate the help offer, if your time allow it please do the filtration process.--Muhammad adel007 (talk) 20:25, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have started screening the images. I think I should be able to give you the final list of candidate photos this weekend. Then it will be up to you to nominate them at COM:QIC. Please do be aware that they only accept 5 nominations per user per day. --HyperGaruda (talk) 21:21, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Muhammad adel007: hi, I have finished pre-filtering your list of QI candidates; most low-resolution, overprocessed and bad-perspective should be gone now. Because each user can only nominate 5 images per day at COM:QIC, I suggest you go through the list yourself and keep only those that are really worth the effort. --HyperGaruda (talk) 09:00, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @HyperGaruda: I really appreciate the help and the advice.--Muhammad adel007 (talk) 09:06, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the main category from Category:Quality images of Egypt. The subcategories should have Template:hiddencat added to them because they are user categories, and their name is problematic as "Quality images of" still indicates promoted QI's. (They could be renamed to something like Category:Work_by_Muhammad_Adel/Potential Quality Images which indicates a user category.) --Trougnouf (talk) 17:55, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
