soon-to-be empty category. all content has been previously deleted. the same treatment has been given the other content from/about this person across other projects. Quakewoody (talk) 21:17, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- What is it that we are supposed to discuss here? I see that someone has asked the deletion of all files in this cat. As soon as it becomes empty it may be speedy deleted by a simple speedy deletion request. If we are not going to discuss anything about a cat please do not open CfDs. --E4024 (talk) 00:15, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
- You are completely aware that there are numerous empty categories that go unnoticed. If it is nominated, it makes it harder to slip through the cracks. Quakewoody (talk) 14:42, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
- If they are unnoticed they will be unnoticed all the same. If you notice an empty cat use the speedy deletion request, not occupy here. What is so sophisticated not to understand about this? We have the template SDC2 which reads as "Speedy delete: Unuseful empty category". (So also consider that not all empty cats are unuseful.) --E4024 (talk) 14:53, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
- Closing this unnecessary discussion. As soon as the cat is emptied I myself will ask its speedy deletion. CfD is for "discussing cats" and not for "deletion of empty cats". --E4024 (talk) 14:56, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

I came across this on Wikidata - A category for a film maker, containing one image of a person and one image of a movie poster. No mention of either on wikipedia. Her article (in Turkey) was deleted. And very few mentions on the internet. Not even IMDb listings. Do we need to keep the category or the files? Quakewoody (talk) 18:20, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- If the files aren't suitable then nominate them and then this will be deleted as empty otherwise I'd be inclined to keep the category. Crouch, Swale (talk) 12:11, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- I realize that this is "Categories for discussion", but can't we delete the images as well? I did include them at the top. That was my reasoning. I even asked Do we need to keep the category or the files.
- This question actually pertains to more than just this discussion, as I have other categories nominated where I asked the images also be deleted, but did not nominate them individually. Quakewoody (talk) 14:24, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Quakewoody: you need to use the standard deletion requests for files, if they are deleted then this will be empty otherwise its unlikely an admin will delete the files since they haven't been tagged for deletion. Crouch, Swale (talk) 14:25, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
- Keep and close. As a columnist and filmmaker she is within our scope. The images have OTRS permissions. Nothing to discuss here. Only loss of time and energy. E4024 (talk) 01:55, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

This category is empty, so I tagged it with {{Empty page}}. That was reverted by Billinghurst with the edit summary "exists and part of WD link, best to discuss". It was my understanding that Commons is a media repository and not an encyclopedia, and so we do not keep empty categories as placeholders, even for things whose existence is not in dispute. This category was created over two years ago, so there has been sufficient time to populate it, and yet it is empty. The point of discussion is whether to keep or not. - Keep The galaxy isn't going anywhere and someone at some point will wish to upload a photograph and it will be categorised. There is no value in deleting a usable and WD linked category. There is no value in this sort of maintenance and tidying, it doesn't simplify anything, it doesn't save space, etc. Nothing to do with being an encyclopaedia or not, this category is part of a framework, used by WD, and will appear as links at linked wikis. — billinghurst sDrewth 11:01, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

Unexplained move to a German name when, arguably, there should be an English equivalent; See Com:Categories#Category_names. I see nothing wrong wth the parent categories, and although I requested an explanation, I haven't had a timely one. Sadly, its creator seems bent on creating out of lingua franca categories, and although I am fully aware that some words in German do not have exact English equivalents, e.g. zugszwang, that does not excuse a unilateral recategorisation to a version opaque to most users and against guidelines. Rodhullandemu (talk) 23:25, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
- I didn't move the category, that is incorrect. I created a category for a topic that didn't have one on its own. The parent category Category:Rail transport traffic control diagrams is a category for different types diagrams. My motivation was to create a separate category for a concept that is definitely notable. That doesn't mean the name is set; if there is an English name I am happy to move it.
- Please stop assuming I am "bent on" these categories. You came to my talk page wondering why I chose a German name but right away suggested "undoing all this" which definitely wouldn't solve the problem. It is a little bit weird that you were asking if "Rail transport diagrams" may be a suitable translation first but immediately afterwards you were very sure that these are called "Rail transport traffic control diagrams". I couldn't find any source which uses this name. --PhiH (talk) 06:25, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

The category is empty after having decided on Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Dunkelberg. Leyo 13:45, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- There is no need to "discuss" an empty cat. If you see it difficult to be filled again in a reasonable time, you can ask its speedy deletion by adding "{SD|C2}". (The {} signs should be "double".) I personally prefer to wait for some time before requesting the deletion of cats about notable people, because new files can come and the cat -even as empty- fulfills a function of union among three actors: WP, WD and Commons. Thanks for reading. --E4024 (talk) 14:19, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

Not all photographs are taken "in the Netherlands". See explanation below. JopkeB (talk) 05:31, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
- Situation
In Commons there are at least 1800 photos of the Nederlandse Heidemaatschappij about forestry. A significant part of it is missing essential information such as location and date, which cannot be found on the website either. These photos were initially placed in the Category: Forestry in the Netherlands, so I assumed that they were taken in the Netherlands. For these photos I have made sub-categories and I am working on re-categorization. During this process, however, I discovered that an unknown number of them, probably many hundreds, were not made in the Netherlands, but during excursions and working visits in other (European?) countries. Indications for this: Some photos contain information boards with foreign texts or show high mountains that do not occur in the flat Netherlands. Many photos also show groups watching demonstrations of forestry. Occasionally there is a Dutch text on a truck or a vehicle that has a Dutch license plate, so I can assume that those photos were taken in the Netherlands. But forests and forest workers in Europe are too similar to determine in which country the other photos were taken. In any case, I saw photos from Sweden, Finland, Germany, France, Poland and English-speaking countries. I have already placed those photos in categories for those countries.
- The problem
Of the 800 or so photos that I have categorized into sub-categories "in the Netherlands" so far, a considerable part will not have been taken in the Netherlands but in other European countries. These photos are therefore incorrectly categorized, but it is impossible to determine which photos are involved. In addition, about 1,000 photos are waiting for better categorization, but I'd like to be sure to place them in the right sub-category right away.
- My proposal
- Keep the current Forestry in the Netherlands category structure for photos that are certain to have been taken in the Netherlands.
- Transfer the photos of the Nederlandse Heidemaatschappij that are now there, to the same category structure, still to be made, but with the name "20st-century forestry somewhere in Europe" (or instead of "somewhere": "unidentified countries", which makes it fits better in the Commons structure, but I have little hope that they will ever become "identified") and with a good description at the top. Remarks:
- The name can possibly be supplemented with "of the Nederlandse Heidemaatschappij", but this can also be omitted, so that other cases also fit in.
- My advice: Do not immediately include these photos in the (not yet existing) (sub-) categories Forestry in Europe, because otherwise pollution will occur there. I think it is better to make a separate structure with a distinctive name for this.
- After that, I'll transfer back the photos of which I am sure, to the sub-categories of Forestry in the Netherlands.
- And finally I'll start with the rest of the uncategorized photos, which are then in the new main category "20st-century forestry somewhere in Europe" (or something similar).
- Requests
- Suggestions, other approaches, support, constructive criticism, etc. that can lead to a solution for this problem.
- As soon as there is a solution: Someone who can and wants to transfer the files from the Forestry in the Netherlands category structure to the new categories in an automatic way, for example via a program / bot.

- @JopkeB: This makes sense to me. I see that we have Category:Forestry in North America and Category:Forestry in Africa, so I think Category:Forestry in Europe would be reasonable, but Category:Forestry in unidentified countries also works just fine. - Themightyquill (talk) 11:20, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Themightyquill: Thanks for your comment and suggestions. I used it to figure out what the best category name would be. JopkeB (talk) 11:03, 12 June 2021 (UTC)

Can this category be deleted? I have split it into two, so that allegorical and mythological paintings aren't mixed in one category. The two subcategories can be moved to the parent category Category:Paintings by Frans Floris. Auntof6 (talk) 03:55, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Why not? Cats that have the word "and" in them are generally problematic, IMHO. I support you. --E4024 (talk) 04:21, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

Is Category:Vila Nova de Santo André redundant with Category:Santo André (Santiago do Cacém)? Themightyquill (talk) 12:40, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- "Santo André" is a parish (in portuguese "freguesia"), while "Vila Nova de Santo André" is a town inside (belonging to) that parish. So, they are diferent entities, the categories are not redundant. GualdimG (talk) 07:36, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

Post 1925 volumes of this will need to be carefuly examined, due to the IA publication date metadata issue ( On Ocassion they've use the start date of a publication series as opposed to actual publication date which has confused the semi-automated tools using that metadata to make uploads to Commons I think.) Unneccessary diambiguation page. Category:Aaron Addison Gordon should redirect here, since Category:Aharon David Gordon isn't even spelled the same way. Ytoyoda (talk) 19:42, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose Aharon Gordon is an alternative spelling of Aaron Gordon. The disambiguation is necessary.-- Darwin Ahoy! 19:45, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
- Comment Couple of things:
- The Commons policy is to follow what is easily understandable to most English readers. It's worth noting that on en-wiki, en:Aaron Gordon points to the basketball player and the Zionist philosopher is at en:A. D. Gordon (thanks for moving the Commons cat btw). If either category should supersede the other, it's the basketball player category.
- "Aaron Addison Gordon" is not a COMMONNAME for the basketball. The basketball player category should be at either Category:Aaron Gordon or Category:Aaron Gordon (basketball).
- My preference is to use Category:Aaron Gordon for the basketball player and the disambiguation page move to Category:Aaron Gordon (disambiguation) Ytoyoda (talk) 20:51, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
- We don't need to supersede anything, if there is potential for confusion between the 2 name sin English, as there seems to be, the disambiguation should be kept. Our practice here is different from the one at English Wikipedia. This kind of stuff, for instance: Category:Aaron Gordon (disambiguation) is seldom used here (we generally favour the disambiguation on the terms themselves, since it's much more practical with images).-- Darwin Ahoy! 22:40, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

All of the images appear to be for Category:Interest (emotion) but I'm not sure where we should move this to? Category:Interest (fee)? Or maybe if all the images are simply removed it will be deleted as empty? Crouch, Swale (talk) 10:23, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- OK, I've moved all the content other than Category:Interest rates to the emotion category or another appropriate category but maybe Category:Interest (financial) would be better? Crouch, Swale (talk) 11:00, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- The wikipedia article says it's different than a fee. Category:Interest (payment)? - Themightyquill (talk) 14:30, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- 1. I think this category should become a Disambiguation page, because it has more than one meaning.
- 2. I think Category:Interest (financial) would be a good category name because (financial) interest has two sides: payings (by debtors) and receivings (by creditors), not only payments. And interest is not only about an amount of money to pay/receive, but also about interest rates and doubtless about many more aspects (like interest policy by central banks), still to add.
