Hello, Ecummenic!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thank you for your wonderful work categorizing portraits. I saw it with Schimmelmann. Marvelous! Hi, Ecummenic! Can you give me an advise - as I'm Russian and not native English speaker, I can't choose the right word for this clothing. How would you name the category for this clothing in art? File:Roman Maximovich Volkov - Ivan Krylov.jpg, File:Fedor Petrovich Tolstoy b.jpg and File:RepinMussorgsky.jpg?--Shakko (talk) 10:16, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Silver clothing in art

Not too sure how many of the images you're adding to that category are really valid; File:Metsu viola-de-gamba.jpg seems to be wearing shiny light blue satin, File:Labille-Guiard, Adélaïde - Selfportrait - 1785 - cropped.jpg shiny light green satin, etc. AnonMoos (talk) 16:42, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't blank pages

[edit]

Hi Ecummenic,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed you blanked Category:Charles Emmanuel Leclerq on Commons. I asume you meant for the page to be deleted, but blanking the page is not the right way to do this. I'd like to strongly recommend to use type reason here and add it on top of the page you would like to have deleted; This way it will be placed on a special list that administrators check regulary for deletion. Without this it might take a long time before it's noticed. Thanks again. 19:44, 17 May 2010 (UTC)–Krinkletalk

Hi Ecummenic! Please preserve multi-lingual image descriptions when replacing the Information template by the Painting template. You can use the template LangSwitch for this purpose. -- Greetz Sir Gawain (talk) 06:57, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Having noticed your username so many times, it has encouraged me to write you personally, dear Ecummenic.

I am afraid the portrait in question is attributed to Aleksander Kucharski. A portrait, the sitter of which is identified as Choderlos de Laclos (Versailles, Châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon), was previously attributed to Maurice Quentin de La Tour ‎; it has been attributed to Joseph Ducreux.

There is another version of the same work: Laclos.jpg.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Maria Antonia or Johanna Gabriela?

[edit]

In this edit you claimed that the portrait File:Marie Antoinette by Liotard.jpg actually depicts Johanna Gabriela and not Maria Antonia. Are you sure? In 1762 Liotard painted pastel portraits of all six children, which you can see together here; I think they are, in the reading order, the portraits of: Maria Elisabeth; Karl Joseph; Maria Amalia; Johanna Gabriela; Maria Josepha; and Maria Antonia. What is presumably Liotard's portrait of Johanna Gabriela can be found here.  --Lambiam 19:16, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom

[edit]

Hi Ecummenic, you added to the category Category:Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom. The source simply says it is Princess Beatrice, no more. I suspect there may be some confusion here. The engraver of the image at File:Lacoste, Lesage, La Font - La Princesse de Carizme act1sc2 - césar.jpg is probably François (II) de Poilly (born Paris, 3 May 1671; buried Paris, 17 April 1723), the son of the François (I) de Poilly (born Abbéville, 1622; died Paris, March 1693). There was also François (III) de Poilly (baptised Paris, 8 May 1671 – buried Paris, 9 December 1741), son of Nicolas (I) de Poilly (born Abbéville, 1626; buried Paris, 3 March 1696). It is sometimes not possible to know which man did the engraving, since they probably worked as a family in the same atelier or one nearby. However, in this case, we can certainly eliminate François (I) since he died before the opéra-comique was created. (BTW, the life dates I use are from Bénézit. Other sources have some differences.) --Robert.Allen (talk) 01:30, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Augusta Frederika by Liotard.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. File:Olof von Dalin by Scheffel.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Nested Other date templates

[edit]

Hiya. Please don't do it that way, use Complex date instead. Instead of , the wikitext would be . It gives the same output, but it's less complicated. (FWIW, the documentation for other date mentions that not nesting them is 'preferred'.) Thanks. Revent (talk) 08:17, 23 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Museo del Prado

[edit]

--Zaqarbal (talk) 03:20, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Portrait paintings by year

[edit]

I wanted to thank you for Template:Portraitpaintingcat which fills in all the categories automagically for Category:Portrait paintings by year. I have just taken some time and created all the missing category pages for the 20th and 21st centuries, so we now have category pages for every year from 1490 to 2016. The template made this orders of magnitude easier, leaving me more time to go through the paintings in the decade categories and sort them into their year categories. There are perhaps two dozen or so empty categories, but I hope they'll get filled in now that they exist.

The template creates a category "Year paintings by genre," most of which are red-linked. I looked at a few that had been created but could not find a similar template to Portraitpaintingcat. Would you create a template for that, or direct me to it if it already exists?

Also, there is a category set Category:20th-century portrait paintings by year which someone started but didn't get very far. I think this is somewhat redundant, just making another layer of complexity. What do you think?

Thanks for all your hard work! Laura1822 (talk) 13:08, 13 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to revise my request. Can you teach me how to make these types of templates? Because I have some other categories for which I'd like to do something similar. I have looked at the template code and can't make sense of it. I've looked for documentation for how to create templates like these without much success since I don't know what I'm looking at. Can you point me to a tutorial, or a tutor? Laura1822 (talk) 18:47, 11 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Elisabeth Augusta of Sulzbach, by Edlinger?

Hello Ecummenic,
how do you know that File:Edlinger - Elisabeth Augusta of Sulzbach, Alte Pinakothek.jpg is by Johann Georg Edlinger? I ask because it is not listed at https://www.sammlung.pinakothek.de/en/artist/johann-georg-edlinger. Perhaps they have another creator at sammlung.pinakothek.de. Unfortunately, it's hard to find out as a lot of images are missing there. (6 of the 14 results of [2] lack images.)
Thanks in advance, --Marsupium (talk) 16:55, 13 July 2017 (UTC), 17:02, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you decategorizing portraits from the 1800s? I found at least three where you took them out of 1872 and put them in "1870s portraits" which is down not up. Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I see you did quite a few renames that are completely not in line with this policy like for example the rename of File:Stamaty after van Cleve - Eleanor of Austria.jpg, File:François I with Eleanor, Queen of France.jpg. File:Couder - Louis-François-Armand de Vignerot du Plessis, duc de Richelieu (1696-1788).jpg and many more. From Commons:File_renaming#Which_files_should_not_be_renamed?: "Files should NOT be renamed only because the new name looks a bit better." and "A user repeatedly renaming files under invalid reasons can be stripped of the filemover privilege". I already warned you for this back in 2017, but you never replied. Please explain your actions. Multichill (talk) 22:08, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Given that you never responded and you're still doing renames that are not allowed under our current policy (for example File:Маргарита Гонзага, герцогиня Феррарская.jpg & File:1797 painting of Louis Henri Joseph de Bourbon, last Prince of Condé (1756-1830).jpg), I removed your file move rights. Thanks for uploading File:König - Lady with Mask - Tansey Collection.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thanks for uploading File:Ritratto di dama, ovale.png.

Thank you.

Category discussion warning

Category:Sir_Thomas_Godsalve_and_His_Son_John_(Hans_Holbein_der_Jüngere_-_Gemäldegalerie_Alte_Meister) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Vittoria della Rovere's portraits

[edit]

Hello Ecummenic. I saw that in the last months you uploaded a lot of portraits (sure and presumed) of Vittoria della Rovere. About the last one, the auction house has recently updated its description (and now it's openly recognized as her portrait, if you want to update info on Commons). I saw that of course you usually refer to the attribution proposed by the auction houses or the museums, and then you had your correct "presumed" identification. In the specific case of Vittoria, a long and very detailed article has been published a year ago on the scientific review Atti e Studi - Accademia Raffello. I have the PDF if you want it (but it's in Italian, I don't know your languages). Auction houses are often incorrect (accidentally, or voluntary if they want to sell "better" a painting), while the online museums catalogs are not at all updated. For example most part of the datasheet of the Catalogo Generale dei Beni Culturali have been written by stagiaires between 1980s and 2000s, and even if a lot of portraits (incorrectly identified) have been in the meantime correctly studied by art historians and published in reviews and exhibition catalogs, the datasheet is not updated... (actually I think just because they have to pay people to do it!). But thanks for your work, I'm glad to see that there's someone on Commons to categorize that big mess :) --Kaho Mitsuki (Dis-moi) 08:13, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ecummenic: looking at the history of the category, and at the result now after linking to wikidata, I am convinced this is not the correct image at King George I (1660–1727) wearing Garter robes (Q52146830)? Would you consider adding the correct image? Thanks Lotje (talk) 14:53, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The category needs its own page on wikidata as the other is for the portrait at Belton House in the National Trust Ecummenic (talk) 00:32, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ecummenic, since you uploaded this file, I reach out to you with File:Catalogue of the Ehrich Galleries collection of valuable paintings - by the masters of the classic Italian, Dutch, Flemish, English, Spanish, and French schools (1905) (14777804984).jpg image, with, as per the description given in the file should be Catherine-Marguerite Mignard (Q64873650). Rather confusing now. Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 17:13, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Also this painting now. Lotje (talk) 17:27, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's not clear who is represented in these portraits, but it appears that [3], [4] and [5] are portraits of at least two different women, and it is unlikely that the sitter is Catherine Mignard as they bear little resemblance to a portrait of her located in the palace of Versailles [6] Ecummenic (talk) 08:50, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Ecummenic, in the meantime I correcte some spelling mistakes. there must have been a reason why a trustworthy Ehrich Galleries (Q105698482) mentions this. I'll leave it as it is and try to find more information. Have a nice day. Lotje (talk) 10:17, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Back in town :-) On page 62 of this book, there is another painting by Pierre Mignard with a portrait of Catherine-Marguerite Mignard. Looks like the sitter has many faces. Cheers Lotje (talk) 11:40, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Forgot to mention: Mignard. — Catherine Mignard, Comtesse de Feuquières Lotje (talk) 11:41, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Giacomo Antonio Curlando

[edit]

hi @Ecummenic

could you upload this painting please??

I can't try because I don't have such precise frame cropping programs as you have Volvos12 (talk) 19:45, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Ambito" ?

[edit]

When you used the word "ambito" here, I'm reasonably confident you meant "circle", as in "someone from the artist's general social circle" (which is one of the valid parameters of template:Creator). Can you confirm that? DS (talk) 15:03, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Ambito" is the term used on the website where the image came from (no longer visible today), as I was not sure if it was the equivalent of "circle" or "follower", I put the word used by the seller. Ecummenic (talk) 00:52, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ecummenic, since you created the category, I was wondering if you could adapt the spelling: there is a d missing in the word Goddess. Thank you so much for your time. Lotje (talk) 15:07, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, that's right, thanks for letting me know. Ecummenic (talk) 18:19, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ecummenic, since you created this category, I am a bit puzzled here because of John Condé (Q6226844) Pierre Conde (Q18674354). Thank you so much for your time. Lotje (talk) 05:47, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Only me again, there is also a Pierre Conde (Q109482469) :-) Lotje (talk) 05:56, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Jean and Pierre are brothers, but wikidata editors have placed Jean's data in Pierre's file. Jean, engraver, was born around the year 1765 and died in 1794; his brother Pierre, engraver, miniaturist and publisher, was born around 1767 and died in 1840 [7] [8]. Pierre Conde and Peter Conde are the same person so both wikidata pages should be merged. Ecummenic (talk) 06:16, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Y're a star, thank you so much for clarifying this Ecummenic. Much obliged. Lotje (talk) 06:29, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikidata items are merged, but surely not all the images in the Category:Peter Condé are correct. Cheers. Lotje (talk) 06:37, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your change to this file

[edit]

Hi, Ecummenic. This change you made added incorrect categories. That painting shows Catherine of Alexandria, not Catherine of Siena. You can see that on the museum's website. For future reference, Catherine of Siena is usually shown as a nun. Catherine of Alexandria is usually shown as a younger woman, more like the one in this painting. I've fixed the categories on this file. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. -- Auntof6 (talk) 05:24, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Ecummenic. I'm not sure I understand why this file needs to contain categories that are already on the category for the painting. I don't understand what you mean by "For diffusion it's necessary that the main image contains all categories." Would you mind explaining? I make that kind of change often, so if there's a reason not to I'd like to understand it. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 06:30, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, when all the images of a given work of art are placed within a very specific category, access to them is complicated, both for visitors and for editors. Specific categories avoid the saturation of images in the general categories, but the works also disappear from the general view. Ecummenic (talk) 06:52, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If the works need to be in a general view, a gallery is the way to do that. An image of a painting like this one does not need to be in the same categories as the main category for the painting per COM:OVERCAT. I'm going to remove those categories again; please do not put them back. -- Auntof6 (talk) 07:03, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A gallery is something useless, no one sees them anymore, except the one who edited them. Ecummenic (talk) 20:25, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Category discussion warning

Portrait paintings by year has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed.

Thank you!
