File deletion request, potential user problem

Let me write this here, because there may be different actions necessary. I feel quite uncomfortable with the latest reactions of User:Cicconorsk in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Clouds Atlas2.png, despite not being the (main) target (Pinging @JoKalliauer). Note especially the intentional switch to Italian in latest answer. On the other hand he may be right in the actual facts. Are here administrators using Photoshop? (But in GIMP I can use brushes created from images, too, so the underlying problem should not be specific.) I do not know in the moment, whether it’s the oldest deletion request, but could, possibly, someone decide about this? @Speravir: I might missunderstood User:Cicconorsk. I think they might created it with Photoshop brushes, inspired by real photos, not shure if Commons:Derivative works applies. In w:de:Wikipedia:Grafikwerkstatt#Wolkenatlas - User:Markus Bärlocher said it might be below the COM:TOO, because it uses generalized images of clouds. @Cicconorsk: I would like to keep the image as very useful image, but if it is illegal it has to get deleted. @Speravir: I ignored the personal attack, I prefer to spend my time on more useful work. Also I'm contributing with my real name, I personally don't care about this attack very much. Personal attacks often tells more about offender than of the victim. It is known that (for an admin) I'm not an expert in licenses. Also their comment might be against the community and not against a concrete person, such personal attacks should imho not be accepted. I recommend to remove the italian comment and warn the user, but not blocking. Concerning images from User:Raymond

The files say all of these are the work of Raymond and were taken in the 1980s and are all pretty creepy shots of random women on the street and theres no way to confirm if these were taken with consent or not. Theyre all not used a lot cross wiki so I would like it if they were deleted and maybe something could be done about Raymonds roles since this is pretty concerning 2600:6C64:4F3F:D66A:89EE:DCAD:43F2:9E73 00:05, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

I never refused to delete them neither suggested they're OK, in fact quite I'm neutral about that topic, my comment was just about the way they were deleted: kept two times and then speedy deleted the first and same day after a simple request made by an IP. Deletion request

Hello, everyone. Some months earlier, I requested the deletion of a user talk page that was made by a sockpuppet to target me: User talk:Nitinmlk gay gand marwana tampu kuti da bacha. For the previous discussion, please see here. As I have already noted, most part of this username is in transliterated Punjabi language and it literally means "Nitinmlk gay sodomite son of bitch". It was declined at that point in time and the reasoning seemed appropriate to me. But whenever I search my user talk page at this project the abusive user talk page appears as one of the plausible search results. Commons:Requested updates to protected images

Would any admins be able to clear up the backlog at Commons:Requested updates to protected images? Some fulfilled/rejected requests have not yet been archived, while others have been hanging in limbo since 2019. There are also duplicate requests for updates to a same but unprotected file at the top for some reason. Seloloving (talk) 03:45, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

I always thought we use {{Edit request}} for this, which places images into Category:Commons protected edit requests. I'm not sure why we have a separate request page. --Schlurcher (talk) 18:15, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

Requesting a new tag for ImageAnnotator edits

Please revert arbitrary rename

    • Hi, @GreenMeansGo: @E4024: ǃ I've changed the name of the category because, in spite of being known as "Gurcu Hatun", this only means "Georgian lady" in Turkish, and it's not a proper name. However, I respected the sources and kept this adopted name on her category, beside her true name, Tamar. Hence "Tamar of Georgia (Gurcu Hatun)", similar to some of the 18th-19th century Russian tsarinas, whose category have both their names (the original and the adopted one). Urgent help request

I need help urgently. A1Cafel has made deletion requests on over 500 images I uploaded in one day. I had already stated in the vandalism message that I consider such behavior as a project disruption, since this way no improvement for Commons/Wikipedia is created. That there is no copyright infringement can be seen from the image alone when there are several files. These include government insignia, the coat of arms of an autonomous region, and posters with government notices about Corona. As government publications, they fall under PD TL gov. Most of the files are criticized for not having a URL to the original source. I am willing to dig out those URLs, but it takes time. Some images are more than three years old. I have already worked through over 100 files, but instead of the deletion threat being lifted on those files, files have now been deleted that I haven't had a chance to take care of yet. I also have a real life and my involvement for over 16 years in the German Wikipedia is also not insignificant. Nevertheless, one can clearly see a progress in the processing; so my good will and that the source information to the files are correct.

Therefore I would like to ask that:

  1. the files are not deleted until each one is checked by me. Any deletion destroys the inclusion in the articles, which cannot be easily restored, as these bot edits disappear.
  2. the deleted files are restored. This is the only way I can know which images I need to find the URL for.

A few images I got directly from photographers and asked them to send a mail to permission@commons. Unfortunately Timorese often take their time with this. I'll write to the respective photographers when I'm working on the files.

50 % of the images are having now the source URL. I need to see the deleted files to know, which photos they was. For example File:2020 Statement of president Francisco Guterres 1.jpg and File:2020 Statement of president Francisco Guterres 2.jpg are having now its URL. Let us do it step by step. First, we need to have the deletion requests for the files which have sources closed. Then please add sources to the files which have all not been deleted. Behaviour of User:A1Cafel (formerly B dash)

Even if all the files were "strictly unsourced", such mass nomination is not productive for the project. Instead, questions could be raised and communicated to the uploaders, so they could try to fix the problems. And when communication does not resolve the problems, the problems should be raised on AN or VP to get some preliminary consensus to how best to handle them. In any case such mass nomination of potentially reliable contribs from established users is a waste of other users' time.

Actually the uploader has the responsibility to state clearly the source of the image, and even it is being tagged, you still have a week to fix them. Not making too many tags doesn't mean not making any tags. Files with no source is a reason of being tagged. I do continue tagging, just reduce the number of tagging each time. You can see there are other editors warned users who have copyvio like Special:Diff/531228483 and Special:Diff/540003537. I don't think this is threat. A1Cafel used to be B dash?! Immediate block then. They were a damned nuisance in exactly the same way before they disappeared. In particular, they kept nominating (and still keep nominating) files under the basis of "small file with no EXIF", neither of which are valid nomination reasons.

Transwiki Geography from English Wikisource

Could someone transwiki import s:Geography from English Wikisource to Geography (Ptolemy) (companion category is at Category:Geography (Ptolemy), and Geography is a redirect to the general category). The page is out of scope for Wikisource (it contains no text), but a deletion discussion suggested it was within scope as a gallery on Commons and should be transwikied (as an alternative to deletion). The page has multiple revisions and has existed since 2015 so I don't want to cut&paste it. --Xover (talk) 00:26, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

Meh. The MW support for transwiki imports is so half-hearted that I sometimes wonder why they even bother. In any case, thanks for looking into it. I wanted to preserve the revision history for general attribution etc., not for copyright or licensing reasons (the expression there is indeed trivial), but since an on-wiki RFC and Phab #Site-request to add s: to wgImportSources seems a little excessive for one page I've cut&paste moved it. I've done minimal cleanup (templates, categories, linked it from WD), but someone with a better feel for any style guide for gallery pages will have to do further polish (or propose deletion if it doesn't meet the bar). --Xover (talk) 10:30, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

Hmm. May or may not be related, but I've been struggling getting successfully uploaded for a couple of days now. This could be (and I still assume it is) an issue that's somehow specific to this particular file, but it does keep appearing in my stash until I manually remove it. @Koavf: Have you tried using MediaWiki:EnhancedStash.js to publish it? Updating of "births" Categories

Can you please look into whether the "births" Categories are updating automatically as intended. There are a couple in particular that I have noticed as still showing old data several days after having made a change to a related/feeding article. At the bottom it correctly shows as belonging to "1752 births", but when you go to that category and look in the 'F' section, it does not appear. Could someone resolve this deletion request? It's pretty clear-cut case, and I probably should've marked it for quick deletion instead. Redirection deletion from "unidentified"

Hi,

Père Igor asked for the deletion of two redirects for previously unidentified plants: File:Plante inconnue Bourg d'Oueil bord D51.jpg and File:Plante inconnue Bourg d'Oueil bord D51 (1).jpg (on DRs which is not the most appropriate way to do it, a speedydelete would have been better).

Rubin16 refused the deletion on Commons:Deletion requests/File:Plante inconnue Bourg d'Oueil bord D51.jpg and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Plante inconnue Bourg d'Oueil bord D51 (1).jpg based on Commons:File_renaming#Leaving_redirects.

My understanding is that such deletions are usually accepted (based on the point G2 of Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion?). But this is unclear and these two policies are a bit inconsistent.

What do you think?

I wouldn't delete those either. With files that old, it is certainly not outside the realm of possibility that someone linked to those files from another website. Redirects are cheap, so it's better to leave them and not risk breaking attribution for another site. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 00:08, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
@AntiCompositeNumber: good point (even if nothing is « outside the realm of possibility » Clin) but this file has been seen 28 times total in the last 6 years, and 18 times if you exclude the edits (ref), the possibility seems very slim here.
My question is more general than this particular files (shown here as examples), over the years I have deleted many redirections of unidentified plants. Before Rubin16 refused this deletion, I could have swear this is normal and regular on Commons. Plus Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion seems to confirm this, should we update this policy?

I don't agree with the rationale for the deletion and we were never given the chance to review the rationale provided for the deletion- the word 'poetry' is only seen in the deletion statement but is not seen anywhere else in the discussion about deletion. I would like to reverse this sudden deletion on the basis that the deletion rationale was not talked about before hand- I'm sure I can find examples on Wikimedia Commons similar to that image that aren't being deleted that would fall within the 'poetry' example. It was sudden because it happened without any feedback on the basis that was used for the deletion. It was so shocking that I thought it needed to be handled here instead of handled by the person who did the deletion. If I had been allowed to respond or raise a defense to the basis used for deletion, I would have. Instead, a new basis was suddenly raised and then immediately used to delete the image. "You already made your opinion there so are you just disputing that the admin disagreed with your claim that "short text is uncopyrightable"?" I gave my opinion about the opinions that had been raised so far, but a new basis for deletion was suddenly raised without any attempt to get back to me. If an image is nominated for deletion, then every aspect should be considered. Quite often the image is deleted due to other reason than in nomination. That case these new reasons are not discussed. During last week I closed such requests:

  • this: nominated due to missing educational value, deleted as derivative work
  • this: nominated as own work, deleted as somebody other's copyright violation
  • this: nominated as copyvio, deleted as out of scope
  • this: nominated as out of scope, deleted as copyvio

Eeeh. Deleted per uploader request. They requested it on the seventh day, and not really their fault they didn't apply the proper template. So it is kindof effectively a G7, just not exactly a properly formatted one that got stale because no one got around to it for a while. If anyone takes issue with that interpretation, feel free to ping me and I'll undelete. No need to go through UDR. Just giving the uploader the benefit of the doubt as a courtesy we normally extend. Mass replacement of 100+ times used pic by significantly better version

I initiated a significant rework of the original file File:Boris Vian - WIKI.jpg in the 'Fotowerkstatt' (the local Photoshop ;-)) of the German Wikipedia today. The original pic is kind of blueish and Boris Vian has a somewhat unhealthy appearance thereon, which seems mainly due to bad lighting conditions as it is a picture made in a photo booth for IDs long ago. The resulting retouched pic File:Boris Vian - WIKI retouched.jpg is better in a number of aspects. It was inserted in the de- and en-WPs today. I then realized that a Commons-tool lists more than 100 global usages of the original. Would it be possible to make a mass replacement via script/batch mode? I doubt that anyone would complain afterwards, and if someone insists on the older worse pic, he could still revert manually in his language. Pittigrilli (talk) 00:21, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

Trophy soccers reloaded after deletion.

I have been working for a long time to eliminate potential copyvios of football (soccer) competition trophies.

Well, normally the design of the trophies is protected and Commons has become a den of svg images that showcase the designs. All the eliminations I suggested have been met! However, there is a group of users who always reload... completely ignoring the administrative decision.

For example, in November Polarlys eliminated a package of copyvios that were reloaded by RicardoSilvaRDM in February. Still, I consider the parameters to be completely distorted! The files claim that Conmebol is the author, and that everyone is under a CC license, but indicates an entire site protected by copyright.

I would like administrators to observe a certain case, because it is unacceptable to be the third time that files are reloaded after deletion. Be given a positioning of the administrative body, the analysis and the opinion of the body so that I or anyone else does not waste any more time. The mysterious deletion of John Schanlaub's flickr images

John Schanlaub - a very fine photographer - has been an occasional contributor here. He was also a very prolific flickr contributor, and something like 700(?) flickr images he took were uploaded by commons contributors over the course of many years.

I request an administrator look at the revision history of some of the images he blanked or otherwise vandalized, or left notes requestion deletion that do not meet the criteria laid out at Commons:Courtesy deletions. Those edits where he blanked or vandalized image pages, or made deletion requests that did not meet our criteria, were made around April 7, 2011.

I uploaded one of his images, and left him a friendly note, telling him I thought it was a fine image, thanking him for using a license that allowed re-use, and telling him I had uploaded the image to the Wikimedia commons.

I'd never have predicted his response. He tried clawing back the rights he released with the free license.

His attempts to delete the free flickr images uploaded by other commons contributors? Vandalism, like his He blanked some images, examples: [3], [4], [5]

At Commons:Deletion requests/File:X14.jpg I wrote that something like 99 of his flickr images had been uploaded here. But I have a very strong memory that, when I checked more closely it was more than 700 images.

The mystery is that only 13 of those images that were originally on flickr are still here... Category:Files from John Schaunlaub Flickr stream

Courtesy deletion is not a right. @Andy Dingley, Jujutacular, Courcelles, Tm, Sv1xv, and Huntster: and I all thought he had not made a good argument for courtesy deletion.

Further, while there may be administrators who think they can delete material, as a courtesy, based on their sole judgement, but I believe they are mistaken. Commons:Courtesy deletions#Period of grace explicitly says that, after the grace period (currently 7 days) courtesy deletion requires a discussion in a deletion request.

John Schanlaub didn't initiate any formal deletion request for those images, so how did hundreds of his images end up getting deleted?

When the deletion discussion closed as keep he removed his ten thousands of flickr images, and used his flickr profile into a rant against the Wikimedia commons, calling us some ugly names, and attacking our characters.

So, as above, could an administrator look at the images he edited on April 7, 2011, that ended up being deleted? How did they come to be deleted? Question about reverts by User:AntiCompositeNumber

AntiCompositeNumber has just reversed my edits on [[6]] and several other volumes where I was replacing a non-standard template with a standard book template. The non-standard template created import problems on Wikisource and had a Volume fields that went against the documentation on {{Book}}. I'm asking for a review of these reverts. The two crucial questions are 1) Should non-standard templates be preferred over standard templates? 2) Should the fields of templates based on {{Book}} follow the documentation of {{Book}}? @Languageseeker: I think the problem is that by replacing the non-standard template you left the file without a license and User:AntiCompositeNumber monitor files where the license is removed. Files without a license are tagged by a bot and will usually be deleted after 7 days unless someone fix it. No Commons policy requires this person to merge their accounts. They are able to run legitimate multiple accounts if they wish and understand that they cannot misuse them, such as gaming the system during discussions or votes. This person added a statement on File:Steven Crowder Change My Mind meme.jpg saying the 2020 presidential election isn't about Democrat vs Republicans, but Freedom vs Socialism. She also added it outside the infoboxes.

That is not what the image was about and Julia clearly decided to add her statement since "male privilege doesn't exist" as the person in the image claimed, is one of the viewpoints of some of the far-right elements.

This was a clear attempt by Julia to push her political narrative against the left. It has been months since she added it and she hasn't made any edits after that. Please can we install the FormWizard gadget on Commons

Please can we have FormWizard installed on Commons? Its a WMF maintained gadget already installed on several Wikimedia projects including English and Norwegian Wikipedia, Wikidata and Meta. I'd like to use it for documentation I'm working on for Structured Data on Commons and I'm sure it could be used to simplify some processes using templates.

I asked on Phabricator and was told that its an admin function.

It starts again.

Ellin Beltz asked User:A1Cafel not to make mass deletion requests anymore, after he put 505 deletion requests on files, I had loaded up, didn't realized they would need a URL for the source. As I promised, I added to all files the url, which took several weeks. Just one image was not able to recover the url, maybe it was deleted at the original source. Until now, most of these deletion requests were not re-checked by admins. Checking my old uploads is on my to-do-list. As there is a current desaster event in Timor-Leste, it has not priority No. 1.

Although there is an admin's order, A1Cafel set again deletion requests on 52 of files, I have uploaded in older time. Needless requests, as there is no CRV and the problem is known. It would be enough, to inform me, there are further files, the threat of deletion is not needed.

This way, even only the contradiction to→ the deletion requests steals edit time and later time of the admins. That all for no benefit for the project. I think there has to be a clear decision. I have proven that the deletion requests are groundless. I offer to find out the URL of all my files that are pointed out to me. A simple message on my discussion page is sufficient. I suggest to make a topic ban for User:A1Cafel on all activities relating to deletion of files with no-source, no-permission or DR for 1 month. Even if edits are made in good faith it causes a lot of frustration and work for admins. I agree with MGA73. The proposal seems a useful way of preventing additional situations of this type with this user for one month. I really wonder about the number of admin hours spentwasted on efforts like this, when simple courtesy and cooperation would have resulted in the same eventual situation: All would have been sourced and any with serious issues correctly nominated. I understand "enthusiasm," but it's probably best to not make a big pile of work for the admins unless you have a great burning desire to be far better known that you probably desire to be. For the mass tagging, IMO fixing 50 files per day is not a harsh job (On average 7 files per day). I don't think I violate my promise to Ellin Beltz (Not making too much taggings doesn't mean not making any taggings), and @MGA73: I have talked to him, sadly he ignores it and considers this as a threat (At Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive 84#Urgent help request: there are still some files are not properly sourced before 4 March 2020. Well. If you look at Special:Diff/536169239 the source says "Facebook-Auftritt des Staatspräsidenten Osttimors" and there was a date 20 February 2020. So I would say that it would be possible to find the photo. You just had to find the facebook page of "Presidência da República Democrática de Timor-Leste" and go to the right date.

I think that the uploader @J. Patrick Fischer: has clearly stated he knows images need to be fixed. MGA73, Jeff G. added to the discussion. I think A1Cafel is being unnecessarily speedy and uncompromising. I think the project is not advanced by blind and instant adherence to rules as in "I was only following my interpretation of what I think this one rule means out of context and without considering all the other project rules and guidelines." I know I am tired of hundreds of files getting dumped in Speedy when a simple conversation with the uploader - and giving uploader time to come into compliance - is part of COM:AGF. I know it's making more work for admins and I know that cranky admins may/could/can/might decide it is disruptive to the project if the behavior continues. As far as "no problem to fix 50 images" then it is to the uploader who has already said "in progress." Speedying the images anyway after acknowledgement by uploader is didactic and rude. I don't care about acronyms in edit summaries, I very much care that our administrators are already overloaded with real work, and don't need (plain speech warning) any more administrator time-wasting projects tacked on to the regular tasks for no good reason - apparently now accompanied by Drama. I do not take kindly to the explicit threat above to continue wasting administrator time by not listening to the various administrators making so far polite requests and my prior warnings. This message is very clear, its a warning is to cease and desist from your current course of action, immediately. I will not warn again if this continues. Un-heed at Own Risk. Wrong deletions

Hi. I uploaded some images of politicians. When I uploaded them, I made a mistake about license and other informations, but then I corrected license and further informations, for each file. I corrected them by myself. Later, @Elcobbola: deleted all files I had uploaded, writing on my talk page I'd be guilty of "copyright violations" (Revision #552195586). But when Elcobbola deleted those files and wrote on my talk page, licences and other informations had been corrected by me for half an hour. I indicated a correct license ({{dati.camera.it}}). You can verify my corrections seeing the "history" of each file. So, there is not any copyright violation: licenses and informations had been corrected by myself, before that massive deletion. Elcobbola was very speedy to delete these files, he deleted them before asking something to me, but he doesn't seem so speedy to answer me, and I'd like working and using these files now. You sourced these files directly to profile pages on legislature.camera.it which contain no mention whatsoever of copyright. Per COM:EVID, "In all cases, the burden of proof lies on the uploader [...] to demonstrate that as far as can reasonably be determined: the file is in the public domain or is properly licensed" (underline added) and per COM:L descriptions should "contain information sufficient for others to verify the license status". Notwithstanding that you falsely claimed these to be your own work at upload (!!!), you failed to provide appropriate sourcing/evidence. Indeed, the main www.camera.it site has the notice "Camera dei deputati 2015-2020 © Tutti i diritti riservati" ("Chamber of Deputies 2015-2020 © All rights reserved"). The license at dati.camera.it, which you seek to apply, applies to data and there is no evidence on offer here that the legislative images are considered data, let alone a reconciliation of the contradictory notice at legislature.camera.it. At best this is a COM:PRP issue. (On the issue of speed: You asked me about this at 19:57, 12 April 2021‎, more than 1,5 hours after my last edit that day; you are not owed an immediate response.) Files I uploaded are the same type of those included in that category. But deletions of files uploaded by me (the same type of the other thousands of files, with the same license) is not a correct choise. Admininstators are allowed to speedily delete copyright violations, which these are. We don't, and they aren't. Dati.camera.it itself says it is "a platform for publishing and sharing Linked Open Data on the activities and organs of the Chamber." The data to which it is referring are the datasets here and do not include images on the separate legislature.camera.it domain. There are hundreds and hundreds of images whose source is "legislature.camera.it" and not "dati.camera.it", but there is {{Dati.camera.it}} as license. They haven't been deleted in speedy deletion. On the countrary, consider, for example, File:Renzo Pigni 1963.jpg and the license rewiev Revision #390063400 made by a license reviewer: the source is "legislature.camera.it" (not "dati.camera.it"), and the license was {{Dati.camera.it}}. Overwritten file

A file of my own upload, File:Güllaç with pomegranate.jpg has been overwritten with a copyvio file, and as someone else rightly reverted it, now my file appears on their upload list. While not being Picasso or Kahlo, and not painting but only taking simple photographs with my simple cellphones, my "works of art" are dear to me and I want them to appear here only on my list of uploads. I was going to open a DR for deletion of the recent two versions but the last time I opened a DR for deletion of versions I was almost being lynched. The COM:CAT policy does not state that English names have to be used. It states that names are generally in English. As proper names are an exception, exceptions for location names may also be reasonable. @ you're right, Category names should generally be in English but also However, there are exceptions such as some proper names, biological taxa and names for which the non-English name is most commonly used in the English language (or there is no evidence of usage of an English-language version). If there's an established exonim in English must be used that one. I live in Rome, Italy, and I never would change the category name in "Roma" just because that's the name of the city in Italian :-) -- Blackcat (write me here) 23:35, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
What happens here is that this line is Spanish, built by Portuguese entrepreneurs, so he wanted it to be named in Portuguese, despite being in Spain. Then, he changed the name to have the two languagues, Spanish and Portuguese, which make the name so long and with problems in certains sites because of the "/". This is a case in which it is better to name in English. Besides, the names he chooses for each language are not the most correct one. You can see that are not the chosen ones in each Wikipedia. He was advised again those names. He also creates other incorrect names redirecting to the main category. Some of them appear in certain references, but they are rare and create confusion. They are not recommended. Others are just random. I please ask someone to remove Category:Línea Barca d’Alva-La Fuente de San Esteban\Linha Internacional de Barca d’Alva a La Fregeneda e a Salamanca to Category:Railway line between Barca d'Alva and La Fuente de San Esteban and delete all the categories redirecting to it. Even if they would be correct, this is neither the place nor the way to register these names. I have reviewed and nominated for deletion a batch of these files here : the photographer has put a copyright claim in the EXIF data but the files have been released with a PD-mark by somebody else. I see now there are over 13,000 files in the same situation in Category:Photos from Parlamentul Republicii Moldova Flickr stream. Removing attempts to upload broken svg from file history

Request to delete and lock

Hi. Please delete the redirect File:Burj Al Arab.jpg. The current file that used this name until the successful rename request is now at its different name, and I have replaced the instance of the link at User:OgreBot/Uploads by new users/2018 September 05 04:30 to point to the current name. The usage at another OrgeBot listing refers to a different file (probably one of those deleted). This is to give way for the deleted files under this name (for contingency, if UAE laws will be amended in the distant future). But for now, to prevent similar incident (either unintended or intentional overwriting), please lock (w:WP:SALT) the file name until an undefined point of time in the future. I don't know that Maudslay II is uploading fake picture deliberately, as some of these pictures are widely circulated on the internet, allegedly from the Deir Yassin massacre. But the thing is, (as anyone who is familiar with the Deir Yassin massacre knows (& I have been editing en:Deir Yassin massacre since 2006)): all the pictures taken after the Deir Yassin massacre are still being censored by Israel.   • This is yet another bulk deletion from A1Cafel with the rationale "Small image without EXIF, unlikely to be own work". This is neither true (the images are >800px wide and have some EXIF), a valid rationale for deletion on either count, and they are also a breach of AGF in that it implies deceit on the part of the uploader with no evidence to support that.
A1Cafel's edits here are almost all of the same form, trying to find any content here which they can push for deletion, and ideally to irritate, inconvenience and ideally have blocked as many uploaders as possible. These bogus deletions are becoming a time-sink for other editors too in having to refute them. See:
"Small image without EXIF" is no policy-based reason for deletion. Nominations should not be made on this basis, although a handful of prolific editors (four or five that I've seen) are using this to great effect. A1Cafel has had this pointed out to them repeatedly. A strange case of a strongly modified, but non-so declared derivative work (?) of a famous historic painting

I did some work on an 1898 painting of French artist category:Édouard Debat-Ponsan, which can be found in a definitely authentic version here: File:La Vérité sortant du puits.jpg and here: File:La Vérité sortant du Puits, E. Debat-Ponsan, 1898, Musée Hôtel Morin (retouched).jpg. In that process, I stumbled upon a strange version of the image with completely different colours, this one: File:Truth Leaving the Well.gif. The latter has a poor resolution of about 500 x 300 pix, is a gif, and has completely different colours than the two above. The uploader did his last contribution in 2008. The bad thing: The complete file desc seems to stem from the original unmodified file, up to the copyright notice that this is allegedly a "faithful photographic reproduction" of the original artwork. The last item is really bad, as a great number of Wikipedians seem to have relied on this and integrated it in articles, in the English WP even in the article about the painter himself... I can not positively state that the work is not a 'modified colours' version from the original artist, however, to me everything indicates that the strongly modified colour version was made by the uploader (or some unknown person). I am not sure what to do... If we know that it is not from the original artist, one would have to declare the author/copyright info as missing. Any advice/ideas? The GIF is poor quality but intended to be a faithful reproduction of the picture. The simple thing to do is replace the GIF with File:La Vérité sortant du puits.jpg in all the articles that use it. That gives those articles a better quality image. The GIF need not be replaced in QotD. The 2007 GIF predates the other files.
Although allegedly derived from the first JPEG, File:La Vérité sortant du Puits, E. Debat-Ponsan, 1898, Musée Hôtel Morin (retouched).jpg has more of the border image, a frame, and EXIF data, so it is probably a separate photograph (original date in EXIF also does not align). That implies the source data is wrong. It has some improvement over the first JPEG. The barrel distortion on the iron work is gone. Overall, the whole image is faded and/or reduced in contrast. It is not used on many sites.

Thanks. I will thus replace the GIF by File:La Vérité sortant du puits.jpg. As the GIF is extremely deviating in terms of used colours from the original, I will also modify the description so that it becomes clear from the first line that it is a derivative work and was altered significantly and that is not 'the painting', let alone a 'faithful photographic reproduction'. The strange colors are likely unintentional and caused by a maximum of 256 colors in gifs and choice of a poor translation algorithm from the original image to the gif file. It might be an option to create a new highres gif from one of the highres ipgs with better color transcoding and upload it as a version of the gif file (this would affect external uses of the file) and still change the description and name of the file. --C.Suthorn (talk) 08:12, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Edit warring, censorship, acts of humiliation by users Kazimier Lachnovič and Лобачев Владимир

Hello, I have encountered edit warring in files Algierd. Альгерд (1366, 1930).jpg (edit warring examples: 1, 2) and Lob Печать Ольгерда.svg (edit warring examples: 3, 4) as some users attempts to censor completely accurate statements made by the Lithuanian Institute of History that this seal is a falsification made by Marian Gumowski, who modified the 1388 Seal of David of Gorodets (David Dmitrovich), husband of Jogaila's sister Maria, which was published by Franciszek Piekosiński because the original (similar also with word Olger) ducal seal of Algirdas was not preserved in a visual form and its descriptions survived only in texts which does not allow to recreate authentic look of this seal (source: report of the Lithuanian Institute of History of 2012, page 4). Consequently, no valid sources uses this seal because of this, except for some in Belarus which also attempts to prove that the Republic of Lithuania is derived from the Duchy of Samogitia (an original research of the unrecognized Litvinism theorists). The Lithuanian and other countries scientists would accept this seal with an open-arms if it was authentic because we have no surviving seals of Algirdas, but it is not possible as it is a clear falsification, created in the 19th century.
Such actions of User:Kazimier Lachnovič and User:Лобачев Владимир undoubtedly violates the Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not censored and Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not a battleground rules. Both of these users are well known for edit warring and humiliation of other Wikipedians, therefore I believe that the time has finally come to take sanctions against them because they will surely fight and humiliate others, who does not agree with their opinion and theories, in the future as well (e.g. lexicon examples of Kazimier Lachnovič who called other Wikipedians, who did not agreed with his theories, as chauvinistic rubbish: 5, 6, 7). Article Pahonia was locked twice in the same month by administrator User:El C, who warned that the next edit war will result in sanctions and it was directed to user Лобачев Владимир. It was also proved by @Ymblanter: that user Kazimier Lachnovič used word Nazi/Nazism (8, 9) to refer to other Wikipedians as well.
Please finally take actions against both of these users because they sliped off every time with warnings until now and later (soon, after a few days) starts yet another edit wars and acts of humiliation.  Comment by the nominator: It was not my point of view, but a point of view of an unquestionable scientific institution – the Lithuanian Institute of History after in depth analysis. As I already said, this institution has absolutely no aims to discreditate such valuable seal (if it was authentic). With all due respect, I will not participate in flooding this discussion like it was recently when both of these users flooded another report to the Administrators' noticeboard (THIS REPORT) and slipped off with nothing, despite clearly violating the rules of Wikipedia. The previous report was sunk with unrelated spam and administrators left it without a clear decision, despite undoubtful violations of the rules and statement by one of the administrators (El_C) that "Anyway, I'll give you a day or so to respond, but at the moment, I'm leaning toward sanctions of some sort, up to and including an indefinite block". It is clear that such action encouraged them to continue edit warring and feeling as untouchable. I will leave it to the administrators this time as I presented a clear evidence in a short paragraph.
Belarus was conquered by the Lithuanian rulers (check article at the Encyclopedia Britannica), therefore it was a colony - one may like it or not, but that is the truth and my words were not humiliating, unlike those of Kazimier Lachnovič when he called Lithuanians as chauvinistic rubbish (by the way, he was absolutely the first one to use such lexicon). Statement that Belarus is not a completely sovereign state is based on the Union State and it is not a humiliation, but a fact as well. Both of these users closely collaborates by participating in edit wars and defending their point of view which is mostly based not on the international sources and actively fights others, who does not agree with them. The finest example is the edit wars at the article of Pahonia which was first began by Kazimier Lachnovič and later was continued by Лобачев Владимир (CHECK HERE edits from 4 April 2021 to 23 April 2021). I opened a deletion request because I understand that the files fall under derivations of protected works. However, the account Victoralves12 (talk · contribs) simply moved the elimination discussion to a restoration discussion, with no plausible justification (if possible).

The editor could discuss on the page itself, but he preferred to subvert the merit of my nomination for elimination. He still left reverting the tags in the files. Replacing the .svg of the Portuguese Flag - Colors

Hello,

The file of the Portuguese Flag https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Portugal.svg has long featured RGB colors that don't represent well the Portuguese Flag. The origin of the error came from the official Presidency of the Portuguese Republic website, because the person responsible did not translate well the cymk and Pantone tones to equivalent sRGB numbers. That being said, until recently it was difficult to argue for a replacement of the wikipedia .svg since the original was given by the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic department.

Now that the file was replaced in the official website of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic ( https://www.presidencia.pt/media/povd31yj/bandeiranacional.svg see also: https://www.presidencia.pt/presidente-da-republica/a-presidencia/simbolos-nacionais/bandeira-nacional/ ) I am asking for someone with the right privileges to replace the current Wikipedia .svg with a new one that has the "better" colors. The file of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic website has currently 680x453px which needs to be resized to 600x400px for a seamless replacement on Wikipedia.

  • Guy, I’m the one who chose both the RGB and the CMYK numbers in that document and that was good enough for all the fussy experts on Design, Vexillology, Heraldry, and State Protocol Sampaio’s Casa Civil could hurl at it, including bigwigs from both the CHAAP and all three banches of the Armed Forces, incl. Gabinete de Heráldica do Exército. What do you have for us now? Replace it with some Web Colors 101 hackjob who could not even get the 3:2 proportions of the flag cloth straight?
For the record, all the while Vítor Luís and I were working on the matter, we considered only RGB values (decided as  #FF0000  and  #006600 ) for we were working primarily on (and for) screen. Later (already after we were hired by the Presidency to fix the matter, on the aftermath of the early 2004 Ronaldo’s pagoda flag “scandal” and the weird Multibanco ad image), based on those and on analysis of some reference material (Columbano’s 1911 booklet and reference cloth as used by the Portuguese Navy) we decided on the given PMS values (485 CVC and 349 CVC). Only at the very end and as an afterthought a CMYK equivalence (0-100-100-0 and 100-35-100-30) was agreed upon and added to the document (and against my wishes — on technical grounds, just like the creation of a JPEG version): Back in 2004 and indeed nowadays more so, there is little use for interacting directly with CMYK, even when working towards four-color hardcopy, as automated conversion works usually much better.
So, even if a simplistic and arguebly erroneous (and indeed even impossible) “conversion” from either CMYK or PMS CVC to RGB doesn’t match the given RGB values ( #FF0000  and  #006600 ), then it’s the former that should be changed, not the latter. (And that putative change wouldn’t affect the SVG file we host, anyway, as its color information is encoded as RGB values.)

Purposeful edit warring performed by user Kazimier Lachnovič (new incident)

Hello, there already is a report at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Edit warring, censorship, acts of humiliation by users Kazimier Lachnovič and Лобачев Владимир about this user's Kazimier Lachnovič behavior, however as still no actions were taken against him – he actively and purposefully continues his edit warring in Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. This time I attempted to unify names of the Lithuanian King Mindaugas and Belarusian city Novogrudok at the Wikimedia Commons Category:Mindoŭh Hill in Navahrudak by renaming it to Mindaugas Hill in Novogrudok with officially recognized and the most widely used names (including in the English Wikipedia) in order to easier the understanding for the readers, but he initiated an ordinary edit war at these two categories.

The first point of COM:LP does not specify the order in which descriptions in various languages should be placed. So an authoritative English language variant cannot be put somewhere below other languages where it would be difficult for readers to find. Just imagine this template with 30 languages and the English variant somewhere in between of them. Moreover, different languages have different alphabets, so I'm not surprised that the alphabetical order is not established as a rule anywhere on Commons. For example, Б (Беларуская) is not equal to B and I'm not even talking about such languages as: አማርኛ , ދިވެހިބަސް, मुख्य पन्ना. @Homoatrox: Incorrect examples as these places are not named after foreign monarchs. For example, nobody translates names of Queen Elizabeth II (List of things named after Elizabeth II) or Queen Victoria (List of places named after Queen Victoria). King Mindaugas is a Lithuanian monarch, so he is a foreigner to Belarus (Mindaugas - Britannica), same as Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria. One of the elderships of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius is called Naujamiestis (Category:Naujamiestis, Vilnius) which translates to the English language as New City, but nobody attempts to translate such term. A relevant example would be Queen Elizabeth Stadium in a Chinese speaking Hong Kong (Category:Queen Elizabeth Stadium). @Pofka: Toponyms named after monarchs are still generally transcribed after their modern local form. Many places named after Alexander the Great use forms derived from the Arabic—Persian—Turkish version of his name (Iskander/Iskandar): Iskanderkul lake, Iskander Darya river, Iskandariya city in Iraq, İskenderun city in Turkey, etc. Only the unique Alexandria in Egypt uses the Greek form of the name. By the way, I don't think that "places named after foreign monarchs" should have any specific naming conventions other than general principles, because the rich and tangled history will lead to many paradoxes. Uncensored photos of national ID cards and passports

I can't find any policy disallowing this type of files, our oversight policy allows removal of non-public personal information of anonymous users but not of registered users who have posted the information by themselves. Need an admin to rename three files please

I have a Lua module (en:module:NPVIC status) that uses images in Category:NPVIC map component images 2021-2031. Right now, those images have two name formats, and the module is using an expensive function call to determine which name exists. I requested moves for 50 or so files, which were mostly done within hours, except for three files (ME green.svg, RI green.svg, TN green.svg). Buttons not appearing at some DRs

Has anyone encountered any issues where the buttons don't appear at the DR? While deleting some files today, I came across Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Korean War Veterans Memorial which has 12 separate nominations. The buttons didn't appear and I had to go to each individual file and manually delete them. Could the issue be that the DR is too long? Also, would it be better if we have a bot to move long DRs to a subpage (/Archive) so that it doesn't cause any other issues in future? --Minoraxtalk 02:08, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
