Hello, Martinvl!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:DLS M25.JPG. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

File:Birth certificate of Prince George of Cambridge - 20130802.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 - Ein Wiki-Beitrag für die Denkmaltopographie

[edit]

Hallo Martinvl,

Valued images

[edit]

Hi Martinvl, have you been through the Valued Image process before? It's one of Commons' way of recognising good photos. The [[criteria are straightforward, images have to be:

  1. Is the most valuable illustration of its kind on Wikimedia Commons
  2. Is nominated as being the most valuable within a suitably generic scope
  3. Must illustrate its subject well
  4. Is fully described on the image page
  5. Is geocoded, when relevant
  6. Is well categorized at an appropriate level

I was browsing some of the WLM and File:194 OldScotneyCastle.jpg stood out. I think if it was nominated the in the scope Scotney Castle SW view it would stand a good chance of being promoted. Nev1 (talk) 15:49, 24 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Nev1: Thank you for your message. I have nominated the picture.

Goedemorgen Martinvl,

Hi Dominicus
Thanks for your message. I made a few minor changes to the VI request and also added an English description to the image itself. I trust that these are OK. -- Martinvl (talk) 19:02, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Goedemorgen Martinvl,

Hi Charles

Please look at my comments at this VI submission. Did you actually check the description? Martinvl (talk) 08:33, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - yes I did check it and tried to see if there is an appropriate English description, but couldn't see one so I gave nominator the benefit of the doubt this time. Charles (talk) 10:18, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Charlesjsharp: Hi Charles,
Please look at the history of this file. It was submitted a few days ago by the same editor. You will see that it was very poorly documented and that I overhauled the documentation. I would like the editor to do his own documentation this time. If you give editors the benefit of the doubt, please also correct any mistakes that they have made. Martinvl (talk) 10:56, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I really don't have any strong views on this nomination either way, but I do agree with your intention of getting things right. Charles (talk) 11:48, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. I see your point about giving the benefit of the doubt to th eeditor, but this is not an examination for the benefit of the editor, but rather an examination to guarantee to the user that the image is better than the run-of-the-mill images in Commons. Candidate status in open MVRs

[edit]

Hi Martinvl,

I'm guessing that one of us is misunderstanding the policies/guidelines or whatever they are here. Can we try to figure-out what the rules actually say.

The reasons I changed all the MVR candidates to "discussed" are that:

  1. The last line of Commons:Valued image candidates/Most valued review states: "Each candidate should have its status parameter set to discussed, while the MVR is ongoing."
  2. The first sentence in the second big yellow box at the top of the Commons:Valued image candidates#Pending Most valued review candidates section states: "All open candidates in an MVR has to be in the discussed state".

Can you clarify the basis for your reverts of my changes and your comment that the '"discussed" status only applies to existing VIs"', with references to any supporting guidelines etc.

Thanks. DeFacto (talk) 18:38, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@DeFacto: I have reread the policies/guidelines. You are quite right and I apologize. I have taken the liberty of slightly rewording Commons:Valued image candidates/Most valued review. I trust that you will agree with my rewording. I will reinstate your work. Martinvl (talk) 21:30, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Block

[edit]

--Christian Ferrer (talk) 19:49, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Martinvl (<span class="signature-talk"></span>) 08:34, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

[Sorry for not using Unblock granted; no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to display my rationale] This was one of the worst blocks I've seen in nine years of editing WMF projects. More details. Nyttend (talk) 03:24, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Christian Ferrer: I am confused by this block. I don't see any prior discussion, and yet this user was indefinitely blocked for "vandalism" and "disturbing behavior." Can you please explain this? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:27, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Magog the Ogre: I took decision for block during the discussion there. The events as I see them are:
He asked for a change of rules [1]
Two days later, with no answers of the active users of the project, he made the change [2], I am myself active in this project, and never heard about this change of rule nor even about any proposal, maybe Archaeodontosaurus, the most active user of the project can confirm that too.
As you can see in this archive, two month before the change we had a discussion about the project, you can check the names, thus I guess it was not so hard to have the attention of the community for who want it. You may say it's a different talk page, well, indeed. However this talk page is easily accessible.
The discussions inside the nominations themselve are also very common, and it's quite easy to talk about proposals/changes.
He opened a thread in the administrator's user problems. "I have been trying to persuade a group of editors..." "Since three the editors that I named are French ". What? no one had discuss about this change, he tried to persuade?, it's because they are french?. If you're able to see good faith in that, Magog the Ogre, me I am not.
Exemple of reactions that follows:
[3] "Abuses, repeated of Martinval are a problem." Archaeodontosaurus
[4] "There is absolutely no mention of the obligation of a wikilink. The links references for images has never been a mandatory requirement." Medium69
[5] "I don't. Wikimedia Commons VI process would work a lot better without an interfering busybody making everyone else's life a misery. In future I intend to ignore Martinvl's contributions as if they weren't there." Charlesjsharp
I precise at this point no one is aware that he made a change of the rules. The change was discover by RP88. I reverted it, as nobody was asked for this change nor have agreed.
When he spoke [6], he spoke not to try to apologize about any clumsiness: "Now will you please undo your changes".
How is it possible at this point, acting in good faith, to stay on the big white horse and not to jeopardize a bit: why the other users have so much animosity? why have I been reverted?
There is not even one act by him really in the direction of the community. So much endianness (I'm not sure about traduction, french : jusqu'au boutisme), that continue here (victim/defensive position), with no real questioning, can not be good faith and prove not only he did not have, but nor he don't have yet the will to work collaboratively with the others.
I suggest not to unblock him but to increase the block to one month or two as for now he did not yet understand nor he did not show he has the will to understand that he created himself an unpleasant environment for the other users (see their comments above). --Christian Ferrer (talk) 09:29, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment I will not go back on the many problems raised by this user. But only on the block. This is not vandalism. The vandalism are easy to see. Here we are in a very special case of a user who modifies the Community rules and that it uses this falsification to impose his ideas. There forgery and use of forgeries. I must admit I have not seen. I had not imagined was possible. This behavior is more serious than vandalism. The block is entirely justified and the community must be vigilant about the actions of this user --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 10:11, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • That confirm an increase of the block is appropriate IMO. --Christian Ferrer (talk) 10:52, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Firstly, will Christian Ferrer please read WP:BRD (in English) or WP:CRD (in French). No discussion took place before he imposed the block.
  • As regards points #2 and #3 may I draw to attention that in the discussion that took place after I was blocked. In that discission it became apparent that due to the multilingual nature of the VI project, the normal Wikipedia practices are not always practicable, and more importantly that the preferred process for the VI project is not documented. When I made the changes I was not aware of the preferred process. This is not my failing –it is a failing of the project as a whole. This failing can easily be remedied by creating a page ":COMMONS:VI Maintence" which catalogues such processes. Links to this page should be added to the VI index family of templates VIlinks/XX ("XX" = "en", "fr", "de" etc).
  • The English definition of "Vandalism" and the French definition of "Vandalisme" contain the words "deliberate attempt to damage/délibérément destructive" (my bolding). As I have argued earlier and as the above paragraph shows, any problems caused were the result of misunderstanding. I therefore utterly reject any suggestion of vandalism.
  • I will not defend the other points in detail, but pick out the one that sparked the whole discussion. Will Magog the Ogre (or whoever else is picking up this thread) please visit this VI and check the links in the description ("Apeiba echinata" and "fruits and seeds"). He will find that they do not link up to any page. This applies to the English, French and German versions of the description). If these links are part of a valued image what does that say about the quality of Wikimedia Commons? My sole intent was to maintain the quality of VI, but my observations were not taken seriously as is shown here.
  • Finally, may I point out that Christian Ferrer's comments on this page shows that he is not an entirely uninvolved administrator.
Martinvl (talk) 11:04, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • That, above, confirm two weeks or two month will change nothing, "indefinitely block" will be more appropriate, if it is not this time so the next time. I hope we are not going to start a "collection" of 7 blocks as in English Wikipedia. --Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:23, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
All this story goes beyond vandalism, it is indeed worse than that. Falsification in order to impose ideas, or maybe worse, in order to create an hostile environment. --Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:50, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • How is it possible even for a beginner, and he is not, not to think that change rules of a project as VI, QI or FP without even a word exchanged with another user can not pose some problems ? would come to the idea of one of you to do such a thing and not to think that the other users will not appreciate, even when you were beginner ? seriously, how is it possible ? Imagine yourself doing that, please imagine, you change the rules of one of this project without any exchange (discussion), you open a thread at user problem’s and you claim about your good faith, is someone here able to do that and to claim about good faith? There is none good faith here, only provocations. I ask this user indefinitely blocked. --Christian Ferrer (talk) 13:34, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Christian Ferrer:
  • The standard Wikipedia policy regarding changes is to use the WP:BRD (in English) / WP:CRD (in French) cycle. In some cases preliminary discussion is requested. I did that, but nobody responded to my requests or additions for ten months, so I assumed that nobody had any objections or further contributions to make. The question is whether I have to apologize for failing to follow the VI project rules (which are different to the English Wikipedia rules) or whether the VI project rules are so poorly written (if they are written at all), that the VI Project as a whole needs to put its own house in order.
  • There is no point you and I discussing whether or not the bad Wikipedia links in this image are sufficient that it should have failed #4.2 of the VI criteria (and therefore should not have been awarded a VI status). This is best discussed by people who have no association with the project. Their verdict on this image will decide the rest of my criticisms.
Martinvl (talk) 16:42, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Let me be clear: falsification is the intentional presentation of incorrect information, or hoaxing. There is no possible way in which a good-faith user can construe this as falsification. Nyttend (talk) 03:24, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sundial category hierarchy destruction

[edit]

Hi Martinvl, why are you dismantling the southern hemisphere sundial category hierarchy? DeFacto (talk). 10:36, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I got it slightly wrong in ther first place. I am now aliogning it with the definition in Wikipedia (en:Sundial#Sundials in the Southern Hemisphere) and taking the opportunity to ensure that every sundial in the southern hemisphere is properly classified (horizontal, vertical, cylindrical etc). The Southern Hemisjphere category will now point to sundials on an individual basis, not a country by country basis. Martinvl (talk) 11:01, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Why not by horizontal/vertical/equatorial per country? Then it's easy to do hemispheres, etc. DeFacto (talk). 16:04, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have rewritten the introductory line to "Sundials in the Southern Hemisphere". In it I now emphasise that this clasification is to do with the ordering of the numbers rather the geographical location. Martinvl (talk) 18:12, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
But that category name is unambiguously referring to a geographical location. Why destroy this perfectly valid and valuable category when you could just simply create another called something like Sundials designed for use in the southern hemisphere? You are undoing the hard work of others for no clear or apparent good reason. DeFacto (talk). 18:33, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Since I am now 3/4 of the way through the change, I can easily get it renamed using a BOT. Martinvl (talk) 18:36, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look at the way I've done Category:Sundials in Portugal and think about applying that logic to the ones you are working on. DeFacto (talk). 22:55, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've extended that logic to southern hemisphere countries. I think you'll agree it gives a very flexible scheme. By adding just the one appropriate category to vertical or horizontal sundials we now get the ability to see all vertical or horizontal sundials by country or by hemisphere. You might like to help cover the "equatorial" types and other odd types. DeFacto (talk). 22:37, 8 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello,

About this, I think your e-mail correspondent made a mistake. The player on the photo does not look like other photos of Gerry McNeil on the internet. He does not seem to have a goaler's equipment. Gerry McNeil was not with the Canadiens in 1945, although he was with their affiliate team. The player looks like Glen Harmon. (Your talk page is categorized in Category:Paul Kruger. That should probably be fixed.) -- Asclepias (talk) 23:26, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Asclepias: : Hi,
Thanks for your note. I was relying on second-hand information and I gave the source of my information which I will admit was not particualrly reliable. Please feel free to change it if you believe my identification to be incorrect, particularly if you have a more reliable source - I will not oppose it. BTW, thanks for the note about the "Category:Paul Kruger" - I have corrected it. Martinvl (talk) 12:22, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Martinvl, I noticed you changed the scope on Commons:Valued image candidates/Exbury House 2017.jpg. Per Commons:Valued image candidates/Exbury House 2017.jpg#Changes in scope during the review period you also need to add a "VIC-scope-change" template to the bottom of the review. Although there are no votes yet, I suppose it adds clarity in the context of the discussion. DeFacto (talk). 11:27, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.

In File:Metrication by year map.svg can you color the ex-Soviet states the same color as Russia, because the metric system was introduced by a decree of the Council of People’s Commissars of the RSFSR (which included the current ex-Soviet states except Moldova and Baltic states) on Sept. 14, 1918? The RSFSR was renamed the USSR in 1923 and the RSFSR became one of its members as a Union Republic. It was made mandatory for the USSR by a resolution of the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR on July 21, 1925. And on April 16, 1927 other systems of measurements were prohibited for parallel usage, and the metric system became the sole system of measurement. When the metric reform in the USSR was completed, the Commission was abolished by the Decree of the Council of People's Commissars on March 15, 1928

Here is a source in Russian which I think is credible and which can be translated by a Google translator: http://www.krotov.info/history/11/1/kamenzeva_05.htm

If you don't object, can I put further requests for both File:World metrication.svg and File:Metrication by year map.svg, if I find other credible sources for other countries? Sources, let alone credible ones, are very difficult to find.

Thank you.

Beste Martin, Ik ben erg blij met uw positieve commentaar on mijn foto.
Dear Martin, I am very pleased with your positive comment on my photo. I do not master the English language. Everything goes through translate and that sometimes gives confusion. Your improvements are greatly appreciated by me. Sincerely,--Agnes Monkelbaan (talk) 07:25, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the UK. We'd be delighted if you would do so again this year and help record our local built environment for future generations.

You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments UK website. Or, if you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. This year's contest runs until 30 September 2019.

Many thanks for your help once more! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:35, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Martinvl,
thank you for uploading the Si logo with constants (File:SI Illustration.png). Unfortunately, the image has a colored background., but fortunately, BIPM has provided the original logos for free use - see http://www.bipm.org/en/si-download-area/graphics-files.html

I would suggest that you replace the image you published by the original logo. -- Cheers, Wassermaus (talk) 20:52, 21 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your e-mail. I checked your reference, but the files at the site you identified are free for non-commercial use only (See here) and are therefore "not free to use" in the Wikimedia sense (see Commons:Licensing. Since the image that I found was extracted from a document published under Creative Commons freedom by the BIPM (owner of the image copyright), my extraction of the image from the document makes it a free image in the Wikimedia sense. I however take your point about the coloured background and will replace it with a white one in the next day or two.
Martinvl (talk) 09:54, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks. So "free for non-commercial use only" is not free for Wikipedia!? very strange ... you never stop learning. Cheers, Wassermaus (talk) 20:38, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi it's me again. I clicked on one of the original links to the .jpg and got the following pop-up:

"Please read the copyright information below. By downloading this resource you are agreeing to follow the stated terms and conditions?
CC BY-ND 4.0
By ticking this box, you accept that Creative Commons License CC BY-ND 4.0 is applicable: you are free to share (copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format for any purpose, even commercially), under the following terms:
Attribution (you must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made, they may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use); No Derivatives [...]"

"Even commercially" - so doesn't this mean that Wikipedia may use it? -- Wassermaus (talk) 09:00, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Wassermaus: . Wikimedia Commons may not host the photo, but in certain languages, Wikipedia allows en:Fair Use in which case, those particular Wikipedias do host the photos and police its use.
May I give you a few examples of CC4 - if you want to use this image you can pay Alamy momey (which I don't see) or you can take a copy straight from here for free. I am not very happy about this, but that is what CC4 means.
On the other hand, this site, this site and this site all use another of my images in a way with which I can identify. Again, I received no money, but neither do the end-users of the images - that is what CC4 is really about!
Martinvl (talk) 16:44, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Got it - thanks! Yet another thing: Could you update the world map of adherents to the meter convention? Venezuela is no longer member state - see [7] . They were excluded (see fin. report 2018 [8] , in French) -- cheers Wassermaus (talk) 08:16, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Wassermaus: I have done the .png version. (The .svg version had already been done.) Also migrated replaced the .png version (Ukranian name) on the Ukranian Wikipedia with the global .svg version. Martinvl (talk) 16:29, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Permission to use "Reconciliation, by Josefina de Vasconcellos, in St. Michael's Cathedral, Coventry" in a book

[edit]

Hello Martinvl, I would like your permission to use your image "Reconciliation, by Josefina de Vasconcellos, in St. Michael's Cathedral, Coventry" in a self-published book I am writing. The company through which I am publishing has stated that they do not acknowledged as an authority the Wikimedia usage rights and so I must request that you give permission explicitly. It also gives me a chance to ask you, if you give me permission to use the image, about how I should attribute the work to you. What phrase would you like me to include?

Château de Vosne-Romanée, Comte Ligier-Belair

[edit]

Hello Martinvl, as a result of your remark, I would like to point out that Indeed it is about the quality of the wine produced in this area which confers all the value of the ":Château de Vosne-Romanée, Comte Ligier-Belair". In this regard, although the title seemed obvious, I provided some details in the description of the building. The first plot was bought by the General and Baron of the Empire Louis Liger-Belair who in 1815 settled in Burgundy in the Château de Vosne-Romanée acquired from his wife Claire Basire, with a vineyard (monopolies of La Romanée, de la Tâche and de la Grande Rue, as well as plots of Clos-Vougeot and Chambertin). Sincerely yours--Pierre André (talk) 14:50, 4 May 2021 (UTC).[reply]

@Pierre André Leclercq: Thank you for your e-mail. Your description is a lot better, though may I suggest that you replace the opening line with
"Château Vosne-Romanée, residence and offices of the owner of Domaine Comte Ligier-Belair, located in the village of Vosne-Romanée" (with any correction that you see fit).
This will describe exactly what is in the picture, why you consider it to be valuable and will put the names "Vosne-Romanée" and "Comte Ligier-Belair" into perspective for the reader.
Best regards Martinvl (talk) 17:13, 4 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

OK thanks for your response. I've done corrections. Best regards Pierre André (talk) 18:02, 4 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Metre Convention

[edit]

Could you kindly update File:Metre Convention Signatories.svg? Estonia is now full member. Thx, Wassermaus (talk) 20:08, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Yet another update: Zimbabwe is no longer an associate member - see [9]. But Ethiopia is an associate. Could you update it again? -- Wassermaus (talk) 20:44, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again: However, Zimbabwe is not a former member state. It is a former associate member (just like Yemen) - cf en:Metre Convention#Former member states. These two states should be treated alike: either no color at all or light green (dark green should be reserved for former full members). Cheers, Wassermaus (talk) 14:45, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yet one more remark: green is s very “strong” (prominent) color. I former (associate) members should have a less prominent color - something yellowish, for example — Wassermaus (talk) 16:54, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wassermaus: ✓ Done I have also updated the description in the file and also the article af:Meterkonvensie (I an reasonably fluent in Afrikaans). Do you propose leaving editors in other languages to update their own language. BTW, I am blocked from editing both the English and the Simple English Wikipedias. Martinvl (talk) 20:22, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have updated the legend of de:Meterkonvention and en:Metre Convention. I will have a look at some other langues versions later, otherwise let's leave it to the communities of the respective langues. Wassermaus (talk) 21:03, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Captions on the Welsh Wikipedia

[edit]

Saw the message yesterday on Llywelyn2000's talkpake as it must be on my watchlist after an edit I made. I've been through all contributions up to the last one in December 2020 under cy username Martinvl (is that correct?). Some minor changes were necessary, mainly to do with mutations which I'm surprised Google didn't get correct. In one edit you added a caption Hyfforddi cyrraedd gyrfa Torpantau, which literally means 'Training reaching Torpantau gyrfa' I can guess that the training bit means 'the train'(!) but gyrfa has many meanings. What were you trying to say?--Rhyswynne (talk) 11:16, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for checking my captions - I know from my use of Google Translate that some Afrikaans translations look weird. As far as I can recall, I was trying to say "Train at the Torpantau teminus". The railway line currently runs from Pant to Torpantau. See here for more details. Martinvl (talk) 15:10, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, Wiki Science Competition 2019 and Wiki Science Competition 2021, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2023 has started in almost all the countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2023, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase (such as Russia), please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2024.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Update request

[edit]

Hello, Martinvl.

Can you color the countries still displayed in gray in File:World metrication.svg? All the countries displayed in gray have adopted the metric system. These countries have been updated in File:Metrication by year map.svg, which are shown with their decade of metrication. I cannot update SVG files, because I lack the knowledge, and the coloring for this map is clearer, compared to the updated map. Hence why I put this request. I am capable of updating PNG files, and which I want to do for its PNG version File:SI-metrication-world.png, if File:World metrication.svg is updated.

Kindest regards, Moroike (talk) 09:39, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Moroike: Thank you for your e-mail. I have checked the file World metrication.svg and found many inconsistencies for example it shows that France had adopted the metric system by 1800 (correct - they adopted a preliminary version of the metric system in 1799). It also shows that the United Kingdom adopted the metric system by 1960 (incorrect, the announcement of a general switch to the metric system was made in 1965 and most of the conversions had been done by 1975).
Moreover, care must be taken as to what is meant by "having switched to the metric system" unless there is a consistent defintition for all countries, considerable debate will result. The data that I used is taken from Vara's PhD thesis and is listed at File:Metrication by year map.svg.
Given the amount of work needed to correct these shortcomings, I hesitate to make the changes. Meanwhile, I note that nobody is usng File:SI-metrication-world.png and since a number of different .png versions can be created from File:World metrication.svg, I do not see any point in updating File:SI-metrication-world.png (which has an incorerct name anyway as SI was only defined in 1960!). As an alternative to reworking everything, may I suggest that a new file be created File:Metrication by quarter century.svg which would be an adaptation of File:Metrication by year map.svg, but with graduations of 25 years rather than yearly.
Martinvl(talk) 22:27, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the reply.
Yes, a new map is preferable, because in File:World metrication.svg and in its duplicate File:SI-metrication-world.png, metrication is only shown up to the 1980s. More countries have introduced the metric system since then and many still are undergoing metrication even lasting for decades. Also in File:Metrication by year map.svg, metrication is shown up to the year 2000, even though more countries have adopted the metric system since then and more plan to do so.
