Hi, if an image like Image:Kanchenjunga summit 1861.jpeg is old enough to be in the public domain, then it can't be GFDLed - GFDL is a license that only makes sense for material still in copyright. Stan Shebs 13:34, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for pointing this out. I have had a look but cannot discover how to go about changing the licensing - I have never done this before. If you know how to do it, I would be very grateful if you would make the appropriate changes. Many thanks, John E. Hill (talk) 05:56, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi John
I wasn't sure how to contact you. Oral stories also tell me that I am Beothuck. My ancestors from Twillingate and other areas of Notre Dame Bay. Have you completed your DNA?

This image of a mural in a pub bar in Tiboboora is realy the work of Clifton Pugh. A Google search will quickly verify that. Click here > mural
You will see that the mural was originally painted in 1969. Your photograph is 1976 so it can be assumed that in your photograph the mural is in its original depiction.
In the Google search you should click for Images > mural Images to see that the original mural has received some changes, notably the removal of the figure with the wide-spread arms.
The wide-spread arms was a motif that Arthur Boyd used greatly in his paintings but it was not Pugh's and today that part of the mural is not present.
Given the material that the Google search reveals it would be possible for you to re title the image: Harold & publican with Clifton Pugh Mural in Tiboboora pub 1976. The year 1976 is really important for an appreciation of mural at that date. Thanks to you for putting the photograph up. --Laurencebeck (talk) 04:55, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Dear Sir or Madam:

I have been asked by user Arria Belli to post information showing I have permission to use the photos I posted recently showing tilapia sampling at Jensen's Crossing on the Endeavour River. Here is a copy of the email I received from Jason Carroll who headed the project. I have also spoken to him on the phone and he is eager to get this information out. You will note his earlier note at the bottom of the page - I then asked him for specific permission to place them in the "public domain" and you can see his reply directly below. If this is not sufficient - please email me and lat me know what you need.

Many thanks,

John Hill ...........................................

John

You may release these photos into the "public domain" and use them how you wish.

Hello, John Hill!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:Dalai Lama and Bishop Tutu. Carey Linde.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Hi! Don't know what is happening to the letters I send. I try to make sure I send a copy of Lewis Robert's letter of permission to use his images with each image as I upload it. But maybe I forget sometimes - if so, please blame it on Mr. Alzheimer ;^) Anyway, I have forwarded the letter again to the address you gave. Hi John. The release is covered by https://ticket.wikimedia.org/otrs/index.pl?Action=AgentTicketZoom&TicketID=3086277. Please tag any uploads from Lewis Robert's orchids work with . There is no need for you to resend the email, we only need it once ;) I'd appreciate it if you can provide me with a list of files you have uploaded from him: I can collate all the tickets up and rationalise the OTRS situation then (its messy at the moment).--Nilfanion (talk) 01:11, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nilfanion! Thank you for that note - I do appreciate your help as it will certainly make it easier in future when I get around to uploading more of Lewis Roberts' exceptional botanical illustrations. I have about 60-70 more I could upload (!). The trouble is, I like to have at least the stub of an article to go with them - and this takes time - especially as I seem unable to find enough time to do all the other things I want to on the Wikipedia. Would there be any possibility (or point) in uploading the rest of them as a batch lot to Wikimedia Commons, even if there are no articles (yet) to go with each of them? It may be useful to have them archived on Wikimedia Commons so people can use them in the future (and in case I don't otherwise manage to get a chance to use them all in articles).
There is no issue with you uploading all of the images (as long as they are below 500KB of course) to Commons. It doesn't matter if there is an associated article on wikipedia or not. Easiest thing would be for you to upload them and we can get them all sorted (regarding permissions) now, and you can write the articles as you feel like it--Nilfanion (talk) 09:55, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please let me know what you think. Finally, I will go back over my sent mail folder and drawn up a list of ones I have already done soon for you. Cheers, and thanks again, John E. Hill (talk) 02:59, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PS. Here is a list of all of the Lewis Robert's illustrations I have uploaded so far (or, at least, as many as I could find on a quick search). Hope it is of some use to you.

Desert Tree Frog Cooktown

[edit]

Hello,

I am trying to get in contact with people who have sighted the Desert Tree Frog during the 2010-2011 Wet Season in the Cape York area - particularly Cooktown. The Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife put me onto the photo taken by John E Hill in 2006 but I am interested in more recent sightings.

Anyone with information - including Mr Hill if he reads this - can contact me at:

sub@regionalandremote.com.au

I am a journalist / editor with the Regional and Remote Newspaper Group - which includes the Cooktown Local News.

Thanks,

Grant Banks Group Sub Editor Regional and Remote Newspapers

Hi Grant,
Yes, we have seen them this year. The seem to come to our rain guage every Wet Season to breed. BTW we live about 25 km towards Hopevale from Cooktown. If I can be of any other help do let me know. Cheers, John E. Hill (talk) 07:33, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Twillingate Religious Affiliation

[edit]

I notice you have made a chart of religious affiliations for Twillingate. It is a useful addition to the article except that you have made a mistake that is confusing and might well upset some people. You list people as being either Protestant, Roman Catholic or Christian. Now, both Prtotestants and Catholics consider themselves to be Christians. So, it is unclear who you mean by "Christians" (maybe "Pentacostals", "Evangelical Christians", Baptists, or some other group or groups???), and it also implies that Protestants and Catholics are NOT Christian. Would you please adjust the chart so that it is accurate and will not offend people - otherwise it may well be removed from the article. Thank you, Sincerely, John E. Hill (talk) 17:14, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In reply to your note about defining religious definitions in bar chart.....I don't know...you would have to read the Government of CanadaStatistics Canada definition of their Religious classifications on the census...I didn't design the census myself....File:TwillingateReligiousAffiliation.jpg --> image The article had a tag on it to use images / charts instead of prose in that section...therefore the image from Stats Can data.... Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 19:01, 2 June 2011 (UTC) 18:57, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your helpful reply, SriMesh. I have just checked with the link you gave and they define the category "Christian" on their website as "Christian, n.i.e. Includes mostly answers of "Christian", not otherwise stated." So, I guess there should be no problem here - it is obviously used for people who either do not feel they fit in the category of the named Christian denominations, or don't want to be specific. I will reword the article to make it clearer. Cheers, John E. Hill (talk) 00:36, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Permission mail for File:De Havilland 53 Interceptor aircraft sketched by A. E. (Ted) Hill. 1930s.jpg

[edit]

Hi again John, sorry to bother you. I had a short look into your recent uploads: I noticed that File:De Havilland 53 Interceptor aircraft sketched by A. E. (Ted) Hill. 1930s.jpg says that a mail to our OTRS team will be sent. But as we can see on the file page apparently none was processed by them yet. Did you want to sent one? Did you do so already? If you did not get reply from them until now it might be good to resent it. I am just telling you that because I want to avoid that this drawing gets deleted for "missing permission" which it may get at some point in the future. Thanks for uploading File:Fleet 2 aircraft sketched by A. E. (Ted) Hill.1930s..jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

For this and the above image, both are photographs of paintings. Photographs of two-dimensional works (like paintings) are exact derivatives of the original work and therefore do not gain a new copyright status. In this situation, the copyright of both photos & paintings is owned by the artist Alfred Hallett and we would need permission from him to release these files under the licenses listed. Reply to User:TLSkuda re the "no permission" tags entered on several files listed above

[edit]

Dear TLSkuda:

I appreciate that you are trying to make sure everything is correct regarding the copyright status of the files you have listed above as having no permission. This is what I have done to this point to try to satisfy you requests: I have entered "self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all" for all of them - but with different reasons - these are:

1. The first two sketches of airplanes by my father, Dr. A. E. Hill, I legally inherited from him after he died. As such, I believe I am the legal copyright owner. I then took photos of them to upload to the Wikipedia. I cannot see there can be any question of my right to do this. If so, would you please explain it to me? 2. The photos I took of the paintings by Alfred Hallett are all photos of paintings my wife and I commissioned and bought at his asking price from him c. 1980 when he was our landlord in Dharamkot, H.P., India. He was a single man who has since passed away leaving no children. As such, I am the legal owner and, therefore, I believe I should have copyright. Again, if you do not agree, please explain this to me. 3. The right for me to upload a photo of the painting of Cooktown Orchids by Vera Scarth-Johnson was discussed at length years ago by the Vera Scarth-Johnson Association committee at a properly held Association meeting as I have indicated on the Talk page. This was accepted by the Wikipedia editors at the time - so I don't understand what the problem is. However, if this is still not satisfactory, I can ask (and I am sure I will receive) permission from the representatives of the present committee - I don't want to bother them unless it is really necessary - but I can get it done if it is really required.

I hope this answers at least most of your queries - I look forward to hearing from you about it all.

Best wishes John E. Hill (talk) 15:07, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Church near Sackville NB

I see you've updated https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sackville,_New_Brunswick with https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Church_near_Sackville.JPG. Thanks for that. Do you have more details on the name and location of this church? --Cornellier (talk) 16:08, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Reply - Hi! good to hear from you. I did visit it but am hazy on the details other than it was an Anglican church (church of England) now and I live in Australia so I cannot check easily. I am sorry I don't have these details but I will write to a cousin of mine in New Brunswick who would likely know. If she doesn't her mother (now in her 90s) certainly will because she told me she sometimes attended that church. Will post the details on the photo's page if and when I get them. Cheers, John E. Hi John, I was just looking at the image of your great great great grandfather's whistle. Lovely photo, so thanks for uploading that. I just wanted you to confirm that it's actually 8 centimeters long, and not 8 millimeters as the description suggests. If this is the case I can get the filename altered and the description corrected. Thank you in advance. Kind regards, nagualdesign (talk) 18:17, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear nagualdesign:
Thank you so much for spotting this careless mistake of mine. I have changed the length in one place from 8 mm to the correct 8 cm and I have requested that the file heading be changed to show 8 cm - the correct length. So, hopefully, there is no need for you to do any extra work. I really appreciate your help in correcting this error. All best wishes, John E. Hill (talk) 22:40, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Sam Lord's Castle Barbadoes 1949. by Ted Hill.jpg.

Thank you.

Thank you for contacting me about this old photo. You say I need to provide more information about it but I am not clear exactly what extra information is needed. I have expanded the note I had written under "Licensing" so that it now reads: "I, John Hill, am the eldest son of Dr. A. E. (Ted) Hill and inherited his photos after his death in 2004 and so I am now the copyright holder for this photo. I hereby release the photo under GNU Free Documentation License. John E. Hill (talk) 08:39, 28 August 2016 (UTC)" Is this enough? If not, please tell me clearly what else I need to do. Apologies for the nuisance. Thanks so much for your help. Sincerely, John E. Green glass Roman cup unearthed at Eastern Han tomb, Guixian, China

[edit]

Thank you very much for uploading this image. It has been of great service in almost a dozen articles where I've just recently added it. Articles like Sino-Roman relations desperately needed images like this. For that matter, I'd like to personally thank you for translating and publishing the Weilue 魏略 online (2004), with an extensive and awesomely pedantic set of footnotes to accompany it. I'ts been very helpful in my edits to the aforementioned article and the one on Daqin. I'm putting serious thought into creating a Wikipedia article on you, for that matter, just to give you the recognition you deserve. PericlesofAthens (talk) 23:44, 17 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

how large slug?

Do you have any information on the actual size of this slug? To me it does not look extraordinary large. I would guess 5 to 8 cm, what seems to be the normal size (in Germany) of this kind of slugs. Would be nice if you could add a hint on real size to the image information. Thanks! -- Dr. Schorsch (talk) 15:14, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reply As I remember it, the slug waas about 6 inches (15 cm) long. I am sorry - I did not measure the slug when I took the photo - but, I estimated that it was about 6 inches or 15 cm long. However, this was many years ago and all I have is my memory of the event. John E. Hill (talk) 19:32, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for this image. I'm just carrying out a rewrite of w:History of the Metropolitan Police and wanted to clarify - it's dated 1821 (ie before the Met existed), but was it definitely used by an officer in the post-1829 force? Many thanks. MaybeItsBecauseImALondoner (talk) 11:04, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing out this apparent anomaly with the dates. I don't have a watertight provenance for the whistle. All I have is my "family history". I was told by my father it was passed down from my grandfather to my Dad, and then to me, with the information that it had belonged to my great great(??) grandfather who used it when he was a "Peeler" in London. I believe there were unofficial "Peelers" before the Act was passed in 1829 known as "Bow Street Runners" and he might have been one of them - but I really don't know. To be truthful, all I have is that brief bit of family lore, but it seems likely my ancestor was one of the early "Peelers". It could be that he just used a whistle that had been carved earlier when he was in the force. I am sorry I cannot be more definite that that. Best wishes, John E. Hill (talk) 22:57, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not to worry. Peeler is more usually a term for post-1829 ones - pre-1829 ones would just be called Constables (for parish constables) or Runners (for Bow Street Runners). A mystery that will perhaps never be solved, alas! MaybeItsBecauseImALondoner (talk) 09:45, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Gyalings being played at Tharlam Monastery.

Hi John, I wanted to let you know that I like your photo named in the title above. It came up while researching Nepali musical instruments. I thought you should know that the instruments appear to be Buddhist shawms or oboes, called ‘’ghyaling’’ in Nepal. There is very little on the instrument that I have found in English; my information comes from a book with detailed drawings, ‘’Musical Instruments of Nepal’’ by Ram Prasad Kadel. He mentioned that the instruments are played as a matched pair.

Thank you again for sharing your photo! Jacqke (talk) 05:40, 25 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate and understand your concern about this photo. If it is, indeed, a concern to the Traditional Owners of Uluru I would want the photo removed as speedily as possible.

The very last thing I would ever do is knowingly hurt their feelings or show any sort disrespect. However, I doubt this photo is likely to do any such thing to the Aboriginal people and culture I have devoted much of my working life to. It was taken with the full knowledge of the Senior Custodians at Uluru at the time.

My wife and I had been working for the Mutitjulu Community, and, with our son, were actually living in the Community at the eastern side of Uluru.

We lived and worked there for some years (aside from short breaks) until the return of ownership, or “Handback of Title”, by the Australian Government to the Traditional Owners in 1985.

On the day Prince Charles and Diana visited, the senior Traditional Owners living in Mutitjulu went around to greet the couple and welcome them to the Park. They included the Senior Custodian of the important Dreaming which the “Climb” so boldly and offensively desecrated.

We drove with most of the adults and many children from the Community around Uluru in the Ininti Store truck to see them. There was great excitement to see and meet the Royal couple.

There were scores of professional photographers and reporters from the international press waiting to record everything – I have never seen so many Nikons in my life! And, indeed, some of the Mutitjulu residents became annoyed at being photographed without being first asked. As one of our dear friends who was feeding her baby angrily told a pushy photographer: “Why are you taking photos of me – I’m not the Queen!.”

Prince Charles and Princess Diana were actually taken just a few metres up to one side of the old “climb” to have the requisite photos taken at a formation commonly referred to in English as “Little Ayers Rock.” This was all done with the approval of everyone present. I took this snapshot as the Prince and Princess were leaving after the official photo-shoot.

Later, we showed all the photos I had taken at Uluru to the Community and gave copies to those who wanted them.

If any of the Traditional Owners have any objections to the photo – I would like it removed immediately. However, I do think the photo has some historical value and I don’t think it is for others to make such a judgement on behalf of the Community. John E. Hill (talk) 01:30, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

Photos of Garcinia warrenii

[edit]

Hello John, you have uploaded 3 images to the category for Garcinia warrenii. Unfortunately they have been misidentified (but they could well be a different species in the genus). If you have a look at the vein patterns in the leaves you will see that they are different to the other photos in the category, and to the photos you'll find on the species' fact sheet on the Australian Tropical Rainforest Plants website. I have tried to ID them myself but there is not enough detail in the photos to do so, although you (being more familiar with the tree) may be able to. —  Junglenut | talk  05:12, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
