Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The file you uploaded, is on the main page!

The file File:Israel-2013-Aerial-Mount of Olives.jpg, that you uploaded, is on the main page today. Thank you for your contributions to this project.

Category: Israel Hiking Map file renames

[edit]

Hi, It seems that you have renamed some of the files uploaded by the Israel Hiking Map application. When renaming these files, that are linked by OSM entities, you are breaking the image link that is store in OSM and this has bad effect on the OSM community and data. I have changed the application upload prefix for future files to be "IHM". I would greatly appreciate if you could avoid changing these file names or make sure to edit the appropriate OSM entity with the new image link after the rename. I have chose to use Wikimedia common in order to store the files to avoid keeping the files to myself as the files are uploaded by users and should be open to the public. The fact that renaming a Wikimedia page breaks the image link kinda makes me regret that decision. having said that, I still didn't loose hope and I'm writing a lot of code to handle it. I can't write more code to fix these manual renames though...:-( Thanks, --Harel.mazor (talk) 12:14, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dear User:Harel.mazor: I do not know what you mean by "OSM entity", but I have only changed the name of those files which are clearly on the Occupied Palestinian West Bank. I am surprised that you are apparently not aware(?) or do not care(?) about how extremely provocative it is to to name anything in the occupied Palestinian territories as "Israeli Hiking Map". If you change the future prefix to "Hiking Map", or "HM"; it will be fine. Cheers, Huldra (talk) 21:20, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Moving Images (destroys them)

[edit]

when you change the name of a picture page from pikiwiki Israel in Wikicommons the picture in pikiwiki get lost

this was the file with the old name File:PikiWiki Israel 31101 Religion in Israel.jpg

and this is the new name File:PikiWiki 31101 Religion in Jerusalem.jpg

this is the file in pikiwiki without picture https://www.pikiwiki.org.il/image/view/31101

the connection from pikiwiki tp wikicommons is based on the name of the page and you cannot just change it without a notice

It says clearly in pikiwiki templet

Please consider notifying the project before renaming or deleting this file. Further information about the project can be found on the commons-l mailing list

please rename the files to the original name

Archnet

[edit]

Hi Huldra, there's no need to put Archnet links inside Commons categories like you did it here, that's not the practice for cultural monuments, only UNESCO links (provided by templates) are exception (see example). I do agree Archnet is a fine website so I used it as a reference inside Wikidata item, as I use other Archnet links frequently. :) --Orijentolog (talk) 00:04, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User:Orijentolog, thanks; I will put those links in wikidata in the future, then. The reason I put them here, was to use it in an en.wp article some time in the future. Cheers, Huldra (talk) 20:13, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Luckily for you, inside its Wikidata item you'll also find four more sources, all professional (scholarly) and official (registration data), and you'll find such references below every single property (like city, date, period, material, etc). Someone was crazy enough to search, compare data and insert it, not only for Ghiyasiyeh School but also for thousands of other Iranian buildings. Thus making an article would be quite easy now. :) --Orijentolog (talk) 20:24, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

We need your feedback!

[edit]

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Moves outside of any rules

[edit]
"war of indepence"?

Your moves of files named "war of indepence" to "israeli-arab war" or similar under NPOV tags is not under any rules. Commons does not have NPOV, so any more move by you under that same "justification" i will report you for hundreds or thousands of unnecessary, outside of rules and POV moves. Tm (talk) 20:53, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

See Commons:Project scope/Neutral point of view, "Commons is not Wikipedia, and files uploaded here do not necessarily need to comply with the Neutral point of view and No original research requirements imposed by many of the Wikipedia sites. Commons acts amongst other things as a common media file resource for all Wikimedia projects, and we stand apart from the rules that may be imposed locally by each of those individual projects.
It is not the role of Commons to adjudicate on subject-matter disputes nor to force local projects to use one version of a file in preference to another. Provided that a file falls within Commons scope, and can be legally hosted, we make it available. Whether and under what conditions it is actually used is a matter for the local communities of the individual projects to decide.
Images having particular national, political or religious significance including flags, emblems and maps can arouse strong passions, but Commons is not the place to decide which of various competing versions is the correct or official version. If you feel strongly that a map, emblem, flag or other file hosted here is "wrong" in some way, please try to persuade your local wiki community to make use of the version you prefer instead." Tm (talk) 20:58, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:Tm: Firstly, there is no such thing as Israels "war of indepence" on wiki, it is called "1948 Arab–Israeli War" as you can see on wikidata.
Secondly, that images "do not necessarily need to comply" doesn't mean they cannot. The term Israeli "war of indepence" is "nakba" for others. I would presume that Israeli "war of indepence" would be extremely insulting to the Palestinian prisoners pictured at Ramle in July-48, just before their expulsion. The term "1948 Israeli-Arab war" is a 100% NPOV term for a very contentious subject.
Thirdly, if someone uploaded a picture from 2022 of "Israeli-occupied Nazareth", we could not change that? If we cannot change the Israeli "war of indepence", then I cannot see that we could change "Israeli-occupied Nazareth" either, Cheers, Huldra (talk) 21:18, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You have the link to the policie. Filenames do not have a NPOV policy. You saying that there is not a term "isreali war of independence# clearly shows where is your POV, so your acts are a POV actions disguised as a NPOV action, as the term exists like in Encyclopædia Britannica. So either you revert your POv pushing or i will report you for disruptive and POV pushing.
Simple as that, your POV is clear as you clearly did not and will not rename the 2465 nakba filenames, as per your own terms "Israeli "war of indepence" is "nakba" for others". You can have your POV but your actions disguise as NPOV are the ones disruptive. Tm (talk) 22:40, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:Tm ??? Frankly, I have difficulties understanding your post. You link to an Encyclopædia Britannica article about Arab-Israeli-wars? Which clearly says that "Israel’s War of Independence" = "Palestinian Nakbah"? And then you mention 2465 nakba filenames....where actually more than 99% of those filename is "1948 Arab-Israeli War"??? Again: please see Commons:AN Huldra (talk) 22:54, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"Arab-Israeli+War" 501 filenames without "1948 Arab-Israeli War". As you say that "Israel’s War of Independence" = "Palestinian Nakbah" will you move files like the 31 in Category:2014 Nakba Day, Ramallah to Category:2014 Israeli-Arab war, Ramallah?? Of course you will not, albeit what you said that "Israel’s War of Independence" = "Palestinian Nakbah" or "Israel’s War of Independence" is the same as "Palestinian Nakbah", despite your moves like File:An assembly held in appreciation of the 1948 generation of fighters who fought in the Southern Command during the War of Independence I.jpg to File:An assembly held in appreciation of the 1948 generation of fighters who fought in the Southern Command during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War I.jpg under the false pretext of "NPOV". Tm (talk) 23:01, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:Tm: Far fewer than 501 filenames have actually "nakba" in them, see for yourself, when searching for nakba -"1948 Arab-Israeli War", and they are virtually all (including Category:2014 Nakba Day, Ramallah) for en:Nakba Day: that is an article on dozens of Wikipedias, and therefor merit a commons cat.
(And seriously: Category:2014 Israeli-Arab war, Ramallah??? What the heck is "2014 Israeli-Arab war, Ramallah"??)
I am not changing, say Category:Monument to the fallen in the War of Independence (Kiryat Tivon), or Category:Memorial to the defenders of Jerusalen in the War of Independence, or Category:War of Independence memorial in Safed, or Category:War of Independence Memorial in Ramat Gan to Category:Memorial to the defenders of Jerusalen in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, etc, etc; even if none of those categories have an article. Please stop your unfounded accusations, Huldra (talk) 23:34, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Of course you will not move Category:2014 Nakba Day, Ramallah to Category:2014 Israeli-Arab war day, Ramallah or any file with Nakba in its filename, albeit what you said that "Israel’s War of Independence" = "Palestinian Nakbah".
This clearly shows the fact is that you are the one that is POV pushing.
Also you were wrong when you said that there was no ""there is no such thing as Israels "war of indepence" on wiki" or now the hebrew wikipedia does not exist or its article War of Independence.
As said above filename do not have a NPOV policy, the term "war of independence" is also correct, so your edits are out of place. Your other unrelated edits clearly show that you have a pro-palestinian POV and that is fine, but not to move files with names that you do not like under the disguise of NPOV when you are the one pushing a particular POV. Thanks for uploading File:Emanuel Hanegbi.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:CouncilofCommandersLegend11.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

[edit]

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Blyth Hall, Shustoke, Warwickshire. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Thanks for uploading File:Portrait of Anthony Czarnik (April 2022).jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Portrait of Anthony Czarnik (April 2022).jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.
