Regarding Image of Children on Commons
[edit]File:Children of Punjab.jpg ('File' or 'Image')
This image depicts identifiable children who may not have provided consent for their likeness to be shared publicly. Since minors cannot legally consent in India, and due to potential privacy risks, this image may require review or removal under privacy guidelines.
We have no evidence that these children have knowledge where the picture/image was going to be used. It is still a privacy concern. VeritasVanguard (talk) 16:10, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, We thousands of such pictures on Commons, and {{Personality rights}} for your concerns. Yann (talk) 16:53, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Wikimedia Commons is not a social Media see Commons:NOTSOCIAL. All of the images of non notable persons especially children should be deleted.
- Who would be at fault, if the file is misused, since We have no evidence that these children have knowledge where the picture/image was going to be used. were they to use their legal rights, wouldn't Wikimedia Commons have some responsibility if such were to happen. VeritasVanguard (talk) 17:22, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Again: personality rights violations can be pursued as such, but U.S. law -- the relevant law for where Wikimedia Commons is hosted -- does not have any general prohibition against posting pictures of minors. - Jmabel ! talk 06:24, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
- "While it is true that there is no blanket prohibition in U.S. law against posting images of minors, particularly on platforms like Wikimedia Commons, this does not exempt the platform from obligations related to privacy, ethical use, and informed consent—especially regarding images of vulnerable populations, such as children under 13.
- International Law and Personality Rights of Minors: Given that these children are identifiable and from a non-U.S. jurisdiction (India), it's imperative to consider both international privacy principles and personality rights.According to principles enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)—to which India is a signatory—children's right to privacy is fundamental, and their images should not be used without explicit, informed consent by a legal guardian.
- Lack of Informed Consent and Minor Vulnerability: In the U.S., while adults in public spaces generally have limited privacy protections, minors are treated differently under both common law and statutory frameworks. The Restatement (Second) of Torts, Section 652D supports that even those in public spaces may have claims if their likeness is widely distributed without consent in a manner that violates privacy expectations. Although Wikimedia Commons applies U.S. law, it is ethically and legally precarious to assert that young, non-consenting minors have effectively waived any rights to their images in an international public domain.
- Platform Responsibility and Liability Risk: Wikimedia Commons, as a U.S.-based platform, may still bear ethical and practical liability if these images are misused. Even with a Creative Commons license, platforms bear responsibility when the use of images, particularly those involving children, poses foreseeable risks. If these images are repurposed for unintended or harmful use, Wikimedia Commons may face reputational damage, potential legal challenges under evolving privacy laws, or compliance issues with new data protection frameworks like the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and similar state laws that recognize the digital privacy rights of minors.
- Practical Precedent and Ethical Obligation: Wikimedia Commons has previously set precedents for image removal where identifiable minors are involved without verified consent, especially if they come from jurisdictions where their capacity to consent is legally nullified. The presence of numerous similar images on Commons does not negate the ethical responsibility to protect vulnerable populations and honor privacy requests. Upholding this removal request would align Wikimedia Commons with best practices in international digital ethics, as well as proactive compliance with emerging privacy norms worldwide.
- In summary, the retention of identifiable images of minors without clear, verifiable consent poses both ethical and legal challenges for Wikimedia Commons. Removal of such images protects the children involved, honors international privacy principles, and aligns with the platform's stated commitment to responsible content sharing." - @VeritasVanguard: firstly, who are you quoting? This reads like ChatGPT/AI to me. To point 1, I trust User:Satdeep Gill has gotten the appropriate permission. To point 2, you quote Restatement of the Law, Second, Torts, § 652, which says "[o]ne who intentionally intrudes, physically or otherwise, upon the solitude or seclusion of another or his private affairs or concerns, is subject to liability to the other for invasion of his privacy". This photo doesn't look like an intrusion into a person's life to me. To point 3, can you quote a specific section of the CCPA? And to point 4, can you quote such a precedent? —Matrix(!) ping onewhen replying {user - talk? -
uselesscontributions} 12:09, 3 November 2024 (UTC)- Just to provide a little context here. I took this photograph at the same time and place when I was taking pictures of adults like this File:Punjabi turbaned man - 3.jpg while stopping my car during a journey through Punjab. I did share with them that I will be uploading these photographs on the internet and both the adults and minors were simply happy. I did not go further to find out the parents of each one of them and get a written consent from them and frankly that would have made them more suspicious about my intentions. - Satdeep Gill (talk) 14:21, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Matrix The uploader has confirmed that he did not obtain parental consent for the minors. Minors cannot consent because they are unable to fully understand. VeritasVanguard (talk) 07:15, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

Upload Wizard broken for me
[edit]I made several attempts today to upload JPG files that are from my Sony a6700 camera unmodified except with some metadata added using the ExifTool utility. So no weird post‑processing or anything like that. The Upload Wizard gets stuck on the last circa 2% of the procedure under the label "Processing files ..". I've tried both Firefox and Chrome on Ubunutu. I'll try again later, but thought it might be worth flagging the issue here. The files are circa 15 MB in size. Best, RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 18:06, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- Still broken one hour later. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 19:17, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- @RobbieIanMorrison, Commons:Village_pump/Technical#Upload_Wizard_very_slow may be relevant. It seems possible that uploads are not broken/stuck just extremely slow. Did you let it run for an extended period? Commander Keane (talk) 19:53, 9 November 2024 (UTC)

Completely different images are minor improvements? Why?
[edit]Please take a look at File:Cité du Grand Parc模型.jpg, the current version looks like a completely different color and it feels like the object being photographed seems to be far away from the author (compared to the original version). Also, File:紐西蘭國家住屋模型.jpg shows that the current version is an overwrite of the original version, but they are two images of the same object at different angles. However, admin thinks that the author overwriting one's own files with minor improvements is OK. Completely different images are minor improvements? Why? - Uploading a logo to Commons is of course ok. But as far as writing an article on the English-language Wikipedia is concerned: This is so-called paid writing. You must declare this according to the rules there and always make it visible. It is also not welcome to write about your own company there. Whoever assigned you this task has really led you up the garden path. I would try to get rid of this task again. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 19:35, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

When the 1987 law was passed, it extended the copyright to 50 years P.M.A. but expired copyrights were not restored, thus photos published before 1962 are public domain in Malaysia and the U.S. Abzeronow (talk) 22:39, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

Invalid time error with a template

Maids of Honour Row, Richmond
[edit]We currently have two categories for this; Category:Maids of Honour Row, Richmond Green and Category:1-4, Maids of Honour Row, and gates and railings. Given that they are covering the same place, I'd suggest that the latter should be merged into the former. KJP1 (talk) 09:50, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- Category:1-4, Maids of Honour Row, and gates and railings is older, I'll merge into that. Probably a CfD would have been better, but this is pretty clearcut. - Jmabel ! talk 21:16, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
TIFF Image nomination and Use of background
[edit]Wikipedia Help Desk/Quality Image Review Team,
I am seeking clarification on two specific points related to image uploads and nominations on Wikimedia Commons. Please find my questions below: 1) Quality Image Nomination for TIFF Format :- Can I nominate an image in TIFF format for the Quality Image status on Wikimedia Commons? Alternatively, is there a requirement to first convert TIFF images to JPEG format before they become eligible for Quality Image nomination? Please clarify if there are any rules or recommendations specific to file formats in this context. 2. Background Color Guidelines for Images:- Are there any specific rules on Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia that require using a particular color for the image background? I would like to know if there are any guidelines on acceptable or preferred background colors to ensure my image adheres to Wikipedia’s standards or Quality Image Nomination.
I appreciate your assistance with these questions. I look forward to your response to ensure my images meet the necessary criteria for quality evaluation and proper upload. IndrajitDas 14:32, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Indrajit: TIFF format is fine, as far as I know, but Quality Images must be created by a Commons contributor, and TIFFs rarely are.
- There is certainly no general rule about colors of backgrounds; it's hard even to imagine what such a rule would look like. Presumably it is important that backgrounds not distract from the chief subject of the image, but I can't imagine being about to state that by saying something like "backgrounds should never be yellow."
- There doesn't seem to be any particularly good place to ask questions about Quality Images. Does someone have a suggestion? - Jmabel ! talk 21:27, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
Ocala National Forest subcat errors
[edit]Earlier this month, I added some new images related those in the Category:Ocala National Forest. The total number of images in the Category:Signs in Ocala National Forest category are 39, but for some reason on both the ONF category and the Category:National forest signs in the United States category only list 37 images. Likewise, the number of images in the Category:Silver Glen Springs are 16, but for some reason the ONF category claims there are only 13 images. Replacing redirect with file
[edit]I recently requested the file File:ElectoralCollege2028.svg, a file with just the text "Electoral College 2028", to be moved to its new location of File:ElectoralCollege2028 Text.svg. This was due to the fact that the file name ElectoralCollegeXXXX is always used for the map so as to ensure consistency between the maps. However, upon the file being moved it left behind a redirect. Can I override this with an actual electoral college map? If so, how do I do that? DimensionalFusion (talk) 17:58, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- The redirect needs to be deleted. Ruslik (talk) 20:03, 17 November 2024 (UTC)

- Thank you! Is applying to delete the CC0 files and uploading them under CC later permissible? UPF official (talk) 15:38, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- @UPF official:
- A technical answer: In your contributions, it can be seen that you already used the tool VisualFileChange for something. It can be used for that type of task. If you have not removed that tool from your preferences, it should still be available from the link "Perform batch task".
- A policy answer: However, the specific task you want to perform is not conform to Commons practice, except in very special circumstances. If, as you say, the photos are truly your photos, i.e. you personally were the owner of their copyright, then once you have dedicated them to the public domain with the CC0 dedication and thus abandoned your copyright on them, then you cannot remove them from the public domain to reprivatize them for yourself. That is also true if the UPF as an organization was the owner of the copyright and you used the discretion comprised in your UPF mandate when you validly decided the status of the files and applied the CC0 dedication. There might be two exceptions to that.
- Firstly, if the uploads are very recent, like less than one week ago, then Commons might consider that you made a mistake and allow the change of status. Commons normally allows contributors to request deletion of very recent uploads, so that could be the same for a change of status. It can be more disputable when the contributor dedicated the photo to the public domain than when the contributor retained the copyright, but there is a chance that administrators will accept if you ask them. Also, this could be a rare case where it might be preferable to actually request the deletion of the files and reupload them later with the correct status tag, to avoid the possibilty that in some months or years, someone will look at the page history and say that the status was changed in contravention of the Commons policy and then bring back the CC0 tag.
- Secondly, if the copyright was owned by UPF and, at the time when you uploaded those particular photos, if your UPF mandate did not give you discretion and explicitly restricted you to use the specific license CC BY-SA 4.0 only, then when you applied CC0 instead of CC BY-SA 4.0 you might have violated your UPF mandate. That could cause a difficult situation because for the public you appear to be an official representative of UPF and the public has no way to know when you violate your mandate or when you do not violate it. From the point of view of the public, the photos were validly dedicated CC0 to the public domain by UPF, through someone officially designated to represent UPF. The violation of your mandate would be an internal matter between the UPF and you personally. It should not affect the rights granted to the public. The UPF may have to respect the CC0 explicitly granted to the public by you as the official representative of UPF. If UPF is not happy with that, it might seek compensation from you. But it is possible that Commons could try to help you extricate yourself from that situation. If there is evidence that your UPF mandate absolutely did not allow you to apply CC0, Commons might consider to allow the change to CC BY-SA 4.0, in particular if the uploads are relatively recent. In theory, that could still be challenged by someone from the public, but Commons might consider that the risk of that is sufficiently insignificant and that nobody will care. That would have to be decided by the administrators, not here in the help desk.
- An answer to a question you did not ask: You can not place yourself the official VRT template "PermissionTicket" on your files and you can not sign them with the name of a VRT agent. IMO, you should remove ASAP all such tags that you placed. What you can do, I guess, is to place the template "VRT info" on the files. And/or you can ask a VRT agent to place an official VRT template on your user page, if the contents of the ticket is to identify your account as a representative of UPF, not only a permission for specific files.
- -- Asclepias (talk) 16:18, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! This is very helpful! We will fix the template. We will sort out the licenses. This is very instructional. You made my day, Asclepias. And, I had to read it a few times before it came home. UPF official (talk) 16:46, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

Batch overwriting files
[edit]Hello. I am certain that this question has been asked numerous times before, and I have attempted to search through the archives for responses. I am planning to overwrite some Irish route number signs. I've seen here that the Upload Wizard does not allow for batch overwriting, and Special:Upload only lets you upload one file at a time. Answers I found in the help archives mostly relate to scripiting, which I must admit I have no knowledge in. Are there other options or will I simply need to overwrite them manually? Thanks in advance. EthanL13 | talk 23:55, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

- @Corendonairlinestr: there is never a reason to delete an accurate historic logo from Commons. We are not concerned only with the present day.
- You are welcome to upload your current logo. If it is eligible for copyright (i.e. above the [[COM:TOO|threshold of originality for your country), though, you would need to grant a free license to have Commons host it. I take it you are an authorized representative of the airline, and I presume that the airline owns any relevant copyright, so you could go through the process described at COM:VRT to grant that license. - Jmabel ! talk 22:48, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
Auto-updating of WR rankings each week at set time - Is this possible?
[edit]Hi,
Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask but I find this site just utterly baffling.
The table below is a great resource. However the updating of it is fitful at best. World Rugby Rankings update each and every Monday. However, this table can update at various times. For instance, at time of writing, it's c.10AM GMT on Tues and the figures have not yet updated for this week.
So my question is, can the population of this table each week with a new row not be automated with a script, importing data at a fixed time each week from World Rugby? As I say, I feel like someone fumbling around in a dark room looking for a light switch on this site, so if there's anyone in a better position to advise, I'd be most grateful.

- @Gpkp, if its the emblazonment from the grant of arms I think those are normally painted, not digital vectors (I can't find a Lord Lyon page on this, but here's the equivalent for the collage of arms). I don't know of any other situation where an armiger has wanted to donate a professionally emblazoned arms (which is why we tend to make our own amateur versions), so I don't know how the copyright would work there.
- @EAnnB, is the copyright on the paintings on the Grant of arms owned by the armiger or by the Lyon Court. In either case, I recommend you or Michael Forsyth read Volunteer Response Team which outlines a process that may be needed to prove you have the right to release this under a free licence. - In Japan, if the artwork is held by a museum, permission may be required from the museum, and in such cases, there may be a fee involved. Ksushinji (talk) 02:10, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

- That would be a non-copyright restriction. Commons doesn't concern itself much with those, but as a reuser that could be an issue you would have to look into. - Jmabel ! talk 07:51, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- (Edit conflict) @Koavf: I do not understand why you were addressing me, as I did not wrote anything about "wikipedia-only" statements. I think that I only reworded the content that you already had in your response.
- @Persian Meowth: Your description currently sounds a lot like a clause similar to {{Attribution}}. The requirement of usage only to shed positive light on Croatia may be a non-copyright restriction, but now, we're delving quite deep into these matters, where laypersons as most of us would be reaching their knowledge limits (further reading: Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Croatia). Hence, I strongly advise to precautionally avoid any such upload. Make Images Easier to Find/Search
[edit]Hello, I uploaded graphics we had been working on related to Trusted AI research that we want anyone to be able to use and modify. After 6 months the search for "trusted AI" still does not return the image even though the caption is "Trusted AI lifecycle". I can only find it if I search for Trusted AI TAI... I think this only works because TAI is in the filename. I just added structured data indicating that this is related to AI. Any other pointers on how I can help make this accessible to more people?

Inquiry About Using ID Photographs for Historical Memory Project
[edit]Dear Wikimedia Commons Help Desk,
I am working on a historical memory project focused on the victims of extrajudicial executions in Colombia. The project aims to display a list in Wikipedia documenting these cases, and I would like to include ID photographs of the victims. Many of these images are available online through mass media outlets and are widely used to document the case, but I do not have the licenses to use them. Given that these images are ID photographs and the project addresses significant issues concerning human rights violations, is there any exception or specific process I can follow to upload these images to Wikimedia Commons? I want to ensure that everything complies with Wikimedia Commons policies. Thank you for your guidance on this matter.
Best regards,
AmiGueko (talk) 02:36, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi AmiGueko. You're sort of asking about two separate questions: whether such content can be uploaded to Commons and whether such a list can be added to Wikipedia. These things are certainly related, but they're different in some important ways. Wikimedia Commons is mainly concerned about the copyright status of the content it hosts (i.e. the photos who want to upload); it's not really concerned with how the content is used by the various Wikipedia projects. So, whether such content can be uploaded to Commons depends upon whether it's licensed in a way that satisfies Commons:Licensing. Since you don't seem to be claiming them as your own images and you state you don't have the licensing to use them, they most likely can't be uploaded to Commons without obtaining the Commons:Consent or their respective copyright holders or or are otherwise considered to be within the Commons:Public domain. One other thing to consider is that copyright law can very quite a bit from country to country; so, in order for something to be OK for Commons, it needs to be OK under the copyright law of the US (where the Commons servers are located) and also OK under the copyright law of the country of first publication. Since you mentioned Colombia in your post, there is some information about Colombia's copyright law found at Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Colombia. As tor whether such a list can be added to one of the Wikipedia projects, that's more of a question that needs to be asked over at that particular project. In the case of English Wikipedia, you can ask at en:Wikipedia:Help desk or en:Wikipedia:Teahouse. There should also be similar help desks for the various other language Wikipedias. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:16, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response, I'll check what I can do.
- All best

Gameplay
[edit]So I want to add a few images of gameplay for a game or two. Is it allowed (like does it go against the uploading guidelines?) to upload this?
Thanks, Lightningtx99 (talk) 04:18, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Lightningtx99. I believe this is covered in Commons:Screenshots. Basically, it depends upon the copyright status of the source of the images. If, for example, you want to take some screenshots of some kind of computer game, Commons can only host the screenshots if the computer game itself is released under a copyright license that meets Commons:Licensing. It matters not whether you can freely play the game online or whether you purchased a copy of the game, the game itself (included in-game audio and in-game graphics) needs to be released under a copyright license that's OK for Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:57, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
Wikipedia Commons Copyright explanation help
[edit]Hello everyone, I am looking to upload images that are not mine and need help with copyright. Terms of conditions from the owner say: "Copyright © 2008-2024 Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Croatia. All rights reserved. Content from this site may be transmitted without special permission provided the source is acknowledged." Now im interested if I am free to upload and if I am, under which license? Thanks to whoever helps. Persian Meowth Persian Meowth (talk) 10:13, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- You are not. Even if Croatia said it were licensed just to upload here to Commons, it would need to be licensed in such a way that it could be shared further and not just on this site. See COM:LICENSE. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 10:15, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- And in terms of images that originate from Flickr? Do the terms of use of the site allow it to be shared further? Persian Meowth (talk) 10:52, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- There's no permission to any further dissemination. The issue is the statement "All rights reserved", as Commons needs the permission for commercial utilization. Even if the legitimate copyright holder is using Flickr services for hosting his images, you cannot take them from there for an upload here. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 10:57, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you all for clarification. Persian Meowth (talk) 11:00, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Grand-Duc, please re-read what I wrote: there are times when someone says "Yeah you can use this on Wikipedia only" or somesuch. I'm pointing out how those kinds of clauses are unacceptable. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 11:23, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Now, Im hoping im not adding complication to the problem lol. I called the author of the images that i wish to upload and they told me i am free to use the images in any way i wish as long it is in positive light of the Croatian Armed Forces and as long the source is mentioned. Furthermore, regarding the license they said to me "Content from this site may be transmitted without special permission provided the source is acknowledged" should be the basis of free use for whatever purpose as it implies that the content is uploaded for everyone to use as long as it meets the criteria of naming the source. Now this all sounds great, but I am worried because, with all this aside, content is technically under the copyright. So, how am I able to avoid it even after i had received confirmation to use the content in whichever use i might want? P.S. sorry for the long reply Persian Meowth (talk) 12:48, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- It is okay to upload copyrighted material here, it just needs to be licensed in a way that is compatible with COM:LICENSE. The easiest way to do that is have whomever owns the copyright license it {{CC BY 4.0}}. Unfortunately for this government ministry, there is no clause that allows the media to only be used in a positive manner for Croatia. This kind of requirement is not something that we can ensure, so as long as the copyright owner insists on that clause, we could not accept that media here. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 12:54, 21 November 2024 (UTC)

Incorrect information on file pages
[edit]Hello all, just wondering what the policy is surrounding files uploaded with incorrect information e.g. descriptions. A particular example came to my attention at File:Aldhelm.malmesbury.arp.jpg; the image description says it is of a window in Malmesbury Abbey but this is incorrect, it is actually from St Aldhelm's Church in Malmesbury. There are a few sources confirming this, such as the websites for both churches. Is it acceptable to change the incorrect information that the uploader provided in light of opposing information? Vesuvio14 (talk) 12:24, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Vesuvio14: Hello, Yes, you can correct the information if you are certain that your information is correct, but in the case of this particular example it may be better to explain the problem on the talk page of the uploader and let them correct it if they agree with you. - Is this a photo you took yourself, or a photo someone else took? In the first case, you can choose a license, in the second case you need to use the license that the photographer chose. The license needs to be free. See COM:L for details on what that means. --rimshottalk 17:01, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
Regarding PD pictures and higher resolution. Essentially another National Portrait Gallery situation
[edit]Given the Asian News International thing on enwiki, I'm a bit concerned about doing anything that might cause litigation against me. With that being said, there's a UK-based organization with a large volume of public domain images. Low-res copies (e.g. 600x800) are on Commons, but it's possible to rip larger images from their website using a tool. I'm not much of a programer, but I do have a moderately complete list of the ~70,000 images on Commons. Is there a procedure for doing this sort of thing? Cheers! JayCubby (talk) 16:14, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- IF the images are PD, what litigation might be brought against you? Since the NPG farce, the case known as "THJ v. Sheridan, 2023" has clarified that there is no copyright in reproductions of PD images. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:35, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

[edit]I want to upload an image of a protein. I retrieved the file from PDB and edited myself to be different from how the researchers have it illustrated. Additionally, I took a zoomed in photo of 2 amino acid residues on the same protein that are coloured differently. I have also included the PDB ID and AlphaFold ID on the images and have added a text title to both images. Am I able to upload this?
PDB ID: 8shs AbsolureUnit (talk) 06:24, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- I presume PDB means World Wide Protein Data Bank [4]. The website has a clear copyright notice at the bottom of the front page. If the original file is not free licensed, your edited version cannot be free licensed either (see Derivative work), so is not suitable for Wikimedia Commons, which is for fre licensed media only. Restrictions on self-produced pictures of unreleased articles
[edit]Hi, I have in my possession several unreleased smartphones variants that are of the same model to phones widely available on the market. Without written consent from the manufacturer for releasing picture of the device, and not considering any legal issues I would personally have to face in my jurisdiction (which is different from the origin country of the handset), does Wikimedia accept images of such items? Thank you. TipzTeam (talk) 10:11, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- @TipzTeam: Hi, A smartphone is an utilitarian device, so there is no copyright. When you take a picture of them, please be sure that the screen is off or blanked. There may be trademark issues, but on Commons, we only add a template {{Trademark}} when this is the case. Yann (talk) 10:31, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Or: open a public domain image (e.g. from NASA or another US government agency) in your smartphone browser. This would also cause no problems here, especially if you load the image in fullscreen mode. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 10:35, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, I thought some restrictions would apply with devices that were not released, the reply is surely helpful. TipzTeam (talk) 11:17, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

I need to update a logo on our company website
[edit]Hi, we just rebranded and I've been asked to update our Wikipedia page logo. Can I do that from my personal Wikipedia account or do I need any additional permissions? Any help you can give me would be great! RichW1982 (talk) 15:21, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- You may upload the new logo as a new image using your personal Wikipedia account, if so you wish. You should, however, then the company should send to permissions @ wikimedia.org a text like the one on Commons:Email_templates from an official account, to formally state that the company is licensing the logo under a free license (Wikimedia Commons only accepts images under a free license). Otherwise, it might be assumed that you were not authorized to do so. Beware: the company may actually not want to have a free license on their logo, I encourage you to make sure that the decision on whether to do that or not is taken by whoever has the right authority for that in the company. Category:Burley House
[edit]We have a Category, Burley House. This matches nicely with the article we now have on Wikipedia, Burley House. But, for reasons I don't understand, the title above the infobox on the right-hand side is still calling it "Burley-on-the-Hill Mansion". This is a silly title. We don't, generally, call any house in England a "mansion", it's an Americanism. Pevsner calls it Burley House, and so does Historic England. I acknowledge that it is sometimes called "Burley-on-the-Hill House", but never "mansion". I can see no way to edit it. Is it possible to get it changed? Many thanks in advance.
