Unprotect Template:YouTube CC-BY/i18n

This template now uses the Translate extension, which means that any changes to the /i18n page only go live once a translation administrator accepts them. I think we can trust translation administrators that they won’t accept vandalism or legally incorrect edits. Could someone please remove the page protection so that anyone can propose changes by directly editing the page? Thanks in advance! And so what? The point of the wiki method is that it’s okay for the page history to get polluted by vandals if it also allows constructive edits to go through more quickly and easily.

And the template will hardly need any editing, see history, talk page, only translation edit requests.

The page history doesn’t mean much: it not being edited can also be because no one bothers with doing or fulfilling edit requests. For the talk page, the real one is at Template talk:YouTube CC-BY, which contains at least one topic that waits for someone to draft a change. Also, “hardly any” editing is more than what’s currently possible for regular users.

This system would be okay in case minor changes but if someone makes a trival change, how will translation admins handle it? They will have to move to talk page to discuss it with others, puts unnecessary work and confusion on tadmins. Therefore the change should be discussed on talk first, will be implemented by template editor or admin only after consensus.

Worst case, the edit needs to be reverted and brought up on the talk page. Even in this worst case, there is a concrete diff to be discussed rather than just some description of what one would like to see. Protection is appropriate in two cases:
  • If vandalism would become immediately very highly visible (main page, parts of templates used all over the place that directly affect the English-language output). Thanks to the Translate extension, this isn’t the case here.
  • To stop actual, demonstrable vandalism, using the lowest protection level that is enough to stop the vandalism. Since this template has been fully/template-protected since 2016, no vandalism can be demonstrated and thus we should assume good faith, i.e. that people won’t vandalize it.

With respect, I disagree. We have template sandboxes for experiments, one can propose changes by linking to it, main template pages shouldn't be edited directly. Here, the page will have to be marked for translation everytime, even after reverting vandal edits. And it's not a job of translation administrators to decide what should be on a template, they work on making a template translatable, like putting translation tags, tweaking, etc... -- CptViraj (talk) 07:29, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
Unprotecting the page doesn’t mean that any changes should be done directly there – they can, for example minor and uncontroversial ones. And if a translation admin is uncomfortable accepting the change, they don’t have to (or can decide to revert it, asking the user to discuss on the talk page). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 10:46, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Again, that's not a job of tadmins, their job is to prepare/maintain translation side, decide on translation tags, system, etc... If we start implementing this system on every translatable template – it is implemented on most translatable templates. As the default is (and should be) that pages are not protected, most translatable templates are not protected either. To be exact, out of the 628 translatable templates, only 51 (or 8%) are indefinitely protected at any level. 21 of these protections are semi-protections, and only the other 30 (or 5%) are template editor protections (there are no fully protected translatable templates). While I don’t think any protection is necessary – as the wiki principle is that it should be easy to fix mistakes, not hard to commit them –, changing the protection to semi would be an acceptable compromise for me. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 10:39, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the list, as you can see, the unprotected ones are lower-transclusion templates, while those with medium number of transclusions are semi-protected, and those with higher transclusions like this one are template-protected. The wiki principal has exceptions, otherwise we wouldn't have protections in the first place. Here, the main thing is we have template sandboxes, talkpages, etc for proposing changes, you just don't edit a highly transcluded page directly for proposing changes, and as I said above, if we allow that, the authority will shift towards tadmins in these translatable templates, which is fundamentally wrong. I understand your position, and I know I might be sounding bureaucratic here, but trust me, I'm not bolstering up any bureaucracy, I'm just standing with the already running practices and what I believe is beneficial. You are free to ask any other admin(s) to decide if you want, but count me in oppose for unprotection and neutral (compromised) on downgrading. -- CptViraj (talk) 17:34, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

They just recently uploaded new ones (all vastly different in style, making it even more obvious that it's not own work) too under "own work" one of them I found on deviantart. The two others I haven't been able to trace so far, probably from some forum. Also, I don't think Mahmud ale has ever communicated in Commons nor the English Wiki, where the vast majority of their edits are attempts at adding these uploaded images. @Jeff G. and Taivo: Unfortunately, this is a fatal error in the settings, that the cascade protection does not only protect the image, but also the description page of the image. So if one single language version of Wikipedia puts an image on the main page, it is not possible to correct description errors, refine the description or categorize. This cascade blocking of text pages should be disabled. While the fact that the French Wikipedia had a complete mistake and mystification in the news that is displayed on the main page and on about a hundred other pages, no one addressed it half a day after the notification. --ŠJů (talk) 15:51, 23 December 2023 (UTC)

I don't speak all languages, but they seem to be low-quality translations from the English subtitles.

This video File:Charge - Blender Open Movie-full movie.webm, for example, has the on-screen text translation for "Guard" as "Subscribe if you are a guard" in the French subtitles. And this video File:Glass Half - Blender Open Movie-full movie.webm is translated from gibberish, the only spoken language in the video, to other languages. In this case, it can be useful to translate the spelling (or script), the [sound effects], and some English words (such as "no"), but this kind of translation can't be done by a robot.

There are some style changes that one wouldn't expect from automated translations (such as changing what the speaker IDs and sound effects are surrounded with from brackets to other symbols), so I'd feel more comfortable if someone proficient in one of the languages that have been translated to verifies that they're low quality, machine translated, or both.


The English subtitles are fine, though.

These accounts are being used to evade a global lock applied to the master's prior accounts.

Both the account and IP have been blocked on enwiki due to being socks of the master Lostonmyway. See the most recent SPI here.

Hello, I am a long time contributor (w:user:Gwillhickers). I was right in the middle of an editing session on English Wikipedia (main) when I got an IP Address blocked notice. When I attempted to bring this to the attention at the Help Desk there I still got the IP Blocked message. Ironically, I am able to make edits here at Commons, which is why I'm posting this message here. I realize that my IP address has been blocked at Wikipedia main for some time ( I use a cell phone hot spot), but I have always been able to log on and edit under my user name. Okay, the problem has disappeared. I logged off, wen}}t off line, and closed my browser (Firefox).  Not done I'm not seeing a pattern of copyright violations here. Most of their deleted files are flags that were either zapped as duplicates or uploader request. When their uploads are deleted as copyright violations, it's almost always because someone else uploaded the flag, and then Sangjinhwa cleaned up the SVG code. I have an unusual request regarding the User talk:Donald Trung page, if it can be protected one way or another again the gigantic own activity by User Donald trung, which makes it practically impossible to communicate and to get an idea about his interaction with other users, and visa versa.

I tried to start a discussion four months ago, in which I felt so gaslighted that I never dared to try again. But now there are things I would like to discuss with him, and want to be able for others to join. The last time he removed the discussion within a day. Next in the wiki text editor I noticed I could not find how to communicate with him, because all the text space was occupied by an illustration. When I showed him a screenshot from how it looks at my Flickr account, he immediately archived that screenshot on Archive org. After he agreed to adapt he added a thread to its talk page that anybody would be fined 25 dollars or so if they didn;t get to the point right away. Now Donald Trung has a signature with a subscript "No fake news", while all of those thing seem to be exactly that.

Normally the talk page it a place where the user has some more control, but with all of those actions, it is practically impossible to focus. I hope with this request, there can be a simple solution here, which at the moment I don't see. Thank you. -- Mdd (talk) 20:56, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

After I try to trace back its history looking at 5.000 edits at a time, there where 25.000 edits by the time I reached 2019. Then I noticed there seem to be en endless listing of subpages as well, see here. Here seem to be a maze of contributions, maybe trying to mask anything or keep us busy wondering. Also an odd accusation that I've "smuggled" my work onto the Wikimedia Commons and that I have a "twisted view of Rotterdam", I just try to document the world around me and create educational content that others are free to use. When it comes to uploading images of posters I always take great care to avoid complicated designs and copyrighted aspects. The images of mine you recently nominated for deletion are another good example of this, these images are clearly below the TOO and only contain short and generic messages but together form a series of St. Valentine's day messages that the people of Rotterdam wanted to share in 2021. There was a previous attempt at semi-protection but if I understand the log correctly, it expired the same minute it was applied. Previous attempts at reverting vandalism have been ineffective since daisy-chained vandalism (this edit, followed by this edit) resulted in only the second edit being reverted.

If this to me seemingly compliant action was the wrong one, you should really consider to make the deletion request procedure less counterintuitive. He who sets a trap will capture animals.

I'd say it's worth checking for sleepers. Per private checkuserwiki details, especially those about specific software and camera type usage, is worth looking further into this problem per user edits. They claim to represent the player and have left a comment saying, "We manage every marketing asset and photograph Georgi Kinkladze owns! We are partners with Manchester City and we have the rights to everything with Georgi Kinkladze's name," which appears to be demonstrably untrue, as they're mostly, if not all, photographs that are owned and managed by news photo agencies and often marked "editorial use only." Looking at the user's edit history on en-wiki, their main gripe seems to be that they don't like the current article photo.

However, they keep inserting photographs that they clearly do not own the rights to and I don't see any evidence that they actually represent the player (surely they could provide a current photo or an older photo from the player's personal archives?), so I don't see them stopping this behavior unless they're blocked. Hello, I am requesting that “File:Emblem of Afghanistan (1974-1978).svg” is unprotected and reverted back to the original version as me and Fry1989 have come to a compromise and have agreed that both aspects of each rendition of the emblem can be combined to make a far more accurate version. I have already created the new rendition for the emblem, and the edit warring has ceased thanks to Fry1989’s idea and my persistence in reverting the emblem.

Firstly, here are proofs that the current rendition of the emblem is inaccurate (if you do need to know):

1. The YouTube “Sardar Mohammed Dawood khan 1974” by Pamir Studio Tv, mark 10:55, depicts the emblem physically near the clock tower of the Arg Presidential Palace in Afghanistan. However, I proceeded to make a YouTube in which I compare both renditions of the eagle to an actual eagle in three different Afghan government books, where I politely explained the inaccuracies. However, one thing that is good about the new rendition of the emblem is that the text is more accurate, therefore I created a version which combines the eagle from the old rendition and the text from the new rendition. That way, both opposers and those who are in favour of keeping the emblem the way it is are both appeased.

The dispute here is which version is better constructed vs which is more accurate. It is my belief that the version by Turtle-bienhoa is undeniably superior in its construction. It was redrawn top-to-bottom. The text is legible, the elements are symmetrical, lines are straight, there's no distortions; it's simply better. The two other users are more focused on the shape is certain elements, in particular the head and beak of the eagle. I have indeed attempted to make some sort of compromise, but beyond that I don't have anything that is worth adding to the conversation than has already been said. The text in Turtle’s version is far better, I do agree with you as the “ت” letter is far more legible in the word “Jamhouriyat (Republic)”. You are also correct that Turtle’s version is symmetrical. A final compromise can be made with the beak and eagle’s head being altered, however I will add again that I conducted an opacity test which you can find by searching up “ROA7378 Daoud emblem – Wikimedia file comparison” by user “meatiest”. Maybe Turtle’s emblem can be altered, using what can be seen in the video, to make it both accurate but symmetrical, along with the legible text being kept. Unprotect File:Emblem of Vietnam.svg

I'm trying to update this file with a more accurate depiction of the emblem created by @MingoBerlingo as per the talk page on the original file. I cannot do that since the file can only be edited by administrators. We've tried to ask administrators to help update it but to no avail. This effort has been going on for several months. I think the file was portected for administrators only because of an editing conflict almost 15 years ago. Could an admin unprotect the file? Please read MediaWiki:abusefilter-warning-file-overwriting and Commons:Village pump/Proposals/Archive/2023/08#Limit file overwriting to users with autopatrol rights again, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to overwrite. @Jeff G. Hi, I already have autopatrol rights. And if you read the deletion request for that file, the user who originally filed the request eventually said that we should update the file instead of creating a new file, but hasn't formally ended the deletion request yet.
