Autopatrol

[edit]
I'm trying to upload some MP3 files of songs/live performances from a band that releases them on bandcamp without a copyright so people can bootleg them freely. Would it be possible to have my MP3 upload ability enabled? Scu ba (talk) 18:29, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's definitely not part of Commons aims to "bootleg" songs. Additionally, you were blocked for a 2nd time for uploading copyvios last year, and I see from your talk page that you had some copyvios from this year. That is definitely concerning to me. MP3s are also complex as far as copyright because the composition also has to be public domain or explicitly freely licensed in addition to performance and the recording. Abzeronow (talk) 18:39, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
These are explicitly stated as having been released into the public domain by the band themselves. The "bootlegger" is the name of the website that the band runs. To quote the disclaimer on the website: If anyone wants to release these albums, you’re free to do so. Here you’ll find links to audio files and cover art. Feel free to get creative with it if you like - it’s yours. Scu ba (talk) 19:34, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what else I need to do to argue my case here, I would only need autopatrol status for like a month to get these files up. You can check the website here for their release notice if you don't believe me quoting it. above. Scu ba (talk) 22:53, 3 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Commons is not a repository for anyone's music production. Commons is neither your free web host nor a vehicle for promotion. --Achim55 (talk) 11:47, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@David Osipov: You uploaded a copyvio last month, what steps have you taken to avoid copyright problems in the future? Abzeronow (talk) 01:52, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I've found and read the backbone rule of the Wikimedia Commons Commons:Upload/Unknown author or license . So that if I don't know the author and can't tell for sure whether the artistic work is in public domain, I shouldn't upload it to Wikimedia Commons. You can grant me a tempo right as a trial. David Osipov (talk) 07:48, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, a trial sounds like a great idea. Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 08:07, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@David Osipov would you like to tell us why you need autopatrol? What prompted you to request for this right? That would hopefully ease out things about whether this be given to you now or not. Thank you. ShaanSenguptaTalk 08:38, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I don't need it to continue to photomap as an OSM mapper. I wanted these rights to ease the burden of admins and patrollers for them to concentrate more on vandals and other malware actors - the most relevant problem of OSM and Wikimedia projects. There was a copyvio earlier this year. And folksongs and stories have to be in the public domain as far as your recordings (folksongs definitely being a tricky area as User:Jmabel said recently.) Have you already researched the copyright status of the works you recorded? Abzeronow (talk) 17:19, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I have. Ekpeye folksongs and folk stories have been passed on for ages as oral tradition from parent to child. There are restrictions regarding the recordings which we (community) did. UMASOYE (talk) 17:39, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, I can confirm that Umasoyee is being filtered from uploading MP3s: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:AbuseLog&wpSearchUser=Umasoyee.
I only see one upload of theirs that was ever deleted specifically as a copyvio: File:Ada Omo Daddy.jpg was deleted as a promo poster. Also, File:Etá (Ekpeye wrestling).webm was deleted for lack of license, no idea what the story was on that. Their only other deletion, File:Black Hunter.jpg, was a scope issue (an AI image), and they were quite gracious about it when someone said it was out of scope. That's out of 100+ uploads, the rest of which look good offhand.
@Umasoyee: can you explain a little better about the copyright status on the material you want to upload? I presume that the material is old enough to not have copyright issues, but could you confirm that? Are you the videographer? Have the performers signed some sort of release covering their copyrights (because it seems to me that otherwise you can't offer a license for their work)? What license do you intend to offer? I know this may seem like a bit of an interrogation, but the couple of things that got deleted don't fill me with confidence that you fully get the complexity of licensing materials other than simple photographs. I'd like to grant the relevant rights, but there is a very good reason we don't usually let less experienced users upload MP3s, because so many get it wrong.
Please ping me if replying, I don't usually track this page but Abzeronow pulled me into the discussion. - Jmabel ! talk 20:52, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Jmabel: thank you for looking into this.
Concerning my recent upload Etá (Ekpeye Wrestling) that was flagged for lack of license it was due to a technical error on my part, I uploaded that last video via video2commons and had not updated all the fields before hitting publish. When I logged in to commons to update the missing fields. I saw the video had already been flagged for deletion despite making the update.
I have now re-uploaded the video with the license. The case of the poster was a mistake on my part (didn’t have adequate knowledge then) same for the AI image (actually generated by me), it was supposed to be a temporary image to be deleted immediately as I was facilitating a wikicommons training and needed to demonstrate how uploads are done, my bad.
Regarding the MP3 materials which I plan on uploading they are indeed old enough to be in the public domain amd free to use. I am the recorder of the folkstories and songs which I intend to upload. I have the consent of the storytellers to share their work under the creative commons license.
I intend to upload the files under the CC BY SA 4.0 license with the following attribution, “this audio features storytelling by…..”
I hope this answers your question. Thank you for your attention to this matter. UMASOYE (talk) 21:59, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
One common field of my editing are financial articles in German Wikipedia. There I want to update/exchange also grafics saved in Wikimedia Commons, which are used in multiple language Wikipedias. For this I need the right of "autopatrol" because the grafics I want to update are sometimes from other users. For example the file File:Target2%_20graph%_20-%_20%_20ecb%_20data(1).jpg by user Aishapats. The advantage is that I don't have to change the file name in articles of multiple language Wikipedias, where this grafic is already in use. I will always use the grafic of same source/origin, just an updated version in matters of timeline. Thank you. Weapon X (talk) 03:29, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose low edit count + you haven't edited on Commons in years. You can request at COM:OWR in order to update the grafics. Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 08:24, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

AutoWikiBrowser access

[edit]
Dear colleagues. I would like to try using AutoWikiBrowser on my files for typo fixing, category checking, find-replace. I think VisualFileChange will not cover all my needs. Please, grant me access if appropriate. UPF official (talk) 10:44, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose honestly, I'm not sold on the idea of you requesting AutoWikiBrowser access a day after you were granted autopatrolled. There was a lot of issues with your edits when you requested the simplest autopatrol right. On the other hand, AWB is much more complicated and needs to be handled very carefully. In my opinion, you should have waited some time before requesting AWB and getting familiar with the rights you were recently granted. Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 20:24, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for answering, Iwaqarhashmi. Sure. Later is ok, since this is the proper procedure. UPF official (talk) 21:22, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't say that's necessarily the proper procedure. It's more of my personal opinion and definitely one way to do it. I'd like to hear what others think about this too. Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 08:48, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In fact this request is an experiment, Iwaqarhashmi. If you think it is not good I do not push for it. It will take me a while before uploading many more photos to really MASS process. Unable to know closely what AutoWikiBrowser is in practice, hard for me to judge if I need it. Thank you for your time. UPF official (talk) 09:01, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
UPF official: I'm not the one to say if it's good for you or not. I'm just a user like you, trying to help. Ultimately, it's up to the respectful admins to decide if it's something they want to allow. Best of luck to you! Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 09:32, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, pretty much. Please read the patroller guidelines here COM:PATROL. It's mainly for those users who are involved in counter-vandalism work so they can mark the problematic edits of others as patrolled. However, autopatrollers' edits are merely marked as patrolled by default and can upload MP3 files and overwrite files as well. Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 20:13, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For maintenance of the large collections of images donated by of Naturalis Biodiversity center in the Netherlands, once uploaded by Hans Muller in several categories, (see over all Category:Media_donated_by_Naturalis_Biodiversity_Center), as well as for possible future donations, I would like to be able to rename files on behalf of Naturalis, to make meaningful file names consistent with actual attributions, identified species etc. For example I had to change 449 filenames recently due to reattribution. Luckily on November 2nd, Lucas Werkmeister was willing to help me out, but I have to do a second batch. Therefor I would like to be able to do that in bulk myself, without having to burden admins/filemovers with such requests. @Iwaqarhashmi@Abzeronow Thanks, and understandable, so I did a request manually just now, but this request would be applicable for 449 files, how would you like me to request those as well? (while it is not an exact match with a specific category, but an intersection of two categories). Best, AHendriksen-collecties (talk) 14:43, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's a start. I've renamed the file for you, and you'll have to request renames for the other files individually. I know it's a bit of a manual process but you don't have to do all 449 of them, you can start with a few and we'll see how it goes. Best, Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 15:30, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for renaming this file. I'll do a few more, did one just now.
However, the reason for this request is that many more filenames of files in the Category: Media donated by Naturalis Biodiversity Center need to be updated (reason 3) regarding identification of species or attribution, or harmonized (reason 4) or are simply way too long.
