Flags used by the Fram

[edit]

Article(s): Fram (ship), List of Norwegian flags, Nansen's Fram expedition, Amundsen's South Pole expedition, Polheim, List of Antarctic flags

Request
Could somebody please create SVG files for the masthead flags used by the Norwegian polar exploration ship Fram, including:

1) The ship's original masthead flag (consisting of a red pennant with the name "FRAM" in white), used when it was was first launched (1892) and during Fridtjof Nansen's Arctic expedition (1893–1896), as seen within the images provided above.

2) The masthead flag used by the ship during Roald Amundsen's expedition to the South Pole (1910–1912), based on this official replica.

Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 15:37, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s)
Would it be accurate if we named the files "Flag of the Fram (1892–1896)" and "Flag of the Fram (1910–1912)"? Feitidede (talk) 04:35, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Feitidede: I did consider providing similar file titles when I first made this request. The trouble is that I don't know for certain exactly how long the original masthead flag design was used for. Particularly since, in addition to the two expeditions mentioned above, the Fram was also used in another expedition from 1898 to 1902, and I haven't been able to find any indication of whether or not any masthead flag was even employed for that one (whether it be the original design, a different design entirely, or none at all). Hence why I thought it best to go with the currently provided file titles. What do you think? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:27, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
In that case I think the original titles you provided seem more accurate Feitidede☆゚.* 19:43, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

House Flags

[edit]

Article(s): en:Enoch Train, en:Loch Line, en:SS Catalina

Request
Please make a house flags of ths shipping companies.
  1. White Diamond Line, use a slightly darker and subdued red.
  2. Aitken, Lilburn & Co Glasgow Shipping Co.
  3. Aitken, Lilburn & Co General Shipping Co.
  4. Wilmington Transportation Company
  5. Catalina Island Steamship Line

Flags of companies 2 and three can also be seen in this book on pages 108 and 112. In both cases they differ in details from the basic links. The second has an additional dot after the "C" and under the "°". Flag number 3 contains "C°." instead of "Coy". Swiãtopôłk (talk) 17:00, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s)
Do you have any other sources for the first one? I've already made one for the Wilmington Transportation Company. I would also like to see some other references for the 5th flag. Feitidede☆゚.* 13:44, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I know a painting of this company's ship, Chariot of Fame (1853) [1]Swiãtopôłk (talk) 15:02, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I just wanted to make sure the white diamond was supposed to be completely inside the red flag and not touching it's borders. On the original FOTW source the diamond appear much smaller [2], however on the painting it appears much larger. I think the FOTW version should be an accurate size. Feitidede☆゚.* 19:57, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The version where the white shape does not touch the edge seems more intuitive to me, but we will probably never know for sure and both variants could probably be correct in the case of such an old company. Swiãtopôłk (talk) 21:54, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

File:Euro exchange rate to RUB.svg

There definitely is an update needed. The original source of the data stopped providing new exchange rates (in fact stopped trading the currency altogether), so we need a replacement based on a different source. --Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 01:46, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Giftzwerg 88 As you have noticed no graphic worker has taken this because we (graphic workers) don't do research to find another source like that. It's up to the requester to provide the needed information. So either add the source you want us to use or please remove this request, thanks. --please ping me--

SVG validation problem... Help please!

Graphist opinion(s)
@100Polar:
Validation is often overly strict. The aria-label attribute is harmless, so I would not fix the validation error.
The SVG 1.1 specification did not include data-* and aria-* labels, so they are marked as validation errors. SVG 1.1 files can use a DTD subset to avoid those errors, but WMF rejects file uploads with such subsets for security reasons. Those attributes were added in the SVG 2.0 specification.
Inkscape inserts the aria-label attribute when it converts an SVG text element to curves. Instead of using a font to draw some text, the SVG now draws the text with curves/path elements (aka path text). The aria-label attribute tells us what the text used to be. If I were to remove the aria-label, then I would first turn the g element containing the path text back into a text element.
At some point, putting version="2.0" on the svg element should make these validation errors go away.

Request
I would like to request the vectorisation of the coats of arms of the city of Hải Dương during the French domination period in the history of the Nguyễn Dynasty.
  •  Addendum, The colour scheme of the Hải Dương municipal coat of arms is consistent as other examples are found here (note that some of the images on the shield are also more visible on it there). I have imported all of these images to the Wikimedia Commons, so here are more general duty (revenue tax) stamps of the French Tonkinese city of Hải-Dương to show more details of the 4 (four) images within the heraldic shield:

Several of the elements found in this coat of arms are similar to the coats of arms of other French Tonkinese cities, for example the mural crown 👑 element is consistent with the Hanoian and Haiphongese coats of arms, though the colour scheme is slightly more intricate.

I would like to request a flag used by the Companhia Geral de Comércio de Pernambuco e Paraíba fleet. There are currently two png files, although one of them contains errors. (First of all, the figure was described as Saint Anthony of Padua, traditionally depicted as a monk holding a boy. The current file appears to show Saint Elmo. Besides, I think it would be better to use a sans serif font.) I leave a drawing of the flag from 1896, which shows a more correct image. Since it is known only from descriptions, it is not necessary to rely on existing images, and it is only important to use the 7-pointed star, the motto, and Saint Anthony. --Swiãtopôłk (talk) 09:35, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A good SVG for translation and technical publications

[edit]

Article(s): s:en:Index:Vacuum Tubes in Wireless-1918.djvu

Request
I have taught myself how to hand over an svg from GIMP to Inkscape and make something that is beautiful and also useful. The xcf contains a path (the ones labeled "fig" have had the alpha/num stripped from them) that needs to be reversed. I imported the picture and the path into Inkscape and proceeded to fill in the missing alpha/num characters in a layer group called "en". The 1/1,000,000 is sad there (and not beautiful). Everything in these files is a guess about what would make a good SVG for others to add to. I would like an actual SVG that is not a guess. There are other similar files in Category:Vacuum Tubes in Wireless (1918, Bucher)--RaboKarbakian (talk) 15:02, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
Unclear what exactly you want to achieve. If you want a mathematically accurate waveform, you should probably write an appropriate function in R and plot it -> save in a vector format like PostScript and import that it into Inkscape (rather than vectorize from a bitmap). Shyamal L. 15:42, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@RaboKarbakian:
You have converted some of the illustration to text elements. Those elements can now be translated with SVG Translate. That is a reasonable and a good step.
This was the thing I was most worried about.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 14:44, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There is other text in the diagram: a plus ("+"), a minus ("−"), and symbol representing the period (which I cannot make out). It would be good if that text were also converted to text elements. That should be a simple operation.
I would not make the 1⁄1000000 second from a "1", a "__________", "1,000,000", and "SEC."; the appearance looks odd and will vary. I would replace it with the single line "1/1,000,000 s", "1⁄1000000 s", or "1 µs".
One of the stated goals of en.wikisource is to reproduce the publication as exactly as possible. After posting this, I wondered if the SVG rendering here was or could be attached to the <math> module, as I could do this so much more easily with LaTeX than with any of the w3c ml. As this was the second biggest reason I dropped this here and if the math module is not able to do this yet; maybe ask for additional help to get this right. Right, being that it looks like the image.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 14:44, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Some more general comments about making SVG files cleaner and more compact.
The diagram was converted from a bitmap. The SVG file still contains that bitmap even though the bitmap is hidden. The bitmap should be deleted; it is no longer required.
I thought to include it to help with translation. You are certain it is not required for this?--RaboKarbakian (talk) 14:44, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If the diagram were used a lot, I would redraw it. The places where the damped sinewave crosses the x axis are muddled. I would draw the axes separately from the damped sinewave. I would draw only one damped sinewave and then clone it to make the other damped sinewaves. I would also draw the dimension lines for the period separately.
I have had problems with remaking images too well at en:s. That the svg doesn't depart to much from the image is the best thing for right now. However, for a math book, where the formula for the curve is right there; this suggestion of yours is exactly what I want to do!--RaboKarbakian (talk) 14:44, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Redrawing a file may not be worth the effort.
Glrx (talk) 19:58, 10 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Glrx Thank you for your time. My biggest frustration was that ugly fraction. Maybe w3c has something that would help; MathML or such? I am going to look it up; but maybe you just know. I also considered a Postscript to svg converter; which also would have been so much better than this crappy font manipulation I put in there.
These need to be:
  • complete
  • easy to work with
  • closely resembling the original
Thanks again!--RaboKarbakian (talk) 14:44, 11 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kaim Amin It would be my understanding that the calligraphy would be ineligible for copyright as it does not pass the threshold of originality in so far as "coming from someone as the originator/author" (insofar as it somehow reflects the author's personality), rather than "never having occurred or existed before".
I'd tag the image with the license {{PD-simple}}. I tried to find a few examples under or its subcategory but these are the best I could find: File:Jamaat e Islami Arabic Calligraphy Text.svg tagged with {{PD-text}}, or File:Sini script.jpg uses {{PD-ineligible}} with {{PD-US}}.
I tried to look up in documentation about calligraphy but only Chinese calligraphy is covered, not Arabic. But it seems Commons:Licensing: Fonts could apply here too? Where fonts/typefaces are not eligible. Thanks -- Waddie96 (talk) 20:12, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Flag and emblem of Damascus

Both files should be modified by moving the Syrian flag above the “Damascus flower” emblem, as seen in this low-quality image. Finally, the red color of the bar on the left (flag colors) should be replaced with green, while the green color of the stars should be replaced with red. (Red: #CE1126; Green: #007A3D) Additionally, a third star should be added in the center between the two (which would need to be realigned accordingly). Only “D” and “G” of “DAMASCUS GOVERNORATE” should be capitalized. Could someone do this?—Yeagvr (talk) 00:37, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Are there any other sources for this change? In this case a new file should be uploaded and the current file should be renamed to indicate it was changed in 2024 Feitidede☆゚.* 20:04, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Flag of the East African Community (2003–2008)

Request
Will someone please create an SVG file of the 2003–2008 version of the East African Community flag? This could be done by placing the 2003–2008 version of the EAC emblem (the difference being that Burundi and Rwanda aren't included on the map like on the current version) in the centre of the current flag. On several pages I discovered a Taegukgi used during the Battle of Fengwudong. It would be nice to make it available as SVG image.
