User:Homolego and persistent copyvio

Most of the uploads of User:Homolego from September 2020 were deleted on the grounds of copyvios and lack of permission. They were blocked for a week for on 2nd February, 2023 for copyvio violations. The same day after their block ended, they resumed uploading evident copyvio images and two of them were since deleted for copyvio.[1][2]. All of the remaining images are obvious copyvio.

Their recent unblock request after being unblocked seems like they still don't understand the policy. Suneye1 (talk) 07:30, 10 February 2023 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: True. When I wrote my first message, I hadn't perceived those as actual warnings, because I was only looking for manually placed warnings. Please revdel the revisions at Commons talk:Licensing from the one at 01:38, 30 January 2023‎ to the one at 13:57, 7 February 2023‎. This is because they contain the text of the OGL 1.0a, which is copyrighted (the license literally says "The text of the Open Gaming License itself is not Open Game Content. While that seems like a rational conclusion, it also seems extremely weird. When redistributing freely-licensed works intact, how do you also distribute an ARR license page? What is the copyright status of Creative Commons and GFDL license text? Are they explicitly carved out somehow, or do we jave a systemic problem on our hands? @Gbawden: If I see this correctly, no technical blocking would be involved for now - as participation in DRs or editing of file description pages except for SDs would still be allowed. Yes. This has to be a warning, not just a request. It would make sense for the wording of the warning to include the words you put in quotes, Gestumblindi: Do not do a and b for the next three months, and if following that, you continue to engage in the behavior that users have complained about in the other thread (x, y and z), a block will be imposed.   • The other discussion hasn't been closed so starting a separate discussion and wanting people to comment here is precisely the wrong way to handle things. There isn't a "general consensus" and coming somewhere new to state that you have one and want another person to close that discussion for you is why you aren't going to get results. A ban on making DRs or SDs does not require a block or protection so why are you here? You aren't proposing blocking him, you aren't proposing protecting any page and since it hasn't been settled, you can't demand someone block him from doing something he hadn't been banned from doing. Do you have any sense of how long it's likely to take for any action to happen? I understand your reaction, but when nothing happens, it's understandable for someone to do something to see if there's a way to get attention to move things along. Any other complaint and he would have topic banned before the first vote was published. In this case the discussion sat there for like a week after there was a clear consensus to topic ban him without any action being taken on it. I think that's a reasonable timeframe to bump the discussion to another venue. Otherwise what would have been the alternative? Letting it just be archived without action when there's a clear consensus to topic ban him? Or conversely we could have just made excessively more off-topic comments just to keep it from being archived. Taking it here as the next step in the process due to the fact that no one wants to deal with it in ANU is clearly the better, if not only, option. The truth is that admins aren't always in the right, but they basically get indirect immunity from blocks and bans of any kind because other admins aren't comfortable in doing so. This is very common on Commons, but it certainly isn't the only wiki that has this issue. SHB2000 (talk) 06:41, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
I can kind of understand it since otherwise a few people with an axe to grind could gang up and get administrators banned just because the admin used their tools in a way they didn't like. Although that can happen anyway and at least in this case another admin supported the topic ban. @SHB2000 You have to remember that EugeneZelenko and any admin have two personas - one as a normal editor and the other as as admin when we pick up the mop and do admin tasks. Being admins doesn't make us any different from non admins - we are not royalty and we are as fallible as any commons user. In this instance none of the edits EugeneZelenko made were as an admin. I do realise this, speaking as an admin on two other WMF projects. What I'm saying is that those who do happen to hold admin privileges are shielded for the actions they do, even if they weren't made as an admin. Also, who is "we"? SHB2000 (talk) 09:02, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
When I saw we I mean administrators - admins don't shield other admins if they have done wrong. My personal view is that the lack of a decision may because some people like myself don't think a sanction is warranted - maybe a rap over the knuckles but I am not convinced that topic banning an experienced editor serves a purpose. (and I had the same view with A1Cafel)
FWIW I have also started DR's for photos claimed as own work that later turned out to be PD (thanks to RAN and others) - its not up to the nominating editor to fix the license - that is the responsibility of the uploader. I would rather he nominate a dodgy file than it remain on commons unchecked. As to the not in use, should be svg if useful complaint - these DR's clean up a lot of the junk logos uploaded by editors who think commons is facebook - once again I would rather have a DR opened than doing nothing. He doesn't do due diligence to check whether a deletion request (or apparently, speedy deletion tag) is valid before making it, and the most important issue is that he has so far at least in my experience utterly refused to admit to any mistakes, or even that he ever makes mistakes. Someone engaging in that kind of behavior on Wikivoyage, where I'm an admin/bureaucrat, surely would have been asked to resign as an admin/bureaucrat, which is a couple of steps beyond what's being asked for in this case. The most important issue is that he has so far at least in my experience utterly refused to admit to any mistakes. Exactly. Administrators more then anyone else should and need to be willing to admit to their mistakes. Since there's a risk of them causing serious due to a lack of competency or forethought. Personally, the only reason I supported the topic ban was because he doubled down on the mistake multiple times and was generally rather dismissive to people's complaints. Otherwise, I'd probably wouldn't have supported it. I can guarantee there wouldn't have been issue if he had of just been reasonable about it from the start, but if someone is going to refuse to acknowledge they made a mistake and continue doing it then what option is there besides some kind of sanction? When I was blocked by Yann recently I didn't even get a chance to explain myself or admit to the mistake. How long has it been since the ANU complaint was started for EugeneZelenko? like a month? How many chances did Ikan Kekek give him to say he'd use better judgment next time? Plenty. This user appears to have made some contributions to the Catalan Wikipedia. I suggest that this be initally handled by the admins of that Wikipedia as there is a possibility that this name is non-offensive in Catalonia. There was an example of this some years ago where a user created an account on the English WIkipedia with the name "XXX Kuntz". When an attempt was made to remove that account, he protested stating that his full name was "XXX YYY Kuntz" ("XXX" and "YYY" withheld for privacy reasons). The user Pedro Renteria (talk · contributions · Statistics) is an LTA which only goal has been the attempt to use the Wikimedia projects as a promotion platform for the Mexican filmmakers, Ricardo Tavera and his venture, Glat Entertainment. The most recent user Cinedata21 (talk · contributions · Statistics) has uploaded in less than a month over 30 production stills to promote those films. The sockpuppets have also used some Wikidata entries as galleries to post all of those stills, as it is the case of Osmoniopreda (talk · contributions · Statistics) who also has uploaded tens of such images, all copyrighted by Glat Entertainment. Requesting long-term protection for Flag of the Delhi Sultanate

I need help to resolve an ongoing hoax about the color of the flag of the Delhi Sultanate (13th-15th century India). Only one historical depiction exists, from the Catalan Atlas of 1375: , as it appears in this plate: : it is grey with a vertical black band ().
BUT, some users have been pushing a green version of the flag [6] for a long time (as you will see in the history of the file) but this is a hoax: the flag is actually grey/greyish as seen from the primary source above (Catalan Atlas), and scholarly sources also describe it a grey/brownish, not green: "....another curious flag found in northern India – a brown or originally sliver flag with a vertical black line – as the flag of the Delhi Sultanate (602-962/1206-1555)." in (2010). You will also see that the Catalan Atlas map has plenty of vivid green otherwise, so it is not a question of green color fading....
I have a sense that this has a potential for a lot of edit warring, for a very long time (see history of the file already). Would it be possible to protect or block the file pages concerned? Altogether, there are three of them: the most used , and two others , .

Non-free image uploads, sockpuppetry, and vandalism by Themoorishh

Kkloppm is an obvious sockpuppet of Themoorishh, being used to re-upload at least one non-free image. Kkloppm uploaded File:Kkpoo.jpg, which is identical to the image previously uploaded by Themoorishh, Mediump.jpg, that was speedily deleted yesterday (no longer visible, but see talk page notice here). The image is taken from the internet (e.g. this older and larger version) and no evidence of Commons-compatible license has been provided, and of course it's incorrectly attributed as "own work".

Kkloppm also made this vandalizing (and racist) edit on another image. (They also edited the image's Wikidata item to vandalize the title here, evidently while logged out.) Themoorishh has already been banned on the English Wikipedia for disruptive editing. They appear to be currently evading that block with logged-out edits, namely these edits ([9], [10]) where the same IP is adding either Mediump.jpg (Themoorishh's upload) or Kkpoo.jpg (Kkloppm's identical upload) to the same article.

Given this behaviour, I don't think that there's any chance they will be editing productively to Commons or any Wikimedia projects. Please block these two accounts. (And I expect they may create more.) R Prazeres (talk) 23:29, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

Not withstanding the edit wars that occurred on the file way back on 2013-2014, the Brazilian official government recently released an extremely detailed update on the design of the Coat of Arms on its website . It's the result of an extensive study based on heraldic conventions and the text of the Law n. 5,700/71. The official design (with the minor correction of the colour of the banderole in the compartment to match the aforementioned law) can already be found on .svg format here and a full explanation of the changes can be found here and here.

i have been working weeks to update the Vermont county election maps with the new standard style accurately depicting Grand Isle but another user is constantly reverting them back to the old style. All of them uploaded content which is out of this project's scope and/or without proper permission. One of them received a final warning months ago [11]. I just realised that they used another account Caodaismview (talk · contribs) (which the enwiki SPI missed because there is no local account [12]). This account also got a final warning [13]. Requesting long-term protection for Flag of the Timurid Empire

I need help to resolve an ongoing hoax about the flag of the Timurid Empire (14th-15th century). There is no historically known flag of the Timurid Empire, and none in the Catalan Atlas of 1375 contrary to what is sometimes claimed here. BUT, some users have been pushing a red pellets on black background version of the flag [15] for a long time (as you will see in the history of the file Flag of the Timurid Empire) but this is a hoax. The only known Timurid dynastic symbol are the "three annulets", as they appear on Timurid coinage: , hence the stylization that had been provided instead [16]. For reference: (2010). "On the Timurid flag". Beiträge zur islamischen Kunst und Archäologie 2: 144, 149.. There is a lot of edit warring going on (see history of the file). However, files may be identified to reusers as ones where information may be updated – these files can and should be overwritten to reflect new information as necessary. (...) A file named "File:Germany location map.svg" is expected to indicate the current boundaries, and is expected to be updated if, for example, the boundaries changed or errors were observed." So a map with false boundaries can, and should be, overwriten: similarly a national flag with a false design can and should be overwritten. According to Wikipedia:Changing username, usernames are global, and are the same on all Wikimedia projects, since 2014, when Wikimedia implemented single user login. So, I can't choose another username for this project only. Any global change of my username will confuse my collaborators in English Wikipedia.

When i created Category:Women wearing red lipstick i was specifically looking for photos of red lipstick itself (not being applied), Men wearing red lipstick and artwork depicting red lipstick to uncheck from Cat-a-Lot. I did not expect a category about makeup to contain photos of non-humans so unfortunately i failed to notice it and thus to uncheck it from Cat-a-Lot.

This file was protected because an edit war had broken out as to whether the redirection in the file should point to version of the United Kingdom flag that has a ratio of length to breadth of 5:3 or 2:1. A request was then put in to delete this file and to require that users explicitly point to the 5:3 or the 2:1 ratio variant as appropriate. The consensus reached in this discussion was

  1. For the sake of consistency, keep the file.
  2. Amend the file to point to the 5:3 variant rather than the 2:1 variant as the 5:3 variant is the variant that is used most widely in Wikimedia projects.
  3. Place a message on this page explaining the rationale for choosing the 5:3 variant above the 2:1 variant. The explanation can be seen here

Yup, this is a huge mess. There's probably 3500+ spam PDFs uploaded between 10:45 and 13:45 UTC, many of them from unique accounts. This is probably going to need technical intervention; it'll be hell to delete manually.
Amusingly, it looks like Soroka223 (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log)  ran a few test uploads - some of which I tagged for deletion! - before running the big batch upload. Omphalographer (talk) 15:24, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
I think it is not really possible to prevent this without affecting other users. Blocking the IP does not help as the user already had to change the IP for every new created account to bypass the account creation limit. For years, I have been railing against incomplete deletion requests, which are caused by‎ malformed use of {{Delete}} templates and lack of follow-through, and which are populating subcats of Category:Incomplete deletion requests‎. This problem spurred the creation of that category 17:57, 1 February 2007‎ (UTC), 16 years ago, and my tracking of it 18:16, 14 November 2020 (UTC), two years ago. As a precedent, ColorfulSmoke was blocked 17:07, 29 December 2020 (UTC) by Mdaniels5757 with an expiration time of 3 days (account creation blocked) for "Continuing to make malformed deletion requests despite repeated instructions; not responding to concerns on talk page", pursuant to the discussion archived at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections/Archive 29#ColorfulSmoke and Alex Neman was blocked 16:30, 27 January 2023 (UTC) by Yann with an expiration time of 1 month (account creation blocked) for "Continuing to make malformed deletion requests despite repeated instructions; not responding to concerns on talk page". B18IDH made this edit 02:14, 14 May 2023‎ (UTC), omitting a section on the subpage, transclusion, and notice to the page creator. I warned the user and reminded them of proper procedures after that edit 11:07, 14 May 2023 (UTC). They made this edit shortly before 11:42, 17 May 2023 (UTC) (with similar problems). I reported such edits in what became Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections/Archive 35#B18IDH 11:42, 17 May 2023 (UTC), to no avail. The user is continuing to make malformed deletion requests despite instructions and warning, is not responding to concerns on user talk page (except an attempt to delete the page 21:51, 25 May 2023‎ (UTC)), is uploading copyvios, and is abusing multiple accounts as below. IP exempt request

Hello,

I've media files on a remote computer hosted at Shadow SAS, a provided specialized in VM with decent GPU, useful for gaming or, more relevant here, for photo or video editing purpose. This is currently my main workstation for multimedia purpose. It's also currently my only non-server non-work computer.

When I tried to upload a media on Commons, I've noticed even a small provider can be taken in wider IP range: 85.190.64.0/19 is currently globally blocked under by meta:User:Jon Kolbert with the rationale Open proxy/Webhost. The block doesn't let the opportunity to add a message on their own talk page, so I'm opening here a section from my work computer. I'm not on another hand not willing to transfer non-work-related documents from my personal remote workstation to my work computer.

As such, I'd kindly like to request local IP exempt.

Note: while administrators are exempt from both such global and local blocks, I'm not administrator on Wikimedia Commons anymore, as I didn't ask for right extension at a previous inactivity round, my contributions pattern at that time not justifying to keep the right.
