- Hi Ronhjones. I don't quite see your point for your request for permission to use a 1878 photograph [1]. This photograph is Public Domain, having been shot in 1878, hence the {{pd-1923}} tag I've used. I've never heard of anything more needed for this kind of very old file, please enlighten me. Would a Pd-Art license be more appropriate?? पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 15:47, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Portrait of Toramana
[edit]With due respect, you are perpetuating a mistake made by the auction house CNG on ONE listing of a coin of Mihirakula where they incorrectly identified it as Toramana. The legend you provide in your description of the image is also incorrect. The legend reads jayatu mihirakula. I know because I can read Brahmi letters and this is also the reading provided in all the reliable sources. Indeed, if you search for Mihirakula on the CNG website, you will find that ALL other coins of that type (which you have uploaded as Toramana) are identified as coins of Mihirakula. There is just the one coin (which you have used) where the cataloger has mistakenly identified the coin as that of Toramana.
For example, take a look at this page from the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna: http://pro.geo.univie.ac.at/projects/khm/coins/coin159?ref=coins The coin is identified as Mihirakula.
If you have access to Klaus Vondrovec: Coinage of the Iranian Huns and their Successors from Bactria to Gandhara (Vienna, 2014), look at page 378, where this type is identified as that of Mihhirakula (Goebl type 310).
Or look at coin 18 in the following paper (published Pankaj Tandon: "Notes on the Evolution of Alchon Coins," Journal of the Oriental Numismatic Society, No. 216, Summer 2013, pp. 24-34.): http://coinindia.com/Alchon.pdf
It is important to correct this as the error is being multiplied and perpetuated. Once you agree, I can provide a coin with the image of Toramana.
As an aside, you have sometimes spelled the name Toranama. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rani nurmai (talk • contribs) 00:53, 23 October 2018 (UTC) Rani nurmai (talk) 01:03, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Rani nurmai: Thank you for your explanation. You are being both friendly and informative, that's commendable. Can you point me again to the coin which you think should be renamed? (just give me a link, so that I can check). पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 12:12, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

Wrong title and caption
[edit]@पाटलिपुत्र: You have extracted this file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sarpol-e_Zahab_Lullibi_relief_Sulaymaniyah_Museum.jpg from this one https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Renovated_Hall_by_the_UNESCO,_The_Sulaymaniyah_Museum.jpg. Apart from the poor quality of the extracted file, you have wrongly described the file and its caption. Read this article about that relief http://etc.ancient.eu/travel/akkadian-rock-relief-belula-pass/. You have provided not only wrong but also misleading information. Please either correct or better delete that file altogether, including its inclusion in this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lullubi. Thank you. Neuroforever (talk) 10:15, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Neuroforever: Hi Neurofever! I agree that the image is not of good quality, and I hope we can oneday find a better image of this relief! In the meantime, this image at least conveys the existence of this relief and the fact that it is displayed in the Sulaymaniyah Museum. I am not sure what you think is wrong with the caption: it is indeed the relief of the Belula Pass, and it is the one in the Sulaymaniyah Museum, and it is Lullubian isn't it? Could you kindly be more specific about what should be changed, or, better, provide me with an alternate caption? I will gladly correct any mistake. Thank you! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 11:35, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Neuroforever: You're right for the image name, I've made a request to change it. Thank you! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 15:45, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Neuroforever: Here is his article on English Wikipedia: Tardunni. Fell free to make corrections! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 20:30, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
- @पाटलिपुत्र: Hi!Thanks for understanding, and of course thank you for the "Tar...dunni" Wiki page. I have made some edits. Regards. Neuroforever (talk) 20:45, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
Extraction
[edit]@पाटलिपुत्र: You have extracted this image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Naram-Sin_Rock_Relief_at_Darband-iGawr_(extracted).jpg from this one https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Naram-Sin_Rock_Relief_at_Darband-iGawr.JPG. It seems that you have cropped and a little bot rotated the image, both of which have distorted the art and the message of the sculpture. The depicted warrior is ascending on a mountainous area, just like steps. In the extracted image, he appears tilted forward and the defeated enemies/corpses are horizontal. In addition, I have not seen any new idea from extracting a new file from the original one; the original one would suffice and conveys the art of the sculpture. Please delete your extration. Thank you. Neuroforever (talk) 10:30, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Neuroforever: Hi Neurofoever. Thank you for your comments, and above all thank you for the quality of your photographs! They are both rare and wonderful! I was under the impression that the original image was very distorted by the strong angle under which the photograph was taken, therefore I tried to correct the perspective according to what I felt was correct (and referred to some images with a lower angle [2], still with some angle though, or this one which gives a good idea of the real perspective and is very close to my correction), in order to make the image both more accurate and more understandable. Of course, if we could have an actual photograph taken frontally, that would be even better. Tell me what you think... Thank you! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 11:27, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Please note that a Public Domain Mark (PDM) on Flickr, is not the same as "cc-zero" and that license should not be used. A PDM signifies that the uploader believes that the image is PD, so a PD template needs to be applied. Flickr shows images that are cc-zero with a proper cc-zero logo - see User:Ronhjones/PDMreply to see symbols. Normally Flickr images with a PDM are deleted, but these are obviously free images, and just need a license change. Ronhjones (Talk) 16:57, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Ronhjones: Thank you! So what should I do? At least I will try to contact the owner of the images at Flickr so that he changes the license to Public Domain Dedication (CCO). Is that OK? पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 17:07, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
- No, no. They are OLD - just change cc-zero to {{PD-old-100-expired}} or a PD-art, etc. Ronhjones (Talk) 17:14, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Ronhjones: The author Gary Todd has taken these photographs recently, so I don't see how we could use {{PD-old-100-expired}}, which would only apply to a very old photograph in my understanding ("the author's life plus 100 years or less"). The object itself is very old, but the photograph is very recent. PD-Art would only apply to a 2-dimensional work. Is there something I don't understand? पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 17:26, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
- You are right and I am wrong. That's life! Can't be correct all the time. Correct - PD-art is for 2D only, back to your original idea of contacting the Flickr user. Ronhjones (Talk) 17:50, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Use of an image
[edit]Ciao, Pataliputra. Thank you for the image Naxos_Sphinx_with_humans_for_size.jpg. I have included it in an article about Buddhist architecture that can be read online. I realize now that I must complete the reference and include the authors of the works you reused in it. And yes, you are right in comparing these two architectural works, a comparison that Ferguson already did in 1849. Best regards. :) --Pompilos (talk) 18:34, 27 November 2019 (UTC)

Warka Vase
[edit]Hi! I refer to your extractions of my images of the different aspects of the Warka Vase. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Warka_vase_(360).jpg&oldid=prev&diff=421561116. Wonderful and wonderful work you have done! I will post it on my Twitter, but I have to credit you as well, as the brilliant photoshopper. How to credit you? On one hand, I'm very happy to see this image. On the other hand, believe me, people will hijack it very soon without crediting or mentioning me or you! Can you please put some sort of clear cut way of using it. It is a CC one. Mine was CC-BY-SA 4.0. Thank you. Regards Neuroforever (talk) 13:34, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Neuroforever: Hi Osama! Thank you very much for the compliment. I changed the license to CC-BY-SA 4.0 (I hadn't noticed the difference). All the credit goes to you of course. You can add a line asking for proper crediting to you if you wish, no problem with that! Tell me if there's anything more I can do! Best regards पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 13:47, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
- No, thanks to you for your wonderful image processing. I will post it on Twitter and mention your username, "पाटलिपुत्र" and page on Wiki. Is that OK? Regards. Neuroforever (talk) 13:50, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Neuroforever: No, no, I really don't need any credit. This is 99.9999999999999% your work only, so please just credit yourself. We are very lucky to have a photographer like you providing so many wonderful images. Best regards पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 13:53, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Correct licensing
[edit]Hi. I am aware that you retracted your edit but I still want to express my thanks to you for giving me the hint to use the PD-Art tag. I inquired with another user and he suggested to me the 'sister tag' PD-scan. Which tag is now more appropriate for old manuscript illustrations published by large public libraries like File:Hexateuch, Cotton MS Claudius B IV, f. 60r.png or File:Luttrell Psalter, Add MS 42130, f. 200r.png (I guess they are using overhead book scanners)? Best wishes Gun Powder Ma (talk) 15:12, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Gun Powder Ma: You're welcome. PD-Scan seems to be acceptable when you are certain the photograph is a scan, otherwise PD-Art might be safer as it covers any kind of photography of ancient 2D objects (and the template specifically mentions the PD-Art legislation as a justification, which PD-Scan doesn't). You will have zero problems if you use PD-Art for your uploads (example: {{PD-Art|1=PD-old-auto|deathyear=1st century BCE|country=India}}). Best regards पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 16:18, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
- I tried it, but unfortunately it does not work wherever where the date of death cannot be specified down to the year — as is the case with most pre-modern manuscript illuminations. When using {{PD-art|PD-old-auto-expired|deathyear=14th century|country=uk}} the sign with the exclamation mark always goes up. Gun Powder Ma (talk) 20:01, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Gun Powder Ma: You're right, I never bothered. This one seems to work OK: {{PD-Art|PD-old-100-1923|deathyear=7th century BCE|country=Sudan}} 20:19, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- I tried it, but unfortunately it does not work wherever where the date of death cannot be specified down to the year — as is the case with most pre-modern manuscript illuminations. This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art. The work of art itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain".
This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details. |

Query?
[edit]Hi! Please I have a question, as you are more expert in this field, I'm sure? I shot this image (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HRH_Tuanku_Abdul_Rahman_Ibni_Al-Marhum_Tuanku_Muhammad._The_Tuanku_Ja%27afar_Royal_Gallery,_Seremban.jpg) in Malaysia of a former and a late ruler. The image was there, displayed within a public gallery of the royal family. I took a pic of it and uplaoded it to Wikicommons. In the description, I was clear in saying where the "original" image was. Someone made an edit and added a copyright license (public) and removed my whole contribution. It is not a scanned image nor an image file given to me by the gallery. I shot it and edit it and then uploaded it. Is that edit by that person acceptable? Thank you. Regards. Neuroforever (talk) 21:18, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Neuroforever: Dear Osama! As a courtesy, the user who corrected your license should have contacted you, but his edit is nonetheless valuable. There are two levels of copyright: first, the original image (the one in the Museum) has to have a free license for you to then claim a free license on it. So it is necessary to show that the original image is public domain, both in Malaysia and in the US. I will add a tag to show that it is also free in the US. Then it is OK for you to claim your own copyright on it (CC 4.0) as the creator of the reproduction, although on Commons faithfull reproductions of public domain images are themselves considered as Public Domain (PD-Art). I'll do the corrections, and please check if this is OK for you. पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 04:56, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for the valuable information! I have no idea about this subject; your answer and edit are quite helpful to me. I have seen the page; thanks for the edit. Thank you once again. Regards. Neuroforever (talk) 10:50, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Copyright status: File:PG 755 Royal Cemetery of Ur.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:PG 755 Royal Cemetery of Ur.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Amarna letters at Vorderasiatisches Museum, Berlin
[edit]Hi! I have uploaded 4 images of the so-called Amarna Letters. All of them are on display at Vorderasiatisches Museum, Berlin. I have created a category for them: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Amarna_letters_at_Vorderasiatisches_Museum,_Berlin . Their description is very brief. I could not find any information about what do they represent or their importance. Please, do you have any information about them? Thank you. Regards. - Thanks a lot, much appreciated. One thing about this image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:One_of_the_Amarna_letters._A_letter_from_Tushratta_king_of_Mitanni_to_the_Egyptian_Pharaoh_Amenhotep_III._Circa_1370_BCE._Akkadian_cuneiform_text._From_Tell_el-Amarna,_Egypt._Vorderasiatisches_Museum,_Berlin.jpg . The description at the Vorderasiatisches Museum says c. 1370 BCE and that would be Amenhotep III's reign. This contradicts what Wiki's article about Tushratta says https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tushratta . Regards. Neuroforever (talk) 11:58, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Warka Vase1.jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Warka Vase1.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Sumero-Akkadian Cuneiform Syllabary
[edit]Hello!
I went through and converted your (quite well designed) cuneiform chart to a .svg. In the process I added in the aleph, changed h to ḫ, and caught a couple of errors (with za, se, and ha). I just thought I'd let you know that it's been updated since a second set of eyes making sure everything is good would be helpful. Thanks for the work on that! You're still listed as the creator of this version, of course, I just got it all into a vector format. Photonsoup (talk) 07:55, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
GODL-India license
[edit]Hi @पाटलिपुत्र: , I am very confused about this license, whether it applies to all govt websites or we have to still comply with the copyright policy mentioned in the site. For Ex: This set of images uploaded by you [3] are using this license but if you see the copyright section of the site it doesn't say they are free for public use.[4]. I have seen other discussions by admins where they have deleted such files. For ex : [5]. Could you clarify if i could use similar images or not? Lord 0f Avernus (talk) 14:26, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- The image i am talking about is this [6] Lord 0f Avernus (talk) 14:26, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Lord 0f Avernus: I know the license seems a bit confusing, and I guess an Indian lawyer will be needed sometime to sort that. However, the photographs in question are the work of the Indian Government, so they should be covered by the license. It seems there is a true intention in India to free up Government images and images from Government sites: for example Modi has ordered all museums and government sites, which privately prohibited photography such as the Sarnath Museum, to now allow photography. पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 15:03, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

- Hi पाटलिपुत्र: Since the uploading of the pictures I took in England last month will take a while, if you want I can share with you a Dropbox or Google Drive access for the folder with my pictures from room 52 of the British Museum, so that you'll be able to pick the pictures that might interest you. In case you're interested, you'll just need to send me a mail address by mail (via the Commons Email feature), so that I can activate the sharing. The pictures of the seals are not that good anyway, since I don't use camera lenses that are precise enough for this type of small objects. Regards, Zunkir (talk) 21:20, 9 September 2022 (UTC)

Kushit exhibition in Louvre museum
[edit]Hello,
You uploaded onto Commons File:Anlamani statue reconstruction, with Egyptian headdress.jpg. But according to the list of names of pharaohs in the exhibition that I found and mentioned in File:Reconstructed statues of the kushit pharaohs 1.jpg, it would be Pharaoh Atlanersa and not Anlamani. What do you think? I myself uploaded a photo of the head File:Tête du pharaon Atlanersa reconstruite en 3D.jpg wearing the pschent. --Tangopaso (talk) 19:22, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for your message User:Tangopaso (and for the interest)! I too had a doubt, based on conflicting information, but the name inscribed on the back of that statue (attached, and you can check the file it is extracted from) is indeed Anlamani [7]. Do you have alternative data, such as Museum Catalogue etc...? Besides, very few statues of Atlanersa are actually known [8], and they are quite different. पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 05:31, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for your answer. No, the only information I have is the list of the pharaohs names that I noticed at the exhibition:
- From left to right: Tanouetamani 1, Atlanersa, Aspelta, Senkamanisken 1, Senkamanisken 2, Tanouetamani 2. The tall statue of Taharqa is at the entrance of the exhibition.
- But on an image by Dominique Artis (I cannot post a link), there is Anlamani as the 2nd pharaoh from left to right. I will change my photo. Thanks for watching. --Tangopaso (talk) 14:54, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

[edit]I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first"). A1Cafel (talk) 14:12, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

However, files may be identified to reusers as ones where information may be updated – these files can and should be overwritten to reflect new information as necessary. (...) A file named "File:Germany location map.svg" is expected to indicate the current boundaries, and is expected to be updated if, for example, the boundaries changed or errors were observed." So a map with false boundaries can, and should be, overwriten: similarly a national flag with a false design can and should be overwritten. पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 18:54, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

Tang dynasty map
[edit]Hello. The file you uploaded appears to have a few errors. The Tang dynasty did not conquer Goguryeo and establish the Andong protectorate until the year 668. The Tang dynasty also controlled Baekje's territory in the year 660 under the Ungjin Commandery, which is not shown on the map, as well as other parts of Northern Vietnam which aren't included. Here's a file currently in use on the page that showcases the time periods of various Tang protectorates. Jimmyshay (talk) 13:39, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Jimmyshay: I tweaked the map. Please check. I left the Andong protectorate, as the map is only "circa 660", which could arguably cover the year 668 as well... Please give me your comments. Thanks पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 05:38, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for your quick response. Sorry for the confusion regarding Vietnam. I wasn't being clear. Annam protectorate wasn't established until 679 and what I meant to say was that the southern most tip of Tang territory that extends into Vietnam was further south than marked in the original map. The main map for the page would give a good idea of the situation there. As for the rest of the map, if it is supposed to show all of the protectorates Tang has ever had then the current map would be more accurate (though there would already be a map of that which I linked to in my previous comment). However if the map is supposed to show Tang protectorates around 660 I believe there would be confusion as some of the central asian territories would be lost in 665, yet the map portrays the Tang as simultaneously controlling those territories and Goguryeo at the same time when it wasn't. This would give an misleading portrayal of how much territory the Tang controlled. If you would like to portray Tang at it's greatest extent with its protectorates (which I believe the wiki needs), I would suggest sticking to the year 660 and including Baekje but discluding Goguryeo, with Northern Vietnam marked the same way as in the main map. Thank you. Jimmyshay (talk) 09:02, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Map of the Yenisei Kyrgyz Khaganate
[edit]Hello. Please correct the map of the Kyrgyz Khaganate. The territory in the west reached the Ural Mountains and included the steppe regions of the south of Western Siberia, bypassing the Kimeks from the north. In addition, in the 9th-10th centuries, the Kyrgyz made a campaign against the Oghuz, reaching the Caspian Sea. Unfortunately, I don’t know English well and will not be able to fully translate Russian sources for you. Please read the article about the Kyrgyz Khaganate in Russian Wikipedia, at the moment it is the only one where it is written in sufficient detail on this topic. I hope for your response. Hi, I saw you cropped this picture from another one, that I took. I think the resolution is low, I would like to see a higher one. That would be possible if you made a new version from the full sized picture that I just uploaded. I am, over the last few years, busy putting more of my pictures in Commons and adding large size ones if I have them, overwriting smaller ones. I do not have the time to start doing this for Ani. But if you let me know which pictures (just a few) you would like to use, sending me the links, I might be able to update just those few. At least we could give it a try, and it would lead to better illustrations. Note you may wish to use pictures that are not by me, those will remain in the current resolution.

[edit]The dates on this image are in an unconventional and ambiguous format, using the minus sign to denote BCE which could be confused with BP (Before Present).
E.g. the date shown as -3000 could be interpreted as 3000 BCE which would be about 5000 years ago. Or it could be interpreted as 3000 BP / 3000 years ago.
Can you please change the minus signed dates to BCE dates?

Categories need parent categories
[edit]Thank you for creating a new category or categories. When creating new categories as you did at Category:Shams al-Dîn Kâshânî, please try to include one or more parent categories:
- All categories should be a subcategory of another category.
- For categories about specific people, this would generally include
[[Category:People by name]]
- See Commons:Categories, especially How to create a new category.
Categories that lack parent categories appear on one of these reports:
Please make sure your categories aren't in these reports by adding categories to them.
Thank you. (This is a standardized talk page message)

Miniatures and manuscripts
[edit]Hi Nous. Regarding this. It seems quite strange to put manuscripts under a category named "Miniatures": a "miniature" only refers to an illustration, not to a complete book or manuscript (a bit like the word "picture", or "painting"). As far as I can see, most of the objects you are placing in "Miniatures" are actually "Manuscripts". Maybe what you mean is "Illuminated manuscripts" (manuscripts with miniatures)? But all manuscripts with a degree of decoration would have to be placed in the "Illuminated manuscripts" category... and the rest would have to be put in a rather awkward "Non-illuminated manuscripts" category. Overall, I feel it's a bit too complex to have all these subdivisions, and it seems to me that a simple "Manuscripts" category (like "Injuid manuscripts", "Jalayirid manuscripts" etc...) should be enough. What do you think? Best पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 20:04, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Yes, it's a little strange. But the problem is, that we have big tree of "persian miniatures by dynasty" categories, and in this jalayerid miniatures, timurid miniatures, ilkhanid miniatures, and so on. So what is the alternative solution? Put every single miniature from, for example, Demotte Shahnama, in category "Ilkhanid miniatures", and than category "Demotte Shahnama" itlself (already with all this miniatures in it) in category "Ilkhanid manuscripts"? Category like "Ilkanid miniatures" will be incomprehensible, complete mess, with all miniatures from different manuscripts together, without any order. And we will have miniatures in these manuscript category both as part of category "Demotte Shahnama", and as miniatures only, when we can do this with one simple move, not two. And another thing - usually there are mostly (sometimes only) miniatures in categories like "Demotte Shahnama" and others, because we are mostly interested in miniatures, not in text. And another thing - category persian miniatures is already part of category "illuminated manuscripts created in Iran". And we dont' need "akward" category "non-illuminated manuscripts". There is simply category "manuscripts". Category "illuminated manuscripts" is subcategory of it. And that's it. So, to put it all together. You want to make some change, with have a tremendous impact to really big tree of categories, made by me and few other users during last few years. Our solution is obviously not perfecy. Your arguments, at least the first one ("It seems quite strange to put manuscripts under a category named "Miniatures") are rational. But your solution is also not perfect, and in my opnion even worse. Probably perfect solution doesn't exist. I hope that I least explain to you why I did my changes and that you will think about some bigger picture, I mean, category tree of all persian manuscripts, by dynasty, century, illuminated and so on. It is little complicated. So that's all from me now. And I have one more request - stop duplicate existing files. Very, very often you put images that already exist, somtimes exactly the same, sometimes of definitely worse quality, so what's the point?--Nous (talk) 11:51, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Nous: . My only major issue is with the naming "Category:xxx miniatures" used as a recipient for xxx illuminated manuscripts, because it is a misnomer (wrong or inaccurate name or designation) and is counter-intuitive ("miniatures" are only an element of "illuminated manuscripts", not the reverse). If you're OK, I suggest we just try to change the name of these "Category:xxx miniatures" to "Category:xxx illuminated manuscripts" in order for the name to properly reflect the content (example: Category:Jalayerid miniatures >>> Category:Jalayerid illuminated manuscripts). Then, we will not have to change the general structure, and I think we will not need categories for "miniatures" only, as, to your point, this would just be a huge bunch of images. What do you think? Your last point: of course, it is not my intention to duplicate, especially if lower quality... you can speedy delete when encoutering such obvious cases. पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 12:30, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- You are right, but problem is much deeper in the category tree. Because it is not a problem with "Jalayerid miniatures", but with "Persian miniatures" (not "Persian illuminated manuscripts"), name that have a long tradition. So let's say that you create [CategoryːJalayerid illuminated manuscripts]. Part of this category will be, of course, Jalayerid illuminated Qur'an manuscripts. Problem is, that they are not Persian miniatures. So if you replace Jalyerid miniatures by Jalayerid illuminated manuscripts [Category:Persian miniatures by dynastic period] make no sense anymore. Not only Jalayerid miniatures, but also Ilkhanid, Timurid, Safavid, Qajar. All of it becomes garbage. You know my opinion. I think that you need to talk with User:Orijentolog and User:LouisAragon. I am not the only one who build this set of categories with Persian miniatures/illuminated manuscripts. And last but not least - you will do what you want, but remember - you need to make changes in all Persian dynasties, not only Jalayerids. And delete or rename [Category:Persian miniatures by dynastic period]. It is very big change, not about small number of manuscripts of minor dynasty but all illuminated Persian manuscripts Nous (talk) 15:57, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- Pinging @Orijentolog: @LouisAragon: Comments welcome पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 16:18, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
- I think renaming "miniatures" categories to "illuminated manuscripts" would mess up the existing category structure, especially the long-established "Persian miniatures" category, which includes miniatures from different dynasties, some of which aren't part of illuminated manuscripts. While the system is complex, it keeps important distinctions between different types of works. I'd prefer to stick with it rather than make changes that could cause confusion and require a lot of adjustments. So yeah, I agree with Nous' rationale. @Nous: @Orijentolog: - LouisAragon (talk) 21:04, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
