Flag of NATO

[edit]

Hi, I found a better file of the flag of NATO on another website. Here is the link. Would you change its background color to #004990 and upload it here? Thanks. NoSeeNoBye (talk) 00:14, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How is it better? Kwamikagami (talk) 00:25, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, there are 2 main reasons. First, the 4 white triangles should each have an angle pointing to the point right in the middle. Second, there is a small imperfection about the upper-left arc. These geometric mistakes need to be fixed. NoSeeNoBye (talk) 02:18, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, done, but I don't see the point of uploading yet another flag. I'll ask about temporarily changing the upload settings. Kwamikagami (talk) 04:35, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Uploaded. Kwamikagami (talk) 18:25, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

LGBT RIGHTS IN DOMINICA

[edit]

Hey Kwami-Kagami☺️, I'm sending you this message to tell you that Dominica legalized sexual relations between people of the same sex (homosexuality) this year. Could you please change it, put Dominica in gray. Thank you very much in advance. Have a nice day☺️. I'm guessing which maps you're talking about. Let me know if I missed one. Kwamikagami (talk) 01:00, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It' great. 92.184.96.202 22:35, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Cifrao symbol change

[edit]
Car for sale in Cape Verde, showing use of the cifrão as decimals separator

Did you have a convincing reason to change file:cifrão symbol.svg (). In almost all cases, the Gentium Book version is illegible at the 15 pixel size used inline (either by hand or, on en.wiki, using template:cifrão), for example 123456. The problem is that the font you have chosen is too heavy. Is there a Gentium Book Light that you can use instead? Otherwise I'm afraid we must revert.

I can see that your version looks a lot better at 100px and up, so if there is no light font, maybe you need to create a new file for that purpose? JMF (talk) 13:01, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We can create a narrow variant that will look better in running text, and use the square img for Wikt etc. info box. (Having consistent widths helps to keep different glyphs uniform in tables etc.) Give me a bit. Kwamikagami (talk) 13:41, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, that looks good on my system. See how you like it.
If it's still too heavy, we can try regular weight. Currently it's in book weight, which looks good at large sizes. Kwamikagami (talk) 13:50, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for engaging on this.
still looks way too heavy to me, and too tall (see 123456), but https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Gentium+Book+Plus/about suggests that a light face exists. If you have already downloaded, can you check it? (My hand-drawn version wasn't great, undeniably amateur, so ignore as an option.) And if you are really keen, a better optical size would be way cool (see https://fonts.google.com/knowledge/choosing_type/choosing_typefaces_that_have_optical_sizes).
The existing predominant usage is in the 12 to 20px range. The large form is used rarely. Surely it would be better to create cifrão symbol (wide).svg for the minority use-cases than having to change the majority to use narrow? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JMF (talk • contribs) 15:10, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(as an aside, on my system at least, the dollar sign in Garamond (123$45) sets the standard we need to achieve. It could be a touch heavier but not much.)--JMF (talk) 15:33, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
'Too heavy' and 'too tall' generally means too big. It looks better to me set to 12 pt rather than 15.
I'll try a lighter weight.
Yeah, the naming could be the other way around. But inline use is mostly via template, AFAICT, so overall changing the file in those might be easier. No biggie either way. Kwamikagami (talk) 21:40, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, lighter weight -- lighter than Garamond, actually, but also with a narrower letter (and slightly narrower than the book weight). Also set it higher in the img space, as it was riding low.
I can change the whitespace on the sides, or the spacing between the two bars, which are independent objects in the SVG and so are trivial to move.
If you want a still lighter weight, or a wider letter at this weight, I'll need to change fonts. Kwamikagami (talk) 22:25, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I uploaded Garamond. For me, the examples where you wrote 'still looks way too heavy to me, and too tall' look just about perfect now. Maybe you could revert in the file history and adjust the sizing in the template to see which of the three works best for you, and if none are satisfactory, we can try something else.
As with the Gentium glyph, the cross bars of the Garamond glyph are independent objects, so it's trivial to adjust their spacing. Kwamikagami (talk) 22:40, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this looks a lot better now and IMO you can continue to roll it out. (I forgot about usages in other projects, so now accept your argument.) The spacing looks fine and yes the baseline correction was much needed, it has always annoyed me. The metrics should be about the same the number 5 (with the bars extending into the ascender and descender areas), so that looks right too.
The 12px/15px decision arose through the legibility issue: as you say, 12 is the better size in running text (matches the digits) but the smudging effect made anything less than 15 unusable. That is no longer such an issue.
Of course we still have the MOS:ACCESS issue: a visitor who needs to set their default font size (for everything) to, say, 48 point will definitely not be able to decipher the little smudge. But, without a Unicode code point, I have no idea how we can respond. I doubt though that it will figure highly on their list of daily frustrations. JMF (talk) 10:09, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It might be less smudgy if I space the bars a bit further apart. Let me know. Kwamikagami (talk) 10:22, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Michoacán abortion

[edit]

The Mexican state of Michoacán decriminalised elective abortion last week (9th October), and the law came into effect 3 days after that. It was already published on Saturday 12th October: https://michoacan.gob.mx/noticias/se-publica-en-periodico-oficial-decreto-que-despenaliza-el-aborto/ Aleqc (talk) 20:11, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Kwamikagami (talk) 00:02, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

San Luis Potosí - abortion map

Another state for the map. 12 weeks too. The reform was published yesterday: https://archive.org/details/decreto-0007-reforma-articulos-148-y-150-adicion-al-articulo-148-y-derogaciones- Aleqc (talk) 23:24, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
