Files uploaded with no license

File:J. e. Franklin.jpg and File:Shauneille Perry and J E Franklin in 1971.webp were uploaded without copyright licenses back at the beginning of this month. I'm not sure whether the uploader realized this and they don't seem to have been notified of this on their user talk page. My guess is that they probably meant well, but just are not very familiar with how Commons work. What should typically be done in a situation like this? Tag the files with npd? Tag as copyvio? Start a DR? The uploader doesn't seem to be claiming these are their "own work" (which would be a questionable claim in my opinion) and has provided attribution for each file, but I doubt either Brown Univeristy or the NYT have released these under a CC license. I guess PD-no notice could be possible, but that also seems unlikely. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:37, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Requesting updating of three upload-protected flags per talk page discussions

Hi,

I was wondering if someone would be able to update File:Flag of Nauru.svg, File:Flag of Somaliland.svg, and File:Flag of Spain.svg per the discussions made on the talk page. The first and last item have replacement files ready as posted in the discussion, and the flag of Somaliland has alternative code written on the talk page. There have been outstanding protected edit requests on these three for a while (the oldest of which dates from late last year), so I figured I would post here per the blurb on Category:Commons protected edit requests. Category move request

Hi, Could someone move Category:Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (NCV 3) buses back to Category:Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (2006) buses please?,

@MB-one had originally moved it and the 2014 model all to one cat which is I disagreed with so the 2014 model has stayed as its own category but this "NCV 3" category is just meaningless and doesn't tell anyone what the model year is. Prior to the move it was only 2006 models anyway,

There is going to be other cats that may need updating but without sounding disrespectful MB-one can fix the mess they've made. Many thanks –Davey2010Talk 21:36, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

How about Mercedes-Benz Sprinter buses (2nd generation)‎? MB-one (talk) 06:54, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

::How about Category:Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (2006) buses ?, Sorry but unless I'm missing something I see no reason why 2006 and 2014 models would need to be in one category ? Also please undelete the 2006 category there's a discussion continuing here so deleting things is out of the question especially by you (because you're involved), Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 10:25, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

@MB-one -Ignore the above reply, I've recreated the 2006 link - 2006 and 2014 have forever been stuck in my head for categorising the images so without sounding like a dick I wasn't prepared to start remembering 2 completely different years for the bus side of it (mainly because I never ever got used to the previous NCV title),
Anyway I'm satisfied so thanks MB-one for tidying things up and for your help, Personally I believe we should get rid of the NCV title altogether but that's another problem for another person - 2006 and 2014 now point to the respective categories so I'm a happy man! :), Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 10:41, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

File upload criteria

First of all, I am not sure that I can question here regarding a common issue that I seen in Commons. See these files.

  • There are over 19400 files so far, and only 1883 (5.02%) of all images are used. Rest of them seems COM:HOST
  • Many of them are duplicates (Eg: 1, 2, 3) and other issues such as poor white balance, poor light, unfocused, etc.

I would like to hear your opinions. ~AntanO4task (talk) 17:43, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

I have not looked at all the files, but I do not think COM:HOST applies, they show clearly some useful objects and can be used educationally. Among my own a dozen of thousands or so uploads I guess also at best 10% are in use on Wikimedia projects, so what? Ymblanter (talk) 18:11, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
Not 10% are in use on Wikimedia projects, but 5.02%. What do you say about similar images as I given above as example? It could be educational use, but there are better images already in Commons. Eg: see this, low light, not well presented and better images are already there. I would recommend admin to instruct him to contribute in better ways.--~AntanO4task (talk) 03:38, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

File:Neyma Portrait copy.jpg

Would an admin mind taking a look at File:Neyma Portrait copy.jpg? It looks like the uploader tried to COM:OVERWRITE the photo with a file of the subject's signature, but then reverted back and reuploaded the signature as a separate file. Category:Delvis Dutton

I think an administrator should take a look at the files in Category:Delvis Dutton. Most of them appear to be uploaded under erroneous claims of "own work" and Georgia doesn't appear to be one of the US states that releases works by state, county and municipal employees under a public domain license. They appear to be mainly screenshots or scans which typically don't generate an "own work" copyright per COM:SCREENSHOT and COM:2D copying; so, it's the copyright of the original work which matters. There might also be other non-copyright related issues (e.g. COM:BLP) as well that might be a problem. For example, File:Delvis Dutton booking report from Bulloch Jail on Dutton website All On Georgia.jpg actually shows two individuals, who apparently are unconnected in anyway other than they photos appeared on the same page of the same website. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:22, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

I'm not sure if I should have more good faith, but I'm under the impression that the user is uploading non-free to use images and manually overriding the metadata to make it seem as if they took the pictures with their phone. See File:Nasiriyah Stadium under construction.jpg, File:Ammo Baba Stadium.jpg or File:Karbala Stadium.jpg, for example. I find it hard to believe that they managed to take aerial-view photos of stadiums, or that they had access to a completely empty stadium. Also, each image has its own resolution (which are all considerably lower than the standard 4032 x 3024 pixels of the iPhone X). Nehme1499 (talk) 14:58, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

They also already have a history of uploading non-FTU images (see Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Kari0t). Nehme1499 (talk) 15:00, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

I deleted these two, and warned this user. Also images such as File:Ibrahim Bayesh.jpg, File:Roderick Miller.jpg and File:Hussein Jabbar.jpg seem to be taken with a telelens, not with a mobile phone, but I can't find the source. I processed your speedy deletion request for File:Karim Saddam.jpg. As you noted, it is a Getty Images rights-controlled photo (to be exact ID #96810230 by Sabah Arar) and the iPhone EXIF metadata is clearly not correct. I suppose it is possible that there is an innocent explanation for the misleading iPhone metadata (theoretically it could have been an iPhone photo of a Getty photo). I also added a notice about this AN discussion to the uploader's discussion page. —RP88 (talk) 21:18, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

@Antandrus: (or someone else knowledgeable) Is this really allowed? – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 18:30, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
If the images are allowed on Commons, and are correctly licensed and all, I guess the question would be whether or not it violated Commons' policies on use of user space. They strike me as trollish and unlikely to be compliant, but I don't really know. Since the account has been inactive since 2009, I think it's highly unlikely anyone would even see these pages. I'd suggest nominating them for deletion, but really it probably doesn't matter. Antandrus (talk) 21:26, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
The userpage has been here for 13 years so IMHO the need for urgency has well and truly past. (of course there are exceptions which per BEANS I wont mention), Nominate for deletion and move on. –Davey2010Talk 21:45, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

Batch deletion request

Would an administrator please delete every file listed at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Leonardodanial? Two files by bad author still pending deletion

Commons:Deletion requests/Files found with insource:94046063, because of User:Ellywa's inaction. RZuo (talk) 14:06, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

@RZuo: No need to accuse anyone. It is indeed not clear these are Flickr washing. Yann (talk) 18:54, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
@Yann: who was accusing who of what?
the files were uploaded by a user who was identified in the bad author list. This means that the Flickr user is known to upload images with possibly problematic license information. The image should be checked carefully because some Flickr users are blacklisted for only a limited portion of their uploads.
Category:Flickr images from bad authors: Admins and reviewers can overrule this and pass the file if a careful check give the admin/reviewer reason to trust that the file is actually free.
did User:Ellywa check the image carefully? was this uploader blacklisted for only a limited portion of their uploads? is the answer yes or no? if yes, what is the reason to believe these two photos are not flickrwashed?
very poor judgement.--RZuo (talk) 07:06, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Overwritten file

Would an admin take a look at File:Михаил Ломтадзе.jpg? It appears to be an overwritten file that may need to be split into three different files? — Marchjuly (talk) 13:31, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

I've made a request for this at COM:HMSR and perhaps it can be resolved there. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:00, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Just want to update that someone responded to the HMSR request and the file was split. Not sure if anything else needs to be done, except possibly requiring VRT verification of each file's licensing. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:58, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Question

Hi, Apologies this doesn't require admin intervention but I believe admins to be more knowledgeable than me,

Currently at Category:Unidentified ALX400 buses in the United Kingdom we have images of buses - some are the main subject (here and here) and then some aren't (here and here)

Should I remove the ones I believe aren't the main subject ?, Do we keep them all in this category ? or should I start an RFC and let the community decide on what images should and shouldn't be in that category?, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 11:53, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Not an easy question! For somebody searching for images showing specifically this kind of bus in whatever environment, the current "inclusive" use/definition of this category is helpful. However, the current number of images in this cat (149) IMO comes close to the amount making the category less usable for average users. Though, from File:Old Coulsdon, Surrey - Placehouse Lane - geograph.org.uk - 2880197.jpg this cat could surely be removed. --Túrelio (talk) 12:17, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi Túrelio, My thoughts are the exact same as yours re environments, As nobody other than yourself has replied I'll go ahead and remove images where the vehicle is barely seen and will keep the close ups or those that I believe should be in that category, I was hoping for more feedback from others but oh well, Thank you for commenting, Warm Regards, –Davey2010Talk 16:45, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
I've removed files and have renamed some to street names, I've also tried looking at the files as either "they can potentially be used for x,y and z" or "it's the main focal point/subject", I've already nominated cropped images within that category so the number will go down but I'm happy with 73 (previously 149!).
As no one's commented here (excep for Turello) for future cases I will do the exact as I did today with other images/categories, Thanks,
Resolved

server-glitch hampering deletions, again

typical error-message
variant of error-message
another typical error-message

Like a few weeks ago, again the obviously same server-glitch is hampering deletions on Commons since yesterday evening hours until now. When trying to perform a speedy-deletion, either directly or within the duplication-deletion script, for every 2nd or 3rd file the process hangs at the step "delete file" and after a while returns a - mostly reproducible - failure-notice, such as shown on the right. In plain text it says "API request failed (backend-fail-internal): An unknown error occurred in storage backend "local-swift-eqiad". at Thu, 25 Aug 2022 06:55:40 GMT served by mw1428"
If the delete-command is subsequently repeated, in most cases it is then performed at the next (or overnext) try, evidence that it is not related to specific files. However, this server-problem at least doubles the work-load of performing file-deletions. --Túrelio (talk) 07:29, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

Unwelcome changes coming from a continually shifting IP address

An anonymous (IP) editor, who continually shifts IP address, has been making numerous recent edits to my photo pages, mostly related to structured data, e.g. this edit. Most of these I'm fine with, but

  1. I do not like the removal of the author field from Information
  2. There are times they have changed Self to something else, which I don't appreciate.
  3. In the Self template (or other templates they are replacing it with) they have variously either entirely removed "author" or changed from "author=Joe Mabel" to "author=". I do not like having to rely on the future of a template to make sure my attribution stays correct.
  4. They have changed Source=Photo by Joe Mabel to source=Self-photographed

To be clear: I've had literally thousands of my photos used outside of the WMF world. When they are used, I am concerned to have them attributed accurately. I am deliberate in putting this information into the page three ways, all being clear about the specific attribution I want. I do not want my photos attributed to, say "Wikimedia Commons user Jmabel" (which could easily happen off of source=Self-photographed). I want someone who fails to look closely at the license to see my name as author.

There have been too many variants of this for me to entirely keep up and revert these changes without reverting their otherwise acceptable work. If this were a logged-in user, I would of course engage with them and ask them to stop messing with my attribution. I've had that come up in the past and it has always been sorted out easily. As it is, I have absolutely no idea how best to proceed. - Jmabel ! talk 04:10, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

See also Lithuanian pushing by user Pofka. --Лобачев Владимир (talk) 07:39, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

On August 20, I uploaded files from an old Roll of arms Armorial Lyncenich, 1430–1440 – 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06. Many coats of arms are signed in Middle Dutch. I found it possible to keep the original names in the filenames. However, some files have been renamed because "they are Russian propaganda". Please cancel this nonsense and return the original names for the files:

Лобачев Владимир (talk) 16:47, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

Above the coat of arms is written "onde von rusen", which is part of the full phrase "[hertoghe von lettouwen] onde von rusen" – Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Ruthenia coat of arms. (Source. #1747 .. onde von rusen) --Лобачев Владимир (talk) 16:55, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
Seems the original requester was mistaken. The name is not an "obvious error" but a name consciously chosen, backed by the description at the source. Even if it were an error (or whatever), the language of the filename should not be changed from that chosen by the uploader. –LPfi (talk) 07:05, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
@LPfi: It is nowhere written that this is a Russian/Rusen coat of arms, so these are purposeful obvious errors made by the uploader. The incomprehensible old text is "onde bon vufon" and large part of the text is missing, thus it is absolutely unclear what this text means. So we simply should use easily understandable title for these files. These obvious errors were rightfully corrected and his attempts to repeatedly mislead other users were rejected as not complying with renaming guidelines (see: 1, 2, 3). This is just a trolling by a Russian user. Simply look at what is happening in Ukraine and what Russia is saying about other countries, nations. Then such trolling will not surprise you. This user also repeatedly mix Lithuania and Ruthenia (Belarus, Ukraine) with Russia (at the time of the creation of this illustration it was called Muscovy). There were Muscovite–Lithuanian Wars for centuries, so how the Coat of arms of Lithuania can be "Russian"? Pure Muscovite trolling. -- Pofka (talk) 20:35, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Because he want to russify the history of Lithuania and is just trolling. It is simply hilarious that he created two reports to the administrators noticeboard that his bad faith attempts to present the Coat of arms of Lithuania as Russian coat of arms were rejected. The sooner this Russian troll will be blocked, the better. -- Pofka (talk) 20:45, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

  •  Comment by Pofka (initial requester to rename these files) User Лобачев Владимир recently uploaded three images of the Coat of arms of Lithuania and in the files descriptions he described two of them as "Russian coat of arms" (see: 1, 2) and in the third (see: 3) he described it as "Principality of Lithuania and Russia" (use translator for this one). We all know that Russia is a state which counts its history (with such name) only since the second half of the 16th century (see: Tsardom of Russia) and Muscovy (present-day Russia) is not equal and not related to Ruthenia (present-day Belarus and Ukraine). Knowing such topics as the Muscovite–Lithuanian Wars, it is an utter absurd to describe the Coat of arms of Lithuania as "Russian". Continuing his disruption, user Лобачев Владимир removed absolutely valid data that these images depicts the Coat of arms of Lithuania (see: 1, 2, 3, as well as 4, 5, 6), despite the fact that such title is used in the English Wikipedia's article about this symbol. This is a perfect proof what kind of internet troll user Лобачев Владимир really is and that his actions are far, far from the neutral point of view and Commons:Assume good faith. Please block this Russian imperialist-propagandist and stop the disruption he is causing in other countries affairs. Otherwise, this troll will probably soon describe other countries coats of arms as "Russian" as well. This trolling certainly must be stopped.
It is nowhere written rusen/Russian, thus it is not surprising that user Лобачев Владимир's trolling attempts with these files were rejected by the third-party users (renamers). Everyone can easily read that the last word in this text end with letters FON and it is highly doubtful that the first letter is R. The last word looks like vufon and text "onde bon vufon" (incomprehensible old text) certainly has nothing to do with Russia, which was called Muscovy at the time of the creation of this painting (1430s). Nevertheless, it clearly does not bother the uploader since he obviously simply want to troll in order to purposefully cause disruption on a daily basis. The current file names are clear and describes that these are Coats of arms of Lithuania from the Armorial Lyncenich. By the way, there already is a very similar illustration of the CoA of Lithuania uploaded in 2007 with title:
Any non-disruptive user certainly would not seek to present the Lithuanian coats of arms as "Russian". -- Pofka (talk) 20:18, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Did I say that this is the coat of arms of Russia, or did I indicate such a category? Not! Look at the indicated categories and tell me where is the coat of arms of Russia?
Previously, the full name of the state in Western Europe was the "Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Russia". This is probably what the artist wrote. But only the last three words survived. This is clearly stated in the study Armorial Lyncenich. --Лобачев Владимир (talk) 20:42, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
User Лобачев Владимир is simply trolling with Muscovite imperialist propaganda. Ruthenia (Belarus, Ukraine) is not Muscovy (Russia). People from the 1430s would not understand what is Russia as such thing did not exist back then. The state was called Grand Duchy of Lithuania (also see: Britannica article) and this is the Coat of arms of Lithuania. By the way, yes, if you don't remember you wrote that these are "Russian coat of arms" (see: 1, 2, 3). -- Pofka (talk) 20:55, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Yes, the Dutch author of the 15th century was a Muscovite imperialist, if he wrote so. Let's correct Western European medieval artists. We know better what they drew. --Лобачев Владимир (talk) 21:32, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
During the reign of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania such state or territory as Russia didn't exist. It was a state Muscovy or Muscovite Rus - "The term Muscovy persisted in the West until the beginning of the 18th century and is still used in historical contexts. The term remains current in Arabic as an alternative name for Russia." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Duchy_of_Moscow. --- Ke an (talk) 01:57, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

In any case, renaming against Commons:File renaming should be reverted. --Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 12:43, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
The renaming didn't violate Commons:File renaming. However, the image does actually say 'rusen' (they used a long-tail s at the time), so I would suggest including 'Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Ruthenia' in full. To only include 'rusen' and leave out Lithuania is inadequate, and would lead less educated readers to incorrectly believe it's Russian. Guido den Broeder (talk) 13:04, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
No. The renaming violated Commons:File renaming, "As a matter of principle it's best to leave all files with generally valid names at their locations, even if slightly better names may exist" + "Files should NOT be renamed only because the new name looks a bit better" + "Files should NOT be renamed only to translate the filename to another language". --Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 13:08, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
Neither applies here, as explained. Guido den Broeder (talk) 15:11, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
The renaming did violated the mentioned policy, because the name was valid (given according to the caption in the source book). And such discussions of slightly better names changing (moreover, with the changing of name language) are out of the project scope. Personally, I'm not against 'Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Ruthenia' of somehow like this in a new name, but I believe that according to renaming policy it is up to the original uploader to decide. And since the uploader can anytime change the name (e.g. for harmonization of the image set uploaded by the user or any other improvement), such name discussions are pointless. --Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 15:32, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
Adding Lithuania when it was misleadingly left out is not 'slightly better', it's a significant correction. Guido den Broeder (talk) 15:43, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
The original source book caption is "onde von rusen", which means that there was nothing misleading in the original file name. You attempts to accuse the user are against Commons:Project scope/Neutral point of view: "Commons is not Wikipedia, and files uploaded here do not necessarily need to comply with the Neutral point of view and No original research requirements imposed by many of the Wikipedia sites". --Kazimier Lachnovič (talk) 16:04, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

Multiple users misunderstanding the meaning of "freedom of Panorama"

I was skimming the pages that link to Template:FoP-Mexico and I found multiple inappropriate uploads by multiple editors. I'm going to guess that someone misunderstood the template and since then, users are copying exactly what they did because they think that that was legally valid. First, they take a free picture with a de-minimis copyrighted picture (for this example I will use File:Movilización por la desaparición y muerte de Debanhi Escobar el 22 de abril de 2022 en Monterrey, Nuevo León, México. 02.jpg, which has a copyrighted picture of a subject but FoP in Mexico allows it upload here). The issues start here; the users then proceed to upload the actual picture that it is depicted (File:Movilización por la desaparición y muerte de Debanhi Escobar el 22 de abril de 2022 en Monterrey, Nuevo León, México. 02 (cropped).jpg) which is not covered by FoP because, pretty much, FoP doesn't revoke the original copyrights. The most absurd case I've found is File:Museo del Estanquillo IMG 2052 (26233517721).jpg which depicts literally nothing, but then the user decided to upload several related files and crops. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of free time anymore so I can't go and check all the 1,600 files, but as far as I remember I checked this template a few years ago and I couldn't see major problems. So this must be a recent issue. One of the users, Loki4050 (talk · contribs), is blocked and tagged as a sockpuppet. I will assume good faith and not say that all these cases were cause by sockpuppets, but the improved files uploaded by Loi should be reverted and revdeleted as copyvios.50 Tbhotch 22:58, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

Nevermind about the good faith. All the users were blocked as sockpuppets. The uploads were performed by, at least,

It's actually a pretty complicated issue. What you call a misunderstanding is one of several plausible interpretations, based on the principle underlying COM:PD-Art in that different copies of the same work are fungible. (Note that FoP-Mexico does not require the depicted work to be de minimis.) I raised this conundrum at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Club-Tijuana.jpg, but unfortunately there was nobody interested in discussing it. I'm not arguing for or against any of these interpretations in particular, just saying that it is an area that needs more research. -- King of ♥ 06:47, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
On our page on Mexican copyright, there is no hint that you cannot directly photograph the work (without any DM-tricks), "provided that the normal exploitation of the work is not adversely affected". If the work photographed is "normally exploited" by making copies for sale, then our making it available for free probably could affect the sales adversely. The crops linked here are low-quality oddness that don't affect anything (which is understandable if they were uploaded just to cause disruption). I am also very sceptic about bringing a (legal) photograph of something that isn't normally visible from a public place to the public place and photographing it there (such as the photo of Debanhi Escoba). –LPfi (talk) 07:19, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
There are two provisions that have caused a lot of controversy in the past, namely "provided that normal commercialization of the work is not affected" and "without altering the work", but repeated discussions on VPC have confirmed the acceptability of FoP-Mexico despite these conditions while also failing to provide a clear picture of what exactly it means. -- King of ♥ 21:12, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
Usually display has to be permanent for FoP to apply, which disallows this kind of trick, i.e. File:Colosiobutton.JPG. Yann (talk) 21:07, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
Mexico is notable for not having this requirement of permanency. -- King of ♥ 21:12, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
"Without altering" does not fit well with the freedoms Commons requires. However, we do allow photos of works that may not be altered due to moral rights and we do allow photos that include non-free works, when those are part of the scene. If you take a photo of a non-free painting (permanently in a public place) in a country with moral rights and normal FoP, how do the rights differ from those of one from Mexico? You are probably allowed to make colour corrections etc. in both cases. Do we in fact care about to what extent you are allowed to make derived works? Do we treat moral rights as non-copyright restrictions? Is the Mexican restriction materially different? –LPfi (talk) 07:27, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

Need adminitrators' assistance

There is an active file deletion request discussion (requested by me) in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Malay sphere.svg, and seems like Malaysian accounts are gathering themselves up to give their keep vote, meanwhile that's not even part of their "issue". I have no assistance to mediate these issue, it feels like 'me vs. them' all alone, I need neutral resolution for my deletion request and I need someone to understand what my initial good intention is. You might find some harsh word uttered from me in that page, but I hope at least an admin would understand what my concern is. Anyways, thank you in advance for anyone who would like to assist and resolve these issue. My best regards. (Factual Fact Factor (talk) 15:34, 29 August 2022 (UTC))

There is no need for special admin intervention. The DR will be closed after 7 days (or later as there is always a backlog). Yann (talk) 17:12, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Flickr images by FaceMePLS needing human review (part 2)

See previous notice Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive 89#Help with Flickr images needing human review

As per the previous notice I've created a DR at Commons:Deletion requests/Files by FaceMePLS with review issues for images for which it can't be verified that they had a free license by referencing either the Internet Archive or the other photographs by this author that were either published or created on the same date. To make the review process easier for all the images easier I've programmed my bot to create an overview of Flickr images by FaceMePLS needing human review/By date published and Flickr images by FaceMePLS needing human review/By date created. Vera (talk) 12:03, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

@1Veertje: Those are some very nice graphs! Well done. Are you looking for some admin action above and beyond what will (hopefully) be eventually handled by COM:LR? —RP88 (talk) 02:09, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Would be nice to get some assurance that being able to reference another photo that was published/created on the same date that has a free license is sufficient proof. I know @JopkeB: for one has been hesitant to spend time categorizing this set while that's still up in the air. It would be more efficient if these files could be given general amnesty based on my reputation and if a sufficient slice has been given manual review. Maybe something we could put to a vote? Vera (talk) 08:16, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
The Commons community has considered you both trustworthy and competent to perform license review longer than they have me. When you add Flickrreview to a file Commons trusts that you are being both honest and diligent about what you observed of the file's license.

As I understand the chronology, on date A you pulled the metadata for a few thousand photos from a Flickr stream, recorded this metadata in a spreadsheet, and confirmed that the license for these photos was a free license. Later on date B the photographer relicensed the photos on Flickr to a non-free license. Subsequently on date C you uploaded these photos that you had previously flickr reviewed on date A using the license and other metadata from your spreadsheet. The FlickreviewR bot put a failed FlickrreviewR template on these files, since by date C the bot saw the changed license. Fortunately archives have captured the majority of the Flickr pages for these photos from before date B, you've added these archive links to the uploaded files, and so far these archived pages confirm that there wasn't any systemic issue with the flickr license review you performed on date A, as the licenses in the existing archived pages before date B match your spreadsheet.

Do I have all that correct? If so, and if it helps to have someone else say so, then I  Support you replacing the failed/error ... bot template on any or all of the files that appear in your documentation for the review on date A with a 1Veertje non-bot template. —RP88 (talk) 19:32, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

This is correct. I'll maybe wait a week for someone to object and then change the review status. Vera (talk) 14:25, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

Licence review request

Hi, Could someone review and pass File:MERSEYSIDE TRANSPORT TRUST RUNNING DAY AT LIVERPOOL SOUTH PARKWAY LIVERPOOL SEP 2013.jpg please?

A cropped bus in the above image (File:1986 Dodge D56 Alexander AM "MerseyMini".jpg) was uploaded here from Flickr under a CC licence (and was passed by reviewing admin) however the Commons uploader didn't upload the full uncropped image, I've asked at Copyright and was basically told Yes the full image can be uploaded however sadly at some point the Flickr licence was changed to "All rights reserved" but the image when uploaded here would've been under a CC licence,

So I was wondering if this could be reviewed and passed as when the cropped image was uploaded here it was obviously under a CC licence, I hope this makes sense, Many thanks, Warm Regards, –Davey2010Talk 12:09, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

Hey @Jeff G., Ah okay, I was trying to keep much background as I could in case it had some relevance but I do agree it does look horrid as is, I would've photoshopped the boy out had the car not been there, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 16:06, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
On the other hand: the boy is obviously interacting with the passing bus. So, IMO both versions may have own value. --Túrelio (talk) 16:02, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
  • Thanks for your comments Jeff and Túrelio - As Túrelio generally believes the image is fine and as no one other admins have commented I'm assuming the image as was (or as is now) is okay so I've reverted back to the full image, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 22:11, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
Davey2010, if you're wanting to focus on the bus for whatever reason (perhaps to illustrate it specifically) why not more tightly crop the bus to a new filename? Mass image renaming needed?

There are a few hundred images named something like "Today's Mass Extinction and Holocene-Anthropocene Thermal Maximum are being caused by the Super Rich (48658697083).jpg", or even worse, "Today's Mass Extinction and Holocene-Anthropocene are being caused by the Super Rich who are killing Net Neutrality on June 11, 2018 (42668146512).jpg". And these are pictures of - wait, don't look, please guess - demonstrators? Political activists? Climate charts? No. They are pictures of butterflies. Really. They're beautiful pictures of butterflies, so I don't want to just delete them all, but they have nothing to do with the title, which is gibberish, and worse, politically adjacent gibberish. Anyone willing or able to do some mass renaming? --GRuban (talk) 16:26, 1 September 2022 (UTC)

Hmm, apart from your question, when I clicked on source and author (Flickr-account) of the first in the list, File:Today's Mass Extinction and Holocene-Anthropocene Thermal Maximum are being caused by the Super Rich (47145658751).jpg, I got a 404 for both. How reliable are these uploads at all? --Túrelio (talk) 16:33, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
The EXIF for most of the uploads is consistently Canon EOS 7D Mark II, except a few from 2016 which are Canon EOS 60D; the former seems like a reasonable upgrade from the latter. So I have no reason to doubt that the Flickr uploader is the photographer, and COM:PDM is also fine. -- King of ♥ 20:58, 1 September 2022 (UTC)

Acroterion changed my block settings from Wikipedia to 2023, still need to get unblocked.

In February 2022, Acroterion blocked me from Wikipedia for six months, thus there were one-hundred eighty one days until my block was set to expire. But no, he waited until the very end of my block to change my block settings of the same day of next year (2023), which was very cruel and despicable of him to do, even by Wikipedia and his standards as well, thus meaning I have to wait even longer. How awfully and badly similar it is to these things (https://terribletvshows.miraheze.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log/block&page=User%3AMarioBobFan, https://terribletvshows.miraheze.org/wiki/Appetite_for_Destruction_(The_Loud_House), https://theloudhouse.fandom.com/wiki/Throwing_Pains, https://theloudhouse.fandom.com/wiki/Lalo_Land, https://spongebob.fandom.com/f/u/49644503, https://awfulmovies.miraheze.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log/block&page=User%3AMarioBobFan, and https://crappygames.miraheze.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log/block&page=User%3AMarioBobFan). I have had enough, so I have decided to post it here as a result. It does also not help by the fact that me evading my block was unintentional and don't have any plans to evade my block there in the slightest and it was a unintentional mistake to do, plus I wasn't even gonna use my other IP address to evade my block, thus it was a very cruel and despicable thing of you to do, even by you and Wikipedia standards, and plus I can't wait for a whole year, especially since that is way far too long for a block, and I am going to get very impatient over waiting, thus this is why you need to unblock me early. Also, Acroterion could have simply blocked my MarioBobFan account there since that's what Mario Jc has done on the Super Mario Wiki rarely, alongside the fact that I had plans to create a Wikipedia account since I was a toddler. I also may get very inpaintient over me getting unblocked early and I have almost reached my breaking point, and have been starting to get mad at Acroterion for blocking me. They're indeed blocked on enwiki by me for exactly this sort of conduct, for a long time. They have a history of going around to other projects and posting demands to be unblocked on enwiki, because they "need" to be unblocked, and they can't wait any longer. This has been going on for a couple of years with escalating block terms. For some reason they think it's a good idea. We're probably into global block territory. @আফতাবুজ্জামান and VNC200:
I wish VN200 explained the reason for the revert and/or engaged in discussion. The "it has been updated" comment is too cryptic for me to understand. The flip side is a slow revert/edit war is not productive.
Using SVG Translate on a file is not always the right thing to do. It may make further graphic editing of the file difficult. For the Bengali Assembly image, I do not see that as a problem because the file will probably not change.
However, SVG Translate can create confusing behaviors, and VN200 may be a victim of that behavior. When you added the translation for bn, the SVG file then had the bn language and the "default" language. We know the default language is English, but browsers do not know that. Say a user configured her browser to prefer en but display bn if that is not available. If she opens the SVG file, she will see bn rather than en! Her browsers believes bn is a better choice than the default.
If that is VN200's objection, it can be easily fixed. Use SVG Translate to translate the default language to English (which is just a copy). Then the file will have have en, bn, and the default language.
However, uploading under a new file name is always an option.

Very suspicious deletion request

I received a notice of a deletion request for one the files I uploaded in 2019, saying the file was unused and "out of project scope". I had a look and thought it strange that I would've uploaded this file without using it, and went to the relevant Wikidata item (Derby (Q78596356)) to correct the situation.

I then checked the item's edit history and found that the file had been removed from the item by @Nanahuatl, the creator of the deletion request, a minute before he created the request (removed 23:57, deletion req created 23:58).

I'm not sure if this is against any Commons or Wikidata rules, but this behavior definitely seems malicious to me. The user also opened a bunch of other deletion requests with similar rationales the same day, so it seems possible that the user has pulled the same trick with other files as well. I didn't see any other instances of similar behavior via global contribs, but he could've used an IP instead, and I don't know to check the previous usage of a file across projects.

I don't have the time, energy, or tools to investigate if there's more to this than just this one instance, so I'm bringing this to admin attention. -- Veikk0.ma (talk) 04:37, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

@Veikk0.ma: , I was trying to organize Category:Logos of companies of Turkey and naturally, nominating logos of non-notable companies for deletion. You can see some of them in here, and User:George Chernilevsky can give further information I suppose (the admin that closes those discussions and delete most of the files). And for the Wikidata, we can't just create any brand or company item, can we?
Nanahuatl (talk) 05:37, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
Not done. We do not discuss here Wikidata policies. Let them do, what they want. But Commons policy COM:INUSE says: if the file is used in any Wikimedia projects, then it is in Commons project scope. Removing the file from use and nominating it for deletion, because it is unused, is gaming a system. It is bad and discouraged. Nanahuatl, consider this a warning. Regular deletion request lasts a week and if after that the Wikidata item exists and the file is still used, then the deletion request will be closed as kept. Further discussion should be in the DR Commons:Deletion requests/File:Derby (Azmüsebat) logo transparent.png, not here. Taivo (talk) 06:53, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

Misuse of the rollback tool [6]. Reverted constructive edit adding named-after category according to RS. Александр Мотин (talk) 06:28, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

@Taivo: What did I do there? Please explain. Why adding named-after category is vandalism? --Александр Мотин (talk) 12:25, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
@Александр Мотин, Once you're reverted you then need to start a discussion with that user and come to an agreement. If you're not able to come to an agreement then there are various channels available that may help. Please don't revert or add the category back otherwise you could end up blocked for edit warring. –Davey2010Talk 12:52, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

Hello. Please help with unreasonable User:Frodar. He keeps reverting the editions to make this template work properly. He thinks category names of provinces of Argentina in commons are wrong and doesn't allow the names used on the template to match the exisiting names of the categories on the basis that everything is wrong except his particular view of how the provinces should be called. I have provided links on his talk page to show it is not only in commons. The same names are used in wikipedia in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German and Italian and yet thinks everything has to be changed except the template. He is making the template unsable, as it directs to redirect pages instead of the actual categories. Thank you in advance, tyk (talk) 19:00, 9 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I made the invitation to tyk to bring his case to a third party to resolve our dispute, meanwhile I told him the template must be reverted to the version before the controversial changes, as usual. All our discussion is in my talk page, where I posted my reasons of disputing his editions. So calling me unreasonable not only is rude, is also wrong. I have my reasons, he has his reasons. If somebody can move our discussion to a place where the community can participate to resolve it (if this place is not appropriate), it would be great. —Frodar (talk) 19:17, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
The crux of the matter is that, as things are at the moment, the template does not work properly. As I have said to you, if you want to change the names of the categories go ahead, but in the meantime we need the template to work. It is unreasonable to make the template unsable just because you don't agree with the existing names. tyk (talk) 19:23, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
If the template does not work properly is not my fault, in fact you did the edits of the categories to match your version of the template. As I see it, I'm keeping the template as it was, already designed to work when eventually all the categories match the template. Plus, it had been a long time the categories not "working", i.e. the template not encompassing all the existing categories. So I think there is no rush. —Frodar (talk) 20:01, 9 September 2022 (UTC)

Categories about Argentinian provinces predate a navigational template linking categories of provinces of Argentina (this is not a What was the first; the egg or the chicken situation: categories are first). If someone doesn't agree with those categories been called that way, they should open a "Categories for discussion" (CFD) process and reach consensus to change their names. Meanwhile, IMHO it's pretty obvious this template should work with the current categories. Disrupting their functioning in order to make a point is not useful. Strakhov (talk) 20:21, 9 September 2022 (UTC)

Another opinion, please? The user tyk is in a hurry to close the discussion and has reverted to his edition after considering that 2 (if we align Strakhov's opinion with his) vs 1 is enough. —Frodar (talk) 23:41, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
  • You two both need to learn how to explain with an example what the hell you are doing. It is so vague from this discussion it is impossible to tell. For example, I see from this revision that Frodar would remove "Chubut Province" so that only "Chubut" works. We have Category:2010 in Chubut Province which is part of Category:Chubut Province by year and Category:Chubut redirects to Category:Chubut Province so I suggest we follow what the categories are currently which I guess is Tyk's version. Frodar, what use is a template that doesn't even link to the main category pages? The underlying templates using this template don't work. You aren't going to force the category changes by screwing with the template so suggest the category moves first if you want them changed and let's have a usable template for what the categories are now. I question the category names but in the alternative to you two fighting, we can also have the temple use either option if that makes an ounce of sense. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 04:40, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

Thank you, Ricky. I did try to make the template use either option in this edit, but somehow it didn't work and I wasn't able to sort the problem. Anyway there were very few subcategories name without "Province" and they have subsequently been changed to match the main category of each of them, so there is no need any longer for the template to work with either option. tyk (talk) 05:22, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

I see that I'm being pointed out like the one who is "screwing" or "disrupting" the template. That is completely wrong, my intention was to protect the version that I considered perfectly designed to work, before the recent changes to the template and before the massive changes to acommodate the categories to the tyk's template version. I've said it before, I have the intention to make the template work correctly too. Regarding the example by Ricky81682, just want to point out I first edited the template on 22 May 2020 and that was the version I was trying to keep functioning with the revision that has the "Chubut" name in the cited revision. Category:2010 in Chubut Province and Category:Chubut Province by year were created by tyk days ago.
The option of working with the two ways is good, but it is true is a bit pointless after the massive edits made by tyk. If the option of working with the two ways of calling the provinces is not considered, I also offer to help to move all the categories of the provinces to the current version of the template (let's call it the "Chubut" version, opposing the "Chubut Province" version), because of the massive edits it may demand. —Frodar (talk) 00:28, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
No Frodar, I only changed a small number of SUBcategories and always to match the name of the main categories, which have been like that for years.
And this is not the only time you have been reverting edits to the template by other users who tried to make it work, as we can tell by the edit history of the template.
On 8 November 2021 you reverted the same edits by user EconAmbiente who tried to repair the template.
On 19 November 2021 you reverted the same edits by user Fadesga who also tried to make the template work.
On 6 March 2022 you again reverted the same edits by user ElGuruCesar.
On 14 March 2022 you reverted again the edits of user Fadesga who tried to repair it a second time.
Finally on 7, 9 and 12 September you reverted my edits despite me speaking to you on your talk page and explaining to you that the template as you want it doesn't work.
In summary, 4 different users within a period of 14 months have tried to repair the template given that your version doesn't work and you keep reverting everyone. Doesn't it make you think that perhaps you are wrong? You have been told that if you disagree with the existing names of the main categories you should look for the necessary consensus and change them. But you have done nothing in 14 months but reverting other users, making the template not fit for its navigation porpuse, thus disrupting the work of other users.
It's time you stop this. tyk (talk) 06:49, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
The changes to the subcategories involves hundreds of files, I see it because I have many of that files on my watchlist.
Maybe you and the other users didn't look with detail that the template could work as it was.
Yes, the main categories have been like that for years. Precisely since 2014, when a user blocked long ago, apparently in an unconsulted way changed the names of the main categories of the provinces, doing of the simple names a desambiguation category. And the template as was created in 2017 shows that the user that created it used unique names for many unique entities as Catamarca, Chubut, Formosa, Jujuy, La Pampa. —Frodar (talk) 18:13, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
@Frodar The fact that the template has been broken since 2017 is not a reason to keep it up. Category:2007 in Santa Fe Province does not display Category:2007 in Chubut Province. Period. The template is not doing its function and half doing its function because someone half did it 5 years ago is not a reason to keep the template useless. If you want to change the categories, change them but fighting to keep the temple not working is not helping. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 04:18, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
I reverted it to the one that makes Category:2007 in Chubut Province. Now which files are broken and why are files using a template for provinces anyways? Ricky81682 (talk) 04:21, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
There are no broken files. I was talking about the changes of the names of the categories which the files are in, like these [7] [8] [9], that tyk did to match his version of the template. —Frodar (talk) 07:11, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
@Frodar How does the template change the existing categories? Again, if your problem is the categories, suggest the categories for renaming. The template reflects the categories as they exist. I also don't understand why province matters so much if there isn't a separate city one but the template is not the priority. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 20:38, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Category:Mega Victoria (ship, 1988)

Category:Amorella (ship, 1988) was moved to Category:Mega Victoria (ship, 1988) contrary to our practise regarding categories by ship name (see User talk:AleWi#Categories of ships by name). about LTA sock userpage which contains impersonation to me; User:郊外生活のサブ垢

I would like to solve the problem at User:郊外生活のサブ垢. This account has been blocked and locked due to LTA sock, however, the content of this userpage contains impersonation to me. The first sentence and the second paragraph both are written in Japanese can be thought to impersonation. In addition, the latter part of this page has been copied and pasted from w:ja:User:郊外生活; my userpage on jawiki. So I tried to remove these content and replaced to Indefblockeduser because this user account has blocked, but I couldn't do that due to abusefilter, so I ask for sysop or other users who has enough rights to deal this issue. I have some proposal and I appreciate if either proposal is accepted:

  1. delete this userpage as vandalism or other adequate reason.
  2. replace the content of the username into Indefblockeduser, Sockpuppet or other adequate templates.
  3. add a template that shows this account is impersonation.

  • Many uploaded files of the user seem like old paintings, but at least the following ones are blatant copyvio:

- NitinMlk (talk) 21:22, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

I support the concerns raised above. I think some of this is a misunderstanding by ThethPunjabi on what "own work" means and how copyright works. Being the uploader of the image doesn't give them the valid ability to assign a license, especially when they don't know the actual author and date of the original (File:Various Punjabi Folk Instruments.jpg). All Most of these images should be deleted, some as pretty obvious copyright violations with the rest as precautionary as there isn't enough information to support the license claims made. Some are probably valid for fair-use on EN, but I would recommend the uploader start a discussion at w:Wikipedia:Media_copyright_questions and ask. Ravensfire (talk) 16:52, 26 September 2022 (UTC)
There are some listed above that could be valid.
Note - the "Painting of Jats from the Punjab Plains.jpg" I mentioned is NOT in the list of files NitinMlk posted. My error by implying it was in the list. Ravensfire (talk) 15:43, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Application of FoP in Mexico

Hi, Following previous discussion, we need to be consistent about deleting (or not) concerned files. List of files and DRs below, and also Category:Mexican FOP cases. Yann (talk) 17:54, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

Uploading a new large resolution version of a photograph because a small thumbnail can be seen on a FoP accepted image is quite stretching the law, but where do we draw the line? Some cases are obviously not OK. Others are not so obvious. Yann (talk) 18:21, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

This just came up on the help desk. Sorry about the cross-post, but I figured it was more likely that someone here would have a clue. Links on the upload page Commons:Upload are currently broken. At first I thought it was a templating issue, but now I think it's something in the "magic words" and I have only a tangential understanding of that. In an effort not to overly split the discussion, probably better followed up on Help desk, someone can mark this "resolved" here once it is no longer an active issue. - Jmabel ! talk 04:09, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi PedroAcero76. I'm not a Commons administrator, but went ahead and tagged the file with Template:Copyvio since I agree with your assessment that it's highly unlikely the COM:Own work of the uploader. You can do the same as well if you notice any other files which you think are clearly questionable per COM:NETCOPYVIO. You can also use Template:No permission since for cases where you think the uploader could be the copyright holder but aren't as sure. The was the only file the uploader uploaded so most likely they just mistakenly thought it would be OK to do so since the photo made "feely" available somewhere online. If, however, you notice the same uploader re-uploading this file or similar files with questionable licensing or questionable claims of "own work", you may want to seek adminstrator assistance again. It's OK to make a mistake like this once or maybe even twice, but repeating the same mistake over and over again isn't good for anyone and an administrator might need to get involved at that point. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:17, 7 October 2022 (UTC)

Confusing General and Subcategories

There is a general category named Category:Film directors from Iran and it has two subcategories Category:Male film directors from Iran and Category:Female film directors from Iran. I don't know should I transfers photo categories from "Category:Film directors from Iran" to male and female sub categories or vice versa?

More confusing point is that en:Category:Iranian film directors in English Wikipedia doesn't have male and female subcategories. Shkuru Afshar (talk) 08:01, 8 October 2022 (UTC)

I think the latter is no problem.
For the former, the category descriptions should tell whether all directors should be kept in the main category or everybody moved to the subcategories.
The problem with keeping everybody in the main category is that it is not obvious when some of the directors haven't been added to the relevant gender subcategory, and people searching by gender will think we don't have any media about them.
The problem with moving everybody (except the non-binary?) away is that people searching for media without caring about gender will mostly look in the bigger subcategory, which will effectively hide away the women (I suppose that's the smaller one).
Thus, making the subcats creates a problem whichever we choose, and both problems if the intension isn't documented. Anybody creating per gender categories should thus create or apply a solution, preferably an already existing general one. I haven't heard about any in common use.

Move bot needed

Hi, when I uploaded a series of files yesterday evening, a failure with the filenames happened. Correcting the misspelled names of 38 files by filemove is not anymore possible by me without the generation of unuseful redirects. Can it be done by a bot? Otherwise I would leave the wrong names, it is disturbing but does not cause further problems.

My errror occurred with the files in the Category:Himmelsleiter (Heidelberg) where the file names are "Hedeilberg" instead of Heidelberg. -- sarang사랑 10:24, 10 October 2022 (UTC)

Massive edits

User:Smasongarrison has launched a massive editing campaign (sometimes at about 10 edits per minute).

The edits include optimizing SVG files. Optimizing SVG just to optimize the file goes against the guidelines at Help:SVG guidelines.

The SVG edits remove metadata containing license information. That may violates the CC license.

The SVG edits have changed the appearance of SVG files such as File:Ambox metro icon.svg. The color of the area below the front of the train changed (since reverted).

Glrx (talk) 02:41, 10 October 2022 (UTC)

Another damaged file is File:BSicon hKRZWa red.svg. Smasongarrison is probably setting the optimizer to compress SVG arc flags, and that tickles a bug with WMF's SVG rasterizer. Glrx (talk) 02:54, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
File:Seal of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.svg now displays nothing. Glrx (talk) 03:01, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi there, so I'm not sure that this merits an AN notice. I'm not launching a massive campaign. I've been doing this kind of thing sporadically.
I wasn't aware that reducing file sizes was against the SVG guidelines. My apologies if that's the case. Smasongarrison (talk) 03:30, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
Anyway... I'm going back through my edits to see if there are any other errors I accidentally added. Smasongarrison (talk) 03:46, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
Anyway -- I've dug through the help files. And a would just love an outside perspective on how to interpret Help pages. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help_talk:SVG_guidelines#Relation_to_Help:SVG
I've read through them now and I think I have a better handle on your perspective. However, my interpretation of them is that they're guidelines, not firm policies that need to be enforced with Administrators. Honestly, I think that bringing this to the notice board wasn't needed, as I'd have been happy to have just been made aware of the guidelines and let this remain a talk page conversation. User talk:WPPilot

What's the best way to try and deal something like this and this? This user is quite frusrtrated over some problems related to a file they've uploaded and most likely has decided to leave Commons as a result. However, expecting all further communication related to Commons be made via email seems like an inappropriate thing to do since user talk pages are intended to be the place for such things. This user has upload lots of their photos to Commons and it's not totally out the realm of possiblity that someone might want to discuss one of them sometime down the road. The most obvious place to do so would be on the user's user talk page and not via email. Is it better to simply ignore something like this and let them be? Is it better to let them know about COM:TPG#User talk pages and maybe even COM:EMAILUSER? -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:56, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

They are no longer active, so such discussions will have to take place without them. Guido den Broeder (talk) 15:35, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
I've replaced the email with Special:EmailUser/WPPilot and have reverted their recent edits - All communication should be on-wiki and obviously if editors choose to use Special:EmailUser then that's up to them but forcing people to off-wiki email you is a massive no in my books. –Davey2010Talk 17:08, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
They've reverted the edit you made and also posted this so perhaps the best thing to do is to leave them be. They can't stop others from posting on their user talk page, but they can keep blanking their user talk page if they want. Each time the do remove something though, it will be seen as evidence that they "read" whatever was posted and understood it. If their uploads have problems and they're properly notified on their user talk page, then they won't be able to claim they weren't because they weren't emailed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:36, 12 October 2022 (UTC)

There are only few oversighters for Commons so you might have to find the one was last active and just send them an email. @AqueWiki: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The following applies to each photo. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller jpg photo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F or French Wikipedia in compliance with fr:WP:EDP because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:55, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
OK, I understand. Thank you for the explanations. This "rule" is extremely restrictive: how to upload a portrait photo of a character (just his face) if you have a photo of his whole body! it's impossible ! In the same way, absolutely all the photos I send on the internet (website, email, attachments) using Photoshop are resaved at 72 dpi with the "for the web" option so they are much optimized and lighter but of course all metadata are removed. Thank you again. Dominique AqueWiki (talk) 11:54, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
We no not want to have photos "downsized for the web" the downsizing for thumbnails is done on server side. We want the original file to keep opportunities for changes or printing or what every could be needed in the future. --GPSLeo (talk) 12:53, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
@AqueWiki: To be clear, Wikimedia Commons does not want images 'resaved at 72 dpi with the "for the web" option so they are much optimized and lighter but of course all metadata are removed', please see COM:HR. Also, I have seen many photos here with Photoshop in their metadata, so removal of that is not required, either.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:35, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

Hello! This is the result of an incorrectly renamed file. The file was not renamed to the requested name. The file was renamed to the name that was invented when renaming. I ask you to rename the file to the name I suggested. Thanks. --Matsievsky (talk) 18:03, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

@Matsievsky: We don't switch languages for file names. See COM:FRNOT. If you want to propose it be renamed into something else in Russian, please go ahead. The current file name is accurate, for its content. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 20:38, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
That's not true. See COM:FRNOT: "Files should NOT be renamed ONLY to translate the filename to another language and/or because the filename is not correctly capitalized." I renamed the file for two OTHER reasons. --Matsievsky (talk) 22:50, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
You know, Matsievsky, being rude to someone is not a great way to get them to do what you want. Looking back at the request, you used 2 and 4: the previous name wasn't a "meaningless or ambiguous name", so that was completely irrelevant and shouldn't have been used. I have renamed it to what you requested. Perhaps next time you can use only relevant criteria when requesting such renames, as well as learn to be more polite to your fellow volunteers. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 16:35, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

File:Nur Muhammad Taraki.png

I'm not sure about the provenance of File:Nur Muhammad Taraki.png? A different version of the photo was originally uploaded, but that looks like a slightly different photo. The updated version can be seen here and its description seems to indicate that the photo is from 1979; so, the years match up, but it doesn't seem to be the same photo as this. If the licensing of each version is OK for Commons, perhaps then the file should be treated as an COM:OVERWRITE and split into two separate files. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:27, 22 October 2022 (UTC)

Crosswiki uploads from French Wikipedia

Elifallen has uploaded a number of team logos from French Wikipedia like File:FC Annecy 2022 Logo.svg, File:Racing Besançon.svg, File:AS Monaco FC Logo 2021.svg, etc. under "CC-by--sa-4.0" licenses, but it's not clear whether these are OK for Commons. The French Wikipedia local files all appear to be released under a "registered trademark subject to trademark law" license (I used Google translate for the files' pages), but it's not clear whether that's equivalent to the license used for Commons. The French Wikipedia licenses also state "In the United States of America, use of this image is permitted within the framework of fair use trademark law." which is another Google translation and might mean "fair use copyright law". If that's the case then it would seem that Commons can't keep any of these per COM:FAIR. Quite a number of files were uploaded and they all seem to be licensed the same way. Some of them might possibly be PD, but COM:TOO France seems to suggest that the TOO in France can be quite low (at least in comparison to the TOO of the US); so, PD-logo might not be an option for some of the files. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:11, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

Comment I deleted 2 of them which are complex logos, and obviously not OK without permission from the copyright holder. Others may be PD-textlogo. Yann (talk) 15:09, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

Filename removed

I think the very title is already a violation--certainly of en-wiki's BLP, for instance. Drmies (talk) 00:59, 27 October 2022 (UTC)

@Drmies: The file name is almost certainly a problem per COM:BLP and COM:FNC#5, but there's also the problem with this being a user-created collage in which three different photos with unclear copyright status are being used. The file has already been deleted, but if you notice it being re-uploaded, then you might just want to contact Taivo the deleting admin or another Commons admin directly. It might also be a good idea to contact COM:OVERSIGHT too to get the name removed the name from any Commons pages. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:09, 27 October 2022 (UTC)

Some issues about user:RespectCE

Hello sysops. After several attempts to communicate with them on user talk pages have failed, I am requesting a sysop to intervene in this matter.

The user RespectCE (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log uploaded some files and their sources were discord. Since I could not verify that these discord-sourced files were copyrighted or not, I tagged these files and asked the user to send the relevant licenses to VRT, but the user refused, repeatedly reverted my tagging, and strongly asked me on their talk page to take them to the admin noticeboard.

Here are the files with suspicious sources, they are

Even though the situation is bad enough, I would still like to communicate with the user through a sysop or another user to resolve the issue accordingly. I tried to leave this alone, but the user just got blocked for disturbing a meta-wiki discussion, and that worries me. Lemonaka (talk) 22:10, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

You could have easily viewed the license release statements via the urls. You can create an account on discord for free if you can't see them without an account, or you could have asked or another user to verify it for you by placing a tag requesting license REVIEW. Instead, you tagged the files with a tag that would result in automatic deletion in seven days - and the problem is, if the files are deleted, nobody can easily view the links to verify the license release statements in the first place. This user has also been makeing personal attacks on me and making absurd accusations of trolling and personal attacks to me on meta simply for bringing up the fact that Ukrainian wikipedia has a Nazi problem (as evidenced by examples of usernames containing nazi slogans and pro-nazi userboxes).

Anyway, I request that this user (Lemon) cease their attacks on me and find a better way of trying to verify the licenses (re: just view the actual links with statements) instead of tag-bombing in an unproductive way. You know that the copyright holders I have attributed have released these photos (if they didn't I wouldn't have provided links to release statements), you are just tag-bombing to punish me for brining up ukwiki on meta.--RespectCE (talk) 00:03, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

I have replied to you that the links cannot be checked. It's a private or personal channel, how could I check it? By the way, if I attack you on meta, why you are the one blocked instead of me? Here's common, solve common's problem here, instead of talking about meta. Lemonaka (talk) 00:31, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
Just apply to view it! It's not that hard! I'm blocked because of a mistake I made in the past, not these photos!!!--RespectCE (talk) 17:55, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
@RespectCE: A private Discord server is not a valid source. Please have these posted to a publicly accessible website where the license declarations are clear, or have the authors go through VRT to release them. Thank you. howcheng {chat} 22:18, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

I believe a RCU should done about Mohammedarrhioui and Hafsaelfakir for legit sockpuppet abuse suspicion. See the only edition of the latter here. Global contributions of both accounts (16, [17]) are entirely dedicated to the crosswiki promotion of a non notable artist named "Mohammed arrhioui".

d:User:Mohammedarrhioui was blocked indefinitely on 6 March 2021 for "Vandalism-only account".

es:User:Hafsaelfakir created the article on eswiki a few days ago (now deleted).

fr:User:Hafsaelfakir and fr:User:Mohammedarrhioui both have been blocked indefinitely for repetitive creation and copyvio of an article on the same topic under different titles, the article is now creation protected (see fr:Mohammed_arrhioui and fr:Mohammed_Arrhioui (artiste)).

May I ask your kindness for a review of the matter which I just receive and herein quote "FYI, see User talk:Elcobbola#Beeveevee, for your seemingly "duckish" behavior, a form of sockpuppetry. Continued using Commons as a mere cloud storage is unacceptable, please read and comprehend fully COM:SPAM. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 18:40, 2 November 2022 (UTC)"
My Contributions upon a careful perusal thereof are all encyclopedic and not a single photo has been uploaded by me as SPAM or Webhosting;
Upon careful review of the history of JWilz12345 and its contributions and fact check, there has been a very long edit war, anger and clear enmity between this user and User:Judgefloro who was blocked a sockpuppet after having long posted template of Wikibreak due to COVID illness and personal reasons;
I work as an Official of the Philippine Government, and the last thing that I will do is to use Commons as SPAM and Webhosting; I was invited herein via email by some learned editors and even 2 adminstrators that they need photos of Philippines to fill in Wikipedia articles;
IN THE LIGHT OF THE FOREGOING, I certify and state that I am not a DUCK or SOCK of any and all those mentioned by JWilz12345 (from Pulilan, Bulacan barangays) and I will faithfully and legitimately follow all Commons rules with advise of some editors and 2 administrators, HOPING for you kind action on the matter, and very sincerely yours Beeveevee (talk) 01:58, 3 November 2022 (UTC).

  • @Beeveevee: my reply to you, how can you prove you are not a sockpuppet when I can notice the similarity of the nature of your uploads? Repetitive, blog-type, redundant, and webhosting? The following cases serve as my proofs and observations on the similarities between your uploads and RamaGaspar's uploads.
Case 1 – two different under-construction railway stations, but in terms of redundancy very identical or similar

Samples of your uploads at Category:Construction of San Fernando station (Sindalan-Calulut-Malpitic section)

Samples of RamaGaspar's uploads at Category:Construction of Malolos station in 2022

Case 2

Splitting of a category into subcategories even if unnecessary, unless you have treated Commons as a cloud storage of your near-identical and redundant photos, instead of carefully choosing which one should be uploaded and which one should not be.

Your way of uploading very redundant images of the same subject category instead of three–five each subject category demonstrates the high probability of the similarity on the nature of your uploads with those of RamaGaspar et. al.. I do not question the value of your photos themselves, but I take an exception to your way of flooding near-identical and redundant photos instead of carefully choosing which photos are to be uploaded and which are not.

And by the way, I discovered your uploads at Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in the Philippines, in which your two near-identical photos (File:Lawton Avenue Global City Viaduct 37.jpg and File:Lawton Avenue Global City Viaduct 45.jpg) are tagged. It is too odd to consider an ordinary road as a heritage monument, but that is out of topic here. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 03:20, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

Multiple copyrighted images uploaded by Het666

I recently nominated three images uploaded by the user as copyvios (1, 2 and 3) but looking at the contribution history it is clear that several others, possibly all, of their uploads have the same problem.
