Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Re: Charts extension

[edit]

Hey, just replying to your question in the (now-archived) VP topic about enabling Charts on Commons. Sorry it took so much for me to reply. We are exploring ways of making the Data namespace more visible/discoverable, and both phab:T242596 and phab:T235332 are on our radar. The Charts team is in conversation with the Structured Content team (the team that worked on Structured Data on Commons) to understand the different options available. Right now, it doesn't seems like there are any simple technical solutions, so we'll need to be mindful about where we invest time and energy. The primary goal would be finding a way to support Categories, with Structured Data as a secondary (longer-term) goal. Hope this helps! Sannita (WMF) (talk) 20:56, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that's what happens when you develop things without paying attention to (and sometimes actively ignoring) what people actually need. The sad thing is that we've gotten used to it so much it's become the expected outcome of WMF development projects. I've been around for a long time and I've always tried to keep a positive and constructive attitude. But I'm getting so tired of this I'm not even frustrated any more. I also need to be mindful about my time and energy, and Wikimedia in general and Commons in particular more and more seem like a bad investment on my part – partially because of things like this.
Thanks for your answer, though, and sorry for the rant – no need to reply ... El Grafo (talk) 09:45, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
