I've recently become the owner of such a medal, the left one on the pictures listed. French Marianne's profile on one side and an anchor crossed by a sword on the other. Silver from what I could read on the side. Would you have any information regarding the date of fabrication, the worth, the number of such medals? If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. Would you be able to advise on creating a similar template to use on the staff photographers of the New York World-Telegram and the Sun, whose photos are in the Library of Congress archives? An example is Image:Martin Luther King Jr NYWTS 4.jpg, which is currently using PD-author. I'd be interested in searching through the LoC archives and finding other ones covered by this. It is only a small amount: "A small portion of the photographs were taken by NYWT&S staff photographers, and are in the public domain per the instrument of gift.", but it could be worthwhile creating a template to cover them all. I did a search for "New York World Telegram and the Sun Newspaper Photograph Collection no known restrictions" and there were 578 hits. Many don't have more than a thumbnail (some don't even have that), and some are, well, just documenting day-to-day life and are not terribly encyclopedic, but some have potential. Forgive me for dumping a load of link here to the staff photographer links I've found so far (from the first few pages of the search), as the original search doesn't seem amenable to saving as a link. Spam
[edit]The way User:WTMuploader/gallery has been categorised, is pure unadaulterated spam. Although individual images are useful, there is no need to plaster WTM's contribution in every category that these images have been added. (sarcasm begins) Should we all sigh, be grateful and worship WTM for all the wonderful images that WTM has produced? (sarcasm ends). The fact is the vast majority of images in the WTMuploader/gallery have nothing to do with the categories they have benn added to. For example of the what looks like 500 or so image in the gallery only two images are of Franklin Wharton (and those two are near dupes), so thats less than 1/2 of one precent of the images belong tp the Franklin Wharton category, making the user category grossly mis-categorised. From my calculations, this applies to all the categories that this user gallery has been added to. (frustration begins) I would not have written this, if the user gallery had not used templates for categorisation, I was going to re-categorise this gallery for you, but was unable to do so because of the use of templates. Please fix this yourself, the only categories this gallery needs is WTM user pages and user galleries. No other contributer, or group of contributers attempts to demand the level of recognition that WTM seems to desire, how would Commons pages and categories look, if every uploader of original images was to behave as your group has done and was to add every image that they have created, and not just the pertinent ones, into every category that they have contributed to? (frustration ends). My apologies if your intentions were other than I surmised, but thats why I hate categorisation templates so much as they are a bit of a blunt instrument and behave in a way that is not always predicatable and desired. - The intention was not to spam all of these categories at all. The gallery page was automatically generated by Commonist, and yes, it requires cleanup, because the categories are only supposed to go on the individual image pages, not on the gallery itself. I'll have to remove these shortly by adding a new parameter to the template and activating it on the gallery page, as was done with Commons:Wikipedia Takes Manhattan/Gallery from last April. Please bear with me if this takes a little while to get through them all. Thanks.
- Fair enough. On a related note is there any reason why Category:Categories improved by Wikipedia Takes Manhattan shouldn't be a hidden category?

Wiki takes Manhattan project
[edit]In contrast what you might be thinking, I sympatize with your project. I encountered however a number of maintenance problems as you can see in here.
I noticed that for the new version, you have a separate file for naming and categorising, which is already a big step forward. You should keep in mind that on commons, hundreds of images are deleted daily because there is no clear user, description and/or permission field in the image file itself. We move/rename hundreds of categories per week, and I am pretty much sure that in the category names you selected, several are not compliant with commons naming rules, so will need to be moved one day or another. Moreover, we try to educate our uploaders to use a descriptive, meaningfull file name.
So I feel that we better react as to have improvements overtime, as already present in the last batch. --Foroa (talk) 18:04, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Improve WTM
[edit]Hi Pharos, dont understand me wrong, i really like the idea of a scavenger hunt to get more images for articles. The only thing i dont like is the current implementation. I understand you have images scattered around and you want them on wiki as fast as possible. This is possible without all to much extra work. In the end we want each image to have to following {{Information}} template
- Description : What did we photograph? We did it for <insert your favorite hunt>
- Source : Own work of team <the team>
- Data : The date of the hunt
- Author : <The team> of <insert your favorite hunt>
- Permission : All the teams in <insert your favorite hunt> agreed to release their images under the <insert licence template>
And besides the information template you need one or more categories.
This can all be accomplished in one template you substitute at upload (or later if you want time to fix things). The way you're doing it now (lot's of templates) break several processes here at Commons (like categorization). I created a test template at User:Multichill/Scavenger hunt. It produces a page with all the information + categories andit can be substituted. It still needs some tuniing, but maybe we can use it to clean up the old scavenger hunts and use it as a basis for future hunts. Categories can be altered at User:Multichill/Scavenger hunt/category and descriptions at User:Multichill/Scavenger hunt/description. Some examples:

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Can we also have the true author? The uploader also claimed authorship on (and attribution for...) the Walter Lewin videos which is corrected already. The Earth-Touch videos have the same problem, of course its not ok to reuse the files for money making as long as "Totallynuts" is attributed. Creating new copyright code template
[edit]Hi Pharos, I tried what you said, and created a new /en copyright code. I based it off of the Brooklyn Museum, and the Flickr ones. At each step along the way, I tried to reproduce what I found in the Flickr one, but I don't think it is working right. Here are the ones I created:
- Template:Getty_Research_Institute-no_known_copyright_restrictions
- Template:Getty_Research_Institute-no_known_copyright_restrictions/doc
- Template:Getty_Research_Institute-no_known_copyright_restrictions/en
This what the code in the /en template looks like, if were displayed properly:
- This image was taken from the Getty Research Institute's Open Content Program, which states the following regarding their assessment that no known copyright restrictions exist:
- The Getty Research Open content images are digital surrogates of works of art that are in the Getty's collections and in the public domain, for which we hold all rights, or for which we are not aware of any rights restrictions.[13]
- Note: While the Getty Research Institute cannot make an absolute statement on copyright status for legal reasons, "Open content images can be used for any purpose without first seeking permission from the Getty."[14]

Views of Manhattan from above
[edit]You added this category to the cats "View from High Bridge" and "Views from Fort Tyron Park", however the views from these places can be of multiple locations, not just Manhattan. From the High Bridge one can see both Manhattan and the Bronx, and from Fort Tryon Park, one can see New Jersey, Manhattan and the Bronx. Paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art to sort out
[edit]Hi Pharos, https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=910837 gives a list of files that are in category:Paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or subcategories), but not in Category:Artworks with Wikidata item or Category:Artworks with known accession number. These need to be sorted out by adding either the accession number or the wikidata identifier. While typing this message I realized https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=910848 should probably be sorted out first. These are subcategories of category:Paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art that don't have a link to Wikidata. Not all can be connected, but quite a few individual painting categories can. That will probably make a lot of the unconnected works show up at User:Multichill/Same image without Wikidata/Category match. Large numbers of broken creators / categories on files

I am also seeing a somewhat matching (though not verified) broken categories. I am going to stop doing maintenance and may wish to cast your eye down the list at Category:Bad use of creator template - option Thanks. Some of the imperfections unfortunately come from the limitations of the Commons:GLAMwiki Toolset, and can only be fixed after upload. Met categories
[edit]Your Met photo uploads are including categories that are redirects, such as Category:Metropolitan Museum of Art by department - Islamic Art, which is a redirect to Category:Department of Islamic Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art -- and many, many others. Some of these categories contain over 10,000 files. "Drawings and prints" contains almost 40,000! RussBot will move these files to the correct categories, but it is limited to 200 files per category per day, to prevent overloading it. At that rate, emptying out the incorrect Drawings and prints category will take around nine months. You might want to look into other ways of fixing this. --R'n'B (talk) 17:21, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

Since you've been dealing quite a bit with issues of museums and copyright, I wonder if you know what the copyright rules would be for such pictures. I know that clothing is not itself copyrightable, but I don't know about the styling of the clothes, the forms they're on, the e.g. hair styles on the forms, the arrangement of the clothes into sets, etc. As an example, I'm talking about images like this one (which from the LA Times, i.e. not actually one I would be uploading). - Oh, I see that you have a fair range of the images where you have plugged in multiple parameters, eg. File:-Album page with ten photographs of La Comtesse mounted recto and verso- MET DP235114.jpg. If these are multiple creators, then I can manually run through the list with AWB and convert the use of the template with parameters to be multiple instances of the template with single parameters. Let me know if you need assistance resolving these, don't want to dive in where the is uncertainty about what is trying to be portrayed. — billinghurst sDrewth 22:17, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Billinghurst: Yes, these are generally meant to be multiple creators, and are drawn from the Met database. Some instances might be incorrect in our definition of what a 'creator' is, but most will be good, and converting them in this way should be a real benefit. - Thanks. It is a lower level task in the panopoly of maintenance, though I have progressed through numbers, and skipped those that were complex or unclear. Some I just tidied, put some page inclusion links, and left the names nude. Now I know and if when it is returned to then it can be addressed. I retroactively noticed that the use of the semi-colon for name dividers, and if we face such an import in the future, it would be useful to have your bot check for their presence, or flag as an indicator of multiple creators. — billinghurst sDrewth 21:52, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

- @Cold Season: Yes, in most cases the title has been automatically extracted from the metadata, but sometimes in cases where an artwork has multiple titles this has failed. Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. Daybreak Star
[edit]I just feel this narrowing to "arts" is wrong. Despite the name of the building, Daybreak Star Cultural Center is not primarily an arts institution. "Cultural" is meant in a much broader sense, and in a Native American context arts and culture are much harder to separate out in a Western context. It doesn't feel right to me to relegate Native American dance, in particular, to the realm of "arts": I don't think that is how their culture sees it. Yes, Daybreak Star has a museum-quality collection of contemporary Native American art (including several major pieces by Template:W), but they are also the headquarters of United Indians of All Tribes and home to the most important Native American school in Seattle city limits. Plus the building and its grounds are the main place in Seattle for Native American ceremonies of whatever sort (although the federally unrecognized Duwamish do now have a building of their own elsewhere). - Jmabel ! talk 21:31, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
