Statue of George Washington in Newark, New Jersey

[edit]

I've used two of your images of the statue in a new article, Equestrian statue of George Washington (Newark), and received a question about copyright. Would you mind if I added, or would you add, Template:Art Photo to File:Washington in Washington Pk jeh.jpg (I like this great photo in profile!) and File:Geo W Washington Park jeh.JPG to address this? A 1912 statue should not be a problem, {{PD-old-auto-expired |deathyear=1936}}. Has a wikidata entry.

Thanks, Zeete (talk) 12:26, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Zeete: I'll be delighted if you will insert the appropriate template. I neve heard of it, and ought to learn how to use it since dozens of my pictures are of old statues.Jim.henderson (talk) 14:04, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Category discussion warning

Erie Basin has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Image Suggestions

[edit]

Hi Jim! It was really cool meeting you at the last Wikimedia meetup on Sunday March, 27. I mentioned the experimental | Add an Image functionality being added to Wikipedia to suggest images for given articles. I remember now that it is only available on certain Wikipedias, and it looks like it is only on Arabic, Czech, and Bengali Wikipedias as of now. Just thought it was an interesting connection between what you've been doing for years, and something WMF is starting to dig into as well. By the way your photographs are beautiful, I'm honored to have met you, thank you for all your contributions!! NNikkhoui (WMF) (talk) 17:47, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It was my pleasure, NNikkhoui (WMF)@ to meet one of the people working on technical matters such as image suggestions. Naturally in reading this I skipped the part about which Wikipedias have the "suggested image" feature trial, and tried to install it in both EN and Commons. Confusion abounded, until I came back here and opened my eyes. Due to the plague discouraging my photographic day trips I have loaded myself with too many personal categorizing projects, and won't have time to look into this feature until either Summer's photographic opportunities have passed, or the trial is made available in my wikis.
You mentioned on Sunday that there was some connection to the Wikimedia Commons Android App, which I have been using frequently ever since its crashes became rare, last year. My usual procedure is to find targets by WikiShootMe, and snap and upload them by Commons App on the spot. ('Twould be pleasant if one of them had most the features of the other.) If a target is more important, for example it has an article but no picture, I also snap it with the real camera, which has better optical qualities, and eventually process and upload it from home. As for Commons App, I have noticed sometimes that it makes category suggestions that are not obviously connected with the Wikidata item that brought me there, nor to the neighborhood geocoordinates, nor even to the filename I already assigned, yet are somewhat relevant to the photo. So, perhaps that's the connection you were talking about.
In any case I hope to meet you again at the en:Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Wiknic April 2022 for a more relaxed chat. Unless that turns out to be a similarly big bash, with different benefits. Jim.henderson (talk) 21:01, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You're invited to provide input…

[edit]

Dear fellow member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

At our last meeting end of August, we talked about getting in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation and offering our help for improving Wikimedia Commons. Today, I invite you to provide your input on a draft open letter to the Foundation. Over the course of the next ten days, we'll further improve the text together, before inviting people to sign it. If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.

Question from the CPUG Board

[edit]

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Railroad at Nutley, NJ

[edit]

I've seen your picture of former Nutley station. Very nice shot. I was there year before you. There is a senior day care center nearby, I was there as a substitute for a computer literacy instructor. During the break I took a walk around the tracks, but didn't cross them. Could it be considered as trespassing?

  • I didn't see any trains, and locals told me that trains appear once a year on average. Does it sound like true?

GK tramrunner RU (talk) 02:13, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nutley RR station
Hmm, @GK tramrunner RU: maybe I should look for a job like that. I'm old enough to be one of your students but I've been teaching new Wikipedians, mostly cute young lady scientists and artists and the like. Last time I was in Newark was in early 2020, teaching art fans at The Newark Museum.
I took a look at your upload record and what, is there a Narrows Botanical Garden? I was completely unaware, but it's been a couple years since I biked through what I take to be the location. The official Parks Dept page gives a location far inland; must be an error. Anyway I guess it ought to have a Wikidata item, a mention in the park article, and maybe a Commonscat. I won't get to it immediately if at all. I also noticed that your pictures have no geocoordinates. Putting my pictures on maps has resulted in other editors taking an interest in a subject.
I've walked along tracks of many disused rail lines in the metro area, and a few that were used almost every week. Nobody ever challenged me, though one day in 2013 a cop in Belleville stopped to ask why I was snapping pictures on, I forget, that town's old main drag. Nice fellow, after I explained to him and the others who stopped to assist. As for whether the Newark Industrial Branch runs a train every year or not, a quick Google search has given me no information. The track had rust on top, suggesting that no train had passed in at least a month. The pictures suggest that the southern track was being kept in reasonably good working condition. When I was there, I didn't realize that the line had Three stations within Nutley. It makes me want to return and walk the track some more.
Perhaps you would like to meet me and other local Wikiphotographers. The next two meetings of the NYC Chapter will be a small one on December 28 Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/December 2022 an and a big one on January 15 Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Wikipedia Day 2023. Last week I was in a Zoom call with mostly Philadelphians, mostly librarians. A librarian at Rutgers Newark who is a new editor wanted help with a new biography of the living. We all joined in to make it a success and I invited her to these two meetings.
Thank you @Jim.henderson, for evaluating my knowledge. As of Narrows Botanical Garden - I visit this place very often, because my friends live in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. I live in other part of Brooklyn. Sorry for my sloppiness, I waste a lot of my time on many pointless projects such as "my own blog on youtube", and it's obviously a reason to devote more time to wikipedia. Narrows Botanical Gardens

[edit]
As of Wikipedia meetup, now I can do it only in online version. I will appreciate if there is such. I participate much more in Russian WIKI. I even teach at WIKIversity. And again I am too sloppy to organize myself.

  • Dear Jim Henderson, is there any way to write private message to you?
GK tramrunner RU (talk) 02:42, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Splendid, @GK tramrunner RU: I have created although for some reason it is not showing on the Commons Category page. The photos with their geotags helped me understand the location. As it happens, I visited a relative a few months ago at 4th Avenue around 70th Street in Bay Ridge but probably won't go there again until warm weather becomes common.
Both of the meetings I mentioned in the above links are mixed face-to-face and by Zoom or other online connection, though on the screen you probably won't meet one of our Polish-Russian translators. I am slightly surprised you haven't described any of your pictures bilingually. Anyway you should sign in for this coming Wednesday with a note that you will be on the Zoom connection.
I can be reached at jim.henderson@juno.com which is my public E-mail that does not get much of my attention. I will mail you back with my E-mail address for real people. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:25, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for posting Narrows Botanical Garden in WIKIdata. I am slightly familiar with it. Like a programmer by education, I am interested of course in WIKIdata but don't have time for it.
  • I've sent you an email, just to establish an email connection, and share some non-wiki ideas. You can read it, when you have time.
GK tramrunner RU (talk) 15:45, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, since I spend a lot of time in Russian Wiki, I am creating a course about New York. I guess you can read it with a help of google translator.

Quoting from an E-mail:

He thinks that anyone who doesn't let you take pix - infringes your human rights. Logically and legally he is right, unless we are taking pictures of some restricted area with explicit prohibition.

Photobombing
Legally yes, @GK tramrunner RU: if people are in a public area, they are legally fair game for photography in the United States and many other places. However, reasonable fair-minded people won't think that being legal is the only consideration. We also want to be polite, and prefer not to elevate our wishes into a "human rights" question. I try to avoid recognizable depictions of adults in my pictures, if they aren't trying to be seen, and don't at all allow children to be recognizable.
A few days ago I was near a small park that was marked as red in WikiShootMe. Alas, on this warm pleasant day the park was full of children. Quickly I gave up the idea. On the other hand, a few years ago I was snapping a subway station under construction, when one of the workers stood in front of the lens in order to be seen. All is well; he might be appearing in the article for a century or more to come. Several years ago a woman was sitting on the front steps of a school. I asked whether she wanted to be in Wikipedia and answered her questions, explaining that if she said no, I would not take the picture. She thanked me and decided to go into the school, clearing the way. Sometimes this is practical; other times, no picture.
In my first couple years of photography, I usually had a target in mind. Usually it was near enough for an easy bike ride, and I chose a route that might take me near public buildings, which is to say ones that are not warehouses or modest homes. Immodest homes and public buildings became targets of opportunity. Sometimes I spent so much time on those, that I didn't get to the intended target. So, no problem; get it some other day.
In the past several years the WikiShootMe site and the Commons Android App have been available. They show articles and other things that have Wikiedata coordinates showing that they are nearby. I pick a route that will pass many of the dots that are red because they have no picture. Sometimes I look at the existing pictures and decide whether I should try to beat them. Anyway this procedure makes me travel more slowly, catching many pictures that I would otherwise miss.
In younger days I biked everywhere, almost regardless of weather. Nowadays I tolerate heat, cold, and distance less well, and probably I'll take the subway to Grand Army Plaza for WikiWednesday this week. Several years ago when my niece lived in Marine Park I biked there from Manhattan. Biking back and forth along the efficient coastal route between Sheepshead Bay and her new home in Bay Ridge would not be difficult; probably taking about twenty minutes longer than the subway ride. When not in a hurry, I would take the more photograpically diverse inland routes. One road I ought to bike is Rockaway Parkway. Many parks, churches, libraries and train stations are red dots on the map.
And no, though many of my colleages in Wikimedia NYC are educators and some are artists, I am far from either. Just an elderly retired blue-collar worker with an interest in a world of wonders. Jim.henderson (talk) 05:28, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for doing this? Would you be interested in also categorizing the files in Category:Sheet music of Tom Lehrer and Category:Tom Lehrer lyric sheets? —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 18:57, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, @CalendulaAsteraceae: I'll probably get to it this week. Or next. Come to think of it, at the above mentioned WikiWednesday meetup I'll look for the opportunity to raise the question of whether a category tree of songs by topic ought to be made. Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023

[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mobile App for Commons

[edit]

Dear Jim, my phone offered me another app. By the way, don't know why it told me to add payment method (I skipped it) I believe it's for donations to WIKI. But I'm need donations myself. Can't say it's perfectly intuitive, but I liked it's interface. It has map (which remember the location of my last photo) unfortunately it doesn't' read geotag data from phone. Yes, I enabled it in my phone. It links photo to WIKIdata, it can be edited then, so I'll use it. It's right step for so-called, hypothetical, InstaWIKIgram GK tramrunner RU (talk) 03:00, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you want, we can discuss it on my talk page here, or in English WIKIpedia page.

West 87th Street Garden
Since my talk page has 55 watchers, @GK tramrunner RU: more of our colleagues will see what we say in mine than yours. They can intervene when I say something wrong. Since it's about Commons, better to use my Commons page, rather than one of my WP pages. Maybe we can meet somewhere that has Wi-Fi, and compare what we've got on laptop and phone, outdoors if good weather; indoors if bad. I know of a few fairly good locations in Manhattan, and of course BPL Main. And my favorite restaurant when I'm in Brooklyn Heights.
The name of the Wikimedia Commons App for Android is "Wikimedia Commons" and it is published by the Wikimeda Foundation. If you don't have that, I don't know what you have. I used it today to upload this picture. Google Play Apps Store
I don't get banner ads from the Wikimedia Foundation, because I'm an old-time editor and have opted out. No problem if you skip the donation thing; paying the Foundation is completely voluntary; it's a public charity corporation.
I am surprised if the Wikimedia Commons App does not read your GPS location as Google Maps and other apps do. Perhaps one of our colleagues who are watching this can offer an explanation. Do the geocoordinates appear in the EXIF data of your pictures? Jim.henderson (talk) 06:53, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am not an expert in phones. Maybe EXIF, maybe other formats. Generally speaking, my current phone - I received by special offer in T-Mobile. (trade in your old flip phone, and get a new) It make nice pictures anyway. Also, I am interested not only in trains and walks. I am interested musical bands of 80ies, on which I was grown up, and on forgotten things, which surrounded me. My father was a musician, that's why I know something from inside. Unfortunately I am much more proficient in Russian bands, but de facto most of their repertoire comes from West, and they just created Russian texts. Some did like this, some composed their own music. w:Krugozor is a magazine with phonograph records, we used to have in that life.
GK tramrunner RU (talk) 16:41, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Alas, @GK tramrunner RU: pop music is a matter in which my knowledge is poor even for American bands and I know nothing of Russian ones.
I would like to examine your smartphone to see why it does not show GPS geotags. It is a very convenient feature. Also, when looking at a picture in Wikimedia Commons, there is an easy tool for using a map to insert the correct location. If you look at the column of blue links at the left side of the page, there is a "Tools" section and a "Location tool" link. This will let you zoom and click on a map that comes from our friends at OpenStreetMap to insert the coordinates. I learned of this several years ago in Montreal. During a break between talks in Wikimania, I sat next to another Wikian and complained about how difficult it was to insert geotags. He showed me how to do it. He had invented this tool, so he was eager to know how useful it was. A couple years later I taught it to someone at Wikiconference North America in Boston. If you have trouble with it, we can meet and I can show it to you. Jim.henderson (talk) 23:42, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes there is a location tool, and it shows where am I but don't know why - my photos are not geotagged. GK tramrunner RU (talk) 02:58, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I've tested my photo (made by my phone) on another site, and no - location didn't appear.
So the issue is with my camera. I wonder why it doesn't geotag photos. GK tramrunner RU (talk) 03:13, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Now, everything is right, I went deep in camera setting, and turned on location on my camera. Now all works nicely but don't know why all my photos get in those unwanted categories. Like this

Use of NYT Building Atrium Photo

[edit]

Dear Jim,

I hope you're well! I came across this photo on wiki commons https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelia_Oberlander#/media/File:Atrium_NY_Times_Building_jeh.JPG . I help urban planning ad architecture lecturers make courses on certain topics for an urban planning education company, and feel this would be perfect to add during one of our lecturer's courses! Though I see it's under the Creative Commons License, I was wondering if you'd be comfortable with us using it if we give you on-screen credit in the video when referencing this atrium? The other requirement for the license (mainly providing the full link) is difficult to do on video, so I wanted to check if we had your permission to use it with only the on-screen credit, and if so whether you'd like a different on screen credit other than "Photo courtesy of Jim Henderson."

Thanks for considering!

- Jacob Lee Johnson Jjbrasco (talk) 19:42, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Atrium
@Jjbrasco: Sure; no problem. I have answered also in your own Talkpage, and you can answer in either if you like. I am pleased at the idea of my photo being used to teach. My pictures have appeared in various news sites, magazines and educational TV shows, and in at least one each of book and movie. The correct credit is to "Jim.henderson via Wikimedia Commons" but the shorter version is also okay. Either in a text at bottom or top while the picture is being shown, or in a title/acknowledgement crawl at the end of the video. Heck I could even downgrade the license so you don't have to do that much.Jim.henderson (talk) 02:20, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

[edit]

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Photography Meetup in Jersey City

[edit]

Jim,

I'm trying again to get the hang of talk pages. So let me try this again. I would like to include a photograph for the May 20th event announcement (preferably one of you, but anything you select is fine). Also, some text to include. Any info on a particular project would be good too. I will post on Meetup.com and Facebook. The text I am thinking about ...

Jim Henderson is a Wikipedian, Wikimedia Commons Photographer, and avid cyclist from Wikipedia NYC. He will present to us what Wikidata is and it impact on the world and how to contribute you photographs and other files to the service. He will show us various tools such as "shoot me" and Wikimedia Commons. His links are: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Jim_Henderson_(Wikipedian) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Jim.henderson Schwartzray (talk) 12:58, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Jim Henderson (Wikipedian)
All righty; we had communication uncertainties at both ends except I don't have the excuse of working in unfamiliar software. Wikipedia English is the encyclopedia. UserːJim.henderson the English Wikipedia editor has his own User Page and User Talk page in English Wikipedia. Wikimedia Commons is the picture bureau. It's not quite the same website, and this UserːJim.henderson the Commons photographer / cat wrangler has a User Page and User Talk Page here, separate from the encyclopedia one, even though both of us are the same silly old duffer.
As it happens, this question came up in this morning's Commons Photographers Zoom meeting in connection with the new "Movement Charter" which is supposed to be sort of like a federal democratic constitution for all these Sites, Projects, Chapters and other autonomous bits. So, the question arises, do UserːJim.henderson in English Wikipedia and UserːJim.henderson in Wikimedia Commons and UserːJim.henderson in Wikidata each vote, or does each vote count as only one third of a vote, or do I get only one vote in one constituency? Some non profit corporations try to operate as a federation, and a few try to operate as sort of a democracy, but our Wikimedia empire is made of many disparate, sort of democratic elements, and I don't see how it can be put together to make any degree of fairness and workability. Fortunately we have many industrious, smart, well-meaning wikipoliticians worrying about these matters.
Meanwhile I've been busy all week starting with the eclipse in Rochester, and various meetings and such starting a couple hours after my return. This afternoon's Philadelphia zoomcall
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Philadelphia/WikiSalon_2024-04-13 here will leave me with an empty week in my calendar. With any luck I'll start catching up on my backlog of new photo editing, uploading, curating old photos, checking my 5000 watchlisted articles here in ENWP (English Wikipedia), etc.
The rest of my reply here, I copied from the one in English Wikipedia, with minor updates.
The two links you gave are good. A few links that I had in the following paragraphs are red because Commons doesn't have quite the same internal pages as English Wikipedia.
". . . . He will tell us what the Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons sites are about, and their impact on the 300+ Wikipedias and the rest of the world of free information. He will show how to contribute your photos and other kinds of knowledge such as words and data. He will show us tools such as the "WikiShootMe" Webpage and "Wikimedia Commons" Android app for pictures. . . ."
I've lengthened your two sentences into three, so feel free to chop away any excess. Or add; whatever. As you saw in Commons, we have plenty of pictures of me; problem is they all make me look old. Well, yeah.
For WD and photo demos, I like to use a fresh example. Presumably the building where we meet has no Wikidata item or Commons picture, and fails to meet the criteria of WP:NOTABILITY. Thus, it will work nicely if you find the data (street address, construction date, owner, business tenants, height and no, of course we don't need all of those and might use any other data) beforehand. With some of that, we can build the WD item before everyone's eyes. Or some other building or old (before 20th century) statue or monument for which we can step outside and snap a picture. I like built structures because they have locations.
As usual in talk pages, any talkpage WP:STALKER is welcome to butt in here with questions, corrections, ideas, whatever. For those people, we're talking about a meeting of a photo club near City Hall in Jersey City on May 20. At least, I think that's correct. Now I'm getting sleepy and won't search for the club's webpage. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:54, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
All right; we had a lunch meeting today. The relations among Wikimedia Foundation, English Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata are kind of odd or we might say irregular, as are other aspects of Wikipolitics. WP grew wildly, early in the century, making a complex maze of software tools, semi-autonomous websites, corporate cultures, and various related user groups, technical communities, interest groups, and affiliates. But you've spent a career in the research library business, which is far older yet has similar political complexities. I hope the bits of background I gave you helped.
I'll be at your Jersey City Photography Meetup on Monday, May 20, 7PM. When the date gets closer I'll do a bit of advertising in relevant talk pages of ENWP and Commons with street address and links to your Web pages and whatever else. That will probably bring a few curious Wikimedia NYC people in, who will want to discuss more extensive cooperation.
Maybe we will meet for lunch again before that. Meanwhile there will be WMNYC meetings on April 25, May 8, May 18, and later. Some are small; some large. Even when these have an official theme, we may be able to stir up interest in anything Wiki-related. Darn it; last week's modest-sized meeting looked like librarians were plotting to take over Wikipedia. Not that this would be a fate worse than death. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:04, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks it was a helpful meeting last Monday. I won't be able to attend April 15th or May 18th. But I can come on May 8th. I have set up the links to the event.

The location is AndCo at 201 Montgomery, Jersey City on the Second Floor, turn right as you get off the elevator, then turn left and go all the way down the hall to the Stephen Hawking Room. 96.242.171.247 15:41, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, Ray. Montgomery Street has a few Wikidata points with neither article nor picture. We ought to snap a few pix with phone and real camera to demonstrate uploading and curating. And maybe put one or two into Wikipedia and even create a Wikidata item or two or wait until another time for that. Wikimedia Commons is not one of the big online picture collections; we only have about a hundred million whilst the big ones have a few billions. However, ours have, on average, better metadata and better hope of being found by someone who wants to use them to illustrate something.
I had a minor illness in the days after our meeting and suspect the omelet I ate. It slowed even my editing and stopped me from wanting to go anywhere. I'm back to the proper power of a feeble old man now and intend to ride in the annual Tour de Staten Island tomorrow and snap some pictures.
Our mutual friend @Kosboot: is a great guy but he's a librarian and not a photographer, and he tends to look at pictures through the eye of a data organizer. Indeed with his help Wikidata is becoming ever more useful to photographic metadata, but for now photographers are better off looking at pictures first through the eye of Wikimedia Commons. As I said, maybe we will get to do some Wikidata things on May 20, especially if we can all get together. I'll offer some choices at the meeting and learn what they will want to hear first. Oh, maybe since he more speaks your language than I do, he can do better things with you than I can, in Wikidata and metadata matters. Whatever.
I see you have made me a Facebook co-organizer of the May 20 meeting. Maybe I'll find time to learn what a co-organizer is supposed to do, but like many Wikians I have already given myself more jobs than I can handle. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:31, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Jim, I search for Montgomery Street in Wikidata and found nothing. I found Jersey City, but no mention of Montgomery Street. How did you find those points? Also, how are you feeling now. I am available for lunch next week anytime. Lastly, don't worry about the "co-organizer" title. It should read co-host, or presenter. But social media doesn't care about proper wording. Schwartzray (talk) 21:14, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, that's interesting. I don't much try to search for text in Wikidata, so don't know entirely how it searches. Possibly it doesn't look in statements except in the statements of Label, Description and AKA. Which means it does not bring up items that merely have that in their street address. This differs from Commons picture files, which don't have a fixed place for street addresses, and most do not give a street address, but if it's there, the search will find it. Here's an item I already knew about: (Maybe there's a way to show it that doesn't make it a box). This church is on Montgomery St and the WD item gives that as part of the street address, but my search doesn't find it.

Initially I didn't even try to ask WD about the street. Instead, what I wanted was to find likely targets along the walk from the train station to the meeting place. So, I brought up WikiShootMe and told it to search for Jersey City. I scrolled around until I found Montgomery street, and followed that west from Grove Street as it passed red dots. The church was one of the red dots. So, searching from a WD page, the search isn't very comprehensive. There are also red dots for items that have coords that put them near Montgomery Street but the item has no street address.

So, in making a WD item for a building, best to give its street address as a Street Address Statement, and also as a AKA statement so searchers will find it that way. I think we will find many similar gaps, in part because the majority of WD items are not created by hand; rather they are swept up in mass database imports of such things as municipal Department of Buildings records or Church registries. They all have different formats which some Wikidatan studied and figured a way to convert. Some were in handwriting and are badly OCRed. But, buildings always are somewhere, even if it has no street or street address, so each such WD item ought to have coords so our maps including WSM see it. That makes WikiShootMe an even more important tool than I thought.

Anyway we'll be dealing with more photos than targets. Overall there are about as many items as photos, but most WD items are not places or buildings, and millions of them are incapable of being photographed. In turn, most WD items that have a photograph have many photos that the WD item does not, and need not, link to. And most of our photos show a subject that has no WD item, and even if they do have an item, it usually doesn't say so. So, the various kinds of potential connections, usually do not actually happen. And to think, one of the great virtues of Wikimedia Commons is, it is better catalogued than the bigger picture collections. That certainly doesn't put those others in a good light. Some of our librarian friends may have a better idea how to find things through Wikidata queries.

As for me, I'm healthy as a horse, or rather a horse thrice as old as horses ever get. Couple days ago I became exhausted after biking only fifteen miles, but extenuating circumstances (hills and chill) apply. I hope you are doing similarly well, Ray. Next week I have tentatively, no appointments. Perhaps Wednesday, 1 May would be a good target for lunch if the pleasant long range weather forecast holds. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:00, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ah. I see you used the map in Wikishootme to find it. I am available on the 1st. I have an appointment that morning on the upper eastside. So any time after that is good. Schwartzray (talk) 12:42, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Permission to use photo

Jim, You took a great photo of the Park Plaza apartments in the Bronx that I would like to use with attribution in a website that I hope to launch 5/1/24 called BronxArtDecoApartmentHouseArchive. For more details please contact me at badaha.org@gmail.com. Thanks J5hbx J5hbx (talk) 20:22, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry; I have been busy lately due to an out of town photo trip and a minor illness and prep for a speech to a photo club and other things, so I wasn't paying attention to either my E-mail or my Talk Pages.
Yes, I put three photos in Category:Park Plaza Apartments (New York) in 2011. It is indeed a splendid building though my main reason for biking through there was to get pictures relevant to an abandoned train station in its basement. Still haven't photographed that. Anyway, if you look at each photo (click on its name) you will see that all of them are "CC0 Universal Public Domain" which means you can use them for any purpose good or evil and credit me or not. Attribution would be pleasant; it should credit "Jim.henderson via Wikimedia Commons" or via Wikipedia. Perhaps I'll visit again and see if I can snap a better picture. Manhattan request

[edit]

Hello - I've been wanting a photo of a Manhattan building, and I posted a request on Commons:File requests. But I've since realized that the page likely doesn't get much attention from photographers, so I took matters into my own hands - I managed to find you through 'Wikipedians in Manhattan' and you've taken many local photos as of late. So I would like to humbly ask if you are able to fulfill the request, which is 286 Madison Ave in Midtown. (If you can't, that's OK!) Sceeegt (talk) 22:56, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ah. I see it has no ENWP page nor, more important, Wikidata item with coordinates. The latter is what puts it on the WikiShootMe map that many of us normally use to hunt for targets. That's the problem with asking individuals to go through an area where thousands normally pass every day including an occasional WSM user. Anyway I might get around to giving it a WD item myself, today or tomorrow but don't know when next I'll be visiting Mad & 40th and checking out the various dots in that neighborhood on the WSM map. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:08, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks. I am not aware of Wikidata and the WSM feature so thanks for putting that up. Though as I noted on File Requests, I prefer a landscape shot similar to this non-free one to be able to use on a Wikipedia article as a company HQ, instead of a full shot of the building. WSM probably won't have specifics like these? Sceeegt (talk) 17:12, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry; I was in a foul mood before breakfast. So, having eaten, I made a reasonably adequate Wikidata item , walked a mile and a bit to Madison & 40th, and snapped it. I was slightly late to get the best sun, and I hadn't read the request that suggested just the bottom few floors. I also did not have the File Requests page on my watchlist; it's there now. I added a bullet point about putting coordinates in WD, as I think that's easier and more reliable than trying to find the right photographer, though slower. Both, really, should be used.
The ideal time for good sun on that building is about Noon, Daylight Saving Time, and the ideal season is early summer. Now that it has a picture, the question is less urgent than it was. Until next week I'll be doing things including teaching Wikiediting at Lehman in the Bronx on Saturday, but probably some sunny day next week I'll have business in Midtown East and snap another. Jim.henderson (talk) 19:42, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Much appreciated. It's still valuable on its own to have a full shot of the building on Wikidata. Hope to see more shots soon. Sceeegt (talk) 00:00, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Jim, I wonder if you've had an opportunity yet for another shot of the building at Madison and 40th? Sceeegt (talk) 23:30, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Goodness; I forgot all about it and haven't been to that neighborhood since then. Been busy teaching at edit-athons, leading a photo walking tour in Greenwich Village, arranging a meeting about Wikidata at a publishing house near Canal Street and something in Brooklyn Heights, and stuff like that. Maybe eventually. Ages ago this area was one of my regular haunts; not so much in recent years. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:30, 4 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's alright. Maybe eventually, I hope. Sceeegt (talk) 00:34, 4 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

You AGAIN!

[edit]

I am getting the hang of this (what?). Loving this working/joking session. You are a cool cat Jim! Urahoneza (talk) 22:13, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

File:Hudson Riverfront 9-11 Memorial HDR 2022 jeh.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello

[edit]

Glad we linked up at the BPL. Robertedwardkroll (talk) 21:44, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, here we are Jim.henderson (talk) 21:46, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What we did last night, copied from an E-mail.

It was a pleasant afternoon and evening. The daytime portion at the library was just me and Robert, and eventually productive. Preliminary problems with Windows power configurations being set for maximum speed and minimum battery life were alleviated, but need further study for a more precise compromise and perhaps more thorough understanding.

Getting down to the Wikimedia Commons website, we covered the use of User Page and User Talk Page, which we use for elementary communication among Wikkians, and a brief peek at the obscurely named but useful Village Pump.

For the business of handling photos, both Android and Windows suffered interference from added software and special configurations that are unfamiliar to me. Eventually we discovered an awkward work-around that allowed us to upload from Windows. Probably a better way can be discovered. Adobe Photoshop, in particular, might actually turn out to be helpful rather than merely an obstacle that can be circumvented. Certainly I had far less trouble teaching myself to handle either a Windozer that had no added picture software, or an Android phone that had the Commons App but no enhancements beyond that. Perhaps the things Robert added were designed for pictures that were to be displayed on the screen or printed, rather than sent to another computer.

We also did an elementary introduction to the use of the Commons category tree. Commons:Categories

There is a video about categories that goes pretty deep: Youtube We also did something with Depicts and Description and Caption and some other crazy but useful things. Oh, and Geocoordinates, one of my favorite things. Yeah, it all can become deep quickly, but he was pretty much getting it.

Then, to the restaurant, Fred having arrived and Rose very soon after. Good friends, good conversation, good food. Near the end of eating. Sammy arrived and Jeanette shortly after, and the discussions really got going. I think we should do similarly next month and maybe also invite more participants.

Meanwhile my next Wikidiscussion will be Saturday at Noon, merely the monthly Zoom call, so not as jolly as a dinner. This will be with two Philadelphia Wikkians and their friends. Usually the majority who participate are librarians, and always everyone helps us learn something. If you intend to join, you should sign up. Wikisalon page

Next week I've got nothing planned, thus far, with many people being busy with holiday matters. This might give me a chance to catch up more on uploading and curating images. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:20, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
