As with all of User:Drex C137's images, the bonding is incorrect. In acetate, both carbon–oxygen bonds are equivalent (not one single/one double). Have File:Acetate-anion-3D-balls.png as correct DMacks (talk) 21:41, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- Dear DMacks, I have noticed that you consider my illustrations of molecules as wrong and qualify them with a "nonsense", I would like you to explain to me how exactly should I illustrate the molecule? I'll gladly upload an improved version Drex C137 (talk) 22:21, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- In this case, you drew one of the carbon–oxygen bonds as single and the other double. That is false. They are both equal in length electron-count, an average of single and double. Call it "1.5" (because that's what chemists do call it), due to resonance. You don't need to bother redrawing to correct it because we already have a high-quality image that correctly illustrates it, which I placed in the eswiki article. Commons has a pre-existing massive collection of images in many styles and types of details of tens of thousands of simple and complex molecules ready for you to use. - I do not at all doubt your intention. But the outcome is the problem. And the outcome is what is published and visible to our readers. They deserve correct info. Science is not something that can be guessed. Making something "pretty" is only worthwhile if there is a valid factual basis for what is being illustrated. It's very easy to tell a program "make a model like this", and it will mindlessly do what you tell it. That is why it is important to learn about the topic, and look for what others have already done, before spending time doing it yourself. DMacks (talk) 15:40, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

The life-sized figure was created for display at Osaka Prefectural Museum of Yayoi Culture. Osaka Prefectural Museum of Yayoi Culture opened in 1991. Therefore, the figure is presumed to be under copyright protection.
The United States Copyright Law does not allow free reproductions of non-architectural artistic works located in public spaces (this includes monuments and statues), so photographs of non-architectural modern artistic works are not considered as "free works" on Wikimedia Commons. Nnkrkrhhdi (talk) 10:43, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

- Comment Artanisen (uploader), please stop infringing other people's copyrights. --Nnkrkrhhdi (talk) 11:22, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- Comment Hello, the photo was taken in good faith. The life-sized figure could be made quite recent. I don't have details about that sorry. I support the deletion if it violates copyright. One argument is why aren't other photo's of miniature towns and figures in museums deleted? For example this photo. There are more photos of Museum Figures here. - Artanisen (talk) 11:30, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Artanisen: Under Japanese copyright law, a photograph in which a work is the subject is treated as a copy or a derivative work of the work in which the subject is the subject, and the copyright of the work in which the subject is the subject extends to the use of the photograph. And under Japanese copyright law, copyright is protected for 70 years after the creator's death. The United States copyright law has provisions similar to those of Japan. Have you read the Commons:Derivative works? --Nnkrkrhhdi (talk) 00:25, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Nnkrkrhhdi: Why are all these life-sized photos of Museum Figures in Japanese Museums allowed on Commons? The Hyōgo Prefectural Museum of Archaeology opened in 2007. The wax figures of the Takamatsu Heike Monogatari Wax Museum are probably not antique either. The Edo-Tokyo Museum opened 1993. There are various photos of life-sized figures of that museum on Commons. So why is for example this photo of life-sized figures still on Commons? Yes I read the derivatives works. If you look in this category Museum Figures by country there are many photos of life-sized figures on Commons. This photo could fall under freedom of panorama (probably not) or not copyrightable since it is based on ancient clothing. -Artanisen (talk) 02:28, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Artanisen: Just because others ignore the rules doesn't mean you can ignore them.
- This photo could not fall under the freedom of panorama (FoP). Have you read the Commons:Derivative works? This guideline says "Check Commons:Freedom of panorama." Have you checked this page?
- The United States Copyright Law does not allow FoP of non-architectural artistic works located in public spaces. Also, Japanese Law does not allow FoP of artistic works located in room. The figure is not a building. Also, the figure is located in room. I explained this issue and the Wikipedia:屋外美術を被写体とする写真の利用方針 to you on November 28, 2021, didn't I? Please, remember. --Nnkrkrhhdi (talk) 08:16, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Nnkrkrhhdi: You're correct that it probably does not fall under freedom of panorama. The clothing is derivate work of ancient clothing during the time of Queen Himiko which could mean it's not copyrightable. So why do you single out this image and ignore all the other images of life-sized figures? That is unfair as if you're picking on a specific user. I asked you the question why are there many photos of Museum Figures still on Commons? Why did you not request the removal of those images? Please speak to me in English only since I understand that language well. - Artanisen (talk) 08:31, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- The other files aren't relevant for this discussion. There are too many files on Commons for anybody to check them all, so these files might simply have been missed. There might be some specific reason for (some of) those other files to be allowed, such as explicit permission from the museum or the artist, perhaps even some more general defence, which could be relevant here. Many of them might be copyright violations and, if so, should also be nominated for deletion. –LPfi (talk) 09:17, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- Well those images have been on Commons for many more years than this one. Hence that causes a misunderstanding that such images of life-sized figures are allowed. If there are exceptions for those image then it should be mentioned on the file pages. I think nobody bothered to verify such things. So singling out this image is a double standard. Anyway, the last argument is that this figure is not copyrightable since it's derivative work based on ancient clothing and the figure is generic. -Artanisen (talk) 09:33, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, it can be misleading, and yes, I guess nobody checked those files. But this is not about double standards; all files here should be in the public domain or properly licensed. We simply don't have the manpower to check all files. Most copyvios are seen by those patrolling recent uploads, but otherwise it is just about stumbling into a suspect file, e.g. as it is used in an article one is reading. Perhaps somebody is going to check the categories you pointed out, but that requires dedicating some time. Personally I am not going to do it, as I know neither US nor Japanese copyright law. –LPfi (talk) 09:59, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- Right, in that case we can delete this file, but if the other life-size figure photos remain on Wiki Commons then it's easy for others to assume that it's permitted. We can agree with the deletion of this photo. It's always good to have a discussion about an image to check multiple angles. However, Nnkrkrhhdi has a history of hounding me for any mistake while conveniently ignoring other photos such as in this category of photos of Museum Figures. That is a double standard and makes other users uncomfortable. - Artanisen (talk) 15:35, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

- Artanisen says "this figure is not copyrightable since it's derivative work based on ancient clothing and the figure is generic". But Himiko lived in the 3rd century, so there are no detailed records of her clothing. The clothes of this figure was based on an imagination by Osaka Prefectural Museum of Yayoi Culture. And this figure was made after the 1990s. Under Japanese copyright law, copyright is protected for 70 years after the creator's death. --Nnkrkrhhdi (talk) 16:09, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

- Comment Nnkrkrhhdi yes I have participated in the Wikimedia projects since March 2006. And the far majority of all my contributions (hundreds of images as well as referenced article information) are approved and appreciated! You show zero appreciation for that fact. Mistakes are part of being human which is something you forget. Your behavior of hounding other users is extremely rude. You also ignore most other FOP cases of photos of life size museum figures which is a double standard. -Artanisen (talk) 16:13, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Photo uploaded in 2018 in one large batch donated from the National Archive with all images released as CC0. Now five years later it turns out, that in the mean time the National Archive both updated the description of the file and the description of the photographer and reassessed the permission.
Hereby in the source documentation at the National Archive the photographer was identified and updated from "Photographer Unknown / Anefo" to "Zeylemaker, Co / ANP". Permission has been upgraded from CC0 to "under copyright".
I think we should follow this documentation update: With Co Zeijlemaker (1907-1964) as photographer the image is under copyright until 2034 in the EU. Mdd (talk) 23:55, 11 April 2023 (UTC) / 08:55, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Obviously not a Youtube screenshot since it has EXIF. But starting a DR since the Youtube video does predate this upload and due to COM:FOP Japan. King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 18:44, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- Commented on the other DR for the same user: it seems perfectly plausible that the uploader and the YouTube user are the same person, especially as their ja-wiki POV seems to match up with the on in the YouTube video. But the user says they have permission from the uploader in a ja-wiki noticeboard, which indicates someone else took this picture (and the others on the same model iPhone). I don't think there any FOP issues, since the Japanese restrictions on freedom of panorama only covers "artistic works", and this is a purely informational sign, with text and simple graphics of subway route and train cars. Adeletron 3030 (talk) 18:59, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Adeletron 3030: FoP is not a restriction, but an exemption to copyright policy. If a country does not mention FoP in its laws (e.g. COM:FOP Saudi Arabia), then we don't say that there are "no FoP restrictions"; by default, everything is FoP-restricted if not explicitly stated. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 22:08, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- Delete as no-permission copying of copyrighted documents. --Netora (talk) 03:39, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
- Keep I've already stated my thoughts of FOP and the image's provenance, but assuming the uploader is the image creator, I don't think there's anything here that's eligible for copyright. COM:TOO Japan is pretty high, I believe comparable to the U.S. TOO where a graphical element has to be pretty complex to be eligible for copyright — here, we're just looking at simple diagrams. And while I might have been clumsy in my wording, FOP in Japan applies to anything that's non-artistic, i.e. purely utilitarian like an informational sign with simple diagram of a subway route and train cars. Adeletron 3030 (talk) 13:34, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
- Delete no commercial COM:FOP Japan for any copyrightable work that is not an architecture. The author of the sign with illustration is likely not yet dead for more than 70 years. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 19:03, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
- But is it above the threshold of originality? It's just text and simple line drawings, and TOO appears to be higher in Japan. Adeletron 3030 (talk) 19:02, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- The subway route map is deformed (ref. another version) so the individuality can be admitted. As per Japanese court's opinion, the originality of a work can be admitted if the work embodies some individuality of the author. Even the text in this picture can be copyrightable as the text is long enough and there's no FOP (even non-commercial) for text. I vote Delete here.
- COM:TOO Japan only gives some examples of text logo. Japanese court have a strict criterion on typeface and finely designed short text as per their Supreme court's case law. But for other works like slogan, photo or graphic, the TOO seems to be not that high. Even slogan like "ママの膝より チャイルドシート ボク安心" (Booster seat is safer for me than mom's knee) was ruled to be copyrightable. (ref. 東京地判平成13年5月30判時1752-141) Teetrition (talk) 10:51, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Full of every possible piece of fascist/hate imagery imaginable (Nazis, Apartheid, Confederate States, KKK, Imperial Japan, Fascist Italy, Francoist Spain, Rhodesia); evidence at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Catfish_Jim_and_the_soapdish#Not_going_to_ask_you is extremely damning and removes all possibility of good faith Dronebogus (talk) 13:34, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- Delete as per nom. Yann (talk) 16:48, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose for now, Commons don't have any rule against galleries with historically disputable images (such as nazi etc. images here). Also COM:CENSORSHIP states However, Commons is not censored, and legitimately includes content which some users may consider objectionable or offensive. The policy of "Commons is not censored" means that a lawfully-hosted file, which falls within Commons' definitions of scope, will not be deleted solely on the grounds that it may not be "child-friendly" or that it may cause offence to you or others, for moral, personal, religious, social, or other reasons. Forementioned applies to every userspace as no restrictions were placed in the policy. Also no harmful or other hate alike content is in the gallery. As every community is idependent itself, I wouldn't delete this page because of wrongdoings of this user on enwiki. Was gallery used in crosswiki spam etc.? A09 (talk) 14:11, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- “No harmful or hate alike [sic] content”? The page is peppered with white supremacist imagery and the link above discusses the user’s apparent connections to Stormfront and the KKK! Dronebogus (talk) 18:36, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- Maybe I would need to clarify: if it weren’t a hate speech or similara acts of violence against WMF editors, otherwise no. If this gallery is deleted we should also delete every other nazi/KKK whatever picture. A09 (talk) 06:27, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- That is the question: How is favorite meant here? Does it mean the user likes the files for the quality or because the user likes the content? GPSLeo (talk) 10:31, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- Your question is pretty much pointless as your statement is not a valid reason for deletion. A09 (talk) 10:35, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- We do not have a specific rule for this because supporting racism, genocides and war crimes is against the general m:Terms of use. GPSLeo (talk) 11:15, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- Per your logic, all categories of controversial organizations should be deleted, which I would also oppose. I don't see how this gallery supports racism and war crimes. IMO including a Third Reich flag in your gallery only to be marked as racism is a bit of a stretch. Gallery does not contain any image depicting war crimes (ie. Nanking massacre), but just persons themselves.
- Also per m:Terms of Use, please see article 3 paragraph a): "Because we provide a wide array of content that is produced or gathered by fellow users, you may encounter material that you find offensive, erroneous, misleading, mislabeled, or otherwise objectionable", which does not prohibit any such gallery and is similar to COM:CENSORSHIP. A09 (talk) 13:25, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- I am not against having such files on Commons or in galleries. The problem is the "favorite" in the name. The relevant question is: What does "favorite" mean in this case? Does it mean, "I like the organization" oder does it mean "I like the file to illustrate the topic". GPSLeo (talk) 14:49, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- Why did we then even open this DR? Wouldn't be a move discussion much better? IMO filename is okay (whatever the reason may be). A09 (talk) 17:31, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- This is missing the point. Based on what I mentioned above the user probably is actually supportive of these ideologies. Dronebogus (talk) 18:53, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- His political orientation plays no role in this DR to be honest. I don't see it as a valid reason to delete the gallery unless a strong pattern of him using this page as an attack page appears (but still probably very unlikely as gallery doesn't contain any images of actual war crimes). A09 (talk) 19:21, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

- Keep Tabular data and map data is perfectly in scope. One of the main scopes is to host content to be used on other Wikimedia projects and this data is meant to be used there. Otherwise we would need a total new Wikimedia project just for tables and map data. --GPSLeo (talk) 12:12, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- @GPSLeo: The problem isn't so much that it's "tabular data", it's that the data isn't sourced, lacks a description, no way to verify if it's correct, and can be edited by anyone at there whim to say whatever they want it to. Fumikas Sagisavas' says the data comes from individual weather stations and the "files" seem to be sourced to a website that contains information from weather stations, but realistically that's not a source for .tab file and it's ridiculous to expect people to parse out that (extremely obtuse if I'm being honest) website to figure out if the information in the tabular data is correct or not. Compare that to an image of a map where there's a description, source, and other relevant information that helps people to determine what exactly they are looking, the background of the file, where it came from, how accurate it is Etc. Etc. To the point that it's completely ridiculous, bad faithed analogy.
- Also, the last time I checked Wikipedia articles can and do contain tables. I don't think they can load .tab files directly anyway. At least for articles about geographical locations the weather data is usually or always manually entered. So there's no reason this information can't just be added to whatever article in Wikipedia it's going to be used in and they can deal with the sourcing issues, verify that it's correct, fix the information if it isn't, Etc. Etc. That shouldn't be our job though. Just an FYI, I'd probably have a different opinion if .tab files weren't editable and contained the same summary information every other type of media does, but they are and don't have that information, which IMO is a problem and one that warrants the deletion requests. --Adamant1 (talk) 14:36, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- "Ncei.noaa.gov New York City" is an acceptable source. The long citation (XMACIS2; Northeast RCC CLIMOD 2, part of the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).Downloaded using GHCN ID "USW00094728" (NY CITY CENTRAL PARK, NY).), that is of course missing on some of the pages, is even sufficient for a scientific article. As an example: The suggested citation for the German DWD is a text like "DWD Climate Data Center (CDC): Historical hourly station observations of 2m air temperature and humidity for Germany, version v006, 2018.". That is not such a huge difference. If you argue against the data because is could be vandalized or manipulated by the author we would have to close the hole project. GPSLeo (talk) 14:56, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- Sure, but if someone goes to the "source" in Data:Ncei.noaa.gov/weather/New York City.tab it takes them to the main National Centers for Environmental Information website. Not the tab file or even an a page that contains it. That's like having an image that came from the NASA website, and instead of the source being the actual image it's just https://www.nasa.gov/. It might be fine for an un-editable image (even though I don't think it is), but we shouldn't expect people to have to search through a super obtuse website to verify that the information in the table is correct in real time (and correct it if it isn't) just because we can't provide a source to the actual file or at least the page it came from. That's not a "source." Nor is it within Commons' scope. Otherwise, how exactly is that any different then a Wikipedia article and/or someone doing research to write one? --Adamant1 (talk) 15:10, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
