Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:58, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Jacqke, curious to find out who these 3 young ladies are. Alumni of Shanghai Jiao Tong University? Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 06:16, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, Lotje, I really haven't found anymore than the names. I got those from a website https://m.douban.com/photos/photo/2255513861/ that the owner appears to have copies or reprints of the magazine. I assume the names were inside, but I haven't followed up on it. There is a digital collection available in China, which I am attempting to order...Jacqke (talk) 19:14, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
- Hello Jacqke, I added the image to my watchlist. Thanks for the detailed explanation. Lotje (talk) 04:49, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Lotje, You are welcome. Sorry I couldn't be of assistance on that. I do think that since the names don't trigger anything on searches that they were likely students.Jacqke (talk) 21:56, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

File:Miss L by Guan Zilan.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Guan Zilan in front of mandolin paintings.jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Guan Zilan in front of mandolin paintings.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

- Hi. Thank you for your message. I've tagged as well the picture you have suggested to me. Please note that published/unpublished is no matter since the copyright for paintings made in China depends only on the date of death of the painter. Kind regards, --Patrick Rogel (talk) 14:41, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Patrick Rogel, appreciate the clarification. I didn't know that paintings weren't included; I think the template might need to mention that distinction. My question going forward is that I have images of The Young Companion magazine from the 1930s which I intend to use to expand the article. The images show art (and sports and fashion and anything else you can make a photo spread about). Will these images also be off limits? Or is the version published as part of a magazine going to be ok, since they were already published with the artists permission? If you have any ideas, I'd appreciate it.Jacqke (talk) 15:28, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

Hy Hintermeister
[edit]I would propose this article for deletion. The content can be included in the Henry Hintermeister article. Charlesjsharp (talk) 10:33, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- Hello, @Charlesjsharp: . I would agree there is only one short article’s worth of information. I was forced to create two articles because of Wikidata linking. Wikidata won’t let me link two different people to the same Wikipedia article, nor one link to a redirect. The effect is that only one is included in library identity catalogs and online searches. The identity of the two separate artists has been blended together everywhere I look, and Wikidata should inject information about the father into the catalogs of the world’s biographical databases. I would prefer a single article, but don’t see how to do that without shorting one of the two artists. If you have an idea, that would be good, because I don’t see the two article remaining separate in the long run.Jacqke (talk) 12:42, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- If you believe that the two painters are both notable and worthy of an article (I've no idea) then there should be one for father and one for son, so rename the Hy articxle to the son. Charlesjsharp (talk) 17:22, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- That’s the course I’ll have to take. I know there’s material, but I need better sources. Thank you, Jacqke (talk)<

This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:European and Islamic musicians in 13th century playing stringed instruments.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

File tagging File:Patchbox Model 1803.JPEG
[edit]This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Patchbox Model 1803.JPEG. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Patchbox Model 1803.JPEG ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

[edit]Hi Jacqke: Thanks so much for your interesting note on this old image of mine. I had no idea about the name ‘’ghyaling’’ which, according to the Google Translate page means "healing" in Hindi. I have noticed that you have a real interest in Himalayan musical instruments - though I am not sure how wide your interests stretch.
Anyway, I have searched through the photos I have saved on my computer and saved 28 or so showing musical instruments in Himalayan regions, and would like to send them to you if they might be of any interest. If so, please send me your email address and I will send them to you as email attachments.
They are just snapshots I have taken on some of my travels. My wife, son and I lived in Dharamsala for a couple of years and we have travelled extensively in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Tibet. Unfortunately, i wasn't particularly looking for musical instruments to photograph, and they are certainly not of professional quality. But, I would be thrilled if they were of any use or help to you. I look forward to hearing from you. My email address is: wynhill2@bigpond.net.au
I send you my very warmest wishes for the holiday season and hope that you and your loved ones are well and safe in these uncertain times. Cheers, John Hill

We need your feedback!
[edit]Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!
I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.
We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.
Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.
Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.
Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. —Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 00:05, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
File:Lady Holding the 'Ektara' zither drum.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

[edit]Copyright status: File:Resurrection of Lazarus by Henry Ossawa Tanner.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Resurrection of Lazarus by Henry Ossawa Tanner.jpg.
Thank you. |

File:Greek Harp, 4th century B.C.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)
