[edit]This media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Petsmart001.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (

If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement
[edit]Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!
[edit]- ⧼Wikibase-terms/Onel5969⧽: Deutsch, Ελληνικά, English, français, magyar, italiano, македонски, 日本語, русский, svenska
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]
Thanks,

Dear Onel5969,
The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).
- In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:
- 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
- In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
- In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.

Your user page states that advice would be welcome, so...
[edit]Hi! I love some of those old pictures of Phoenix that you've been uploading, being a fan of old pictures myself. Here's a few things I would point out that might save some work for you and other people on commons:
- Date field should be the date of the work itself, not the upload date. See Commons:First_steps/Quality_and_description for more info.
- Avoid redundant or overly vague categories (Phoenix, Arizona is redundant if it's already in "Phoenix in the 1900s"). See COM:OVERCAT for more info.
- I believe there is effort underway to mass upload images from the Library of Congress, so you might not want to expend too much effort on those, unless you're in a hurry to use one in an article. :)
--Junkyardsparkle (talk) 05:31, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
@Junkyardsparkle: Hiǃ And absolutely, advice, hints, etc. are always welcome. Regarding your first point, I will remember that, absolutely. And on your second point, after having people add categories to items I uploaded, I had gotten exactly the opposite impression, that you should put as many possible categories on an item, in order to make it easier to find. I will look at your link, definitely. And regarding your third point, thanks for the info. I was going to get back to uploading images from the LOC, but will limit it only to ones I wish to use right away. Thanks for taking the time to help. Onel5969 (talk) 12:28, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
- I certainly didn't mean to imply that a photo shouldn't be in multiple categories, just not in parent categories of the more specific ones that it's in, as a rule - hopefully the provided link explains it well enough. Those general categories tend to become dumping grounds, being the easiest to find, and need diffusing into more specific cats from time to time... especially categories like "Phoenix", which is supposed to be about the mythical bird. That's what I was cleaning up when I saw your uploads - it's a fun way to see some random pictures at least. --Junkyardsparkle (talk) 17:58, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
- I made a few changes to the info section of File:Winfield & Helen Scott, 1900.jpg as a sort of example of what's nice to include from an image archive like that... basically, as much description as they give of the subject (since the idea with commons is for the files to be useful to posterity, beyond whatever your immediate purposes may be), and preferably a direct source link to that object, to make it easy for someone to find their way back to it. A stable reference URL is usually available on sites like that (upper left corner in this case). There are also some tricks for getting the highest resolution images possible from those types of AJAX viewers... let me know if you want gory details. :) --Junkyardsparkle (talk) 22:32, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
- Again thanks. Your Winfield example has giving me a good idea of what I'll do from now on when I upload. Onel5969 (talk) 22:03, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Category:Lakes in Arizona
[edit]Please note there is already a Category:Lakes of Arizona, so your new category is redundant. Also, you don't need to add the images directly to that category if the lake category is already in there. I've marked the new one with {{Category redirect}}. Thanks. —howcheng {chat} 20:27, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
Hi. Thanks for pointing that out. Thought it was strange there wasn't that category already. And thanks for cleaning up the mess. Quick question. On one of the files File:Tempe Town Lake (1).jpg, you deleted the category artificial lake, might I ask why? -- Onel5969 (talk) 22:19, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
- Ah, I was going to add the category to Category:Tempe Town Lake, but I'd forgotten, so that's done now. Here's a tip: if you can't find a category "X in Y" then try "X of Y" or "X from Y" (for people). It's usually one of those. —howcheng {chat} 16:14, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
ːThanks User:Howcheng for that, and also the tip. Onel5969 (talk) 17:36, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Hi, just wanted to point out that there's nothing to indicate authorship or licensing of the images on that page as stated in your uploads. In fact, if you click the links under the images, most of them are clearly copyrighted to someone else. You'll probably want to check all of those, as they may be copyright violations. Be careful not to assume that someone posting an image on a website is the author of that image... in fact, it's much better to assume the opposite unless there's a clear indication. --jnkyrdsprkl (talk) 21:24, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hi jnkyrdsprklǃ If you look at the bottom of the page, the site is clearly marked, "Contributions to http://jayworldgepgraphy.wikispaces.com/ are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 License". Am I missing something? If I am, since I am still trying to figure this all out, please let me know. --Onel5969 (talk) 22:02, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, but unfortunately, the pictures don't appear to be "contributions" by their authors, just images grabbed from elsewhere on the web, as indicated by the links appearing beneath the photos. If you view the linked pages, this one for instance, you'll often see that there's no indication of free licensing (in the linked example, there's even an explicit copyright notice, and clicking on the author's name leads to a page indicating that they would very much like to sell their photos). A similar situation is "flickrwashing", where photos are posted to that site with CC licenses, in spite of the uploader not being the author, and therefore not legally able to apply the license. Hope that makes sense. --jnkyrdsprkl (talk) 22:45, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation jnkyrdsprkl, I did not know that. I thought we only had to verify from the site we pulled it from. Will do the extra steps you suggest in the future. Could you mark those 5 photos for quick deletion then? Thanks. Onel5969 (talk) 17:50, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
- Since they're recent uploads, the easiest way to speedydelete them would be for you, as the uploader, to paste {{speedydelete|Uploader requests deletion (accidental copyvio).}} or similar into the file pages. This would avoid all the formalities involved with somebody else making the request, and a bunch of warnings on your talk page, etc... just make sure they're not in use on any pages first. Incidentally, you may or may not have noticed the recent influx of HABS/HAER photos from the Library of Congress... the housekeeping on them is still ongoing, and most are still in county categories at the moment... might be of interest to you. --jnkyrdsprkl (talk) 21:34, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

File tagging File:EveBrent.1959.jpg
[edit]This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:EveBrent.1959.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:EveBrent.1959.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
