Fresco of Apollon by Francesco Zugno in the foyer of the Teatro Grande in Brescia
Comment I'm glad you say that, this is trompe-l'œil and the painter Francesco Battaglioli did a perfect job because the ceiling is flat. The black spots on the right are floodlights I could not hide.--Wolfgang Moroder (talk) 06:09, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Good point :-) Sorry, I don't read Italian (for the title) though I think the word Trompe-l'œil is missing there. Still, there is "flat" and "flat", and the camera doesn't seem in the axis. The bottom and the sides are not symmetrical. To be honest, at first sight my eyes were attracted by the distracting black shape. That part could be cropped out. The two columns at the bottom are showing the same perspective, as if the picture was taken from the right -- Basile Morin (talk) 06:33, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm terribly sorry, I was tromped, the right part is missing. Trompe-l'oeil is in the English description, the other is just the filename. By the way I was going to delete my comment. You can see it in the other fotos of the painting.--Wolfgang Moroder (talk) 06:35, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Re-updated comment Yes, after looking at this view I realized my first impression was rather right. And it seems also possible to take the picture from the center, like here. Thanks for your comment. -- Basile Morin (talk) 06:56, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And at least I was fooled a short time at thinking it was a real trompe-l'oeil :-) Is maybe worth visiting again :-) Basile Morin (talk) 23:09, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well, every FPC regular knows that Basile and me often disagree, but when Basile is called a “seasoned user” I hope I am allowed to share this designation with him. Or am I already a rotten user, having been on Commons for six years longer? Who knows … ;–) But I agree that nobody should be intimidated by any other user, of course. •  Comment I have changed the gallery link from Other objects in landscapes to Natural#Netherlands because most similar photos are on the “Natural” gallery pages. Your description (“horizontal play of lines behind the sea wall at Paesens with a view of the Wadden, a unique tidal area”) confirms that this is a photo of the landscape/nature. The dobbe and the fence are objects, but they are integral parts of the landscape, so we can still put this into the “Natural” gallery. (Thanks to Cart for the confirmation!) SHORT DESCRIPTION
  •  Underexposed Yes, though the picture looks interesting -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:21, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's impossible to agree with the claim that this image is underexposed. This is clearly proven by the excellent visibility of every detail on the head louse's body - its tiny hairs, complex body texture, and even various color shades. The dark, almost black background is not an exposure error, but rather serves to highlight the main subject more clearly. The image's tonality is well balanced - we can clearly see details in both lighter and darker areas, confirming that the exposure is not incorrect. This lighting choice is intentional here, designed to give the image a slightly dramatic effect. If the picture were truly underexposed, we wouldn't be able to see such fine details and color tones that are now clearly visible. Janeklass (talk) 04:19, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disagree. You will see more details if the photo is better exposed. Currently the contrasts are very hard to distinguish, especially at thumbnail size.
Note that you can also see a lot of details here, although the photo is underexposed too. And that one was properly fixed.
Hard to hear that "it's impossible to agree with the claim that this image is underexposed" while the two first reviewers here both find the image too dark :-) Then above you write "This lighting choice is intentional here, designed to give the image a slightly dramatic effect" (by the way, I don't understand this dramatic intention. It's just a close-up of an animal, no special background / context). Sorry, clear light problem for me, in state -- Basile Morin (talk) 04:45, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have responded to the criticism and want the evaluators to know that the lighting choice here is clearly intentional. How you choose to evaluate it is up to you. Janeklass (talk) 04:56, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment It is too dark for my eyes. Charlesjsharp (talk) 09:58, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support It is a very fascinating image. The darkness is not a problem, as the object is clearly seen, and that seems more like a creative choice on this dark creature. I am thinking that maybe a square format would be better for this image... but I'm not sure. Kruusamägi (talk) 13:24, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support --Yann (talk) 13:40, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Sorry. I agree that there are dark photographs which do not tolerate an increasure of the exposure – reproductions of dark paintings, some gloomy atmospheric landcape photographs, low-key photos etc. However I fail to see why this would apply to this photo, despite of the explanations. I have played a bit with this JPEG file and can confirm that a careful increase of the brightness works very well when at the same time the light parts are dialed down a bit. If you have a raw image or a 16 bit TIFF file, this should work even better. Of course you have all right to keep your photo as you think it should be (so keep it!), but I cannot support it here. Sorry again, – Aristeas (talk) 10:25, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As I mentioned before, this solution was intentional. I did try making changes but wasn't satisfied with the result. I can see that opinions are divided on this one - and I suppose not everyone has to like the picture. It's clear that I won't get much support for this image, but that's okay. I'm already looking forward to when this period ends and I can submit my next works 🙂 Janeklass (talk) 13:28, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Small stained glass window from Sainte-Chapelle (King). Paris
  •  Oppose I am not a fan of stained glass photographed like this. The contrast and saturation has been pumped up too high so that the colours of the glass are exaggerated, and the details around the window are completely black. It doesn't look natural. I agree that many of the stained glass photos in the gallery have similar processing, but I don't think they should be FP either. This to me is an example of it being done right. Cmao20 (talk) 01:46, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Unfortunately an old image (2012) taken from an old camera (2008) with low resolution, no tripod, high ISO, and narrow DoF -- Basile Morin (talk) 08:03, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    •  Comment Dear Basile Morin, you have rated when, by what and under what conditions the photo was taken, but not any word about the image itself. Having read "Featured picture", I assumed that the pictures are rated here. Am I wrong? -- Ввласенко (talk) 09:41, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose And I'd like to add that "low resolution", "high ISO" and "narrow depth of field" directly concern the technical aspects of "the image itself", as you request. This photo was perhaps a fair candidate in 2012, but much less in 2024. And even at that time, a tripod would have helped to increase the quality. The edges are slightly blurry, especially at the top and at the left. The crop is very tight all around. Overall, it is a standard photo of stained glass, not an exceptional one, in my opinion -- Basile Morin (talk) 22:21, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Montanaia Valley in the Parco naturale delle Dolomiti Friulane
  •  Comment Just a nerdy note regarding the resolution: Some camera sensors deliver some more pixels than officially supported by the manufacturer. These extra pixels at the margins of the sensor are cut off by the cameras when creating a JPEG image, but they are saved into the raw image files; normally we still do not seem them because most raw converters just cut them off, too, probably because some of these extra pixels are often faulty. If one opens a raw image file from the camera used here (α7R IV) with RawTherapee, some of the extra pixels are retained and we get an image of 9,560 × 6,368 pixels. This means that all pixels in this photo (9,557 × 6,336 pixels) could indeed come straight from a simple single shot. Of course the Exif data state that the photo was developed with “Adobe Photoshop 25.9 (Windows)”, i.e. probably with Adobe Camera RAW (ACR), and ACR cuts the raw images from the α7R IV always to the nominal 9504 × 6336 pixels. But it is possible that the raw image was first developed with another raw converter (like RawTherapee) and only then edited with Photoshop … That’s the theory. Of course it seems more likely that the photographer made some kind of projection/perspective correction and streched the image slightly during that process; this would also explain the extra pixels and the image would still be authentic. – Aristeas (talk) 16:56, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The same applies also to other camera bodies, with a varying amount of extra pixels. Checking e.g. a CR2 file from the Canon EOS 5D IV, RawTherapee shows me 6732 × 4492 pixels – a little bit more than the official 6720 × 4480 pixels. So if one ever finds oneself in the situation that “just a few pixels” are missing at a border to complete the composition, it’s worth to give it a try and to open the raw image with RawTherapee … ;–) End of digression, sorry. – Aristeas (talk) 11:57, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Question The nomination indicates the name Scosse as uploader, but according to the file page, the uploader is Civvì. And because this last version is significantly different from the original one, with heavy processing, lifted shadows and oversaturated colors, I wonder if these modifications have been approved by the photographer. This message suggests that Scosse is not at the initiative of the FP nomination -- Basile Morin (talk) 14:13, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose per Basile Morin, and also wonder where the high resolution version of the image came from. If it was not uploaded by or with the consent of the original photographer then this is a copyright violation - if the photographer has chosen only to release the 6megapixel version then we don't have the right to upload a larger version that wasn't explicitly released under a Creative Commons license over the top Cmao20 (talk) 15:24, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi all, during the first candidature as QI the original version of the picture was considered too small so I asked the author if they were willing to upload a larger version of the picture, instead of uploading it they sent it me via email and I uploaded it. Maybe I should forward this email exchange to VRTS? --Civvì (talk) 15:38, 15 November 2024 (UTC) Update, I just forwarded the emails to VRTS. --Civvì (talk) 15:49, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support very well --Msb (talk) 21:27, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Thanks for the clarification about the image source. The lens flares and dust spot are still a problem in my view, but more importantly, which person did manage the post-treatment here, Scosse or Civvì? Scosse could have sent the same image in larger size as requested, and Civvì handled the processing before uploading it? In any case the correct name of the uploader should be updated on this nomination -- Basile Morin (talk) 22:37, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The author uploaded a new version with reduced flares. --Civvì (talk) 17:34, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Thanks for the notification and attempt to improve, but sorry to say the correction is not well handled in my opinion. First, the dust spot and lens flares are still there (I will add image notes to specify the exact locations), then the dark spot added to reduce the white spot in the center creates artificial shadows on the rocks. Moreover, in this last version, the contrasts have been reduced, or the clarity increased, compared to the original, it's really blueish in the background and at the top of the foreground -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:35, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
