Is there a category for images with different perspectives of an object? (solved)
The file File:Hooded dryer for infrared hair drying at hair salon - shown from three perspectives.jpg shows three views of a technical object. Is there a kind of meta category like "Images showing an object from different perspectives"? Pittigrilli (talk) 14:27, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- I have found it myself - by going into the root of the category tree from the main page, and soon found Category:Multiple images of subject. Hence, this thread can be archived. Pittigrilli (talk) 15:08, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

How to issue licenses for these images in this case?
I ask you not to delete these files yet, as I may need time to study the situation and seek help and advice. Thank you!

- @Vesan99: I see "© 2016-2022 Фонд Росконгресс" and "A reference to the rights holder – the Roscongress Foundation – is mandatory" but no statement that derivative works are allowed (which Commons requires) and in fact no explicit statement that there are no limits to reuse. licence
I am uncertain on the correct process to meet the requirement to “provide a link to the license” when utilizing an image/photo from Wikimedia Commons as the term “license” is used in two different paragraphs. Therefore, I would appreciate Wikimedia Common’s policy on which paragraph must be used. An example is the two paragraphs are below:
1."Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts. A copy of the license is included in the section entitled GNU Free Documentation License."
2."This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license."
I read the information on this topic on your help pages which did not allay my concerns over with method to use.
Thank you for your assistance.

- When two licences are mentioned on a file description page, it usually means you are free to use the work under either or both, according to your own choosing. You don't mention what images this is about, so I cannot see whether this is about the uncommon cases, where different parts of the work are under different licences. Anyway, I'd recommend your using the CC-BY-SA 3.0 (paragraph "2" in your post), as it nowadays is more widely used and better understood, and more liberal in how the licence need to be mentioned/quoted.
- As the copyright owner isn't the Wikimedia Commons community, but usually the author, our policy is irrelevant. What matters legally is the licence itself. For CC-BY-SA 3.0, the link in the form you posted is understood to be adequate. You also need to attribute the author. There may be a few other requirements, if the licensor has chosen to include them (such as by specifying a title for the work or an attribution line).

Misattributed image - not sure where to start cleanup
Back in February 2016, a user only active for three days uploaded the image File:Hisham_I_of_Cordoba.jpg to en.wikipedia, and then hours later created a cross-wiki entry in Commons for it under the same name. She claimed it as her own work, assigning it a creation date in December 2015. It has subsequently been added to biographies of Hisham on 17 local projects, and is associated with Hisham's WikiData profile. The problems are 2-fold. First, it is clearly not the uploader's own work, and second, it is not a portrait of Hisham I. Several websites attribute the image to artist Ilya Repin, entitled Portrait of a young man in a turban, and this artist's initials in Cyrilic (ИР) match those on the artwork, so this attribution seems sound. Repin died in 1930, so it is not a copyvio under life-plus-70, but it is misnamed, misattributed, and attached to someone completely irrelevant all over the Wikipediaverse. Is there any convenient way to clean up such a mess? Would it be an option to rename without redirect, leaving dead image flags to be cleaned up in the individual projects by those fluent in the respective languages? Agricolae (talk) 15:51, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

- Convenience link to Ilya Repin in Wikidata. Wouter (talk) 17:35, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Agricolae: I assume we have no evidence to suggest that Repin actually intended this to be a portrait of Hisham I. Given that, I think the first thing to do is to correct the file description page. Give it a correct description, authorship, etc. Remove it from Category:Hisham I, Emir of Cordoba. I think then it would be reasonable to unlink it from Hisham I of Córdoba (Q348593). That will probably unlink it from a bunch of Wikipedias as well, since quite a lot of them are pulling it in from Wikidata. Commons:File renaming doesn't allow for suppressing a redirect on a file that isn't recent, so I think you'd want to rename the file without updating links, and then nominate the redirect for deletion. Better to remove the links from Wikipedias first if possible, though. --bjh21 (talk) 18:34, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Given that the artist's subject matter consisted of contemporary Russians, Ukrainians, Finns, and Parisians, as well as historical topics from the same area (minus Paris) and the occasional biblical, there is no reason whatsoever to suspect that in this case he was tying to portray a (to him) relatively obscure medieval Iberian Caliph. It was probably a contemporary of his, following a headwear fashion fad. Thanks for the advice, it went easier than I anticipated, at least thusfar. Agricolae (talk) 00:31, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
File:Costa Rica Nicaragua Locator.png redirects to File:Costa Rica Guatemala Locator.png for some reason and I don't know how to fix it
I don't know why this redirect was performed in the first place, but it causes (for instance) en:Category:Costa_Rica–Nicaragua_relations to display a map of not Costa Rica and Nicaragua, but Costa Rica and Guatemala, which is obviously a less than ideal situation. I've already prepared an edit of File:Costa Rica Guatemala Locator.png that shows the right countries and which I intend to upload to replace File:Costa Rica Nicaragua Locator.png, but I don't know how to remove the redirect and open the filename for replacement. Would I request speedy deletion for File:Costa Rica Nicaragua Locator.png first, or if I just uploaded my file with that same name, would Commons overwrite it? Thanks, and sorry if this is already covered by a help page somewhere I haven't found! Skozik (talk) 18:16, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

Category:City of Winchester seems to be representing the district (as well as the city), which seems absurd. It is resulting in many article far from the Winchester Settlement separated by vast swathes of open country being categorized as City of Winchester which feels most misleading. My natural feeling would be to create and move most stuff to a Winchester District category and move most non-city stuff to that. However that's high impact and above my pay grade without discussion - not to mention I don't really have the time or focus for it. Crouch, Swale, might be one for you to comment on. Thankyou. Djm-leighpark (talk) 11:36, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Djm-leighpark: I think Winchester here follows our usual practice, where a district that has the status of a City is categorised as "City of X". The settlement itself is then categorised under the unadorned name, as Category:Winchester. For other examples see Category:City of Manchester vs Category:Manchester, Category:City of Lancaster vs Category:Lancaster, Lancashire, and Category:City of London vs Category:London. --bjh21 (talk) 13:41, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Bjh21: Thankyou for the explanation. I've quickly re-read en:City and as far as my simple mind can tell there is no justification for this, and I am fairly sure most people would feel the same. The cases of say Birmingham or Manchester where the district is essentially an urban conurbation is perhaps not unreasonable, but in the case of the en:Non-metropolitan districts this does not seem at all correct to me. Okay, I'm reading en:City status in the United Kingdom#Local government districts so this I getting some idea of where this came from. I have seen so far not example where Winchester City Council uses this terminology for the wider area, using either such terms as "Denmead, Winchester city Council" on a roadsign on google streetmap, and I've seen use of Winchester District on its website. This usage may not be wrong but it does not at all feel right. I'll leave it there, my head hurts. At least en:St Albans City and District seems to have a better approach. 16:15, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Djm-leighpark: There have been many discussions over the years about moving districts with city status over the years on Wikipedia and it has been mentioned here several times, see w:Talk:Leeds/Archives/2019/January#Lead for the most recent case. I would point out that while most non-metropolitan districts without unitary status and metropolitan districts (I don't think the OS used to use the "X District" alternative label for metropolitan districts) use "X" and "X District" as an alternative label by the OS districts, most unitary districts and Westminster use "City of". It may be better to have a wider discussion on Wikipedia where this will likely get more input. Crouch, Swale (talk) 08:30, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Crouch, Swale: , thanks for details. English Wikipedia is a suicide no-go area for me. I think it would be common expectation for most people would be city to refers to a metropolitan area; and it not being immediately obvious it refers to the district. I think I came across this as I was looking at Category:Newlands, Hampshire and observing it was in Category:City of Winchester immediately thought that was very odd, though I would expect it to be related to the district of Winchester due to my rough knowledge of the boundaries. While Category:City of Winchester has an infobox that describes this the page currently has no Template:en that might provide useful guidance. (I've added a Categorize as images relativing to the Winchester urban area are being added to that category which just added to the confusion. Thanks again for the explanations. Anyway there's little I can do about this so I'll essentially leave it and concentrate on the swales of the Platinum Jubiliee Country Park I took images of earlier UTC-today. Thanks again. - If you are just asking how to use an existing picture on Commons in Wikipedia, typically the wikitext syntax is just but there are other cases, especially in Infoboxes. If you ask a more specific question, someone can give a more concrete answer. - Jmabel ! talk 16:32, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

The information on this picture file (map) is not correct. The true author, as proved by his signature in the bottom part of the file, is Frans Hogenberg who did a later copy of this map, as correctly stated in the text of the article. in other words, the shown illustration, as well as most of the pictures related to it here, are later copies of the original, so they are not from 1570, but from later years — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2.138.14.212 (talk) 15:50, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

Wrong sorting in a category
For some reason, in the category SVG_ribbon_bars_by_country, Norway is listed under S. I recently created the category SVG_ribbon_bars_of_Norway without adding prefix=: in the code. Adding source code to generated graphs
I've generated a set of graphs containing electricity generation data for Australian states, eg File:Electricity generation VIC 2015-2021.svg. These were generated by a Python script to get data out of a government-supplied dataset (in XLSX format) and produce the barchart using matplotlib. I can't find a how-to to add the source code to the image pages in case somebody wants to recreate them (eg to modify the colours, or to update if an updated spreadsheet is released). Could somebody please point me in the right direction? --Robert Merkel (talk) 10:46, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:The Munsters One Sheet poster.jpg
Hi. I'm trying to figure out how to upload the new official one sheet poster for Rob Zombie's The Munsters to the movies wiki page. I've uploaded the file which was posted to his official Facebook, Instagram and Website on 6 July, but I think I've done this in error by uploading to wikimedia commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/EmmaJL5&ilshowall=1). Thanks in advance. EmmaJL5 (talk) 13:17, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- @EmmaJL5: Hi, and welcome. If you want to upload high resolution movie poster images here on Wikimedia Commons, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept movie poster images of others, and have the image designer(s), photographer(s), or producer(s) post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their official website or social media presence or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Low resolution movie posters on English Wikipedia (there called "film posters") were uploaded there for Fair Use subject to en:WP:F. We do not accept Fair Use files here on Wikimedia Commons. en:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard gives four options for uploading directly on that project: Upload a non-free file on top in the middle; Files for upload process; Plain form for local uploads; and Old guided form (the latter three in the right column under "Wikipedia"). — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:29, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

Two aircraft with the same register
Hi. I noticed that some aircraft have the same register number but they are completely different (For example see Category:1008 (aircraft) that includes a naval aircraft of Poland and a police aircraft of Iran, or Category:5-2501 (aircraft) which contains two distinct Iranian navy airplanes). Should we still put them in the same category? HeminKurdistan (talk) 14:52, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, the registration numbers are often reused with another model. A practical way how to deal with it is keeping the registration number as a parent category and then create subcategories with the different aircraft types and operators as disambiguation. Scans of Old Articles
My client wants me to include either links to articles that are scanned & reside on her website (that seems like a no no) So we though we could upload images of the articles. Yes of course the articles would be attributed but they aren't available online anywhere and are mostly from the mid 1990s. Examples of these images and PDFs can be viewed under "Reviews and Articles" at the bottom of this webpage: https://garicarter.com/healing-myself/ Frank T. Gomez (talk) 01:23, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Frank T. Gomez: I'm assuming you are dealing correctly with conflict of interest issues on English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki); at a glance it looks like you are at least aware of these.
- It is normal when writing about someone in en-wiki to link their website in the "external links" section. It is not normal to put "deep links" into their website there.
- If you are citing these articles, remember that articles don't have to be online at all to be citable. Still, you can provide "convenience links" to these copies as archived versions of the articles, if they are not available any longer from their more canonical sources at the respective newspapers, etc.
- We cannot host these on Commons unless the copyright-holder (typically the newspaper, sometimes authors or photographers or press agencies etc.) chooses to free-license them. In the (unlikely) event that they do choose to do so, at this point we'd probably need a confirmation of that license through the COM:VRT process. But most likely, unless there are copyrights that are held either by you client or by someone closely connected with your client, things like that just aren't going to happen, so Commons won't be involved in this at all. - Jmabel ! talk 02:14, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

Would an image of a park sign be a copyright violation?
There's a park sign in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, that I took a picture of this morning. Normally signs saying what's prohibited in a park are fairly typical, but I noticed that this one says that archery and model airplane flying are prohibited by city by-laws. Considering it's a fairly normal park with a children's playground, baseball-related stuff, and a running track, this seemed really out of place, especially because it's an official sign. So it's a sign that people might find interesting, like I did. I took a picture of it, but what I'm not sure is if it would be a copyright violation because y'know, text, and obviously I don't want to upload something that could have unclear copyright status. Thoughts? Clovermoss (talk) 11:01, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- I would also like to point out that I have uploaded an image of a neighbourhood sign in St. Catharines recently and if there are issues w/copyright status then that image may need to be removed. Clovermoss (talk) 11:09, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- Per Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Canada, there's no freedom of panorama for things like this in Canada, so that shortcut is unavailable here. That makes it a matter of whether it passes the threshold of originality. If it's a simple design and the text just plainly lists things that are forbidden, you're probably fine. El Grafo (talk) 11:29, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- Yeah, simple design with text listing things that are forbidden and citing a city bylaw. So it should be fine? Clovermoss (talk) 11:49, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- @El Grafo: So I decided to upload it. It can be found at File:Oakes Park rules sign.jpg. Do you think it's okay? Clovermoss (talk) 14:21, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

Does this file pass the threshold of originality?
There's a related thread above. Feel free to remove this as a duplicate thread if that's the norm here. I just wanted some reassurance that File:Oakes Park rules sign.jpg isn't a copyright violation. It's been on my mind a lot ever since I uploaded it and started thinking that maybe I was wrong about it being probably okay and since Canada doesn't have freedom of panorama...
Some kind of answer would really help with my peace of mind, though. I dislike making mistakes, but if it really is a copyright violation something should be done about that. Clovermoss (talk) 11:53, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Clovermoss. Individual words aren't really eligible for copyright protection per se, but extended textual matter does tend to be as explained in COM:CB#Noticeboards and signs. So, I'm not so sure I agree with what's been posted above. The way the items on the sign are arranged (even if only text) might be considered creative enough to be eligible for copyright protection. I know a vague response like this isn't probably going to put your mind at ease, but maybe someone else can get your a more definite response. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:34, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- Possible issues would be (1) the logo, (2) that there is enough text here that imaginably someone could argue it is approaching the point of copyrightable prose. FWIW, that's just a comment and I would tend to say neither is a problem. I would consider the logo de minimis (and suggest a Gaussian blur if someone thinks it is really an issue) and would say that rules like what is here are too simple to copyright: someone could put identical rules on a park sign elsewhere & could not be sued successfully for copyright infringement. - Jmabel ! talk 17:07, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Just to clarify, it's unlikely that this is enough text to count as copyrightable prose as what's explained in the link provided by Marchjuly? I will say that reading that my initial thoughts are stuff like paragraphs explaining stuff at historic sites like Morningstar Mill (can't take a photograph of that to upload here), but that it doesn't nessecarily apply in this case because someone could post identical rules elsewhere? Clovermoss (talk) 18:36, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- But again, part of what I think makes the sign so interesting is the atypicalness of it. The whole prohibiting flying model airplanes and archery thing. Maybe that's considered creative enough for copyright protection? Clovermoss (talk) 18:39, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- Again: I don't think this particular sign should be an issue, but "epigrammist" Ashleigh Brilliant has been successful several times sustaining copyright on even shorter texts. It's not necessarily about length, if there is enough originality. - Jmabel ! talk 04:23, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

Uploading images from HS2 Media Gallery
Hello, relatively new editor here. I'm currently working on upgrading the articles for infrastructure on High Speed 2. During my research, I found the official HS2 media gallery. Following an email to their press office, I discovered that so long as the copyright remains under HS2 Ltd, they are happy to allow for their use on Wikipedia. How should I progress with this? (ie will I need to make a formal request to HS2 Ltd. so they can directly send an application for an upload onto Commons themselves or can I upload them myself instead, making sure the copyright remains with them)
Help would be greatly appreciated! MajorScafellPike (talk) 12:58, 11 July 2022 (UTC)
- Just for context purposes, this is the exact wording of the emailed reply I got from HS2's press office.
- "Thanks for your email. Images published on our media gallery can be used elsewhere, with HS2 Ltd retaining the copyright.
- Therefore, we are happy for these to be used across Wikipedia articles." MajorScafellPike (talk) 13:01, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

- I've asked them to email the VRT guys about it - if a) their follow-up email is sent and b) it gets approved by VRT, will I have to be notified by either VRT or HS2 to upload it or will VRT upload it themselves?
- Follow-up - if VRT do upload it, how will I know that it has been uploaded so I can use it on the article?
- Apologies for all these questions btw! MajorScafellPike (talk) 20:32, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

Uploading media from an archive
I am trying to upload photos to the John L. Volk from the archive of Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach. I am currently employed there and have permission, however I don't know how to proceed with the copyright information. The photos were donated to us as part of the collection. Any help would be greatly appreciated! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_L._Volk Acapote311 (talk) 19:01, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Acapote311: There are two ways you can handle this (but do make sure you are certain as to who owns the copyrights, and that any permissions really do come from the copyright-holder!). You will need to select a particular free license. I recommend , which allows you to specify the attribution you want.
- On your own site, where you have these posted, you can indicate the free license you are offering, either for particular photos or for a collection. Then you or anyone can upload these to Commons, indicating the appropriate page on your site as the source.
- If for some reason you don't want to do that, the copyright-holder can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to confirm that they have granted the license. (If the foundation is the copyright holder, and if you are authorized to speak for the foundation, you can do the necessary release yourself.) Once this is sorted out, you will get a "ticket" that can be used to indicate that permissions are in order. The VRT process can either be done in advance of upload or you can upload, start the VRT process, and use

on each file page to tell others that the VRT process is in progress. - Jmabel ! talk 19:17, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Image not updating, purge not working, link somehow pointing to two different images?
I'm trying to update the 1924 house election image, but on the Wikipedia page, it still shows the old image. Purging the cache doesn't work, and the direct link to the image seems to point to two different images depending on how you access it BJenkins42 (talk) 06:23, 13 July 2022 (UTC)

Can I upload this?
I am making a new wikipedia page and would like to add the logo of the organization that I am making the page about. I have permission from the organization to use the logo for this purpose. Can I upload it? MrJRSmith (talk) 15:53, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
- @MrJRSmith: I assume you are talking about the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki). The answer would be different for some other languages.
- Commons can only accept logos (or anything else) that is either in the public domain or free-licensed. It sounds like this is neither of these, so Commons won't be involved.
- Instead, you can upload the logo directly to en-wiki, using en:Template:Non-free logo and en:Template:Non-free use rationale logo rather than Information. See en:File:KFC logo.svg for a good example. - Jmabel ! talk 17:22, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
Commercial use of public domain paintings image
Can I commercially use, reproduce, distribute, or modify images of public domain paintings in the Wikimedia Commons? Also, if I want to search for images of public domain paintings in Wikimedia Commons, how do I sort them? 118.238.231.228 02:37, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- If something is public domain, you can do pretty much anything with it. This is quite different from the images that are available under a license, where you have to conform to license terms.
- I don't understand your questions about sorting. - Jmabel ! talk 15:16, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- In some countries there are laws on defamation of famous artists, famous artworks etc., and there may be an obligation to attribute the authors. So "pretty much anything" is not the same as "absolutely anything" – but without knowing your jurisdiction and intended use, it is hard to give any more precise advice.
- There are probably millions of PD files on Commons, so you need to sort them in some way to find the relevant ones. I'd suggest doing it the other way round, find a way to find the files you are interested in and check which of those are PD. Commons:Petscan is one way to do it. The PD categories are hidden, so you might want to enable viewing hidden categories to see what the most common ones are.
- You probably want some specific kind of paintings. If you want paintings of old masters, you can probably just check that those you find are PD, if you want contemporary art, then finding the PD ones before manual evaluation becomes more crucial.

Uploading a photo
I have a photo of high quality taken at an outdoor concert 50 years ago that I want to upload to Felix Pappalardi's page. I took it myself with a large format camera but I just get messages that it must be my own work but it is! Any help would be much appreciated! Craiglove47 (talk) 18:55, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Craiglove47: I cannot find the messages. Anyway, as you used a large format camera and the image is high quality, we need to be more careful about copyright and cannot just assume it is your own work as you claim so (like we do for most snapshots). I don't know what you have tried, but it is best that you upload the image here on Commons (not while editing a Wikipedia article), send an e-mail according to Commons:VRT to confirm that you are the author and release the photo under the stated licence, and add the template PP to the file description page. The VRT team will tell you what evidence they need if your first e-mail wasn't enough (the correspondence is confidential). The backlog is significant, so the procedure may take some time, don't worry. –LPfi (talk) 19:29, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you. I have the original b/w negs here which I shot and scanned myself. I will follow your advice above! Craiglove47 (talk) 21:57, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- Just to clarify "here on Commons (not while editing a Wikipedia article)" means to use Special:UploadWizard (easiest if you haven't done a lot of this) or Special:Upload, rather than a cross-wiki upload from Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk
Scanned images from 1849 publicaton
Hello all,
I am working on the Joseph Warren Revere Wikipedia article and I have found multiple lithographs by Revere himself, within his 1849 book, A Tour of Duty. The art pieces themselves are, of course, in the public domain.
I am trying to ascertain whether the scan itself is public domain. It appears to be it via the New York Public Library. What do you think? Is this scan public domain, or do I need to scan these illustrations myself in order to submit them for Commons?
Thanks, Evedawn99 (talk) 19:46, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Evedawn99: Hello. These scans are in fact out of copyright. You can upload them here and use
PD-old-100-expired
as a licence. De728631 (talk) 19:49, 14 July 2022 (UTC)- Hi De728631, thank you for the prompt response and for verifying this. I am glad to hear they are out of copyright, and I am looking forward to uploading and appending the articles with these images. Thanks again for the help. Evedawn99 (talk) 01:54, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi I'm writing a wikipedia document about carbon removal with a scientist who has original drawings I want to use. How would I go about uploading them since they are not my drawings? Is there any documentation I would need from the scientist with permission to use them and if so what would I need?
Thanks! Mbrown2410 (talk) 20:36, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Mbrown2410: Hello. The best solution would be if the scientist uploaded the drawings themselves or provided them at their homepage with an appropriate free licence. Anyhow, we need evidence that he agreed to the use of his works under a free licence. So, if there is no way for the scientist to upload the drawings or provide them elsewhere with a free licence, please ask them to verify their permission as outlined in COM:VRT. Edited photograph format
Hello, I have a question about the format I should use to save and upload some images.
Commons:File_types#JPEG tells that «if the original file is in JPEG, it generally makes no sense to convert it to PNG: converting a lossy compression into a "lossless" format doesn't buy you anything since the "loss" already occurred in the original» - and that makes sense. However, Commons:File_types#PNG tells that «if you edit the JPEG, it’s not a bad idea to save a PNG copy before closing the program used to edit it; this provides a copy that someone else can edit without causing progressive degradation».
Now, I'd like to upload some photographs taken in JPEG. It's clear to me that I should keep them in JPEG format, so that they don't get their quality reduced. However some of them must be rotated. If I understand how lossy and lossless works, the rotated version will be degraded whichever format I choose, so it would be wise to use PNG, thus providing an image that won't be degraded in case of further edits. This seems logic to me, but I am quite confused because Commons:File_type#PNG suggests to «save a PNG copy» instead of something like just «save and upload in PNG format». Can someone provde advice about that? --CosyCobra (talk) 15:11, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
- If the rotation is a multiple of 90 degrees it can be lossless, even for a JPEG.
- If the rotation is not a multiple of 90 degrees it will by lossy regardless of format, but may be more lossy in JPEG.
- If you upload the JPEG original and then upload the rotated version as a new version, the original remains available to anyone who actually needs it. - Jmabel ! talk
- So I should upload the original not rotated file in JPEG, then:
- if the image is rotated by 90x degrees, upload a new version in JPEG (so that there is no quality loss);
- if the image is rotated of another value, upload a new version in a lossless format (there is an unavoidable quality loss, but the rotated version can be edited without further degradation).
- I got it right? And what about cropping? --CosyCobra (talk) 16:21, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
- If you do a lossless rotate, there is no need to upload anything but the rotated image. If you do lossy changes but already uploaded the original, derivatives can be made from it rather than from the rotated version, especially if you tell what you did ("rotated 1.5° clockwise"). If you do something more complicated, then saving as PNG before closing the image editing program may make sense.
- Cropping with the right tools is lossless (for the kept region) if you crop off from the upper or left parts by multiples of 16 pixels or from the right or bottom parts keeping a multiple of 16 pixels. Cropping from the left or the top by non-multiples requires recoding all of the image (adding loss), doing so from the right or bottom requires recoding just the rightmost or bottommost few pixels.
- (All this given that the image's coding agrees with the view, otherwise things may be reversed.)
- –LPfi (talk) 16:42, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
- In my opinion ("it's not a bad idea" is not policy), if you upload the original, there is no particular reason to save off PNG versions. I certainly do not save off a PNG of my own uploads that require post-processing: I upload the original, and I upload the modified version as a new version. - Jmabel ! talk 16:51, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
Thanks to both. I got it, and I also found jpegtran for lossless edits. --CosyCobra (talk) 08:04, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

- I'm afraid that Twitter cannot be taken as a reliable source on Wikipedia. And according to what I read in the article, it's a biblical term, no official connection of all terrorists to this name exists. Twitter is a social media, not an official newspaper media that may be taken as a reliable source. A social media is simply a tool where everyone can express their opinions and thoughts, not a media serving facts. Yes, news sites often cite different social media, including Twitter, especially when it comes to immediate events, and news sites often cite direct witnesses from social media. But Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a news site, Wikipedia cannot accept something like a social media post as a reliable source. Encyclopedia cites facts, not opinions. Invalid chunk offset error when uploading images
Hi. I keep getting an invalid chunk offset error when uploading images. Does anyone know what the cause of the error is or how I can stop it from happening? Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 22:57, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- I suppose the image format you're trying to upload is JPEG (a photograph)? The file might be corrupted. Check the file integrity with a JPEG checker, make sure that the file you're trying to upload isn't corrupted. Sometimes things like this can happen if the disk from camera gets damaged. MOD approval for a 1972 military image
I have requested the MOD to allow me to use an image of myself, when I was a WRNS officer, taken by the military photographic department of the Fleet Headquarters (where I was working) in April 1972. Their reply is quoted here. I am writing to ask if Commons will have any objections to this upload now?

- @Anne Ammundsen: (Edit conflict) Choose the "edit wikitext" tab, type "" and click "publish" (you can of course change the caption to whatever you like). Adding an image should be easy also with the visual editor, but I don't have much experience with it.
- There is one problem, though. Wikipedia in English doesn't allow fair use image for user pages, so if there isn't an article on you (or other suitable context), it is not accepted and will probably be deleted. It can be restored after New Year, and transferred here, no problems, and it is visible until deleted, but this isn't really keeping to procedures. There are some warnings on the page now, which could be fixed, but the main problem doesn't seem to have been solved.
- One solution is to have MOD e-mail the Volunteer Response Team, following the directions on the linked page, i.e. having them explicitly license the photo with a free licence. However, there is a backlog, and I don't know how happy they would be to go through the bureaucracy just to gain six months.

Uploading an image of someone's face taken from their own Twitch stream. Am I able to do this, or should I attempt to contact the streamer in question first?
I'm attempting to upload an image of Jeremy Elbertson (Jerma985) onto his Wikipedia page, however I am unsure if I am allowed to do this from an screenshot of a twitch stream. The stream in question was titled "The Gamer V Portable" streamed on September 28th 2018, and the image in question comes up around the start of the VOD. If anyone can answer my question on this, it would be appreciated. Translinuxcat (talk) 12:14, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Translinuxcat: Unless something is going on that I don't see, their Twitch stream is inherently copyrighted, and you need their permission. - Jmabel ! talk 17:52, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
- Unless his streams are labeled with a free license compatible with Commons (CC BY or CC BY-SA are most common), their stream is likely copyrighted and not even a cropped screenshot would be even allowed under Fair Use on Wikipedia, as no alterations are allowed. The concept can't be copyrighted. You can certainly use "park phase", "scrub phase", "grove phase", "breakup phase", but beyond that should try to word it as differently as possible.
- Also: when you have something that runs this heavily to text, you might consider whether you could just represent this as a 2x2 table with arrows, not even using the circle that was in their diagram. - Jmabel ! talk 19:41, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

2. Scrub phase | 1. Park phase | |
3. Grove phase | 4. Breakup phase |

- @Wikiquinde: Hola, y bienvenido.
- Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it as-is, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.

- @Anna Hrishko: Hello. You can only upload images from the internet if there is a free licence present at the source website, or if the image is clearly out of copyright for other reasons. This image cannot be uploaded though because it is copyrighted and does not have a free licence from the copyright holder. De728631 (talk) 15:59, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
Can I upload a photograph taken by a photographer who has given their permission for its use?
Hi there, I'm very new to this so please forgive anything glaringly obvious that I may ask! I'm creating a biography of a musician and I want to upload a photograph of the musician performing for the infobox. The photograph was taken by a photographer (I assume this means that they own the copyright by default?), but the photographer has given permission to use the photograph and is very relaxed about the matter. I'm a little confused about where the photo would fall in terms of 'free' and 'non-free' usage? It isn't a public domain image per se, but the photographer has given permission for its use. Is it okay to upload as long as I provide an attribution? Do I need some sort of proof of the permission before Wikipedia can publish the photograph? Many thanks in advance! JadeBlack90 (talk) 11:08, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- @JadeBlack90: Yes, the photographer owns the copyright by default. If they give permission for anyone to redistribute (whether verbatim or modified), modify, and commercially use their photograph, then yes, it can be uploaded here on Commons. If they require attribution (which is an okay restriction), then yes, provide it. Even if they don't require attribution, you should still attribute the author properly. I recommend to the photographer to use a license like CC-BY-SA-4.0 or CC-BY-4.0 so that reusers clearly know that it's free. pandakekok9 11:44, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your helpful response, it's very much appreciated! I'll make sure add the appropriate attribution and will recommend those licenses to the photographer. JadeBlack90 (talk) 13:52, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Pandakekok9 and JadeBlack90: pandakekok9's advice here is close to the mark, but not quite on the mark. We need evidence that the photographer granted the license. There are basically two ways to do this:
- They can publish it themself somewhere where their identity is clear (e.g. their own website; their Flickr account; etc.) and indicate the license.
- They can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT.
- JadeBlack90, sorry this isn't quite as simple as what you were just told. - Jmabel ! talk 15:20, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Jmabel Thank you for clearing this up, I have now started to put this into place and have contacted the photographer about publishing the license. I appreciate your help! JadeBlack90 (talk) 11:51, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

How to remove logo from Wiki Commons
I was trying to update a logo for a company to be higher resolution and accidentally uploaded their logo to wiki commons. How do I remove it? I don't want to infringe on their copyright. Also what is the best way to update their logo without infringing on their copyright? JTRamsey (talk) 06:02, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
- Okay, I have correctly uploaded the higher resolution logo correctly under fair use 'logo' designation and used that on the company article page. Is there a way to remove the original logo I uploaded from Wiki Commons? That upload still says there is no copyright license and it is free to use (which is inaccurate). JTRamsey (talk) 06:59, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
- Edit the file description (using the "Edit" link near the top of the page) and add

at the top, and click "Publish". Commons generally honours uploaders' requests for deletion of unused, recently uploaded files, and that template requests deletion under that criterion. --bjh21 (talk) 09:12, 17 July 2022 (UTC)

Category:Qub
Hello - So this category should actually be named Category:Qubo as it related to a television station (see simple:Qubo and d:Q7269661). The problem is the articles are connecting to the cat Qub when it should be Cat Qubo with the infobox and whatnot on that page. The current qub also has two category links in it relating to transportation which it should not have so those pages are incorrect. So I am proposing as it will not let me do it:
1. Add Wikidata Infobox to a new cat page named Category:Qubo and then when that is done, can you please ping me so I can make the updates through wd and simple please? Thank you. PotsdamLamb (talk) 23:41, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
- Convenience links: Category:Qub, Category:Qubo, Qubo (Q7269661). - Jmabel ! talk 02:18, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- Looks to me like Category:Qub is in the right place for it's (one) subcat, but needs parent categories of its own. Qubo is something else entirely, and so far has no category. @PotsdamLamb: are there images you want to place in Category:Qubo? Just create Category:Qubo with appropriate parent categories, and put the images in it. On Wikidata I'll remove Category:Qub from having any connection to Qubo (Q7269661) right now (that's just wrong) and when you've created the new category we can connect that appropriately on Wikidata. I'll try to sort out what Category:Qub is actually about. - Jmabel ! talk 02:25, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: That is correct. Qubo is a television channel (now defunct) but pages are linked to that wikidata which is fine. It’s the commons page that is not correct as the Qub has the Infobox and two subcats about transportation on it. The commons cat for Qubo would need just the Infobox moved to it once created. I do not know how to do that on commons which is why I posted it here. WD is fine and doesn’t need to be moved as it will unlink the 3 articles (I believe) that are attached but there is something telling Qubo to point to Qub in commons. Thanks PotsdamLamb (talk) 02:32, 18 July 2022 (UTC) PS Qub is a bus company somewhere in the world.
- @PotsdamLamb: No, Wikidata was not fine and has now been fixed. And if you plan to use Category:Qubo as a category, you'll need more than just the infobox. You'll need parent categories (at least categories about it being a television channel and the cat for any parent organization that may have an existing category). Then at Category:Qubo (Q8614540) you'll want to add Category:Qubo as the Commons category. - Jmabel ! talk 02:41, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Thanks. No there is media to go in it and there are parent cats I think it was owned by NBC or something. I’d have to look at the article again but it’s not a big deal. I just wanted to make sure the correct WD was pointed to it. Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated! PotsdamLamb (talk) 02:52, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

Creating a new Gallery
Hi, I am struggling with how to create a new gallery page of selected images from the large collection in the Category:Pancake Rocks. (Note: I understand the image formatting controls with the <gallery> control). The instructions for creating a new gallery page in Commons:Galleries say I can enter a name in the search box and then click on the red link (just like creating a new page in Wikipedia), but no red link is presented - only a heap of images. It is presumably easy to create a gallery page, but I am stuck. The instructions are either incomplete or wrong. Please help, thanks. Marshelec (talk) 00:29, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

And the image is low resolution JPEG as well. It could be just a mistake by the uploader, but it could also be a spam upload. I'm not going to visit the URL from a company computer as I lack necessary tools to do so properly and securely (I might be able to connect to the site throuh Tor Browser at home). There is also a Google Translate from an image, you could try that. Polda18 (discussion • contributions) 06:24, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

- @MIAJudges: In theory, you can start a request at Commons:Undeletion requests. In practice though: you keep uploading these without any clear sourcing and without any effective documentation of licensing. To take a typical example, currently nominated for deletion (though not yet deleted), File:Staci Yandle.jpg gives as a source "Senate judiciary comittee" (sic), but no URL or other indication of how you actually came by this file; it claims a cc-by-sa-4.0 license, which would appear to mean you agree that it is not in the public domain, but gives no indication who granted that license or where that grant of license might be documented. - Jmabel ! talk 22:01, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel
So I’m new at uploading pics. It was my understanding, from other judges that I saw with pictures such as Andre Mathis, that if I take a screenshot from their senate judiciary committee hearing then that was allowed. If that is correct, I listed I got it from their & the date. So are you saying I am missing the URL from the hearing for that day? If so, I would be more then happy to go in & enter them for each judge. I thought me indicating the place I got it from & date was sufficient enough but if not I can add the URL’s. Can you let me know if anything else is missing? You mentioned who granted me the license for the pics but if it’s from their hearing & it’s public record, so I still need permission from anybody? I appreciate any assistance you can offer.
MIAJudges (talk) 23:09, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- @MIAJudges: I still don't understand at all where you got these from. You presumably weren't present and photographing at the hearing, so you have it from somewhere, and I presume that is somewhere on line so, yes, the URL for that should be provided as source. If these are (for example) PD-USGov-Congress then use that in place of a license, but what you put is , which means the image is not public domain and the (in this case unspecified) copyright-holder has issued a cc-by-sa-4.0 license.
- So, to place to start this is by fixing this for images currently facing deletion; then (once a few have been sorted out) come back to the current deletion request, where you will indicate the changes you've made to fix things, and point to this discussion here on the Help desk. Assuming there is a basis to keep these images, then once they are sorted out in terms of the deletion not happening, then it would be time to go back and make undeletion requests so the now-deleted images can be restored and fixed. Does that make sense? - Jmabel ! talk 23:45, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel
Ok so I guess that was my mistake. I did not enter , I left it blank. So I guess that was automatically entered for me making it look like it’s not public domain.
They were all screenshots I took from their hearing (Just like the picture for Andre Mathis that another user put up last year) so I assume there is no issue with doing that, I just didn’t enter the URL. So tonight I will go in & edit each picture that has not been deleted yet with the URL from the SJC hearing for each in the format you put. Hopefully that will fix the issue that caused the deletion request. Thank you
MIAJudges (talk) 23:52, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- @MIAJudges: How are you viewing the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings so as to take screenshots of them? What channel, on what TV service, or what stream, on what service? — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 01:21, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G.
I just go in the website & go to the corresponding date their hearing took place & take a screenshot. I understand I was suppose to include the URL for each of them now. This was my first time loading pics on Wikipedia & I thought me indicating “Senate judiciary committee” then including the dates for each was enough. I’m now being informed that is not enough so I was going to go through each picture & enter the URL for each. But now another user is saying I can never take screenshots. I just want clarification because they all were screenshots so if that’s not allowed I don’t want to waste my time entering the URL for each. I have seen screenshots for other federal judges such as the Andre Mathis page so that’s why I am confused to hear screenshots can’t be used now. Can anybody clarify?

- I'm the admin on enwiki that expressed concern about the screenshotting. While I can conceive of a way that screenshotting might be done, it would need to be done by someone with a very in-depth understanding of image policy and appropriate attribution. In almost all cases, it would be better done with a clearly-verifiable link to a clearly-verifiablly licensed or released image, rather than a derivative work from a video stream. Acroterion (talk) 01:35, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
- & I'm still trying to understand: screenshotting what? If the stream was overtly public domain, this might be OK, but most streams, even streams of Senate hearings, are not PD. - Jmabel ! talk 01:43, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
- They appear to be taking uploads by Judicial Watcher (talk · contribs) as a precedent. While I'm not convinced that a screenshot from that video stream is properly attributed by linking to the stream's URL, at least JudicialWatcher made an effort. Acroterion (talk) 01:46, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
- @MIAJudges in the upload wizard you selected "this file is not my own work", then filled out the source and author fields. in author you entered "unknown". then you selected "The copyright holder published this work with the right Creative Commons licence" -> "Creative Commons attribution share-alike 4.0". This license requires to attribute the author. But you entered that the author is unknown. It does not make sense and therefore the files are deleted. C.Suthorn (talk) 02:15, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

@C.Suthorn
Yes I was informed by another user I did not enter the information correctly. It was my first time uploading pictures. I was willing to go into each picture & enter the correct information but another user told me it still might not be correct because I took screenshots & that is possibly not allowed as well. So I will not waste anytime & go in to enter the correct information unless it is confirmed me doing so will guarantee the picture will remain. It takes a lot of time & I don’t want to waste my time correcting each picture unless I’m informed the screenshots will be allowed to stay. So for now I will hold on from any further updates to the pictures.

Hello @Jeff G.
Yes it was taken by employees of the US Federal Government in the course of their duties. As for the time stamp, I can find it but where would that need to go, after the file name or in the description of what this is? As for how to write the file name, if I save it as File:Arianna Freeman.jpg then that would be the correct format?

- Ok great. So I will use the Arianna Freeman template going forward. It will take me through the end of the week to update all of the others because I have to go & find the time in each SJC hearing that the screenshot was taken & that takes a lot of time. - It might be worth mentioning this discussion on the deletion nominations, though. Acroterion (talk) 01:33, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- @MIAJudges: please don't re-upload images. If they've been deleted, wait until the current deletion request is favorably decided, the bring anything that was already deleted to Commons:Undeletion requests, citing the more recent decisions in favor of keeping.
- Also, please, when you refer to a file here (or in pretty much any discussion on Commons), use the form File:Staci Yandle.jpg, not just File:Staci Yandle.jpg. That way you get an inline link. - Jmabel ! talk 03:36, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- And now I see that at File:Arianna Freeman.jpg you did re-upload one that had been deleted, rather than fixing ones that are currently nominated for deletion. Please do no do this. It is absolutely not OK to re-upload like this after a deletion decision. I know you are well-intentioned but, again, this is what Commons:Undeletion requests is for. Someone who had not been so engaged in discussing this with you, and didn't know exactly what was going on, could readily block you for re-uploading after a deletion. - Jmabel ! talk 03:49, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Jmabel
- Hello,
- I already uploaded numerous photos with the updates that was written on this thread earlier today. I asked was there anything else I need to do before doing so & was told as long as the licensing was correct there shouldn't be an issue. Can't I just note this discussion on that talk page so anybody that was not in this conversation can reference it since I've already uploaded a couple dozen of them? Or do I need to go & delete them all again?
- MIAJudges (talk) 03:56, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- @MIAJudges: I think I've been pretty clear to you in my advice about how best to go about this. You are, of course, free to do something else, at the risk that things will not work out as well (e.g. further files may be deleted; an admin who has not been following all of this may see you re-uploading rather than going through undeletion & block you preemptively; etc.). - Jmabel ! talk 14:48, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- It looks like the deletion request has closed & the pictures were not deleted so I thin we are god now. I will go ahead & start the rest of the pictures over the rest of the week. Thank you all for your help. I'm sure everyone will enjoy the pages having the pictrues on them as much as I do so I appreciate your assistance with helping me get it right.

Scientific names
Question: Is there a policy in Wikimedia Commons for spelling scientific taxon names and synonyms? F. Riedelio • talk 10:06, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- What do you mean? Scientific taxon names and synonyms follow the grammar rules set by Latin language, you should read a Wikipedia article on a binomial nomenclature that uses taxonomy rules in Latin if you want to learn how taxon names are spelled. Polda18 (discussion • contributions) 11:37, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- In other words, do the guidelines in Wikipedia also apply to Wikimedia Commons? F. Riedelio • talk 06:25, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
- It's not a Wikipedia guideline, what I linked is a regular encyclopedia article that describes typical signs of binomial Latin nomenclature, where you can access the Latin grammar rules. It's just that, grammar. Of course words do not necessarily need to follow the Latin grammar, binomial names could be created from Greek words instead, and later "latinized" (eighter latinized without or with latinizing the grammar). But generally speaking, Taxons are spelled using Latin names. As for an official Wikimedia guideline that would apply, I know of none. Uploaders however typically use the scientific taxon names, because they're used internationally by scientists all around the world. Nobody says you can't use your national name for that species, it's just that people here mostly use the scientific name so the file is described using internationally recognisable term. images on Wikipedia
I am creating a page for a noted scientist. He followed the Wikipedia requirements for uploading images for free usage, and the images are now available in a Google Creative Commons site (https://www.google.com/search?q=%22Vincent+Giuliano%22+-site%3Awikipedia.org+-site%3Awikimedia.org&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwjIgKK15bL4AhUSCjQIHU8uAjUQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=%22Vincent+Giuliano%22+-site%3Awikipedia.org+-site%3Awikimedia.org&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQA1DFKVifMmCkRmgAcAB4AIABTIgBvgSSAQE4mAEAoAEBqgELZ3dzLXdpei1pbWfAAQE&sclient=img&ei=CpCrYsjTL5KU0PEPz9yIqAM&bih=1015&biw=1915&safe=off&hl=en&sfr=vfe&pli=1#imgrc=SctwY5Wk_09SQM&imgdii=oNOBm-u20b4aQM). The photos are older, and not precisely dated. Now, I am trying to bring the photos into Wikimedia for use on the subject's biography. I cannot reasonably answer some of the questions on the upload site, and also am given a message saying it could not be determined if the pictures were suitable. I am at loss for what to do next. - If you start from Commons:UploadWizard this may all work for you; if not: the URL you give shows images of a large number of different people. Could you provide URLs of the particular pictures you are talking about, if you need someone to walk you through this?
- As for "not precisely dated": upload first, with approximate dates, then edit as soon as possible to what you know about date range, e.g. between. - Jmabel ! talk 20:50, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you very much! I did realize that anyone responded until just now. Jeff G. also responded, and I hope to address his concerns, but firstly would LOVE to accept your offer to walk me through this process. It has been much more difficult than imagined to publish a simple biography, but I'm hoping persistence will overcome inexperience and a thick skull.
- Within the Google Creative Commons site referenced, there are several images of the subject. One appears to be "named" www.vincegiuliano.name, and the other giulianoart.com. Thing is, these are addresses for web pages controlled by the subject which include the pictures, but are not stand-alone sites dedicated to the pictures. Is that adequate? If so, I will retry with those addresses.
- These images were uploaded by the subject at my request, following Wikipedia instructions. I cannot be sure that he did everything right, but it appears that the images arrived a Google CC, not Wikipedia CC. Is that normal? If not what do you suppose we did wrong, and how exactly can we correct it? We walked through the instructions together (he is elderly, but even if not, Wikipedia is hard on newbies). I cannot be sure, but don't think he applied instructions outside those published by Wikipedia, so it is a puzzle as to how the pictures arrive at Google instead of Wikimedia.
- Finally, I cannot figure out why my 'Walticular' is highlighted as "page does not exist". Please explain what I have done wrong. Walticular (talk) 17:58, 11 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Walticular: answering just the easiest part of this for now, because I don't have time to plunge in. If you look at the wikitext for your signature, you will see Walticular, which means link to the page User:Walticular and show "Walticular". It is highlighted as "page does not exist" because you haven't yet put anything on the page User:Walticular. Nothing wrong with that, but if you ever do create yourself a user page, this will then link to that page. - Jmabel ! talk 19:36, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

- Thanks! It looks like birthdate and location need to have a strong reference source, right? Any suggestions on how to get such records? Secondly, is there no room for information that is noncontroversial or impossible to source? For example, Dr. Giuliano told me about the secondary school he attended, which was attended almost exclusively by people of Jewish ethnicity; and about his grandparents' political interactions in pre-war Italy. It seems like this kind of background info is relevant. How can such undocumentable items be included, being based only based upon an interview? Also, if possible, please comment on the above queries to Jmabel, concerning importation of images from Google Creative Commons. Walticular (talk) 06:17, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Walticular: What is "Google Creative Commons"? See also en:Template:Cite interview. Is this in reference to en:Draft:Vincent Edward Giuliano (Scientist)? — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 06:53, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, this in reference to the Vincent Giuliano site I am trying to create. I am a beginner, and find the process difficult. Several weeks ago, upon realizing that Vince had to load the pictures himself, I directed him to the page that explains how to upload pictures. We walked through it, and he seemed to grasp the content. Though well into his 90s, he is clever with computer stuff. He informed me that he'd successfully uploaded pictures. Searching, I found nothing within Wikipedia CC, but the pictures he told me he'd loaded were available on Google's equivalent site: https://www.google.com/search?q=%22Vincent+Giuliano%22+-site%3Awikipedia.org+-site%3Awikimedia.org&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwjIgKK15bL4AhUSCjQIHU8uAjUQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=%22Vincent+Giuliano%22+-site%3Awikipedia.org+-site%3Awikimedia.org&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQA1DFKVifMmCkRmgAcAB4AIABTIgBvgSSAQE4mAEAoAEBqgELZ3dzLXdpei1pbWfAAQE&sclient=img&ei=CpCrYsjTL5KU0PEPz9yIqAM&bih=1015&biw=1915&safe=off&hl=en&sfr=vfe&pli=1#imgrc=SctwY5Wk_09SQM&imgdii=oNOBm-u20b4aQM
- In several attempts, I could not get the pictures into Wikipedia CC, and am at a standstill. Thanks for your generous help! Walticular (talk) 16:27, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Walticular: As I wrote above, the URL you give shows images of a large number of different people. Could you provide URLs of the particular pictures you are talking about, preferably in a context where we can see information about the licenses that have been offered for them? And I, like Jeff, have no idea what you mean by "Google Creative Commons". I suspect you are using an incorrect term. - Jmabel ! talk 17:56, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- Your help is appreciated!
- The site (misidentified by me as Google CC) where the target fair-use images are is:
- "Vincent Giuliano" -site:wikipedia.org -site:wikimedia.org
- Vince followed the Wikipedia instructions for uploading images, and it appears that this is where his pictures landed. There are several pictures that are candidates for insertion into his bio, such as: "vincegiuliano.name" and "synergybioherbals.com" and "giulianoart.com".
- I do not know how to provide licenses that have been offered for them, but the images are on sites built by the subject, and he told me that he had successfully submitted the images per Wikipedia instructions. . Walticular (talk) 17:15, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
- I think you again are giving a search pattern, not links to any particular images. Sadly many web browsers by default hide the information about what page you are visiting (and many people are using Google queries instead of addresses), but that page address (URL) would help a lot. I cannot find "Vincent Giuliano" on Wikipedia in English, there are too many Vincents and Giulianos, and it seems there are no exact matches. Do you know what user name he used when uploading these images? –LPfi (talk) 17:43, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
- Again: a Google search result just says, in effect, "Google found these things on the Internet". Yes, anything you upload anywhere is likely to be found by Google. We have no way of knowing even which of the many images found by this search are the images in question, let alone clarifying their licensing. Nothing I see in that result gives any reason to think the images are either public domain or free-licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 19:20, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
- I deduce that Vincent must have made an error when attempting to load the images in Wikipedia, and will work with him yo get it right. Thx! Walticular (talk) 16:44, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

Journal Article figure
I have found a journal article where some of the figures could help expand the coverage of centipedes on Wikimedia Commons. The article is released under Creative Commons Liscence ("This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 4.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.") Navigating categories
Is there a way to see quickly the files under one category, avoiding to go through subcategories? the subcategories seem to proliferate beyond control. Example: if I want to see all images of Italy in the 1700 I need to go through subcategories by decades and under each decade subcategories by year (and others too). Often subcategories only list more subcategories and no files. To observe may be a few dozen files I need to go through >100 subcategories. This does not seem very intelligent. Am I missing another way? Tytire (talk) 16:13, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
My files may be deleted! Help!
Hello I have only just joined commons and have contributed half dozen items. Now, I have chosen to add material to human body, content which I know is always controversial at most times.. however the video excerpts were put into the correct categories, and text descriptions were added, which I believe are appropriate to subject. In fact the descriptions are brief well written descriptions, of medical terminology, which should give credibility. This should therefore fit well the remit on educational focus for commons. I know this topic is always a talking point in human society ( even these days!) But I wish it to be know I did not just put on ( as has been suddenly hinted at) "porn".. which it is NOT. I placed on edited, cropped transcripts of real life biological processes, on male body, in a way which I believe fits in with existing material on commons. I note also that the site has many sexual items on already, and when I was considering placing items on myself, I took into account these other items; but then decided that there was a space for my own editions too. My videos deal with natural sexual functions in a direct but well filmed manner; they are clear, edited, described, and partially cropped to protect the male models identity as well. I do have editing experience and media knowledge also; so I should know what I am doing. They are short educational mini films, not based in a studio with arc lamps, filters, nor glamour models.. instead a real body really seen as it is. I note many other sexual images on site; which I find much more offensive..I shall not name the page; for example a male dropping his trousers and relieving himself in a public park, by a lake ! Do you call that educational? Or what of the many other more dubious subjects currently on the pages? Some I would say are barely legal. And besides.. much more genuinely pornographic than anything I could have imagined. And yet my half dozen productions are deemed so awfully rude, they are apparently now PORN ! This I find grossly insulting; to be made out as the odd one out in the equation. In fact i find the comments discriminatory in the normal sense of the word. But what difference will it make if my few items are deleted? Because the rest of the genuine porn on commons will remain .. and if a certain immunity has built up for them alone; and the rest? Heaven knows !
Finaly I again restate my objections to be made out as having put PORN on this site. That is an objectionable thought, and I would ask that remark is immediately removed Please leave the few items on site; there is (by page views) a need for people to see and learn from them, as they already do on all the other categories too. I trust the (imagined) democratic process will leave ultimate decision on this matter in the hands of more than ONE administrator? But as with most democracies; I hold little hope ! Please reply to my concerns swiftly. Yours hopefully; Dissappointed User longlinbs109 Possibly soon to be exiting Commons? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Longlinbs109 (talk • contribs) 01:35, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
@Longlinbs109: as you were told on your talk page, "please make your arguments on Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Longlinbs109." Uploading higher resolution pictures in an article
I would like to upload higher resolution versions of the 6 pictures shown in the Gallery of the following article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Moss_Bennett The Upload Wizard is blocking this. Do I have to slightly change the titles to accomplish this? BFP1 (talk) 08:40, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
- If you want to upload a separate version as a new file, then yes, you have to alter the title slightly. If you want it to be accessible under the same title, replacing the lower resolution ones, upload a new revision of the same file (you can click a link down on the file description page to upload a new revision), not through an Upload Wizard. However, I would advice you to upload a new file instead. Polda18 (discussion • contributions) 10:47, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

Copyright question
On this en:WP article, there's a templated request for someone to add a relevant image. On this Bank of England page, a bit over half-way down, there's a relevant political cartoon, showing the "Old Lady of Threadneedle Street" chastising some bankers. The original cartoon, published in 1866, is out of copyright. But the Bank of England's scan may not be. What is Commons's position on this? Can I just grab the image from the Bank's site and upload it to Commons? If not, is there some other practicable way I (or one of you guys) can get hold of a legit copy? Maproom (talk) 21:15, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Maproom: With much argued over and rare exceptions, a simple scan does not create a new copyright. GMGtalk 21:19, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
- As I well know myself, a "simple scan" may not be so simple. I sell scans at maproom.org – and one of those scans may involve 30 minutes work, splicing, straightening, cleaning, trimming, adjusting the colour balance, etc. "Sweat of the brow" I think it's called, in UK law. But if you assure me that it's ok for me (a UK citizen) to skank that image from the Bank of England (a UK business), I'll go ahead. Maproom (talk) 21:39, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Maproom: See COM:SCAN. GMGtalk 21:45, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
- (edit-conflict) According to en:Sweat of the brow#United Kingdom, there is a small amount of uncertainty, but "in November 2015, the UK Intellectual Property Office stated that digital reproductions of public domain images are not protected by copyright". At [5], the January 2021 update to that Office's publication, agrees. DMacks (talk) 21:49, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

I have a photo from the archive. Photo is more then 100 years old. The archive gave me the right to use photo in public web sights with notification the archive within next two weeks of the place of publication. Which category of copyright should I apply? Tarantul13 (talk) 00:22, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Tarantul13: that's all rather confusing, but let's start with this: (1) when you say "the archive" you mean what archive? Most importantly, what country? (2) Is this a photo that is already on line somewhere? If so, can you provide the URL of the page where it is already posted and, if there is more than one photo on that page, enough information to be clear about what photo? - Jmabel ! talk 03:36, 24 July 2022 (UTC)

Duplication of data.
Hi,
If I correct the date in File information, then must also correct in Structured data. Is there a possibility to keep one copy of ancillary information so that corrections aren't always duplicated? Duplication allows errors and imposes additional work. Thx, ... PeterEasthope (talk) 18:51, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- The structured data is usually handled and updated by a bot based on the input to the Information template. But I agree that it would come in handy if certain fields were sort of hotlinked to the structured data. I don't know though if that is technically possible. De728631 (talk) 19:35, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- @De728631 as far as i know, it was a community decision that no SDC shall be inserted in a automated way, but everything should be entered manually with the consequence that two users (@SchlurcherBot @SchlurcherBotT and @BotMultichill and @BotMultichillT) do nearly all of the SDC work manually (one has to admire the amount of work they do!). C.Suthorn (talk) 07:03, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- I'd like to share my current understanding as well as what my bot is doing. One clarification first: I think what C.Suthorn is referring to was an initial request made by the community to import some SDC automatically to all files (through some kind of database background work). This automatic transfer was declined and instead the community was asked to transfer to the SDC functionality provided. So whereas this transfer through the bots mentioned is still automatic, it's not in the background and performed just as any other manual edit. My bot is currently only adding SDC, it's not configured to keep them in sync. For one, keeping them in sync is a more difficult task, as you would have to figure out, which one was updated/corrected, etc. Another is that the community has not yet decided if we can remove information from the file descriptions if they also exist in SDC. This would be my preferred route. However, doing this large scale was not fully discussed yet and I currently do not have the bandwidth to start this discussion. Now to my personal recommendation: what I am doing in the cases you highlighted is 1) correct the SDC information 2) remove the parameter from the file information. The information template will then automatically fall back and appropriately link to the SDC within the file information. No updates to the information template are needed, just remove the parameter with all it's content. If all information is in SDC already, you can even simply have an empty information template. I've performed these steps for all my uploads. See: [6]. --Schlurcher (talk) 07:43, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for the thorough information. I like the idea that the information template has a fallback option to draw data from the SDC, so there is in fact only one set of information that needs to be kept up to date. De728631 (talk) 12:03, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- Commons has about 85M files (images, pdf, video, audio, other). About half of these are by Fæ (6.68M), GeographBot (3.45M), DPLA_bot (2.95M), Askeuhd (3.5M), Panoramio_upload_bot (2.3M), Accounts of JudgeFloro (1.4M), Magnus Manske (1.2M), Mr.Nostalgic (1.18M), Ser_Amantio_di_Nicolao (1M), Tm (0.8M), Jeuwre (0.8M) and about 200 accounts with 30K to 700K uploads each. The other half is by 1.2M accounts with less than 30K uploads each. Most of them (1M) uploaded less than 10 files each. While the first group could possibly add SDC depicts to many of their uploads, nearly none has done so. The second group will not be able to add useful depicts to their uploads with the current tools (Upload Wizard, gamification tool, QuickStatements, AC/DC). Gpsleo is one user who actually adds depicts to all his uploads (and also to my uploads, if we attended the same event). I could add useful depicts to all my 32K uploads within 1-2 weeks, if there was a tutorial on the SDC-API, or example SDC-API scripts or the jwiki-framework supported high-level-methods to translate a category name into a Q-number and to add depicts to files without adding the same depict a second time. For the time being, i have decided to not do anything with SDC as it would be much to time-consuming to include the functionality into my workflow. --C.Suthorn (talk) 17:48, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

Uploading CC by 4.0 image

Webm files display as audio-only files.
On the following link: Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_by_Yug, the videos of the user Yug are displayed as audio-only files(click on the link for further information).
It can be either, a bug of the files, or a Commons' bug, if it is the second rationale, then it has to be reported(I don't know how). FanNihongo (talk) 05:17, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- ping @Yug. This happens, if the upload is incomplete (not all chunks of a chunked upload are uploaded, but the file is published nevertheless). Lingua Libre uses a MW extension for upload, but the same can happen with Upload Wizard or Rillke's script. You can test for it by comparing file length and/or message digest of local file and uploaded file. Offorader is an Upload tool, that tests for file length and message digest after assembling and before publishing of an uploaded file and can write a protocol, that can give developers a hint on what was going wrong. Titel of pictures
Hello,
I want to use creative commons pictures for a blog. The license says that you have to name the titel of a picture. Where do I find the title? I only find a description, which is often not usable due to length. Also I found out, that the title is not that relevant, when the source link is provided.
Can you please help me with this issue? Regiocommons (talk) 09:37, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Regiocommons: Hi again. The title of a picture here is the filename, or more generally the last portion of the URL where you found the license grant. Please don't duplicate questions or remove your signature. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 09:59, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

- @Estjl95: Yes, if an image is less than a week old, and not in use, we pretty much always will make a courtesy deletion when asked by the uploader. There are a few ways to tag it to get this to happen; see Template:My bad upload for more information. In this case, I'll consider your question here to be a request and I'll just delete it. - Jmabel ! talk 18:50, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
Uploading a screenshot of enwiki
Would I label it as my work because I took the screenshot or not my own work because it's technically text/image of an image that someone else wrote? Then add the URL and Creative Commons 3.0? For the authors, everyone whose ever contributed to the page/original image? The gist is that I'm trying to demonstrate a problem that happens when editing with the android app (where you are prompted to add an image caption to an image that already has an image caption). I tried to understand if the precedent for this could be found with other screenshots (File:Try to delete the main page.png) but I don't know if my situation is somehow different and I don't want to make a mistake in regards to that. Clovermoss (talk) 19:26, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- With respect to copyright a screenshot (or videocapture of scan) is not your work and not a work that meets the threshold of originality at all. It is however in most cases the work of the person who designed the screen content you took a screenshot of. --C.Suthorn (talk) 20:18, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- Okay, C.Suthorn. The screenshot I previously provided as an example is uploaded as its own work, which is the main reason I was confused. I'm assuming I'd select the latter option, then? Would I list authors as everyone whose ever contributed to the page and image I'm taking a screenshot of? Everything's released under a Creative Commons license I don't think there'd be issues as long as I'm attributing stuff correctly, right? Also, does it matter that I took the screenshot on my phone? Do I have to like credit whoever designed the android app for Wikipedia or something like that? Clovermoss (talk) 21:11, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- You can link the relevant "history" page as giving a list of attributions. - Jmabel ! talk 03:22, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: What about the app? Does that complicate things at all? What if I didn't want to just take a screenshot of just that article but say, a homepage specific to the android Wikipedia app itself? Clovermoss (talk) 21:33, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Clovermoss: Imaginably. I never use it. If there are free-licensed copyrightable visual elements, you'll probably need to acknowledge those. Do you think there is anything there (in the App UI) that is not free-licensed? - Jmabel ! talk 21:46, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Not a huge fan of the app, either. I've mostly been experimenting to understand what it's like and hopefully help others understand what the advantages/disadvantages of editing via this method are. But I can't really imagine anything the WMF putting out not being freely licensed. But the app UI doesn't really make things that clear... which seems to be a trend with what I've seen so far, honestly. Clovermoss (talk) 21:53, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

PDF Source permission for public record documents
I have multiple files that have been flagged with... "A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license." The files we are providing are for my Grandfather Joe R. Pool a deceased congressman. We are providing documents including letters written to him when he was in congress that we have in our family archives. The letters were authored by people working for the United States congressman therefore their work should be in the public domain. Therefore there should be no flag. - Is that picture released under a free license? Eighter in Public Domain or Creative Commons? See COM:LICENSE. If not, this photo cannot be uploaded to Commons, as we do not allow Fair Use material on Commons. You may upload the image to English Wikipedia as per their requirements in case that it isn't replacable by a free image. Which I doubt in case of photos of living persons, there's really no valid reason that a free image cannot exist. I would also suggest you to take a look at COM:AUSTRIA for more information about copyright in Austria. If the image is indeed a free image, it should be noted such with a proper license tag, and if there is a possibility of a doubt that it is indeed a free image, a COM:VRT ticket by copyright holder with a carbon copy to you should confirm the free license. Given that this is most probably an official work of government, COM:NOP Austria should apply, but don't take this as confirmation. Polda18 (discussion • contributions) 10:09, 27 July 2022 (UTC)

- @Jeff G.: Meh, you're not dense – but I may be. When I first clicked the original SVG, Firefox scaled it down to 30% which made it look quite crisp. Need to talk to an Indian Commons admin.
Is there any Indian Wikipedia Commons admin who can talk with me regarding Wikipedia copyright policies for government websites because non-Indians are misquoting copyright policies as well as website policies and is somewhat partial against me by applying rules against me which are not used against others who do the same thing. They don't even know when one policy overwrites another or not or else ambiguity arises. Need an admin who actually knows the copyright policy of government materials like portraits. I am also a person who works for a state govt publication department and is also well aware of the policies. See copyright (http://loksabhaph.nic.in/Copyright.aspx?linkid=1) says clearly For any other re-use of the material you are required to seek permission by sending a mail to us. Under Section 2 (k) of the Copyright Act (No. 14 1975), the copyright for the reproduction of any material from the debates and ancillary publications vests with the Lok Sabha Secretariat. which is never done. Thus, its a clear copyright violation.

If you're on mobile, you could press and hold tap long on the picture until a system context menu appears, and just select an option that will download and save the picture in your device. Trying to replace a logo with an updated version
I'm hitting an automatic firewall when I try to replace an old logo with a new file. I did actually create the logo file, and I'm trying to update the page on behalf of the actual organization, but Wikipedia won't let me add the file. Makes me curious about how the old one got there in the first place! If anyone can offer any insight into how to successfully navigate this upload/add image/copyright blockage it would be most welcome. Thanks! PBScanada (talk) 16:13, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: This sounds like some sort of abuse filter for new users. Since you're very active at the AF talk page, can you find any logs for this user? De728631 (talk) 17:36, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- @PBScanada: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg logo as a new user. The logo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to post COM:L compliant permission for such works on your website or social media presence or send permission via VRT. Also, any raster image will look jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 20:34, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

Usage in TV program
Hi! Sorry if an explanation has already been written. I'd like to use the photo of "File:112 Ocean Avenue (1973) 2.jpg - Wikimedia Commons" as is with no editing (well, there is a possibility to make it higher resolution or cut it a little), just for supplemental explanation of program content in our TV program. In that case, no charge to use, no need to contact author but need to put author's name "BrownieCharles99" as credit (we'd like to put it in the end-roll according to our rule) . Is my understanding correct? 101.110.33.49 08:18, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, and welcome. No, your understanding is not correct. File:112 Ocean Avenue (1973) 2.jpg is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. - Are you trying to tell that the licence, and perhaps the URL, has to be told too? Yes, that part is important, but doable without contacting the author. Or do you believe that all the programme needs to be put under the same licence? I think whether the programme becomes a derived work depends on how the image is used, and I am not sure that would apply in this case. –LPfi (talk) 13:15, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- @LPfi: Yes, in the absence of a more TV-friendly license, the Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license must be followed in it's entirety, including the "viral" ShareAlike clause. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:00, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- @LPfi: However, the sharealike clause does not apply to the TV program as a whole, just to any image that is derived from File:112 Ocean Avenue (1973) 2.jpg. You will need to indicate the specific license in the credits, give the required attribution, and supply at least a URL to the terms of the license. - Jmabel ! talk 14:40, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- That was my impression too (that we can treat the inclusion as "collection" and not "adaption"), but do we know? The attribution should be given in a "reasonable manner", for which the end-roll seems adequate. It seems the URI must be given, 50 characters for the deed, which is awkward but doable (odd that not linking the licence itself seems to be common practice, implicitly encouraged by the CC); a reliable shorthand would be nice. –LPfi (talk) 15:20, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for discussing and giving me your advices. Sorry if I misunderstood, but maybe I should put "BrownieCharles99" and the link of Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 at the end-roll, is that what you mean? 101.110.33.49 03:38, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- Pretty much, though I'd go with "Wikimedia Commons user BrownieCharles99". Side note (not relevant here): many users indicate explicitly how they'd want to be attributed but this one doesn't. - Jmabel ! talk 04:56, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

Update University Logo...
Hi, I'm the digital channels chief at Alberto Hurtado University, Chile. Wikipedia's copyright rules prevent me from updating the university logo on their page.
I need help to do it Manuel Rex (talk) 16:59, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Manuel Rex: Hello. Please provide a link to the new logo you would like to upload. Do you mean the text logo as in this graphic, or is there a new seal of sorts? For simple images like the UAH text logo, you can simply upload a file here at Commons and mark it with the PD-textlogo licence. Then you edit the Wikipedia articles and replace the old images with the new file name.
- For copyrightable graphics, please feel free to upload an image as well, but also be sure to verify your licence by email as described in COM:VRT. De728631 (talk) 17:33, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- In fact, we have 2 logos. the seal for formal applications "escudo-uah.svg" and a second logo for the university's global communications "logo-uah.png".
- The links are:
- https://www.uahurtado.cl/wp-content/themes/theme-uah-2022/assets-pi2020/img/logo-uah.png Manuel Rex (talk) 19:49, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Manuel Rex: The second one is not copyrightable, just PD-textlogo. The coat of arms/escudo is, though, and I would think it unlikely that the university would want to grant a free license for that, and I would actually guess that the license for the old logo at File:Uahurtado.jpg may not be legitimate. (but since you say "we" it sounds like you are connected to the university, so you might know better than I).
- Note that the English-language Wikipedia (but not the Spanish-language Wikipedia) has en:Template:Non-free use rationale logo as a way to handle non-free logos entirely internally to then English-language Wikipedia; this does not involve Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 05:05, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

help to enter CC license
I made a mistake when putting the creative commons license, I need help to solve it since the document is not mine and it affects whoever allowed me to upload it. The document in question is a PDF Life is a tongue-twisting. - @Normaminn: You blanked the page, called for deletion, and now you say you want to to license it differently. Which is it? Delete or fix the license? If the latter, you've made matters much more difficult by calling for deletion (and also, for that matter, by blanking the page). It would be fine to just change the license on a recently uploaded file, but now there is a deletion review under way.
- What should the license be? Who should authorship/copyright be attributed to? And given that you are not the copyright holder, is there somewhere on line that we can verify that the file is available under the license in question? If not, the copyright-holder will need to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT. - Jmabel ! talk 03:46, 30 July 2022 (UTC)

Wrong crosslink in exif metadata
I'm not sure where to report (or how to change it), but the link to the camera model Fujifilm X70 (for example, see File:Uppsala domkyrka 2 januari 2020 04.jpg) is wrong. Instead of linking to en:Fujifilm X70 it links to en:X70. Where do I report or change it? EdTre (talk) 08:40, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- @EdTre: Hi, and welcome. Sorry, but that is not possible here, as the metadata directly from the camera reports that "Camera model" is "X70". en:X70 is already a disambiguation page, in which visitors like yourself have been distinguishing between different X70 models (of both autos and electronics) for over a year. Even if we were to prepend manufacturer "FUJIFILM" to the model for enwiki lookup purposes, you would find that en:FUJIFILM X70 does not exist. Perhaps some AI can compensate for that in the future, but for the present you will just have to make the connection yourself. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 11:28, 30 July 2022 (UTC)

Uploading photo of a singer that I did not take
Hi guys, I want to use Wikimedia Commons to upload a photo of a singer, that I'd like to use on the Wikipedia page of said singer. This photo was not taken by me, but by a professional photographer, who owns the copyright. The photographer gave me permission to use the photo and upload it, as he doesn't use Wikipedia. Now, I know that the photographer has to send to Wikimedia a declaration of consent to use his copyright-protected media with an email that follows this template https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Email_templates. He is willing to do so. So the procedure would be: I upload the photo, I give the photographer the URL of the photo, he inserts it in the required space for it in the e-mail and sends the email to commons@wikimedia.org. I insert the code that I can find here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:PP on the photo's page, then Wikimedia reviews the photo and accepts it as "permission confirmed". Is this procedure correct? Am I missing something? Ravenlions (talk) 17:11, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Ravenlions: as far as I can tell, you have that right. In my experience, the trickiest part is usually to get the photographer to select a license that conforms with what we need: allowing commercial use & derivative works. - Jmabel ! talk 18:06, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Hi, thanks for your reply! Yes, I explained to the photographer that he has to declare at least a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license and he agreed, as attribution would still be there, so that wasn't a problem for him. As long as the procedure I described is correct, then, we shouldn't have a problem. Is it possible to insert the photo in the Wikipedia page before permission is confirmed or is it better to wait? Thanks again --Ravenlions (talk) 18:17, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Ravenlions: If you are pretty sure the permission will be granted, go ahead & use the photo in the article. - Jmabel ! talk 19:42, 30 July 2022 (UTC)

Doubts about the license of an image
Hello. How do I know if this logo meets the originality threshold? Can I upload since it's just a simple title even without proof? I asked an admin, but I think it's best to ask here as they seem to be busy. It's better to ask than to take a risk. Pixial (talk) 21:08, 30 July 2022 (UTC)

:File:Example.png
(notice the colon at the start of the link, it will prevent the file from displaying on page and instead just shows the link like this: File:Example.png). Polda18 (discussion • contributions) 06:23, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
- File:Tenghuang art.jpeg. The edit is one of few contributions on Commons by the asker. The problem was that Unknown is a template (automatically translating the phrase to the language of individual users) while "Yifan Li" is a name, so also the curly braces had to be removed. Fixed. But please add more information on the author if possible, such as a link to a Wikipedia article on them or to their web site, as otherwise we won't know what Yifan Li this is about (when the source link goes dead) or cannot verify anything. There are 2,130 hits on that name at Wikidata (some probably duplicates, but anyway). Did you find the name in some written source you could cite? –LPfi (talk) 10:32, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
- Ok. I've tried searching on English Wikipedia, but I can't see any page that would point to that artist. Seems like that artist is fairly unknown. Also, the source link is already dead. I found an archived version at Wayback Machine, but it is just the picture, no information. When I try to access archived homepage, I get greeted with an error response in JSON saying that the requested path cannot be empty. Seems like an anonymous image sharing hosting that went offline. The last known date of the website working is January 11 2022, when it appeared to be whitelisted only site.

Need help with licensing of images photographed from public information boards
Yesterday I've provided a couple of images that I photographed from public information boards that were around the publicly accessible site (here for example). Those photographs are historic photographs not stating the author or a date (contextually it could be anything between ca. 1900 and 1980 for the colored images...but just an educated guess). The location of those info boards is in the Faroe Islands, and I'm aware of this country specific Help Page that doesn't help me, since I don't know author nor date. Apparently my listed freedom of panorama isn't enough, since there isn't any specific information on the Faroe Islands regarding FOP. Any help on how to preserve those historic documents? Thanks! --HylgeriaK (talk) 10:02, 31 July 2022 (UTC)
- No information on FOP = no FOP. However many images are quite old and can be in public domain (50 years after creation according to Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Faroe Islands). Ruslik (talk) 20:29, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

Vandalism/bug I'm not sure how to fix.
Greetings,
I'm fairly new to Commons, so sorry if the solution to this problem was right in front of me or something.
I've found what appears to be either vandalism or a bug on the file page linked below, but that particular detail doesn't show up in the "edit" tab: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%22_OnlineMidi.com%22_9.mid
Any help regarding how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Toast for Teddy (talk) 20:13, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

Deletion of files
Few days ago some of the files uploaded by me were nominated for deletion by User:Run n Fly. He stated a reason For any other re-use of the material you are required to seek permission by sending a mail to us. Under Section 2 (k) of the Copyright Act (No. 14 1975), the copyright for the reproduction of any material from the debates and ancillary publications vests with the Lok Sabha Secretariat. which is never done. I want to ask why only my files were deleted? There are thousands of other files from the same portal which are even today untouched. According to the same logic by which my files were deleted, other files like File:Bhagwant Mann Lok Sabha.jpg should also be deleted. I want justice. My files should be restore. If you want other uploads deleted, you should state, that and why these do not meet the GODL license. --C.Suthorn (talk) 23:06, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

- @EpicMagicBoi6: Can you please link a page where we can see the logo in question, and indicate what country it would be from (because that is the relevant jurisdiction)? - Jmabel ! talk 03:43, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.supercell.clashmini&hl=en_US&gl=US Here is where you can find the logo
- I believe it is from Helenski, Finland, as Supercell's headquarters are located there EpicMagicBoi6 (talk) 20:40, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
- @EpicMagicBoi6: If their "icon" is the thing with the crossed swords at the end of the video, then that is certainly copyrighted, and I'd be astounded if there is a free license available. So we can't have it on Commons. The policies for local use on the various language-specific Wikipedias vary. You probably can use it on the English-language Wikipedia (with some provisos). I recommend you read en:Wikipedia:Logo Copyright/Trademark, and feel free to come back here if you still have questions. - Jmabel ! talk 21:58, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
- It is the barbarian king, the yellow haired character with a crown and sword EpicMagicBoi6 (talk) 22:24, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
- @EpicMagicBoi6: Same comment applies. It was already over the threshold of originality. - Jmabel ! talk 23:43, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
- Alright, I'll work on the draft without the image, lmk if I can use the image (barbarian king) EpicMagicBoi6 (talk) 18:21, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
- @EpicMagicBoi6: Again: the image cannot go on Commons, but can be uploaded to the English-language Wikipedia for use only there. I recommend you read en:Wikipedia:Logo Copyright/Trademark, and feel free to come back here if you still have questions. - Jmabel ! talk 19:42, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

Admin accused me of blugeoning!
To whoever it may concern I am currently in dispute over my few entries on Commons being probably deleted! I have provided a explanation of my reasons for NOT wanting them got rid of; which I initially was told was in wrong section.. so I moved it; took ages typing, only now to be told by admin that I had put too much in, in the wrong place that it was considered "bludgeoning".. It was suggested by admin that I had repeated text already typed before, because I simply did not like the original answer! This is untrue, and a false statement, deflamatry remark, I find insulting to my intelligence! I put text twice because I was lead to believe that it maybe would not be seen at all! ( Maybe they hoped?)
The accusation of "bludgeoning" under your rules is advised to be avoided as accusation of user! I am certain that at some point I will be off site eventually due to mildly bullying methods of certain individuals, excersizing power over others ( an old story).. but I will NOT be bullied, and you may consider now this a complaint. I do not like people making false judgements on my character or on my behalf; I myself try to be fare to others, where at all possible, but not everyone is that way these days, are they? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Longlinbs109 (talk • contribs) 23:00, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- This is a page for requesting help in using Commons. I have no idea from what you wrote what particular help you are asking for, so there is nothing at all I can do for you. - Jmabel ! talk 03:25, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

- I am in no way going to look at these files eighter home, at my workplace or anywhere else to verify the reasons. I don't say that it shouldn't be there for being an explicit content, neighter I say that claims about bad quality are actually valid, I don't know and I don't want to know. Stuff like this does actually sometimes have an educational value, if the subject is properly described and pictured (proper lighting, proper focus). If that is this case, I don't know. But I do think that people discussing about the removal have valid points to support the removal, as I don't think that they would do such just for the lols or just to insult the uploader. That's after all the point of such open discussion, to eliminate such possibility as much as possible. Polda18 (discussion • contributions) 12:55, 26 July 2022 (UTC)

Please remove unsuccessful upload, replaced
Please remove File:Pestdokter_(Geel).jpg since upload failed, and replaced by File:Een_Pestmeester_in_Geel.jpg. Bert76 (talk) 15:48, 27 July 2022 (UTC)

- What is wrong with the first one? And why delete the larger file, not the smaller one? --C.Suthorn (talk) 16:58, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
- I don't think that matters that much, because it's still relatively similar size. Wikipedia article will only display thumbnail after all, so a little bit smaller size doesn't really matter. Polda18 (discussion • contributions) 06:38, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- 500K vs 1500K is 3 times the size?! @Bert76: --C.Suthorn (talk) 15:05, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- I thought you were talking about dimensions, not the data size of the image. Speaking dimension-wise, the two images were in fact relatively same size. There's no way for me to compare the data size now, as the first one has been deleted. I didn't check the data size. Polda18 (discussion • contributions) 06:31, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- If I remember correct the dimensions were identical, also the image content. Either the quality was reduced or some extra data in the file. --C.Suthorn (talk) 07:59, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- The deleted image was slightly larger speaking of dimensions, but the dimensions were relatively same. Slight dimensions reduction alone shouldn't reduce the file size that much, eighter the quality was lowered or some extra data were removed, or both. Copyright help regarding File:Highway snow plow truck.jpg
I'm not sure if this image is free domain to use. I don't know who's the original creator of it since it's looks like it was somewhat archived. If someone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks.--IDontScript (talk) 14:16, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- @IDontScript: Hi, and welcome. The associated website claims to be "© Queen’s Printer for Ontario, 2012–22", so I'm guessing it is non-free. Please have Queen’s Printer for Ontario send permission via VRT unless OGL-ON applies. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:21, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- Alright, thanks, so how will I be able to send it in to the Queen’s Printer for Ontario to get permission to use the image? I already know their email address, and is there an email template where I can be sure to send it to them to get permission without causing any confusion? Sorry I'm new to doing this lol IDontScript (talk) 15:46, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- That is, of course, if they turn out to be willing to grant a license that conforms with what we need (see COM:L). - Jmabel ! talk 18:04, 30 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hey, so it's been a few days almost a week since I contacted their email address and I've gotten no response at all. Idk if I'm doing something wrong or what, but I don't know if it's possible for you guys to help email them since I'm currently stuck on whether wikicommons should still keep the uploaded photo file or not since I haven't got a valid response yet still.
