My understanding is that Public Square isn't a city on its own so I rewrote it all as a portion of Watertown which is the city. Naming convention for years is Category:2005 in Public Square (Watertown, New York) not Category:Public Square (Watertown, New York) in 2005. Mind if I move and rename them all? I want to know if we can avoid a CFD discussion for something fairly straightforward. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 20:15, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- I am aware of this, and accidentally named Watertown, New York categories as Watertown, New York in ... instead of ... in Watertown, New York and renamed these categories accordingly (which would have been a pain in the ass had I not literally just before found out about HotCat), but I figured that cities are ... in city, and locations are location in .... I'm fine with you renaming these, though. Oopsy daisy if that was some kind of MOS violation. Could you fix up Template:PublicSquareWatertownNewYorkYear as well, then? Because it links itself as a category and creates a loop, and you can't navigate through the public square year articles using it. Thanks for mentioning it instead of doing a CFD discussion, cheers Lallint⟫⟫⟫Talk 20:20, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- Oh, I see you already fixed it up. You work fast! Lallint⟫⟫⟫Talk 20:20, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Likely copyvio, only categories are "A"
[edit]I see you have tagged several images for speedy deletion with the rationale Likely copyvio, only categories are "A". There are two issues with this: 1) bad categorization has nothing to do with whether an image is a copyvio, and is not a valid reason for deletion; 2) even if you have reasonable grounds for suspicion, COM:CSD#F1 requires evidence of a clear copyright violation. As for the individual images, I have dealt with them in different ways. Some of them are out-of-scope personal photos of non-notable users with no significant Wikimedia contributions, so I have deleted them under COM:CSD#F10. Some of them look potentially suspect (e.g. professional portrait or a photo uploaded by the subject that does not appear to be a selfie), but there's no hard evidence of copyvio so I've tagged them {{No permission since}}. Finally, there are a few I saw no problem with so I removed your tag altogether. Feel free to open a DR on any of them, as long as you present a valid reason for deletion this time. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 02:51, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
New York Civil War regiments
[edit]Hi @Lallint: I've noticed that you moved the Category:35th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment to Category:35th New York Infantry Regiment, which is alright with. The only thing what it is, all other 185-something categories in the Category:New York Civil War regiments include the designation "volunteer." So it looks like a good weekend project for you, and please don't forget to move the images as well. Or you can simply restore the status quo. Cheers, --Taterian (talk) 00:54, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

Best practices for speedy tagging
[edit]Please don't tag LicenseReviewed images for speedy deletion, as with File:Breathe by Rockbitch (circa 2000).webm or File:Music video created for the Discord Hackweek 2019 official contest.webm. COM:CSD#F1 says: "Clear copyright violation. Content is a clear copyright violation, with evidence that no Commons-compatible licensing has been issued by the copyright holder." If a LicenseReviewer has confirmed the validity of the license, then it means that some experienced user has considered the copyright status of the work and does not believe that it is a clear copyvio. If you disagree with their assessment, you should open a COM:DR instead of tagging it for speedy. Additionally, if the source appears to be from some official-looking account (e.g. having lots of followers/subscribers, being linked to from an official website/social media, etc.), then there is enough evidence of a free license that you cannot say it is a clear copyvio, and you must go through COM:DR if you have doubts about the copyright status. The only time a LicenseReviewed file can be speedied is if the given source is obviously from an impersonation/fake/laundering account and you have proof of the laundering in the form of an earlier copy of the file credited to a different author. For a big media property / official account, you don't know what kind of backroom deals took place to allow them to release a video under a free license, so it is best to send it to DR so everyone can discuss whether we should trust that they have secured all necessary rights or if we need to demand proof via COM:VRT.
Additionally, if an admin or other experienced user removes your speedy tag, do not restore it; it is considered forum-shopping (i.e. repeatedly asking different admins until you get one to agree with you). Instead, the rejection is prima facie evidence that your rationale for deletion is controversial (i.e. not a clear copyvio), and if you wish to continue to pursue the deletion you must open a COM:DR. Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Dog dressed like Justin Bieber (8106807321).jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Dog dressed like Justin Bieber (8106807321).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
