Legend of the Media of the day 2014-05-30 wrong
Sorry I cannont change it myself, though I am the author of the video. The difference between first and last frame is about 15 minutes, the difference between the frames is not constant, varying from about half a minute to several minutes. --Siga (talk) 06:36, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Spelling error in POTD June 2?
Is there a spelling error in the Picture of the Day caption? glas -> glass? 25or6to4 (talk) 19:11, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Done, changed "glas" to "glass". --rimshottalk 19:34, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
Rotate PotY high rankers?
Not to detract from Steffan's achievement in the light-bulb pic, I wonder whether we could have some rotation of the most highly ranked images? One year—was it 2012?—the astronomical telescope winner stayed on the main page for soooooo long ... months, was it, till I made comments here. From the readers' point of view, a more dynamic rather than static approach would be appreciated, I'm sure. Tony (talk) 06:26, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed. What image (or process) do you recommend @Tony1: ? -Pete F (talk) 00:54, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
- That would be nice. Cycle them all through. All were worthy pics. Be nice to see a different one every time the page refreshes. Saffron Blaze (talk) 01:45, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
- Indeed; possibly with a little time-favouring of the winner and other highly ranked images. Tony (talk) 07:29, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

- @Beria and Rillke: So could you please re insert that blurb with some code enhancement to randomly (or a timely switching or any other logic you prefer) to showcase all top 12 images one by one on the main page? Jee 02:31, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
- Created a template that can be transcluded once WLE is over:
|Announcement Text=
- Information is fetched from Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Results/R2/gallery using LUA parsing. Since the main page is purged once per day, the POTY image will also change. -- Rillke(q?) 10:06, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
- I can set up my bot to purge the page very 6 (?) hours, if needed^^ --Steinsplitter (talk) 20:03, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, Rillke. Jee 10:11, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
- Currently it's using a random order; let me know if you think it should rotate +one per day. And, for the future, please share your thoughts about a possible implementation. -- Rillke(q?) 10:13, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
- My understanding from your comment above is that it will change everyday in random order. I think it is enough. Jee 10:21, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
- I checked it by purging the cache, and it works as supposed to be. Thanks, Jee 10:26, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Buttons
Moved from User talk:Steinsplitter. —Mono (how to reply) 02:08, 19 June 2014 (UTC) Hi, let's talk about the buttons on the main page.
The change I made did a couple of things:
- Fixed this layout problem
- Added an intuitive contact us button. (Buttons are much better than links for demonstrating to new users that an action can be taken.)
- Retained the upload button for logged in users
I was working on a way to only show the upload button to logged in users, meaning there would be 3 buttons at most visible at any time.
Does that sound like an acceptable solution to you?
Thanks, —Mono (how to reply) 19:56, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, There is a contact us link in the sidebar, i don't see the need to flood otrs with too much mail and i don't see the need to have two upload buttons on the mainpage. --Steinsplitter (talk) 20:01, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- There are 22 links in the sidebar and they all look the same, not counting language links. We could definitely replace the upload button with a contact us button. However, it makes sense to me to have a upload button in the 'Participating' section because that is the most obvious way to participate in Commons. —Mono (how to reply) 20:04, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- One upload button on the Main Page is imho enough (users are not blind) and no need for a contact us button, why a such button? --Steinsplitter (talk) 20:06, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- There is a need, it's very difficult to find that page among the 22 links in the sidebar. Plus, buttons are much better than links for demonstrating to new users that an action can be taken. —Mono (how to reply) 18:48, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Link to Category:Media needing categories
Why not add a link to Category:Media needing categories with a short explanation to the Participating section? It's one major way of participating, and more categorizers are always needed. --Jonund (talk) 17:30, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

These three links at the top right need more space between them, as they are currently showing up (to me, on FF 17.0.9 for Linux) as all "one word". Suggest inserting either non-breaking spaces or vertical bar characters to separate them. - dcljr (talk) 23:29, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- @User:Dcljr I've increased the padding between these elements. Can you see if that works for you now? --99of9 (talk) 00:30, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

Reception
Odd results Bing vs Google
I had occasion to throw "wikimedia commons" into Bing and was suprised at the top result. It was for this site but one of the sub categories offered was an eyebrow raiser. Curious I tried the search with Google and got the same top result and most of the same sub categories. There was one major difference. Why does Bing identify "Penis" as a major sub category for Wikimedia Commons? Saffron Blaze (talk) 14:31, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Saffron Blaze: That's odd. Maybe we should no index that category? —Mono (how to reply) 00:19, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Mono: But it needs a community wide discussion. Pinging Trijnstel for opinion. Jee 03:19, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
- Do we understand why it is happening? If not, no-indexing the category would be premature ejaculation. It could simply be Microsoft thinks Commons is a bunch of dicks? Saffron Blaze (talk) 04:17, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
- It's most likely due to being linked to from several outside sites. Personally, I would favor noindexing it as such search results make Commons far more likely to get censored by outside agencies (or prudish parents). See Lmzimm's comment at Category talk:Nude women for example. Kaldari (talk) 18:40, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Saffron Blaze: Thoughts? Kaldari (talk) 17:24, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

@Kaldari: I tried turning on SafeSearch on Google, and submitting the query "nude women" site:wikimedia.org. This category did not show up (though it did, of course, prior to turning on SafeSearch). There was a small message that said: "The word "nude" has been filtered from the search because Google SafeSearch is active."
So, I'm not sure if no-indexing this particular category offers any advantage over what people can achieve already with Google. (I'd guess that Bing works much the same way.) -Pete F (talk) 19:38, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Peteforsyth: The issue isn't with searching for "nude women", but with searching for "wikimedia commons". If the first results returned by Google or Bing for "wikimedia commons" involve nude women, that's likely to raise some eyebrows and play into the hands of those who would prefer to block Wikimedia Commons entirely (schools, China, parents, etc.). (Not to mention just giving people the wrong impression of the site.) Kaldari (talk) 06:24, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, I understand that. I guess I don't feel confident enough in my understanding of what would motivate an entity to ban access to Commons, to have much of an opinion on this proposal. There are of course a lot of reasons somebody might search on this term, plenty of them legitimate -- so enabling "noindex" does seem like a pretty extreme step to me. I don't know the best path forward. Carry on... -Pete F (talk) 17:55, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Pictures of the Year
I am finding "Pictures of the Year" on the main page now a bit repetitious, it was great to see immediately after the vote, but I see no point in it still being here now. Picture of the day is to highlight our contents (POTD are all FPs, no sense in having another FP either), and it is detracted from by having another image next to it. Commons app
I propose to stop advertising the Commons app on our main page. It's broken, the Foundation doesn't have the time to support it, volunteers are not stepping up for maintaining it either, the quality of the uploads is sub par according to many people, so we should just get rid of it. I thus propose to remove it from the main page. I have also proposed to WMF to pull the app from the store and I have updated it's Commons page to reflect it's current status. It was a nice experiment, but experiments need to end at some point. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 23:03, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

POTD 11th & 12th Sept
These images are scheduled for 11th and 12th Sept as POTD. ( Template:Potd/2014-09-11, Template:Potd/2014-09-12) As they both are related, two genders of same species, can't they be displayed simultaneously? I remember English Wikipedia has done that sometimes. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 07:46, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- Pinging @Jkadavoor: as I suppose you are active in POTDs and have created these two templates and are creator of these two images too. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 11:15, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- @Dharmadhyaksha: Hmm; they were scheduled long ago, and now set nominations are suspended from FPC. I don't know whether it is practical to reassign a new picture now as the date is very close. If possible, I've no objections. Jee 14:44, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
- @Jkadavoor: We can simply shuffle few other nominations, bring the 13th Sept to 11th or so and buy time. If nothing is possible and the two images have to run separately, i would suggest parting them. For entomology-dummies like me similar images running consecutively is bit boring and further more might just go unnoticed as well. So it is better not to edit POTD templates within 3 days unless there is a serious error. Jee 02:32, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
- @Jkadavoor and Ymblanter: Never mind now! But can we at least push the 12th POTD to some later date? Just bring 13th on 12th so no more translation works are required, am guessing the 13th one is all set. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 03:49, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

Photo challenge link on main page
Hello All! I suppose that the not-so-old Commons:Photo challenge should be given some place on our main page. I propose adding it in the "Highlights" box as "You may also be interested in Picture of the Year and Photo challenge." Some other suggestions are also welcome. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 12:03, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
- I agree that it would be good to be mentioned. The "Highlights" section seems currently aimed at people browsing for the first time and there isn't much to highlight projects aimed at contributing. Rather than wording this "If you are browsing Commons for the first time" in a way that starts off excluding lots of people, why not simply state that our best content can be found at Featured Pictures and other great material at Quality Images and Valued Images. How about:
- Our best images can be found at Featured pictures, the cream of which are awarded Picture of the Year. Other great images include those at Quality images and Valued images.
- Why not meet some of our talented photographers and illustrators, or join them and take part in the monthly Photo challenge. -- Colin (talk) 13:23, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
- This sounds better. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 05:12, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
- I would have no problem with having it advertised in the top right where the commons-app was, and where wiki-loves-monuments is at present. I don't think Commons needs to encourage mass random low grade photos (as detractors suggest commons-app encourages), but prompting more people to participate via the photo challenge would be great. --Tony Wills (talk) 10:26, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Is the Photo Challenge box a permanent fixture? It's a good start. I'd suggest perhaps reducing the font size in line with the rest, and fewer exclamation marks!!! If there is room, then rather than the rather dull SVG of a camera, we could display a thumbnail of a previous challenge winner? -- Colin (talk) 21:18, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
- I think it can be one of a number of alternative 'featured' projects etc displayed in that space. In that respect I think a different font helps differentiate it from the 'static' content. Suggestions of other projects to feature? I would prefer not to have other image content on the main page (eg past photo challenge winners, or even the previous box with POTY images) as that content distracts from the POTD/MOTD content and makes the whole page too busy. I do agree fewer exclamation marks!!! (I think I just copied that from the photo challenge page :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 09:11, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
What happened to the US government portal subpages?...
Hi ...Back in the July August time-frame I added a number of files to the US Department of Transportation page as well as adding some introductory material so that I could on this material for future Wikipedia articles... some editors on that site have asked me to use Wiki commons instead of loading files up on Wikipedia... the files that I added are still there but the page I was editing (Federal Transit Administration FTA) seems to be gone... has it been moved?.... any help would be appreciated... Want to edit description of today's Media of the Day
I just created English closed captions for today's Media of the Day, the Esperanto music video La fina venk' by translating the Esperanto subtitle file. The file's Summary Description is
- English: Video clip for the Esperanto song La fina venk’ by i.d.c. (Éric Languillat).
I'd like to add an Esperanto translation of that, but when I try, I get
- You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason:
- This page is currently protected from editing because it is transcluded in the following page, which is protected with the "cascading" option enabled:
- Main Page
The translation, in the format of the other-language descriptions I see in the source of the page, would be

which comes out as
- Esperanto: Video de la esperanta kanto La fina venk’ de i.d.c. (Éric Languillat).

cache to upload
uploading media files on is a heavy task when working on slow/poor internet connections. it takes a hell of time and also the data uploaded is lost if the connection is lost before publishing. it would be better if a temp memory is enabled within the user's profile, so that the user i.e the contributor can have the uploads saved in his/her own profile, before they make it open for the world on commons, at any instant of time like as in google docs.this helps in real-time screening of the uploads and also retrieve the data if the connection is lost as the data uploaded is saved automatically at every instant. it also helps in saving time and data usage of the user, as the user want to re-upload files as there could be interruptions over internet connection or even any other works̴Raj.palgun13 (talk) 17:28, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
Migration to new translation system
Maybe migrate this page into translation extension? This will simplify the centralized maintenance of all language versions, it will be easier to add new translations and all versions will be generally synchronous. Current scheme with localized page names will be saved.
Proposed next migration scheme
- Template:Main Page Template remains as "design skeleton"
- Template:Main Page is created as page marked for translations (with wiki-code from current Main Page; added link "translate this page")
- All exist translations is migrated into "Template:Main Page/<langcode>"
- Main Page and his translations with localised pagenames is changed to simple transcluding of "Template:Main Page/<langcode>"
Step-by-step
- Current language versions moved into "Template:Main Page/<langcode>" names; new templates immediately transcluded in old pagenames (no changes at the user's look )
- Created "Template:Main Page" as base for translations (based on Template:Main Page Template; added translation markup)
- "Main Page" moved to "Template:Main Page/en" and it transcluded in the "Main Page" (no changes at the user's look )
- needed admin rights
- "Template:Main Page" is marked as available for translations; after this all language versions temporarily become in English language (until to migration of translations)
- For each translated page executes a migration (import) the old translation (through Special:PageMigration)
Questions & Known problems
- What page should be assigned with current Main Page edit history? New base Main Page or "Template:Main Page" or "Template:Main Page/en" ?
- Some mainpages like to add individual notices/style.
Proposed by: Kaganer (talk) 23:07, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
Discussion
- Oppose. Some mainpages like to add individual notices/style. And it is also a problem with all the individual protections. And it is creating /subpages like /de /fr but mainpages have a own naming here on commons, like /de = Hauptseite. Not a good idea imho. --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:23, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
- Steinsplitter, thanks for feedback!
- "individual notices/style" - not a problem, but a task ;) Added in list above for next researches. --Kaganer (talk) 00:16, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
- "problem with all the individual protections" - please explanation for me. Any example? --Kaganer (talk) 00:16, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
- By my proposal, in new scheme Hauptseite is saved as German-language main page, but his content is replaced into transcluding "Template:Main Page/de". See these same way in Meta-wiki (still without extension). If some individual page is very different, and language community is very much against migration, this page is saved "as is", with "old style". It's very simple.--Kaganer (talk) 00:08, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
- Steinsplitter, thanks for feedback!
- And the Translate extension has a lot of bugs (including a lag)... Should not be used on the MainPage. --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:32, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
- Known bug with lag has a workaround with additional "dummy" edit. This not a problem. --Kaganer (talk) 00:08, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

- No, please, I recall this being discussed before – "Wiki Loves Food" in its current state is a contest that only a very small portion of our users (with cameras) can participate in, and as such simply shouldn't be announced on our global main page (maybe in a geo-specific sitenotice or on Indian-language main pages instead). Here is my reason. firstly, the privacy in photograph is also applied in drawing in the link i provided below, when the illustrator or photographer has no right or permission to illustrate therefore it is illegal. privacy right and the link i provided below. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Photographs_of_identifiable_people
Secondly, the issue that includes moral issue of illustrating. it stated in the link below. Moral issues Not all legally obtained photographs of individuals are acceptable. The following types of image are normally considered unacceptable: Those that unfairly demean or ridicule the subject Those that are unfairly obtained Those that unreasonably intrude into the subject's private or family life These are categories which are matters of common decency rather than law. Hi, Iwent to many big sport events last 10 years. I have 1000s of photo's from the 2010, 2012 and 2014 Summer Olympics, 2015 European Games and many more sports events. What is the best way to do that directly to Wiki Commons (without using Flickr)? I'm experienced but I don't know.. With the UploadWizard you have to label all the pictures 1-by-1 with titles, categories, description etc. I'm not going to do that. Is it not possible to have something for all the images? Many time when using the UploadWizard there is an error and you have to start all over again. Is there an upload system for the pictures on my Iphone? The UploadWizard for more than 1 picture is not possible with an iPhone, because it get's the error because they have all the same name.. Sander.v.Ginkel (talk) 22:10, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Database v collection
Edit request Mainpage currently states, "a database of 34,813,311 freely usable media files to which anyone can contribute". The word "database" is too narrow; it could mean a card catalog of 34 M media files. Poor English in POTD 9 May
The English caption to the POTD of 9 May is full of incorrect usage, evidently produced by a thesaurus or machine translation. Examples: several (some); preys (prey); owing (due); leaves (causes...to); before (previously); switch (adapt); genuine food (proper....diet); waste (detritus); cadavers (carcasses).
A corrected version of the entire caption with these minimal changes would read:
In summer, some polar bears do not make the transition from their winter residence on the Svalbard islands to the dense drift ice and pack ice of the high arctic where they would find a plethora of prey. This is due to global climate change which causes the ice around the islands to melt much earlier than previously. The bears need to adapt from their proper food to a diet of detritus, small animals, bird eggs and carcasses of marine animals. Very often they suffer starvation and are doomed to die.

Video Making of Manda Pitha is not appropriate to be uploaded on World Wide Web
I really appreciate the effort, taken by the uploader of this video, to enrich Wikipedia with such media files that showcase the tradition and culture of Odisha (a state of India). However, in my personal view, some contents of this video is not appropriate to be viewed by the people all over the world. The lady making Manda Pitha in this video is not properly dressed, which I think can create a false image of the culture of Odisha in the mind of its viewers since Odia tradition always emphasizes the proper dressing of women. Hence, it is my personal suggestion to delete this video, that can be recovered later by uploading another video which will be appropriate by all means.

Machine-readable description for main page media
Currently there is no machine-readable description for main page media (i.e. main page image and main page sound/video). It’s embarrassing, especially on Commons, after the Great File Metadata Cleanup Drive. The used templates—Main Page/potd and Main Page/motd—are protected, but I don’t even know which is the best way to fix this. Just copying and pasting the text appearing below the media is the easiest, but it makes the code even more unmaintainable. Maybe we should use a subtemplate for generating the description text, probably the same for both types. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 20:44, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Photo challenge box
Editprotected Hi. In 2015 the Photo challenge box on the main page was modified to inform about the 2015 European Science Photo Competition. Now that we have another International Science Photo Competition, is it possible to do the same? I am a volunteer at Commons Photo challenge, so I can take care that they are alternated.
Last time, if I remember correctly, the link to the monthly photo challenge was totally removed, and that was not nice. I don't expect we do the same, quite the contrary, just to put them in a certain alternation. I ping also Jarekt.
If this is not the best place, where should be such thing discussed?--Alexmar983 (talk) 11:54, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- I cannot find how it was decided in 2015, but I am sure it was there on the main page, and it remained also in December when the competition was prolonged in certain countries.
- We can just few line, logo with a link to website, and link to commons page in the text.--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:24, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
- it does have to be so drastic, we can write both.--Alexmar983 (talk) 04:22, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
- or we can have the last two weeks of November and the first of December, that would also work. Current monthly challange seem to work. we are asking less time than in 2015, and this tiem the event is global.
- Should I link to the syosp page?--Alexmar983 (talk) 07:54, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
- Commons:Wiki Science Competition 2017 is now mulitlingual and provides basic information and we had banner but still not in all the countries so this would help to get decent upload where no campaign will occur.--Alexmar983 (talk) 04:00, 12 November 2017 (UTC)
I suppose the text is something like that:
{{Main Page Template |langcode=en |Announcement Title=Wiki Science Competition |Announcement Text= <div style="margin-left: 0.3em; padding-right: 0.6em; line-height: 1.5; color: #000; font-size: 1.6em">Upload your scientific images during Wiki Science Competition 2017! Learn more about the contest!</div> <div align="center" style="margin: 1em;"> </div>
We only have 12 days left for Europe, I would ask for the whole infobox. Plus we have Asia and Africa in December so the best period could be from now to the first week of December. Than, we can put it back specifically for Africa at the end of the month if the upload is low, maybe.--Alexmar983 (talk) 04:19, 17 November 2017 (UTC)
Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Modification_of_main_page got no reply as well, i will ping some syosp if necessary.--Alexmar983 (talk) 04:20, 17 November 2017 (UTC)

- Steinsplitter great. The contest is over at different dates. Probably since Africa starts the first week of December, i will ask for few days after Dec, the 1st. I also ask the monthly theme page for coordination.--Alexmar983 (talk) 11:40, 18 November 2017 (UTC)

User:Steinsplitter the new monthly challenges are here so you can switch back to the standard layout, for some days, so they can start with enough coverage. In the meantime we decide which country to postpone the deadline and we warm up Africa, than I'll ask you to put the WSC notice back. As i said, I am not thirsty, we should share the space! I have discussed with Jarekt in the monthly challenges talk pages.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:51, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- Ok, Done. Thanks. --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:53, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
- User:Steinsplitter after circa one week considering that some big countries ending on December, the 15th (netherlands, Norway, Malaysia, New Zealand) still have zero uploaded files, it would be nice if you can put the WSC2017 banner back. I'd say for another week at least.--Alexmar983 (talk) 02:46, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
- User:Steinsplitter just in case I was not clear, I meant one week from when we switched back, that is from the 1st. I would be nice if we can have it back the banner this last week of upload 7-15 in Europe, Asia and America.--Alexmar983 (talk) 02:05, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
- Done. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:35, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
User:Steinsplitter you can remove it. But we might decide to merge some empty category in the international one, if we arrange that upload might resume from certain areas, so I'll ask you the infobox back again. In the future, I will require a brainstorming for a more flexible style (including WLM and WLE)--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:06, 16 December 2017 (UTC)

@Steinsplitter, Alexmar983, and Jarekt: why is the Photo Challenge not mentioned on the Main Page? -- Colin (talk) 15:09, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
- Template:Main Page Template has only a single "Announcement Text" which shows up in the green box on the top right, and it looks like each time there is some other competition going on Photo Challenge is temporary removed from that spot and replaced with other announcement. Perhaps we could rewrite Template:Main Page Template to allow multiple Announcements. --Jarekt (talk) 15:23, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
- (Edit conflict) The Announcement Box is used during POTY Voting for announcing POTY, as every year. Multiple announcements are currently not supported. --Steinsplitter (talk) 15:25, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
- I am not sure why I am pinged, my request was specific for December (like the previous one of 2015). What it is sure is that I am one of the only people Colin who pointed out the request openly. Usually, as far as I know, there is no calendar, no guideline, simply some people with the appropriate flag can change and remove a link with another one. I had to wait and ping to have this request processed... In any case, I support a general discussion to give space on the infobox to two challenges at the same time. That is WLE, WLM, future Wiki loves love (about communities and antropology, i think it's called this way), Wiki Loves Food and Wiki Science Competition, even the Asian month in November as far as I am concerned... with the monthly challenges I think they should share the space at the same time, and this new layout should be introduced. Or we need a more structured calendar in a subpage with specific request. We discuss sitenotices on meta, that's very similar as global impact (the main page has thousand of views per day). Whoever want to open an appropriate discussion, please ping me. Bye.--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:33, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Suggestion: give the mobile home page some love
When you land on the mobile homepage for Commons, there is no visible Upload button, there's no 'Upload file' button available in the menu, and clicking 'anyone can contribute' takes you to a page on participation, which links a whole bunch of ways to contribute - but still doesn't offer any way to upload images! I had to Google 'wikimedia commons upload' to find the appropriate page.
Given that a lot of original photos nowadays originate on smartphones, it feels like offering a friction-free method to upload via the mobile site would be desirable.
CamTarn (talk) 10:28, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- I have been informed that there is a volunteer-maintained Android app for Commons. That makes sense. Not sure whether it could/should be linked to from the mobile site? CamTarn (talk) 10:56, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- When logged in, at least on Android, the app is linked at the top of the left-hand menu, both on Google Play and F-Droid. Storkk (talk) 11:01, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
Permanent "Photo Challenge" box and optional "Announcement" box
I changed the Template:Main Page Template to make Photo Challenge box permanent and Announcement box optional. In the past we used announcement box to display periodic announcements and use it for Photo challenge otherwise. With the current system we could have up to two announcements on the top right and one on the bottom left. --Jarekt (talk) 14:33, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
Change text of "Photo Challenge" box
Current English text is: "Take some photos and upload them to meet our monthly thematic challenge, get inspiration and try new subjects! Learn more about the challenges!". I think we should shorten it to "Participate in our monthly thematic photography challenge. Get inspiration and try new subjects. Learn more about the challenge". --Jarekt (talk) 14:33, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. I've found that the main page has sightly different page layout before and after log in. Here is the comparison:
- Before log in: https://i.imgur.com/Fv1sK0m.png
- After log in: https://i.imgur.com/dPywN2m.png
Since Wikimedia Commons introduced TemplateStyles, I suggest we can try to reconstruct this page by this way, we can make use of selector to set specific style sheets for mobile screen. --Great Brightstar (talk) 14:21, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
- This is because your main page is not Main Page after logging in, as your Commons language is not English. The main page is special cased on mobile, but what the main page is depends on the interface language. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page&uselang=en is the same as logged out. (Rewriting Main Page using TemplateStyles and disabling some of the special casing would be welcome, although it won’t eliminate all of the differences, only most of them.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 10:44, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
COM:ERRORS
Is there value in setting up an error-reporting system comparable to en:WP:ERRORS? If so, how should we do it? Nyttend (talk) 04:43, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
- In my opinion, no. Errors can be simply reported on COM:AN. English Wikipedia is overly bureaucratic. Let's not import all those unnecessary bureaucracies to Commons. 4nn1l2 (talk) 05:00, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
- Bureaucracy? I'm just envisioning a section here for errors, plus (if convenient to set up) something that would appear in the admin backlog template if anything were sitting in the errors section. Finding Template:Motd/2019-05-08 (en) took a good deal of work, so instead of trying to fix a typo there yesterday, I was tempted to report it for someone else to handle, but I wasn't sure where best to report it. What could be wrong with a permanent (i.e. "do not archive") section here for error-reporting, or an automatic notification in the backlog template? Nyttend (talk) 01:04, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- Notification in the backlog may not be suitable for Main Page errors, as they need immediate attention (obviously within hours), but we have heavy backlogs here on Commons and few people care (almost 6 month for DRs, years for CfD, 200 days for OTRS, many days for edit requests, etc.)
- Setting up yet another (sub)page to watch and monitor for some errors is also bureaucratic. How many Main Page errors get reported on average? I haven't seen many (if any) such reports. Therefore, I still think reporting errors to COM:AN is the best option to get things fixed. 4nn1l2 (talk) 14:32, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- It would be appreciated if you read proposals before creating straw men and attacking them. Nyttend (talk) 01:13, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
- I have read the proposal and I oppose it. It's as simple as that. It would be nice if the focus was on content, rather than people. 4nn1l2 (talk) 01:23, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

- The Main Page of Commons has mostly two Files displayed and hence just two caption sentences. I doubt we would be having too many errors reported for these two sentences daily to warrant for a separate dedicated page. If at all some error needs reporting, its directly on this very talk page. I fail to understand the actual intention of setting up a different page, which would mostly be unused.
Currently our talk page asks us to creat a talk page on the Template of POTD and report error there; which i think is also useless and should be abolished. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {Talk / Edits} 14:03, 21 May 2019 (UTC)

Remove mobile special casing
I would like to propose removing special casing of the main page on mobile. Currently only certain parts of the main page appear on mobile (e.g. the upload button doesn’t), and also those lack styling. (I admit the lack of styling is partly because of my recent edit request, but it wasn’t perfect before, either. What is currently missing was missing also before.) The differences can be seen by comparing the English main page using English interface language and the English main page using German interface language (or any other); this is the issue mentioned in #Main Page looks inconsistent before and after log in. If you think something should not appear on mobile, it can easily be hidden from the not special-cased version (the one seen with non-English interface language), so don’t hesitate to propose it, but the default (in contrast to the special-cased one) is to display everything. If there’s consensus to remove special casing, I’ll make the edit request for the switch. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 12:27, 10 June 2019 (UTC)
- Support. It would be much more handy with it. -- ato (talk) 06:06, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
- Very much in favor of removing the special casing yes. The special casing is deprecated, and it hides the fact that our content just doesn't work on mobile. By aligning and use templatestyles, it will be better and easier to deal with differences between mobile and desktop, as there at least is visiblity. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 09:48, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for your responses! I’d expect a bit more activity on the talk page of one of the most important pages on one of the largest Wikimedia projects (with over a hundred recently active watchers, not counting several different-language main pages where I advertised this section), but if really no one else cares, I’ll go ahead and make the edit request. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 17:23, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
- With help of TemplateStyles it's possible to rebuild the mobile special casing with responsive web design, which makes the page easier to maintain for administrators. --Great Brightstar (talk) 18:35, 9 July 2019 (UTC)
- Actually this page uses TemplateStyles since about a month. This is why turning off mobile special casing can be considered at all. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:49, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
- OK, I understand, thanks, I also thought it's possible to simulate mobile special casing via TemplateStyles, which could gives you more rights to customize the mobile layout. --Great Brightstar (talk) 02:25, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

- What information are you looking for? If you know the subject, I suggest that you start with a quick search (search bar is available on the top right). If it will not return much useful information, try finding a supercategory of what you are looking for. For example, if you are searching for Postal Offices (a topic that I am personally interested in) you can try looking at the media related to buildings, government buildings, photos related to mail, etc. ℺ Gone Postal (〠 ✉ • ✍ ⏿) 10:53, 2 July 2019 (UTC)
Media of the Day: porn instead of medical/sports content
Hello! I'd like to express my displeasure with the content of today's MOTD.[1] Whereas the caption reads "The lifestyle fair Venus Berlin showed various novelties such as TENS devices, which are controlled by bluetooth from a playlist on the smartphone or Virtual Reality as a means of recreation, but also activities like free solo climbing or a mechanical bull," the video shows VR porn. Although this is an interesting field in itself and I don't oppose Commons hosting this video, the video caption does not correspond to its actual content. I wanted to share this video on my social profiles (I post a lot on medicine and sports), but after having seen that, I will refrain from doing so. I will appreciate if you (whoever curates the MOTD) pay more attention in the future. Best regards, --Eleassar (t/p) 13:00, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
- It also seems like a strange video to give as MOTD. Does it really highlight the best of Wikimedia Commons? If the central focus of the video is the two simulations/demos taking place on television screens, then that seems like it would be a copyright violation. Killiondude (talk) 00:22, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

- That's because it was on the main page. The original was deleted with only a few hours left in the day. Every single time anything racy appears on any main page people get all bent out of shape. As always though, if you have a problem with something than you should participate in the selections. There is no point in continuing this conversation since it is past the 14th and the original MOTD was removed without comment by another administrator. --Majora (talk) 02:10, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
- The correct measure to prevent this reoccurring in the future is not to participate in the selections. It is that the administrator(s) who are updating the MOTD should check whether the caption corresponds to the video content. This must be implemented in the workflow. --Eleassar (t/p) 02:18, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
- As far as I can tell, media of the day is not done by administrators. Neither is picture of the day. The templates that control them are not protected until they actually appear on the main page and that is only due to cascading protection. - The interesting question is why Multichill deleted Template:Motd/2019-07-14 (en) and associated templates less than 5 hours before the end of the day. The reason he gave is This MOTD was removed, but hell, I don't get it at all. The video is still here, it isn't a copyvio and actually there is no porn at all. Then, about an hour later, Yann recreated Template:Motd/2019-07-14 (en) with a new content. Perhaps needlessly. @Mz7: While I was adding Media of the day the video was still on the main page. It was there for over 7 hours longer. @Eleassar and Killiondude: C.Suthorn is known from "strange" (very loosely related) descriptions he gives to "his" MOTDs. Anyway, please bear in mind that everyone can nominate or even change a MOTD. --jdx Re: 08:22, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

- The video was of such a quality that I spent some time trying to figure out whether an administrator account had been compromised. Mz7 (talk) 02:55, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
- Well...it wasn't a featured item. The revival/creation of featured sounds and featured videos is rather new. The two projects only really started (or were revived) in May. There aren't enough featured media to meet the needs of that section yet and the proposal to restrict that section to only featured media was rejected until we have enough. I can assure you no admin account was compromised because featured media is not chosen by admins but by regular editors. You can participate in these selections if you wish. --Majora (talk) 03:11, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

During a voting there, we had differences about some topics that we couldn't resolve, even after filing a request for comment. We have came to the conclusion that an external arbitrage is needed. WSC2019 in November and December
Hi, as occurred in 2017 we would like to require also on the English home page the box with the link to Commons:Wiki Science Competition 2019. We can alternate for few weeks, the most crucial week is the third one when almost all the competitions will be open, and than again the first week of December when few more countries start. The code is the same of last time, I can put it here.
Please let me know if somebody can process the request, or I will ping the sysop from last time. Thank you.--Alexmar983 (talk) 01:48, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

Editing the foto of a tortured in 1973
In the German Wikipedia of Torture, there is a chapter about Chile. There are quotations,no pictures. I would like to upload a picture of a person – before and after being tortured and assasinated. Generally there will be few fotos to show what is left after torture. So this foto could be unique and could be included in any language.
The question is, whether I am allowed to upload fotos of the death person. In December 1973 I was in Chile in an UNESCO function weeks before a military putsch against Salvadore Allende. After the putsch all foreigners were considered communists and UNHCR was responsible for them. So I accompanied the Chilean party including the wife of the tortured to fetch the body. In Chile dead persons are burried in zinc coffins. We choose on with a big window.
Therefore we could make fotos of the tortured. I possess the originals so I suppose they were made by me. I have copies of all declarations and denouncements. The death person was buried by the protestant church.
I would like to upload the foto – where ?– to be used on any page. The details of the tortured: He was vietnames, his father a North vietnamese general, grown up in Paris where he studied chemistry, with a doctorate in Canada. He later met Chilean president Allende in his home in Canada and once Kissinger. For working illegaly in Canada he was to be deported to South Vietnam and choose to find asylum in Chile. He worked in a fishing project in Chile.
I am told he had a black belt, so he could have tried to defend himself on arrestation. Visiting the Chilenian military police SIM, it seemed that everybody knew the case. --Cuauti (talk) 19:54, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
- Here are my thoughts: If you have taken the photo, then I believe that this would be a great photo to have uploaded. Now, you say two things: 1) You were taking photographs, 2) You have the original of this photograph. For me this is sufficient evidence that you are the one who took this photo. However, please keep in mind that anybody can still nominate the photo for deletion after it is uploaded, it would not be a personal attack on you, but rather a way that this community calls discussions of legality of keeping the photograph. If you want to make sure that there is less of a chance of that happening, you may want to follow the COM:OTRS procedure after uploading and placing OTRS pending template in the file description to show that you did so. ℺ Gone Postal (〠 ✉ • ✍ ⏿) 10:37, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
@Cuauti: We do not have restrictions based on the subject, as long as there are no laws prohibiting it, like with child pornography. And we do have Category:Dead people with photographs of corpses. However the photographs still have to meet our copyright restrictions, so it has to be a photo you took or a photograph for which you can determine that it is in public domain. --Jarekt (talk) 19:49, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

--Makebos (talk) 19:13, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Makebos. Whenever you open anything labelled "File:" there will be a section below the image/video/audio explaining the license agreement. There are a few licenses: some will be fully public domain, some will be Creative Commons (which means you have to cite the original author), and some will be a limited use of a private domain work. In short, most things on Wikimedia Commons will need you to attribute the author. If you want a more detailed understanding of licenses, have a look at the Commons:Licensing page for more information, and at any license that is connected to the media you want to use. Hope thish helps! Bibeyjj (talk) 12:41, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
POTD captions
POTD captions are hidden behind a dozen of templates and the template system itself is an absolute nightmare. It's no wonder we constantly get horrible and plain wrong captions because there probably are just a couple of users that know or bother to discover where the captions are stored. I'm not even going to try to trace where that is. I've seen and commented on wrong species ID and other inaccuracies. And here again, we have a subspecies of a bird (Ceryle rudis leucomelanurus) under a photo of a flower! What the hell?! I'm talking about the POTD of 12 June 2020. --Exonie (talk) 19:19, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

Augmented Reality Support within Wikiversity other Wikis
According to some test with 3D Modelling and geo-location based augmented reality is seems to make a lot of sense to support 3D model e.g. with Aframe and/or AR.js in Wikiversity (and may be other Wikis). Just like MATH for mathematical expressions in articles a tag might be introduced with MODEL3D or AR that wraps the XML syntax for a 3D model within Wikiversity. On other hand 3D models can be regarded as Digital Media and therefore place just like SVG-files in commons and can be embedded from Commons to any other MediaWiki of WMF. So authors would include 3D models directly from WikiCommons like audio, video or images.
Wiki Commons stores SVG vector graphics which is of cource XML syntax defining the graphics. Embedding of 3D models could be performed just like embedding images from Wiki Commons. The only difference is, that 3D models need an additional Opensource rending libary like AR.js and/or aframe.js so that the XML-Syntax of the 3D model will be rendered properly on a MediaWiki article. In general the 3D objects ar wrapped with a A-SCENE
-tag. The following example is a 3D scene with just one box:
<a-scene> <a-box position="-1 0.5 -3" rotation="0 45 0" color="#4CC3D9"></a-box> </a-scene>
Are there any recommendation how to use 3D scene in the future that might need an import of OpenSource Javascript libraries like aframe.js or ar.js. Anyway this approach would allow us as authors/teachers in Wikiversity, Wikivoyage, Wikispecies, ... to enhance resources in many ways, e.g.:
- Molecules or crystal lattices displayed on Markers,
- ancient site reconstruction on a marker like Forum Romanum in Rome Italy,
- attach Wikiversity learning resource to real geolocations,
- explore places with 360 degree equirectangular images.
- ...
Test 3D Model in Aframe | Place 3D Model on Markers |
---|---|
See also OpenSource AR.js documentation. I do not know if that makes sense to you and it worth the effort. No worries if not, it is possible to store the 3D models on a Git respository and link them e.g. from learning resources Wikiversity to it.

Restore localised main page pointer
This was introduced in 2010 (Main Page edit 1, MainPages.js edit) but was seemingly lost by accident when in 2013 a new header was introduced (archived discussion, Main Page edit 2).
I'm leaving this message here to have a place to point to in my edits that will remove the broken JS related to this, and to my edit that attempts to restore a simpler version of it (based on Lua, instead of late and janky JavaScript code).
--Krinkle 02:04, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Krinkle: The very purpose of this JS solution was to use
navigator.userLanguage
instead of
(or anything else that depends on the user’s Commons language settings). Logged-out users will often have their Commons language set to English even if that’s not their preferred language. You could insert all links to the main page in a hidden state (e.g.<div class="localised-main-page-link" lang="de" style="display:none;">Hauptseite</div>
; instead of inline styles, you could use TemplateStyles as well) and dynamically show the one that matches using JS, utilizing the language fallback chain if possible. This would still mean an interdependence between Lua and JavaScript, but if you add a comment to the Lua module, hopefully it won’t be broken again. Unfortunately this can’t be solved on server-side without a massive amount of cache size growth (it would mean the output should be cached separately for each and every differentAccept-Language
HTTP header coming from clients, which would also open a door for DoS attacks using arbitrarily long language lists). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 10:29, 18 April 2021 (UTC) - As a side note, to optimize for maintenance costs, the list of main pages could probably be stored in JSON, which could be accessed by both JS and Lua, so that there’s one authoritative list of main pages instead of several ones that are bound to become out of sync. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 10:33, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi: I understand that that was the original reason, but I think much has changed since then. We now have the AnonymousI18N gadget, which considers http referers (e.g. Wikipedia language), and
navigator.userLanguage
, to actively invite users to switch languages. This makes the server-side more useful than it would've been previously, I think. Plus, even without this pointer, people also get a localised link to their Main Page via the logo and sidebar, which I believe didn't use to work very well, but now does. During the seven years it was broken, there appears to have been no mention of it, either as complaint or as new idea, so maybe it's something we could even remove entirely, but I thought it'd be easy enough to keep in the template to make it a little more obvious to users once they switch that a localised version exists, since we don't do that automatically currently. Perhaps with a little more work, that could be done? E.g. have "Main Page" with "uselang=nl" render as Hoofdpagina. Of course, that would probably be confusing if they keep having different layouts, so if we want to keep that separate, then automation might be worse. Right now it requires two clicks if people follow the path of least resistance (first to switch languages, then to follow the pointer). --Krinkle 18:26, 18 April 2021 (UTC)- @Krinkle: If I was a logged-out reader, I would much less consider setting the whole site to Hungarian than just visiting the Hungarian main page (the first one is a permanent configuration—which, by the way, has performance consequences as
uselang=
URLs are less aggressively cached—, while the second one is a one-time decision that I don’t have to worry about how to turn off), so the two are different enough IMO that it makes sense to keep both as JS. - What do you mean by
localised link to their Main Page
: localized to their Commons language or localized to their browser language? I experience the latter, which only means that the current solution doesn’t make much sense, since this is the one that’s duplicated in the sidebar. The user agent-based solution still makes sense IMO, see above. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 18:47, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

- @Tacsipacsi: I think the current link does have some value becausea typical user has no reason to believe the translated sidebar link will point to something other than the page they are already on. For special pages, file pages, and some translated pages, they would be right. There is one page and it is automatically translated if/when possible. The "Main Page" is unusual in this aspect, the localised pages are manually translated and only informally linked with each other. This pointer is... a pointer, an invitation to be clicked. The sidebar and logo are not.
- If we find a different position for this pointer, one that doesn't cause a layout shift or other rendering delay, we could work on restoring the JS code, but I do note again that in the seven years it was broken, there appears to have been no interest in it, so I'm inclined to just let it be how it's been for the past seven years, with the small added bonus that anons using the AnonymousI8N selector (and logged-in users), get a pointer now, at basically no performance cost.
- In addition, we also still have the collection of links at the bottom of the page with every language which can be followed by anons even without using the language selector.
- If there is interest in improving Main Page navigation, I'd suggest making the Main Page itself render with a LangSwitch so that the same URL works for everyone. And that way, AnonymousI8N which is based on browser settings, will automatically get you to the localised Main Page (instead of showing you a localised sidebar and still the same English Main Page). That might be a bigger gain and more beneficial to all users. It could work either by forcing a single layout and translating text only like with other templates, or we could even keep the current system where content can change completely if we configure LangSwitch to render entirely different pages, such as "en=Main Page/en","nl=Hoofdpagina", etc. --Krinkle 19:32, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Krinkle: You might be right that the sidebar links are less obviously pointers than this one (however, I think your actual design isn’t really obvious, although I have no better idea); I admit that the links serve purpose already in their current form. But I still think that providing links based on the user agent’s settings is usually more appropriate.
- We don’t need to find a different position for the pointer, we just need to make sure it doesn’t shift the content below it, which is quite easy—if you take my suggestion about the hidden links added by Lua, it’s enough to add
min-height: 1.6em;
to the links’ parent node (because of theline-height: 1.6
setting). This will avoid the layout shift as long as the actually shown link is not longer than one line. - I don’t think converting to LangSwitch has much value—every usual way to access the main page (sidebar, logo, going directly to https://commons.wikimedia.org/ etc.) already uses the user interface language, except for links that contain the page name hardcoded, but those ones are probably intentional and often hardcode a non-English page (e.g. links from monolingual sister projects). Also, providing substantially different content through LangSwitch can create quite some confusion. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:41, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi: Regarding the styling, I used the same style and position as it had in 2013 when it last worked. (I dug through the various histories to find when it last worked and then bypassed some of the code paths to get it to render something.)
Regarding the finding of a better position, I would consider your suggestion to reserve a blank line for this a logically new position. I suppose the downside is that it would reserve a blank line, which might look a bit unprofessional. I was hoping to find a position that naturally has white space already, but without it reserving a notable block in the layout. For example the space to the right of the site name. Having said that, that too would look akward I think, hence I haven't done either of those as of yet.
Regarding confusion in LangSwitch, I personally don't think it should matter that the source code of Main Page may be confusing to the small group of people that 1) are active wikitext editors, 2) have prior experience using LangSwitch, 3) want to modify this proxy page for the Main Page. Anyone else, e.g. people editing the template, or editing the actual page for any given language, would not see this. And we'd of course document it with an inline comment in the source code. Anyway, that's how I'd do it.
I did not realize that "going directly to commons.wikimedia.org" rendered a localised Main Page. Both as a user and as a MediaWiki developer, I must say that is very interesting. I think that means we have a really easy way to solve this problem within the AnonymousI8N code. So far, I had restisted the urge to hardcode any solution there, thinking it would require yet-another copy of the list of Main Page (bad for maintenance), or some clever logic with language fallback chains, or an extra AJAX web request (also bad for performance). But, usinghttps://commons.wikimedia.org/?uselang=nl
neatly cuts through all that. Watch this space! --Krinkle 02:00, 22 April 2021 (UTC)- @Krinkle: I tried hiding the text with
visibility:hidden
(hackish solution for the sake of testing), and I don’t think the extra whitespace is annoying there; if you want to make sure, we can add some margin at the very top of the page content area to make it more balanced. - LangSwitch would be more confusing to readers of the main page than for its editors, I think. For example if one has an account with a non-English interface language, but visits Commons logged out every now and then (from a public computer, from a mobile device etc.), they would get totally different result at the exact same URL. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:10, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Krinkle: I have just noticed the change and rather big "→ Strona główna" ("main page" in Polish) under small "a collection of…" looks horrible. And is a bit confusing at the first glance. Also I do not get the point of this, as there are links to the localized pages at the left side and at the bottom. --jdx Re: 07:53, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Krinkle: I tried hiding the text with

verwaiste Urheberrechte
--Hajo Lindner (talk) 13:01, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
It is clear to me: Actually, I am only allowed to post the photo in Commons 70 years after the author's death. But the copyrights are "orphaned". It is a "completely normal" recording: my grandfather sits at his desk in a dignified manner. I am the sole heir of the picture signed and framed by the photographer.
Question: Does something speak against putting the photo in Commons today?- @Hajo Lindner: Hallo und willkommen.
- Hi, and welcome. Did your grandfather have a contract transferring copyright to him from the photographer? Who or what inherited the photographer's rights, negatives, photography business, etc. ? If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English or German Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F or de:Wikipedia:Bildrechte#Bilder, deren Urheber nicht bekannt ist because we don't allow Fair Use here. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:38, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Jeff, thank you so much. In 1935 there were no license problems yet. In this time it was quite clear, that my grandfather could do with his photo whatever he wanted to do. Of course he didn't get the negative and the possibilities of reproduction were poor. So me too doesn't have or get the negative. But today I'm able to reproduce the printout in a acceptable quality. The link ... "Bilder, deren Urheber nicht bekannt ist" doesn't help me, because I know the author, he has signed the printout. And his name is unforgotten in the community of my grandfathers living at that time. I'm not the heir of the photographer, I'm only the heir of the printout. So, as the photo dos not have a certain specific extraordinarity I propose to add the addendum to my photo that it may not get copied for any purpose, because it possibly doesn't met the standard of Commons. Would this be o.k.? Yours --Hajo Lindner (talk) 07:18, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Sisterprojects
@Izno has put together a version of Sisterprojects-en at that uses TemplateStyles and CSS flex boxes instead of layout tables. This improves readability for people using the mobile site, as the list of sister projects will reflow instead of bunching up or adding a scrollbar. It's also better for screen readers. On desktop screen sizes, there is almost no visible difference between the two. You can compare the two versions at Template:Sisterprojects-en/testcases. If there isn't any objection, I'd like to replace the current version with the sandbox version. It should work fine with the other language versions of the template, but will have to be manually copied over. The best way would probably be to use a layout template, but that would mean that every language has the same project order (currently not the case). AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 23:17, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

- No, a layout template doesn’t mean that all languages have the same project order—only languages that opt into using that layout template. As long as these templates are not translated using the Translate extension (which I would prefer in the long run, by the way), nothing forces any language to use the layout template. I think an optional layout template would make sense even if some languages don’t use it in order to keep their order. (Probably in many of those languages actually it just happened to be different, and editors of those languages won’t have any problem switching to the same order as English.) Allowing to (optionally) override icons of projects having their own language domains (Wikipedia, Wikinews, Wiktionary, Wikibooks, Wikiquote, Wikiversity, Wikivoyage and Wikisource) while using the layout template would be useful, though: some Wiktionaries use a dictionary excerpt as their logo and want to use that icon in this template as well; this may happen in other projects as well. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 20:41, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi That's true. I've put together Template:Sisterprojects/layout, and updated Template:Sisterprojects-en/sandbox to use it. I just made everything override-able, so language-specific logos and whatnot aren't a problem. You could change the order of projects by overriding everything with the other project, the parameters would just be named differently from the project. The interwiki links are localized automatically based on
{lang}
for every project but Wikidata, but can also be overridden if there's no project or main page in that language. Wikidata uses
to translate their main page without a great way to specify the language other than?uselang=

Audio Files in WikimediaCommons
Hello Wikimedians,
It is my pleasure to inform the general public in Wikimedia Commons about an upcoming project event, which We will like carry, this project will extremely focus on how to record, convert and upload audio files into Wikimedia Commons.
The fact that many users find it very difficult to convert audio files from mp3 to .ogg extension format, that makes users unwillingly to contribute with audio files into Wikimedia Commons.
Moreover, audio files are needed, so users to contribute with that are also needed, it will be my own pleasure if you join us in this course, read the page here in Meta, feel free to contact me in my talk page. Sadauki11 (talk) 15:51, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

I think we should mark this page for translation, and the translated links of Main Page to Main Page/xyz, because:
- It's easier to search the translated version
- It can easily change the version

Improvement to Upload Wizard
Frequent users of the Wizard no doubt find it intuitive, but infrequent and dumb users like me might not. Namely, there are no descriptors on fields such as Description, Caption etc. that show where those fields will appear in the final product used in an article. When an infrequent and dumb user guesses wrong and finds the image doesn't display as expected, they don't have the ability to fully edit the file to tweak it. Naturally, this might lead an editor to delete the image and start all over, but deletion is not an option. So if the user tries to upload the image again to start over, they get a message the image already exists and the user cannot proceed. I presume there are reasons the system was designed to work this way, but it's not intuitive compared to similar systems I've used over the years. Soibangla (talk) 12:05, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

I don't want to poke too hard about this, but given the main page links Meet our photographers and Meet our illustrators, and given that it's been 13 years of leaving restorationists off the main page - during which I've created a few hundred examples - think we could maybe consider including it?
It's not very up to date, and there's probably a bunch more people that should be in the list, but I don't think that's any different to Commons:Meet our photographers. Did have more once, but this nasty little discussion caused people to pull out.
I'm not sure how many FPs I have on Commons. I know I'm approaching my 600th on en-wiki, though, so probably more than 1% of them on here, given there's about 16,000. (edit: Looks like about 360, so 2%.) Adam Cuerden (talk) 03:29, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

Edit requested Hi. The POTD supposedly shows "alder props (cones without seed)".[6] Why are they defined as 'cones without seed'? This seems like an error to me as alder cones do contain seed.[7] Also, is there any reliable source for the term 'prop'? --TadejM (t/p) 00:12, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

- The cones are open, so no doubt most of the seeds are dispersed. Not sure there is a English term for empty cones, I expect 'props' is just a transliteration from the Dutch. "Empty cones" would suffice. --Tony Wills (talk) 21:51, 29 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for the reply. I have now removed Factual accuracy and slightly rephrased the English description (replaced the unknown term 'props' with 'cones'). Feel welcome to edit it further. --TadejM (t/p) 00:23, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

Adding Wikifunctions to the sister project's list
Hi all! Is it possible to add Wikifunctions to the list of sister projects? Thanks in advance! Sannita (WMF) (talk) 14:11, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- Support I looked into implementing this, but it seems to be a rabbit hole of many nested templates. Perhaps @AntiCompositeNumber: could implement it, since it looks like they set up the system? It seems logical to replace mediawiki with wikifunctions to keep a 4x3 array of links. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 08:58, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Mike Peel, Sannita (WMF) Sure, it's possible. The complicating factor, as always, is that Commons has about 133 main pages, not just one. These pages are largely not standardized, with many not showing the same list of sister projects. I got through migrating a few dozen to use Sisterprojects layout before I got bored and found better things to do, User:AntiCompositeNumber/sisterprojects has the list. If you want to just change it on the English Main Page, then you can change
|mw-name=
,|mw-desc=
,|mw-logo=
, and|mw-link=
on Sisterprojects-en. There's no need for the parameter names to match the actual link/content as long as you set all 4, there are multiple main pages that do that for sorting reasons. Changing it on every main page that uses Sisterprojects layout is a bigger task, and changing every main page that doesn't use the template an even bigger one. I can change the template if there's multilingual consensus to do so, but I don't really have the time to copy-paste translations into templates these days. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:52, 5 May 2024 (UTC)- @AntiCompositeNumber: Thanks for the background. Why can't we simplify this to just use a single template, and use existing translations from translatewiki.net? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:58, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Mike Peel Some main pages use localized logos, some use language-specific sort orders, both of which make a single template more complex. Translations as MediaWiki messages would work, but using the Translate extension wouldn't because of the need for page protection. When I was working on this I did not seek consensus to significantly change the main pages and was trying to keep it as non-controversial as possible.
Shouldn't Template talk:Main Page Template redirect to here?
I just came across Template talk:Main Page Template - shouldn't that redirect to here? to keep conversations together? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 19:36, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support Yes, it makes sense. Yann (talk) 19:46, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- The template is used on pages other than the English main page, and the various language main pages traditionally have been managed at least somewhat separately. This means that there is wide variation between the main pages, even among all the main pages that use the template. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:53, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
Adding recently promoted quality images?
At Commons:Quality Images we have around 100 photos being promoted every day: could we highlight these on the main page? I can set up a bot script that will auto-update a list of selected images to show, perhaps on an hourly basis, and I've set up a demo of how it could look like at User:Mike Peel/Main Page. Thoughts? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:03, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- Support This is a great idea, Mike. One thing I miss in Commons is to make great images more relevant and visible, so we can attract more photographers. I would add a link to the Quality Images section, so people know that this exists. Theklan (talk) 09:07, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

- Moved over to the right in the demo, does that look better? I think there needs to be a more general refresh of the homepage, including reducing text, but that's a topic for another day. ;-) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:52, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

- Support It's long overdue to make the Main page more interesting and lively. However, I oppose only new quality images being featured which biases it toward recently promoted images and excludes previous ones while not making use of other things that could be used to identify high-quality images to show there. Also it would be nice if it was changing the image every few seconds with there being a pause button as well as slideshow buttons. Please make it show the subject (as on Commons:Quality images) with a link to the relevant category for every image (it could be shown on hover like the file-title). Prototyperspective (talk) 22:26, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Prototyperspective: I have in mind a practical way to implement this while QICbot does the work of promoting the new quality images, and changing things every hour is feasible. I have no idea how to include all quality images ever, nor how to update them here every few seconds. If you do know how to do that, please do so? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 23:05, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

- I think the benefit of this would be that one could open the Main page and see many images rather than just one that is featured, which would make the page much more interesting and versatile to people's diverse interests. The two ways for that would be to click the arrows to see the next image or to leave the page and open and see the next image after a while (40 seconds maybe enough to read the caption) which would make people become aware of the arrow buttons which they may start to use a while thereafter.
- Nothing else is dynamic on the frontpage except if there is an animated gif as motd and it would get WMC more users, raise awareness of its high-quality contents, and get its contents more exposure. I don't know if it's possible to check for slow Internet connection and only load further images for not super slow bandwidth. Lots of websites have slideshows and I think it loads only a scaled down version, not the full resolution. The carbon footprint note is beside the point, it would cause a bit more traffic but not extra emissions and in that regard is if anything a distraction, just like discussions about smartphone recharging are when a year worth of recharging is compensated by avoiding one <50 km car drive, that people still widely frequently engage in, and a miniscule percentage of people's spent monthly carbon budget.
- Is there a way to make the slideshow only show for nonslow Internet connections? Also it would need to be lazy loading so the next image is only loaded a few seconds before the next image is shown. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:38, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

Add space in caption of MOTD
Edit request A space should be added in the caption for today's MOTD, between "Spoon" and "an", because as of now they look like a singe word (Spoonan).
Should maybe have asked there, but probably no one would have noticed. — Alien333 (what I did & why I did it wrong) 14:04, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

MOTD caption
The caption says: Eqi glacier calving filmed in slow motion I suggest that the word "filmed" is superfluous and potentially wrong. The video plays in slow motion. Either way, one fix could be to omit that word. Schwede66 04:12, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
- Done Thanks @Schwede66. I have omitted the word in English caption. It doesn't make any sense to me either. It also has cs, fr and uk translations currently available, but I don't know any of these languages, for locating this specific word and removing it. Proposal to link featured galleries and Atlas of the World from Commons main page
There is a discussion here, and a proposal to vote here, to include a link to Wikimedia Commons Atlas of the World and from "Content -> By topic", at Commons main page. I propose a new topic, Maps, with the title linking to , and one link inside the new topic, for Atlas of the World.
Adding a link to featured galleries from main page has also been proposed (first there should be featured galleries, I think there aren't; the link should be in Highlights section, as is the link to featured pictures).
I'm including this proposals here as asked by JopkeB on Village Pump. MGeog2022 (talk) 18:30, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
POTD English caption, 2024-09-23
Hey! Noticed that today's English caption for POTD (Template:Potd/2024-09-23 (en)) doesn't make grammatical sense. The current caption is
- Realistic Earth drawn from the 2016 global composite map showing the city's night lights.
but I think a better one would be
- Realistic Earth drawn from the 2016 global composite map showing night lights from Asia and the Middle East.
Which is closer to the title article anyway. Pretzelles (talk) 14:38, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
No en caption for MOTD 2024-10-03
Missing Template:Motd/2024-10-03 (en) Jnestorius (talk) 20:31, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for asking about it! I asked the user to add en captions to the files he adds to the MOTD and he did not reply nor was there any action so far by anybody else in regards to adding MOTD files without captions. I previously asked another user here but apparently it wasn't the same user. I think adding captions should be a requirement where the burden is on the person adding to the MOTD and those without captions should be replaced. Is there something like an "annular eclipse"?
Isn't that title a bit misleading? ciao ̴̴̴ Pentaclebreaker (talk) 08:51, 14 October 2024 (UTC)

annular
here with annular (tooltip). There already is a wl to solar eclipse but not to that section and the term is not self-explanatory and not widely understood. Prototyperspective (talk) 09:48, 14 October 2024 (UTC)- Uhps, my fault . . . I thought of annular as "yearly", not of annular as "circular". Ciao Pentaclebreaker (talk) 10:09, 14 October 2024 (UTC)

- Done. Although I'm not sure how multilingual this approach is. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:34, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
Understanding "free"
When looking for a link to explain to a Wikimedia reuser that Commons only hosts free content the Main page didn't help. The tag line "a collection of 109,788,247 freely usable media files to which anyone can contribute" links to Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia which is irrelevant for Wikimedia reusers, who I assume are our biggest reuser. The second link is to Commons:Welcome. There, at the very bottom of the fourth paragraph (4 screens down on mobile) I found Commons:First steps/Reuse which suitably defines "free", it is somewhat burried though and has no dedicated wikilink.
Incidentally, I looked at a few of the major Wikipedias and they generally end up directing users to free content pretty quickly, I guess not adopted on Commons for multilingual reasons. Commander Keane (talk) 18:31, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- Good point so which change would you propose – adding something to the top of Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia or changing what that word links to? I think it may be best if there was Commons:Using content on Commons which includes (maybe transcludes) the part about reusing it outside and starts with info about free/open content. Prototyperspective (talk) 21:10, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- I am not 100% sure what is best, just that an improvement would be good. Maybe change the link "freely usable" in the tag line from Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia to => Commons:Reusing content.
- The Commons:Reusing content page would open with "Wikimedia Commons hosts freely usable content" and then have links to Commons:Using content on Wikimedia and Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia
- Offtopic: The Commons:First steps/Reuse section "Embedding Commons media in third-party projects" (which is currently about InstantCommons) should be called "Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia" and the scope expanded.

Edit requests
Edit request
I will make several edit requests in this thread (separately so they can be discussed individually).
1)
The page says Please use the search box at the top of this page or the links to the right. Feel free to subscribe to our syndicated feeds. but on mobile, which by now could well be how the majority of people land on this page by now, the links are not "on the right" but down.
Please change it so that it says "further down" on the mobile site (I think there already is something that does change the content depending on whether it's the mobile site) and link to that section with Template:Visible anchor (or something similar) so that the user can just jump to it to see what is meant.
Being able to jump to/highlight the section is very useful for people who find the page confusing and don't want to search around to find what is meant. I mean Content and the links to the right which should render as Content
and the links to the right
. I think the Content box is the most useful thing of the entire page and a bit buried by all the other tiles and texts. Prototyperspective (talk) 17:44, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- Could somebody implement this, it's been 21 days and this sentence is clearly false for mobile users which may well be the majority of the site's users by now. Prototyperspective (talk) 22:09, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
- I think this could be done with Extension:MobileDetect by which one could put the words into <nomobile> and <mobileonly> tags. It doesn't seem to work on Commons and I don't know if there is an alternative way to show text depending on the viewmode (mobile or not). Alternatively, please simply change it to something like the links in the Content box (not specifying whether the tile is on the right or down). I think it would be best to highlight the box when clicking on that page section link and I don't know of a way to highlight the whole tile rather than only the header via Template:Visible anchor but that would be better than no highlighting at all because users may be confused what is being referred to. Prototyperspective (talk) 23:25, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- Could you instead rephrase this as "or the content links section on this page" and link to the relevant section?
- Generally I would discourage use of mobile only markup as my experience typically it is poorly implemented by templates.
- Layout is evolving and can vary across skins, font size and browser zoom. In Vector 2022 for example layout is also impacted by whether you have both side menus open. Jdlrobson (talk) 09:23, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
- This would also be good and maybe better. If making the text responsive to which type of device is used one may "use media queries and the skin classes and fix the templatestyles" according to the latest comment in the VP/T thread but I don't know how well or even if that would currently work. A problem I noticed only after my 16 Aug comment is that it may be the case that it's referring to not only the Content box but also the "Highlights" tile on the right. So I think either the Content tile should be highlighted regardless as it seems to be a closer and more comprehensive fit to what is being referred to (and also I think the most useful thing in the Main page content especially for people looking to explore or search) or the two tiles be put into one div and highlighted at once.
- Alternatives would include merging the two tiles with highlighted media being directly above or below "By topic" of the tile and "Meet our photographers and Meet our illustrators" getting moved into the "Participating" tile. I think I would support that but it would be a larger undertaking than simply highlighting both tiles for now or the Content tile.
- Maybe I should rather make these edit requests at Template:Main Page Template (please let me know if either is clearly preferred). Prototyperspective (talk) 16:55, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

- Thanks! However, you changed something else – this request referred to the part or the links to the right but you changed the search box at the top which on mobile also is at the top of the page.
- 2. On desktop those are not at the top but at the right of the page.
- 3. Since there are many things on the right and the user, especially new ones, may be confused what exactly is meant I above suggested to link to the tile(s) that is referred to. This could be done via the vanchor template (here linking to #Content or other methods. I'd suggest to simply use the vanchor template and maybe improve it later on. Like this:
Please use the search box at the top of this page or the links further down.
- then at
|Content=Content
that would be changed to|Content=Content
which enables jumping right to it with highlighting wherever it is on the page. Prototyperspective (talk) 21:37, 28 August 2024 (UTC)- @Jarekt: It doesn't work as it's not the part I described with not "on the right" but down. Prototyperspective (talk) 21:26, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
