Dear Sir/Madam, Kindly give me the copyright to use the following figure in my future textbook. From: https://en.wikipedia.org The diagram is shown in the following: file:///C:/Users/akendoush/Downloads/Sch%C3%A9maDechetsNucleaires_en.svg Kendoush (talk) 12:30, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Kendoush: You seem to be linking to a file on your computer and not a file on Commons. GMGtalk 12:45, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is this about File:SchémaDechetsNucleaires.svg or something else? I don't see a File:SchémaDechetsNucleaires_en.svg on Commons.
File:SchémaDechetsNucleaires.svg has a CC-0 license, effectively placing it in the public domain. You should be able to use it freely, though it would be polite to credit it to Nicolas Lardot. - Jmabel ! talk 16:02, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel you blue-linked the file you didn't see... (and I'm only commenting here now because of a later header with the same title, ugh) Bastique ☎ let's talk! 02:04, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bastique: weird. Trying to work from his string (for a file on his hard drive) I must have done something wrong when I tried to access the file on Commons, then gotten it right when I typed it here.
Anyway, the advice remains the same except that Ilmari Karonen is a co-author with Nicolas Lardot. - Jmabel ! talk 03:13, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Picture

[edit]

You put a wrong information with the picture of Biden's family wedding picture. It should be Ashley Biden in the picture not Naomi Biden . Naomi Biden already passed away when she is 1 yr old 148.8.132.15 16:21, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please link to the file you are referring to. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 16:39, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My guess would be that the user is referring to File:Joe Biden and Jill Biden attend the wedding of Peter Neal and Naomi Biden Neal (52510895180).jpg. While it is correct that Joe Biden had a daughter named Naomi who passed away after less than a year, the person on the picture is Naomi Biden, daughter of Hunter Biden, so Joe Biden's granddaughter. ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 00:19, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can I upload the logo of the Irish Communist Party?

[edit]

I don't know if the logo is copyrighted so can anyone know is it copyrighted or not?

Image URL: https://www.leftarchive.ie/image/1/400/0/images/org-logos/icp.png AlienBlox the Great (talk) 20:29, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I mean, if they are communists, surely the flag belongs to everyone.... However, here on Commons the burden of proof is on the uploader to insure that an image is not subject to copyright. This page seems to indicate that most of the images on the site are fair use, Commons requires that they be freely licensed, so probably not. Just Step Sideways (talk) 21:56, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This exists
I checked the website of the party itself, and ironically these communists have copyrighted the entire site. We do already have at least two user-created images of the current flag though. Just Step Sideways (talk) 22:01, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Then they are not true believers.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 23:53, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think there is any particular Communist antipathy to intellectual property rights, except insofar as they constitute the "means of production," which a logo does not. - Jmabel ! talk 01:05, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, per COM:TOO Ireland, it appears that Ireland isn't using the sweat-of-the-brow rule in the United Kingdom, and this is complicated by a lack of cases. IMO might be on the verge of copyright protection?廣九直通車 (talk) 13:16, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

newspaper article

[edit]

Can I upload a newspaper article that relates to a "page" that I am making for Wikipedia? AnnaVeld1960 (talk) 21:13, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The newspaper article would have to be freely licensed or public domain to be uploaded here. Keep in mind that you don't need to upload an article to cite it on Wikipedia. Abzeronow (talk) 22:04, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Unless we are talking about something a hundred years old or so, the answer is probably "no", and that approaches certainty for most things in the last 70 years or so (though there are some weird exceptions). If you can't work out for yourself whether the article is copyrighted, please feel free to ask a more specific question. - Jmabel ! talk 03:16, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading a group of files

[edit]

Using Windows, I need to upload groups of photos of the same subject, so the categories and descriptions will be the same, and the name will be the same except for a sequence number.

I used to use Vicuna for this, but I can no longer get it to work. I was advised to download the vicuna zip file, go to the bin folder and run the vicuna.bat file. When I do this, Windows doesn't like it, but I tell it to run anyway. Then a command line screen comes up for a fraction of a second, then disappears, without doing anything.

Is there a way to get Vicuna to work? Is there a Windows alternative that does the same thing?

I need something like an EXE or BAT file to run. I can't run Python code. If I am taken to a list of folders on something like GitHub, I am completely baffled.

What can I do to upload a group of related photos that have most of the information in common? Bubba73 (talk) 06:40, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you start the vicuna.bat file from the file manager by clicking the mouse? Try opening a command shell and enter vicuna.bat from the prompt. You will either see the actual error message, or the program will ask you for some input parameters to run.
Or you can use the Upload wizard. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 08:41, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Photo is mine

[edit]

Hi there. I just tried uploading a photo that is mine that I wish to add to Barbara Weisberg's Wikipedia entry. I used the upload wizard but the error I received said: it could not be determined if the file was suitable. I spent hours trying to figure out what the problem is but I guess I need a very specific explanation for that file if you are able to help. I would very much appreciate it. The filename is barbaraweisbergphoto. JoClarke100 (talk) 14:55, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@JoClarke100: That is not a possible file name, because it has no extension to indicate the file type. I assume this is about File:BarbaraWeisbergPhoto.jpg.
When you say "a photo that is mine" do you mean you took the photo and own the copyright, or do you mean something else? I ask because I see we are Commons:Deletion requests/File:DavidBlack.jpg still trying to sort out the status on an earlier photo that you claimed as "own work" but 2 days ago wrote "The photo was taken by his wife in their home," and said you would sort it out through VRT. I assume that you have not yet done that, since the file page is not marked with {{Permission pending}}. (I also wonder about your assertion that the photo was taken on the day you uploaded it; please make sure to be accurate about that as well.)
I'm not expert on these logs, and I'm not sure what tool you used to try to upload. If you used something other than Special:UploadWizard here on Commons (e.g. if you were cross-wiki uploading from the English-language Wikipedia) and if you took the photo yourself, then please try Special:UploadWizard. If you did not take the photo yourself, please be more careful to accurately describe your uploads in terms of authorship and date, and to go through the COM:VRT process for third-party materials (and, again, use Special:UploadWizard).
Let me know if any of that is unclear; I know it's a bit complicated. - Jmabel ! talk 18:36, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: The page linked from the "details" link in the filter log provides information, e.g. in this case the upload attempt was with the Upload Wizard. The triggered filter is for small files by accounts with less than 25 edits. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:29, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The filename extension was jpg. I should have included it. At this point, I have removed the photo of David Black; I believe the second Barbara Weisberg photo never made it in. I will address this issue when I have more time. I really appreciate your comments. The more important concern is the article on David Black - hoping it gets approved this go-round. JoClarke100 (talk) 01:09, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JoClarke100: Was "File:BarbaraWeisbergPhoto.jpg", that you attempted to upload on 20 December 2024, the same photo, maybe of a smaller size, as File:BarbaraWeisberg.jpg deleted on 17 December 2024? If so, please do not upload multiple copies of a file. When the problem is settled, the existing file can be undeleded. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:29, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No. It was a different photo. JoClarke100 (talk) 01:03, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is this image public domain?

[edit]

I'm trying to update the page for Northrup Field https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_Field because the image in the info box is not of the same Northrup Field that the article is subject of. I couldn't find a good image existing on wikimedia, but I found this (https://umedia.lib.umn.edu/item/p16022coll175:4519) on the University of Minnesota library's website. It was taken in 1904, so from my understanding it should be public domain. Am I correct in assuming this, and is this image okay to upload to wikimedia for use on wikipedia? Mitchp10 (talk) 18:34, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mitchp10: Given that it is in the U.S. and from 1904, {{PD-US-expired}} should do. There are some ad edge cases, but they are unlikely to apply to this. - Jmabel ! talk 18:38, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do I overwrite the article and add the image. When I want to upload it know there is a warning the image is already uploaded in wiki files and I cannot add it to the article. Korntrans (talk) 13:09, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is a really confusing. It sounds like you are not doing the best process to do this. As Korntrans says, this is your file, so you can simply overwrite it.
Go to File:TGD cover.jpg. Near the bottom of the page (under the File History) you will see a link captioned "Upload a new version of this file". Click it. Upload your replacement file. That should then appear in the article (though there may be a delay due to caching).
Also: for this sort of thing, it is probably wise to go through the COM:VRT process to get a ticket that clarifies that you are, indeed, the author of the image. - Jmabel ! talk 18:04, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@WinninginJapan1999: This appears to be an account created only 3 minutes before you posted this here, so I have no idea what to make of "the admins and the filter keep brushing me off!" It does look like in that three minutes a filter prevented you from creating Category:Diagrams of speed limit signs, which would have nothing to do with creating a gallery page. Can you tell me how this would differ from the existing Category:Diagrams of speed limit road signs?

Question regarding making a figure

[edit]

I got a dataset from IMF website, say [1]. According to their website it is free to use their data so long the data are not tampered with and a citation from where the data came from [2]. Now *I* made a figure (plotting and adding explanation etc) based this dataset, and I want to upload this figure. Making the figure is my work and I do not seek any copyright. However, it is not clear what licence I should use given that the dataset is from IMF. Please advice on how to proceed, I do not frequently do this (uploading figures) so forgive my ignorance. Thank you in advance. A.Cython (talk) 03:30, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would recommend using CC-BY, with the required attribution including the credit to the IMF. - Jmabel ! talk 05:25, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel I uploaded the figure here, [3], let me know if I missed something. A.Cython (talk) 05:09, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@A.Cython: I guess I assumed more experience than you have, my apology.
When I said "using CC-BY" I meant a current version of the CC-BY license, not one that has been outmoded for over a decade, but I can see how you got confused when I didn't spell that out. Also that "subst" thing you did makes no sense at all. I can not edit a license for you in this case, because I can't license it on your behalf. Could you please replace {{self|subst:Custom license marker added by UW}} {{CC-BY}} with {{CC-BY 4.0|attribution=[[User:A.Cython|A.Cython]], using IMF data from https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/NGDPDPC@WEO/GRC/EURO/EU}}. - Jmabel ! talk 06:47, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for helping me. No worries. change the name of an uploaded picture

[edit]

Dear, how can I change the name of an uploaded picture? I uploaded the picture "PatrickRobertMartens.jpg" but the name has to be changed into "PatrickRemiMartens.jpg". How can I do this? Gr. SumMus235711 SumMus235711 (talk) 12:18, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@SumMus235711: you can make a move request. There should be a "move" tab, typically on the top nav of every file page (though some skins may place it differently). Since you are not a filemover, what this will do is to make a request for a filemover to move it.
Alternatively you can use {{Rename}}, but the move tab should do a better job of guiding you through the necessary steps.
Also, please: when referring to a particular file here, use an internal link, e.g. File:PatrickRobertMartens.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 18:08, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use help

[edit]

I have added a number of derivative images that need more information in order not to be deleted. I would like to claim 'fair use' along with listing the source. Please help to do this properly so that the images are not removed. Images add so much important context, and so many either don't know how to upload images or all of them are owned by private corporations at high fees. Help me to make the proper 'fair use' claim so that the images can be retained.ProfessorKaiFlai (talk) 18:33, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@ProfessorKaiFlai Fair use is not allowed on this website, Wikimedia Commons. It is allowed on the English Wikipedia, but its requirements are fairly restrictive. If it meets the requirements, you can upload an image to the English Wikipedia as "fair use" at w:en:Wikipedia:File upload wizard by clicking the "upload a non-free file" button. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 18:45, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks - unfortunately, usually institutions and corporates own most of the images.
I think what I will start doing is adding a link to images under External links. That seems to be the only way to make the image part of the Wikipedia record in most of these cases. ProfessorKaiFlai (talk) 18:57, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do I replace large files?

[edit]

I have a Wikimedia page with a JPG file that is larger than 100Mb. I want to post a replacement image, but I can't figure out how. I originally uploaded it using "Upload Wizard", but when I click on "Upload a new version of this file" I get taken to an "Upload file" page that doesn't allow uploads greater than 100Mb. @Pixel8tor: I'm not sure where Upload Wizard enters into what you are describing, so I might be misunderstanding you.
If I understand correctly, you are trying to overwrite an existing file. May I assume you want to overwrite a file you initially uploaded? In general, there are very few cases where you should overwrite someone else's file, and my guess is that your account does not have the privileges to do that.
Assuming I've got that right: on the file page for the file you want to replace, right next to "Upload a new version of this file" it should say "(chunked upload)". Click on the latter, not the former, to upload a file over 100Mb. - Jmabel ! talk 06:55, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your quick reply. You are understanding me correctly, I want to replace one of my uploads. @Pixel8tor It is your choice, really; that's where I chose to put it (common.js), as I want to be able to use it in every skin.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:37, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well I thought it was working but at the end I'm getting this error "FAILED: abusefilter-warning: ⧼abusefilter-warning-overwriting-artwork⧽". And the image is stuck in my Stash. So how do I prevent the "overwriting artwork" error? And is there a way to publish the file from the Stash, or is that file unusable? Pixel8tor (talk) 23:33, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pixel8tor: Log says it gave you a warning, not that it disallowed. Was there no button available with something like "Ignore warning and save anyway"? - Jmabel ! talk 04:08, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Jmabel: The message was "FAILED: abusefilter-warning: ⧼abusefilter-warning-overwriting-artwork⧽", so it *FAILED*! It wasn't just a warning. And no, the script has no way to "ignore" the failure. Pixel8tor (talk) 16:15, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pixel8tor: Also, that was File:Leonardo da Vinci - Mona Lisa (Louvre, Paris)FullResFXD1.tif, which is not JPG. In addition, someone wrote in the notes "Doesn't work with stashupload", so you may not be able to do that with bigChunkedUpload in any case. Which of the acceptable situations in MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning-overwriting-artwork applies?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:12, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Jeff G.: I'm not sure what you're asking, plus I find that page *very* confusing! I'm trying to "replace" an image file that *I* created, that's > 100MB, with a revised version that has much better color. It's as simple as that. I've done that successfully using the "Upload a new version of this file" link with other files. But, as you know, that doesn't allow file sizes > 100MB, so I tried "bigChunkedUpload.js". Which implies it would automatically overwrite my original upload. Instead I get the "FAILED: abusefilter-warning: ⧼abusefilter-warning-overwriting-artwork⧽" message and the file doesn't get published. What went wrong? Pixel8tor (talk) 16:17, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pixel8tor: It sounds from what Jeff G. wrote like you tried to overwrite a JPEG with a TIFF. Did you? If so, that is never going to work. Upload the TIFF under a different file name. - Jmabel ! talk 19:17, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I want to replace a TIFF with a TIFF. Pixel8tor (talk) 02:07, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I can't tell if you're trying to be funny, or you're trolling me. In either case it doesn't help solve my problem. If you don't have any constructive ideas for solving my issue of replacing my large file, please refrain from posting. Thanks. Pixel8tor (talk) 02:08, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading .OGG files

[edit]

Yesterday, I uploaded 11 .ogg audio pronunciation files for our Википсалълъэ (Kabardian Wiktionary) (for example, гу379гупщэ.ogg). Although the system said that the file had uploaded correctly in the first stage, apparently the control information was not recorded properly in the second. Unfortunately, I didn't write down the message, but I believe it was something about a border violation. Now the command doesn't work for this file and I am unable to use it in the dictionary. Furthermore, I am unable to upload a replacement file under a different name. I merely get the message that it is identical to an existing file. How should I proceed with these files? I tried other files today and everything seems to be working correctly again... Rhdkabardian (talk) 10:40, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Rhdkabardian: I clicked the "Reset transcode" button at the bottom of File:Гу379гупщэ.ogg, now it works perfectly. How to upload image files in NEF format?

[edit]

The current policy of Commons does not allow uploading files in NEF format, so I currently uploaded it to Google drive. Can you upload a high quality converted free-form image, thanks! Also licensed under CC-BY-4.0. Thanks! Fumikas Sagisavas (talk) 14:56, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Fumikas Sagisavas: I got the access to your NEFs. I'll process them and will put them back into your Google Drive (assuming that I have sufficient rights for that) for you to upload. I'd like to avoid uploading them here myself, as I did not learn what are the depicted motifs, so choosing sensible filenames is not really possible. I hope that you'll be OK with JPEG (TIFF is also an option, but that'll make for much longer transfer times from my connection). Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 20:22, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Fumikas Sagisavas: it's done, there are 6 JPEG in your cloud drive made out of your 6 NEF. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 21:07, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Using *Purchased* Getty Images

[edit]

I saw the previous answer about not using Getty Images, even if public domain. However, what if I purchase the image in question? I noticed that (1) some of the licenses allow for noncommercial use upon purchase (including for educational purposes and (2) there is also an option to license the image to another entity altogether (e.g., Wikimedia??). Please confirm, thank you in advance! Zurkhardo (talk) 16:48, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Zurkhardo: That's most probably not OK, unless the image is in the public domain for some other reason. Noncommercial licenses are not allowed on Commons. Yann (talk) 17:00, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Being one purchaser of a license to the image does not give you the right to relicense it, any more than owning a copy of a book lets you do the same. - Jmabel ! talk 18:55, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zurkhardo: What makes you think that any license offered by Getty Images is free enough to be usable here?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:18, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I may be misreading / misunderstanding their License Agreement: The images I'm interested in are "Rights-Managed" and state they can be used for "Newspapers and magazines (except for covers), editorial broadcasts, documentaries, non-commercial websites, blogs and social media posts illustrating matters of public interest" and that "Anyone in your organization can use it an unlimited number of times for up to 15 years, worldwide, with uncapped indemnification". Getty Images Zurkhardo (talk) 14:55, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikimedia licenses are irrevocable and exist in perpetuity, so a license with a 15-year term is invalid. There is also the problem of what constitutes "your organization," which would imply that the postulated license is not usable outside of Wikimedia projects, which again is not a valid license on WM projects. I'm confident Getty would object, as would Commons. Acroterion (talk) 17:08, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ptrdxn: this started out with you saying there is an error in an article, apparently on the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki). That has nothing to do with Wikimedia Commons. You linked a page that you can perfectly well cite in making the correction on en-wiki
You seem to be trying to upload a file to Commons. If it is the PDF from https://www.austlit.edu.au/austlit/page/A33687, please don't. Commons can accept only materials that are either in the public domain or free-licensed. That PDF appears to be neither.
In short: please deal with the en-wiki issue on en-wiki, and if you were trying to upload that particular PDF, the filter was correct in stopping you. - Jmabel ! talk 06:45, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Biography

[edit]

I would like to contribute/post my own biography, with or without a photo. Please advise about the process or direct me to a link with clear instructions. Many thanks. Talloaks2024 (talk) 21:34, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Talloaks2024: , this site is the Wikimedia Commons and the goal is to be a repository of freely-licensed and public domain media. So while we do have some DJVU and PDF files that are biographies, that is not really the general scope of this project. I recommend you poke around Commons:Welcome to understand more about this project and ask any questions here if what you find is unclear. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:39, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Talloaks2024: Hi, and welcome. I regret to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/281. Please read Mediawiki:Abusefilter-disallowed-pdf-new-user-upload again. Also, you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a pdf image as a new user, and Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg image as a new user. Such uploads of pdf and smaller jpg images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a pdf image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. In addition, any non-jpg raster image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153, but you will run into Special:AbuseFilter/281 until you have Autopatrol. Source url

[edit]

I am uploading icons from Arcticons icon pack. I already uploaded 3,612 files from it. The icons are under CC BY-SA 4.0 as stated at the bottom of the main repository page. Someone tag some of my uploads as no permission because I put the source url as the url of the latest release on github which does not mention the license itself. I did this as the pack is regularly updated and the icons could change at any time. They told me I should edit the files to add source that mentions the license directly. Do I really need to do this for all 3612 files and how should I go about it 999real (talk) 22:56, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Doubts about adding two photos

[edit]

I was thinking about adding photos to the wikipedia article of composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. I saw two but I have doubts if they should be included, and I would greatly appreciate some guidance. The first picture is this one from the Library of Congress. According to this description, the photographer has authorized use of her photographs under a Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND license, which if I am not wrong is not acceptable to include in Wikipedia Commons. The second is this one, which comes from the composer's own press kit. Would it be appropiate to add it? I am unsure of the copyright status of press kits. Thanks for the help beforehand! NeoGaze (talk) NeoGaze (talk) 00:45, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@NeoGaze On the first, per Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses you're correct, that's out. On the second, the only clear statement is "Photo by Bill Keefrey" and that's not good enough, "we" need the license clearly stated. If you want, you can mail her/her rep and ask them to add it on that page, you can point them to Wikipedia:A picture of you. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:21, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Help finding or adding photo from British Library

[edit]

Hello and thanks for your patience as I feel I'm losing my mind.

As part of my work on English Wikisource, I am currently transcribing and proofreading the 1611 edition of the King James Bible. I am presently trying to obtain a better version of the image at en:wikisource:Page:BibleKJV1611-001.pdf/76. This is a map by John Speed done for the 1611 edition of the KJV. I have found a few variants of this map already on commons, such as File:Canaan..._Begun_-_by_Mr_John_More_;_continued_and_finished_by_John_Speede_-_btv1b8491520b.jpg, File:John Speed, Canaan (FL36012616 3911705).jpg, and File:John Speed, Canaan (FL45605174 3942061).jpg. However, these are other versions of this exact map, and not good enough for use on this specific project. I have found the most reliable way to identify this *specific* image is by identifying one in black and white, looking at the "sea monster" in the center, which in the correct version is somewhat dog-like and faces the reader's left, and of course verifying that it says "1611" in the center bottom.

I have found a good-quality reproduction of this image at the British Library, shelfmark "Maps.*695.(2)". I have tried to find if this exact image is already in commons by searching for this shelfmark and in the category Category:Images from the British Library Mechanical Curator collection and subcategories. I've also looked at the British Library's Flickr page, but as you can see, these collections are both enormous and very difficult to search through. I have a persistent identifier for the image I need, and yet I cannot find it. I am trying to upload this image according to the standards set by the project Commons:British Library/Mechanical Curator collection, but that project seems to be more or less abandoned.

I am asking for help in one of the following ways:

  1. Locating a copy of this image already on wikimedia commons, so I can appropriately categorize it and include it on the Wikisource project
  2. Finding a high-quality copy of this image from the British Library in a way that has a clear free license or is public domain (ie from its flickr account, as the normal 'checkout' process on the BL's website does not grant an unlimited free license for use, despite the image {probably} being PD)
  3. Locating another high quality image of this two-paged map, that is an adequate reproduction of the illustration as it originally appears in the 1611 scan linked above. Another, similar image is inadequate for the standards of English Wikisource. OR....
  4. Giving me assurance that despite appearances, I can just download the image through the BL's normal "checkout" process and upload it here as an image in the public domain, despite BL's default non-free license.

Please help me. I'm a fairly experienced commons user, but dealing with massive pre-existing collections is always a pain, British copyright makes no sense to me, and Flickr's search is broken beyond repair. Thank you! Mathmitch7 (talk) 18:58, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Mathmitch7: If the image is clearly in the public domain, we (Commons) don't really care about the provenance of a particular copy. In particular, it is not our job to verify that you obeyed the British Library's user licensing agreement. On the other hand, if they were to sanction you for breaking their ULA, that would not be our affair, either. - Jmabel ! talk 06:55, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

AI upscaling

[edit]

File:The Birth of Ephraim.jpg looks like it could be an AI upscale, what's the protocol? Temerarius (talk) 22:48, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say just revert. Have a look at what it did to where Ephraim's hand meets his mother's face. And people (User:Kattimattinen, in this case) should not be overwriting other people's uploads with things like this. Want to upload your own, possibly problematic, AI-"enhanced" version of an image someone else uploaded? Upload under a different filename. - Jmabel ! talk 00:21, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
revert is done. No need for counterproductive AI stuff... Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 00:24, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
