Hey, I am represent Nora and this image is not up to date. She will very happy if you can remove this photo. Thank you Galmesika (talk) 18:37, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
- Keep. Being old and out of date isn't a sufficient justification for deletion. There is no reason that Commons shouldn't host images of an individual at different times in their life. If the nominator would like to upload a properly licensed photo that is more up to date, that would give Wikipedia editors options to choose from. PCock (talk) 20:07, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

This is a very poorly edited version of File:BarlowGirlWithFan12052005.jpg. A person has been edited out of the original image. I have no objection to cropping or making adjustments in contrast, saturation, etc, but I do not believe that images should be doctored in this way. There is no proof that the image's status is {{PD-old-70}}. The source is Naver, a search engine. It doesn't identify the author, nor specify the year the item was created. It is a nondescript French frigate circa 1670s, see sourcing on this (exact same, higher-quality, correctly sourced) image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Frc3a9gate-c3a0-la-voile1.jpg Qwo (talk) 17:50, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

- Where the SVG version is a derived work, we must ensure correct attribution, which often is via the original work. Here most SVGs seem to be independent works, is that correct use of the SVG version template? Anyway, "what links here" need to be checked to avoid breaking attributions. –LPfi (talk) 21:00, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
- Spot-checking, I have found none that are actually protectible content, but instead are simple facts of nature represented in a fairly mechanical way and should be tagged {{Pd-chem}}. @LPfi: you said "most SVGs seem to be independent works", emphasis mine; have you found any that are actually DW? DMacks (talk) 00:01, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- No, I haven't. I just think that the "has SVG version" template should be used for more or less identical versions, that for more complicated schemas would imply derived work. –LPfi (talk) 06:23, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

DMacks (talk) 00:01, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- I’m not an expert in chem stuff I just moved a file from en.wiki and got a notice. File:Threonine wpmp.png is marked as disputed but there is no arguments why as far as I can tell. Also the disputed tag was added by nomination and the edit summary is something like removed category x, added category y, using HotCat. So if someone monitor the file they have no chance to see that someone dispute the file.
- I would prefer that at least 2 users confirm that the file is incorrect before we delete and I think it is hard in this case where there is a mass dr.
- Also should an svg is available not only be used if the svg is the same as the original? And if the original is incorrect then the svg is incorrect too? --MGA73 (talk) 14:52, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- For the file File:Threonine wpmp.png, the {{Disputed chem}} template gives the reason as "Ambiguous stereochemistry". This comment applies to the image because, according to internationally accepted guidelines for drawing chemical compounds, "stereobonds between stereocenters should be avoided at all costs" because of their ambiguity. By contrast, File:L-Threonin - L-Threonine.svg for example is drawn correctly and is helpfully listed in the {{Vector version available}} template as an alternative that can be used in place of the incorrect one. Marbletan (talk) 12:14, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- Delete in general. I checked each of these manually: none are used anywhere ("File usage" blocks on the image page) and there are no backlinks ("What links here") other than discussions/notices related to the images or personal-upload galleries/abandoned sandboxes, except the following:
- Redirects:
- I spot-checked some for the types of mistakes, and they all seem legitimate reasons for deletion (such as missing bonds or atoms, incorrect charges, or incorrect geometric details). A factual mistake in an image whose content is the conveyance of facts puts it outside COM:EDUSE even if there weren't an alt available. Two caught my eye:
- File:Ölsäuremethylester.svg This is a real chemical with the trans double bond, just not the chemical given in the title+description. Keep rename to File:Methyl elaidate.svg but Delete the nominated incorrect-name (do not retain as redirect).
- File:Steroid hormones, cortisol and Vitamin D3.png is identified as the replacement for File:Steroid hormones, cortisol and Vitamin D3.jpg. These are same visual content just different formats, so Delete also that .jpg because it has the same factual problems. Both unused (we have .svg of each constituent structure).
- I'm taking no position on the properness of the SVG-available tagging. Seems like that would merit a more centralized discussion rather than a niche-topic DR. But I think it's irrelevant to this DR also, since all it did was lead the nominator to uncover a bunch of files that are each problematic. DMacks (talk) 02:06, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- I like your suggestion for Ölsäuremethylester.svg, so I have renamed the file, changed its description to match the depicted chemical structure, and withdrawn it from this deletion discussion. Marbletan (talk) 18:30, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- File:CoenzymeA structure.png Delete - As pointed out, an unnecessary methyl group has been added. I also checked the reference book I was using at that time, but the correct structural formula was described. I uploaded the one that caused an error when drawing. Please delete it. 儀藤 陽 (talk) 05:04, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

- Comment It's not clear to me from the link exactly what Slovenian rules are regarding architecture. "Threshold of originality" states: "only the works that constitute an original artwork are copyrighted", which is clear, but otherwise, is architecture considered an applied art, and if so, what are the rules about photographs of applied art? I will note that if the date of 1969 is relevant, https://perla-novagorica.com/en/events/26-years-of-happy-stories would be clear enough in showing that the resort dates from 2019-26=1993, well after that year. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:39, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

- i'll pick File:Thomas Patrick Norton II (1920-2011) and family on September 28, 1958 at 268 Gordon Drive in Paramus, New Jersey for Lutheran baptism of their child.jpg as an example.
- how many "coloured photos of a family in new jersey in 1950s" are there on commons? is this user gonna upload his "in scope" photos of the same topic if these are deleted? RZuo (talk) 09:04, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
- in fact, right now there're <200 photos of nj in 1950s, and all are black and white and very few are of humans: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&limit=1000&ns6=1&sort=create_timestamp_desc&search=insource%3Acategory+deepcat%3A%22New_Jersey_in_the_1950s%22+-insource%3Acensus . i'm looking forward to this user's contribution of his encyclopedic photos. - Keep as uploader, the images I uploaded are no different than the image recently uploaded by the nominator himself. See: File:Patrons dancing inside Spider's Kelly.jpg where we have an ordinary image of ordinary people at a particular time in a particular place. These images capture fashion and interior design, which changes from decade to decade, and more recently changes even faster. It is rare to have a set of images that can be tied to a particular location and a specific date. Dated images are used by researches to aid in attributing a date to images which have no dates associated with them. See for instance the Flickr Commons project to add context and dates and locations to images from the Bain Collection here and here. --RAN (talk) 16:34, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
- Comments.
- I withdraw my nomination of File:Janice Nicolich on May 27, 1961.jpg : Janice Nicolich seems to be above the threshold of notability. But I maintain the other nominations.
- File:Arthur Oscar Freudenberg (1891-1968) and family on Easter Sunday, 1960.jpg, File:Arthur Oscar Freudenberg (1891-1968) on Easter Sunday in 1960 in Jersey City, New Jersey.jpg, File:Paul John Schwendel I (1941-1996) at 268 Gorden Drive in Paramus, New Jersey for Christmas, 1960.png, and File:Thomas Patrick Norton II (1920-2011) and James Joseph Norton II (1929-2011) and Judith Elizabeth Norton in 1953.jpg do not meet the two criteria of Commons:Project scope. They are family pictures of non notable people and they are not in use in any other Wikimedia project.
- File:Anthony LeRoy Winblad (1912-1970) at the wedding of Paul John Schwendel I (1941-1996) and Joan Elizabeth Van Deusen (1941- ) on 27 May 1961 in New Jersey.png is in use in Anthony LeRoy Winblad (Q65187741), but the Wikidata page does not respect Wikidata's notability policy, and the circular justification between Commons and Wikidata comes very close to "gaming the system".
- Same concern for File:Paul John Schwendel I (1941-1996) at 268 Gorden Drive in Paramus, New Jersey for Christmas, 1960.png. The fact Paul John Schwendel II (Q76448183) has the property of birth in Weehawken leads to the absurd consequence this image has been picked by a bot to illustrate a WPcy article on this city, while this person is clearly not one of its notable children.
- If the closing admin decides to delete File:Arthur Oscar Freudenberg (1891-1968) and family on Easter Sunday, 1960.jpg, the derivative version File:Arthur Oscar Freudenberg (1891-1968) and family on Easter Sunday 1960 (enhanced).jpg should also be deleted.
- I will be very happy to discuss the encyclopedic value of File:Patrons dancing inside Spider's Kelly.jpg since I am currently working on the subject, on the file's talk page or my own talk page, but I don't think it is appropriate to discuss it here. — Racconish 💬 17:16, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
- I would like to point out rule 2 of Wikidata notability: "It refers to an instance of a clearly identifiable conceptual or material entity. The entity must be notable, in the sense that it can be described using serious and publicly available references. " Those identifiers at the bottom of the Wikidata entry are serious and publicly available references. There currently is no active project to have a bot load every entry in Findagrave or Familysearch, because of the Herculean task of disambiguating and matching to existing entries. It took a year to clear out the backload of entries for The Peerage, which was a fraction of the size of other two databases. --RAN (talk) 17:40, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

- Crowdsourced info, but under the editorial control of Ancestry.com, that makes corrections. For instance, our two most used Identifiers, LCCN and VIAF have over 500 identified errors that may never be corrected. See: Wikidata:VIAF/cluster/conflating_entities just for the tiny portion that are conflation errors. --RAN (talk) 00:11, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
- (Edit conflict) @Racconish I don't understand the argument "[list of images] do not meet the two criteria of Commons:Project scope. They are family pictures of non notable people and they are not in use in any other Wikimedia project." There are no numbered criteria in the policy, and I cannot see anything resembling the notion of "the two criteria". There is no mention of "(non) notable people" on the page. There only needs to be a realistic educational use, and as we don't have many similar images, already being examples of family photos of the time is a realistic educational use – hardly in Wikipedia, but in other contexts. –LPfi (talk) 18:09, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

- Can you explain how the Wikidata entry for Anthony LeRoy Winblad (1912-1970) violates Wikidata:Notability, you have a habit of making claims by pointing to our guidelines but never providing an explanation. It is like telling people the answer is in the Bible, but refusing to tell them the chapter and verse. Is Anthony LeRoy Winblad (1912-1970) using Wikidata for self-promotion? Is their no structural need for him among the other family members in Wikidata? Can he not be described using serious and publicly available references? Tell us your rationale, rather than just saying "not notable". --RAN (talk) 13:51, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

- Weak keep, per Jmabel. However I note that File:Arthur Oscar Freudenberg (1891-1968) on Easter Sunday 1960 at her home at 112 Grace Street in Jersey City, New Jersey.png [SIC] is not nominated for deletion. As such, File:Arthur Oscar Freudenberg (1891-1968) and family on Easter Sunday, 1960.jpg is a strong keep as the former is a derivative of the latter. Nominating the parenet for deletion on scope basis does not give a free pass to deleting the derrivative. (and this would apply to any such original-derrivatve pair). Also strong keep File:Paul John Schwendel I (1941-1996) at 268 Gorden Drive in Paramus, New Jersey for Christmas, 1960.png, and any others which are in use. - Strong delete: support DR and additional rationale under "comments", not even close to being notable. This user is clearly using Commons (and Wikidata and Wikisource as well) as a personal memorial site for his family. Nothing particular noteworthy otherwise to these photos to render them educational. --P 1 9 9 ✉ 18:06, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
General issues on scope and notability
[edit]"Out of scope."
Commons:Project scope has the following requirements: --RAN (talk) 18:08, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
- Must be a media file. Done
- Must be of an allowable free file format. Done
- Must be freely licensed or public domain. Done
- Must be realistically useful for an educational purpose. Done visual identification of a person with a valid wikidata entry.
- Must not contain only excluded educational content. (this is very poorly worded with a double negative to the point of being incomprehensible) Done it appears to exclude images of text only documents, yet we have over 10,000 books in pdf or djvu file formats.
- "A media file that is in use on one of the other projects of the Wikimedia Foundation is considered automatically to be useful for an educational purpose". Done
"non notable people"
You cannot apply English Wikipedia notability rules at Wikidata and at Commons. Currently we have over 5,000 images in the various categories marked as "unidentified people". See: Category:Unidentified people with a severe undercount, we have over 100,000 images with no category at all. Also note that stock image companies have none of the people identified in their images. See Shutterstock.com for just a single company with over 100,000 images of people doing ordinary things. If those images are useful at Shutterstock, they are just as useful here, for the same purpose. Every educational PowerPoint presentation I have been forced to watch at a corporate meeting or trade show is stuffed with stock photos of nameless people doing ordinary things. --RAN (talk) 18:23, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
- visual identification of a person with a valid wikidata entry. This is exactly where these images are out of scope. I know you like to keep every photo of every person ever uploaded, but it has been well established that it is NOT in Commons scope to identify every person that ever lived. And making categories and WD items and interlinking them doesn't make someone notable; that is just gaming the system. --P 1 9 9 ✉ 18:13, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
- You wrote: "This is exactly where these images are out of scope", can you quote an actual Wikilaw? We tend not to keep images and Wikidata entries of living people that are involved in "self promotion". One reason is that we can't tell if they are real or not, they may be creating entries for fake bot accounts, to make them look like real people. Dead people rarely promote themselves, because they are dead. Commons scope is to support other projects in the WikiUniverse without prejudice or bias. If a person is Wikidata notable, Commons should not be objecting based on the English Wikipedia standard of notability. We should also not be objecting to the quantity of images of a person, until they exceed the number of images we domicile for penises and cats and dogs (over 5,000 for each category). If your worry is that we are running out of storage space and we need to delete old images to make room for new images, we actually don't delete the images, they are just hidden from view, so no space is saved by deleting-from-view. -RAN (talk) 16:17, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
Kept: per Jmabel. I don't think these people as such are notable, the photo quality is not great, but acceptable for the time. An argument can be made that such images are in scope because they show life, clothes fashions, furniture etc. at a certain place and point in time. If we had thousands or even hundreds of these showing New Jersey at the end of the 1950s / early 1960s we would probably need to be a bit more selective. --Rosenzweig τ 21:19, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

Anthony Albanese portraits
[edit]The portrait is not made by the Australian government. The portrait is featured prominently on [9], and its copyright policy states "With the exception of the Coat of Arms and all photos and graphics, this website is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence." - The copyright status is unclear. We need a specific license rather than a blanket "all images on this website" thing. The image is used in other places on the web, including the ALP, none of whom give any attribution or sourcing. We cannot use an image that just "falls out of the sky" like this. As an aside, I don't believe that just because the Commonwealth owns an image it is automatically free to distribute. The US federal government has that policy, but Australia does not. --Skyring (talk) 20:29, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

Most photographs of Australian politicians are taken by a third party photographer, but held under licence by the Commonwealth Government, such as this photo of Scott Morrison, which comes from the same webpage. I am currently seeking more information about this photograph of Albanese, and will provide it once I find more. However, I do not believe that this image should be deleted. -- DTH89 (talk page) 9:11, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
- Keep - per above rationale, that image of morrison was released under the same licence in 2014 but he was the PM of australia in 2018. I also looked these up before updating the current image of Albanese. His team have also released another image with the same licence and both can be used on wikipedia IMO, but i personally prefer this image because he is wearing glasses in them and Albanese just like Morrrison is bespectacled and is more recognized that way--Stemoc 04:56, 3 June 2022 (UTC)
- The Labor Party photo is a different situation entirely. Their copyright policy [11] explicitly only allows that one picture to be licensed under CC-BY-SA 4.0, and not just any photo of Albanese. We shouldn't keep a photo just because it looks better than other photos on Commons. We need proof that the photo is freely licensed. I will be OK with keeping the photo if we get VTRS confirmation from the Australian government, the Labor Party or whoever the copyright holder is. FunnyMath (talk) 22:24, 4 June 2022 (UTC)
Keep - as stated in the licensing info provided by the uploader, the photograph was published on a website where all material (including images) is published under CC 4.0 except for content supplied by third parties. It is not unreasonable to assume the Australian government owns the licence to a portrait of the prime minister that they are using on their own websites. Further, the copyright disclaimer of the department website states the department has made "all reasonable efforts" to label material where copyright is owned by a third party. Is the deletion request asserting that the department has made an error and has failed to label a third-party work in this way? In any case, the arguments made by the original deletion request appear to be be 1) this was not made by the Australian government (but whether the Australian government created the work is not the question, the uploader is not relying on this in the licence, indeed a work being made by the Australian government does not give it any sort of special status) 2) this was published on pm.gov.au which does not license images under CC (but this is not relevant, as the photo was also published on pmc.gov.au where images are licensed under CC). Files found with Special:Search/Chalicarne
[edit]These two 1913 French posters are signed, so they are not "anonymous" as claimed. They are apparently the work of an artist named François Chalicarne, apparently from the "Atelier Chalicarne" in Paris. I could not find out when he died, but he could have lived beyond 1951, which would mean his works are still protected by copyright. The files should be deleted unless conclusively shown to be either in the public domain or under a free license. If no death date of the artist is named, the files can be restored in 2034 with {{PD-old-assumed}}.

- Update (see below): It's actually Louis Ferdinand Chalicarne, 1879–1971, and the files can be restored in 2042. --Rosenzweig τ 10:55, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
- Bonjour Rosenzweig,
- Cordialement, Kasskass (talk) 18:49, 14 June 2022 (UTC)
- If they are signed, they are definitely not anonymous. And this even is a case where the author is identified (it's François Chalicarne), but we don't know the year when he died. Please read Commons:Project scope/Precautionary principle if you're not already familiar with that Commons policy. Regards --Rosenzweig τ 18:58, 14 June 2022 (UTC)
- Ok.
- Some weblinks for François Chalicarne, F. Chalicarne or Atelier Chalicarne: [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] (p. 78) --Rosenzweig τ 19:44, 14 June 2022 (UTC)
- Here's a weblink for a film poster by Atelier Meste et Chalicarne from 1912: [19] The Atelier part is written in a very similar way, so Mr Chalicarne probably worked at Atelier Meste et Chalicarne before turning into just Atelier Chalicarne in 1913. And here's a weblink for a 1936 French tourism poster by L. F. Chalicarne: [20] ([21], also at Pinterest). The "L. F. Chalicarne" signature is very similar, almost identical, to the "F. Chalicarne" signature, so this is probably the same person, still active two decades later. --Rosenzweig τ 21:35, 14 June 2022 (UTC)
- "je dis que sauf preuve du contraire, l’œuvre est dans le domaine public" wich means "I say that unless proven otherwise, the work is in the public domain": No. Commons:Project scope/Evidence: “In all cases, the burden of proof lies on the uploader or other person arguing for the file to be retained to demonstrate that as far as can reasonably be determined: * the file is in the public domain or is properly licensed, and * that any required consent has been obtained.” The bottom line is: This artist is not anonymous, we do not know when he died, and in that case, the only license tag in our rules that allows us to host such files is PD-old-assumed for works that are over 120 years old. And these works are not yet over 120 years old. --Rosenzweig τ 21:54, 14 June 2022 (UTC)--Rosenzweig τ 19:48, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

- OK, I think I've found him in the Grand Mémorial: Louis Ferdinand Chalicarne (so the François various websites write about is probably wrong after all), born October 21, 1879 in Soulaines, département Aube, first drafted into the military in 1899, profession dessinateur lithographique, living in Paris, served in the First World War, relieved of military service (libéré du service militaire) on November 10, 1928. There's no date of death there either. MyHeritage says he was baptized on October 25, 1879 in Soulaines, Ancestry says he was a registered voter in Paris in 1909, nothing more about him there. He was a freemason in the Grand Orient de France in the 1930s: Journal officiel de l’Etat Français, September 2, 1942, p. 2996. If he was born in 1879, definitely alive in 1928 and apparently still alive in 1936, he could have died aged 60 in 1939, but he also could have died aged 80 in 1959. So unless someone finds a definitive date of death, PD-old-assumed 120 years after publication still seems the best option. --Rosenzweig τ 22:41, 14 June 2022 (UTC)
- Found him in this Geneanet family tree. It says there that he died July 20, 1971 in Chelles, département Seine-et-Marne, aged 91 years old (though the date of birth is given as October 24, 1879 instead of October 21, but this must be the same person; the list of freemasons also gives Chelles as his then latest place of activity). This means the files can be restored in 2042. --Rosenzweig τ 10:35, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
- Bonne continuation, Kasskass (talk) 19:28, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
