Frohes Neues Jahr!
Herzliche Grüße aus good old Germany, --Aristeas (talk) 10:46, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023
Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.
All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- You can use tags to filter edits in the recent changes feed or on your watchlist. You can now use tags to filter out edits you don't want to see. Previously you could only use tags to focus on the edits with those tags. [1]
- Special:WhatLinksHere shows all pages that link to a specific page. There is now a prototype for how to sort those pages alphabetically. You can see the discussion in the Phabricator ticket.
- You can now use the thanks function on your watchlist and the user contribution page. [2]
- A wiki page can be moved to give it a new name. You can now get a dropdown menu with common reasons when you move a page. This is so you don't have to write the explanation every time. [3]
- Matrix is a chat tool. You can now use
matrix:
to create Matrix links on wiki pages. [4] - You can filter out translations when you look at the recent changes on multilingual wikis. This didn't hide translation pages. You can now also hide subpages which are translation pages. [5]
Changes later this week
- Realtime preview for wikitext is a tool which lets editors preview the page when they edit wikitext. It will be enabled for all users of the 2010 wikitext editor. You will find it in the editor toolbar.
- Some wikis will be in read-only for a few minutes because of a switch of their main database. It will be performed on 10 January at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis) and on 12 January at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis).
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 January. It will be on all wikis from 12 January (calendar).

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2022! Please help with this survey
Dear Aristeas/Archive 2023,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2022, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 150K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 35 countries around the world.
You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.
Please fill in this short survey and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2022.
Kind regards, Wiki Loves Monuments team, 09:40, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

Problems
- The URLs in "prev" links on page history now contain
diff=prev&oldid=[revision ID]
in place ofdiff=[revision ID]&oldid=[revision ID]
. This is to fix a problem with links pointing to incorrect diffs when history was filtered by a tag. Some user scripts may break as a result of this change. [6]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 January. It will be on all wikis from 19 January (calendar).
- Some changes to the appearance of talk pages have only been available on
Talk:
andUser talk:
namespaces. These will be extended to other talk namespaces, such asCommons talk:
. They will continue to be unavailable in non-talk namespaces, includingCommons:
pages (e.g., at the Village Pump). You can change your preferences (beta feature). [7] - On Wikisources, when an image is zoomed or panned in the Page: namespace, the same zoom and pan settings will be remembered for all Page: namespace pages that are linked to a particular Index: namespace page. [8]
- The Vector 2022 skin will become the default for the English Wikipedia desktop users. The change will take place on January 18 at 15:00 UTC. Learn more.
Future changes
- The 2023 edition of the Community Wishlist Survey, which invites contributors to make technical proposals and vote for tools and improvements, starts next week on 23 January 2023 at 18:00 UTC. You can start drafting your proposals in the CWS sandbox.

Sulfur crystals nomination
Dear Aristeas, I am sorry for the delay in replacing the cropped version in the sulfur image nomination. My daily access to the internet is a few minutes and most of this time is spent wrestling with VPNs, so I'm not online much anymore. As soon as a stable connection is established, I will modify the file name and create a deletion and replacement nom. IamMM (talk) 14:59, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
- IamMM I made a small correction to your message, hope you don't mind. I apologize to both of you for the incomplete picture I uploaded that caused these problems, I did not mean to disturb. Sincerely MaHaN MSG 16:26, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
- No problem, IamMM and Mahan. I think I could do the file renaming, this is a rather undisputed thing … --Aristeas (talk) 17:47, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hello IamMM, I have renamed the file, it’s now at Microscopic image of crystals growing from melted sulfur.jpg (and the cropped version accordingly). I hope this is OK for everybody. --Aristeas (talk) 19:26, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you Aristeas. I requested to moving some other images of this photographer because apparently they all have naming problems.
- Dear Mahan, there was no need to apologize for a software problem, I had no doubts about your good intentions. -- IamMM (talk) 23:14, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

- Wikis that use localized numbering schemes for references need to add new CSS. This will help to show citation numbers the same way in all reading and editing modes. If your wiki would prefer to do it yourselves, please see the details and example CSS to copy from, and also add your wiki to the list. Otherwise, the developers will directly help out starting the week of February 5.

Recent changes

Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 February. It will be on all wikis from 9 February (calendar).
- Previously, we announced when some wikis would be in read-only for a few minutes because of a switch of their main database. These switches will not be announced any more, as the read-only time has become non-significant. Switches will continue to happen at 7AM UTC on Tuesdays and Thursdays. [14]
- Across all the wikis, in the Vector 2022 skin, logged-in users will see the page-related links such as "What links here" in a new side menu. It will be displayed on the other side of the screen. This change had previously been made on Czech, English, and Vietnamese Wikipedias. [15]
- Community Wishlist Survey 2023 will stop receiving new proposals on Monday, 6 February 2023, at 18:00 UTC. Proposers should complete any edits by then, to give time for translations and review. Voting will begin on Friday, 10 February.

Viele Grüße --A.Savin 14:50, 17 January 2023 (UTC)

Grüße --A.Savin 17:26, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
--Aristeas (talk) 09:16, 18 January 2023 (UTC)

Herzliche Grüße Botanist in Berlin (talk) 10:06, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

New gallery
Hi Aristeas, I saw that you have created a new gallery, Cemeteries. Good idea! I know just how tricky it is to add a new page with all the links, templates, pages, whatever, and you managed it very well. Just one page left: Commons:Featured pictures#Places, easy to overlook. It is a bit of a maze to get into the code there, but you have to add it there too. I'm sure you can do it, but if you have any problems, just let me know and I'll fix it. Thank you for maintaining that section! --Cart (talk) 10:26, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Cart, thank you very much for your nice words – and especially for the hint! I have tried to fix the issue with this edit; the Wikitext of that page is indeed complicated. Could you have a look and tell me whether you think it’s OK now? Thank you again and all the best, --Aristeas (talk) 11:15, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
- It looks fine to me, so job well done. The important thing is to give the new entry a unique first parameter, in this case you used "8c9", the rest is just copying. I could just have fixed it, but I figured it was better to let you do it and get acquainted with that part too. I can honestly say that I'm not 100% certain I know or have found every little bit of code that makes up the gallery section and how it interacts with the rest of Commons, but it seems to be working anyway, so fingers crossed. Thanks again, --Cart (talk) 14:15, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
- Cart, I have to thank you! Best, --Aristeas (talk) 15:36, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
Hello Cart, while we are at it, here is a related question: Are there any other new gallery pages/sections you would suggest me to create? You have more experience and are the best one to assess this. One item which comes into mind is the Rail vehicles section which counts almost 200 entries. Of course some of the photos contained in that list could also be moved to the “Natural scenes” galleries (because in some cases the train plays only a very small part in the composition), and one or two would IHMO fit better into the “Bridges” gallery. But even then the remaining items would constitute a nice new gallery page, especially when that page would be structured by countries, like similar pages. Would you agree that this is a rewarding next task? And/or have you other suggestions for useful new gallery pages/sections? Best, --Aristeas (talk) 16:20, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
- I'll get back to you on this later, might take a day or two. I'm a bit pressed for time now and not all that updated on the overall state of the galleries. --Cart (talk) 16:26, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
- That’s fine, Cart! It’s not urgent at all, I just wanted to ask you. Just come back to the question if you have time and any hints or ideas. All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 17:07, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
- As you are talking about new galleries, I vaguely remeber a discussion about adding one more people category that would be about artists or performers. We talked about how we had Musicians and Singers performing, but nothin similar for dancers or comedians or .. but I can't find that discussion anymore. Do you remember what I am talking about, Aristeas? I believe this dicussion happened in the summer of last year. --Kritzolina (talk) 18:26, 22 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Kritzolina, that’s a good reminder. I remember that discussion, too, but can’t find it at the moment. Well, as far as I can see this could be handled even without creating a new gallery page, for now it would be sufficient to add one or more new subsections to the existing Commons:Featured pictures/People page. That would be an easy task (creating new gallery pages is somewhat difficult because of the many links etc., but creating a new gallery page section is simple), so I can do that at any time if you give me a clear proposal.
- Of course in the longer run it would make sense to split the lengthy Commons:Featured pictures/People page into subpages – that would be more time-consuming, of course, and we need a clear concept for the new pages. Maybe we should have a public discussion about this on the FPC talk page. But because many people seem not very interested in the details of the gallery pages (at least that is my impression ;–), it would be better to develop first one or two clear proposals for how to split the Commons:Featured pictures/People page and then to start the public discussion with these proposals … that could work better. So ideas and proposals for that would be very welcome! Of course it’s not urgent, we can think for a while about this. Until that, I could already create some new subsections on the Commons:Featured pictures/People page because this (as said above) is much easier and IHMO also does not need a broad discussion because it has no impact on the gallery page system. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 09:47, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

New gallery - Part 2
Hi Aristeras, I've had a look and it seems like it would be a good idea to give the rail vehicles a gallery of its own. I usually cropped off/created new pages when some identifiable subject became too dominant on a page, or when the page became too long and had problems uploading. We have to consider that many users don't have big superfast computers. Having discussions about how to manage the galleries, is not constructive. People don't care about it as long as it works, you don't make any outrageous alterations and you are open to suggestions for new sections or pages. I tried several times to ask what was wanted, and the response was mostly shoulder shrugs. We trust you to make the right decisions. :-)
Btw, putting images of trains in sections for say landscapes or bridges, is a very bad idea. I've learned that train aficionados are a bit particular and they don't like their photos scattered. Instead, if you make a gallery page for trains, you might consider sub-sections like "Trains on bridges", "Trains in snow" and "Closeups". You take a look at the page and see what settings for trains that are most popular. Don't overthink it, just look at what's at hand and take it from there. Here is a suggestion for a page structure.
- Rail vehicles (main title)
- Closeups and artistic
- Full trains
- Single units
- Trains on bridges
- Trains in snow
- Other rail vehicles
Wrt the People gallery, the bulkiest section that would be good to split off is the "People at work". Getting that one on a separate page would free up space for other new smaller sections like the ones mentioned by Kritzolina. Actually, if you create a "People at work" gallery page, the performers, dancers and artists would be better on that page since they are in fact doing their jobs. Here is a proposal for page structure. Again, don't overthink, just look at what jobs stands out as bulky, new sub-sections can be added later.
- People at work (main title)
- Actors
- Agricultural workers
- Arts & Crafts
- Artists
- Dancers
- Health care
- Manual labor (or simply Workers, since the Cat is Category:Workers)
- Military
- Musicians and singers performing
- General (or In general or just Musicians?)
- Guitarists
- Singers
- Scientists
- Vendors
- Others
Also keep in mind that creating such new sections will result in a major re-shuffling of the existing sections as they can now be placed in better ones. The section for a photo is also based on what is most prominent in the photo. A photo of someone plying a guitar should be placed in a "Guitarists" section even if (s)he is mostly known as a singer. Go with what's in front of you.
This would free up the "People" page to be mostly about 'People by posture'. 'Event' and 'Other'. I would also add a 'Cyclists' to that page; there are enough of such photos for a special section. A bit like when I created the "Tower Bridge" and "Golden Gate" sections simply because of the many photos of them.
Ok, this is the suggestions I have for now. I can help with the re-sorting if like, I don't mind that, I find such work relaxing. --Cart (talk) 14:43, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Cart, thank you very much for your hints and for the detailed write-up! Your concepts for both new pages are convincing and I will implement them more or less exactly that way. I will start with the trains page (which is the simpler one). I will probably find time for that in the next days.
- Thank you also very much for your offer to help! Well, we could either proceed the way that I do the sorting and you take a look at the results. Or (but only if you want!) we could split the job – you could take one of the two new pages and I would take the other one, and when we are done we could each have a look at the results of the other one ... (two pairs of eyes always see more than a single pair of them ;–). Would that be a good idea? Just tell me what you prefer, I am fine with both ways to proceed.
- If we split the job, we should just do the changes of the {{Commons FP galleries}} template at once, because that template is now a translated one and we need to ask the translation administrators to trigger the updating of the unit markers.
- Again, thank you very much and all the best! --Aristeas (talk) 16:18, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- Since I have the option, and you don't seem to mind, I think it's best if you start with all of it, and I check on it later. Having two people working on the same page can make for edit conflicts and general mess. I offered because that is usually the part that deters other people since they find it boring. ;-) I don't think you should feel rushed by translation updates. They are done all the time, and most editors are used to the English pages. Glad you liked my suggestions, happy to make them. Take your time now and I check in on the progress later. Thank you for keeping the gallery looking nice! --Cart (talk) 16:34, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Cart, that’s fine, we will do it that way. I will start with the new “Rail vehicles” page in the next days and ping you once I think it’s mature enough for your double-checking. Thank you again for all your help! --Aristeas (talk) 16:49, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Cart, just as a short update: I have postponed this task for a week or so because I have got another job (see below – assembling some photography tips and tricks for the German Wiki Loves Earth edition) which is a bit more urgent (should be ready at least for the WLE start). Not to mention my daily routine of pushing Wiki Loves Folklore contributions at least into the most basic correct categories … ;–) Best, --Aristeas (talk) 13:38, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
Fototipps
--A.Savin 15:59, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
--A.Savin 15:59, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

- Some older Web browsers will stop being able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis from this week. This mainly affects users of Internet Explorer 11. If you have an old web browser on your computer you can try to upgrade to a newer version. [44]
- The deprecated
jquery.hoverIntent
module has been removed. This module could be used by gadgets and user scripts, to create an artificial delay in how JavaScript responds to a hover event. Gadgets and user scripts should now use jQueryhover()
oron()
instead. Examples can be found in the migration guide. [45] - Some of the links in Special:SpecialPages will be re-arranged. There will be a clearer separation between links that relate to all users, and links related to your own user account. [46]
- You will be able to hide the Reply button in archived discussion pages with a new
__ARCHIVEDTALK__
magic word. There will also be a new.mw-archivedtalk
CSS class for hiding the Reply button in individual sections on a page. [47][48][49]
Future changes
- The Vega software that creates data visualizations in pages, such as graphs, will be upgraded to the newest version in the future. Graphs that still use the very old version 1.5 syntax may stop working properly. Most existing uses have been found and updated, but you can help to check, and to update any local documentation. Examples of how to find and fix these graphs are available.

Wiki Loves Earth 2023 - Deutschland
Hallo Aristeas,

Hej,
(For information in English, see Wiki Loves Earth 2023 in Sweden or other participating countries.)
/Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 12:46, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Tech News: 2023-19
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Last week, Community Tech released the first update for providing better diffs, the #1 request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. This update adds legends and tooltips to inline diffs so that users unfamiliar with the blue and yellow highlights can better understand the type of edits made.
- When you close an image that is displayed via MediaViewer, it will now return to the wiki page instead of going back in your browser history. This feature request was voted #65 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [72]
- The SyntaxHighlight extension now supports
wikitext
as a selected language. Old alternatives that were used to highlight wikitext, such ashtml5
,moin
, andhtml+handlebars
, can now be replaced. [73] - Preloading text to new pages/sections now supports preloading from localized MediaWiki interface messages. Here is an example at the Czech Wikipedia that uses
preload=MediaWiki:July
. [74]
Problems
- Graph Extension update: Foundation developers have completed upgrading the visualization software to Vega5. Existing community graphs based on Vega2 are no longer compatible. Communities need to update local graphs and templates, and shared lua modules like de:Modul:Graph. The Vega Porting guide provides the most comprehensive detail on migration from Vega2 and here is an example migration. Vega5 has currently just been enabled on mediawiki.org to provide a test environment for communities. [75]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 May. It will be on all wikis from 11 May (calendar).
- Until now, all new OAuth apps went through manual review. Starting this week, apps using identification-only or basic authorizations will not require review. [76]
Future changes
- During the next year, MediaWiki will stop using IP addresses to identify logged-out users, and will start automatically assigning unique temporary usernames. Read more at IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation/Updates. You can join the discussion about the format of the temporary usernames. [77]
- There will be an A/B test on 10 Wikipedias where the Vector 2022 skin is the default skin. Half of logged-in desktop users will see an interface where the different parts of the page are more clearly separated. You can read more. [78][79]
-
jquery.tipsy
will be removed from the MediaWiki core. This will affect some user scripts. Many lines with.tipsy(
can be commented out.OO.ui.PopupWidget
can be used to keep things working like they are now. You can read more and read about how to find broken scripts. [80]

This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to more Wikipedias. The communities can configure how this feature works locally. [82]
Future changes
- There is a recently formed team at the Wikimedia Foundation which will be focusing on experimenting with new tools. Currently they are building a prototype ChatGPT plugin that allows information generated by ChatGPT to be properly attributed to the Wikimedia projects.
- Gadget and userscript developers should replace
jquery.cookie
withmediawiki.cookie
. Thejquery.cookie
library will be removed in ~1 month, and staff developers will run a script to replace any remaining uses at that time. [83]

- Citations can once again be added automatically from ISBNs, thanks to Zotero's ISBN searches. The current data sources are the Library of Congress (United States), the Bibliothèque nationale de France (French National Library), and K10plus ISBN (German repository). Additional data source searches can be proposed to Zotero. The ISBN labels in the VisualEditor Automatic tab will reappear later this week. [86]
- The page Special:EditWatchlist now has "Check all" options to select all the pages within a namespace. This feature request was voted #161 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [87]
Problems
- For a few days earlier this month, the "Add interlanguage link" item in the Tools menu did not work properly. This has now been fixed. [88]

Recent changes
- The content attribution tools Who Wrote That?, XTools Authorship, and XTools Blame now support the Dutch, German, Hungarian, Indonesian, Japanese, Polish and Portuguese Wikipedias. This was the #7 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [94]
- The Search Preview panel has been deployed on four Wikipedias (Catalan, Dutch, Hungarian and Norwegian). The panel will show an image related to the article (if existing), the top sections of the article, related images (coming from MediaSearch on Commons), and eventually the sister projects associated with the article. [95]
- The RealMe extension now allows administrators to verify URLs for any page, for Mastodon and similar software. [96]
- The default project license has been officially upgraded to CC BY-SA 4.0. The software interface messages have been updated. Communities should feel free to start updating any mentions of the old CC BY-SA 3.0 licensing within policies and related documentation pages. [97]
Problems
- For three days last month, some Wikipedia pages edited with VisualEditor or DiscussionTools had an unintended
__TOC__
(or its localized form) added during an edit. There is a listing of affected pages sorted by wiki, that may still need to be fixed. [98] - Currently, the "Sort this page by default as" feature in VisualEditor is broken. Existing
{{DEFAULTSORT:...}}
keywords incorrectly appear as missing templates in VisualEditor. Developers are exploring how to fix this. In the meantime, those wishing to edit the default sortkey of a page are advised to switch to source editing. [99] - Last week, an update to the delete form may have broken some gadgets or user scripts. If you need to manipulate (empty) the reason field, replace
#wpReason
with#wpReason > input
. See an example fix. [100]
Changes later this week

The change should have no noticeable effect on users, but if you experience any slow loading or other strangeness when using VisualEditor, please report it on the phabricator ticket linked here. Future changes
- From 5 June to 17 July, the Foundation's Security team is holding a consultation with contributors regarding a draft policy to govern the use of third-party resources in volunteer-developed gadgets and scripts. - The Minerva skin now applies more predefined styles to the

[109][110] - Gadgets will now load on both desktop and mobile by default. Previously, gadgets loaded only on desktop by default. Changing this default using the

Popular gadgets that create errors on mobile will be disabled by developers on the Minerva skin as a temporary solution. [111] - All namespace tabs now have the same browser access key by default. Previously, custom and extension-defined namespaces would have to have their access keys set manually on-wiki, but that is no longer necessary. [112]
- The review form of the Flagged Revisions extension now uses the standardized user interface components. [113]
Future changes
- How media is structured in the parser's HTML output will change in the coming weeks at group2 wikis. This change improves the accessibility of content. You may need to update your site-CSS, or userscripts and gadgets. There are details on what code to check, how to update the code, and where to report any related problems. [114]

Thank you...
... for fixing the broken nomination link of this image! My bad, I assume it got broken when I corrected a typo on the file name? Now I know how to fix it next time :) --Julesvernex2 (talk) 07:38, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
- You are welcome, Julesvernex2! On the description page of every featured picture, the {{Assessments}} template links to the nomination page for that picture. The template automatically generates that link on the base of the filename. However, when we rename the picture, that does not work anymore. Then we have to add the parameter
com-nom=...
to the template, it’s value should be the original name of the picture (without theFile:
prefix). Most people, including some administrators, do not know that and happily rename featured pictures without checking the {{Assessments}} template ;–). From time to time, I search for such cases and repair them, but of course it would be great if more people would just check the {{Assessments}} template whenever they rename featured pictures. :–) All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 08:08, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Section-level Image Suggestions feature has been deployed on seven Wikipedias (Portuguese, Russian, Indonesian, Catalan, Hungarian, Finnish and Norwegian Bokmål). The feature recommends images for articles on contributors' watchlists that are a good match for individual sections of those articles.
- Global abuse filters have been enabled on all Wikimedia projects, except English and Japanese Wikipedias (who opted out). This change was made following a global request for comments. [117]
- Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool for administrators to help fight spam. It provides a clearer interface for blocking plain domains (and their subdomains), is more easily searchable, and is faster for the software to process for each edit on the wiki. It does not support regex (for complex cases), nor URL path-matching, nor the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist, but otherwise it replaces most of the functionalities of the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. There is a Python script to help migrate all simple domains into this tool, and more feature details, within the tool's documentation. It is available at all wikis except for Meta-wiki, Commons, and Wikidata. [118]
- The WikiEditor extension was updated. It includes some of the most frequently used features of wikitext editing. In the past, many of its messages could only be translated by administrators, but now all regular translators on translatewiki can translate them. Please check the state of WikiEditor localization into your language, and if the "Completion" for your language shows anything less than 100%, please complete the translation. See a more detailed explanation.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 July. It will be on all wikis from 13 July (calendar).
- The default protocol of Special:LinkSearch and API counterparts has changed from http to both http and https. [119]
- Special:LinkSearch and its API counterparts will now search for all of the URL provided in the query. It used to be only the first 60 characters. This feature was requested fifteen years ago. [120]
Future changes
- There is an experiment with a ChatGPT plugin. This is to show users where the information is coming from when they read information from Wikipedia. It has been tested by Wikimedia Foundation staff and other Wikimedians. Soon all ChatGPT plugin users can use the Wikipedia plugin. This is the same plugin which was mentioned in Tech News 2023/20. [121]
- There is an ongoing discussion on a proposed Third-party resources policy. The proposal will impact the use of third-party resources in gadgets and userscripts. Based on the ideas received so far, policy includes some of the risks related to user scripts and gadgets loading third-party resources, some best practices and exemption requirements such as code transparency and inspectability. Your feedback and suggestions are warmly welcome until July 17, 2023 on on the policy talk page.

Recent changes
- We are now serving 1% of all global user traffic from Kubernetes (you can read more technical details). We are planning to increment this percentage regularly. You can follow the progress of this work.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 July. It will be on all wikis from 20 July (calendar).
- MediaWiki system messages will now look for available local fallbacks, instead of always using the default fallback defined by software. This means wikis no longer need to override each language on the fallback chain separately. For example, English Wikipedia doesn't have to create
en-ca
anden-gb
subpages with a transclusion of the base pages anymore. This makes it easier to maintain local overrides. [122] - The
action=growthsetmentorstatus
API will be deprecated with the new MediaWiki version. Bots or scripts calling that API should use theaction=growthmanagementorlist
API now. [123]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2023 - Deutschland
Hallo Aristeas,

- ORES, the revision evaluation service, is now using a new open-source infrastructure on all wikis except for English Wikipedia and Wikidata. These two will follow this week. If you notice any unusual results from the Recent Changes filters that are related to ORES (for example, "Contribution quality predictions" and "User intent predictions"), please report them. [155]

- The Technical Decision-Making Forum Retrospective team invites anyone involved in the technical field of Wikimedia projects to signup to and join one of their listening sessions on 13 September. Another date will be scheduled later. The goal is to improve the technical decision-making processes.
- As part of the changes for the Better diff handling of paragraph splits wishlist proposal, the inline switch widget in diff pages is being rolled out this week to all wikis. The inline switch will allow viewers to toggle between a unified inline or two-column diff wikitext format. [157]
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 20 September. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [158]
- The Enterprise API is launching a new feature called "breaking news". FP nominations
Hi Aristeas,
Many of your uploads have FP potential.
Just 5 examples (to give a few) that would be promoted with no doubt in my opinion:
- File:Neckarsulm - Scheuerberg - Ansicht von Westen im Oktober (2).jpg
- File:Beilstein - Billensbach - Stocksberger Str. 14 - Werkstatt - Fenster mit Hopfenranken (1).jpg
- File:Rottenburg a.N. - Wurmlingen - Kapellenberg - Ansicht von OSO im April mit Gegenlicht.jpg
- File:Schwaigern - Massenbach - Baumgruppe am Wilhelmstaler Bach bei Sonnenuntergang.jpg
- File:Tübingen - Altstadt - Neckarfront - Ansicht von Neckarinsel in blauer Stunde (1).jpg
I also realize that many of them are not even nominated at QIC. That's a good way to give visibility to your works (for other nominators, non photographers) sometimes.
I started nominating some, but then realize that if a dust spot, CA, or anything is noticed by someone, then it will give work to me AND /OR to you. Thus I abstain because I'm already busy.
But I strongly encourage you to nominate more of your images. It seems you have time to edit other's images, that's generous, but why not spending this time with your own stuff for more efficiency?
I wish you a good day! -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:23, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Basile Morin,
- thank you very much for your kind message (and sorry for the late answer – I wanted to handle the less pleasant duties first)! I am glad that you like many of my uploads, and I’m honoured by your confidence in them. So I should certainly try it once with them.
- All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 19:51, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

This is because the developers are upgrading to a new version of the library. They will then use a script to fix the existing categories. This will take a few hours or a few days depending on how big the wiki is. You can read more. [173][174]

Good evening Aristeas,
If I may, just a question. My set of mushrooms promoted at FP: Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/Ruitjesbovist (Calvatia utriformis). 07/18/2023. (d.j.b) 03.jpg Not listed among the gems on the main page. Or is that not common with a set? Yours sincerely,--Famberhorst (talk) 17:41, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Famberhorst, I will look into this today. I will answer you. Have a nice day, --Aristeas (talk) 09:30, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Hi Famberhorst and Aristeas! I know from experience that there is something strange going on with the code only(!) at the 'Fungi' section of that page. This is making the FPCBot sometimes miss adding new FPs to that section. I've been trying for a year or so to figure out what is wrong, but so far no luck. The two new FPs are now added manually ([180]). Perhaps Aristeas can figure out what the problem is, some day...
- While I was there, I also saw that another user had just added a non-FP to that section. Now reverted and the user notified. Best --Cart (talk) 14:40, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Cart, thank you so much for taking care of this! I have been held up by other duties. Now I wanted to look into this, finally, but it’s great that you have already resolved the issue. Yes, the mysterious question why the bot does not update that section … I remember that some months ago I already investigated a bit into that, but I found no trace of an answer. But sooner or later I must dig deeper to find, hopefully, a fix for this. Until that we are thrown back on manual fixes. Thank you again and all the best, also for removing the fake FP! --Aristeas (talk) 15:38, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- I know that 'Fungi' was once part of the 'Plants' section, and I think the trouble started when it was made into a new section of its own. Not sure if this can give you any leads, but I thought I would mention it. With all the tranclusions and translation templates on that page, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. ;-( --Cart (talk) 15:46, 14 November 2023 (UTC) --Cart (talk) 15:46, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, very probably the bug must be related to that origin of the section. That’s an important starting point, thank you! And the translations make things much more complicated, alas … --Aristeas (talk) 15:57, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Good evening W.carter and Aristeas, Thank you very much for your efforts. It has been resolved nicely again. Kind regards from and turbulent Friesland,--Famberhorst (talk) 16:16, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Good news
Just came by to tell you that while I added the new gallery pages to the Commons:Featured pictures, list, I noticed that some things were "off" with the coding. Fixing that, it looks like I solved the trouble with the 'Fungi' section. I guess after all the coding lately, I was in the right mood and more recepive to very minor glitches. Fingers crossed it works now! --Cart (talk) 22:45, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Cart, these are really great news! Thank you very much! So after all it was not a special bug in FPCBot, but just some hidden error in the (very special and complicated) coding of that page. Do you happen to know which change exactly did the trick, I guess this one? I just ask in order to understand better what kind of coding errors caused the bot’s misbehaviour ... in order to know better (in the future) what to look for if this problems reappears. Thank you again and all the best, --Aristeas (talk) 15:46, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yep, that edit did the trick. I saw that the bug happened because of a compilated series of wonky edits by several users over time (me included). I tried several ways to fix it, but trying to undo past not-so-good-edits only made things worse. This seemed to be the best way to solve the problem.
- Keeping those numbers correct and corresponding with each other is the way to keep that pager running. I actually got the clue for this while I got in trouble with the translate tags, and was helped, at the gallery template. So that mess helped solve this bug. :-)
- Right now I'm working on sorting out black and white photos. Now that the B&W gallery is back as a working photo technique, it needs to be cleaned up, sorted and integrated into the normal gallery system. I will be working on this the rest of the day now. --Cart (talk) 15:58, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Very good, Cart. OK, so we must remember to double-check these numbers on any changes. It’s difficult, but at least it’s an understandable reason. Thank you very much also for taking care of the B&W gallery! Yes, if we keep them (and now we have finally good reasons to kepp it) we must maintain it, also in the long run. I will try to remember to have an eye especially on the B&W and the other new “technique” gallery pages. --Aristeas (talk) 16:14, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- An important question, Cart. Do we continue to handle the B&W as a “secondary” gallery, i.e. that any FP which is listed on that page should be also listed on a topical gallery page? Or do we abandon this and apply our “No duplicates” rule also to the B&W gallery page, meaning that if a photo is listed there, it must not be listed on any other FP gallery page? Right now we have a mix – e.g. File:Windows of the Frost Building (Toronto, Canada) in monochrome.jpg is listed on three gallery pages, but your File:Nine steps stair in Lysekil - bw.jpg is listed only on the B&W gallery page, not in the Architectural elements#Stairs gallery. I am fine with both approaches, but we should settle for one of them. This is also important in order to keep my fpgallerist' program up to date – it needs to know if photos listed on the B&W gallery page are allowed to or even must (as previously) appear also on a topical gallery page. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 16:21, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- I'm working on getting it re-made as a normal primary gallery, with no duplicates. I have just started to sort things, so there are still a lot of doubles out there and things look a bit messy right now. I hope this will clear up by tomorrow if I work hard. You did the check right in the middle of my work. :-) Having the B&Ws getting a "special treatment" is not in line with the usual policies on the galleries. When it comes down to it, B&W is just another way of taking photos, just like ICM or Filters. So, sorry, but you will have to update your program. Hopefully things will look clearer tomorrow. There are a lot of files to sort through. --Cart (talk) 16:36, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Cart, don’t hurry, I absolutely did not want to put pressure on you – I just wanted to discuss the question! Take any time you want. Updating my program is no problem. On the contrary, I can even simplify the code now because the B&W gallery is no longer an exception which needs special treatment! So I am really happy about this change. All the best, --Aristeas (talk) 17:05, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- You both are amazing and wonderful people! Thanks for all the work you do to keep the pictures of others shining! Aristeas, you've got mail, all is well. Kritzolina (talk) 18:20, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

Like always when you set out to fix something on Commons, you step into unforeseen messes and the the whole thing ends up taking much, much more time than you thought. This time it's all those restored old black and white photos. They are scattered all over the place! Tracking them down and sorting them is taking forever. They are really clogging what I thought would be a smooth and easy way to give the B&W it's place. Anyway, a new gallery page had to be created, Commons:Featured pictures/Historical/People, and some instruction and info set up on other pages. I have added it to the FP list and the template, but the transclusion to the rest of the pages is a bit slow right now, so I isn't visible there yet. I also had to fix some new top links for croos-gallery navigating, and I improved the code on some of the to work better with multi platform interfaces. Back to work! --Cart (talk) 09:45, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- I am doing some sorting, I hope I am doing it correctly. If not, please let me know! Kritzolina (talk) 10:46, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Kritzolina, thank you for your help. It is almost right. You have to include the year on every image as well, like this
'''1855'''<br />
, and be sure to place them in chronological order within the sections too. Could you please fix that for the photos you have already sorted? The work is unfortunately very tedious... ;-) --Cart (talk) 12:37, 22 November 2023 (UTC)- I will, thanks for letting me know Kritzolina (talk) 13:00, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- As an afterthought - have you any advice on how to deal with those pictures that are only loosly dated? Like 1885 or 1886, or between 1860 and 1865. This was easy, when just sorting them into a span of years, but for sorting chronologically, this is an issue. Kritzolina (talk) 13:49, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Kritzolina Yep, I had the same problem, so I looked at how it has been done earlier on the usual 'History' gallery. You sort the image by the first year and place it after those with just a single year. Like this: 1885, 1885, 1885, 1885 or 1886, 1885-95, 1886, 1886, 1886 or 1888. --Cart (talk) 14:16, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, working on it ... but need to do some other things as well in RL, so I will take a break and continue later. Kritzolina (talk) 14:21, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Understandable. I can relate. ;-) -- Cart (talk) 14:32, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you
Dear fellow Commons photographer,
I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.
At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.
All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Frank, thank you very much for your message and nice words. And even more thank you for your great commitment to Wikimedia Commons and photography in general! You have done invaluable work for the Commons Photographers User Group – organized events, meetings, written all the invitations, etc. So I want to say you a big Thank you! All the best, Roman / --Aristeas (talk) 16:02, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
- Vielen herzlichen Dank, Roman!

:) 🐈 --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 19:11, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

🌟 Happy Holidays, Aristeas! 🌟 | ||
The turn of the year is approaching and with it the time for reflection. Let's take a moment and reflect a little.
