As a member of the Wikipedia Typo Team, I end up finding links to a lot of misspelled image files during my periodic sweeps. So far I've requested over 200 justified renames, all to fix spelling errors. It would save time if I could just complete the moves myself. I realize I don't have 1,000 edits on Commons, but I did just hit 70,000 on Wikipedia, if that counts for anything. Thank you. Nick Number (talk) 21:06, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I edit many file pages in the arts, including new uploads from the Google Art Project, and it would be useful to correct errors in filenames (typos, inconsistencies among new files) rather than leaving a template for someone else to do it. I have read the policy page. I have added the rename template to files with no "move denials" from others. Thank you. Boo-Boo Baroo (talk) 17:33, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Saluts. I know I have only 500 edits on Commons and this would become a shortcoming, but I'd like to request this right (which I already hold on en-wiki since June 2012) because I understand the renaming guideline and I have encountered an amazing quantity of files under my area of work here (venezuelan topics) that need to be renamed. I have been using the rename request method for some time now, and almost all my requests have been accepted and performed. Thank you. — ΛΧΣ21 21:09, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The filemover right would be useful to fix my own uploads, or fix those of an OTRS customer. I have OTRS permissions access and over 1050 edits here on Commons, and hold sysop at en.wikipedia, wikidata, and en.wikivoyage. My virtually only concern are BSicons, and I've made 110+ renaming requests during the last two months. Stemming from the discussions at Talk:BSicon/Colors, a far greater number of files will have to be moved shortly (mostly falling under criterion 6), which would disrupt templates across several Wikipedias unless performed cohesively. I've used Template:Rename to request the renaming files in the past, and I'm familiar with Commons:File_renaming. I'm a Commons contributor in good standing, and I've been entrusted with the "autopatrol" bit. I haven't been the center of any major issue for several months, and I don't want to cause any issues. The disputes that I was involved in the past didn't involve renaming files. I would like to start by fixing a bunch of misspellings (Completed by Fæ). I would like to help out with Category:Media_requiring_renaming. Disclosure: I was banned from enwiki last summer, but I hope to return to enwiki as a positive contributor with ArbCom's approval this upcoming summer. I don't believe that my ban from enwiki will substantially impair my ability to rename files, just as Russavia's ban from enwiki didn't significantly impair his ability to be a sysop here. Thank you in advance for your consideration. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 14:32, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As you will have realized to, this was in a longtime activity my first and only conflict with a user. I am quite sure that i dont suit as an advocat of third parties and concentrate on my own business. --maxxl2 - talk 20:53, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"I am quite sure that i dont suit as an advocat of third parties and concentrate on my own business." - is again a personal attack on me - you're presuming me to be an advocate of Fry1989 and not concentrating on my business. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 05:29, 14 March 2013 (UTC).[reply]
As in the first instance there is a severe problem of language. I didnt intend to attack Fry but it was understood as an attack because i had to write my questions in English to be understood. Now you are understanding my words as to refer to your actions in this case. My real reference was to me advocating Katepanomegas rights. Again: I am not interested in personal rows but hope to help and improve commons even with my limited lingual capacities. maxxl2 - talk 07:38, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

1. I doubt whether this case represents "a severe problem of language".

2. Also, how "I am quite sure that i dont suit as an advocat of third parties and concentrate on my own business" statement relates not to a personal attack on Hindustanilanguage but on you "advocating Katepanomegas rights" is something which you ought to explain. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.115.142.82 (talk • contribs) 06:31, 15 March 2013‎ (UTC)[reply]

Well, it seems to have been about an hour and a bit and already he is back to having an outright brawl with another user. I can't see any bright future for an editor with such a demonstrated lack of self-control as continues his name-calling. Penyulap 20:15, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I didnt start the brawl. But if it is a requirement for beeing a filemover to stand accusations like "you are a liar and vandal" without reaction, this is a sad and dark future and not a lack of self-control but self-defence if noone else intervenes. I kept quiet for weeks and withstand several instances before. But today it is enough. With a good portion of assertiveness at an age of 70 i dont accept these name-callings anymore. --maxxl2 - talk 20:31, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm doubtful you'll be the one mature enough to stop it, and when you're getting in your fair share dishing it up, claiming you don't accept it seems rather dubious. Penyulap 20:45, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I come across files with badly chosen stub filenames now and then or find groups of files which could need file name harmonization. However it's cumbersome to fill in the {{rename}} template every time, explain why and how the renaming is favorable in the current context and finally wait for someone to do the actual renaming. Especially if the file is used on one or two other pages it's very time-intensive to request renaming, wait for the renaming to be done and replace the files afterwards, instead of just being able to directly move the file and replace it on all pages immediately. Hi, I need the filemover rights specifically for renaming files with Romanian toponimics and words that contain ş and ţ diacritics. This kind of diacritics does not comply to Romanian Wikipedia diacritic standards that recommend using ș and ț respectively in articles. As a consequence of those recommendations, virtually every ş and ţ on rowiki pages are replaced by ș and ț, and this includes files inclusions. Now to be able to view, say, ro:File:Bucureşti - Constanţa.JPG in article ro:Magistrala CFR 800, a redirect ro:File:București - Constanța.JPG was created. My intention is to have the more the better images named with correct diacritics so that no redirect managing would be necessary. Besides that, I had proposed a couple of dozens of commons files for renaming and I recall all of my requests being approved. I have about 3500 edits, most of which have been done in the last few months in sorting trams. During this time I've noticed many files with generic (tram in foo.jpg) or meaningless names, which I have started nominating for rename. The first few had their proposed names modified by User:Billinghurst but were otherwise accepted, I feel that I have a good grasp of COM:RENAME, and could usefully use the tool to both reduced the workload through not making requests, and help keeping a low number of files in Category:Media requiring renaming. (Please note that in my recent contribution a number of file suggestions come up as redlinks, I changed my requested names, not the filemover.) Thank you for your consideration. Per voy:Wikivoyage_talk:Banner_Expedition#Paintings.2FPrints, a lot of Wikivoyage banners have been uploaded here with bad filenames. We're planning to fix that, but that would require coordinated moves and renames on both wikis. I have quite a bit of experience here, and am an admin over there, so would like to assist in this file-moving project and the backlog of requested file moves on Commons. Hi! While my edit count doesn't reflect 1,000 edits yet, this will change rather quickly. As an OTRS agent, I review images and work with uploaders to identify and verify the copyright holder, assist the copyright holder in selecting the allowable license under which they desire to release their images, identify and resolve outstanding issues, create categories and sort files, and update files to reflect attribution, licensing, and authorization for use in accordance with policy. Uploaded images may need to be renamed following a request made by the uploader, to correct identification errors made during uploading, and/or in order to meet our file naming guidelines. Streamlining the process would minimize the likelihood of any broken global inbound links from local projects, if files are renamed sooner, rather than later. While I am certainly willing to wait until the threshold of 1,000 edits is met, it would improve the work flow to be able to rename images when updating files to reflect verified authorization for use. In essence, the ability move files on Commons would reflect an effective use of time and improved customer service with the global Wikipedia community, including uploaders, copyright holders, editing colleagues, readers, and individuals reusing content made available through an allowable license. I dont quite yet have 1,000 edits, but I am sure I will get there soon, I do a fair bit of work creating shields for the Australian Roads Wikiproject on en.wiki (as well as uploading photographs). I will happily, if granted File mover permission, perform file moves for others aswell (in line with Commons:File renaming). At en.wiki, I have >5000 edits, reviewer and rollbacker permissions, and have never had any disciplinary action taken against me. Links to my rename requests are below. I've only got just shy of 600 edits to my name, but I have been around since 2007. In that time I've uploaded self-made photographs specifically taken for Commons and historic public domain images, retouched images that were already on Commons, categorized files, filed and participated in DRs, and made a dozen or so renaming requests, which were granted.

Hi. I have not made any renaming requests so far on Commons, though I've certainly encountered files with inappropriate file names (mostly when looking through Flickr transfers). Why haven't I requested a rename? I guess because I'm the kind of person who feels bad about asking others to do something that I feel perfectly capable of doing myself. I know the kinds of backlogs that happen here, most of them seeming more important than fixing a file name. True, a bad filename makes an otherwise good picture less usable, so it is an important task, but not one I generally want to waste someone else's time dealing with.

I see this right as being most helpful when transferring or reviewing recently transferred files (e.g., from Flickr). Sometimes files are uploaded to Flickr with less than useful names ("My other glass.JPG" when "Frosted cocktail glass with dimples.jpg" might be a far more appropriate name). Or, a series of photos each has a different, unrelated name ("Big Boom.jpg", "Wasn't this one fun.jpg", and "Nearly hit Jeff with this one.jpg", instead of "Backyard fireworks show - Gold Fountain.jpg", "Backyard fireworks show - Multicolor pinwheel.jpg", and "Backyard fireworks show - Bottle rocket.jpg"). Obviously, if I am transferring these, I will try to name them well from the start, but sometimes I don't realize there's a series until after I've started, and then it would be nice to just rename the ones already in place. And I really dislike asking other people to spend their time fixing problems I created.

Even though I've not made many renaming requests, I am an experienced contributor. I have been a Wikimedian since 2007. Across all the WMF projects, I have made well over 7,000 edits. I am:

  • a Reviewer, Image Reviewer, and Rollbacker here on Commons (verify), where I have uploaded/transferred over 100 images (over 71 of which were my riginal creations),
  • a Reviewer, Rollbacker, and Autopatrolled on en.wiki (verify),
  • and a Reviewer on en.books (verify).

In addition, I have installed around 10 MediaWiki wikis on corporate intranets and public Websites, and I currently maintain three of them. I use the rename feature on those wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Willscrlt ( Talk | w:en | b:en | meta ) 03:00, 20 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've been going through a lot of old files that were uploaded with alphanumeric codenames, and filemover would make it easier to get them properly named with descriptive filenames. I'm an admin on en.wiki, and while I have no desire to mop here, this would be a good way to help contribute. I believe I have a good understanding of the rename procedures and follow them carefully. Now I've uploaded a lot of images and some of them needs renaming. I think it's better to rename the images by myself then via an administrator. Additionaly many images will follow (with respect to my internet connection). I've made more than 4.000 edits too. Thank you. XRay talk 16:34, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would love to be a "file mover". I have uploaded images before, made some mistakes, and requested corrections. More importantly, I uploaded my own work recently and made no mistakes there, just to be sure. Thank you. George Ho (talk) 09:29, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As I need to rename my own files as well as some other that require renaming, it would be easier and less time consuming to have this funcionality. Vert (talk) 13:56, 27 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Could you please give a reason why you need filemover privileges? -- King of 23:02, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not done Not experienced enough: this, this, ... + i don't see any rename requests in your history. Please use Template:rename for now. --Steinsplitter (talk) 17:08, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am fulfilling the first requirement - I have made between 1,000 and 1,500 useful non-botlike edits, besides I have made several renaming requests, please add proper link to support your claims Vert (talk) 18:22, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is not a requirement but a rough guideline. --Steinsplitter (talk) 19:01, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Therefore I am fulfiling rough guidelines. I completely don't understand what my talk page has to do with it. Can someone competent verify? Vert (talk) 20:51, 29 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I spend a lot of time cleaning up artwork image files, converting them to use proper templates and licenses, adding data, as well as categorization; and I frequently find images that are incorrectly named. I have nearly 6000 edits across all projects, and I was awarded autopatroller status without requesting it. Thank you. Laura1822 (talk) 20:21, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Non-English names? Example pleas. --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:55, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

COM:RENAME "Files should NOT be renamed only because the filename is not English and/or is not correctly capitalized (Remember, Commons is a multilingual project, so there's no reason to favor English over other languages)." --Steinsplitter (talk) 17:54, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As I see the example there, it is still in English alphabet nevertheless it is in another language which many people can not even read. Especially, right to left alphabet files mix up disassembles pages that they are put in. I am not going to mass moving files but I was going to change rare files that all of similar files have an English alphabet names and not raising any objection. Plus, I meant Persian named files and in Persian Wikipedia almost wikipedians upload files in English and there are very few old files written in Persian alphabet. Anyway, if you tell me don't move even such cases I will not move them and will move only files that their names are not enough descriptive or wrong spelled. Monfie (talk) 18:39, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done I've given you the filemover right, but you shouldn't rename files that are in other languages without first discussing the reasoning behind such moves at COM:AN or COM:VP, and seeing if there's support for doing such moves. For now, you should stick closely to the rename guidelines. INeverCry 18:51, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I upload many old book pages and sometimes I make a few errors in naming of files. Now I have to request a filemover for these cases, that's annoying. Thank you. IusticiaBY (talk) 18:24, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading files means making a mistake now and then. I'd love to be able to correct my own mistakes, which make a majority of my rename requests so far, without making others repair them instead. I could also help the less experienced Wikipedians who sometimes ask me for help in other areas. Thank you. cheva (talk) 14:47, 28 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done; please give our renaming guidelines a read again, and happy editing! odder (talk) 17:36, 28 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I know that my low edit count (360 edits) means that this will require a very good reason, so here goes. 1) I'm an experienced Wikimedian in general, with about 17,000 edits to all projects combined even though my edit count here on Commons is low. 2) I hold filemover rights on the English Wikipedia. 3) Despite my edit count, I have filed over 100 rename requests. 4) Since my last request for this right in August, my accuracy with rename requests has improved greatly. (Edit: I'll also add that the notice at the top of this section says "usually require editors to have made between 1,000 and 1,500 useful non-botlike edits or can show a large amount of justified renaming requests at the Commons" [emphasis mine]) I hope that these reasons will be sufficient.
