Hi 777sms, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect reason for file move

[edit]

I see that you moved File:Aerial view of Royal Park Bridge in West Palm Beach FL opened for a boat (2014).jpg to File:Aerial view of Royal Park Bridge in West Palm Beach FL opened for a boat (2014) by Don Ramey Logan.jpg. I am leaving this message to tell you that the user who requested the move, User:WPPilot, gave an incorrect reason for the request. He/she gave criterion number 1, "original uploader's request", but I am the original uploader, and I did not make this request. I also do not support it. It is preferable to avoid including photographer names in file names on Commons. (You may reply here, on your talk page.) Steve Morgan (talk) 12:40, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry. Removed.[1] 777sms (talk) 15:58, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I object to his reply. I AM the original uploader, this person did nothing other than crop MY photo, then upload it. I use my name on each and every photo I upload to commons. A user can not remove my name from the photo as the result of cropping it.--Don (talk) 17:38, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Original upload: West Palm Beach Aerial November 2014 photo D Ramey Logan.jpg His cropped version that removed my name: Aerial view of Royal Park Bridge in West Palm Beach FL opened for a boat (2014).jpg

User:WPPilot = Don Ramey Logan you're original uploader. CC BY 4.0 Attribution. Done.[2]777sms (talk) 18:02, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! --Don (talk) 18:09, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the inconvenience, 777sms. WPPilot is correct, and I acted too hastily, completely forgetting that this was just a cropping of an existing Commons file – and not a file I found and uploaded from Flickr, which has been the case for 99% of the many drawbridge photos I have uploaded to Commons that were not taken by me. It was careless of me not to review the file page more carefully before leaving you the message, and I apologize. Steve Morgan (talk) 21:59, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Laguna

[edit]

"Laguna" is a word in the Spanish language. The corresponding word in English is "lagoon". The filename "Es-us-laguna.oga" made sense: a pronunciation of "laguna" in Spanish as spoken in the US. The filename "En-us-laguna.ogg" should contain the pronunciation of an English word "laguna" in American English. According to Merriam Webster the pronunciation of this loanword is /ləˈgünə/, not /laˈɡuna/ (the pronunciation in the file). The change you made on Dutch Wiktionary would mean we pretend to show a pronunciation in English for a word in Spanish. Is it possible that your initial conclusion of an "obvious error" did not take into account these facts? Would you be willing to revert the changes you made basedon that conclusion? That would be really helpful. MarcoSwart (talk) 20:57, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Original Barnstar
I went to change the category of File:General Motors TBM-3 Avenger silhouette.jpg after adding the file rename request banner and when I tried use the links at the bottom of the page it took me to the editing interface rather than automatically completing it. I went to check the file history and I realized that it was because you had just renamed the file! Thanks for the quick work, I appreciate it! Noha307 (talk) 01:11, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Moving of File:MOTION TM Vertrriebs GmbH.svg I requested

[edit]

First of all, thanks muchly for that speedy moving – I didn't expected it that soon, so kudos! ♥

Then again I've another request if you're already at work; Can you please delete the redirect from the former misspelled file MOTION TM Vertriebs GmbH.svg? It really isn't necessary, it actually is a spelling-error and thanks to your movement, the file is now correctly named. So the redirect from File:MOTION_TM_Vertrriebs_GmbH.svg with only the correct spelling is not necessary. I didn't see the option for a Request for Deletion, so I hope you don't midn my message here. Again, thank you for your work! Smartcom5 (Any thoughts?) 22:18, 22 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to help. But I'm not an administrator, so I can't delete the redirect. Thanks.777sms (talk) 00:02, 23 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I’m glad I could help. :)777sms (talk) 10:31, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
File:God-Save-The-Queen.ogg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
