The motorway signs in Azerbaijan are green and in that file Azerbaijan needs to be colored in green accordingly.

categories
hi INeverCry
I want to ask you about categories, how can I add it to my pictures? and your help would be greatly appreciated!Osamaalsaadi (talk) 02:21, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Osama. The easiest way is to use the Hotcat tool. To use this, go to "Preferences" - "Gadgets" - "Tools for categories" and click the box next to Hotcat. This tool gives you a little + sign in the category area at the very bottom of image pages. Click the + and a box opens in which you type a category and then click "OK". You can also add categories manually by editing a page and placing a category at the bottom like this: . See Commons:Categories for a detailed explanation of categories and their use. INeverCry 02:33, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi INeverCry!
I am assuming that you only deleted the file because of the 30 day thing rather than OTRS pending not yet responded to. Am I correct or did OTRS respond? --Marshallsumter (talk) 11:28, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
- I deleted it because of the lack of permission. INeverCry 19:13, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Deletion of images
You recently deleted some of my uploaded images citing copyright infringements. The images were tagged stating that the IDF had granted permission for their use under an appropriate licence. This was after I sent a copy of this permission by email and it was registered. (I can send it to you too if you want) Can you explain why they were then deleted? AnkhMorpork (talk) 12:30, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
- The file File:Children under fire.jpg has been restored and re-deleted by another admin (User:Matanya). The file File:Ashkelon.jpg was deleted for having a non-commercial license. Ask Matanya about these, as he's an OTRS member, or ask at the OTRS noticeboard. INeverCry 19:12, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi, you've deleted several images that I've uploaded (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Lasse_Espe) on behalf of comic book artists that I work for (Martin Kellerman, Lina Neidestam, Børge Lund and Nils Axle Kanten). On November 6th I sent permissions for the images in a pdf attachment called Wiki_approvals.pdf, and I was under the impression that everything was OK. So I wonder why the images have been deleted. Can you please inform me, or better yet, make it right if an error has been made?
Do I need to resend the permissions? I never received an answer from permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Regards, Lasse Espe, Strand Comics

Hi Lasse, at least to me, but I am not on OTRS, it looks o.k. Actually, you don't need 1 permission form for each of several works from the same author, you can put them together into 1 permission form. But that's just for convenience. Your should mail the pdf, eventually including our correspondence, to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org Mails to this address are treated sort of confidentially, content will not be published and can only be accessed by OTRS volunteers. Fra: Turelio001@aol.com Emne: Re: Wikimedia Commons e-mail from user "Lasse Espe" Dato: 6. november 2012 09:10:41 GMT+01:00 Til: lasse@strandcomics.no In einer eMail vom 06.11.2012 08:25:33 Westeuropäische Normalzeit schreibt lasse@strandcomics.no: Hi, I've received notification of missing permission information for "Rocky&edith front cover.jpg": "A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license." The file is the property of comic book artist Martin Kellerman, who is represented by Strand Comics, the company I work for: http://www.strandcomics.no/. We've been given the permission and duty to handle all his material and properties, for the purposes of promotion as well as for distribution and accommodation of newspapers and publishing houses that we have made publishing deals with on his behalf. To acquire written permission from him for each and every file that I upload to Wikimedia Commons would defy the purpose of the agreement Strand Comics have with Kellerman, since our job is to take care of all these things so that he doesn't have to spend any time on it. So please let me know if there is any way we can satisfy the needs for permission without having to acquire written permission for each and every file. Can I, for instance e-mail copies of the agreements of representation we have with the copyright holders so that you indeed see that I have the authority to uplo ad these files? Hi Lasse, this is not about whether I believe you (which I do in this case) or not, it's the required procedure per our policy. If you are sure to have the full authorization from Mr. Kellerman, then your company can issue the permission. Please go to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OTRS where you will find an explanation of the process and at "Declaration of consent for all enquiries" an appropriately worded template for the permission. You need to list all Kellerman-works in it, add the name of the choosen free license and then ask the legally responsible/authorized person in your company to date and sign it. The permission will then checked by an OTRS-volunteer, who will either ask for more information or issue a permission-"ticket" which will be put on all related file pages. Regards Túrelio — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lasse Espe (talk • contribs) 14:23, November 19, 2012 (UTC) |
- Have you asked an OTRS member? Sometimes it takes weeks to get OTRS permission processed. You can also ask about them at the OTRS noticeboard. Once you've got a ticket#, myself, Túrelio, or another admin can restore them. INeverCry 22:54, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

I know it's become fashionable to attack anything related to Gibraltar. However, you made a mistake in deleting File:Panorama from Green's Lodge Battery.png. That photo was correctly licensed under CC-SA-3.0. The permission is clearly given by Jim Crone on the main page of DiscoverGibraltar.com. We are losing files like File:Water outflow gibraltar.jpg and we see them disappear via our watchlist of en:wikipedia but we then have to go to commons and trace who loaded the fie and why it was deleted. We then have to apologise for not spotting that it was under threat of deletion for some time. Is there a way of watching a whole category on commons? Is there a quick way of requesting undeletion? Your advice would be appreciated. How do I find Water_outflow_gibraltar.jpg after it has been deleted? Victuallers (talk) 09:55, 22 November 2012 (UTC)
- Watching a category only shows changes to the category page itself, so you'd have to watch individual files. I've never had cause to want to watch all the files in a category, and so I don't know what the easiest way of adding them to your watchlist, and updating your watchlist as new files are added would be. You might want to ask about this at the the Commons:Help desk. As for deleted images, you can still search for the file and then click on the redlink result to see the deletion reason. I've linked the above file, which was deleted for being all rights reserved on Flickr. To request undeletion, you can post at Commons:Undeletion requests/Current requests. We usually get these taken care of within a day or two. INeverCry 18:34, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

File:BAL Penn station.png
Would you please restore File:BAL Penn station.png? It was tagged in error. The subject is the Baltimore Penn Station. It is a panoramic view of the building. The inclusion of the statue is incidental. The image would essentially look quite similar if the statue was removed. I refer you to:
- Commons:Deletion requests/Image:X-Mas RC-NYC.jpg
- Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Capitol Records Building LA.jpg
The building is a historical landmark and the photo should be preserved. I think this falls under copyright paranoia. It would be impossible to have any panoramic pictures of the building that didn't include the sculpture. If you disagree, I ask that you restore the image and tag it so it goes through a full discussion here: Category:United States FOP cases/pending. Thanks. Evrik (talk) 07:08, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

licensing of Paintings
I appreciate if you can review these two file that I uploaded because they have been marked for deletion. I believe I have chosen the suitable license for these paintings, they are publicly displayed in "Kafr El Gouna museum" in the city of Hurghada in Egypt. And they fall in the category license of “freedom of panorama” in Egypt. I have provided two links in the summary where you will find mention of the said museum and that it holds paintings of "The eighth wonder" by Hussein Bicar, your continuous support is highly appreciated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:The_Eighth_Wonder_1.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:The_Eighth_Wonder_2.jpgKarimalaa (talk) 22:37, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

- German FOP applies to "public ways, streets or places (e.g. squares, plazas)" that are "dedicated to the public and publicly-accessible." Graveyards are mentioned, but I'm not sure about enclosed funeral chapels. Are these really dedicated to the public? If funeral services are held there, does the place need to be reserved by the party of the deceased? Also, if funeral services are held there, then people probably aren't allowed to walk through and view the place during services. I don't think a funeral chapel is "dedicated to the public." I don't know how funeral services are handled in Germany though, or in this particular location, so I could be wrong. You may want to post an undeletion request. Re: and your communication to me.
The issue is both (a) simple and (b) complicated. (a) is that I've invested a lot of time and energy into Wikipedia (fact-checking and corrections, grammatical editing, adding references, updating biographical entries, fleshing out anatomy articles, etc.), while at the same time (b) not learning the basics of what types of files go where, or how to communicate with other Wikipedians concerning meta-issues like whatever I did wrong with my user image on my own user page -- which I still don't understand.
Perhaps I need to check, step-by-step, into the fine points of (b) where they concern me. Or maybe I need more one-on-one guidance from an experienced editor. In any case, my health prevents me from attending closely to these matters right now. Does this make sense? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Erasistratus1 (talk • contribs) 16:58, November 26, 2012 (UTC)
- I wouldn't worry too much about the nuts and bolts, as there's always someone around who can help with that. The issue with your pic is that you used a weblink (like http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Erasistratus1_WIKIPEDIA_Portrait.jpg) rather than a wikilink like . For image use, see w:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial; for the rest of it, see w:Help:Wiki markup. I hope that helps.
I'm sorry to hear you're having health issues. I know about these all too well. Feeling better is usually just a matter of waiting out the pain and healing, or learning to deal with limitations. Let me know if you need any thing else. INeverCry 04:04, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Mistaken deletion
Hi, I just wanted to note that you inadvertently deleted the file File:Unknown, Iran, 17th Century - Silk Velvet Textile - Google Art Project-x1-y3.jpg for having no license although it very clearly displayed the license tag PD-old-100 (the bot that tagged it was confused because it is not in the file's description but in a transcluded template). File renaming
Hello INC. Should this image be renamed? I see that you have done some such as File:Frédéric Brandon (1995).png. I had renamed several images like this. However, I noticed Commons:File renaming doesn't have any criterias of renaming short filename (but not misleading) and also this discussion. I was also approached by MGA73 for this--Morning ☼ (talk) 10:32, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
- I think that file should be renamed. I renamed the Brandon file and several others like it because I agreed that they were ambiguous and misleading, and not solely because of their length. It's difficult to address this within policy, and the discussion you link to really doesn't say much about individual interpretation of what's misleading. It simply re-affirms that files shouldn't be renamed only because they're short. INeverCry 19:20, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Deletion
Hello INeverCry. My name is Brianna and I am a Campus Ambassador for UNLV and we are still new to some of the policies. I am working with a professor named Kim Barchard and recently, we were notified that the Copy Editing Assignment that we uploaded didn't have the correct licensing agreement. We tried fixing it but it still wasn't correct so we sent a message to Adewit asking for permission and help since the file was original his and we were waiting on his reply but you deleted the file. Would you please help us with this issue so we do not make the same mistake again? Thank you so much for your time. BriannaMaxim (talk) 06:20, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Brianna. I don't know what file you're referring to. You'll have to give me the name of it. Usually I would advise you to check out COM:OTRS. INeverCry 19:47, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- Hello. This is the link to the page you deleted: File:Copyediting_Assignment.pdf When we were first notified that we didn't do our licensing agreement correctly, we did look at the website the bot showed us and we added a licensing template with all the information, making sure it looked like the original licensing template but it said we were still wrong. What does it mean when it asks that we need to put the licensing agreement in the description box? The original author gave us permission to use his assignment as our template long as we said it was Public Domain, which we did. Thank you for your time and your help. BriannaMaxim (talk) 23:38, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- Restored INeverCry 23:57, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for your help, INeverCry. We have updated the licensing information to PD-self. The original file by Awadewit was released into the Public Domain, with no restrictions. We substantially modified this file. We are now releasing the revised file into the Public Domain, with no restrictions. We hope this is right. Let us know if additional changes are needed. French Panorama's
Hi, you recently removed a photo of a French statue of which the sculptor is still alive. Such an image is not freely licensable due to France not having a "Freedom of Panorama," which is why it was nominated for deletion. Now I wrote to the artist, he just hasn't replied yet (neither do I actually expect him to reply, but still, what more can I do?) but unfortunately the image was removed without further discussion (see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Le_Defenseur_du_Temps.jpg) Now I read up on the French nuances of their Freedom of Panorama law, and it appears that if a work of art is "unavoidable" in an otherwise allowed picture of something else, then the picture itself is also allowed, even when protected artwork is visible. Underneath the statue is a sign that reads "the machine is out of order," which is a normal sign, unprotected by copyright. Therefore, I was thinking to re-upload the image, but just name it "photograph of the sign saying that the sculpture is out of order." That way, there's no problem with Freedom of Panorama. Since you're active in the picture maintenance community (you removed the previous one) I thought I'd ask you first. What do you think? (Unrelated: isn't not having freedom of panorama just weird? What could the intention of a law be if it blocks photos on wikipedia? You'd guess that artist would actually want to have their art on there. Also, it's visible to everybody walking on that square, anyway. Laws are so slow to adapt to reality, because I'm pretty sure that this was never the intention of the law.) Stijndon (talk) 09:08, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- If you're able to get OTRS permission from the author, the image could be restored. The "sign under the statue" idea probably isn't the way to go. As for FOP itself, I hope the laws are lightened or done away with in the future, but for now they have to be followed here on Commons. INeverCry 19:56, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Renaming Files
Hello! Thanks for giving me renaming rights. Before I started doing a bunch of renaming of files, I just wanted to make sure that I am doing it correctly. To correct the name of a photo on wiki, am I supposed to use the "Move & Replace" command or just the plain "Move" command. Also, will the "Move & Replace" command automatically correct any links from within Wikipedia articles to the new name of the photo or will I still need to manually do that. Thank you so much!
Dobie80 (talk) 20:39, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- Use Move and Replace. The links should be automatically replaced. See Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Replacement is done under user account; Commons Delinker is still there as a backup. INeverCry 20:52, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
Copyright violation remplaced derivatives of File:Arms of the duchy of Milano.svg by Heralder
Hello
I uploaded images reusing elements nominated by its own author and proved as copyright violations. There was a problem with a file File:Arms of the duchy of Milano.svg and its derivatives. I've replaced the copyright violation image for a derivative work of this file, File:Coat of arms of the House of Visconti (1277).svg without poblems as you can see.. Sorry for no change before these elements. I'm really busy uploading other files. Thank you --Heralder (talk) 22:07, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
Other elements of these files new version created by the author, or derivatives from: File:Royal Arms of England (1554-1558).svg and File:Coat of Arms of the Commonwealth of England.svg

Lerche coat of arms.tiff
Hello, INeverCry, I am sorry that I uploaded this file and thereby violated the copyright law. I assumed (never assume, always check!) that the coat of arms was from 1660, as stated in the scan I received of 'parts of' the Danmarks adels årbog 1934. The coat of arms probably does date from that year, when Lerche received his "patent", but the illustration in the book was by Britze, I now understand. Hm... this probably was not of much interest to you. I just felt like writing it. :) kj 08:19, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Hey, just a heads up about this, the image was incorrectly uploaded here locally with the "fair use" template, which is not needed, as the image is licensed as Public Domain, so it can stay on Commons. :) Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 16:40, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Dear INeverCry: You have removed this file File:Princess Marie Lichtenstein and Giorgi Latsabidze.jpg |thumb|Princess Marie Aglaë of Liechtenstein and Giorgi Latso in the Vaduz Castle) due to copyright violation. Could you please explain what was wrong with it? Thank you~ Tibetibe (talk) 17:50, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

- Hi, again, I made my point here just to let you know dear friend :) Nominator for delation stated that on Pianist's web site there is copyright on the bottom, but I examined furthermore and seems to me that it must be technical problem or perhaps the page was never updated. Obviously ALL the photos on Latsabidze's gallery page [1] can not be taken by just one photographer, "Alexander Reznik", it seems to be impossible and unreal. - This one of the princess is quite a different thing. There's no EXIF or indication of an author name. INeverCry 00:15, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
- I understand! Can you please suggest how this can be restored? If such can't be done any more, would you advice if it's appropriate to write email to his representative from his web site and ask if I can get a copyright permission and get the same image of the princess distributed to commons? As to how to do this on commons, I would appreciate your kind guideline in this. Thanks! Tibetibe (talk) 17:18, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Can you clarify whether you intentionally meant to leave the two cropped images I linked to in that debate as undeleted. At the moment they exist here, but with the source now referring to now deleted donor images, which I presume is not acceptable. If you intended to delete them as well that's fine, but if not, at the very least could you replace the source parameter with links to the original flickr urls (which I no longer know due to the deletions). Ultra7 (talk) 19:30, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
- I missed those. I've deleted them. INeverCry 19:34, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
- Shame. They were valuable images, unlikely to be replaced. Did you have anything to add to my original query, or are you just applying the precautionary principle? Ultra7 (talk) 21:25, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
- Both images still featured the copyvio sculpture in the foreground, one with almost the whole sculpture at center, the other with enough of it to make me wonder. Both were questionable enough for PRP. INeverCry 21:33, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

About Bob247
Hello,
A discussion is going on on Commons:Bistro (the village pump in French) about Bob247 FoP actions. In this context, I would prefer the Bob247 contributions to be more watched by the community, at least the time the issues are solved, so I removed the autopatrol flag.

--Dereckson (talk) 18:22, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
- Deletion requests are already placed before the community for review. If this is the area of concern, I don't see what removing the autopatrol right accomplishes. I give that right to users who haven't uploaded copyvio images, or who have uploaded only a very small number, and who haven't edited in a disruptive manner. I also think it might've been better for you to speak to me before reversing my rights change only a few days after I did it. INeverCry 20:00, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
- The issue currently reported is a disruptive behavior. He were accused to follow a pattern similar to Pieter Kuiper actions.
- I would like we act very carefully on the matter and take every measure to avoid to create a second Pieter Kuiper drama.
- By the way, I would also like to note your autopatrolled flag granting possibility is a tool at the service to the community, not your personal toy.

INeverCry, the file you deleted was correctly licenced both by the author and the owner of the site where it was originally published on (see here), there's also an OTRS ticket on it.wiki. Don't know why someone might think it was uncorrectly licenced... -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 18:49, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
PS. BTW, an admin on it.wiki told me that more than 50 articles on it.wiki had missing links because Commons Delinker didn't remove the link to the files you deleted. Did you use the tool DelReqHandler? -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 18:58, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Sergio. It was deleted for lacking sufficient permission as tagged by a colleague of ours. The OTRS ticket was marked . You'll have to check with an OTRS member to see exactly what the issue with the ticket is. As for the deletion, DelReqHandler is only used for DRs, as far as I know. I deleted it thru the Bad Old Ones tool which gives me a window for each file where I click a delete button. INeverCry 19:04, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- In regard to Commons Delinker, perhaps since these were just deleted, it still needs time to complete those commands? INeverCry 19:14, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- Yes I know it takes time, but it was about deletions >1+ days older, INeverCry. -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 09:03, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

File:David_K_Williams_Chief_Executive_Officer_of_Fishbowl.jpg
You recently deleted an image I uploaded to the Commons: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:David_K_Williams_Chief_Executive_Officer_of_Fishbowl.jpg. Could you please help me understand the process for proving that this file is not under anyone's or any company's copyright, and it's free to be shared here without fear of being sued? Since it's not from any publication, online or otherwise, but from a source that can't be found online, how do I prove it does come from that source so it won't be subject to deletion? How do I attach an EXIF with it? I apologize for my ignorance on these technical matters. I appreciate your help with this. Robertlo9 (talk) 15:03, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
- You could upload the original full-size version of this, which should contain EXIF, or you could send permission for the image to COM:OTRS. INeverCry 18:07, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

I still do not understand, why the indication Боиович М. М. Члены Государственной думы (Портреты и биографии). Первый созыв. М, 1906. С. 284. (книга - public domain) is Unclear copyright status. Logotipo do Democratas
(I am using a translator)
You deleted this file: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Logotipo_do_Democratas.svg
But should not the "dem.org.br" to which you refer is the site of a Brazilian political party ... is not an institution, not a company, not a football team ... is not to delete, it is the same case of these: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PSDB.jpg http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PT_star_real_version.svg http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PCdoB.gif http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PTB.jpg http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Logos_of_political_parties_in_Brazil http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Logos_of_political_parties
And this logo was used in: http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratas_%28Brasil%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democrats_%28Brazil%29

- I am using a translator again ...
- Well, I sent this then: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Logo_Democratas.svg
- But I do not know why a red star, the hammer and the sickle, a red dove and other left-wing symbols are allowed here, but the tree of our party does not ... I don't want to believe that there is an ideological motivation to delete our logo, but if it's not me explain why others following logos are copyright freer than ours? See: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Logos_of_political_parties_in_Brazil
- In theory, the only two parties that have had problems with the logo are exactly the opposition parties of Brazil, the "Democrats" and the "PSDB", whose logos were reduced to text. Interesting, no? Juventude Democratas (talk) 20:02, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

Could you please rake a look at that DR and some others listed here. Those images come from San Diego Air and Space Museum Archives whose image is available under No Known Copyright = PD. - I don't agree with what was said there. This logo is 3D, colored in an artistic way, and in a creative cursive font with a flourish at the end. hi, I uploaded a new photo from my new camera. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Viray_Singing_origfilename_DSC00585.JPG I believe i have added license into it which says "I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby publish it under the following license: This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. You are free: to share – to copy, distribute and transmit the work to remix – to adapt the work Under the following conditions: attribution – You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work). share alike – If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one."
I created it MYSELF so i suppose that is the appropriate licensing. It's kinda blurry you see, so i would be enhancing the sharpness of the image after you see it. Is that what's needed? can you kindly check it? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Teamjonalynviray (talk • contribs) 23:52, December 9, 2012 (UTC)

Your verdict: "this image is nearly identical to the one in the copyright-protected user manual"
It was supposed to be identical. The same schematic (with some minor bugs) is also the subject of US patent 2892931. Need some advice, please.
Ran into a category where it looks like most to all of the files will have to be deleted because the uploader didn't understand "own work". It looks like the person who uploaded the photos is the widow of this gentleman. This photo was taken by Bruno of Hollywood and appears to be before 1978, but I can't find any way to conclusively date it-it's of the couple when they were still performing. He has an en.WP page. That one could be uploaded there as a non-free file because he's deceased. Should I just copy the file there and then file a DR for the copy that's here? When you see things like this, you feel for the person because there was good intent. Though I know we have to delete what we aren't sure of, I'd just like to see that all of this isn't lost. Thanks! We hope (talk) 03:20, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
- Your fair-use idea sounds like the best solution to me. That way the image is protected and it can be added to his article without worrying about it being deleted at some point. Once you've done the transfer you could speedy it, or let me know on my talk and I'll delete it directly. INeverCry 03:34, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
- In regard to the rest of those files, you could wait until after you've added the above image to the article before filing a mass DR on the others or individually speedying them. Seeing the Bruno image in the article might soften the blow on the uploader a bit. INeverCry 03:40, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
- OK-have copied the Bruno file to en.WP and added it to his article. I linked back to this discussion so it can be seen where the file originated after it gets deleted. It looks to me like the only one that might be able to be kept in the category is the award letter. We hope (talk) 05:39, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

I've tagged a few of his images for copyvio and provided sources (and noticed you have deleted some I had previously tagged), but some of his others like File:UNIFORMES BRASILIA V8.PNG [2] , File:UniformeV8.png [3] , and others appear to be based upon other works with no attribution given. It's nice to have someone like Soni who is willing to spend time on fighting vandalism, and if he makes a few mistakes in the course of his work, that's not too big a deal. I'm sure he'll do fine. My area of expertise over there is Wikiproject assessment, so if you ever come up with a questionaire on that, you know who to come to. ;)
PS. Just a thought, but if you ever decide to do an RFA on en.wiki, I would definitely put in a support vote. INeverCry 22:47, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
- That's a course Wikipedia:WP:CVU. If he passes it, he will be a CVU graduate and can get "rollback" right easily! And you voted here. Thanks! --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 23:04, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
EE-Pigeon-List
The DR of the Verwaltungsgliederung Deutschlands is some weeks closed now and the page is still around with the status quo. How does this effect the EE-Pigeon-Breed-List (when not a gallery)? Something like a category scheme would be ok with me, too. --PigeonIP (talk) 20:07, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
- I wouldn't have any objection to restoring Pigeon Breeds (EE) considering the kept decision regarding the above page. But you'll have to ask User:Jameslwoodward, the admin who originally deleted it, what he thinks. INeverCry 09:16, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

- That talk page was created accidentally when I clicked the wrong button. I deleted it because there doesn't seem to be any explicit free license for the image. The other file mentioned is a borderline de minimis case imo. You may want to post an undeletion request to get some other opinions. INeverCry 18:30, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello INeverCry. I'm pleased to meet you. I posted the file Tess_Broussard_at_the_Emmy_Awards_2012.jpg. When I first posted it I incorrectly sourced it. I have tried to source it correctly but it seems my first mistake is the only sourcing wiki sees and so the photo was deleted. The photo was taken by and is licensed by Joyce Chow at joycelchow@montebubbles.net. I sent this information with an email from Joyce Chow conveying the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license but they were unable to verify ownership. I then sent a website which used the photo, http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-848283 to also show that Ms. Chow (Montebubbles) is the license holder. And now the photo has been removed. Isn't this enough to prove Joyce Chow is the license holder?
I would like to have the photo reinstated in wiki. Could you let me know if this is possible and if not what you need from me?
I appreciate your work and your time.
Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dgk4wiki (talk • contribs) 09:05, December 14, 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for having the file restored. I have added the license while uploading the images, and I am unsure how to do it on an image that has already been uploaded. So what I did is I edited the section and copied and pasted the code for the license, and thus it showed there. You can check it and see if I did it wrong, or tell me what exactly I have to do to do it correctly. Zombie.svg
You deleted this file at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Zombie.svg. It was used in Template:The_Walking_Dead and no notice was given there. It only became apparent after it turned into a red link. Can you revert the deletion and reopen the discussion. The nominator makes several deductions about the source of the image without proof. Why he went to so much trouble to invalidate an image that was explicitly free is beyond me. Barsoomian (talk) 08:21, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
- I deleted the file because the source doesn't provide an explicit license statement. The file is already the subject of an open undeletion request, so it's restoration would depend on the outcome there. INeverCry 19:32, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
- Well, great. Since it's been deleted, I can't know what the licence statement was. There was, I suppose, no attempt made to ask the uploader to comply with this? The graphic has been in use for several years without incident, it may have been derived (or could have) from an image that is (so far) unchallenged, so I fail to see the urgency to delete this and mess up articles that use it with no notice on any of the pages it was being used. Where is the undelete request you mention? Barsoomian (talk) 19:42, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
Did you ping Bryan?
I see that CommonsDelinker has not been active, just wondering whether you pinged Bryan to ask him to restart the bot? Commons:Deletion requests/File:"Gays Against Fascism" - First Gay Pride March (7486040932).jpg
Please reconsider your decision at Commons:Deletion requests/File:"Gays Against Fascism" - First Gay Pride March (7486040932).jpg.
Looking under permission at File:"Gays Against Fascism" - First Gay Pride March (7486040932).jpg there is a link to [LSE Library @ Flickr Commons]
Reading that page, I find
- "However, many of our images are of unknown provenance, with no accompanying data about their creators or date of creation. If you make use of an image from our photostream, you are reminded to conduct an independent analysis of applicable law before proceeding with a particular new use."
and
- "The images on our photostream are meant to be used for personal, educational or research purposes. To obtain high quality digital copies, or to find out more about copyright terms for the reproduction of specific works in our collection, please contact the Library's Archives and Rare Books Division. Please note that it is our policy to charge licensing fees for commercial use."
The first paragraph quoted indicates that there should be an independent analysis of applicable law before uploading to Commons. There is no evidence of such an analysis.
The second reserves the right to charge for commercial use and authorises only personal, educational and research purposes. It does not allow for the use of the photo by comemrcial organisations that scrape wikis and charge for bogus books via Amazon etc. However Commons would allow such usage, therefore the existe3nce of the file here widens the licensing beyond that authorised by the LSE.--85.210.30.32 15:11, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

- Rather than re-opening the above DR, perhaps a separate discussion should be started on the LSE Library @ Flickr Commons source and how images from that source should be dealt with on Commons? INeverCry 20:20, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

- It seems that LSE uses the same "No Known Copyright Restrictions" license for all the images uploaded to LSE Library @ Flickr Commons, so my thought is that maybe there should be some set way of reviewing them (the above image passed a Flickr review). I think this might be a better solution than re-opening a DR on just one image. I wouldn't object, however, to another admin re-opening the above DR if they felt it necessary. INeverCry 20:48, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

While I understand to some degree
I see the blocks of Kuiper's IPs. However they are dynamic - the only effect will be to puzzle some future user who attempt to use the IP on Commons - the probability is that it is unlikely to be Kuiper. Actually tagging the Ip seems plain wrong. From experience on en wp - I have had warnings that my IP has vandalised en wp - it may well have but it wasn't me - my IP is equally dynamic. --Herby talk thyme 10:54, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

User page of Pieter Kuiper
Hi INeverCry, I've reverted this edit by you on the user page of Pieter Kuiper. We do not put such blocking templates on user pages, in particular not to those working under a real name and who collaborated considerably for a significant time period. When Pieter Kuiper stays blocked (there was never a consensus for this), there is no reason to humiliate him. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 23:00, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- If that template isn't for userpages, then whats up with this? It obviously wouldn't make sense to put it on his talk, where he could easily remove it. You don't get indef blocked by accident either btw. There's no getting away from the fact that this user is socking with IPs. Several admins have blocked the IPs for it. INeverCry 23:40, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- Some day, I think that someone needs to close the discussion at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems/Pieter Kuiper and decide what to do with this user. Of course, blocking won't affect anything if the user just uses different IP addresses all of the time. --Stefan4 (talk) 00:18, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- That's quite a mess there isn't it? As for the blocks, as an admin I have to uphold policy by blocking socks. Another thing about these IP blocks is that they are evidence of socking around a block which is a legitimate reason for instituting and/or maintaining an indef block and is something to be considered if/when a block is appealed. INeverCry 00:51, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, it's very messy. I'm not sure if it is a good idea to block the IP addresses (e.g. 95.195.129.185 and 95.195.158.142) for a whole year, though. The IP addresses suggest that he is using a mobile phone connected to the largest Swedish mobile network and he obviously gets a new IP address frequently. A long block risks blocking someone else by mistake while it is unlikely that he will use the same IP even after a day. --Stefan4 (talk) 02:50, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

closure of DR with renomination etc
The DR archive Bot does not archive closed DR if it contains more subheadings than the first one. If you close a DR where the image has been renominated, please disable further subheading. Please look at this diff for something I use to circumvent the problem. Another issue is the first subheading, the filename therein has to match the subtemplate name and should not contain other infos or a second image added behind - Bot won't archive such an DR either. --Denniss (talk) 20:04, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Long-term egregious vandalism
Thank you for deleting some of the images uploaded by User:Hiyahkick that I had flagged for copyvio. Thank you for warning this user about copyright issues. I'd like you to be aware that this user is one of hundreds of sockpuppets created by a notorious vandal who was banned from English Wikipedia several years ago (for persistently uploading copyvio content, creating deliberately erronenous content, and other issues), but continues to operate on Commons with near-impunity. I know that essentially everything this sockpuppet army uploads is a copyvio (in many cases I'm fairly sure I've seen the images before, as they were uploaded and deleted previously, but I don't have admin access to check that). However, I'm not technically adept at working with images in order to search effectively for evidence that the inagees are copyvios (I got lucky today with a few images). Thus, I'm not good at finding evidence to convince Commons administrators that a particular image is copyvio. I've been dealing with this character for years, and haven't gotten much recognition of the problem among Commons administrators. Life is too short to try to fight this egregious vandalism one image at a time, though.
I'm hoping for some help in getting Commons to control this long-term, prolific, and egregious vandal.
The sockpuppeteer in question is known at English Wikipedia as Jvolkblum. See EN:Category:Wikipedia_sockpuppets_of_Jvolkblum for a collection of sockpuppets used at English Wikipedia. Note that the Jvolkblum account was never used on Commons (he used to upload images to English Wikipedia, and didn't start working Commons until after he was thwarted on EN). Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/ChucksBike-O-Rama is a checkuser request from 2008 that turned up a collection of socks active in Commons around that time. A number of users were blocked in the 2008 time frame, but this activity has continued pretty much unabated ever since. For a principal example, Category:New Rochelle, New York and its subcategories contain hundreds of images from this army of sockpuppets. In addition to Hiyahkick, accounts active on Commons in the last few months (typically for only a day or two -- these are throw-away sock accounts) have included (but are not limited to) User:Grabbybagg, User:Tuscanice, User:Frankiesay22, User:NataFallon1, User:MotortodaParty, User:DuckieMoMo, User:ChanceTears, User:28Shimms, User;Midnitesweeps, User:Octogoggles, User:Kepclm, and User:ElykSenoj. Sometimes he edits from anonymous IPs -- for example, see Special:Contributions/66.87.0.126 and this cross-wiki history. Checkuser effectiveness is limited by the fact that he typically has access to several different Internet services; recently. he has often edited from mobile phone IPs (like that Sprint IP). However, after seeing thousands of his edits, I seldom have any doubt when I'm looking at his work. --Orlady (talk) 05:47, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Orlady. The first thing I noticed was that the Jvolkblum acct is non-existent on Commons, which is a problem in regard to tagging these socks and starting a category for them. I would suggest maybe changing those socks from the 2008 CU to "socks of ChucksBike-O-Rama" and changing ChucksBike-O-Rama to sockpuppeteer. This way there's a reference point for socks tagged on Commons, rather than having people click on a non-existent acct. We could add a reference to the en.wiki Jvolkblum deal to the ChucksBike-O-Rama userpage.
It looks like all or most of the images are New York-related? This will help if CU won't, though perhaps we should request a new CU anyways? It also looks like atleast the grabbybag acct is used on en and com, so that could be blocked outright. Maybe others, but I'm too tired to look at the moment. I'm going to bed, but I'll have a better look at all this tomorrow. INeverCry 07:39, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking at this. I understand that the absence on Commons of the Jvolkblum account has been an issue in the past. ChucksBike-O-Rama is probably as good an account as any to identify as the sockpuppeteer, although it is by no means the earliest of the accounts used on Commons.
- In recent times, this sockpuppeteer has often limited his accounts to either Commons or EN, but about about a third of the accounts used on Commons (at least the ones that I know about) also get used on EN. Every known account on EN is blocked; also, on EN these accounts' contributions to EN get purged for being the work of a banned user (unless those contents are validated by someone else). Regarding users who have been active at both sites, here are global contributions page for two of the registered users (ElykSenoj and ChanceTears) who have worked on both sites within the last several months -- and who made some edits at EN that haven't been completely deleted. I'm less concerned about the user accounts (which are typically abandoned after a short time) than I am about the images. When a user uploads a bunch of images with license claims and source information that doesn't clearly accord with the nature of the image (for example, small-scale photos, consistent with website photos, that are claimed to be from the user's own camera) and that user is already blocked on EN as a proven sockpuppet of a banned user notorious for violating copyright and misrepresenting the sources of uploaded content, I believe that Commons should make a presumption that the content is misrepresented -- rather than allowing all contents except the most obvious copyvios to remain on Commons because of the assumption of good faith.
- Most, but not all, of the images of concern are related to New York (generally New Rochelle, New York, and Sarah Lawrence College). There also are images of people, artwork, and other topics that are in some way related (or said to be related) to New Rochelle (for example, Norman Rockwell, the Lawton blackberry cultivar, America's Cup yachts and yachtsmen, and actors and actresses who once appeared in Thanhouser film studio productions). Some materials are legitimately PD-US due to their being published before 1923. However, it's not clear that everything that *looks* old truly *is* old (this is a particular concern with artwork) or was actually published in the past (as distinct from being placed in a family photo album in 1919, then donated to a library in 1995). --Orlady (talk) 15:16, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

With files like File:Polbae Burn just above Darloskine Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 561284.jpg, you've left the geograph uncategorized template on the page, which should be removed. It wouldn't hurt to remove the check categories template either. When an image is placed in categories, any uncategorized template should be removed. You can use Hotcat to do all your category work, as the tool removes those uncategorized templates automatically. INeverCry 20:12, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi. I can't see this picture, do you know what's the problem?--Rapsar (talk) 18:41, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
- I came across an image with this same problem a week or so ago. I don't know what exact bug causes this. You could post this on COM:Help desk or COM:Village Pump, and I'm sure someone would identify the bug. INeverCry 18:48, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

The Hutchins Hapgood file I tagged for deletion was already deleted! There was another file called "Hutchins Hapgood2" that was renamed "Hutchins Hapgood" after the deletion. It was meant to be kept. Sorry about the confusion, I'm learning.WQUlrich (talk) 00:52, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi! This image is only around the head of goku. Does it violate this copyright?. Thanks PetrohsW 02:00, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Request
File:Grev Turegatan 1962.jpg [4]
I tagged as a possible copyvio and the uploader removed the tag. If you have a moment, could you take a look. The rationale he gave was PD-Sweden-photo which may be true, but it seemed to be outside the criteria as it was stated in the template and I feel an independent set of eyes on the image is best. Dennis Brown (talk) 14:53, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- The bit about "photographic works" as opposed to "photographic pictures" seems a bit confusing. Seeing that the uploader removed the CSD, which he's basically allowed to do, one option would be to use Delete, which he's not allowed to remove, instead. Another option you might try is posting a question about this image at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. INeverCry 18:31, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- The confusion for me was the exception to be PD if it was released by the press, but this image was instead published by a museum (per the description of the source itself), and wouldn't seem to qualify. And I wasn't sure if creators could remove speedy tags, I know the policies are very different here than enwp. I'm trying to get up to speed to help here a bit more, without stepping on toes. Thank you for the assistance, I will ponder it a bit before deciding. Dennis Brown (talk) 19:56, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- The statement "such as images by the press" leaves me wondering what else is covered, and if the difference is whether or not the work is considered artistic or how much it has to do with where and why it was originally taken and published. You might also ask User:Thuresson, as he's an SV speaking admin, who're quite few here. INeverCry 20:04, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- I've dropped Thuresson a note pointing here. It is an unusual concern, not something you run across every day, so I didn't want to labor it with the editor who removed the tag. Hopefully Thuresson can shed some light. Thanks again. Dennis Brown (talk) 19:29, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Establishing if a particular photo met the requirements must be done on a case by case basis. What should be considered is how a photo can be assessed according to the concept "threshold of originality". Is this a photo that anybody with a camera would be able to make or is it a work of art, made by an artist with an original idea? As far as I'm concerned there is nothing original about this particular photo, just like most photos you can find in a daily newspaper. The identity of the photographer or the publisher is not a concern here, the date is though. Photographs that are works of art can be found here. At least it is not obviously a candidate for deletion so a formal request for deletion should be made if you are still not convinced. Thuresson (talk) 21:40, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks a bunch for deleting that file and refusing to restore it. Whatever permissions problem there was can now never be fixed. Complete waste of time trying to work out what is going on or get any help here. Barsoomian (talk) 10:03, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
- The issue with that file is simple. The source is too vague about licensing. If the source gave an explicit license for the file rather than just saying "free", it could be hosted on Commons. See COM:L for appropriate licenses. INeverCry 17:37, 21 December 2012 (UTC)
- All I know is what you say since I can't see the source or whatever information was originally supplied by the uploader. If I knew maybe the "issue" could be addressed and correct permissions sourced. If I knew where the damn thing came from I could contact the author or do a clean reimplemention myself. Hundreds of pages linked to that image and you deleted it without a word notifying anyone. A file that was "free" however imperfectly documented and no one ever complained about until some editor decided to nitpick at it and have it trashed. Barsoomian (talk) 08:28, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Even, by the Czech law, any flags and symbols do not apply to copyright. I have made a similar image to the original one and have added there the text and the cross. It is my own image. Can you please explain? Thanks --Carlmarche (talk) 04:38, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
- I've fixed the link at your undeletion request. Let's see what the result of that turns out to be. Bacon_Portrait-of-Lucian-Freud-1964.jpg
Hey, I don't know a lot about this. Any hints about how to upload it and Bacon-Study-for-Portrait-of-Isabel-Rawsthorne-1964-590x784.jpg the right way? - Images by Bacon, who died in 1992, are copyrighted and can't be uploaded to Commons. You should look into uploading them directly to Wikipedia under fair-use. See w:File:Head (1948).jpg for an example. INeverCry 01:42, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
How to prove copyright permission?
Full question text |
---|
Hello INeverCry. I'd really appreciate any advice you can give me on how I can correct the copyright permission information for a file I uploaded on 29th November, deleted by you due to 'missing permission as of 9th December'? Could this relate to user Griot-de's Wikipedia entry on 9th December stating 'Authority control moved from invalid place'? The file details are on my talk page - it's a photo of a celebrity, taken by a fan (Paul Aitken) at a public fan convention.
Otherwise, I believe the issue relates to 'proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license'. Paul Aitken has given me written permission (in the form of a Personal Message on Facebook) agreeing to release the photo under a free license, specifically to allow me to put it on Wikipedia to be used by anyone for any purpose. I can ask him to send a completed templated form on the OTRS to permission-commons@wikimedia.org from his email address, but I read that this may take approximately a month to get a response, and that Commons then needs to verify his identity, so 'the email address must come from one that can be authorised online'. Do you know how this can be achieved in this case, since his email address is not on any official website? Or, is there an alternative route to proving permission that I have missed? The photo taker has no interest in keeping the copyright, and has also made the photo openly available on the internet. Is there a way for him to transfer the copyright to me legally, or to give permission for me to deal with this file upload on his behalf? Failing the above, if he were to create a Flickr account and upload the photo to it, expressing a free licence, and I was to upload it to Commons from there, will the issue of proof of his identity still arise? Thanks in advance for any help, Clare ClareGC (talk) 11:21, 24 December 2012 (UTC. |
- The best way to go would be to have Paul Aitken send an email to COM:OTRS. Any question regarding email validity should be directed to an OTRS volunteer or to the OTRS Noticeboard. An alternative might be having him upload a full-res copy of the image himself with EXIF data. INeverCry 16:55, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

- First you have to show proof that you have permission to upload these images under a free license. The source/author info you gave was:
- source=Crédit Photos agence Reflex création
- author=Frédérique Vasseur, Ray Wilson, Marc de Fromont, Collection Viollet
- These are professionally done photos. You need to show that the above source/authors have released these images under a free license. INeverCry 16:43, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Clean up
Thanks for cleaning up the mess I did in File:Tetraiodoethene.svg: I usually create a temporary file, upload, and change its name, but in this case I was half-distracted and uploaded a wrong version, so when I re-uploaded the file was renamed to the temporary name. But I am not here to justify my error, but to request the additional elimination of the temporary file File:lixo.svg, lixo is trash in Portuguese (meaning that I erase these files after I upload), not a nice name for a chemical compound! deletions
hi;
in this case, [5] i don't see why you felt it was ok to "mass delete" on such flimsy "evidence" & without anyone else being involved in the discussion.
you also did not provide any explanation of your reasoning?
if this is the new "standard" for removing material, then i didn't hear about it, & it really needs to be discussed by the community. especially for mass-deletions!
Lx 121 (talk) 21:42, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
- I deleted it per COM:PRP. Look through the archives for the past 6 months or more, (these mass DRs have to be archived by hand, so December and late November stuff will still be unarchived), and you'll find 100s of these uncontested mass DRs deleted/closed in the same way by several admins, especially the 100s of mass DRs by Eugene. We are short on admins who want to close DRs and, from what I've seen, a large number of these small size/no EXIF mass DRs never get commented on at all. Here's a mass DR by me that is still open with no comments from over a month ago. I'm just doing my best to take care of these DRs and keep Commons from having a huge backlog. In the end we need more admins willing to handle closing and commenting on DRs and more users commenting on them. INeverCry 22:09, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

Friuli-Venezia flag
Hello! The deleted file File:Friuli-Venezia_Giulia-Flag.png was used by quite a few WP articles, so I was thinking of recreating it from appropriately licensed elements. Problem is, the FOTW page from which it came shows a few variants, and I don’t know which was copied here. Is there any way you could temporarily undelete the file, or e-mail it to me, so I can identify the design—or just have a peek yourself and let me know what it looked like? The two most likely choices appear to be the one showing the eagle taking flight from a mural crown (which looks like a sort of castle) and the one with just the eagle displayed (in the classic heraldic posture: body vertical, wings spread to either side). The latter version might also have “FRIULI” written sideways in the hoist (on the left-hand side). Thanks for your attention.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:59, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

You are not allowed to sell them, use them for advertising, logotypes or products (selling fake merchandising). Copyright infringements are against the law! Even if I do not sue you the producers of South Park might." This non-commercial license isn't allowed on Commons. See COM:L. The South Park material is also possibly a COM:DW issue.
