Churches in X cats

[edit]

Hi, Notice you are doing some very useful work on sorting out the pics of churches - thanks. However, I'm not sure about some of the churches in <village> categories. For example Category:Churches in St. Just in Roseland only contains imagery of the parish church. The category for that church should be Category:Church of St Just, St Just in Roseland (or similar). The issue about if it should be St or St. isn't really important.

The two categories are very different: Its correct to say that that church is a Grade I listed, Anglican church. It is not necessarily correct to say that the "Churches in St Just in Roseland" are Grade I listed, Anglican churches, as that concept can (and does) include other buildings that are not necessarily Grade I or Anglican. If the village only contains the one church, it seems redundant to have a churches in village category - would be preferable to just have the correctly named church category.--Nilfanion (talk) 18:48, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Thank you for your observations. I began by trying to follow the pattern which existed without editing too many of the files. Because of the settlement pattern of Cornwall it is not always obvious how to categorize churches, whether by civil parish, ecclesiastical parish or actual settlement (e.g. St Nectan's Church in the parish of St Winnow has been given the category of Churches in Lostwithiel). Many of the Methodist chapels are short of information so it is hard to be precise about the categories for them. I hope to be able to make the categorization more consistent later. I do not know whether it is possible to rename a category rather than move each of the files to another one.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 19:11, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that Cornwall is particularly difficult for this :) On the question of civil parish (CP), ecclesiastical parish (EP) or settlement, my opinion is if the settlement is large (it includes multiple churches), use that. Otherwise, use the CP. The EP is obviously relevant to this subject, but it only really applies to a sub-set (CofE, but not Catholic/Methodist/whatever). It makes sense to also note the EP on the Anglican churches, whereas the CP is relevant to all denominations and also better ties in with how secular buildings should be treated.
And it is not possible to rename a category unfortunately. Posting a move request to User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands, asking for admin assist (I am one) or making use of the Cat-a-Lot gadget are the most sensible ways to handle it.--Nilfanion (talk) 22:33, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: John Rylands Library

[edit]

Hi, I assume you are referring to Category:The John Rylands Library and comparing it to w:John Rylands Library - and asking if there's any reason for the "The". There is no reason for the Commons category to include "The", and the conventions here are the same as on Wikipedia.

Given that I'd suggest that you move the content to category:John Rylands Library. Instructions are at Commons:Rename a category, basically if you swap the {{Category redirect}} to the other page you'll be done.--Nilfanion (talk) 19:36, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
