- Hi, I'm writing about your (very nice) image of the menstrual cycle . This image gives off the wrong impression that the follicle goes from a primordial follicle to a tertiary follicle in the first days of the menstrual cycle. That is wrong since it takes almost a year for the follicle to attain the antral stage (and then be recruited and selected as the dominant follicle that will undergo ovulation). The timescale from the recruitment of the primordial follicle all the way to ovulation actually takes about 375 days! (c.f. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folliculogenesis). This is a commone mistake and even textbooks have it, but wouldn't it be great if wikipedia were a step ahead? All you need to do is change the first three pictures to, say, slightly smaller versions of the fourth one with a smaller antrum. You can look at the diagram in the folliculogenesis page for "inspiration". Notice how the follicle is already "grown-up" when it reaches the selection window to enter the ovarian cycle? Thanks! Image Tagging Image:Near the Langjökull glacier Iceland 2005.JPG
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Near the Langjökull glacier Iceland 2005.JPG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Hi Chris 73,
I have no idea how to use this thing, which is somewhat embarassing working with computers all day.... anyway, i wanted to use your photo of Nagaoya Airport as a graphic panel at an exhibition if thats ok. Just wondered if you have a bigger version? Something you could maybe email or send via post??? I don't know? I Need it to blow up to over 5m lengthways so need as higher res / larger size as possible. Can you help? I don't know how you can reply to this??? I don't have an account or anything? it'd be great if you could help. Regards, burridge81
- Hi. The uploaded image is the largest one i can get from my camera. Did you click on the image to get the largest file at 1600 × 1182 pixel? Don't forget to give credit to me (Chris 73) when you use it in your installation. CHeers and good luck, Chris -- Chris 73 21:16, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Hi CHris, Thanks for your reply, but we have chosen a different image purely because we needed such a large version to blow up to that size, (we used an image we could get at 14572 pixels wide!!!) But thanks for getting back to me, and appreciate the open-use rights of your photos for future reference. Burridge81

Hi Chris. You state that the picture is a bunch of public domain images mashed into one file. I don't think you can copyright such small changes to public domain work. Is it ok if I change the licensing from GNU to PD? -Indolences 02:31, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Hello!
Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. 78.48.232.195 20:17, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Question about Meta info
[edit]Hello, Chris 73, I've noticed that your photo has no meta info unlike pictures taken by others. Are these taken by film? (I highly doubt about it) or do you use some kind of software to erase all meta tags? If your pictures were in the latter case, can you tell me which program is? Thanks. --Applebee 23:14, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Administrative notice
[edit]Dear Chris 73. I am writing to you to inform you that because of inactivity, you may lose your adminship on Commons.
Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a two-week poll on the proposed policy's talk page).
If you want to keep your adminship, you have to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days. Note that if you don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will then lose the adminship anyways.
Thank you,

My use of your beautiful pictures is not for a textbook or article. I am doing a virtual climb of Mount Kilimnjoro for my indoor cycling class.

I will give full credit to your pictures under the licenses you have provided.
Thank you for your amazing work on this site.

Regarding File:Cathedral of Magdeburg Inside.jpg
[edit]Hello Chris 73!
I just wanted to congratulate you on some truly great images that you have contributed for everyone here. :) I am contacting you because I had a question regarding the image mentioned in the subject line (File:Cathedral of Magdeburg Inside.jpg) and its use. I am working on a back cover image for a book which is soon to be published, and I was wanting to use your cathedral image as a reference (not using the actual photo as is). I was hoping to reference it when doing a straight digital painting of an ancient looking chamber. This would help me with some of the architectural detailing (I plan on using several personally shot reference images as well). I understand what you have stated about using the unchanged photo in a printed work, but I was curious as to what you feel is appropriate in this scenario. Thanks in advance! :)
- Hi. If you use a computer program to change the image (i.e. to make it look like an oil painting etc), it is a derivative work. The use of the image is still free, yet a license and credit is needed, e.g. This Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons image is based on a image from user Chris 73 that is freely available at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cathedral_of_Magdeburg_Inside.jpg under the creative commons cc-by-sa 2.5 license.. Of course, this puts your new image also under a new license. If you use my image only for "inspiration", but do not base your image on my image, then you can do with your image whatever you want. In summary: There is no money involved on my side eitehr way, the question is only if you have to credit me and put the (modified) image under a cc license or not. Hope this helps, I wish you much success for your book. Cheers, -- Chris 73 (talk) 06:58, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the info sir! It cleared up some of the questions I had regarding the work. My digital painting definitely leans more towards the second example as opposed to the derivative work explanation, but I might use the credit line you mentioned just to be safe, and obviously, it's always nice to give credit where credit is due :)
- sure. Good Luck. -- Chris 73 (talk) 07:59, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Starving_Irish_family_during_the_potato_famine.JPG. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Nautilus Shell Image - Request for Use
[edit]Hi Chris - I work for a company called SELEX Communications Ltd (U.K.) - I am starting an INTERNAL process improvement project and we came across your wonderful Nautilus shell image http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:NautilusCutawayLogarithmicSpiral.jpg We'd really like to re-use that image as a logo / symbol for our INTERNAL project - not for any external / marketing purpose. I think the image will appeal to our engineers - it reflects our desire for excellence in design, lean engineering and continuous improvement. Can you please grant us the right (free of charge) to use it INTERNALLY on documents as a logo; e.g. MS Powerpoint, Word. Please let me know either way, as if you are not happy I may have to get another image commissioned. Thanks - fraser.donachie@selex-comms.com
- Unfortunately, the image is only available under the CC license as indicated. The license, however, is free of charge. You would have to add the license somewhere in the credits. Hope this helps. Cheers -- Chris 73 (talk) 19:17, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

CoTuRa
[edit]The book "Autodesign in Nederland" lists "Cotura" as a brand in it's own right. The chassis and body are supposedly made by Co van der Tuyn, a Dutch coachbuilder. He used the BMW mechanics to build at least 2 of these specials, one getting a Mercedes-Benz later on in it's life.
I am a bit surprised you found this car in Austria and congratulate you with quite a rare find!

Your USGS-Galleries
[edit]Hello Chris 73, could you have a look on your galleries (User:Chris 73/Free Gallery 001 and the other), please? There's often a dead link in the source-field like File:AurichalciteUSGOV.jpg and I couldn't find the right one. I think, it's better, you control them, before they will be deleted because of "no source". If you show me, where the right links are, I can help you. I'm often active in the area of minerals. Greetings -- Ra'ike T C 22:28, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
- Hi. Not sure what you mean. The link for the file File:AurichalciteUSGOV.jpg was available when i uploaded it 5 years ago, but since then the source website has changed. Theimage was there when i uploaded it to Wikipedia, but I don't know where the image is now on the source page if at all. I am also not sure what the commons policy is about images whose souce has changed since the upload, my preference would be to trust the uploader unless there is an indication of someting wrong. Anyway, I don't have the time to look up all these missing images. Sorry, and best wishes, -- Chris 73 (talk) 06:11, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Please help replace this outdated license
[edit]Hello!
Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license {{PD}}. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding {{PD-self}} if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

Planning to use your usu (mochi pounding) picture in my work
[edit]Hi, Chris.
I am planning to use your great mochi-pounding picture in my work. I will, of course, include the wording that you provided (re. the license).
Just in case you're curious, I'm a writer in California, writing essays about each of the Joyo kanji. These essays will be posted on a website, available for a small fee to readers. My project is called Joy o' Kanji and should launch soon. Anyway, this picture will go in the essay about the usu (臼) kanji. I can send you a copy of that essay if you like.
Thanks for making your image available! I appreciate it. Eve Kushner (talk) 19:22, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Menstrual cycle image
[edit]Hi, the image File:MenstrualCycle.png and its versions are extensively used in reproductive medicine related articles. These are great images, but they incorrectly present the changing of levels of FSH and LH during the menstrual cycle (as described for example in Gynecology by Ten Teachers, 18th ed., 2006, by Campbell and Monga, cf. [4]) and should be removed till rectified:
- Follicular phase. At the beginning of the phase it raises and then starts to fall under the negative-feedback effect of estrogen (and inhibin) so that only the dominant follicle develops further.
- The level of FSH and LH are definitely not the same in the beginning of the menstrual cycle.
- The surge of FSH and LH starts already in the late follicular phase.
I also think "Image created by me based on various sources." is not precise enough. Sources and data that were used should be explicitely stated. --Eleassar my talk 11:12, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- The FSH and LH curves look suspicious indeed, concentrations of various other hormones would be interesting as well(prolactin, testosterone, SHBG...). Perhaps you did underestimate the complexity of the task when you removed your posts to the medicine talk board - the menstrual cycle is extremely variable by age and individually, getting good data is not as easy as it might appear. Richiez (talk) 16:15, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- I once had the original OpenOffice SVX File uploaded (link on image page), but this got deleted as it is not an open format.

can I use your oyster picture?
[edit]Hi Chris
I'd like to use your oyster pic from my website but it would look unprofessional to attribute it in the banner. Could I attribute at the bottom of the main page or on a page devoted specifically to attributions?
Sincerely, Andrew Steiner
- Hi. It would help to have a link to the picture you are talking about, since i have uploaded thousands of pictures. Attribution at the bottom of the page is fine for me in any case. Cheers, -- Chris 73 (talk) 07:28, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Use of a Nautilus image
[edit]Chris,
I’m writing to request permission to use a photograph of a Nautilus shell, that comes from a Wikipedia web page, for a manuscript to be published by the Paleontological Society. The image is located at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:NautilusCutawayLogarithmicSpiral.jpg. The manuscript concerns a particular methodology employed in the teaching of a paleontology course at Florida Gulf Coast University, and will appear in an edited volume. The publication is not commercial, rather academic. I will not profit from its production or distribution.
Please let me know if the image may be used.
Many thanks,
Mike Savarese

Image Usage
[edit]Chris, May I use your picture of the 1886 Mercedes-Benz Motorwagen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Benz_Patent_Motorwagen_1886_(Replica).jpg in an advertisement I am making. Please respond soon. Thanks.
- Hi. As long as you cite the license somewhere on the advertising, you are free to use the picture as you like. -- Chris 73 (talk) 06:36, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
A guide to Polish copyright
[edit]Following some recent discussions, I have attempted to compile a guide to Polish copyright. It's available at User:Piotrus/PolishCopyright. I'd like to invite you to comment on it, and of course you are more then welcome to improve it. I am contacting you and several other commons editors who I know work with Polish Copyrights, as I am not aware of any centralized noticeboard to reach them, feel free to pass this message to such a place if it exists, and to whoever else you think could be interested in such a topic. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 16:43, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
[edit]Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Deletion request
[edit]More than a week ago, I saved in Commons a picture with file name Emil_Wikstrom_Arcus_Tendit_Apollo.JPG. It shows a statue in Helsinki. But unfortunately I noticed almost immediately thereafter that I had confused two Finnish sculptors, Emil Wikström and Emil Cedercreutz. This statue is not made by Emil Wikström but by Emil Cedercreutz. Therefore the file name is absolutely misleading, and the picture should not be here, at least not with its current name. Moreover, Emil Wikström died in 1942 and Emil Cedercreutz in 1949, and therefore copyright on this statue is still in force (but would not be if it were made by Emil Wikström). I apologize my error. As soon as I had noticed it, I marked the file for deletion, both because of copyright issues and of erroneus file name, but it still is not deleted.
The deletion log of Commons shows clearly that you have the privilege for deleting files. Could you delete that wrongly-named file as soon as possible, please. -KLS (talk) 11:59, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for menstrual graph
[edit]Hello,
I appreciate the info graphic you did on the menstrual cycle. I can neither confirm nor deny the recent comment about the antral follicle but the graphic suits my purposes very well. I am an ob/gyn doing an educational website for my patients and the public. The URL is drginanelson.com.
Another thing, it is very helpful that you included the attribution language. I am always concerned that I understand the terms of use or that I am attributing correctly. This way it is both correct and convenient.
Best regards, Gina Nelson

[edit]Hi Chris — in line with the above, I'd like to let you know that the admin inactivity run for February-March 2016 has now finished. As you failed to indicate willingness to retain your admin privileges or to perform the required number of admin actions, I submitted a request on Meta-Wiki to have your adminship revoked as required by our inactivity policy. A Wikimedia steward will attend to this request in the coming hours, after which I will add your to the autopatrolled user group as you are a trusted and experienced member of the Commons community. I'd like to use this opportunity to thank you for the many years of your service to Commons; while it is disappointing that you're no longer as active as you used to be, I hope you will come back to us one day and will continue contributing to the project. Of course, please do feel free to re-apply for adminship when this happens :-) Thanks again! odder (talk) 00:21, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:GAMap-doton-Atlanta.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. People by occupation has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |
