Discussion

•  Comment Can I ask why editing protected pages isn't considered admin actions? It's pretty much the main use I make of the tools, and I've been reasonably active the past few months overall. --Waldir ^talk 22:20, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
  • @Waldir: I believe it was discussed at some point in the past, and the outcome of the discussion was that edits to protected pages should not count because it would be extremely tough to keep track of them. With almost 40 admins affected by this inactivity run, it would take hours to check whether they haven't edited a protected page at some point in the past six months, and there is currently no tool to check that automatically… But I am glad that you signed here even though you had made those edits, thanks! odder (talk) 06:38, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
    • Perhaps that's just further evidence that this a silly policy? "You need to do a certain number of admin actions! Oh, those ones don't count, because it'd be hard to count them." I occasionally need to view deleted pages, but from the fact I apparently have only one admin action, I can only assume that they don't "count", either. J Milburn (talk) 09:00, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
      • @J Milburn: Our de-adminship policy did not cover any edits until today, so your sarcastic argument is rather useless. It does not cover passive use of administrator privileges, either, so that's that. Being an admin, I would've thought you knew how to change policies that you consider "silly", but that's just me. (And in case someone considers this comment short-tempered: we see critical comments about the policy at nearly every inactivity run, but no one ever wants to start a formal discussion about it.) odder (talk) 13:40, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
        • I have no idea what the first part of your comment means, so I'm afraid I can offer no response to that. As for the second part, I'd rather spend my time doing something more productive, and, as you know, I'm not actually particularly active on this project... I value having the admin buttons in case I need to chase up a copyright issue from the English Wikipedia or email, but I've no great interest of launching policy proposals. I would honestly be interested in hearing why you believe it is a good policy (or why you take time to enforce it if you don't) as I just don't see it. J Milburn (talk) 19:35, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
    • @Odder: I am not familiar with the discussion in question, but it seems to me that editing protected pages is perfectly legit, and if it's hard to measure, there's an easy solution: an admin can be notified if there aren't enough easily detectable admin actions, but if the individual admin can point to enough difficult to detect admin actions (like protected page edits), they can retain their tools -- any problem with that process? -Pete F (talk) 19:59, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
      • @Pete F: As I said above, edits — both to the MediaWiki: namespace as well as to protected pages — were not covered by the policy until today (and this addition is only meant to refer to edits to the MediaWiki: namespace as far as I am aware). The tools that we've been using for a few years now were only counting logged actions (deletions, protections, blocks, imports and user rights changes), but I've heard in the past 24 hours that it might be possible to include edits made to protected pages in the future, which would definitely help us all. In any way, if we'd like to count such edits as admin actions, it will require discussion and change to policy. odder (talk) 21:05, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
