Upload with no NAME
Dear help desk, I have just uploaded 169 files to Commons via Pattypan, but oh shock, I noticed (even after testing) too late that the filename did not reach my PattyPan file, and now there is hardly any info in the filename, see: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:NMVW_files_concerning_Bukittinggi_2020-09 Though the other info is there, it may make these items hard to find. Can they be deleted, so I can re-upload them WITH the proper name?
looking forward to a smart solution best Richard (Riezelaar) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Riezelaar (talk • contribs) 15:04, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Riezelaar: Is it actually quicker for you if we delete them all than for you to write rename requests into each of the file descriptions? - Jmabel ! talk 15:17, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- Or is there someone with a tool that can do a mass rename? - Jmabel ! talk 15:17, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- Been some time since I used User:Perhelion/massrename.js but it should work just fine. --Minoraxtalk 15:36, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- Taking into account that there isn't any similarities in the current file names, it'll be hard to actually use the tool. Unless the extension (.jpg) can be used as the "find" in "find-and-replace". --Minoraxtalk 15:38, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- I have tried to use that js but never saw the interface. :( — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:43, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

My name is [...]
My name is Jorge Washington Rodriguez "Passive Homosexual" and I believe that trying to shows myself as a gay man posting pics here in Commons, apparently all goes wrong and failed, because everything that I submit sadly is for deletion. I do not had any "Evil intention" or purposely posted my pics to "disrespect anyone in Commons" or anybody else. I would like to apologize with Commons and ask to show me how to deleting my pics. I do not have any "evil intentions" or wants purposely disrespect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jorge W Rodriguez "Passive Homosexual" (talk • contribs) 00:12, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
- Signing your posts is required on talk pages and it is a Commons policy to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). I need someone to check a licence
Hello! Today I uploaded this file called file:Coffee-2346113 in blue.svg, it is based on a cc-zero-licence file named file:Coffee-2346113.svg (from Pixabay, but uploaded on commons by an different user) - only the colour of the version I edited is different. uploading a text of unknown origin
I have a text, "The Hymn of the Hampshire countryside" that does not appear on the Internet other than where I recently uploaded it to our church website in response to an enquiry. The text is of unknown origin and I can find no reference online to even the title of the text. I want to make it more readily available but the rules for uploading a text don't appear to cover this situation. I don't own copyright and there's no way of finding out who was the author - we've used the text in church for at least seventy years. The text is not published in any known hymn book, only in locally-produce handout form. I believe it should be public domain and that an author - if one were able to track him or her down - would expect this. I can't find guidance on such unattributable text in the help sections? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Horace100 (talk • contribs) 10:59, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- I'd put PD-old-assumed on it if the author is unknown and it's been around for donkey's years. 11:08, 1 October 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rodhullandemu (talk • contribs) 11:08, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

Richard Jewell Durrell - Picture
I would like to upload a picture of Richard Jewell Durrell to his Wikiepdia page. https://www.startribune.com/obituaries/detail/10910094/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by SteveBacheler (talk • contribs) 15:41, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- There does not appear to be a page en:Richard Jewell Durrell, en:Richard Durrell, or en:Richard J. Durrell, so first you would have to create such a page and have it accepted (assuming that by "Wikiepdia page" you meant a page on the English-language Wikipedia).
- I'm guessing that you do not own the copyright of that photo, so to upload it on Commons you would need to find out who owns the copyright and get them to free-license it. Frankly, you are very unlikely to succeed in doing that.
- Once an article is on the English-language Wikipedia, you could follow the policy laid out at en:Wikipedia:Non-free content and upload the file to the English-language Wikipedia. This would not involve Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 00:35, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
Can I upload a portrait of a public figure?
The picture is found on this link. This is a portrait of a government official in China, it seems very official so I thought that it should be fine. - If you cannot find any copyright information, then presumably it is copyrighted, not free-licensed, and therefore not OK for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 00:39, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
Copyright help regarding File:CAD Exchanger GUI.png
Hello, I did not create this file myself, it is the company's logo published online. That's why I specifies where I found it: a link to the web page where I got it (https://cadexchanger.com/).
But I got the message that I need to provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page) and an appropriate license tag. But I don't know where to get it. What should I do in this case?

I have a picture taken at a qualifying monument. It has a child in it. Figures prominently in the picture, but from the back so cannot be identified. It was during a historic re-enactment which the child was a costumed participant. Again. Photographed from the back. Cannot be identified. I have never done this before, decided to clear out my folders during this month's contest. But every step has been a challenge. For example, the username "No Usernames Available" was unavailable, as well as 1,209 other usernames I tried. Looks like I can attach it here for comment maybe.
Well, I think I inserted it, but I can't see it. So I have no idea if anyone else can see it to answer my question.
Maybe I already asked this. I am trying to find out about releases when people are in a picture. Is a release needed if the person is photographed from the back and not identifiable? I have found nothing on the questions of releases for pictures of people. At all.
Also, I have no idea how to find my way back to see if anybody has answered any questions that I have asked. You don't make this easy! I read dozens of pages that have nothing to do with what I want to know. Search doesn't turn up anything useful. FAQ doesn't have anything relevant either. So I guess I'll keep asking questions, but never find out if there are answers. You do not make this easy.
Now what? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Largely Forgotten (talk • contribs)

Hello,
I am the original owner of the image File.Zinc8 Schematic.png, but you are asking me to edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. The picture can also be found online here: https://www.zinc8energy.com/media/downloads/presentation.pdf What's the best way to write the copyright or the ownership?
Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Roberto Orendain (talk • contribs) 22:52, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Roberto Orendain: I assume you mean File:Zinc8 schematic.png
- As for permissions, this is one of those cases where the COM:OTRS process, though cumbersome, may be the clearest way to do this. The other possibility would be to indicate the license for the image in the PDF & update that online at www.zinc8energy.com, but it still wouldn't necessarily clarify that the image is original to your company.
- Other information that should be provided:
- An actual description in the "description" field. Repeating the title is not a description.
- Relevant categories
- Further discussion should probably be at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Zinc8 schematic.png. I've linked the above exchange there. - Jmabel ! talk 00:43, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

Why does text in SVG files get messed up?
One frustrating hour ago, I uploaded File:Map of Pashto-speaking areas in Afghanistan and Pakistan.svg. It looks alright in my browser, as well as the one other program I checked. However, when I upload it here, the automatically generated raster image (which I take will be the one actually displayed in articles where this image will be used), is messed up: look at the text at the bottom. Now, a contributing factor is that the GIS software I used has the annoying habit of exporting text as a series of separate objects, one for each letter. But that gets displayed alright everywhere else but on Commons. Here, the rendering engine apparently decides to ignore the coordinates of those objects and instead bunch them all one on top of the other. Why is this happening, and is there a work-around? I remember something similar happening the last time I had the foolishness to upload a map here (was it last year?) and the tricks I thought had worked then, now didn't. Why is this happening, and is there any work-around? Uanfala (talk) 01:30, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Uanfala: Hi, have you reviewed Help:SVG? If that doesn't help, I suggest you ask at Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 09:06, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for the suggestion. Having had a look at Help:SVG, I'm finding it strange that Wikimedia's handling of such a widely used file format should be so dysfunctional. Anyway, it turns out that my initial fix had, in fact, worked, and it was just that the preview displayed at the top of the file page had continued to be of the previous version. And it continues to display the old version even now: the image at File:Map of Pashto-speaking areas in Afghanistan and Pakistan.svg still has bungled text, even though all the individual-resolution versions linked below are now correct, and the file displays correctly when used on Wikipedia. I've tried a null edit, hoping it would purge any cache that may be getting in the way, but that didn't make a difference. Uanfala (talk) 17:44, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

Question from Largely Forgotten
Yesterday, I uploaded some pictures. I never did this before, so it took awhile to sort it out. But I did get it to work. It took many, many tries to find a username not already taken. They say "Read the FAQ, but I have a well-developed ability to get questions which are NOT frequently asked, I guess." Run into malfunctions that are not covered. Some such.
The last batch of pix I tried, last night, didn't work. I went through all the steps - several times - and when I clicked "publish files" nothing happened. Rebooted a couple times, even. Gave up for the night.
This morning? Same thing. Except now the websites for National Register of Historic Properties is simply not working 404 error. Ditto on the National Park Service. There's other ways to get the numbers, and I've tried again today. But nothing. Same problem.
This particular location does not yet have its own wiki page. There is one other picture of the location up, so it shouldn't be impossible.
Link, I'm trying to do Willow Creek Park, the last one on the list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Prowers_County,_Colorado
Here's one I did yesterday which came out OK, just to show I'm not 100% incompetent:
Anyhow, I'm posting a question. But I think I'm lost in a cave or a labyrinth. No one will notice and there will be no replies.
I have no idea what to do about this. I guess I'll try a different location which actually has a wiki page. Maybe that will help.
But WTF is up with NPS and National Historic sites being dead as a doornail?
Wish me luck. Tilting at windmills with no one to help. Sigh.
I guess I can try a different browser, too.
Sigh. It would be lovely to interact with someone who knows what's up, but apparently that's not an option. Or at least I have not found it.
Sigh.
I just posted a question. But I cannot find it. I see other people's questions, some with replies. I put mine up, I thought. But it has vanished.
I just wanted to post some pictures. Do I have to take a three-month course to figure the place out well enough to post some pictures of National Register of Historic Places for this month's contest? But the contest only lasts one month.
I guess this question will disappear, too, so I kind of wonder why I am bothering.
My username is "Largely Forgotten", which took a few hours until I could find which was not already taken. Maybe you reject questions without names. But if I'm logged it, wouldn't it show automatically that I posted it?
I post another question. It disappears. I have no idea how to get any answers.
Why do you make it so impenetrable? Do you really want me to post pictures, or do you only want to make me burn up a couple days of time with little but frustration as a result.
I tried clicking for "Live Chat" - that doesn't help either. It's a place where I can potentially get assistance in getting this place to work? But NO! I have to sign up for a totally different system and figure out how that works before I can expect any answers as to why I suddenly can't upload pictures any more, after successfully uploading a couple dozen? Then it quit? I can't find those pictures I uploaded either, so maybe they disappeared, too.
This photo contest is a wonderful way to waste time and get frustrated it is starting to look like. No I'm not going to create an account on a totally different unfamiliar system.
Very frustrating! Are you sure you are actually seeking picture uploads? Starting to wonder. You sure don't make it easy.
"Largely Forgotten", a screen name it took a long time to find. That's who is posting this.
How will I ever know if anyone ever replies? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Largely Forgotten (talk • contribs)
Is there actually any help? I have posted many questions. I do not even know where they went. How could I find any answers if I do not know where the questions go?
I only signed up yesterday. To upload photos for the contest. Worked OK for awhile. Now won't work. Many hours wasted trying to figure out what's wrong. No idea how to get answers.
I even tried the livechat but it called me a spammer within seconds of trying to post something. Under a username I never heard of. Dead end.
This shouldn't be so hard, people. Room for improvement.

- @Largely Forgotten: I can't even find the question in there, or maybe I should say I can find a dozen questions, mostly out of the scope of this page. Would you please try to ask a small number of questions, identified as such, in maybe 100 words or less for each question? - Jmabel ! talk 18:38, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
Nothing will upload for the picture contest, dagnabbit!
I posted before. I don't know where the questions go, or how to know if I get any replies or suggestions. But I cannot get pictures to upload for this month's photo contest.
Mind you, I successfully put up about 40 yesterday, and then it quit. Maybe it's just the upload wizard? I put up about 40 pictures yesterday. But the Upload Wizard goes through everything, then "Publish Files" doesn't work. No error message, no nothing. As if I never clicked on anything.
After posted questions, and then not knowing where they went, I tried the live chat. I learned that the uploads, because they include the NRHP #, also do an interaction with the National Register of Historic Places website. That website has been down this morning. I found other places to locate the right number for the uploads. But maybe that's not enough.
The nice person on the chat tried to help, but it's possible the problem is with NRHP, not fixable from this end. Tried all kinds of reboots, clearing cache, more than one browser. At one point, I was able to upload one picture during that chat, which was nice. Not exactly a fix, but one at a time is something. I said "thanks!" and went on my way. But now I cannot even get a single picture to upload, nevermind the multiples.
Is anybody else having this problem? Does anybody ever read these questions? Are there ever any responses? Am I wasting my time? Yesterday, I uploaded most of the pictures on this page:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2020_in_Colorado
Today? Except for a couple I got up one at a time, nothing. Am I the only one experiencing this? Has anybody else noticed it? Is anybody even posting pictures now? Kinda has a negative impact on the contest, eh?

Post office murals were JUST FINE for that page. But I post pictures including a Post Office mural as part of the picture and some (adjective redacted) person deletes them during the night while I was sleeping. Calls it a "copyright infringement"
THESE WORKS OF ART ARE PUBLIC DOMAIN
I got an account the day before yesterday. My specific purpose was to post pictures for the Historic Places contest.
I wake up this morning to find someone marked some for deletion. I can't figure out how to comment or discuss, being brand new. I wanted to discuss the matter.
(I am forbidden to say who did it, apparently that is considered abuse.)
But (username redacted) moves quickly, and my pictures were already deleted. Within hours, while I was sleeping. I did not get a chance to defend my work.
I could not figure out how to respond when the email said to go there to "discuss."
I didn't know how to comment there, so I thought I'd comment on the picture directly, to explain why (username redacted) was DEAD WRONG about the copyright.
So I went to the page with my uploads, to find the pictures and put an explanation there. They were ALREADY GONE.
The Post Office Murals are found all over the country. They were placed in newly built post offices, and already existing post offices. The work was paid for by taxpayer monies and were public domain from the first day they were created.
The objection that the artist only died in 1962 is simply wrong. And I have been treated poorly that they were removed without even having a chance to discuss it.
I don't know how to comment on the notice that was sent to me by an algorithm. And I don't know any way to to send a message to (username redacted) who played executioner without so much as a single appeal.
(username redacted), why don't you come out of the shadows and defend yourself for killing my photos of public domain artwork. Created by government jobs program during the Great Depression.
(username redacted), you are ignorant on this point. I do not appreciate my work being vanquished during the dark of night.
(username redacted), I do not appreciate having no chance to defend myself.
(username redacted), you were DEAD WRONG to delete pictures that are in the public domain.
(username redacted), how about having the decency to have a little discussion about this before you eliminated my contributions.
(username redacted), it's a lousy way to treat anyone. Inexcusable with a brand new user.
(username redacted), just because I am a new user, it does not mean you know better than I.
(username redacted), you owe me an apology and those pictures should be undeleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Largely Forgotten (talk • contribs)

System is not allowing upload of correct copywritten image for Cover art for DISCO DUCK page
Good day. The image currently displayed as the cover art on the Wikipedia page for DISCO DUCK is inaccurate. It is not a copywritten image released by RSO nor by Rick Dees, writer of the album.
I am seeking to remedy this by uploading the correct copywritten image, of which I, Rick Dees, own by virtue of my label DEES LITE MUSIC. I now own the publishing for DISCO DUCK as well as for all tracks on this album and am attempting to update the DISCO DUCK page to reflect correct information.
The image I seek to replace as this cover image is:
File name: Rick Dees and His Cast Of Idiots - DISCO DUCK (Vinyl 1976) Official Album Cover.jpg
Description: Cover art of "Rick Dees and His Cast Of Idiots - The Original DISCO DUCK" (Vinyl) © Copyright 1977 RSO Records Inc.
The system is not allowing upload of the image, stating that it does not meet with Wikipedia standards. Trying to click the link for reference, the link is now invalid (page removed).
HELP! Certainly welcome assistance to resolve this as after numerous tries the Wikipedia BOT is now seeing this action of attempting to upload the image as abuse.
Thank you.
Rick Dees — Preceding unsigned comment added by OfficialRickDees (talk • contribs) 22:43, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
- @OfficialRickDees: Long story short: since the image in question is previously published, you will probably have to go through the process described at COM:OTRS to send email to establish that you are the copyright-holder and that you are granting a particular free license. Also, after that is sorted out, when you do upload, (1) use Special:UploadWizard on Commons rather than trying a cross-wiki upload and (2) please provide the highest-resolution image available. Thanks!

I work on Artist Management company and it said has been marked as a possible copyright violation
I just upload photos for some Indonesian artists, iqbaal ramadhan.jpeg. while the legal original photo comes from my company. how it can be possible copyright violation while my company is the owner of the copyright of the photo I uploaded?
can you give me direction to handle this? I'm quite new with Wikipedia / Wikimedia.
- Hi Randykamil89,
- You point out that the copyright is from your company not yours.
- So, you uploading here, without we having a clear declaration of your company can be problematic.
- The proper way to validate your upload is via Commons:OTRS, pleas check there, and if there is some remaining question, you can please can back.
- -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 11:46, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Randykamil89: Or, perhaps more easily, if you indicate the relevant license where the photos appear on your company's web site, you can cite that as a source. OTRS can be a bit cumbersome. - Jmabel ! talk 15:47, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Linking to other websites
How can my work or file be linked to other websites like English Wikipedia or other websites for greater accessibility to readers/viewers? Herbert Mhangami — Preceding unsigned comment added by Herbert Mhangami (talk • contribs) 14:25, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Herbert Mhangami: I may not understand the question, perhaps you could reword it more clearly. If you are not a native English speaker, maybe you can be clearer in a different language, because I can't see how linking to a website provides accessibility.
- To link to a different site, you can just use the URL, or you can use the syntax caption for link to produce caption for link. Within the world of Commons and its sister projects you can use links like :en:Fish to produce en:Fish or swimming things to produce swimming things. That latter works reciprocally to link to commons, e.g. :commons:Commons:Help desk.
- If what you mean is how to use your file in a wikipedia article, the most common syntax is , but there are quite a few other ways to do that, depending what exactly you mean to do. See en:Wikipedia:Extended image syntax. - Jmabel ! talk 15:46, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
Upload rotates my image 90 degrees
I am trying to upload my first image to Wikimedia. The JPG file is correctly oriented as displayed when I open it with the Windows Photo viewer, but the upload wizard rotates it 90 degrees clockwise. If I rotate the image in the file 270 degrees to anticipate the rotation that occurs during the upload (which should result in correct orientation) or to any other orientation, it is uploaded unchanged. I rotate it back to its correct orientation and it uploads rotated 90 degrees CW. What's going on? - As you have no uploads here, I wonder what you are talking about. --Túrelio (talk) 20:43, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
My first question is how to post a reply!! I don't see a "Reply" mechanism, so I'll add my response by editing. Sorry about not signing--I'm new to this forum, but I figured out how to sign. I have no uploads because this was to be my first image upload, and I did not finish it because it was not uploading correctly--who wants a sideways photo? I tried to explain the problem in my post, but I'll try again: The image file came out rotated 90 degrees clockwise in the uploading process. It was correctly oriented before uploading, but the uploaded image was rotated 90 degrees CW. When I tried to anticipate the change by rotating the image in the file 90 degrees CCW before uploading so it would come out upright when the uploader rotated it 90 degrees CW, it came out unchanged--still 90 degrees CCW--no rotation in uploading. I rotated it back to its correct orientation and tried again, but it came out rotated 90 degrees CW. There must be a way, because all of the images I see in Wikipedia are oriented correctly.Edclop (talk) 21:27, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, our software is designed for an encyclopedia, not a social network, which is what these forums are. I have seen the rotation problem and it seems to be cause by differences in how different software handles rotations. Some systems rearrange the bits; others leave a command inside the file which other sotware fails to understand. The solution I have found is to finish the upload, click the picture, and click the rotate link. Tell it how many degrees, and a few hours later it happens. Clumsy, but it works for me. copyright question for low resolution mural picture
Is this https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Soul_of_Portland_mural_at_O%27Bryant_Park.jpg picture that I took, and used as one of the photos describing the park at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=O%27Bryant_Square&oldid=921484234 an issue on copyright ground? Another editor over at en.wikipedia.org raised concerns about it. It is relatively low in resolution and it just shows that this mural is at the park. Should it have been set to fair use, or is this not usable at all? Graywalls (talk) 23:37, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Graywalls: Almost certainly not appropriate for Commons. Resolution has no bearing on the matter: the mural is the main subject of the photo. You may be allowed to use in in en-wiki (uploading separately there) on a fair-use basis, but only if the mural itself is significantly relevant to the article in question. - Jmabel ! talk 23:54, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
Link to another Commons image leads instead to the Commons main page
Dear experts,
At GM36 Cook, 1986.JPG, I entered a link to another version of the image that I had digitally improved. It's opposite "Other versions", and it reads Trans-Australian train soon after dawn at Cook station, 22 May 1986 -- locomotives GM36 and GM22 at head end.jpg.
As with the link on the first line here, the link connects to the Commons main page, not the actual image page.
What am I doing wrong, please? Cheers, Simon – SCHolar44 (talk) 05:53, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
- @SCHolar44: Hi, and welcome. "c:" is the interwiki for Commons, so that's why you are getting the Commons main page. The correct file link syntax is ":File:", as in ":File:GM36 Cook, 1986.JPG" to form "File:GM36 Cook, 1986.JPG". You could also have used "GM36 Cook, 1986.JPG" to form "GM36 Cook, 1986.JPG". — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 07:25, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Pictures
How do we know if we are allowed to upload a picture of a person off of the internet? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jasminewriting (talk • contribs) 22:24, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Jasminewriting: Typically, you can't, unless it is explicitly appropriately free-licensed or in the public domain. Examples of the latter include very old pictures (e.g. 19th-century or earlier: PD-old-presumed, published in the U.S. before 1925: PD-US-expired, etc.), works created by an employee of the U.S. government in the course of their work (PD-US-Gov) or one of several other entities that specifically places all of its work in the public domain, etc. Commons accepts only images that are either in the public domain or free-licensed in a way that allows commercial use and derivative works. Most images you will find online are copyrighted and not free-licensed. (In general, if you want to upload images that are not your own original work, you should at least read the linked articles about "public domain" and "appropriately free-licensed".)
- If you can work out who owns the copyright, you may be able to convince them to grant a license, but I suggest that you want to get to where you understand this sort of thing pretty well before you start soliciting permissions from strangers. - Jmabel ! talk 23:52, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello! explain the reason for marking deletion on the page I created.
- @Mikhail35: COM:L/ru. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:13, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
- Cross-posted: The user is asking about why a page he created was deleted, but doesn't say what page. He appears to have two deleted images on Commons: File:Дроздова Елена Юрьевна.jpg and File:Elena Yurievna Drozdova.jpg, which judging by their names depict the same person (and, indeed, they do; as an admin, I looked at them). Both were recently deleted by User:Sealle, who wrote "Insufficient or doubtful author or license; OTRS validation required (F1)". No real indication of why these were considered suspect, though. Sealle, would you care to explain why you think these need OTRS? They don't look inherently suspicious. - Jmabel ! talk 03:16, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: I don't see how COM:L/ru is going to help. Both photos were marked with cc-by-sa-4.0. The question is why Sealle doesn't trust that. - Jmabel ! talk 03:18, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

- Ah, I see; my Russian's not so good, I thought he was asking about images that had already been deleted. That one you marked actually appears to be a different crop of File:Дроздова Елена Юрьевна.jpg. For what it's worth, File:Дроздова Елена Юрьевна.jpg shows quite a bit that is not in File:Елена Дроздова.Москва ,2019.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 03:39, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: So we have various low-resolution crops of an unseen high resolution promotional photo of Russian pianist Elena Drozdova at a Yamaha piano in the Yamaha Art Center, being used to promote her and her performance (and maybe Yamaha) on Russian Wikipedia, here, and on Moscow's website. Thus, I have tagged the remaining photo G10. The article on Russian Wikipedia ru:Дроздова, Елена Юрьевна is a "page" subject to a deletion discussion; if it is deleted, the photo will also qualify for F10. I use Google Translate, but it is not perfect. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 04:33, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
- I don't think a concert pianist needs to be Wikipedia-level notable for us to want a photo on Commons; if there is an F10 argument to be made, we can have that separately. Meanwhile, it does sound like we should go through the COM:OTRS process to validate that the uploader is the copyright-holder, or to have the copyright-holder grant a license. Can someone with better Russian than me explain that to the uploader? - Jmabel ! talk 16:08, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

Hallo,

Hello,
I noticed that the uniform in the picture I uploaded had a purple cast. So today I tried to swap the photo for a revised version of the image, but the current image is always the version with the color cast. Can someone please correct that?

- Anon was perhaps a bit rude about it, anon, but mostly correct - The photo was already shared under a CC-by-sa-4.0 license, so it can continue to be reused under that license. The practice of Wikimedia Commons is to honor deletion requests by uploaders if they are made promptly - within days - but this photo has been here almost 3 and a half years and is used in articles in 2 languages; changing mind on a whim years later is not considered sufficient reason to delete free-licensed useful photos. It's a beautiful photo, thank you! Cheers. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 03:51, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
Lupton family
Hello, this is difficult to do on my phone. Sorry. On the "Lupton family" page on Wikipedia I added a new file in the "Arthur Lupton and daughters" section. The file is of 2 ladies and the photo is black and white. The placement of (left) in the title of the file is wrong. It should say (right). Another tiny mix up with one file and I have clarified copyright issues with another file
1 - Please note that this 1927 file is incorrect regarding its title:
The title SHOULD have the word (left) at the end of the word Lupton and have the word (right) at the end of the word Harewood.
Please note that an email containing details of the permission for this file has been sent in accordance with Commons:OTRS.
Thanks again and please fix. The file is on this wikipedia page - "Lupton family" - 175.32.129.51 03:01, 11 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Srbernadette: You wanted feedback. You aren't logging in and signing all the time, making it difficult to follow what you are trying to do. You are creating new sections here and scattering discussions, rather than replying in existing sections. You aren't identifying photographers (and their dates of death), bylines (and their dates of death), globally unique publication names, dates, pages or columns for stories that are behind paywalls. Here is the file - https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/be/Lady_Mayoress_Elinor_Lupton_%28right%29_with_Princess_Mary_at_Leeds_Art_Gallery.jpg
The photo appeared on page 23 of my book (Author Michael E. Reed ) - https://books.google.com.au/books/about/A_Regal_Yorkshire_Family_Tree.html?id=lN6RzQEACAAJ&redir_esc=y
In my book, the photo was attributed to "Yorkshire Post" so it was either in the paper or one of the paper's photographers took it.
Here is an article from Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer Yorkshire, England 26 March 1943 - https://www.genesreunited.com.au/searchbna/results?memberlastsubclass=none&searchhistorykey=0&keywords=dig%20for%20victory%20lupton%20princess&county=yorkshire%2c%20england&from=1941&to=1945
Do I own the copyright (?) of the photo - the photo was given to me by the book's publisher J.G.K. Nevett with the words "Yorkshire Post 1943" on the back of it.
The photo in its entirety also appears on this site - https://www.picuki.com/media/2350041877456915240
Do I now remove, or can your editors please remove the "warning " currently on the file?

- Dear Jeff G. - I hope we can continue in this "new" section. The UK publication - "Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer" - no longer exists as such.

Please note that the photo itself is not in any of the papers. Srbernadette (talk) 23:37, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

Unable to unblock IP address and change username
Dear moderators and people who care,
Please help me to change the username as I was blocked. My IP is blocked.
Even it's written: You may request a change of name and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions other than promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text Template:Unblock-spamun at the bottom of your talk page.
But I read this text on my talk page and I DO NOT see any place where I could write anything.
Please help! I'm trying to fix it already 3 days! (feeling desperate!)
Also, previously I was working in Sandbox and created a page dedicated to a college, but I can not find that page anywhere now. Where is it? What happened to it?

Could someone help me delete Files in Category:Chengfong Automation?
In Taiwan, we could not take pictures everywhere because a lot of the places don't have FOP. For example, some companies claim that they have legal rights to ownership of the property, so we were not allowed to take pictures, including Chengfong Automation Company. In addition, I also received a verbal warning from Sunny Friend Environmental Technology CO., LTD. and was told, "No pictures here please." Although I am not clear about the law that must be followed for taking pictures, I will find time to seek help from a legal counsel. Manipulating SVG files via CSS/wikitext/etc.
Hi, I wanted to ask if there is a tutorial on how to manipulate SVG files (specifically, SVG elements). For example, File:Upload_protect.svg: I want to change the background color without having to download the file and edit it with inkscape, I rather want to edit it on the wiki. For the sake of clarity, I want to edit blank maps of countries and states (and I wanted to learn how to do this). Godless Raven (talk) 08:27, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

Can't upload my company logo image
Hey, I'm creating my company page on Wikipedia and I'm trying to upload my company logo and the following error showed up that says the following "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. @Ruslik0: my company has the copyright to the logo which and I'm uploading the logo using my company wiki account. Kindly tell me how can I bypass this step? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Petitcode (talk • contribs) 16:58, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Petitcode: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg logos as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You indicated each is your own work. Usually when someone uploads a logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to publish the logo and your permission for it on your website or social media or send them via OTRS. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. See also en:WP:COI. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 17:15, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Hello Jeff, Now I'm confused! 1- what kind of image I should upload to the info box if I'm not allowed to upload my company logo 2- if I directly use upload wizard will I be able to upload the same image which is my company logo? Thanks in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Petitcode (talk • contribs) 17:51, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
- There are two possibilities on uploading the logo. (1) If it is either simple enough to be ineligible for copyright, or you are willing to free-license the copyright, you can upload it here to Commons with an appropriate choice of license, and use the Trademark tag. Either you can indicate the free-licensing of the logo on the company's own website or you can go through the COM:OTRS process. Use Special:UploadWizard directly on Commons; don't do a cross-wiki upload. (2) You can upload it as a non-free logo directly on the English-language Wikipedia, and leave Commons out of the matter entirely. See en:Template:Non-free_logo. - Jmabel ! talk 01:09, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi :@Jeff G.: can Amanat send an email to Wikimedia first? like he did before? and this is not a copyright holder peizhigang it is a chinese made camera metadata This picture https://www.cokestudio.com.pk/season10/amanat-ali.html is of him, it is a free license without copyright protection, can i take the permission from the Artist to use this? as he is a coke studio singer.
- That page has "© COKE STUDIO PAKISTAN 2017. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED." right there, I see no indication of a free license. The copyright holder would need to give permission, which might be the artist, but more likely is either the studio or the photographer. --rimshottalk 22:39, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
Hi :@Rimshot: No actually this is written all over the place on the website for season 10 only, I have asked from him and he said Coke Studio is not a copyright holder and only the Artist is, i see no metadata or copyright holder text in the image. If Wikimedia thinks that this image is fine i can let the Artist know to send the mail to permissions-common and grant the right to use this image if that is ok.
I have uploaded the image here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amanat_Ali_Coke_Studio.png and am letting the artist know to send an email to permissions common and grant me the right to upload the image. --CGOV (talk) 06:27, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi administrators, the author has sent an email to Wikipedia team and also here is the link of Flickr https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amanat_Ali_Singer.jpg this file was released under no copyright protection as it is already verified by the bot so can someone let me know why the editor reverted to my edit on the Wikipedia page and removed the picture? By the way, I reverted to his edit. can the Wikipedia team confirm that the picture i am using from flickr is fine?
--CGOV (talk) 15:46, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
- @CGOV: I have no idea what you might mean by "Wikipedia team". Was it sent to permissions-commonswikimedia.org or to someone else? Does it specify a license?
- The linked Flickr page has a "Public Domain Mark" which, quite honestly, makes no sense in this context. On what basis would this image be in the public domain? Keep in mind, a "Public Domain Mark" is just a statement that the image is in the public domain (which it almost certainly is not, given the statement elsewhere of "all rights reserved"). It is not like granting a CC-0 license, which would be a waiver of rights by the copyright-holder.
- Also, that is on the Flickr account of the subject of the photo, who is unlikely to hold the copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 00:41, 14 October 2020 (UTC)
- Also, you address your remark to "administrators". I can't think of any particular reason you'd need to deal with administrators as such here, and I happen to be one, but if you specifically wish to address administrators, then the help desk is not the best choice; you would do better at Commons:Administrators noticeboard. But, again, I don't see anything here specifically requiring administrator attention, this seems like a straightforward matter of needing permission from the copyright-holder. - Jmabel ! talk 00:40, 14 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Hi not administrators but volunteers and yes Amanat Ali has sent an email to permissions-common and sent the email template and permission to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amanat_Ali.jpg. The copyright holder sent one email on Saturday but received no response from the Wikimedia team.

Photo Contest Submission Question
Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my question.
Perhaps I'm uploading photos improperly to the commons.
I have been submitting photos for the October, photo competition. Sometimes I use the "Open Street Maps" (https://wlm-maps.toolforge.org/#19/49.29116/-122.84386) tool in order to upload the photos. After uploading the photos I see my contributions (https://guc.toolforge.org/?by=date&user=JJGTCA), on this page. From what I understand the green monument tag on the "Open Street Maps" is supposed to turn red after a photo is submitted.
It seems like none of the monument photos that I have taken and submitted have turned the tags from red to green.
Here is an example. On this list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_historic_places_in_the_Greater_Vancouver_Regional_District) monument 2586 appears to not have a picture. This absence is confirmed on the "Open Street Maps" (https://wlm-maps.toolforge.org/#19/49.29116/-122.84386). But I have uploaded a picture (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GRO2_JJGTCA.jpg) of monument 2586.
Is it possible that I'm being impatient, or not uploading files properly?
Thank you for your consideration. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JJGTCA (talk • contribs) 06:23, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for your response Jmabel, but I'm still lost on what I need to do in order to submit the photo https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GRO2_JJGTCA.jpg that I have already uploaded to the commons to this list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_historic_places_in_the_Greater_Vancouver_Regional_District monument 2586. Suggestions would be appreciated. JJGTCA (talk) 03:41, 15 October 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by JJGTCA (talk • contribs)
- @JJGTCA: I could aim you at help pages, but probably simpler:
- Open en:List of historic places in the Greater Vancouver Regional District to edit the wikitext ("Source editing" not the WYSIWIG "visual editing"). If you use "visual editing" by default, you can change this temporarily with the dropdown from the little pencil icon at upper right.)
- Look at how the many images there are referenced to be transcluded on the many lines there that have images.
- Do this one in an exactly parallel manner.
- I'm sure there must also be a way to do it in "visual editing" but as a 17-year Wikimedian, I wouldn't offhand know what that way is! (If someone else happens to know, please chime in.)
- Please try that; if you can't get it to work, let me know & I'll do this one for you. - Jmabel ! talk 15:52, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Thank you for your continued assistance. I understand now that we personally aggregate content on lists. I sort of assumed there would be a bot that would do it for me. I'll pester the photo competition help page on how to edit their "open street maps" labels. JJGTCA (talk) 01:09, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Hence, I am writing to request for these 3 to be deleted first. Reason being are as follows::
Upload No 1 & 2: The titles are not written properly. it should be Wilson_Wang.pdf Upload No 3: I would like to add the chinese version of this booklet, together with this pdf.

File #1 contained a scan of a booklet from 1949, but by several named author. Image #2, a scan of a newspaper-article might still be in copyright. File #3, contained not only a scan of a booklet from 1949, but also a number of photographies. Why are congressional photos not considered public? They ARE public.
Why can't I upload a photo of my Uncle Ed Devitt, a MN Congressman during the 1940s? His congressional photo is in the public record, but of course Wikipedia just assumes it is stolen copyright if I did not personally take the photo. I am merely trying to upload a photo of Congressman Devitt on his Wiki page, which has never had any photos at all. Why is this so hard to do? I don't understand what the problem is. Obviously an official photo of a former federal district judge and congressman is public domain. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kl3054 (talk • contribs) 15:32, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Kl3054: "In the public record" and "public domain" are two entirely different matters. Was the photo taken by an employee of the U.S. government in the course of that person's duties? If so you can use the PD tag PD-USGov. - Jmabel ! talk 16:05, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, public record is not the same as public domain. Only works by officers of the federal government made during their course of duty or those commissioned by the federal government are in the public domain. Works by state officials and those commissioned by them are not. Thus the image of your uncle is of public record, anyone can request to look at it at the MN state archive. But it is not in the public domain, meaning the photographer or his or her heir, may still own the copyright unless the photographer died before January 1, 1950. Sorry, but that's the way it is. --h-stt !? 16:08, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Maintaining source link and authenticity when photo format needs 3rd-party format conversion
On the Smithsonian website (https://library.si.edu/subjects/bonkei) I found a source of good-quality images from an old Japanese book of potential value to the WP Saikei article. The Smithsonian states that the work is unprotected by any current copyright (it's 150-200 years old, apparently outside current human copyright bickering), so I am not concerned about the basic right to copy an image into the Commons and thence the Saikei article. I do have questions about attribution of images that cannot be used on WC in the format the original web source presents them.
The situation appears to be as follows: The Smithsonian site has presented these images in a format WC does not directly support (file extension JP2, the JPEG2000 image file format). Anyone with a PC and some utility software can convert the JP2 format to a WC-accepted format like JPG (so I've been told). Very brief forum reviews suggest that occaionally metadata might be modified (e.g., adding product branding info for a shareware converter) or lost (e.g., misconfiguring the format conversion in GIMP) in problem cases.
My main concern is how to protect the legitimacy and authenticity of the converted Smithsonian image. If I download and locally convert a JP2 file from the Smithsonian site in aid of uploading it to WC and eventually Saikei, how can I do the best job?
[1] Does WC accept files like this, available at an authoritative source online but digitally reprocessed and uploaded by a low-authority source?
[2] If the converted JP2 image is acceptable to WC in principle, what elements of the original (e.g., file metadata, base resolution, level of compression) must be preserved to maintain an adequate WC-defined level of authenticity?
[3] Once uploaded, how would a modified image file that had followed this conversion path maintain the "chain of custody" linking it to the original image on the Smithsonian site? What is a trustworthy way for an interested WC user to follow from a particular reprocessed image to the original source file?
[4] I can manually add attribution and source info when an image is uploaded to WC. Are there other WC-recommended practices (e.g., how to name the processed image(s), necessity of naming the conversion software used) that improve the usefulness of these converted images?
Thank you for any help you can provide. Sahara110 (talk) 17:52, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
- Sahara110 Sounds like a great idea! There is no problem with reprocessing the images this way in order to upload them. Nothing bad is going to happen if the files aren't converted in a specific fashion or are missing some data that couldn't be converted. You'll simply want to add a link back to the original source in the "source" row of the file's description text - then anyone can easily follow that link to get the original image. That said, you should try to preserve as much metadata and quality as you reasonably can. I haven't done this type of conversion myself, but perhaps some other user will have recommendations for software that does the conversion well.
- A good name should simply describe what the image depicts. I'm sure you know more about that than me, but I would probably use something like e.g. File:Senkeiban zushiki v. 1 (front cover).jpg and File:Senkeiban zushiki v. 1 (page 5/6).jpg. It's not necessary to name the software used, but there may be a corresponding template you can insert if you wish, such as Processed with GIMP. Just be sure to include a description, the original date of publication, the source link, and the name of the creator/author - and add categories. – BMacZero (🗩) 21:43, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
- BMacZero Thank you for an excellent answer. I'll drop a note here if I am successful at getting things done. Sahara110 (talk) 21:49, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Upload Wizard seems to be broken
On the 2nd page of the Upload Wizard it won't generate the text boxes for title, Description, Date, and Categories, etc. It's been like that for the past 7 hours. Deleted all cookies and started fresh but the results are identical in Windows Firefox 81.0 and Vivaldi 3.1.1929.45 (Stable channel) (64-bit).
I have a screenshot of the results posted at imagesharing. I can't upload it here either. All upload links lead to the Wizard. — Ineuw talk 05:55, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Apparent bug
Since yesterday, when trying to upload public domain image files, using the wizard, I've encountered a glitch. After uploading the file and specifying why it's in the public domain, I am led as usual to the Describe page where I must provide an image title, an optional caption and a description. That's where the problem is:-
The text is squeezed horizontally and the boxes you are supposed to fill in are only one character wide; the fields just can't be filled in. Thus, the entire upload process is frustrated.
I have tried it several times with two different images and always get the same glitch.
I have, BTW, uploaded hundreds of public domain images over the years and never had this problem before. I first encountered it on October 14, 2020.Ttocserp (talk) 09:53, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Please make description language picking more simple by offering personified shortlists
Concerning the new upload form. Where could I post a request to store my top 3 language preferences in user preferences, as so not to have to choose from hundreds of languages in every step of describing uploads? I mean even a cookie could know my 3 preferred languages, which are the only possible languages for me. (suggested languages could be detected by country of isp, language of browser plus english as a standard, or by a learning engine that can detect a pattern and remember it for a session, or for a day or longer (based upon consent). I'm not sure how to install the Babel extention to get my 3 preferred languages to the top of the dropdown list. Peli (talk) 00:20, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Help!
I took pictures and tried to submit the best seven ones on October 14, 2020. When I hit the submit button, I was told to include a date. I had already included a date for each photo, but I went back and put in a date again. Again I was told to submit a date. I did this numerous times and eventually had to give up since all I can do is include a date when I am supposed to do so. So now where am I? I think I am not submitter, yet I can't submit even though I have already submitted using the correct date. Please tell me what I must do next to have my pictures entered into the contest. The pictures are of the Hollywood & Western Building , which Wikipedia says is National Registered Historic Building as well it should be.

- @咽頭べさ: Several separate issues here:
- For any image that was previously published, either in print or on the web, if the original publication doesn't indicate the relevant free license you really need to go through the COM:OTRS process to establish that you are the copyright-holder and are granting a license.
- File:Arahan Monk in Burmese.jpg is a derivative work: it is a photograph of a work of art. We need to also know the copyright status of the work of art.
- File:Mon Buddhism.gif @Ninjastrikers: you tagged this as derivative work, what are you saying it derives from? 咽頭べさ claims to be the author. @咽頭べさ: again, the OTRS process would be a good way to clarify this.
- File:Luangpho Uttama Mon people Monk.jpg is a photograph of a framed photograph. We would almost certainly need permission from the photographer of the original photograph (and possibly even the frame itself is complex enough to have its own copyright). - Jmabel ! talk 18:08, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

- @Osric the Brash: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your website or social media or send permission via OTRS. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 04:13, 18 October 2020 (UTC)

Deletions
I have never had as many problems as now in Commons and I do not have time to verify or do parallel research work aside from maintaining +2200 articles on Wikipedia. None of them are visible on Google by other sources! Therefore, kindly asking someone to help by adapting the images, because I am not very knowledgeable with Commons nor do I have time for this, however I hereby authorize Commons to delete all the images uploaded by me during these +15 years. I'm so sorry for the project, but there are things that I am no longer willing to endure. Thank you very much for your attention. Stay safe and good luck.--Gilwellian (talk) 17:59, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
- Forget it. I'm out. Feel free to do whatever you want. It is not my business anyway. What a waste of time and years! This is very, very frustrating. Can you give me a hint of how to delete my profile and not bother you anymore? Everybody wins. --Gilwellian (talk) 18:49, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Gilwellian: You can blank your user page, if you like. In general, images will be deleted only if there is a specific reason to delete them (e.g. out of scope, copyright violation). Unless you give some indication what sort of problems you've had, there is no way anyone can help solve them, but it sounds like you don't want that help, anyway. We
- We have, of course, no more control over what Google does than you do.
- For what it's worth: I looked at some of the images of yours that have been challenged, such as File:Scout Organization of Ardeal.jpg: I don't see how that can be both your own work and an official symbol of the organization; I can see why someone would question that. Or for File:Guerrero semigaliano siglo XIII.jpg: the linked source page makes no mention of the picture in question, so I also don't see the basis for the claimed license. I would think that this would have called for either a more specific link demonstrating that the license is valid, or for going through the OTRS process if there is no online evidence of that. So, looking at this couple of examples, it looks like the issues that have been raised are reasonable.
- If you are interested in working these through, I (and I'm sure others) would be willing to work with you on it, but if you'd rather just leave then obviously you are free to do so. - Jmabel ! talk 05:41, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Since almost all of my contributions to Commons followed the same steps, there is no reason to continue the agony. I may add the G7 template to all my files, in fact I have already contacted Valeria Domínguez so that all subsequent steps go down that path, delete a few hundred files that I cannot prove that are mine. This will be my last contribution. So if everyone do the same the 66 million files would be reduced to 6 in the best of cases and being optimistic. I firmly believe that something is being done wrong at Commons, after many years I noticed that things are getting worse. It is not fair what some of you are doing. The project is missing very good users ever since. About collaborations, in all those years very few users have offered to help, I have only received templates and file deletions after a few days, no more words, no questions such as "let's see if I can help", just a death sentence. These are unilateral measures that to say the truth in front of such, a very little or nothing we can do. This harm Commons and furthermore, in extension, the Wikipedia project. A pity. - @Leereuben: I am guessing this is about File:London Lions.jpg, except that isn't deleted, it is the subject of a discussion about whether to delete, Commons:Deletion requests/File:London Lions.jpg, in which you should certainly participate.
- You uploaded the logo saying it is your "own work" and that you are offering a CC-0 license. Do I understand that you are saying you designed the logo, you own the copyright (that is, you never signed copyright over to the club), and you intend to offer a CC-0 license? Or did you say something you didn't mean to say?
- Also, a virtually identical logo is on en-wiki at en:File:London Lions F.C. logo.png described as a non-free logo coming from www.londonlions.com/images/logo.png (a broken link, by the way). - Jmabel ! talk 22:04, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Need help to investigate and/or renew a license ticket
Hi, I want to include more information about variants of the w:Ruger SR1911 pistol model. And would like to include images of each variant. So I need help from some one with access to the ticket content for

which uses the OTRS ticket #2012121010010568
Currently w:Ruger have the following SR1911 variants:
- FULL-SIZE - covered by the mentioned ticket
- TARGET - see my questions below
- COMMANDER-STYLE - see my questions below
- OFFICER-STYLE - see my questions below
- COMPETITION - see my questions below
So, I have two questions:
- does the existing ticket allow to upload a single picture of each variant ?
- if not, could some one ask Ruger to renew the existing ticket to do so ?
By the way, the "source" currently listed in the ticket is out of date - this URL The current page for w:Ruger SR1911 variants is - this URL

NZR Locomotives listed then maliciously deleted on Wiki
Hello, everyone. I have logged in on a new account as I couldnt remember my old account. What I want to know is how do I resurect the tables of locoomotives that were put on many wiki pages. A prime example is the NZR A class (1873) which had a very detailed table of locomotives both in use, under overhaul, stored and scrapped. Most if not all of the locomotive pages pertaining to New Zealand Railways were maliciously deleted. To most, this was a handy source of information... but not anymore! How can one resurect history and stop nasty people deleting such information? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 17train (talk • contribs)
- I don't think that file has ever existed. Perhaps if you look through Category:NZR A class (1873) and en:NZR A class (1873) you can find something you edited previously and then find your old account name by looking at the page history. --ghouston (talk) 05:48, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Escacs d'amor (1r).jpg and File:Escacs d'amor (1v).jpg
I have uploaded two files from here and here respectively. Each file is a modern digital reproduction of a page from a 1914 publication by Ramon Miquel i Planas (d. 1950), showing a photograph of a 1470s manuscript. The repository marks it as in the public domain: “Domini públic. En enllaços, reproduccions o altres usos d'aquest recurs citeu la font "Biblioteca de Catalunya": http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/mark/1.0/” [Public domain. In links, reproductions or other uses of this resource cite the source "Biblioteca de Catalunya"] and “Rights: The Public Domain Mark (PDM): http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/mark/1.0/”. I would like to know what's the aproppiate copyright tag. Thanks. --MrPotato1010 (talk) 21:00, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- You need to ensure that the work is free to use in both Spain and in the United States. The "Public Domain" mark can be helpful, but in this case we do not need to make use of it. WE have two distinct copyright problems ot look at - the copyright of the original author (1470's) and the copyright of the photographer (1914). The copyright of the original author has definitely expired, so you need to use the tags "{PD-old-70" (in respect of Spain) and "PD-1996" in respect of the US.. In Spain, copyright of photographs expires after 25 years, so you need to use the tag "PD-Spain-photo" and the tag "PD-US" in respect of the photograph. I suggest that you format your licencing using the follwoing after the heading "Licencing":
Manuscript
Licencing in respect of the manuscript itself (1470's) PD-old-70 PD-1996
Photograph
Licencing in respect of the photpgraph (1914). Note that in the US, copyright of photographs that "mechanical copies" of other documents are vested in the original document, not the photograph (See en:Derivative_work#Originality_requirement). PD-Spain-photo PD-US

Replacing accidentally subst'ed Template:OTRS from multiple files
I did a bulk upload of 90+ images via Pattypan, and accidentally put instead of . (Yeah, d'oh). So I want to clear up the mess I made, which consists of subst'ed OTRS templates without an ID. I'm a user of VisualFileChange and familiar with regular expressions. So it looks like I should match the area that begins photo license = {{#switch:1 and ends |other_versions = and replace it with photo license = |other_versions =, and make similar changes further down. This involves replacing areas with comment tags, so I've switched off "preserve comments" and enabled regular expression mode, but I can't get my regular expression to match the block of text. Any help welcome, MartinPoulter (talk) 17:29, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- @MartinPoulter: If the block of text is identical on all of them -- I think it should be -- don't use regexes.
- If it us not identical, could could you be more specific about how they differ? Or could you at least point at a particular page that is an example of what you are trying to work on? This is difficult to answer in the abstract.
- Also, I'm not sure "subst" will work right with VFC, you may need to do this in two steps. - Jmabel ! talk 17:46, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Jmabel, an example is File:Khalili_Collection_Enamels_of_the_World_CHI527.jpg It looks like the text is the same for all files (all of which are in Category:Khalili Collection of Enamels of the World) but it's a big complicated block of code. Subst does seem to work with VFC: I've used it to add the OP template at the top of that page in the hope it won't be speedy-deleted. There is a block of text within the photo license field of the Art photo template, and another block of text under the Licensing heading. MartinPoulter (talk) 18:02, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- This is now resolved: I just pasted in the text to be deleted rather than trying to capture it with a regular expression. MartinPoulter (talk) 11:51, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

- @Gerasimovev: I'm guessing "ТИУ" is Tyumen industrial University.
- "давно уже не принадлежат никому конкретному": that doesn't make sense. Unless they are from the 1930s or earlier, they are almost certainly copyrighted, and even back to 1900 they might be. Either the University actually owns the copyright or it doesn't. If it does, and you are authorized to represent them (or can get someone who is) you can go thro/ruugh the process described at COM:OTRS or COM:OTRS. Otherwise, if they are copyrighted byt it is not clear who owns the copyright, then the pictures can't be used on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 22:56, 23 October 2020 (UTC)

This is my first time and I don't understand anything, so let me ask you a question. (I only understand Japanese. Sumimasen)
I am doing a kimono remake in Sannomiya, Kobe. It is a job to change kimono into clothes. Kimono is now being introduced all over the world and I think you are interested in it. However, even Japanese people cannot wear it by themselves, so I would like you to change it into clothes and wear it. However, I do not have the opportunity to introduce it to foreigners. If possible, I thought that I would like to see the pictures here, so I consulted. I would like you to know that there is a company in Kobe that does this kind of thing. In addition, we have devised a "obi belt" for kimono fabric and registered it as a "utility model". It is a belt of the belt that you can wear by tightening it on your clothes. I can make various things, but I would like to have a tentative sewing, so I would like to live in Japan, but I don't know where I can introduce you. I'm sorry to ask you for a consultation suddenly, but I would be grateful if you could give me some advice. I look forward to working with you. How can I make a gallery of different images that are all constrained to the same size?
Hi all
I'm working on some documentation and have one small issue that I'm really struggling to find a solution for. Basically I want to create a line of the different Wikimedia project logos that:
- Are all constrained to a 100px x 100px box so they all look 'the same'
- Do not have any kind of background behind them
I've been playing around with galleries and I can't quite work out the right code for it, does anyone know? I could create new version of the images in 100px x 100px ratio but this feels needlessly complicated.
Thanks

Replacing a locator map which was requested to be in a better quality in SVG
I am a total newbie in contribution.
I have seen that the page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arctic_Ocean_-_en.png requested a better picture in a SVG format.
I have made it with the image given from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Module:Location_map/data/Arctic . I have followed closely the official limits according toy the CIA World Factbook and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). Also, I tried to follow the conventions descripted here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Maps/Conventions
Here is my work :
I don't know how or, even, if I should change the initial page. Because the initial image is used in several pages and because I have no experience, I do not want to change myself anything without to know exactly what I should write and edit. It is highly expected that I will make mistakes.
Moreover, when following the locator map conventions, I failed to see any conventions for highlighting offshore territories for hierachic informations; only onshore as countries, regions have a clear convention of colors for hierarchic informations but none for sea and ocean. I just used a darker blue. Quentin Bernard (talk) 17:33, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Quentin Bernard: You would probably do better to post this on the talk page where it was asked for than here. You are really not asking for help in using Commons, which is what this page is about, you are offering something to someone who asked for it, so you need to post this where they will see it. - Jmabel ! talk 17:40, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

- @Jmabel: No one came on the talk page since 2012 and the last edit of the main page is 2018. If I just wait an answer there, it may be probable that no one will answer and I just let my work on my computer forever ? Or maybe I did not understand.Quentin Bernard (talk) 17:55, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: I have already clicked on the Convert to SVG template, but I do no understand what I should do when eading their instructions. I have no knowledge in editing anything. In fact, just three hours ago, I did not know what was a template. The "help page" seems to talk to people who have experience I do not have sadly. Quentin Bernard (talk) 17:55, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Quentin Bernard: "locator map" was added to File:Arctic Ocean - en.png by Karlfk, based on an original addition by someone who is no longer here. Following the advice of that template, I have just replaced it in that file description page with "File:Arctic Ocean SVG.svg" in this edit, added that new template to File:Arctic Ocean-sl.png in this other edit, replaced with that new template to File:Arctic Ocean.png in this third edit, and added other versions to your version in this fourth set of edits. Please be careful replacing the files that currently have labels with your version, some editors might like the labels (in which case, you might want to make SVG versions with labels, at least in English and Slovene). Also, you can find static help with creation of SVG files for use on these projects at Help:SVG, and dynamic help at Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 03:47, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

- @Jeff G.: Thank you to have explained what you have done.Following your example, I will be able to do it myself next time. Just two questions. First, how did you know you should edit File:Arctic Ocean-sl.png ? It is not automatic ? Where I should go to check that (I went on the page but I didn't see those links) ? Second question, you mention the problem of the labels which are missing in other languages; is it not a mistake, then, to have edited this page because I may destroy some vital information used somewhere ? Quentin Bernard (talk) 12:23, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Quentin Bernard: You're welcome. File:Arctic Ocean-sl.png was (and still is) linked (with the older name of namespace 6) as "other_versions=Slovene version: :Image:Arctic Ocean-sl.png" in the wikitext of File:Arctic Ocean - en.png. It was not automatic. A clue was in the name, we generally don't call something "-en" or "- en" unless a preceding name exists. There are only labels in two languages; use in pages that are not in those languages is fair game (subject to the usual possibilities of merciless edits on wikis and edit filters for new users changing images). — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:50, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: For the problem with the labels, I tried to correct that with the template "Location map". On the paper, it is an ideal solution. For example :

. I tried it in my own personal draft user [3] but it seems that does not work inside a Template Vector version available. Should I edit the image's wikipage and manually say "An SVG format exist. Using this code, you can replace the png format by the svg" ? Franco Ziliani Biografia
Buongiorno,
Franco Ziliani? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pamelabertussi (talk • contribs) 08:57, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- (with some help from Google translate -- I speak Spanish, but not Italian...)
- Jmabel ! talk 17:41, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
Is it ok to upload profile pictures from social media? Does it count as fair use or not?
I need to know this because I want to upload a picture for an article I'm writing, but it's from someone's social media profile picture. The person's profile picture I want to upload has a black background with a red cross in the middle. Does it count as fair use? Toad62 (talk) 17:42, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Toad62: With rare exceptions it is not acceptable, and Commons does not allow images to be used on a fair use basis.
- If the picture is simply a black background with a red cross in the middle -- no photo involved -- than that is simple enough to be PD-ineligible. - Jmabel ! talk 17:49, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Does this mean I can upload it? Toad62 (talk) 23:48, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Toad62: Not having seen the image, I don't know. As I said, if it is simply a black background with a red cross in the middle -- no photo involved -- you can use PD-ineligible. But if (for example, and I can't tell from your description) it is a photograph superimposed on a black background with a red cross in the middle, then no. - Jmabel ! talk 23:52, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

A bot has been changing the locations of my uploaded photos because they "don't match the ones stored at SDC". The latest one (Cypress Hills Grasslands.jpg) was moved a distance of 113234 m, from SE Alberta to somewhere in Montana! I've corrected some of them, but I gather from reading some of the links that the bot will just change them back. How can I prevent this? Or should I just delete all location data from the photos? I suppose that no location is better than a wrong location. Georgialh (talk) 01:08, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

In this case, the copyright holder must have published the image under a free license. Is there a particular photo you are thinking of? --rimshottalk 21:31, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
Regarding OTRS permission from photographer
I have reached out to a well-known Indian aviation photographer using Instagram. He has agreed in-principle to let me upload one of his images to commons under a suitable license. What process should I follow to ensure that the image is uploaded to commons?
I have read Commons:OTRS. But, still, I am a bit confused about the exact process that I need to follow.— Vaibhavafro 💬 08:21, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Vaibhavafro: The simplest -- bypassing OTRS -- is if he has a site elsewhere clearly under his control, and he can just indicate the license there.
- The second simplest is if he can use Commons:Wikimedia OTRS release generator to generate a release, then email the resulting release from an email address that is clearly his.
- In either case, remember that we need a specific license and clear identification of what image is involved. - Jmabel ! talk 16:43, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

1. do I need to credit and attribute visually on every still frame that I use? 2. do I attribute in the credit lines at the end of each chapter? 3/ where do I embed the attribute info...in the file name?
Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.57.239.197 (talk • contribs) 07:52, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

Template for WLE winner at sub-country level
Template:WLE finalist or winner image allows to set a file as a winner at worldwide or national level. However, in Ukraine (and maybe in other countries) there are winners at region level. For example, File:Неймовірні заходи сонця на Кінбурнській косі (6).jpg was a 2017 winner in en:Mykolaiv Oblast of Ukraine (see uk:Вікіпедія:Вікі_любить_Землю/Переможці#Переможці_за_областями. Does it make sense to extend the template? --176.36.227.144 06:51, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- In this case you would create an new template. WLE only consideres the top 10 images on the national level as part of the international competition, so it is not ok to use this template for regional winners.--Snaevar (talk) 23:46, 29 October 2020 (UTC)
Structured data for a WLE winner
How to set in Structured Data section that a file took xxx place in the national contest of Wiki Loves Earth. For example, File:Зимові Мармароси.jpg won 9th place in Wiki Loves Earth Ukraine 2017. Some are winners at sub-country level (see above). Some are finalist. Some are just participants etc.
Is it possible to set is automatically by a bot based on the Template:WLE finalist or winner image? Maybe there's a "bot request" page here? --176.36.227.144 07:01, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

Too many notifications despite settings
Hi, could you give me some advice about how to limit hundreds of email notifications after bot edits changing structured data on my photos, please? Neither setting "A daily summary of notifications" nor muting these bot users in my Preferences > Notifications helped – for example, last night I received more than 900 emails after changes by User:SchlurcherBot. --Czeva (talk) 07:22, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- Are you getting email notifications when a file on your watchlist is changed? In your 'User profile', there is an option to turn that off (if this is the issue). I imagine that in time the bots will finish what they doing and it can then be safely turned back on. --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 04:16, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Malcolmxl5: Thank you for the advice. I was hoping to avoid just bot edits because like this, I won't be able to notice other edits on my photos, but you are right that these bot changes won't last forever. --Czeva (talk) 06:32, 29 October 2020 (UTC)
Unauthorized bot activity on my talk page
The Wikimedia Commons Welcome bot posted a message to my talk page after 'seeing me' visit the website. I found this to be an invasion of privacy and thought it was highly disturbing. Where can I go to suggest that the bot not automatically post on user's talk pages (before they make any edits)? Also, I would like the post to be removed and I would not like the bot to interact with my account in the future. How can we make this happen? Sunmarsh (talk) 05:54, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Sunmarsh: It's a welcome bot. You probably won't see it again. Firestar464 (talk) 06:35, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Sunmarsh, the bot is not unauthorized. It was introduced through consensus in 2008. One year ago, we had a proposal to shut the bot down but this was not successful. Any proposals should go through COM:VPP but given that we had just recently a discussion, it is unlikely that another proposal would get much traction. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 08:24, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Sunmarsh: You should be grateful, the post was blanked. 68.194.100.148 14:34, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
Thank you all for your replies. I understand exactly what the bot is and its intended purpose. When I described its activity as unauthorized, I did not mean to imply it was unauthorized by the collective Wikimedia Commons, I meant that it had not received my authorization to generate and post on my talk page. I understand now that the bot is triggered by account creation, which was done automatically and without my explicit knowledge and permission as noted in the user creation log: "04:31, 27 October 2020 User account Sunmarsh was created automatically". I now understand that this is a result of automatic login done using a third party cookie, again an action taken on my behalf without my knowledge and consent. I believe the bot may be operating using a custom setting with regard to global variable
$wgNewUserMessageOnAutoCreate
as outlined at Extension:NewUserMessage. Does anyone know who I can contact regarding changes to the LocalSettings file for the install of the extension? Sunmarsh (talk) 16:25, 27 October 2020 (UTC)- @Sunmarsh: Any change to LocalSettings requires a consensus. You did register yourself for this project on your own volition and you thereby consented to the privacy policy and more generally the terms of use. --AFBorchert (talk) 16:48, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @AFBorchert: - I registered for Wikipedia, not Wikimedia Commons, back in 2008. My Wikimedia Commons account was automatically generated without my explicit permission through the unified login as described at Help:Unified login:
- Additional wikis will be added to the user's login the first time they are visited. For example, a regular user at Commons and German Wikipedia will not automatically login to English Wikibooks, but if that user visits English Wikibooks once while logged in, they will then login to English Wikibooks every time.
- This functionality is not noted anywhere in the Privacy Policy or terms of use. Nor is noted in Wikimedia Foundation's Cookie statement. Sunmarsh (talk) 18:10, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Sunmarsh: Well, not every functionality is documented in full in the Privacy Policy. However, it explicitly tells that “a public log may include the date your account was created on a Wikimedia Site along with the dates that other accounts were created on a Wikimedia Site.” I am sorry that this took you by surprise as we had no single user login in January 2008. But most people are happy that it is so easy to move through the projects thanks to the single user login. I am actively working in four projects all the time and frequently jumping to other projects. I am grateful that I do not have to login to each project individually. But for this to work, a mechanism for automatic account creation is required and this will be logged anyway. The Welcome bot is just hooked to this publically observable event. --AFBorchert (talk) 19:09, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- Comment Of course it is a correct observation that the welcome-bot vote was held far before we got SUL. A solution could be to wait with a message by bot for example until the user has done 10, 5 or even 2 uploads or edits. And I think we can differ between automatic account creation (because of SUL) and new account-creations when accounts get created locally. Ciell (talk) 19:57, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Sunmarsh: Could it be that you forgot being automatically logged in to French Wikipedia courtesy of SUL on the 2nd? Or mediawiki.org on the 8th? Or meta earlier this afternoon? Why are you only picking on us? — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 22:35, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hello, @Jeff G.: You're correct that this isn't the first time an account has been created for me automatically courtesy of SUL. This is just the first time I realized that it happened, and the only reason I even came to realize it was because the welcome message was triggered on account creation, which was triggered as soon as I visited the Commons. I apologize if I came across as accusatory towards you or other editors here who may have read my post, as that was not my intention. --Sunmarsh (talk) 03:16, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

- I think it would be better if the welcome message was posted only once somebody edited on Commons, assuming that this can be detected just as easily. Creating a talk page just for an auto login seems overly aggressive. --ghouston (talk) 00:51, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- I agree with Ghouston. - Jmabel ! talk 01:14, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- I likewise agree with you and found it unfortunate that 1989's proposal did not go through. However, I think that one of the main motivations to keep it configured that way is to provide some help and pointers before the first image is uploaded. This is a major difference to other projects where usually the first edits have less significance. However, I see a disadvantage in welcome bots as they create an unpersonal experience right at the beginning. I think that the welcome experience would be significantly different if someone posts some greeting – perhaps a subst'd template combined with some personal remarks. --AFBorchert (talk) 12:44, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

Joseph Eidelberg Biography
Which would be the best way to publish the following Biography? Joseph Eidelberg (1916- 1985) A commanding Israeli military officer, an engineer, a large corporations general manager, linguist, explorer, historian and an author. Joseph Biography starts at the Russian revolution, his immigration to Israel at age 7 with his family and father who was an injured WW1 Russian soldier, the Israeli war of Independence, Military base commander, managing large corporations such as Timna Copper mines, Dead Sea Work and Israeli Ship Yards. Joseph revolutionary books, are based on years of explorations in Africa and Asia and represent detailed fascinating solutions for two of the most mysterious events in the Jewish History. The first is the mysterious story of Exodos, a desert trip that normally would take a week but lasted 40 years. The second is the mystery of the Ten lost tribes of Israel, which disappeared 2500 years ago and were never found. Joseph's book on these subjects include Bambara (Hebrew, Hamatmid 1972), The Japanese and the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel (English, Gefen, 1980, 2014) and The Biblical Hebrew Origin of the Japanese People (English, Gefen, 2005). In addition the The Japanese and the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel was translated to Japanese and sold in 40,000 copies. Joseph's Theories and discoveries were adopted by several authors. In Japan it is being taught by some Reverends and as a result it won a special TV series based on his discoveries. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Beidelberg (talk • contribs) 17:11, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

Each jpg image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller images, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you made the images yourself, please upload the full-size original of them, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the images, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the copyright holder(s) license them on their websites or social media or send the images and permissions via OTRS with carbon copies to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the images may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. You almost certainly do not need the permission of the museum (see Commons:Reuse of PD-Art photographs), but we do need to make sure the painting itself is free to use. We'll use Commons:Hirtle chart to determine this. – BMacZero (🗩) 01:02, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
Data (dot)map files
Hi,
I use GeoJSON maps on fr:Wikipedia articles, those maps work perfectly well within fr:wiki or external websites, I've discover this format Data:.map, I've tried importing my GeoJSON files and it keeps telling me this :
Error: Parameter "data" must be a valid GeoJSON data object, or an array of GeoJSON objects. If properties field contains title or description, they must be either single line strings without tabs or trailing spaces, or a multi-lingual objects of such strings, e.g. { "en":"String in English", ... }
Is there a way to outpass this warning, as my files are fully working.
Still, the issue may come from "tabs" I suppose, how can I check those ?

@Jeff G.: Not at all, I did it by myself and I'm still encountering many issues, this DATAdotMAP is simply awful to use... Working GeoJSON files wether on fr:Wiki or external websites don't work with it, I didn't find ANY support on this type of file except a really short text on Mediawiki which doesn't help at all.
We can't sort those pages using categories, this tool is great for inter-wiki maps but awful to use. Why can't we just have a DATA:Name(dot)map file with only the raw GeoJSON content in it and another one like File:Name with all the informations on the authors or sources. I think it should solve many issues and makes things far more simplier.
Right now I'm encoutering a new problem (this tool is awful...) I can't modify a GeoJSON file within Commons...
If there is a dedicated chat on this topic I would be glad to discuss it.

Wiki Loves Monuments Submission
I submitted a picture for the contest, but didn't think I did it right, so I submitted another. The second one told me it was successfully submitted for the contest but the first hadn't done so. Is there a way to change which picture I want to submit? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sedrik Spaulding (talk • contribs) 13:13, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Sedrik Spaulding: Hi, and welcome. Both file description pages contain "us-nh", so both are submitted in Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in New Hampshire. Multiple submissions are encouraged. It appears the only problems were a notification failure and a signature failure. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 13:51, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
National Register of Historic Places: updated reference number
After uploading two photos of the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, I found the reference number of Wardenclyffe Laboratory for the National Register of Historic Places: Listed in the National Register – Reference number 100002744.
I had designated the reference number as pending, and would like to update the information. The photos were submitted for the contest Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Margaret57WC (talk • contribs) 14:44, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Why?
I am having problem by download but I do have my Internet work but can't work! — Preceding unsigned comment added by KomBaiA (talk • contribs) 17:37, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
- @KomBaiA: Could you be more specific? Remember, every time you see an image on here, that has been downloaded to your computer, so the question is what exactly isn't working. - Jmabel ! talk 17:44, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
Too long name on Flickr
I was trying to upload this picture on Flickr with the upload wizard. The wizard get stuck on the first step, saying that file name cannot be longer than 240 characters, but it won't let me even reach the step of changing the file name. Is there anyway to get forward with the process? Mbkv717 (talk) 18:07, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Mbkv717: You could download the image from Flickr, rename it on your computer and then upload it here using the old upload form. De728631 (talk) 20:54, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
