[edit]See Commons:Categories for discussion/2018/08/Category:Images from MaxPixel.FreeGreatPicture.com for more information. There are all sourced to a third party domain that takes images from "free" image sites and uploads them to their site so people have to donate to use them. While some of these images are possibly licensed properly without the original URL we can't know for sure. That, and we really don't want to be advertising for people who take free images and then force people to pay for them to use them.

Keep? Maybe I'm missing something, but the only deletion rationale I'm seeing here is that verifying the source takes a pinch of ingenuity and a few extra clicks. It took about 45 seconds to verify that this image came from here and was uploaded before Pixabay changed their license. PCP does not mean that we delete a bunch of images because we can't be bothered to verify whether they're free or not.Whether consumers are poorly enough informed that they will pay for free media doesn't have anything to do with whether the images are free. There are probably lots of website that take images directly from here and try to trick people into paying for them. That doesn't mean we delete our content out of spite. If the content is CC0, then that means you can use it for any purpose, including the purpose of trying to trick people in to paying for something that is free. GMGtalk 15:39, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- This really wasn't out of spite and the insinuation that it is is a little surprising coming from you. I created this since the CfD mentioned in the rationale wanted to delete the images also. That would have been completely out of process so I did this to satisfy the people there. If the images proves to be ok so be it. But once problems with licensing is brought to light the proper thing to do is to have a discussion on whether the images should be kept or not. If it can't be proven that the images are under an acceptable license then the eventual end would be their deletion. If it can be proven then fixing them and striking them from this list above would be great. I've kept DRs open for months and months before while people work through lists of images. There is nothing wrong with doing so in my opinion. A DR is a discussion, nothing more. It doesn't have to end in their removal. The blacklisting of the site in question did have to be done since it wasn't the original site of any images which just causes issues. --Majora (talk) 15:57, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- I wasn't insinuating that this DR in particular was started primarily out of spite. It was a comment on principle and not individuals. Specifically, whether others use free images for nefarious purposes off-wiki is not directly relevant to whether the images are in-scope and properly licensed, which are the only issues that are of any importance for Commons. - Keep. First spot check was CC0; "the specific source we credit requires a couple of annoying clicks" isn't an adequate reason to delete. As an aside, this nomination probably gave the site more traffic than it ever would have received from the existing images hosted from Commons. VQuakr (talk) 17:32, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- Keep if they can be verified. Majora, I'd suggest changing the comment at the top of this page to explain that it's not proposed to just delete all these en masse without checking them, since it appears many or all of them are actually validly licenced. I think it's a good idea to go through and replace the Pixabay ones with the originals, to get rid of the invalid "Copyright by MaxPixel" notice in the EXIF data, as described in Commons:Categories for discussion/2018/08/Category:Images from MaxPixel.FreeGreatPicture.com - maybe you want to copy those instructions here. I've done that for File:Arabic Bread Pita.jpg, struck it from the list, and removed the deletion template. But I didn't add the PBLR template or delete the old MaxPixel version - I don't know if regular users should do that? --IamNotU (talk) 17:39, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- Keep unless there is clear reason that an image was not CC0. The older an image, the better the chance it may have been CC0. File:Duesenberg Alliance Series Joe Walsh - body with Radiator Tremola - viewed from right bottom (2016-10 by obBilder).jpg has a pixabay source from October 2016 and Pixabay was CC0 until January 9, 2019.
In this File:St-Patricks-Day-Downtown-Chicago-River-Chicago-1411272.jpg the specific camera metadata says the copyright is by maxpixel. Same situation with File:Windsurfing Surfer Surf Water Sea Sport Action.jpg and File:Celebration Chinese Lantern Festival.jpg Maybe you should check the images sources and/or metadata before doing a mass DR here?Bad idea: Here File:Arabic-Shells-Dips-Sauces-Dumplings-Appetizers-Vegetables-1626976.jpg The image is from pixabay and it was CC0 but maxpixels put their info in the camera metadata. - 80 images is certainly not a huge list. I've worked through lists with hundreds and hundreds of files. I'll do them myself if no one else will. Again, this was done as a backup in case sources cannot be found. The panicked overreaction to this DR is totally unwarranted. - Comment: I think it's a good idea to have multiple representations. Wikipedias on some languages prefer the fully skeletal diagrams such as File:Synthesis Butyl propanoate.svg, but others prefer showing the hydrogens on terminal groups such as in File:Propionsäure-n-butylester Reaktionsschemata.svg. Although the nominated image doesn't have proper subscripts for chemical formulas (the only aspect I would characterize as "poor quality"), that can be fixed. Ed (Edgar181) 16:24, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

- Keep: I think that while the sign is the subject of the picture, the content of the sign is not. That is, the sign could be blacked out and the picture would still be useful. This is reinforced by the fact that the sign is blurred enough that some of the text is on the edge of legibility. According to {{PD-US-expired}}, in order to upload this image to Commons, at least 70 years must elapse from the date the photographer dies. Under COM:NPOV, we don't delete files that are in use on Wikipedia for being inaccurate: we expect Wikipedias to stop using them first. - These stills were meant to illustrate a page on the history and content of a certain song event, Festivali "Kur vjen pranvera" ne RTSH, for a 6 year period 1985-1990. True, videos are posted on Youtube private channels which i used and took stills lised above to upload in Wikimedia, however i am aware that those videos are not owned by those channels. Originally they are recordings from public song festival events by RTSH, now "the Albanian public broadcast service", and at the time the song events took place, the only Albanian broadcasting service. Such recordings are still a public domain, to my knowledge their ownership rights still belong to the public. There's no claim from RTSH on works done before year 1990, at least no legal act oversees their regulation, so far. The reason behind in my opinion might be the considerations on private and public property in reference to before and after year 1990 in Albania, as a year that marked change of systems for this country following the Berlin Wall event.

- Thank you, i'd say the work i use pertains to the category of Collective Works rather than individual https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Collective_work#Guidelines. Radio Televizioni Shqiptar - The Albanian Radio Television - was a state broadcasting medium and enterprise; authors in song events were state employees paid by state with honorars for their contributions; musical, vocal and lyrical collaborations were mediated by the state; and to my knowledge just like everybody else at the time, artists too had no individual rights but nominal rights only, on what they collaborated to create.
- All what these pics are up for is to illustrate the song event page with recordings accomplished by state employees. The purpose isn't to use images of private persons, rather, putting in evidence the context of the event: the overview of the stage in all its elements, the background decoration, orchestra layout, the chorus and the conductor, a singer in a specific song viewed from distance. Few of my stills are close ups for better visual information of the context, however if that's viewed as specific and personal i agree to remove them.
- last but not least, these are works done under a system - socialism - that does not live any more and today no one wants to bring up for one reason or another. Rather than getting protected by intellectual property laws the real interest is more into keeping them away from minds and forgetting them having existed. - This has already been subject to a DR and kept. The same grounds apply that this is not a "sculpture" but a found rock made haphazardly by mining. There is nothing here to be copyrighted, not even the brackets holding the rock in place, in the same way that we do not copyright a tree or a cloud.

- Comment I didn't notice the previous DR, as the files that I had opened have not been kept. And this page, that I found following a link from the article in Wikipedia says that it have been sculpted. If it has been sculpted then it is a sculpture. Note that after the previous comment from Fae I searched in other articles, but I did not find more precise infos about the potential creativity of the work done on this "sculpture". I don't think that Mr. Heizer is that old. Plus, Google has made errors in the past. For example, I once searched up a middle school and Google listed it as a wine company. However, on the other side, the museum themselves lists it as a sculpture. I have contacted them and I'm waiting for a reply. - @Christian Ferrer: I am aware of that, User:Archaeodontosaurus told me at Commons:Valued image candidates. Despite two of the images nominated are my uploads, I am mostly neutral in this case. As long as the conclusion is reasonable(for example, the images aren't deleted for some irrevelant reason like Earth copyrighted rocks or the sky), I am fine. I, too am confused whether or not it is a rock or sculpture, if someone could contact Mr. Heizer himself, that would be the best. --BoothSift 20:46, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

Comment I published one of the pictures nominated here for deletion. I agree with @Fæ about ineligibility for such work to be copyrighted. Yes, some work has been done to the actual rock but it was not transformed into any meaningful work. It is still only and solely a rock. For example, the documentary film's website, LA Times, and https://gagosian.com/quarterly/2014/08/18/levitated-mass-heizer/ both called it a rock. On the other hand, the museum, Google and Wikipedia all refer to it as a sculpture. However, https://www.americanscientist.org/article/levitated-mass explains that Michael Heizer simply purchased the boulder, transported it and installed it, so Levitated Mass really isn't "his" artwork. --BoothSift 23:54, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

It would be insulting not to recognize here a work of art, moreover within the framework of one of the most important museums of Modern Art. The problem can be solved by the author, who renounced these rights to the image on this work. Delete I was involved with the original discussion (linked above). While my arguments to delete didn't prevail, I still think the work is not comparable to, say, a Duchamp readymade like Fountain. Levitated Mass is not just the boulder, but is described on the English Wikipedia as "composed of a 21.5-foot (6.55 m) tall boulder mounted on the walls of a 456-foot (138.98 m) long concrete trench, surrounded by 2.5 acres of compressed decomposed granite." The LACMA description makes a similar case: "The boulder is one component of the artwork, as is the 456-foot-long slot beneath it and the surrounding environment." - I think that copyright acts need to guide this discussion more literally as to what copyright is. In copyright law a careful distinction is made between "artworks" where artists may legitimately claim to have rights over reproduction and "craftsmanship" where artisans are unlikely to have any IP rights.
- Specifically commissioning a straight cement trench, asking gardeners to lay two acres of gravel and paying for heavy machinery to move a boulder, are barely acts of craftsmanship, they are certainly not acts which constitute fine art. The nearest equivalent might be the work of a parks manager commissioning a team of gardeners to lay flower beds and mow the lawns; Commons does not ask for evidence of an OTRS release from parks managers for all panoramic photographs of parks, that norm applies here. --Fæ (talk) 09:05, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

An untouched natural rock is not a work of art, it has not intellectual property embodied in it, just because the artist says so. An artist can look at the moon, and a photographer can photograph it. In neither case does the moon now have a valid copyright claim on it as a work of art. Curators are not lawyers and any GLAM IP lawyer would advise employees to avoid making any legally meaningful statement.

- I do not question LACMA's motives.
- There is no "extraordinary claim" here, apart from an artist claiming that a rock that they never actually touched or commissioned any sculpting for, can have rights of Intellectual Property. The evidence needed here to support a claim of copyright is that laying 2 acres of gravel and simply moving a rock, falls under U.S. copyright law as a creative work of art, rather than "craftsmanship". Acts of craftsmanship or gardening, like mowing a lawn, creosoting a wooden fence, or laying a straight cement trench, are not protected under U.S. copyright law.
