Category:Collections of Leiden University Library (uncategorized) is incredibly overfull (167k!) but the vast, vast majority of the media in that category are actually already categorized within the Leiden University Library category system. Could a bot crawl through Category:Southeast Asian & Caribbean Images (KITLV), Leiden University Library (a child category of 140k images) and remove any media with the 'uncategorized' category? There is a lot more sorting to be done after that but I think that's a simple enough task. --- Ricky81682 (talk) 07:29, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Ricky81682: Hi. Just to confirm, these are the target images: incategory:"Collections of Leiden University Library (uncategorized)" incategory:"Southeast Asian & Caribbean Images (KITLV), Leiden University Library". And you want the category Category:Collections of Leiden University Library (uncategorized) removed? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 15:01, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- Also for a file like File:KITLV A142 - Paviljoen met Europeanen te Soerakarta, KITLV 67068.tiff, is it still not uncategorized as it doesn't have any category describing the content of the image? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 15:07, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, the category refers to uncategorized within the collection categories, not generally uncategorized images. Many of the images just contain one of the collection subcategories and do need further categorization but that needs manual review. I think there are other “uncategorized” images in other categories but I suspect there could be like 100k that overlap. It’s a large overlap. - Ricky81682 (talk) 18:00, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

Could a bot run through files uploaded by User:Jacek Halicki and add Category:Corrected by Jacek Halicki to all files that are not in Category:Images by Jacek Halicki? I've tried to fulfil this request myself by using pywikipediabot's listpages (by using a list of files from logevenets), but don't seem able to filter out files that are now redirects. Adding @Jacek Halicki so that he can keep an eye on this. odder (talk) 19:30, 26 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi. Do you want to consider only the initial upload or subsequent uploads too? For example File:Tablica wyjście powstańców do niewoli przy ul. Lwowskiej 2a w Warszawie.jpg. I also see 188 files with "Author Jacek Halicki" not in Category:Images by Jacek Halicki (search). What should happen to these? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 21:39, 26 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Cryptic-waveform: Many thanks for the speedy response. The 188 files can be added to Category:Images by Jacek Halicki. As for the first question, I think it would mostly be overwrites anyway, but original uploads can be processed, too. odder (talk) 00:10, 27 January 2023 (UTC)
- I've added the 188 files to Category:Images by Jacek Halicki. I ran a small sample of images. Can you check that things look OK in Category:Corrected by Jacek Halicki? Once I get confirmation, I'll start running the script for real. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 02:05, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

Category replace request
Hi, can I discuss the complete request with a bot owner who can do it: when a special categorization is specified, and the parameter value for source
is just own, the category should be removed and a string should replace the own
. Always the same text strings (no regex or so), but a greater number of files. -- sarang♥사랑 17:04, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

TC Track maps 2
Could a bot please add Category:Tropical cyclone track maps with the original scale to files already located within Category:Tropical cyclone track maps with command as input code, Category:Tropical_cyclone_track_maps_with_no_input_code, and Category:Tropical cyclone track maps with track data as input code? - This can easily be done with Gadget Cat-a-lot:
- Search for
incategory:"Tropical cyclone tracks" -incategory:"Tropical cyclone track maps with the original scale"

- Using Gadget Cat-a-lot, add the category to the first 500 results.
- Wait a few seconds for the changes to be propagated to all servers.

Mass categorization of Wiki Loves Monuments Poland photos
Hi! I'd like to have 50k files from Polish Wiki Loves Monuments added to categories for voivodeship (province) they were taken in. It will help with arranging GLAM partnerships that involve Commons uploads. These categories are hidden and are part of the contest category tree (like WLM in 2022, Featured photos from WLM etc.).
I've prepared 16 lists of files. Every list applies to one category, linked in a header on top of the page:

Bulk-inserting a category to files
I want to insert a user category (Category:Baleswari Odia pronunciation by Subhashish Panigrahi) to keep track of progress. I could find all the files (here) using Petscan. However, I can't figure out how to use something like cat-a-lot to include the category "" to all these files. Will really appreciate any help. Psubhashish (talk) 03:05, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- The equivalent search is
incategory:"Baleswari Odia pronunciation" -incategory:"Baleswari Odia pronunciation by Musamani Panigrahi"
(search). Since it's a little tedious to use cat-a-lot for thousands of files, I'll add the category for you. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 04:19, 3 March 2023 (UTC)- Thank you so much. The advanced search option is helpful. Really appreciate your quick help with the category creation and sharing this tip. --Psubhashish (talk) 14:12, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
Help for review needed files
Hi. My request is related to reviewers and some news agencies files. For example: We have 13866 from Tasnimnews, 1554 from Farsnews and 1664 from Mehrnews that review needed. But I'm sure We have more than files form these websites that review needed but upladers didn't follow the guides and forgot to add License review
template and related category like
! For example : This file is from Tasnim and this file from farsnews without License review template and category. So please run the Bot and add this template and related category to any files from news agencies that dosen't have License review
template with related category. (Please don't add this template and category to License review passed files.) I think U can run ur bots on all of this website's files.--MehdiTalk 10:16, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Mehdi. I started taking a look at this request, specifically for the Mehr News Agency to start with. Here are the files I find which should have
License review
added: hastemplate:Mehr -incategory:"Files from external sources with reviewed licenses" -incategory:"License review needed" -incategory:"Extracted images". Does this look good to you? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 16:53, 6 March 2023 (UTC)- @Cryptic-waveform: Hi dear.Excellent. OMG, we have more than 4300 files without reviwers template just mehrnews category. - I've add Category:Mehrnews review needed to all files which already had
License review
with cat-a-lot. I'm now adding both the category and the tag to the files listed above. I'll take approximately one hour to complete. I'm done with Mehr. Final count is ~14k files needing review. I will stop here for today, give a chance to everybody to comment or find bugs in the logic used by my bot. Tomorrow I'll continue with Tasnim News. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 16:31, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
- I'm proceeding with files from the Fars News Agency: Category:Farsnews review needed. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 13:28, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- If I understand everything correctly, license reviewers now have to remove two indications when reviewing these files: they have to remove LicenseReview plus . While we could already easily see how many we had to go. That's asking for mistakes. Or do I overlook something? Vysotsky (talk) 14:05, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Vysotsky: No. We do not remove LicenseReview Template. We complete this template ;-) --MehdiTalk 16:00, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Vysotsky is right in pointing out that the license reviewer needs to remember to also remove files from Category:Farsnews review needed (and similar categories for other agencies), and that this can occasionally be forgotten. I don't see this as much of an issue as such files can easily be found by searching for:
incategory:"Farsnews review needed" -incategory:"License review needed"
. Alternatively one could modify Template:Fars (and Template:Mehr, Template:Tasnim, etc.) to behave like Template:BollywoodHungama so that a separate license review tag and category is not needed. For now I'll continue proceeding with marking files needed license review. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 18:09, 8 March 2023 (UTC)- MediaWiki:Gadget-LicenseReview.js automatically removes the category. See line 145. Hanooz 21:24, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Cryptic-waveform: Please check this diff. This file is not from Tasnim. The source of files is IAWF and i don't see any copyright for this website. --MehdiTalk 08:29, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

Could a bot help sort out the images at Category:1870s photographs of Brazil which is a child of Category:19th-century photographs of Brazil? The images though don't have the information within the file so it will need to conduct queries within Wikidata to move them into the relevant month and year subcategories. Replace Date=1970-01-01 in Structured Data of Wikiportret uploads
In some Wikiportret uploads a date of 1970-01-01 was added. I've already fixed the file information templates for the files, but Visual File Change can't fix Structured Data. Delete or change a textphrase in over 16.000 images
Hi, this is my first request. I work for the Commons:WikiProject Postcards. There we have section Search postcards by filetype with this Searchlink: TIF-images with a word "postcard" and no postcard-category. Normally there is under 1000 images to deal with. But now this search is flooded with images of the Category:Photographs by Frank Scholten. Because over 16.000 of this images has the text phrase "The dating has come into being with the use of the postcards." - Can a bot change or delete this useless text phrase? At the moment not one of this image is a postcard.@Mr.Nostalgic and Adamant1: FYI. sk (talk) 18:35, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi sk,
- The dating was established via postcards that where send by him. This is just an explanation why the date field was entered with their values.
- If you want to remove that sentence then there is the option of "visual filechange" for example. There you can change content of files by replacing strings. This can be done with about 3000 files at a time.
- Regards Mr.Nostalgic (talk) 06:45, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Mr.Nostalgic: It is ok for you, when I delete this phrase? Then I will do this. Thanks for the hint with "visual filechange". --sk (talk) 08:12, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi sk,
- I will not object to your actions, it is just that i do not want to have the responsibility for this. The files that i uploaded were on request of @Vysotsky.
- Maybe you could contact him as well, just to be sure that no discussions start to arise.

Replace "developwoment" with "development" in multiple categories
I've found that there are multiple category pages about men and women by stage of human development which were created with up to three instances of the word "developwoment" instead of "development", such as Category:Men brushing their teeth, Category:Adolescent boys cosplaying, and Category:Young women wearing flip-flops. This includes broken Wikipedia links. Although I've manually fixed a few of these categories, there are too many of them, so a bot would be needed to do the job. Null edits
Due to edits to SDC-generated templates, there are a large number of pages in Category:Media contributed by the Digital Public Library of America with unknown institution and Category:Digital Public Library of America files missing required SDC statements that need to be purged. Currently, nearly all of these categories should be depopulated once purged, since the required SDC is not missing. Delete inaccurate coordinates from sets of photos from the Brno Exhibition Centre
Please remove all Location templates and Structured Data coordinates from file sets by Sevela.p.
Ca 654 files affected. The coordinates are very imprecise, scattered at a kilometer distance from the exhibition center. It can be assumed that even for those photos that have a defined position inside the exhibition center with coordinates, the coordinates are inaccurate and do not correspond to the actual location. The number of mislocated photos in a wide area around the fairgrounds makes it impossible to find correctly located photos in this area. (I pointed this out to the uploader on his talk page, he didn't comment. This year, his activity on Wikimedia projects is minimal.) ŠJů (talk) 11:42, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- @ŠJů: I've done some of this. I've used VisualFileChange to remove some of the Location templates, but VFC can't remove structured data so that's still present. For Category:Autosalon Brno 2011 it looked to me like some of the co-ordinates were clustered around three distinct buildings on the map, so I've preserved those ones and deleted the rest. Maybe someone knows some tools to apply my removals to structured data as well. --bjh21 (talk) 13:32, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

Adding colour space declaration to images
Hi. There are a few hundred uploads by User:ThailandPhoto that have the colour space undefined or incorrectly defined, resulting in weird colour rendering on many browsers. See the original version of File:Bangkok Benjakiti Park 2.jpg, for example, which shows up like this. It seems like the fix should be a fairly simple matter of editing the metadata to have the correct colour space declared, which should be possible to batch process using a command line application, but I have no idea how to actually do that. Given that this will involve many images, is this is something that can can be handled by a bot? --Paul_012 (talk) 17:59, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
Delete unnecessary licensing information from files
Hi. Would it possible to have a bot remove some pointless licensing information from a bunch of files related to Allentown, PA? I think there's like 65,000 files that all have the same information. It's not really necessary though and just screws with searches for anything semi-related to things that are mentioned in the details. One example is the licensing information in File:1929 - Allentown - Bethlehem Gas Company - 31 Mar MC - Allentown PA.jpg and Category:Newspaper advertising in Allentown, Pennsylvania, which the file is in, would probably be a good place to start. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 01:39, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

- @Adamant1: There not that many in the category you mentioned. So you would need a larger net. Maybe you want to give it a try, I've used Commons:AWB for this. --Schlurcher (talk) 16:20, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Schlurcher: I'll look into that. If you check out this search it gives 67,248 results, most of which are caused by the paragraph that I'm trying to get rid. I don't really have the time or knowledge to deal with that many instances even if I'm allowed access to the tool. So I'd still prefer it they were just fixed with a bot as opposed to me doing it myself and potentially screwing something up because I'll be in a hurry and not know what I'm doing. --Adamant1 (talk) 18:03, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

POTD - Interwiki transclusion
Hello! Is there any bot operator willing to help in achieving this idea here? - Klein Muçi (talk) 00:06, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- Sounds reasonably easy. Could you show the steps manually that you expect to do the bot on a daily basis? --Schlurcher (talk) 11:25, 30 October 2023 (UTC)
- Schlurcher, thank you for your interest!
Just so I don't accidentally lead you astray, I believe @Tacsipacsi can explain better the exact steps needed to be done.
I'm assuming the bot daily checks the photo of the day and converts the template for it into tabular data which then can be interwiki transcluded? — Klein Muçi (talk) 23:03, 31 October 2023 (UTC) - I have no exact steps, it’s up to the bot owner how exactly to do it. It needs to contain two things for each day:
- the file name from
Template:Potd/YYYY-MM-DD
(e.g. Template:Potd/2023-11-01:Muelle Monroe, Chicago, Illinois, Estados Unidos, 2012-10-20, DD 10.jpg
; can be got by expanding the wikitext
in the context of API), - all captions from
Template:Potd/YYYY-MM-DD (xx)
(e.g. Template:Potd/2023-11-01 (en):View of quiet Monroe Harbor in fall at dawn, Chicago, Illinois, USA.
, Template:Potd/2023-11-01 (fr):Soleil couchant sur le Monroe Harbor, un port de Chicago (États-Unis).
; can be got by expanding the wikitext
in the context of API).
- the file name from
- It should be stored on
.tab
pages in the Data namespace, with periodically (e.g. monthly or yearly) new pages to prevent the page to be loaded getting too large, and have licensed CC BY-SA 4.0 because of the captions originating from CC BY-SA 4.0 template pages. That’s the requirements. - An implementation idea is to use the following schema: —Tacsipacsi (talk) 11:32, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
{ "license": "CC-BY-SA-4.0", "description": { "en": "Picture of the day data for November 2023" }, "sources": "Template:Potd/2023-11", "schema": { "fields": [ { "name": "date", "type": "string", "title": { "en": "Date" }}, { "name": "filename", "type": "string", "title": { "en": "File name" }}, { "name": "caption", "type": "localized", "title": { "en": "Caption" }} ] }, "data": [ [ "2023-11-01", "Muelle Monroe, Chicago, Illinois, Estados Unidos, 2012-10-20, DD 10.jpg", { "en": "View of quiet Monroe Harbor in fall at dawn, Chicago, Illinois, USA.", "fr": "Soleil couchant sur le Monroe Harbor, un port de Chicago (États-Unis).", ⋮ } ], ⋮ ] }
- Ok, that's more involved than I thought. Maybe someone else has the time to get this working. --Schlurcher (talk) 16:57, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- I’ve created a Pywikibot script at https://gitlab.wikimedia.org/tacsipacsi/pywiki/-/blob/main/potd_tabular.py. Unfortunately it turned out that
localized
columns cannot be longer than 400 characters per language, and some captions are longer than that (some language(s) on November 15, November 27 and November 29 in this month – the error message doesn’t include any details other than the row and column numbers, which translate to days and the fact that captions are affected), which make the saving fail. I don’t know why the limit is 400, maybe it could be increased if not entirely removed. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:34, 7 November 2023 (UTC)- Tacsipacsi, maybe a temporary ugly workaround would be to just have the minimal necessary tabular data that make interwiki transclusion possible while meanwhile asking for that limit to be changed? Or is that part unavoidable? — Klein Muçi (talk) 03:16, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Klein Muçi: It depends on what you consider “making interwiki transclusion possible”. I could just not include any captions, which would technically make it work, but I don’t consider a picture of the day without caption useful. While I could also make the script only drop (or truncate) captions longer than 400 characters, I don’t want to do that because it would result in unpleasant surprises: since most captions in most languages would work, people would assume that everything’s okay, and then one day readers would be presented an English caption despite having a translated one, or a truncated caption. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:39, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Polona Upload categories
Special:WantedCategories has a large number of red-link categories resulting from book uploads by the National Library of Poland/ User:Polona Upload.
For example:
which includes, again for example:
It should be possible to create and populate those categories, using information from a sample file's Book template, which gives a year of publication, author, langauge, etc.

Need hard touch on files in a category
Hi. I need to someone with pywikibot to hard touch all the files in Category:Category pages with broken file links to force that category to update, as that cat is refusing to update unless the files are edited. Purging is failing. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:59, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Billinghurst: I am not sure if this is what you wanted, but I went to PAWS, logged in, clicked "new" and "terminal", then ran "
pwb.py touch -family:commons -lang:commons -cat:Category_pages_with_broken_file_links
" to touch the files and other pages in that category (but not subcategories). It just finished after touching 35 pages. —RP88 (talk) 00:34, 11 March 2024 (UTC)- Thanks, and I am an idiot, I meant that categories, not the files. If you could do that for me, I would be much appreciated. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:38, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

". —RP88 (talk) 02:54, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

- @Billinghurst: I believe an automated process was set up to do this kind of thing for the subcats in Category:Non-empty disambiguation categories. Is that somethings that would be helpful here? I don't know how to do it myself, but it seems like the same kind of thing. -- Auntof6 (talk) 07:04, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks @Auntof6. Seems that @Mdaniels5757 did that recursive touch and put it on a cronjob after a discussion here. I used to do that, however, I don't have ready access to the tools machines at this time to set one up. I can probably manually manage the new cases, if push comes to shove. pwb.py touch -family:commons -lang:commons -subcats:Non-empty_disambiguation_categories
another maintenance category that is needing a helping shove. — billinghurst sDrewth 21:38, 17 March 2024 (UTC)- Why are backend processes failing so often and so consistently for those cats and Category:Incomplete deletion requests and children that such touching needs to be done? I have to touch Category:Incomplete deletion requests - missing subpage and everything in it so frequently that this is the default state of my AWB. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:32, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Billinghurst I already have that running daily. —Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 15:39, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Jeff G. it is the nature of the beast for (back)link tables, and how these categories can be passively populated or de-populated. We have had to touch and purge forever, and these mega categories just fail sometimes. For full explanation you will need to ask over at mediawikiwiki or see if someone can address through phabricator. Not a battle I wish to pursue, I am being solutions focused, and I know what I need. — billinghurst sDrewth 20:00, 18 March 2024 (UTC)

Replace coodinates in file descriptions with Location template
Most files within Category:US National Archives series: Digital Photographs Relating to America's Byways have the exact location of the camera within their "|description=", such as "Location: Oregon (44.099° N 121.725° W)" on this file. It would be good if someone could convert this to use the standart Location template. I don't know how many files this affects exactly, but it are definitly multiple thousands. Further, many files have "Photo by XYZ" within the description, but the |author= parameter is empty, resulting in "Author: Unknown author or not provided" which could be fixed too. Add coordinates to images
prologue |

There are many images listed on Commons:Files used on OpenStreetMap that lack coordinates, but have them on OSM. A bot could add Object location to file description pages.
This was previously suggested by another user to the maintainer of the lists, but they have other things on their plate. @Herzi Pinki and Bjh21: Enhancing999 (talk) 09:21, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

For files listed on the >175 subpages at Commons:Files used on OpenStreetMap, please add Object location to file description pages.

Removing a redundant parent category from 100+ images
Most (maybe all?) of the 111 images in the category Category:Los_Gaiteros_de_San_Jacinto are also in parent category Category:Cumbia music groups from Colombia. Would someone be able to remove the parent category from those images? GanzKnusper (talk) 11:41, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
- GanzKnusper: That was quite a simple request and does not need a bot to do it. I've done them and used the "Perform batch task" that you find in the left side panel of pages. I used it on the files in the category and did a simple replace of Category:Cumbia music groups from Colombia with a "space" though two of the files did not have to be changed as you suggested. This is something you can do yourself but be cautious as it is a powerful tool with many options and easy to make mistakes. There seem to be more files that should be in Category:Los_Gaiteros_de_San_Jacinto, so simple text replacement will do the job for you replacing one category with another one. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 12:14, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for that! I wasn't aware of VisualFileChange.js, which adds the "Perform batch task" option. I'll cautiously try it out! GanzKnusper (talk) 12:48, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Add Template:User category (CL)
Please add to the user categories of @Chris Light: . This ensures they are in Category:User categories (flat list) and marked as hidden categories.
To find them: https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=28135244
I fixed the few inclusions that weren't user categories (or shouldn't be): sample. A few are still to fix:
- Category:Smith_Type_IV_Truss
- Category:Indiana_SR_42_Over_Eel_River
- Category:Grd_Promenade_(Hot_Spings_NP)
- Category:Pizza_King_(Brookston)
- Category:Porter_(Rea)_Cemetery_Historic_marker
- Category:Hazards_(LTNP)
About 60 are currently not hidden categories: sample. They will be once the template is added. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:49, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- This can be easily done using AutoWikiBrowser (see example diff). Getting the categories into AWB is quite easy - in Petscan, select "Wiki" as output format and save the result as txt file. Now, in AWB, you can use that file to generate a list by selecting "Text file (UTF-8)" as source. The only problem is that a bot-enabled account would be useful for this, otherwise you'll have to manually confirm 4540 edits... Fl.schmitt (talk) 09:57, 14 July 2024 (UTC)

- @DaxServer: Would be great - thanks a lot! I'm not sure if a bot additionally needs AWB access. I've got AWB access, but my bot was approved for different tasks... Anyway, after AWB approval, creating the task in AWB is very easy - since the only modification required is prepending the User category, no regex, no replacements or deletions. Fl.schmitt (talk) 15:22, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Fl.schmitt My bot was approved for different tasks too and will need to apply for approval for this one-time task. I'd use the https://doc.wikimedia.org/pywikibot/stable/scripts/main.html#replace-script to replace
__HIDDENCAT__
withChris Light
. If the template is already inserted, I'll skip. Here is the command: pwb replace -subcatsr:"Image by Chris Light" -summary:"Summary goes here" -ns:Category -excepttext:"{{User category" "__HIDDENCAT__" ""
- I'll check the petscan query after the run and handle the missed ones. How does this sound? -- DaxServer (talk) 17:34, 14 July 2024 (UTC)

Somehow petscan isn't updating.
- Special:Search/Category: intitle:"CLight" -hastemplate:"User category"

Files like this have some duplicated text and content that is of interest mainly to Flickr users. In the past, I cleaned up some pages myself, but there are actually plenty of them, see Special:Search/"PLEASE, NO invitations or self promotions, THEY WILL BE DELETED." (about 10000). Also Category:Dennis G. Jarvis and Special:Search/"Dennis G. Jarvis" (27000).
Possibly Creator:Dennis G. Jarvis template could be added at the same time. Enhancing999 (talk) 07:38, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Enhancing999 Do you have example diffs of the cleanup? -- DaxServer (talk) 19:40, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- I omitted a sample, wanting to leave it to the bot operator. In the meantime, I made Creator:Dennis G. Jarvis.
- Maybe this: diff
- deletion of part of the "Description" in "en": "PLEASE, NO invitations or self promotions, THEY WILL BE DELETED. My photos are FREE to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks."
- deletion of the notice twice in "Permission": "PLEASE, no multi invitations or self promotion in your comments, THEY WILL BE DELETED. My photos are FREE for anyone to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks - NONE OF MY PICTURES ARE HDR."
- addition of Creator:Dennis G. Jarvis

Tokyo and Shibuya day photographs categories using a wrong template
Hi, many of those day categories at Category:Photographs of Tokyo by date and Category:Photographs of Shibuya by date (Shibuya is a subdivision of Tokyo) unfortunately use the wrong template Template:World photos, which is originally intented for use on country level, not on city and city subdivision level. Using World photos
categorizes Tokyo and Shibuya at this time on world level, which is not correct. I have recently set up the Template:Tokyo photographs taken on navbox for use both on Tokyo level as well as on the level of it's subdivisions. It will properly categorize on Japan resp. Tokyo level. Thus I'm kindly asking for a bot substituting the full content of those day categories by
. I have done a few of those categories manually for test purposes, but there are more than 200 left in Category:Photographs of Shibuya by date and about 300 in Category:Photographs of Tokyo by date. Thank you very much! --Kleeblatt187 (talk) 09:35, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- There are also quite a few empty categories there. I have no idea if they got created by mistake or if they are suppossed to be filled with files soon, so I'm not sure if we should keep them or delete them. Tokyo photographs are not within my working field. But we definitely need to remove the wrongly used
World photos
code, either by deleting those empty categories or – as suggested – by substituting the category text with
in order to remove the wrong categorization at world level. Thank you, regards, --Kleeblatt187 (talk) 09:35, 8 September 2024 (UTC)- @Kleeblatt187 Done in 543 categories -- DaxServer (talk) 14:06, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

Convert Category:Photographs by Carol M. Highsmith to JPEG
Category:Photographs by Carol M. Highsmith is an excellent Library of Congress collection of very good images. Unfortunaly, all those images are in TIFF format, which means that the average file size is 100-300 MB, which is incredibly large. It causes long loading times of even the preview image (let alone the actual file), and TIFF file format is not supported by most browsers or general applications. Wikipedia discourages using TIFF files for those reasons, and this reduces the likelyhood of those excellent images being used.
Therefore, some bot should convert those TIFFs to JPEGs, copy the descriptions/categories and make sure the files reference each other. Further, the categories from the TIFF files should be replaced with Category:LC TIF images with categorized JPGs TheImaCow (talk) 21:59, 30 June 2024 (UTC)
- @TheImaCow Thanks for finding this. I've filed for a bot Commons:Bots/Requests/ImageConverterBot -- DaxServer (talk) 15:13, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- I didn't expect someone to reply to this so quick, thank you!
- I came across this series via Category:Aerial photographs of the United States and subcats, which contains many poorly categorized images from this collection. TheImaCow (talk) 16:40, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- LCCN2013631230.tif shows a jpg and several jpg-sizes are offered. Is this really needed? Enhancing999 (talk) 18:44, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hmm, I didn't notice that. It seems it is not necessary after all -- DaxServer (talk) 20:56, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe I'm blind, but where are those files offered? It's not the "Download/Use this file/Email a link" bar, all resolutions there only download the same low-quality preview generated by the Mediawiki software (which is shown on the file description page) TheImaCow (talk) 21:19, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- Below the image, there is a line:
- "Size of this JPG preview of this TIF file: 800 × 533 pixels. Other resolutions: 320 × 213 pixels | 640 × 427 pixels | 1,024 × 683 pixels | 1,280 × 853 pixels | 2,560 × 1,707 pixels | 6,144 × 4,096 pixels."
- The last one matches the tiff. Enhancing999 (talk) 21:52, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- Oh thanks I see. However this is very obscure and when embedding the file anywhere, it will always refer to the TIF version - so an seperate JPG should probably still be uploaded, like the 220,000 other TIF files in Category:LC TIF images with categorized JPGs (or the 58,000 Category:NARA TIF images with categorized JPGs)
- But I don't have strong opinions on this. TheImaCow (talk) 22:11, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- Loading a file to test this -- DaxServer (talk) 05:51, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- Possibly support for tiffs was less developed when they were uploaded. I wonder how all those thousands of duplicates are curated and how much volunteer time is lost by handling two instead of just one copy of every image. WMF recently expressed their view on hosting files on Commons that aren't used on WMF sites [7]. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:22, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- Well, in theory, those TIF duplicates shouldn't need any curation, as they are supposed to be dumped into the massive categories mentioned above, and only linked from the description of the maintained JPG version.
- The use of TIF is something I think is generally not needed for 99.9% of files, modern compression is more than good enough.
- (I don't oppose eventually getting rid of the TIF duplicates, but there is not even consensus to delete de-facto duplicates where one version is rotated differently by single degrees, or random low quality TIF scans of generic text documents, where the same scans are also uploaded as JPG, so forget it) TheImaCow (talk) 13:28, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- Oddly, I can't figure out which one of the two maps is correct ;) Did you nominate the wrong one? For the text ones, I'd have nominated the jpg ones. The assumption that deletion doesn't save anything is incorrect: deletion reduces curation (even if theoretically none is needed, it still happens and wastes volunteer time), limits spamming of Special:search, can even save storage space as files can be purged (from non-public view) or wont be exported twice when requested.
- As technology changes, I think views on this evolve. NARA's approach might have been the ideal 15 years ago, but other GLAMS that started only more recently use different approaches. Enhancing999 (talk) 12:13, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
- Not sure what you mean. Both maps are exactly the same. JPG ones nominated instead? Ideally someone uploads a PDF and 307 files are replaced with one in the correct format for documents. I never said I oppose deletions, I said the exact opposite.
- The NARA approach has actually changed - there have been at least two bulk uploads, one in 2011 and the other 2019.
- The 2011 one uploaded nearly every image twice - one TIF+one JPG. The 2019 one uploaded only JPGs.
- Looking at the NARA catalogue, files uploaded earlier have often TIF,JPG and sometimes GIF versions for download. Images uploaded 2019, presumably digitized later, have only high-resulution JPGs for download. TheImaCow (talk) 18:33, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
- It's better to have the lossless files than a JPEG, as you can always make a JPEG from a lossless file, but you can't make a lossless from a JPEG. Still, while we shouldn't delete the TIFFs, we should make JPEG options. Adam Cuerden (talk) 08:52, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
- If we want to offer lossless files in a reasonable sizes (2MB vs 200MB), we might want to consider offering PNGs instead of JPEGs -- DaxServer (talk) 08:57, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
- @DaxServer: Please don't, PNG images look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) on WMF projects. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:59, 13 July 2024 (UTC)

What should be done now? Is there any reason to not do what has been already done successfully with hundreds of thousands of NARA/LOC files? TheImaCow (talk) 11:57, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- What leads you to describe it as "successful"? How many edits had to be made because we have the same file twice? Enhancing999 (talk) 12:02, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- "successful" because the TIF versions are dumped into the massive TIF categories linked above and linked in the "other_versions=" parameter at the information template of their respective JPG version, in case anyone needs them. JPG versions are maintained, TIF versions are just there. And there hasn't been much of an issue with as far as I can tell.
- Please show some nessescary manual edits that had to be done twice, because when done right, there aren't any. TheImaCow (talk) 17:02, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- Any edit on the version you consider secondary is as waste of curation energy. Wouldn't professionally managed archives clean this up beforehand rather than waste our volunteer's time to clean it up?
- Sometimes I wonder if they employ uploaders paid by the number of files uploaded. We seem to end up with books added page by page in duplicate copy from what should be a single djvu document. Enhancing999 (talk) 18:20, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- "Any edit on the version you consider secondary is as waste of curation energy." - Yes obviously and I fully agree on that. Thats why there are categories like Category:LC TIF images with categorized JPGs - these images have JPG versions which are being maintained, and the TIF files in this category are uncategorized besides being in that category/referenced from the JPG file description page. This means that there is no need to ever do any edits on TIF files in that category, as only the "categorized JPGs" are maintained.
- (Topic Paid by files uploaded: I don't think so, this is simply the format those scans are stored, and with proper software to handle this, there isn't anything wrong - but Commons dosen't have the software, and i fully support efforts to convert single page uploads of books into PDF. The core problem is that Commons software is not designed to handle the same media in multiple file formats, like e.g. the Internet Archive which offers texts for download in countless different file formats from the same description page (random example.)) - These seems like an over optimization. Things work, they are a bit slower because someone thought having a very high resolution in a very badly compressible format was desirable. The side effect of very large originals is that it takes a while before the thumbnail is ready. But for 99.9% of the people that isn't a problem. Thubmnails are cached. If images are used, you therefor never have to wait for the thumbnail. You are in the .1% of people (Curators) looking at things that are NOT used. It's acceptable to wait a second in that case. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 13:47, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- "someone thought it was desireable" - The Library of Congress used an archival format to archive the images, but we are not the LOC, and have different goals - so we should use file formats better suited for our uses.
- The motto of this site is "freely usable media" - this also includes not having to have very fast internet connections or special programs to process or even fully view the file (at least edge/firefox cannot show raw .tif files in the browser, e.g. when trying to zoom in further), and this list could be expanded endlessly. We shouldn't forget our actual end users, who in general have much less knowledge about dealing with such file types, or generally anything.
- Another issue not yet mentioned is that TIFF files are not indexed by Google Image Search and presumably other search engines, which is bad for obvious reasons. (search for
site:commons.wikimedia.org carol highsmith
, and there are only a couple hundred images which have been manually converted to JPG, but not a single of the 30,000 TIFs, appending filetype:TIFF dosen't return anything at all) TheImaCow (talk) 17:02, 24 July 2024 (UTC)- If Google is broken than we don't want users at Commons having to fix it. Enhancing999 (talk) 18:22, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- This is fully intentional, as demonstrated plenty of times, TIFF is a format simply not suitable for general web use. TheImaCow (talk) 20:05, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

- Comment Yes, on Commons, we need JPEG. If the source may not be available in the long term, we should also upload the original TIFF versions, but that not the case here. Be sure to link both versions. That was not done for some other files uploaded from LOC or NARA, and it is now a mess. Yann (talk) 18:09, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- @TheImaCow, Enhancing999, Adam Cuerden, Jeff G., TheDJ, and Yann: I've started a discussion at Commons:Village pump#Should we convert all TIFFs to JPEGs?. I hope this would be the right place to garner a wider consensus on this -- DaxServer (talk) 16:46, 3 August 2024 (UTC)

Sanborn maps (done 2024-10-28)
delete empty tif file description pages where a jpg exists
User:Achim55/File pages without files list ca. 600 file description pages. Many are tiffs, such as this that lack an actual file, but have a working jpg version exists (here). I think these tiffs can be tagged for deletion.
∞∞ Enhancing999 (talk) 11:14, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
Not that it matters for this request, but some might actually have a "tiff" version with the extension ".tiff" and the above are just empty file description pages with ".tif" instead.

- The underlaying problem was a malfunction during file renaming. User:CAPTAIN RAJU might tell us how they moved the files technically. An example:
- Step 1: The tiff File:Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine. LOC sanborn03429 003-1.tif is moved to File:Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine, 1896, Plate 0001.tiff, OK
- Step 2: The accompanying jpg File:Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine. LOC sanborn03429 003-1.jpg is successfully moved to File:Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine, 1896, Plate 0001.jpg, but this jpg move changed erroneously the page/log/history of the tif file by overwriting the existing redirect of the tiff move.
- Now the previously moved tif shows up again and
- Step 3: is moved a second time but this time not to .tiff but to .tif File:Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine, 1896, Plate 0001.tif, completing the mess.
- If there is a .tiff of the same name the .tif can be deleted by bot or script. Anything else should be checked manually. Enhancing999 could not wait for my explanation and aleady tagged pages for deletion. That's cooperation I like... --Achim55 (talk) 19:35, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- I forgot: The initial redirect of step 1 has to be fixed as it now points to .tif instead of .tiff. --Achim55 (talk) 20:10, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Well, manual cleanup happens even when a bot would fix this more efficiently.
- Is there an actual sample where you think it shouldn't be deleted? We shouldn't keep hundreds of empty file description pages around just because they might be useful some time when we already have jpgs for the same.
