Hu Shih

Hey- the original uploader of that photograph can only speak low-level English (according to the user's userpage). The user may have been unaware that the 'Hu Shih' spelling is the convention in English and just went straight from Hanyu Pinyin. Hu Shih's passport says "Hu Shih", and the original uploader was trying to write in English. I submit that the user made an understandable but significant error. Regardless, the man himself (Hu Shih) was an English-speaking person who lived in the USA and he didn't go by the name "Hu Shi" during his lifetime. The uploader was attempting to use English and failed. We don't get to make up pretend names for people. Shi-Kuo Chang is not Zhang Xiguo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shi-Kuo_Chang --Geographyinitiative (talk) 05:06, 27 June 2019 (UTC) (modified)

This was hardly to understand at the request. So if it will be renamed, I will not oppose it now. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 07:26, 27 June 2019 (UTC)
Okay sorry, thanks for your help. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 07:59, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

Photo walk in Stockholm

It's only a few weeks until Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. I'd like to invite you to the Commons Photographer's photo walk. If you're planning on going to Stockholm in August, please consider joining this event. This is an opportunity to connect with other photographers, have fun together, and explore the beauty of an iconic Scandinavian city… All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 03:38, 1 July 2019 (UTC)

File:Tusa hiti ,Patan , Lalitpur, Nepal 01.jpg

Hi there! I see you denied several of my renaming requests. You were probably confused by the erroneous Heritage number NP-LP-11 (in stead of NP-LP-24), which refers to Tusha Hiti. Please see for yourself the enormous difference with the actual https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Tusha_Hiti and undo your denials of my requests. --Judithcomm (talk) 13:02, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi, you gave as renaming cuas "optional text". I could not seen any cause for an optional text. You did not make clear, why this should have been renamed. Do it in a correct way in the first request, and there will be no problem. But a cause need to be valide. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 14:03, 14 July 2019 (UTC)
Sorry but I do not entirely understand your reasoning. I didn't fill in the "optional text" field, because I assumed it is, as stated, optional. I've requested it again now, including an optional text.--Judithcomm (talk) 14:35, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi. I see you deleted this 1918 photo, on the grounds that Stoneman didn't die until 1958. However I see other Stoneman photos are still on WP. Can I ask you what the logic is here? Thanks. Kleinzach (talk) 12:33, 18 July 2019 (UTC)

The thing is, that some Wikipedias have other rules for their project. As you will know, every Wiki is indepentently administrated. So for example, the en:WP allowed in much filds much more than the de:WP, in some fields the de:WP is more open than the en:WP. Commons has their special rules. On Commons we must follow those rules. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 18:18, 18 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, Can you point me to the specific rule you are following? As I expect you realise this case is related to UK copyright not US copyright. Kleinzach (talk) 21:25, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
Hi, the UK copyright situation you can find here. Probably this would be enough. But - and not the big but - for Commons you need a free copyright for both areas. The UK and the US, because the Server are standing in the United States. This makes a lot of things so difficult. I would like that it would be different and easier too. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 06:47, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

File: Edwin Henry Barton.jpg

Hi, I see that you deleted file Edwin Henry Barton.jpg on the grounds that he died in 1958. I have reliable information that he died on September 23, 1925. Could you please reinstall this file? Livinus (talk) 10:28, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

It's not importan, when the person on the image died. We're talking abou the photographer (see also above). He has the copyright. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 13:08, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

3 Darracq-Fotos

  1. Darracq 1904 Genevieve vvr.JPG Versionsgeschichte
  2. Darracq 1904 Genevieve Front.JPG Versionsgeschichte (Frontansicht)
  3. Darracq 1904 Genevieve vvl.JPG Versionsgeschichte (Anmerkung: Endung jeweils großes JPG)

Laut Versionsgeschichte morgens von Brackenheim nach Darracq 1904 Genevieve at Regent Street Motor Show 2011.jpg verschoben.

-- Marcus Cyron (talk) 19:32, 19 October 2019 (UTC)

Logo for Wiki Science Competition
Logo for Wiki Science Competition

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Your best shot 2019

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

It's early 2020, which means it's time again to look back at photographs taken over the course of the past 12 months. As always, I'm curious – what would you consider your best shot of 2019 and why? I invite you to share your image and your thoughts in order to provide others with the opportunity to celebrate, learn, and enjoy:

Your best shot 2019

Thanks for all your effort in sharing your vision of the world with others under a free license!

-- Marcus Cyron (talk) 13:04, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

Bild Tarvi Sikk

Vielen Dank!--2605:B100:522:A0EF:7865:8501:5940:EE26 18:15, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I don't know, what exactly we talking about. And - IÄm definetly not a specialist in logo rights. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 17:42, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
Vielen Dank!--2605:B100:504:F978:81D3:1DBF:276:8FBB 23:22, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
Was genau soll ich jetzt tun? -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 00:18, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
I will speak to you in English, what I mean is that on the link I provided you, it's a version that contains more reliable sources and the text is more complete, with logos added in History section but after the user who made it has undid his revision probably by mistake. It would be more constructive to put this version back.--2605:B100:537:A7C2:ECA0:AF0E:AD0A:4D93 15:02, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
Hallo Marcus, c:Category:Sockpuppets of ConsumersDistributingonline.
-- Marcus Cyron (talk) 23:43, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

I did not find in the rule a ban on such renaming. Please specify the item you are referring to. — Ирука13 19:38, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Simply think about it. What would that become for a mess, when we start to have image titles in different writing systems. I'm waiting for the first person who wanna have the same discription in english and russian. Or french and arabic. Or Chinese, japanese and hebrew. This can not work. You can ofcourse ask for a second opinion. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 19:41, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
You refused to rename the file, referring to the rule. Please, justify your action with the rule to which you refer. — Ирука13 19:43, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Similar to the topic above. 13 19:45, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

No, it's not similar. You have here as discription just one word: "Мелитополь". And onstead of creating a usefull discription for the image, you wanna have as discription the file name. But no - the file name ist not the discription! Instead of a short file name and a long discription you wanna change the system. No. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 20:36, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
You refused to rename the file, referring to the rule. Please, justify your action with the rule to which you refer. — Ирука13 11:46, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

For what reason the file was not renamed to my version? Why is it not renamed in the nominative case? — Ирука13 19:49, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

A file name ist not the discription. And special typography is always a problem and should if possible not be made. A lot of people have problems to write this. You also should not just think on you, but also on ather people. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 20:33, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
You refused to rename the file, referring to the rule. Please, justify your action with the rule to which you refer. What about the answer to the second question? — Ирука13 11:47, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
Show me the rule, that this file has to be renamed. I say, your request would make thetle more worse. In this case ofcourse there's no renaming. Point. If you don't like my descision, you are free to ask for a second opinion. Point. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 13:28, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

About crops

Hi, Marcus Cyron. Last week you deleted this crop. You argued it was insulting for the cyclist. She was not favored in the imagen, but it wasn't because the crop, in the original imagen she is not favored too. I employ crops of the original imagens to follow a norm in Spanish Wikipedia: to avoid too large infoboxes. So, I cut the vertical length, to avoid things like this (so is it better). I write you, because I don't want to have a problem about the crops I make, for example the last one (I made it just now). So tell me, is it a bad quality crop? better not to delete redirects

Hello, I am writing to you because I saw this: Category:Lekythos des Syriskos-Malers, AMB F2252. I am sure that you could not imagine it, however, until today[1], the article el:Λευκή λήκυθος του Ζωγράφου του Συρίσκου (Αρχαιολογικά Μουσεία του Βερολίνου F2252), was linked to this, deleted category. So, my conclusion, better not to delete redirects. You might never know who or when will miss them. --FocalPoint (talk) 18:49, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

To be honest, I never had thought about that before. I know it with files, but not about Categories. Category redirects cause some problems but you are right, it shouls nor vanish, when it's used. And I don't know a way to check the usage. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 20:18, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi, The picture marked for speedy deleting is from my personal collection, taken with my camera by a friend of mine. I have additional photos from the same session to prove it. I have previously allowed some Serbian media to use this photo in the articles about my work. As you can see under this picture is written: "...Privatna arhiva" (Personal archive). Photos from the same session that I've as well allowed, you can find here (https://www.telegraf.rs/sport/fudbal/3095919-sve-o-var-na-marakani-ko-sme-da-bude-u-sobi-kako-tece-razgovor-sudija-koliko-monitora-kamera). What's wrong with Ariarathes III?

Hello. Why are you renaimed File:AriarathesIII.jpg? German Hafner identified this coin as coin of Ariarathes III. --Venzz (talk) 11:48, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Where the proof, that this is Ariarathes V.? Why not Ariarathes VI.? Or Ariarathes VII.? The request is just a guess - and there are still the description it would be Ariarathes III. and it's still spread all over the projects, that this would be Ariarathes III. Just to ask for a renaming, but let everything else as it is is a weak proof, that it is correct. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 13:40, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Diskussionsstil

Viele Grüße, AFBorchert (talk) 10:33, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

-- Marcus Cyron (talk) 10:47, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
--AFBorchert (talk) 11:20, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

  • I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:43, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Reminder: User Group Meeting this Saturday

Dear Commons Photographers User Group member,

This is a quick reminder that our second virtual meeting will take place this Saturday, September 26. The agenda entails presentations about drone photography, about the story behind a featured picture, and about the future of LRMediaWiki. We'll also discuss photographers’ contacts with the Wikimedia Foundation and the election of representatives for our user group. You'll find information about all of this on the event page:

I'm also inviting you to share some information about yourself and your photography work with other members of the user group on our new membership list:

I hope you're well during these difficult times. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 15:44, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

-- Marcus Cyron (talk) 15:26, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Commons Photographers User Group meeting on Saturday

Dear Commons Photographers User Group member,

I'd like to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, December 12. We'll have two presentations: Habib Mhenni aka Dyolf77 will answer the question Do "we" need DSLRs anymore? and Martin Falbisoner will walk us through the making of his featured picture File:Caribbean_Sea_-_Long_Exposure.jpg.

If you can make it, please add your name to the list of attendees to this page:

I hope to see you in three days. Also, I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best for 2021. Your contributions to Commons make a big difference.

Warmly, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 14:05, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Emily Thater

Hi, there! I asked to the project that takes care of images for a crop of a file about the professional volleyball player Emily Thater, so I could add it to her wikipedia page. It seems you deleted the cropped file. Can I ask you why? Is it possible to have the cropped pic back? Thank you. :) --OTHravens 7 (talk) 14:08, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

The crop was a violation of personality rights. It it one thing, to have a whole image of celebrating people. But in the moment you crop something out there, you create a new image of it's own. And this was an image, that was claerly an attack on personal rights and a disgrace. Not everything, what is technically possible, is under human conditions OK to do. In the moment, a crop insults the person instead of illustrating an article, we can not accept this. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 14:16, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
I get it, thank you. So there's no way I can take that pic of her and put it on her page, taking off the other players. Isn't it? --OTHravens 7 (talk) 14:46, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

Your most memorable shot 2020

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

Over the course of the past two years, we've been sharing pictures that have a special meaning with each other at the start of the new year. Today, I'm inviting you add your most memorable shot of 2020 to this page:

I hope you, your familiy, and your friends are well during these difficult times. I wish you all the best for 2021 and I can't wait to see what your most memorable shot of 2020 looks like.

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons!

Dear Marcus Cyron

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Sorry, @Wikitanvir (WMF): - but I will not support such dictatorial elements. Especially not, because I felt firsthand how the WMF used it improperly. The UCoC is a pure disciplinary measure against unpopular (seen from the WMF, so people who can think for themself) users. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 11:54, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
Hello Marcus Cyron, thank you for sharing how you feel. I want you to know that your opinion is still important. Therefore, I would be happy if you can participate in the survey on UCoC. Thank you for your consideration. Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 22:33, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC

Hello Marcus Cyron,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:31, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

@Frank Schulenburg: - erinnere mich mal kurz vorher nochmal dran ;). -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:45, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

--Frank Schulenburg (talk) 22:06, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Boscoreale mirror

Hi Marcus! Unfortunately, I have but few pictures of the Boscoreale treasure, and they are all on Commons. As soon as the Louvre reopens, I will try to photograph the mirror. Can you confirm this is the correct artwork? Do you know where exactly the signature is? Jastrow (Λέγετε) 08:42, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

You are a godess! :) I think, this is the right piece. I only know a discription, not an image, but everything, the material, the motive and the number Bj 2158 maked clear, it must be this piece. I'm working in the moment on biografies and lists on ancient toreuts, gold- & silversmiths and jewelers (I need a short break from ceramics ;)). -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 12:35, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

Reminder: Commons Photographers meeting tomorrow

Just a quick reminder: the meeting with large format-photographer Ben Horne will happen tomorrow, Saturday, March 20. If you haven't done yet, please consider signing up for the event and add your questions to this page. This will be our first virtual meeting in 2021 and I'd be super happy if you could join. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:34, 19 March 2021 (UTC)

--Frank Schulenburg (talk) 11:16, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Schöngarth

Apologies for using English, aber mein Deutsch ist schrecklich. Question: do you think an undeletion request for this image (deleted from Commons on 10 June 2015) could be successful? The photograph shows (literally) the other side of Karl Eberhard Schöngarth, the scarfaced SS-doctor. The photo was made between 30 Jan. 1941 and 30 Jan. 1943 by an unknown photographer. I am certain of the date because of Schöngarth's uniform, as SS-Oberscharführer. I am also sure about the photo being in the public domain: unknown photographer, 70 years after publication, Urheberrecht in Deutschland: § 66 Anonyme und pseudonyme Werke, (1) Bei anonymen und pseudonymen Werken erlischt das Urheberrecht siebzig Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung.' Vysotsky (talk) 14:06, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I can't see, why this image should be treatened different than this. The main question is, is the one on Commons also a candidate for deletion more than the other for restoration?! -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 15:17, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
To delete or not to delete, that's the question. Seriously: deletion depends on the law of the country, date, photographer, contracts involved and several other circumstances - you know it all. In these cases: both unknown photographer, both >70 years old, both orig. under German law, § 66 Urheberrecht seems to apply, so I wil give it a go and ask for undeletion. Report

Hello, please take a look at this report: Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Files named with meaningless/disruptive names (motivated renaming was reverted without any valid reason) as these are serious everyday violations of the Commons rules and protection of meaningless names (in this case, Kalumny which translates as Columns). User Kazimier Lachnovič with filemover rights constantly performs violations of the Commons rules, creates instability issues and protects meaningless names, thus creates confusion. His Commons admin rights previously were lifted, but it is clear that it is not enough. -- Pofka (talk) 17:19, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution.

Logo for Wiki Science Competition

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Glyptothek-Fotos

Hallo Marcus,

-- Martinus KE (talk) 16:30, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Der Wille ist da. Leider so wenig Zeit.
Habe mal alles was ich konnte gemacht. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 17:38, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

-- Marcus Cyron (talk) 22:03, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Save the date: Commons Photographers meeting next week

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

Please save the date: on Saturday, June 19th, our next virtual Zoom meeting is going to take place. As you know, one goal of these meetings is to share knowledge about different types of photography. This time, we've lined up the following presentations:

  • Photography in Nigeria
  • Photographing vehicles
  • I started printing my images – here’s what I've learned so far…

If you'd like to participate in this event, please consider signing up on this page. Also, if you'd like to present at one of the next meetings, please send me a quick note. Sharing your experiences and learnings with others can make a huge difference!

I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best! Hope to see you on the 19th.

Warmly, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 03:13, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

This Sunday!

Hi, this is just a quick reminder: the next virtual meeting of our user group is scheduled for Sunday, June 19, 16:00 UTC. Topics are: “Photography in Nigeria”, “Photographing Vehicles”, “Wildlife photography and citizen science”, and “I started printing my images – here’s what I've learned so far…”. I'm thrilled about this great agenda and I'm looking forward to connecting with you again. Stay safe and all the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 03:08, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

Deleted images

Hi. An email to VRT has been sent. But i dont understand why the files are being deleted. MiguelAlanCS (talk) 21:36, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

Because they were tagged as Copyvio. Contact me, when you have the permission, a restoration is possible. But not before the permission is here (why you can not ask for a permission, before you upload the images?). Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:39, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

I asked for permission. I have communications between the author and I, representing Wikimedistas de Perú. Its very complicated to do campaigns like this, asking for donors, when things like this happens. Im very frustrated :( MiguelAlanCS (talk) 21:46, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

According ticket 2022070310006014 all pictures must be restored ASAP. Regards!!! Ezarateesteban 21:56, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
Ask me - can you imagine, how frustrating this is for us here? Why you can not do this from the beginning in a correct way? We can not act here in such a lax way as you apparently have in mind. Copyrights are not a basis for negotiation. They are not up for discussion. Right from the start, work in a way that doesn't lead to more work. First permission, then upload. It is not fun to restore nearly 300 images, just because you wanted to do it fast, instead of doing it good. Marcus Cyron (talk) 22:10, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

So, how i do next time? I want to do it correctly because i always ask for photos from photographers. How can an author send a mail to VTR before know the link? What are the steps to do it right? Thanks! MiguelAlanCS (talk) 22:16, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

The easiest way: Use this templae. Or use as you did here genereic names and ask for a permission for these files prior to the upload and upload them then with the known ticket number. Marcus Cyron (talk) 22:23, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

I used that template. But i will do the second: generic names, then the ticket, and at last upload... MiguelAlanCS (talk) 22:35, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

Quick update on behalf of the Commons Photographers User Group

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I hope you're well and enjoy taking photos for Wikimedia Commons. Here are a couple of quick updates on behalf of our group:

  • Suitable! Unsuitable! How to choose photos for a Wikipedia for children, “Klexikon (Ziko)
  • The aperture and its (less known) effects (XRay)
You can sign up for the event on this page: Virtual Meeting on August 27, 2022. – Given that we can accommodate more speakers, I'll invite you to get in touch with me in case you'd like to present on the 27th. You can reach me any time on my talk page or by sending a quick email.
  • Also, we now have a page for local events organized by members of our user group: Local events 2022. Please check it out and consider organizing an event yourself!
  • And finally, we're planning on offering a Post-processing Workshop on October 8. Please save the date; an events page with more information will go up later.

Thanks for being a member of our group and for sharing your works under a free license. Have fun taking pictures!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 15:23, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

You're invited to provide input…

Dear fellow member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

At our last meeting end of August, we talked about getting in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation and offering our help for improving Wikimedia Commons. Today, I invite you to provide your input on a draft open letter to the Foundation. Over the course of the next ten days, we'll further improve the text together, before inviting people to sign it. If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.

In the meanwhile, I hope you're well and have a great time taking photos! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 08:42, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

PD-Art and Greek vases

Hi Marcus. Although I disagreed with you about the copyright status of the photo of the kylix at Yale, I wanted to tell you that what I said in the discussion of the deletion request is true: I really do admire what you have done here over the years to make the Commons a more useful place for those who are interested in Greek and Roman art. When I first started searching the Commons for photos to use for teaching, back in the mid-2000s, it was still of somewhat dubious value, but there were a few people active in the area of ancient art back then who were clearly trying to increase the range of images and improve their organization, and in general make it more useful for serious academic purposes. You were one of those (along with others like Marie-Lan Nguyen (Jastrow), who became my personal hero -- I can't tell you how many of her images I used in my classes over the years!). Anyway, I was genuinely surprised to find that it was you who uploaded the photo of the Yale cup, since I didn't check the username before I tagged it for deletion. You've been doing this a lot longer than I have, and I meant no disrespect, even if we disagree in our interpretations of PD-Art.

This case does raise two interesting questions, though:

  • In the case of Greek vases, how much curvature is enough to qualify as "three-dimensional"? You're right that the bottoms of some 5th-century kylikes come very close to flat, much more so than deeper 6th-century forms, so where does one draw the line? And it seems odd (to me) to argue that it's okay to upload a photo of the interior of a cup when it's not okay to upload a photo of the exterior of the same cup.
  • More generally, if a fundamentally three-dimensional object (like a vase or a piece of furniture, for example) has a small area of two-dimensional decoration on it, does that small area qualify for PD-Art, regardless of the three-dimensional nature of the object as a whole? In other words, would a small painted panel on the back of a chair or the top of a chest qualify? I would assume not, but you have much more experience than I do in interpreting copyright law on the Commons, so I'd be interested in hearing what you think.

Best wishes, Choliamb (talk) 02:30, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

User:Blackman_Jr._II again

There is some sockpuppetry going on with these two guys User_talk:Blackman_Jr. and User_talk:Blackman_Jr. II, you might want to look into it

Reason :

  1. Similar name
  2. Similar interest, they're both interested in Wikipedia Indonesia
  3. Multiple images being marked with deletion template for copyright violation

I have no idea if its the right place to report sockpuppet, but i have successfully reported this guy to you weeks ago OGNelson9 (talk) 16:32, 8 January 2023 (UTC)

Hallo Marcus du schreibst dort als Begründung fürs Behalten "no valid reason for deletion". MfG --A.Savin 21:07, 16 March 2023 (UTC)

OK.
MfG --A.Savin 23:05, 16 March 2023 (UTC)

Hello and thank you for your reply. Basically, years ago I was blocked for some disagreements I had with other users on FP, now I would like to know if I could, of course, ask the community for an amnesty, i.e. the possibility of being unblocked with the promise not to participate in FP and in any case not to have any kind of disagreement with anyone. Is this possible in any way? Thank you. 109.52.113.127 09:38, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Kyle Walker

Hi, I thought it would be easier to reply on your talk page rather than at Stepro's. A quick question: does the author of a work released into the public domain under a free licence have a right to decide what versions of their work are linked (via the 'Other versions' section)? Further, should that be the case, do you think it is appropriate that a description of "bad crop by [uploader of modified file]" be used in the of author field?

And in response to this edit summary: I'd certainly be loathe to see us lose contributors who are uploading high quality photos that they've taken. However, I'm also concerned that describing crops made by editors acting in good faith as "terible" and "that bad" could also have such an affect. Perhaps, though, it's easier to take long-term users who are merely *modfying* content, however inadequate their attempts may be, for granted. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:04, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

Counter-question: Is it necessary to annoy a long-time employee who contributes many rare motives in such a way that he might stop contributing? You shouldn't do everything you can do! Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:20, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
Slightly taken aback that cropping an image and asking a couple of followup questions re the issues that followed seemingly equates to "do[ing] everything [I] can do" to "annoy a long-time employee". But thanks for confirming my suspicion that volunteers like myself aren't valued by many on here. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:56, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

עפרה「Ofra」 16:04, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
Marcus Cyron (talk) 16:09, 7 June 2023 (UTC)

Hwllo. Thank you for tagging files for deletion on Commons. I recently noticed that you tagged File:Gettyimages-1448156173-2048x2048.jpg with the reason I get mad .... Seeing copyright violations uploaded to Commons can be maddening, but that being mad isn't really a deletion reason. In the future, would you please provide a more descriptive deletion reason when you add {{Copyvio}} tags to a file page?

Cheers!

Photos from DGUF

Hi Marcus, I saw you undeleted File:Ulf-Ickerodt-2018.jpg and if you rationale is correct, you may also want to check File:Doreen Moelders beim Vortrag 2017.jpg and File:Portrait Doreen Moelders 2017.jpg. I would like to add that one of my motivations for tagging the images for VRT was that their Impressum states that their documents cannot be used commercially (of course that is only for their website). Cheers. Günther Frager (talk) 19:15, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi Günther. I know Frank Siegmunf in Person, I had already two talks about Archaeology in Wikipedia at the DGUF annual conferences. He definetly uploads images, he is allowed to upload. When he said, these images are made gy himself, then they are and the addition "DGUF" in the exif probably means, that these images were talen with equipment of them. But I will ask him before I restore all the images for a mail to the Support team, that we will not have such problems anymore. Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:01, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

No known restrictions on publication.

DCB (talk) 16:02, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

File:19991121 KOE - Vera Macht 1.tif

Mef.ellingen (talk) 14:39, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

Commons photographers: next virtual meeting on August 5

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm inviting you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, August 5th. We'll have two speakers: Poco a poco will provide us with an update on his underwater photography and George Oates from the Flickr Foundation will talk about the Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) that is currently in the works. If you're interested in attending, please sign up on this page: Virtual Meeting on August 5, 2023.

I hope you're having a great time taking photos and I'm looking forward to seeing you on August 5th.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 15:41, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

Marcus Cyron (talk) 07:42, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

Carlo Pedretti Commons

Hello, I've found two images missing VRT ticket, File:Carlo Pedretti.jpeg and File:Carlo Pedretti (cropped).jpeg. Are they OK?-- Carnby (talk) 06:44, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

I only can guess. But usually such images from 1992, (before the Internet) today in the property of the creator. Marcus Cyron (talk) 07:39, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
So, should I remove the tag?-- Carnby (talk) 07:54, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
I would say yes, but as I said, I also only can guess. -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 13:24, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
File:La Sainte Famille de Jean Gossaert.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Quick reminder: Commons Photographers meeting this Saturday

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

This is a quick reminder that our next meeting will happen on Saturday, August 5th. If you haven't registered yet and you're interested in learning more about underwater photography and “Flickypedia”, please sign up on this page. Also, I invite you to fill out this survey created by the people who are working on the Flickr-to-Wikimedia Commons software. Your input will make a difference.

We haven't had a virtual meeting in a while and I'm so looking forward to this weekend!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 02:15, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

Nach dem Survey kommt: "We are sorry but this survey is currently not available - please come back later." Da fühlt man sich etwas veralbert. Marcus Cyron (talk) 18:05, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

Marcus Cyron (talk) 14:38, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

Liebe Grüße, Socius sociologicus (talk) 20:21, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

Liebe Grüße Socius sociologicus (talk) 13:14, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
Liebe Grüße Socius sociologicus (talk) 14:12, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
https://www.bildindex.de/document/obj21011038?part=37

Ich bin erstaunt, was man alles immer so dazu lernt. --Jürgen Nemitz (HSP) (talk) 10:37, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

-- Martinus KE (talk) 21:49, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

Marcus Cyron (talk) 23:36, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

Danke schön!

@Krd: - this is a bit strange. You have deleted these images because of "No ticket permission since 31 December 2023". What is about the Tickets ticket:2023123110003551, ticket:2023123010005122 and ticket:2023123010004856? All from Dec. 30/31 2023. Marcus Cyron (talk) 16:17, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Gestumblindi (talk) 20:27, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Ah, danke dir. Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:06, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Tickets are in Portuguese and still open. I cannot read the language, but we usually delete files with no confirmed permission after 30 days. If anybody can provide assistance with permissions-pt, please advise. --Krd 07:22, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
I am the author of the article on the artist, and can confirm the content of the authorization in Portuguese is a full and reliable translation of the permission version in English. Ad narragoniam (talk) 14:56, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your quick action and help. Hope this matter can also be solved quickly. Viele Danke!

Dort steht u.a.
Gestumblindi (talk) 10:09, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
Sage ich ja. Marcus Cyron (talk) 14:04, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
