Visual File Change and more than 100

Can Visual File Change display more than 100? Artix Kreiger (talk) 22:50, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

The maximum for non-admins is 100 files, for admins and bots it is 1000 – excerpt from MediaWiki:VisualFileChange.js, lines 1777–1781:

name: 'loadBatchSize',
label: 'Amount of files to be loaded when clicking on more or when scrolling down',

max: ((isSysop || isBot) ? 1000 : 100)

Royal Air Force Badges

Hello. I am in the process of writing an article on Wikipedia about Royal Air Force Badges, mainly because they are commonly called crests and this is wrong. I have an image of the original badge of No.1 Technical Training School that I took myself. It was awarded in 1939, so I assume it is now out of copyright (see [1]). The image is of the goatskin drawing as signed by King George VI. Is it usable? Thanks and regards. The joy of all things (talk) 16:47, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

I am not sure what you mean by "useful"? Ruslik (talk) 20:10, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
Sorry; I asked if it is usable, ie will it be ok because it was issued in 1939, but is still in use by the RAF as it is still an active school of training..? Regards. The joy of all things (talk) 20:16, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
@The joy of all things: If you are correct about the copyright question, then it can be uploaded to Commons. Whether it is still in use is completely beside the point. - Jmabel ! talk 20:19, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

Chosen for deletion.........

Hello:

I noticed there is a notice of deletion requested by somebody called "Hian" as they are not educational, There is a photo of Don Francks well known Canadian Actor, has appeared on Broadway several times, made many films appeared in NY singing at the top Jazz clubs in that City including Chicago,LA to name just a few, this photo was likely the last taken of my dear friend as a few weeks later he passed suddenly,Mr. Hian does not have a clue as he lives another country.

Mr.Hian also requested a photo of a young girl fighting Cancer, this photo gives some idea of Cancer ravaging the body of a child.and provides education of this curse.

There are several photos my self which shows aging of a man through his 70s into his 80s........walking and in a few months in a handy cap vehicle.

Other photos were not added to Mr Hian's list were not put there by me.......the flowers and weather shots were sent to the weather network.

There are a couple of old historic building there that Mr.Hian seems to want removed and by the way one was chosen as one of the best photos that building.

I do not know who this guy is, but if he wants to e-mail me he can do that.

Now here is my solution to his problem, remove everything and make him happy............and he can move on and try to fill his life on a project that he knows nothing about.

If this is going to the wrong department, i'm sorry, please pass on to proper area.

Thank you

@Triggerbit: The problem is not categorization. Krdbot correctly tagged this file as a probable copyvio because it has "external source, no license, no permission." I fully agree. This is a logo which appears to still be under copyright. What made you think it was ok to upload, without providing a free license and proof that the copyright holder authorized that license? Speedy deletion

Hi, how long does it normally take before a file with speedy deletion tag is taken down? In the past few weeks I had nominated several images for deletion due to copyright issues, but speedied them yesterday. I can still see them on Commons. Thanks, Mark the train (talk) 07:54, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

@Mark the train: depending on how convincing is the case presented. Clear-cut above-ToO copyvio is usually deleted in few hours, but I certainly sympathize those sysops who are reluctant do delete over unspecific “there are several copies of this on the web, including a video of the conference”. Insinuations about metadata usually pertain to regular deletion, moreover. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 09:10, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
Depends on the admin backlog; there are 100+ files at Category:Copyright violations just for speedy delete copyvios. ~riley (talk) 02:48, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

When I was browsing on Wikimedia.Commons for Category:Train station platforms by country, found that someone choose "at" but someone else choose "of". For example, you can see the difference between "Category:Platforms at Eslövs station" and "Category:Platforms of Mońki train station" that are using the preposition in names. What puzzles me in thinking about "Platforms of Hsinchu Station" and "Platforms at Hsinchu Station" two names is that I do not know if I have misunderstood the meaning of "at" and "of" two prepositions. Therefore, if I have misunderstood, please correct me!!

I think the preposition "at" can be used in two situations: (1) The train stop at the platform. (2) Photographer standing on the platform to take pictures. As for the preposition "of", my understanding is that YYY is a part of XXX. That is to say, I will understand "Platforms of Mońki train station" to mean platforms is a part of the entire train station. Thus, it should be categorized under Category:Interior of the Mońki train station, and not Category:Exterior of the Mońki train station.--Kai3952 (talk) 13:35, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

I think that's a slight misunderstanding of "at": it just describes the location of the platform. In practice, any platform at a station must necessarily also be of the station and vice versa. So in the case of platforms and stations, you can treat the two prepositions as equivalent.
I'm not sure whether platforms should be considered "interior" or "exterior". Obviously when they're inside a building they're interior, but in many smaller stations the platforms are within the station but in the open air, and then they might reasonably be seen as exterior. --bjh21 (talk) 14:36, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: Further to what bjh21 wrote, some train stations (like the one nearest me) do not even have buildings (as the USCO defines them, that can contain a person) and are just 3-sided shelters, benches, and platforms. Also, if you want to extend your question to "of" vs. "in", consider that platforms generally do not move around like persons, who can be "of" one place but "in" another place.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 18:55, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

I have a question about "Category:Entrances and exits"

I just saw this category "Entrances and exits" during my browse on Wikimedia.Commons. But what puzzles me is, when I see that a lot of categories are named "Exits and entrances", for example: Category:London Underground exits and entrances, Category:Exits and entrances of the Paris Metro, Category:Exits and entrances of MTR stations, etc. I do not know if it is a different meanings between the two, why these categories are all named "Exits and entrances". So which name should I choose to be correct, "Entrances and exits" or "Exits and entrances"?--Kai3952 (talk) 08:34, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

Oh, I forgot to say: This issue is very important to me because it affects the categories to be created in the future.--Kai3952 (talk) 08:46, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: I personally prefer to have entrances before exits because I usually enter a particular multipurpose one before I exit it, but in some cases the transits are one-way due to entry fees / weapon security, exit theft security, or both. I don't think we have a standard.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 09:20, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
Do you mean to say that the category name of Category:Entrances and exits may be a "better" way to name?--Kai3952 (talk) 09:29, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: If there are enough files to support them, I think one-way "Entrances" and "Exits" should be separate categories underneath "Entrances and exits", with multipurpose ones just in "Entrances and exits". Traps and Hotel California will only have "Entrances".   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 12:22, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
I know, but the underground train station(including Metro stations and MRT stations) is not Traps or Hotel California. There are many different kinds of "train stations" on such a small island in Taiwan. Therefore, I need to create a main category that can include several subcategories. Of course, as you say, these two( Category:Entrances, Category:Exits) are "separate" subcategories under the main category. But my question is: If I create a main category, which one should I choose to name it, "Entrances and exits" or "Exits and entrances"?--Kai3952 (talk) 14:47, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
@Kai3952: Let's keep "Category:Entrances and exits" for consistency and chronological/alphabetical order.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 18:41, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
Sorry, I do not understand what you mean exactly. Perhaps another question is related to what you are saying. I said another question is: "If I want to rename on these two category, what should be renamed?"--Kai3952 (talk) 19:50, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

When adding the "Entrance" category, which files will you choose to add is more correct?

I created this category "MRT entrances at Formosa Boulevard Station" is a precise category, and therefore there should be no ambiguities in the category of MRT stations used to classify of the word "Entrance". Also, found there is the same problem with the "MRT entrances at Central Park Station (Kaohsiung)" category which I created earlier. No matter from what angle to take a photo of, the following files is what I think "Entrance":

I know someone tracking my edits because of what happened before(for more info see here). Therefore I know very well what he thinks about "Entrance", and maybe he would think the following files are also included:

The question I want to ask is: Who do you think is right, is he or me?--Kai3952 (talk) 11:49, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

If I want to rename on these two category, what should be renamed?

I found that these two categories seem to have a problem in the naming; that is to say that "Category:Entrances of Kaohsiung MRT stations" and "Category:MRT entrances at Formosa Boulevard Station" need to be renamed to correct the grammar, and thus to express the correct meanings. But my question is: If I want to rename on these two category, what should be renamed?--Kai3952 (talk) 10:13, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

I have new ideas for my question. I know what is MRT, an acronym for "Mass Rapid Transit". But I think it seems weird to add MRT to the "Formosa Boulevard Station" name, for example like:
  1. Category:MRT entrances of Formosa Boulevard Station
  2. Category:Entrances of Formosa Boulevard MRT Station
  3. Category:Formosa Boulevard MRT station entrances
  4. Category:Formosa Boulevard MRT entrances
Therefore, do you think "Category:MRT entrances at Formosa Boulevard Station" should be rename into "Category:Entrances of Formosa Boulevard Station" or "Category:Formosa Boulevard Station entrances"?--Kai3952 (talk) 16:17, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
This is unfortunately the problem with no clear rules on how to name categories so personally I would tell you to use the one you most prefer, personally I tend to use "[subject matter] in/of [location]" because people are more likely to search 🔍 for the subject matter first (or at least I am), this is also the most common naming scheme I've encountered on Wikimedia Commons. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 00:56, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
Are you saying that there are no grammatical mistakes in the category I named "MRT entrances at Formosa Boulevard Station"? My point is that I wonder if I should change "at" to "of".--Kai3952 (talk) 04:57, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
There's nothing grammatically wrong with either "at" or "of" here. Most commonly, in English, you would have entrances to and exits from, but that means using a different preposition for entrances than we would use for exits. - Jmabel ! talk 07:48, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
I thank you two for answering my dilemma. But I still have another question. Jeff G. has said before that he think one-way "Entrances" and "Exits" should be separate categories underneath "Entrances and exits", with multipurpose ones just in "Entrances and exits". If I named the category "Exits and entrances of Kaohsiung MRT stations", should I divide it into two separate categories: "Exits of Kaohsiung MRT stations" and "Entrances of Kaohsiung MRT stations"? Because I think I misunderstood what he said.--Kai3952 (talk) 12:48, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
There is nothing wrong with particularly doing that or not. Think from the user's point of view: will they care? - Jmabel ! talk 16:39, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I know, but I have this problem. Because "Category:MRT entrances at Formosa Boulevard Station" is what I created, and I also created 35 categories that all are the same problem. I would be in big trouble if I'm not going to solve this problem. This is why I will ask this questions.--Kai3952 (talk) 13:27, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
  1. No, you won't be in "big trouble". Please don't exaggerate the importance of this.
  2. Speaking of which: this really isn't an important distinction for almost any user. If you have an "entrances and exits" category that includes both, that's fine, and might be simpler. I presume you have better things to spend your time on than this very minor distinction. I know I do, and I'm now finished with this. - Jmabel ! talk 17:14, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
I can understand what you say. I have been wasting a lot of time in this question, so I decided to follow their approach: Category:London Underground exits and entrances, Category:Exits and entrances of the Paris Metro, and Category:Exits and entrances of MTR stations.--Kai3952 (talk) 13:44, 4 March 2018 (UTC)

My understanding for "one way" is that the passageway have a designated direction, and I also read this article: "en:One-way traffic". Therefore I want to ask: Please see Category:London Underground exits and entrances, Category:Exits and entrances of the Paris Metro, and Category:Exits and entrances of MTR stations. If these three categories to use "Exits and entrances" is right, does this mean that their "Entrances" and "Exits" are the same one?--Kai3952 (talk) 13:27, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

Can i upload pictures that will not be immediately used in articles?

My logic says no; But i see many pictures on commons that are not used on Wikipedia; and this campaign is also a strong encouragement to upload pictures just because they are good: Commons:Photo_challenge

I have many pictures to share about Shanghai that is encyclopedic: Parks Skyscrapers Festivals Technology_phenomena etc. I'm short of words but i know what is notable about this part of the world. I am also translating articles (English to Hungarian) but i enjoy more dealing with pictures. That's why i started uploading images that later might become part of a sub-district description or other article. But i would continue to do so if i know they are not automatically destined to deletion for not being used at the moment.

Szalai.laci (talk) 16:35, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Absolutely, yes. Only about 10% of pictures on Commons are used in Wikipedia articles. While use in a Wikipedia article guarantees that a picture is in scope, Commons' scope is by no means restricted to those photos. For example scans of entire books are almost certainly never going to end up in Wikipedia; of 20 good photos of the same sculpture, perhaps one or two will go there; similarly when someone thoroughly photo-documents a building or a performance. - Jmabel ! talk 16:42, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Please have a quick look here and give us some guidance. Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:00, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

In this case I would like to refer you to Commons:TOYS and you can probably upload the image to Wikipedia as "fair use" (please see the Wikipedia File 📁 Upload Wizard), and then you can restore the image to Wikipedia (as Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons use different licenses), but be sure to read Wikipedia's rules concerning images first, but usually if something isn't acceptable for Wikimedia Commons you would have to upload it to Wikipedia directly. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 07:25, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

You almost certainly can't upload it to Wikimedia Commons, because Commons only accepts free media, and the cover art isn't free. Uploading an image taken by someone else

I want to upload a picture of John Rasko that someone else took. The image is already available online (http://ndlr2018.com/cms/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/JEJRcrop.jpg) and contains attribution info. I emailed the photographer who said that he was employed by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) to take the photo and provide it to Rasko on the understanding that he (the subject) can use it in any manner he wishes. I emailed Rasko who agreed to allow the image to be made freely available on Wikimedia Commons. I can provide my email correspondence with both the photographer and the subject. But note that the attribution info in the image includes the following: © ASCO/Todd Buchanan 2016

Can I upload this image to Wikimedia Commons? How do I go about it? I began the process but wasn't sure how to proceed (and couldn't find a clear answer in the FAQ).

I need to indicate why I'm sure I have the right to publish this image and think I should select the following option: "Another reason not mentioned above." Then I'm lost. Do I use the {{PD-because|reason}} tag? Am I supposed to edit it? Help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quicklemon (talk • contribs) 00:38, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

It needs a license from the copyright holder, which in this case seems to be the American Society of Clinical Oncology. --ghouston (talk) 01:05, 7 March 2018 (UTC)
Agreed. @Quicklemon: permission to use an image, even if unlimited, does not constitute a transfer of copyright. For example many websites’ ToU allow users to download and share their content, but that doesn’t give those users the right to license the material to anyone else. For an image that’s previously been published elsewhere, it‘s always best to register the permission with OTRS when uploading here; for best results the letter of consent should come from the owner’s official address or domain. As for which template to use, that depends on the licence chosen by the copyright-holder; see COM:LIC for examples. We usually reserve the term public domain for works whose copyrights have expired (or are not subject to copyright), but a CC0 licence amounts to the same thin

Hello, It seems some are taking issue with a recently uploaded essay I wrote. My attempt was to add a full measure of research I had conducted during my Ph.D. work to the topic, Maumee Torrent in Wikipedia, but I really do not know how to do this, and there are just too many pages of documented instructions that I find profoundly difficult to follow. Perhaps my work is not suitable for this medium. Sad to say, I thought I was making a significant contribution to this topic. It would be easier for me to publish this through a peer reviewed process at the Indiana Geological Survey. Unless someone out in the ether can assist me in making the connections to the Maumee Torrent pages, I will yield and request that my work be deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.37.97.152 (talk) 17:43, 7 March 2018 (UTC)

I certainly do. Where was it taken? Why does it have that white strip on the bottom? Can we get a better description, since it's not clear what it's of? I don't want to jump to deletion, but that might be the right course.--Prosfilaes (talk) 20:39, 8 March 2018 (UTC)
The grey strip (as it appears to me) is most likely caused by truncation of the file (or other damage that makes it unreadable beyond a certain point). Do you think we can list "restaurant addresses" on Wikimedia.Commons?

Please take a look at this edit. Do you think we can list "restaurant addresses" on Wikimedia.Commons?--Kai3952 (talk) 20:27, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

Yes. Ideally, that kind of information would be held in Wikidata, but the category description is the next best place. --bjh21 (talk) 20:45, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
Well, is it an advertisement?--Kai3952 (talk) 13:15, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
Well, what is "an advertisement" and what is simply "useful data" tends to be in the eye 👁 of the beholder, saying that Google made a huge profit in a certain year may be a fact to some but can be viewed as "promotional" by others, in this case having locations on Wikimedia Commons is useful as addresses can be used to show how a location has changed in a hundred years, or where the franchises of an organisation are. I'm an inclusionist so I would always advocate for more information 🛈, but I can see why some might not want restaurants to turn Wikimedia Commons into "the yellow pages" for them, but as far as I can tell it's harmless. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 07:30, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
As far as I know, Wikipedia in other languages will not allow this. I don't understand why here can be allowed to do so. Don't tell me that only because here is "Wikimedia Commons".--Kai3952 (talk) 04:09, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
I'm afraid that's essentially the answer: Commons is not Wikipedia, and different projects have different rules. Commons has more relaxed policies on paid editing and NPOV than Wikipedia, so it shouldn't be surprising if our attitude towards advertising is different as well. Remember that Commons isn't just here to support Wikipedia. We also support sites like Wikivoyage, of which restaurant listings (with addresses) are an essential feature. --bjh21 (talk) 13:50, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
If the question is addresses, the answer is surely yes. Next week I have a lunch date at Category:McSorley's Old Ale House whose description in the Commonscat is perhaps too detailed but the street address is not part of the excess. Wikipedia, incidentally, also gives the address of notable institutions (including saloons) in the article that describes them. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:50, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
@Bjh21 and Jim.henderson: If there is a telephone number and address in the photo, for example like "File:FEDS Zhongli Store ad wall 20160430.jpg", do you think it is an advertisement?--Kai3952 (talk) 18:36, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
Not necessarily, no. And even if the picture is of an advertisement, that doesn't necessarily make it out of scope. Most pictures of advertisements are copyright violations, though, so the question doesn't often arise. --bjh21 (talk) 19:28, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
I see you said "Most pictures of advertisements are copyright violations, though, so the question doesn't often arise." Can you give an example? Because I think I might have done something wrong, for example: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Kukuan Hydropower Plant01.jpg.--Kai3952 (talk) 09:34, 7 March 2018 (UTC)
An example: Geograph image 877223 used to be on Commons, but it was deleted as a copyright violation. --bjh21 (talk) 12:40, 7 March 2018 (UTC)
@Bjh21: Do you mean that "to see the local law and regulation"?--Kai3952 (talk) 01:30, 8 March 2018 (UTC)
File:Kukuan Hydropower Plant01.jpg was in any case very low quality, and given its nature a claim of "own work" for the underlying photos seems unlikely, so I think deletion here was correct. But see Category:1910s advertisements in the United States for a bunch of in-scope advertisements (probably all public domain), or File:Pascal-colrat4.jpg for an example of a recent one, certainly in scope and properly licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 15:53, 7 March 2018 (UTC)
On the initial point: yes, we can list restaurant addresses, just like addresses of any other building, etc. For most purposes, in a city especially, street addresses are a more useful way to pinpoint a location than geocoordinates. - Jmabel ! talk 15:53, 7 March 2018 (UTC)
@Jmabel: File:Kukuan Hydropower Plant01.jpg is not a photograph of an advertisement. The reason for deletion is that he photographed a display for "six historic photos" of the Kukuan Hydropower Plant. But I don't know if he has copyright on that content. His answer is that the copyright is from "政府網站資料開放宣告." What do you think?--Kai3952 (talk) 01:27, 8 March 2018 (UTC)
Various people raised multiple questions, so I responded to multiple questions.
  • You asked if you did something wrong on File:Kukuan Hydropower Plant01.jpg. I said "[:File:Kukuan Hydropower Plant01.jpg]] was in any case very low quality, and given its nature a claim of "own work" for the underlying photos seems unlikely, so I think deletion here was correct."
  • User:Bjh21 stated, "Most pictures of advertisements are copyright violations… so the question doesn't often arise." I gave examples of where to find advertisements that are in scope and are not copyright violations.
  • You asked, "Do you think we can list "restaurant addresses" on Wikimedia.Commons?" I said "On the initial point: yes, we can list restaurant addresses, just like addresses of any other building, etc. For most purposes, in a city especially, street addresses are a more useful way to pinpoint a location than geocoordinates."
I don't see where that is confusing (beyond the fact that at least three different issues have been opened up in one section here, which was not my doing), but if there is anything in particular I said that is still unclear, please ask me a specific question, instead of an open-ended "what do you think?" - Jmabel ! talk 01:45, 8 March 2018 (UTC)
  • For "restaurant addresses", I see bjh21 and Jim.henderson both reply to me: Yes!
  • For "advertisement", this is because I am not familiar with the policy of Wikimedia.Commons. I see bjh21 reply is: "Doesn't necessarily make it out of scope." My understanding for his reply is: Photo content can have an advertisement.
  • For "File:Kukuan Hydropower Plant01.jpg", this is because I have seen that bjh21 has mentioned about "copyright violations." At the moment I only have this one question and still don't understand.--Kai3952 (talk) 05:35, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello and Good evening,

If I publish photographs of a painting under CC-BY-SA 4.0, can the original painting still be sold and will I still have the exclusive copyright for the painting?

Is there an alternative license that would allow the paintings to be sold and the copyright to be half-kept?

Kind Regards, --Les Yeux Noirs (talk) 19:38, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

A CC-BY-SA license on photos of the painting would license the underlying painting as well. In general, selling a painting does not transfer or otherwise affect the copyright. Help! File names need to be swap

The following two files need to be swapped as they identify the wrong beach volleyball players:

I tried using the move function, but as the correct file names already exist (just need to be swapped), it didn't allow me to complete the request. As a result of the wrong names, the wrong images were also being used on the players' Wikipedia articles (I've removed the images in their articles for now). Please see File:Brooke Sweat and Jennifer Fopma at Hermosa Beach 2012 (2) (cropped).jpg from the same match for reference: The 1.9m tall Fopma is on the left and the 1.73m tall Sweat is on the right. Public Domain

Hi,

Please could someone show me how to search for public domain images by date uploaded, I'm trying to find new public images which have been uploaded.

Thanks in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by Spitfirebbmf (talk • contribs) 14:45, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

@Spitfirebbmf: You may search Special:NewFiles for "PD". You may not, however, spam any WMF project.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:51, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

Can you please give me an example, say, I want to search all new images uploaded on the 7th March 2018 in the public domain. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Spitfirebbmf (talk • contribs) 16:04, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

Spitfirebbmf: There is no definitive way to do that. Special:NewFiles supports filtering results by upload date, but does not support filtering based on the file description. Special:Search does not support searching for files based on upload date, and since there are a number of public domain tags, there is no definitive way to search for files based on copyright status either.
You can search for files whose file descriptions contain the string "2018-03-07" and use the {{PD-Layout}} template. Note that the upload date is typically not mentioned on file descriptions with correct information. (A lot of people incorrectly enter the upload date instead of the date of creation, though.) Also note that the search will only find files which actually use the PD-layout template (normally via a specific PD template). LX (talk, contribs) 18:00, 9 March 2018 (UTC)
You can use Petscan to search Category:Public domain and subcategories for files created between specific time, for example between 2018-02-01 and 2018-02-02. Example: [2] (see page properties for file creation dates). MKFI (talk) 09:10, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Uploading a photograph on a Wiki article

I am new to Wikipedia editing.

I have been updating and correcting an existing Wikipedia article. I wish to upload a photographic portrait of the subject for the article. The photograph was taken by his family and given to me. I have their permission to use it.

So far, when I upload the Wiki page says "something has gone wrong" and will not save it - or include it.

I may be missing the concept here. How can I include this portrait in the article?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Greenwood17 (talk • contribs) 14:31, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

@Greenwood17: here is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. Moreover, your account did not upload pictures neither here nor in en.Wikipedia. This account only tried to upload a PDF which was likely a bad idea. See Commons:Image formats. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 14:44, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
Also, in terms of permisssion: if they own the copyright, they can't just communicate permission to you and have us take your word for it: anyone could claim such a communication about anything. Either the copyright holder needs to do the upload, the picture needs to be published by the copyright holder somewhere else with a free license and you need to reference that source, or the copyright holder needs to communicate permission to Commons as described at COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 16:19, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Wrong description caption on uploaded photograph ???

Hello.

I just uploaded a photo to Commons. Its description caption is suppose to read -- Grand Central Terminal tunnel pantograph, 1907-- but when I paste the link into place in the page text, the caption under the photo reads -- Insert scan from book plate photo of 1907-- which is actually part of the details regarding the upload.

I don't know how to correct this, and have spent over an hour trying to find and repair the photo caption, without success.

Can anyone assist with this correction? The photo is currently in proper position on the wikipedia subject page -- Baldwin RP-210 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin_RP-210 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bbaldwin7 (talk • contribs) 06:48, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

I am trying to upload a recording of the Hail, Holy Queen Enthroned Above church hymn. Am I supposed to tick "This file is my own work" or not? L293D (talk) 01:14, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

@L293D: Did you record the hymn yourself? Are you the singer? Can it be otherwise attributed to someone else? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 05:20, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
@Donald Trung: Yes, I recorded it myself. My issue was that did not write the sheet music and that last time that I uploaded similar files, I got a ton of warnings about my files being "derivative works". So am I supposed to tick "this file is my own work" or not? L293D (talk) 12:04, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
If the underlying composition is not in the public domain (or otherwise free-licensed) we can't have it on Commons. If it is in the public domain, then yes this is your own work, and (if you are using Upload Wizard) add the fact that the underlying work is PD to the "permissions" template after uploading, since the Wizard won't let you add it before uploading. - 15:53, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

Flickr2Commons doesn't seem to work anymore

Google Images

I am trying to add an imgine found on Google Images to an article. How do I know if the picture is copyrighted? Here is the exact link to the image: https://www.google.com/search?q=fenty+beauty&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj129jv9uzZAhWN14MKHZ_8AAUQ_AUIDCgD&biw=989&bih=624#imgrc=WGCwztyAopiXtM: MarsLovesDogs (talk) 23:20, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

In general most all images found on the internet are copyright to someone, often the photographer. Such image must be verifiably under a free license and without such we cannot accept them. You can select a google search with appropriate licenses, look under tools and select "Labeled for non-commercial reuse with modification". The image you selected is not freely licensed, so if you look at the page on the website it is on you will see a copyright notice at the bottom of the page. Some questions

Hey! I just uploaded this image to illustrate an article on the Spanish wikipedia. I have some questions about it:

  • First, is there any styling guide for which typeface to choose for the caption?
  • Second, would the image be more useful if I had uploaded it first without the caption, and then created a different version with it? I'm a newbie, so I have no idea how to do it
  • Third: The image is from my university, it is a frog embryo prepared by them for us to see. However, I was the one to take the photo with my phone, so I assumed it has no copyright, am I right?
  • In which case, fourth, I also have images for the gastrula and other early embryo stages for which I haven't been able to find images on commons. Should I upload them? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marion Moseby (talk • contribs) 08:12, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
1) @Marion Moseby: I presume you are asking about the captions when adding an image to a wiki article. There is no reason to use a different typeface for captions, just type and save it, adding any necessary wikilinks that would give readers better understanding of the topic. Some language wikis may have a specific "Manual of Style" for certain project topics.
2) Adding a caption provide readers with more information, so unless the image is so obvious to not need a caption you should add one.
3) As you state, you did not copy someones photo, so you are the copyright holder and you already uploaded the image with a Creative Commons license we allow. The very act of taking a photo confers copyright to the person taking it, so it is not true to say your image has no copyright; it has and you own it and can license it as you wish.
4) We absolutely welcome images which don't already exist, even different versions of the same subject, so long as they are freely licensed without any commercial or derivative restrictions. So any other such photos can and should be uploaded. Do not take photos of other people's photos or creative works just because you took a photo of their work because it is not really yours.
  • Hope that helps. BTW, please adding four tildes ~~~~, like this to your postings but not to your uploads or article pages. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 10:47, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
    • If by a caption you mean actually placing the caption on the photo (Ww2censor seems to be assuming you just mean a text description on the file page): those are generally discouraged, but if for some reason you must have one, please also upload a version without that. - Jmabel ! talk 15:59, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
I believe the text in question is more of a label than a caption—identifying a feature with an arrow—but regardless, a ‘clean’ original allows for much easier creation of labels in other languages. Also, when the labelled version is saved as a JPEG the underlying image will deteriorate slightly in comparison to the original, which might make a noticeable difference to a contrast-enhancement or other manipulation. You can link to the unmarked image in the “other versions” section of the labelled one (and vice versa). Image annotations can also be used to point out features without altering the photo itself. As for the typeface of a label, there’s no standard, but legibility is the main consideration, and script or decorative styles should usually be avoided. The example seems fine to me.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:48, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

Proper License details/Permissions etc for image upload

I want to upload the album artwork for a music single article i'm working on but I don't know what the proper license/permissions etc are to put for the upload (second image on this page-> https://bts-official.jp/news/detail.php?nid=TIWDDQI2OlM= for ref as to what it looks like). The same image can be found on iTunes and other places online. I've looked at related images used in similar articles but I also don't know how to go about putting the details from those that seem applicable to the image I want to use. And tbqh I've been struggling to properly understand uploading stuff on Commons, not the process of uploading itself but the details to apply to uploads specifically. Can anyone help me out please?

--Carlobunnie (talk) 18:18, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Almost no record jacket artwork is in the public domain, and I see no reason to think this is an exception. Unless can get permission from the copyright holder (typically the graphic artist or the record label) as described at COM:OTRS, we cannot host it.
  • You don't mention where you are writing an article, but if it is in the English-language Wikipedia, it should be possible to upload a low-resolution image directly to the English-language Wikipedia for this purpose. (This in no way involves Commons.) You can use w:Goats Head Soup and w:File:The Rolling Stones - Goats Head Soup.jpg as a model of how to do this. - Jmabel ! talk 19:29, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
Jmabel sorry for not mentioning it but yes it is in Eng-lang-wiki. I didn't know that I could upload directly as I have in the past seen images in articles that were linked from Commons (don't know if they have been replaced since) hence why I thought that was how it is normally done. Apologies if I sound foolish about all this but I'm still learning how everything works. Thank you for replying & clarifying.Carlobunnie (talk) 21:10, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
@Carlobunnie: : Commons is the preferred location for PD & free-licensed images, but non-free images must go directly to the project that is using them, since each project has its own policies for non-free use (and Commons' policy is "NOPE"). - Jmabel ! talk 23:43, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

Photo quality

What in-camera quality setting is advisable and typically used for photos to be uploaded to Commons (eg: High or Medium jpg)? Or, do Commons photo uploaders typically (or invariably) capture images in RAW prior to post-processing and uploading? DonFB (talk) 06:58, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

  • You are welcome either to use RAW & post-process or to use the camera's own settings, but if the latter please use the highest resolution and highest quality available. - Jmabel ! talk 15:21, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

API to fetch images uploaded recently to Commons

I am looking for an API which will help me get a list of images uploaded recently to Commons, much like the images you can find in the "Latest Files" section when you login to Wikimedia Commons on the website.

I was reading up on the MediaWiki API, and found this section which looked like it would do the job. However upon trying it in the API sandbox, I found that it would return images that had been uploaded to Wikipedia. I am yet to find an image as part of the results that was uploaded to Commons.

Is there any way of filtering and getting only images which have been uploaded to Commons via this API? Or is their a different API which I need to use to for this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bluesir9 (talk • contribs) 16:03, 17 March 2018 (UTC)

I presume the files you're talking about are these:
Those were all deleted by Christian Ferrer. You can contact him directly by adding a section to User talk:Christian Ferrer. Alternatively, you can request undeletion at Commons:Undeletion requests. Assuming that these pictures were much like File:Aztec 7.jpg, I can make a few suggestions for how to make your pictures less likely to be deleted:
  • Upload higher-resolution pictures. Modern digital cameras produce images of many megapixels: uploading a tiny version like this suggests that you got the picture from an Internet source rather than taking it yourself.
  • Upload the version directly from the camera. This includes all the details that the camera adds (often called "Exif data"), like what settings were used and when and where the picture was taken. Note that this might be implactical if you need to keep any of those details secret.
  • Add more descriptive text. Explain what event the picture was taken at, who the person depicted is, and so on.
  • Use an accurate date. File:Aztec 7.jpg is dated today, but this page says it was taken in 2009.
  • If your picture is already all over the Internet, do something to demonstrate either that you took it or that it's been released under a free licence. This can be tricky, but Commons:OTRS has some suggestions.
If, of course, those pictures weren't really taken by you then the answer is simpler: stop uploading other people's pictures and claiming them as your own. --bjh21 (talk) 11:24, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Or should I wait until the (OTRS) ticket 🎟 has been processed to commence uploading? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 10:28, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

I've reopened this discussion. I see that Donald Trung has now uploaded about 30 new coin images but in reviewing them I see some coins were engraved Albert Désiré Barre who died in 1878 so all his works are fine but Frenchman fr:Pierre Turin who died in 1968 are a different matter. We may get permission from the website photographer for these images but as derivative works they normally require the permission of the artist, so those are most likely in copyright for 70 years pma per French law, i.e., until 2039. However, if Vietnamese law applies, for works of applied art, it appears such works are copyright for 75 years after publication per Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Vietnam, so anything before 1943 is certainly ok. We need to determine which law applies and if any shorter periods are applicable. Ww2censor (talk) 11:08, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
I was following Commons:Currency#Vietnam where all images of coins from before 1968 applied, as they circulated in Vietnam and not in France I had assumed that Vietnamese copyright laws apply, but I am honestly not familiar with how French copyright © laws work. If there's any doubt just nominate the files you are concerned with for deletion sp the copyright issues could be taken under a wider loop. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:43, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

Can I delete files I uploaded?

Yesterday I uploaded File:South Main Street Residential Historic District, Statesboro, GA, US.jpg through File:South Main Street Residential Historic District, Statesboro, GA, US (12).jpg. I thought that they were in the South Main Street Residential Historic District in Statesboro, Georgia, but I think that they are outside the area. I don't want to have to change the file name and description of each one, so is there a way I can get them deleted? Bubba73 (talk) 19:06, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

You can either nominate them for deletion or add {{Speedy}} to them, though it would be a shame to delete usable images. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (Talk 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:09, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
I don't mind the pictures being there. If I delete the files I can upload them again as a batch, with proper names, descriptions, and categories. Bubba73 (talk) 22:12, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
Just upload them again with the new names etc, and tag the old ones for deletion as duplicates. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 09:15, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

Is this allowed?

Hi, User:Koolkamalkishor has uploaded several of their personal photographs recently, which I doubt will be used for main space articles on Wikipedia. Is one allowed to upload so many personal pictures that are characteristic of social media profiles? I’ve seen before of such images being nominated for deletion. Thanks, Mark the train (talk) 18:42, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

The Miller Red Barn uploaded picture and information

I have been trying to upload a picture to the National Register of Historic places page https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Santa_Clara_County,_California

I have complete all of the steps and the response says that the upload has been successful. But when I go back to the page where the picture should be, nothing is showing.

What is happening and how do I fix this?

Uploading Photo to Article on Wikipedia

I wanted to upload a photograph of the Collins House to include in this link to all of the properties listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places in Essex County. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Essex_County,_New_Jersey

When I clicked on "upload photograph" it brought me to the Wikimedia Commons upload wizard and I uploaded the picture, which I had taken myself. I filled in the required information and I am able to find it in Wikimedia Commons but it still does not show up on the Collins House line in Wikipedia. Is there another step that I need to take before it will appear?

Please advise. This is my first time trying to update anything on Wikipedia!

Mimi Michalski — Preceding unsigned comment added by MimiMichalski (talk • contribs)

  • @MimiMichalski: I assume this is about File:Collins House, Bloomfield, NJ.png. Usually we'd like the largest available copy of an image; is this really the highest resolution you have? If so, what sort of camera did you use?
  • en:Help:Pictures may answer your question. If not: I'm not sure what you mean by "the Collins House line in Wikipedia". Could you provide a link to where you expect it to be? I don't see any record that you've ever edited any content in Wikipedia in any language, so I have no idea where you think the image should appear. My question is about this photo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:R._A._Hardie.jpg

Here is the unfinished page I started about him for some background: R. A. Hardie

I am not exactly sure about when and where this photo was taken, but here are my educated guesses:

  • Likely taken in Wonsan, North Korea OR Seoul, South Korea OR Ontario, Canada.
  • Subject died in 1949 at 84 years old
  • Likely taken before 1935 when Hardie retired at 70 years old and moved to Michigan, U.S.
  • Even likely taken before 1923 (aged 58) when he retired as president of the theological school he founded, the mostly likely location and source of this photograph.

Question: Is this safe to upload to Commons? Coffeeandcrumbs (talk) 01:26, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

The photo is on Wikipedia under fair use rationale, this is not allowed on Commons. You would have to have a copyright release from the copyright owner, and it looks like you don't know who that is. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 04:03, 24 March 2018 (UTC)
Where was it first published? Who took it? You don't have remotely enough information to say it's safe for Commons; if it was published after 1922 in the US, it could be copyrighted in the US, and if the photographer is not anonymous, they could have died less than 50 years ago and the photo still be copyrighted in Canada and Korea.--Prosfilaes (talk) 05:34, 24 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks! I guess fair use will have to suffice for now. I was hoping to use it in a DYK nomination. Coffeeandcrumbs (talk) 06:03, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

When to upload a new Version of an SVG?

I've been looking at the SVG files of road signs for a number of European countries recently and noticed quite a few have what appear to be errors, and I'm not sure if I should go through, correct the errors and reuploaded as a new version. It's largely one of two issues.

  • There's a point or points off the Adobe art board, with no connection to any element of the design, and removing them doesn't change the design of the sign. And their usually several inches off the artboard/design.
  • Off the artboard is an unrelated sign that doesn't appear when rendered by WikiCommons.
If desired, I can provided screenshots to show the problem.

At some point, though I can't find it now, the guidance on when to upload a new version was somewhat unclear, particularly on the first issue, stray, invisible points.
It also mentioned working with the original uploader, which I don't have an issue with, but I'm also not sure how to explain the problem if I take it to them. --The Navigators (talk) 19:28, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

Invalid SVG issue

So, I drew three SVGs in Adobe Illustrator, but they refuse to open in Firefox when you click on 'Original file' or open them again in Illustrator.

When you click on them, you get this error:
<g id="layer1" transform="translate(-387.18712,-225.98514)" inkscape:label="Layer 1" inkscape:groupmode="layer">

I'm not sure exactly what the issue is and how to fix it. The thing that I wonder is if it's something to do with the two faces that were brought over from the original PDF, and are in all three files.--The Navigators (talk) 03:58, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Upload failing

I am having trouble uploading files using the wizard. Everything goes normally until the blue bar completes, and I get the massage 'upload failed'. I have tried different versions of the file, and different files of different sizes, all with same result. The files are png renders from Inkscape, which usually work fine, I have uploaded hundreds of them. How do I find out why these files will not upload now? · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 09:13, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

No idea why the Ungood Wizard fails, but “uploading hundreds of png renders from Inkscape” is certainly a bad practice. See Help:Inkscape. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 09:20, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
Incnis Mrsi They are renders of parts of larger files. I looked at Help:Inkscape and it does not explain your comment. Can you be a bit more specific about why it is a bad practice, and what I should be doing? · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 14:43, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
Uploading PNGs from Inkscape is usually a bad because Inkscape is a vector graphics editor. Commons values vector graphics more than rasterizations. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 07:09, 24 March 2018 (UTC)
Incnis Mrsi, I understand that, but do not know how to save a relatively small selection from a large Inkscape file as an svg like I can do with a png export. Can it be done without undue effort? · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 11:22, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

Photos taken in 2013, why can't I add "2013 photographs of XXX" category?

I added Category:2013 photographs of Tainan to File:ROCAF BH-1900C 1902, T-34C 3435 and S-2T Display at Tainan Air Force Base Apron 20130810.jpg. But someone think photos should not add Category:2013 photographs of Tainan, because has been added "Category:2013 Tainan Air Force Base Open Day". I think what he means is that my edits is "over-categorization". What do you think?--Kai3952 (talk) 16:01, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Category:2013 Tainan Air Force Base Open Day should be in Category:2013 photographs of Tainan, so the higher level category would be redundant. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 16:30, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
I don't think that's quite correct. Category:2013 photographs of Tainan is only for photographs, but Category:2013 Tainan Air Force Base Open Day could also contain videos (and audio recordings, drawings, sculptures...). I would say that it's correct to leave the categories unrelated and put a photograph in both. --bjh21 (talk) 17:38, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
@Pbsouthwood and Bjh21: I understand what you say, but he insisted on removing Category:2013 photographs of Tainan from the file, he even changed my edits directly. Because he advocates that Category:2013 photographs of Tainan should not be added. What should I do?--Kai3952 (talk) 18:23, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

How do I upload a newer version of a file via the "Upload a new version of this file" link?

I clicked on "Upload a new version of this file" link to upload a new version of the file "Ponce, Puerto Rico, roads map.svg" because there was an error in my original file uploaded 21:21, 10 March 2018 (the error was that a segment of a road labeled 505 should read 503). So I choose the updated file from my computer, making sure I named it in my computer with the same name as the original upload ("Ponce, Puerto Rico, roads map.svg"). The upload occurred (it's dated 00:10, 27 March 2018) but the newer version uploaded file doesn't have the update I made. So (thinking I selected the older file by error) I went back to my PC to make sure the file I chose was in fact the updated file, and I verified that it was.

So I figured Commons got confused by my trying to upload a newer version of a file that had the same filename as the original upload, so I tried it a second time with a different filename [9a. Ponce, Puerto Rico, roads map (v9a) - PR-503 correction.svg], but Commons refused to upload it, giving me an "Upload error" and complaining that "The upload is an exact duplicate of the current version of File:Ponce, Puerto Rico, roads map.svg." What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Mercy11 (talk) 00:52, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

@Mercy11: Not waiting long enough for caches to update. Purging, refreshing, and accessing with a different browser/OS/machine can help speed that process along. Sorry for the delay. It looks like 503 jumps over the dam, is that right?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 01:18, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip. It worked wonderful! I'll make sure to remember that trick from now on!! Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 01:25, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi there. Following a suggestion on talkpage of the Wikipedia Marie Tharp article, I've uploaded this image to serve as a suitable portrait. The image is taken from a New York Times article from 2013, where is labelled as a Library of Congress image. After no success in finding the image at the LOC, I contacted them directly, only to be told that ...

"The Geography and Map Division holds a large assemblage of manuscript and printed maps, personal papers, scientific publications, and photographs attributed to to both Marie Tharp and Bruce Heezen. Unfortunately, the photographs are not digitized or available online but they are part of the Library's Heezen Tharp Collection.
Please note that a number of photographs have already been reproduced and are accessible via
https://www.google.com/search?q=%22marie+tharp%22&rlz=1C1GGRV_enUS751US751&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiLpfHNwfHZAhUlh-AKHeUMBFgQ_AUICigB&biw=727&bih=431
May we suggest that you take a look at the top two rows of these images? Please let us know if you need additional assistance."

... From which I take that the item is in their collection but is not available online. Consequently, I downloaded the image directly from the NYT, and then uploaded it here. However, I'm stuck as to how best to describe its copyright status. Possibly, I've overstepped in acquiring it this way — I've certainly overreached in terms of my understanding of licence and copyright. Anyway, any advice would be gratefully received. I shan't utilise the image at Wikipedia until its status is clarified (or it is deleted).

Cheers, --Plumbago (talk) 12:54, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Assuming that the photo was first published in 2013 and the author is unknown then it will be under copyright until 2090. Ruslik (talk) 20:22, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
Plumbago: Not all images available from LOC are freely licensed and I can't even find this one. I've looked around at several sites and can't find any freely licensed images of her, so I think you will just have to resign yourself to using the Lamont-Doherty non-free image. If you can find the source of the LOC image and it is verifiably freely licensed, then you can use that instead but not as well as the non-free because once a free image is found in most situations the non-free cannot then be used. Ww2censor (talk) 21:31, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks both for your replies.
Ruslik — I doubt that the picture was published first in 2013 — it appears to be from sometime in the 1970s, although, to be honest, I can't establish a correct date (among other things ...). That's just the example of use that I have to hand - and it does attribute the photograph to the LOC.
Ww2censor — As the response I got from the LOC indicates, while they have photographs as part of their Marie Tharp collection, these aren't scanned or available online. I guess that's why neither you nor I was able to find this particular photo. I appreciate the point about free vs. non-free, and I'd agree — if I can't find a evidence this is free, the current image should stay.
In any case, it sounds like I can't easily do anything with this photograph. I'll give the LOC (and possibly the NYT) another try to see if they can offer any help. Does anyone know if there's anyone at the LOC who deals with Wikipedia requests? It would seem quite a good idea to have a contact point, but I guess they've got their own fish to fry.

Look at File:Wall 牆 - panoramio.jpg. The given coordinates of the camera location doesn't agree with the photo's content. I think the coordinates are wrong. But I don't know the correct coordinates. What should I do?--Kai3952 (talk) 17:56, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Why do you think that the coordinates are wrong? Ruslik (talk) 20:17, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
When I click on the coordinates and select Google Maps, it shows a location at the "Banqiao Station". Since I have been to this station I know very well there is no place like "File:Wall 牆 - panoramio.jpg" shown. Do you understand what I say?--Kai3952 (talk) 07:20, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
There's a bigger problem than the location – it's a copyright violation. I've nominated it for deletion. LX (talk, contribs) 17:06, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Can we upload an image without having an exact citation?

I have a student who wants to upload some images that were created by the artists Liang Kai and Hakuin Ekaku. The information she gave me is as follows:

  • Figure 1: Liang Kai, The Sixth Patriarch Tearing up a Sutra, S. Song (Chinese), early 13th century, hanging scroll, ink on paper, 73 x 31.7 cm
  • Figure 2: Hakuin Ekaku, Sixth Patriarch’s Rice Mill, Edo Period, mid-18th century, hanging scroll, ink on paper, 27.5 x 42.5 cm.
  • Figure 3: Liang Kai, The Sixth Chan Patriarch Chopping Bamboo, S. Song (Chinese), early 13th century, hanging scroll, ink on paper, 72.7 x 31.5 cm.
  • Figure 4: Hakuin Ekaku, Rice-Threshing Mill, Edo Period, mid-18th century, hanging scroll, ink on paper, H: 32.5 cm.

As far as I can tell, the information that she has is correct and the images provided to me are the above artworks. The only catch is that she got them off of Pinterest and she hasn't been able to completely verify the museum holding information that was provided on the posts. They're definitely from long ago enough that they would be in the public domain and would otherwise qualify as an exact copy of the image, but the Pintrest part gives me slight pause. I have found some information that should help her, but I wanted to verify that it would be OK for her to upload. I'm leaning towards yes, but wanted to check in first. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:41, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

  • If they are old enough to be absolutely clearly public domain, that should be fine. Only issue is if the work is not 2-dimensional (e.g. some sort of frame, three-dimensional scroll-end, etc.) that would mean there is some creativity/choice in photographing it, in which case the photo itself would have copyright. Even then, you should be able to crop out the offending part. - Jmabel ! talk 16:13, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
  • Nah, it's your typical 2-dimensional image like this. (One of the images she wants to add.) Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:12, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
{{PD-Art}} asserts that it makes no difference where the photos came from as far as copyright is concerned, assuming they‘re faithful reproductions of PD originals—and if there‘s been any breach of the source site‘s ToU, that‘s considered a private matter of no relevance to Commons. That said, I think you should still include whatever information you have about the provenance of the photos, pointing out whatever may be conjectural or unverified.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:01, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

I want to upload an image from a portrait photograph that I have in my files (one that I did not take, but was given me by the subject). As far as I am aware, this photo has not been published elsewhere. What kind of attribution do I need to supply? --Patricia416 (talk) 16:36, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi Patricia416,
The copyright owner, probably the photographer, has to send a permission via COM:OTRS. Then you can upload the picture with the license given and {{OTRS pending}}. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:02, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

Document from the National Security Archive

Is this policy from The National Security Archive compatible with Wikimedia Commons' policies? https://nsarchive2.gwu.edu/nsa/terms.htm The document to be uploaded would be https://nsarchive2.gwu.edu/NSAEBB/NSAEBB396/docs/1979-12-12%20Concerning%20the%20Situation%20in%20A.pdf 2003:D0:63D8:6201:40F8:9034:E43:3A2C 20:11, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

I don't think so, it doesn't allow some derivative works and doesn't mention commercial use.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 20:45, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
The policy is largely irrelevant, as long as we're talking about {{PD-Scan}} works. The question is where did this document come from? The translation is almost certainly PD-USGov, but that doesn't affect the underlying copyright of the Russian text, and I don't see any applicable PD-SovietGov (or the like) tags, so I'd think it'd be under copyright for life+70.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:30, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

Duplicated category - How to merge?

Hello,

the categories category:Faber (singer) and category:Faber are targeting the same subject. Whats the best way to merge them? thx --Biha (talk) 10:28, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

Move the pictures from Category:Faber (singer) to Category:Faber with Cat-a-lot and add template {{Category redirect}} to Category:Faber (singer). --Magnus (talk) 10:41, 29 March 2018 (UTC)

Help with renaming file

Hi, Although I've succeeded before, with this file File:NORTH AND WEST (FRONT) ELEVATIONS - Slateford House, Springhouse, (Upper Mount Bethel Township), Portland, Northampton County, PA HABS PA,48-PORT.V,1B-2.tif I can't seem to get it right. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Kalbbes (talk) 22:33, 30 March 2018 (UTC)

@Kalbbes: I fixed the rename request for you. @FocalPoint: How does the rename request not comply with the renaming guidelines?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 01:47, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
Why was criterion 4 applicable? --ghouston (talk) 05:26, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
There's a collection of photos of the same building from the same source, so I suppose criterion 4 can be applied, although I'd pick a name template that included the Accession number. However, there are quite a few similar photos in Category:Portland, Pennsylvania, and making a category for them would be easier than renaming them all. --ghouston (talk) 06:03, 31 March 2018 (UTC)
Now in Category:Slateford House, Pennsylvania. --ghouston (talk) 06:18, 31 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi Kalbbes. All I saw was a blank form yesterday. Now it is fixed and I understood what you meant, I renamed it. --FocalPoint (talk) 05:18, 31 March 2018 (UTC)

FocalPoint, Thanks so very much. Kalbbes (talk) 14:41, 31 March 2018 (UTC)

Adding public domain photo from army.mil

How can I add this photo for a bio that appears in Wikipedia?

https://www.army.mil/e2/images/rv7/halloffame/inductees/cutlip.png — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kirk.hallahan (talk • contribs) 21:35, 31 March 2018‎ (UTC)

@Kirk.hallahan: What makes you think it's in the public domain? It seems to be from the same source as http://www.prsageorgia.org/resource/resmgr/orderofthephoenix/scottcutlip.jpg on http://www.prsageorgia.org/?page=order_of_the_phoenix and http://images.slideplayer.com/27/9250840/slides/slide_17.jpg, but cropped differently. What page is it on?   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 22:53, 31 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello. I don't know what License to choose. The photo of the diploma is intended to be CC-0 - but I don't know about the rights situation of the diploma itself..

--Friedel Völker (talk) 05:28, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

After getting no response - neither here nor at de.wp I decided to mark the upload as CC-0. Correct me if I am wrong. --Friedel Völker (talk) 06:27, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
Presumably {{PD-ineligible}}, no? There is nothing in the underlying diploma that is copyrightable, there is nothing original in your photo that is copyrightable; CC-0 implies you have some rights to waive, but I don't see what those would be. - Jmabel ! talk 16:30, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
I think {{PD-text}}, actually... same rationale, but more descriptive. Jarnsax (talk) 08:00, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
I think so, and I’ve changed it accordingly. — Speravir – 00:12, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
