Administrators are users with the technical ability on Wikimedia Commons to:
- delete and undelete images and other uploaded files, and to view and restore deleted versions
- delete and undelete pages, and to view and restore deleted revisions
- protect and unprotect pages, and to edit admin-protected pages
- block and unblock users, individual IP addresses and IP address ranges
- edit less-restricted interface messages (see also Commons:Interface administrators)
- rename files
- add and remove user groups
- configure Upload Wizard campaigns
- delete and undelete specific log entries and revisions of pages
- import pages from other wikis
- merge the history of pages
- modify abuse filters
- not create redirects from source pages when moving pages
- override the spoofing checks and title or username blacklist
- send a message to multiple users at once (massmessage)
- use higher limits in API queries
These are collectively known as the admin tools.
Siā-khu kak-sik
Administrators are experienced and trusted members of the Commons community who have taken on additional maintenance work and have been entrusted with the admin tools by public consensus/vote. Different admins have different areas of interest and expertise, but typical admin tasks include determining and closing deletion requests, deleting copyright violations, undeleting files where necessary, protecting Commons against vandalism, and working on templates and other protected pages. Of course, some of these tasks can be done by non-admins as well.
Administrators are expected to understand the goals of this project, and be prepared to work constructively with others towards those ends. Administrators should also understand and follow Commons' policies, and where appropriate, respect community consensus.
Apart from roles which require use of the admin tools, administrators have no special editorial authority by virtue of their position, and in discussions and public votes their contributions are treated in the same way as any ordinary editor. Some admins may become more influential, not due to their position as such, but from the personal trust they may have gained from the community.
Suggestions for administrators
Please read Commons:Guide to adminship.
Removal of administrator rights
Under the de-admin policy, administrator rights may be revoked due to inactivity or misuse of sysop tools.
In a de-admin request, normal standards for determining consensus in an RfA do not apply. Instead, "majority consensus" should be used, whereby any consensus to demote of higher than 50% is sufficient to remove the admin.
Apply to become an administrator
All intending administrators must go through this process and submit themselves to RFA, including all ex-administrators who are seeking to return to their previous role.
First, go to Commons:Administrators/Howto and read the information there. Then come back here and make your request in the section below.
- After clicking the appropriate button and creating the subpage, copy the link to the subpage, e.g. "Commons:Administrators/Requests/Username", edit Commons:Administrators/Requests and paste it in at the top of the section, then put it in double curly brackets (e.g. {{Commons:Administrators/Requests/Username}}) to transclude it. Request a watchlist notice at MediaWiki talk:WatchlistNotice, or edit MediaWiki:WatchlistNotice to put up one if you are an administrator.
- If someone else nominated you, please accept the nomination by stating "I accept" or something similar, and signing below the nomination itself. The subpage will still need to be transcluded by you or your nominator.

Any registered user may vote here although those who have few or no previous edits may not be fully counted. It is preferable you give reasons for both Support and Oppose votes as this will help the closing bureaucrat in their decision. Greater weight is given to an argument, with supporting evidence if needed, than to a simple vote.
Promotion normally requires at least 75% in favour, with a minimum of 8 support votes. Votes from unregistered users are not counted. However, the closing bureaucrat has discretion in judging community consensus, and the decision will not necessarily be based on the raw numbers. Bureaucrats may, at their discretion, extend the period of an RfA if they feel that it will be helpful in better determining community consensus.
Neutral comments are not counted in the vote totals for the purposes of calculating pass/fail percentages. However, such comments are part of the discussion, may persuade others, and contribute to the closing bureaucrat's understanding of community consensus.

- Scheduled to end: 18:13, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
I have been editing Wikimedia Commons for over 4 years and have learnt a lot in that time. I categorise images, upload images from Flickr and upload my own images in Category:Photographs by Sahaib. I have made mistakes, one of the most recent examples being when I reverted too much (see here) which I regret very much as I should have known better. That being said, the vast majority of my almost 200,000 user contributions are positive which can be seen by the relatively small amount of talk page messages I have received. Sahaib (talk) 18:13, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
Hello, I will be withdrawing my nomination, thanks everyone for participating. I'm still going to be just as active, and hope to improve the errors mentioned. Sahaib (talk) 21:18, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

- @Modern primat: the many recent deletion notice are about images I uploaded years ago such as File:Wikipedia discord on phone.jpg which I uploaded in July 2021 to use as evidence for Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Tripple-ddd/Archive. I uploaded File:Radiator in Newton, South Lanarkshire (19).jpg in May 2022, see Category:May 2022 in Newton, South Lanarkshire. File:Moreland Climate Cup poster 2021-11-06-MorelandClimateCup-Coburg-JE IMG 7787 (51658633204).jpg was uploaded from Flickr in November 2021 as part of Category:COP26 Protests in the City of Moreland. Files such as File:Hope & Eden at Odessa II (6779337921).jpg File:Warming Up at Odessa were uploaded from Flickr in September 2022 in Category:Odessa Restaurant (East Village, Manhattan). As you correctly pointed out I was most active in 2022, so it would make sense that the majority of recent deletion requests on my page are about images uploaded from that year or prior. Since then, I have been a lot more careful in what images I upload from Flickr or upload myself. One of the only examples in the last 2 years of discussions about images I uploaded in that time being at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Sahaib, specifically the ones that failed COM:FOP Japan as I didn't check to not upload them. However, I believe the deletion of costumed files was inconsistent as they are many similar images in Category:Characters at Disney Experiences which I brought up in the discussion and in an ongoing RFC. The point is I don't think that I should be criticised harshly for this, I again point out the images that have been deleted make up a very small percentage of the files I have uploaded (not sure how many). Sahaib (talk) 07:58, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- I would not hold the deletion of Disney costumed characters against them (I was the deleting admin). As mentioned, there is an ongoing RFC, which I did a second call for in VPC. Abzeronow (talk) 17:33, 29 November 2024 (UTC)

- Strong oppose I checked their participation in DRs and half of them are from this year.Sahaib didn't create any DR this year, an admin did. The reason on all of them is the incorrect usage of {{No permission}}. The most perplexing case is perhaps File:Bola de Nieve.png, a photo taken in the 1950s depicting a legendary musician from Cuba where copyright protection for photographs is 25 years. Apart from their misjudgment Sahaib doesn't notify uploaders when tagging their files with {{No permission}}. Does Sahaib expect people with a handful uploads to check their watchlist every week? Günther Frager (talk) 14:01, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Günther Frager: the user who uploaded the image User:ÑuÑuX, hasn't made any contributions since 21 April 2021 so I don't think notifying them would have made a difference. The photo also doesn't state when it was taken. Sahaib (talk) 14:23, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- It was not only with :ÑuÑuX, as I wrote you didn't notify any user (> 100) this year. Inactive users are not second hand citizens. If you tag their files you must inform them, it is even written in the tag you used. Your justification is rather cynical if you checked their history and consciously decided not to notify them. - @Günther Frager: I did a quick check of some of the discussions and all of the images were uploaded by now inactive users but I can still see, how it is problematic so I promise to notify users going forward. Thanks. Sahaib (talk) 15:08, 30 November 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose the talk page is full of successful DR notices from 2020 until as recently as October 2024. So the talk page is not as empty as the candidate says. We do not need admins on commons that don't know what is free of copyright.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 13:42, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Paradise Chronicle: please see my response above to Modern primat. Whilst the discussions are recent the images in question are were uploaded over 2 years ago in the vast majority of cases which shows I have been very good at knowing what is free of copyright. According to this, I have uploaded 7,385 files, I quickly counted the number of images deleted on my talk page and got about 140 which would be about 1.89%. If excluding the images as part of the aforementioned Disney costume discussion (about 67), then that number falls to about 73 or 0.98%. Sahaib (talk) 17:01, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose. I share the issues raised by Günther Frager. I've only seen admins converting Sahaib's no permission tags to a regular DR, and there's been no recent activity there (except this DR which was created after this nomination). Ratekreel (talk) 17:12, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- Notice that Sahaib didn't notify the uploader form the DR mentioned by Ratekreel. The DR was made at 15:47, less than 45 minutes after their promise to notify users. Günther Frager (talk) 18:50, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- I've manually notified the uploader. Sahaib would do well to install AjaxQuickDelete gadget (in Preferences). Abzeronow (talk) 20:25, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose, the candidacy is premature. In order to ensure uniform application of policies and compliance to guidelines, communication between users in the community is mandatory for Commons to work. The point raised by Günther Frager is prohibitive for a candidateship; one have to show knowledge the mechanics of checks and balances between lambda user operations and the powers given to the sysops (e.g. deletion procedure) before receiving such powers. The user has unfortunately not shown they master the workings. Webfil (talk) 18:23, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- Weak oppose The issue Günther Frager raised and is apparently still an issue signals they aren't ready for the mop yet. If they improve on notifying uploaders, I could support candidacy in a year. Abzeronow (talk) 20:30, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Abzeronow: since @Günther Frager: informed me I have notified User talk:Bartboy919, User talk:LegionBoy69 and User talk:Hoosierscholar (three times). The reason I probably forget to notify the user in question is because it was a deletion request I created and not a no permission template. Sahaib (talk) 20:45, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- I contested the first one. Second one I'd have notified of a copyvio since it looks like a netcopyvio. And I turned one of the third into a DR. Abzeronow (talk) 21:02, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

- A few questions for the candidate.
- 1. A user uploads a photograph from Flickr of the entire Louvre courtyard. I.M. Pei's Louvre pyramid is near the middle of the photograph, but it only takes up 10% of the photograph. What would be your process in license reviewing this photo?
- To check Commons:Freedom of panorama guidelines and compare with images in Category:Louvre Pyramid. File:Louvre Museum Wikimedia Commons.jpg is a featured picture and so the image should be fine if the license {{NoFoP-France}} is used. Sahaib (talk) 21:16, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- OK, would this be the only part of your process or are there other steps involved? Abzeronow (talk) 21:25, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- The first step would be to ensure that the license is compatible with commons (Commons:Flickr files). Sahaib (talk) 21:39, 28 November 2024 (UTC)

- 2. A user uploads the 1924 sound recording by Paul Whiteman's Orchestra of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, is this OK for Commons, why or why not? Abzeronow (talk) 20:13, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- Per Public domain music, which states that "recordings made between 1923 and 1946 will be protected for 100 years after publication", so presumably the recording is still copyrighted until 2025. Sahaib (talk) 09:30, 30 November 2024 (UTC)

- https://xtools.wmcloud.org/ec/commons.wikimedia.org/Sahaib i checked here. and your contributions really got high when 2022. in other years they are relatively normal amount of contributions. my question is, how did you manage to reach these numbers in 2022? i cant believe you did such a work in 2022 with "hand on your mouse". did you use code or something else... i just wonder. thank you for apply here. modern_primat ඞඞඞ ----TALK 21:27, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- In 2022, I created a lot of categories. To create categories and subcategories, I used a combination of what you described as "hand on your mouse" edits as well as Cat-a-lot to move images into subcategories. I used tools such as flickr2commons if I was uploading a large amount of Flickr images. Notable examples from that year include:
- Creating subcategories of Category:Cosplay of Spider-Man by year and Category:Cosplay of Doctor Who by year. I had previously created subcategories of Category:Cosplay of the Teletubbies by year in October 2021.
- Creating Sidemen collage images which can be seen in Category:Sidemen and on the Wikipedia page.
- Creating a lot of subcategories in Category:Photographs of New York City by date. Other users have created more subcategories such as Howard61313, DanielPenfield, Tdorante10, J.-H. Janßen, etc, so I can only give myself partial credit.
- Moving Times Square images from year categories to month and year subcategories (which I mostly created) such as Category:March 2020 in Times Square.
- Creating most of the subcategories in Category:Photographs of Scotland by date (which I continue to do).
- Moving images from Category:Geograph images in the Highland (council area) to about a dozen subcategories such as Category:Geograph images in Thurso. These categories were later deleted along with the whole category structure which had existed for about 10 years in this discussion, I was not aware of the fact that they were temporary categories so I don't believe that this a fault on my part.
- Creating Category:Greenwood Community High School (and subcategories) by uploading images from Flickr.
- Creating a lot of the subcategories of Category:Men wearing glasses by country and Category:Women wearing glasses by country.
- Creating Category:Men wearing glasses and hats, Category:Men with beards wearing glasses, Category:Men with beards wearing hats (and each of their subcategories).
- Creating most of the subcategories in Category:Black and white portrait photographs of men by year and Category:Black and white portrait photographs of women by year (as well as the categories themselves).

Capable, consistently well-intentioned, even-tempered, even-handed, and respectful of existing consensus even when it might not be exactly what she personally would choose to do. Neutral I am a bit worried about the candidate's indefinite blocks on wikitech.wikimedia.org for impersonation / abuse of multiple accounts. --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 16:57, 29 November 2024 (UTC)- That Wikitech account is not attached to the SUL account. That makes sense because, citing Wikitech, "[it] is the only wiki using the LDAP authentication backend, since a Wikitech account was actually a Wikimedia Developer Account. From a technical administration point of view, it has been a uniquely configured wiki, requiring special casing when performing infrastructure migrations and updates". So, that Auntof6 is not actually this Auntof6. Bedivere (talk) 17:02, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- I think there might be a misunderstanding here. Probably someone else created an account to impersonate Auntof6 on Wikitech as that account in question is not attached to Auntof6's main account. I would appreciate an explanation from Auntof6 though. Jianhui67 T★C 17:04, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- (Edit conflict) That's strange. I have never impersonated any other account or abused multiple accounts, but people have tried to impersonate me (possibly related to my being an admin on Simple English Wikipedia). I also don't think I've ever been on Wikitech until just now when I went (without logging in) to see what you were talking about.
