Congratulations, Dear Administrator!
Kelly, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).
Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.
You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.
Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

- Congrats Kelly! If you need any help, you're always welcome at my talk page. I hope you enjoy being an administrator. INeverCry 19:47, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

- Thanks all! (especially @INeverCry: ). I'm going to take some time to read over the instructions for the tools and then I will be helping out. Kelly (talk) 05:35, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- The first thing you want to do is go to Preferences/Gadgets/Tools for authorized users and tick the boxes for the first 4 gadgets and the very last one. You may also want to add the following scripts to your common.js:
importScriptURI('//ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Gadget-markblocked.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); importScriptURI('//en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:PleaseStand/userinfo.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); importScriptURI('//en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/massRollback.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');
- The best thing to remember starting out is that each of your new buttons has its opposite. If you make a mistake with a deletion, you can undelete; if you block someone and they agree to stop doing what they were doing you can unblock them. Every admin makes a mistake now and then, but they can always be fixed. Hope that helps. Those scripts will help along with the gadgets. Be careful with the mass rollback script; I use it for vandals and sockpuppets, and it's fully capable of rolling back 60 edits per minute. Make sure you've got popups enabled to; as an admin you'll need to see who you're dealing with in terms of edits, age of account, and user rights. INeverCry 16:36, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- @INeverCry: Thanks! I tried out my first couple of deletions today. Kelly (talk) 16:42, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- At that rate you'll have your first talkpage complaint before you know it. That's a part of everyday life if you're an active admin. People will come to your page wondering why you deleted their blatant copyvio: most new uploaders haven't a clue about policy. You'll also get some experienced editors who may get on you for a deletion. I'll keep a watch on your talk in case I can help with something difficult. After a while you'll know how things go, and it'll be easy. The deletion requests I file are an easy close BTW - I only do unused personal images for the most part. INeverCry 17:08, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

"3D Artworks"
Could you explain the reasons for wanting to delete images of historic advertising features such as the various Muffler Men that appear along Route 66, please? --Skyring (talk) 22:28, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) See Commons:Freedom of panorama#United States. 3D artwork isn't covered. These Muffler Men were created from 1960 on, so they're new enough to be copyrighted by their authors or the author's heirs. INeverCry 23:30, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks. I read: any public artwork installed before 1978 without a copyright notice is also in the public domain (unless the copyright owner actively prevented anyone from copying or photographing the work until 1978). In fact, the owners of the Launching Pad restaurant (where the Gemini Giant stands) actively encouraged tourists to take photographs, and there would be millions of images snapped by tourists travelling along Route 66 since 1965, many of which are freely available on the web. I suggest that the same applies to all of these statues, which were used for advertising purposes. I think, going by the wording, you'd have to show that for a particular figure there was both a copyright notice in place and that photography was actively discouraged before nominating an image for deletion. --Skyring (talk) 08:52, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @Skyring: - if you're certain that these works were erected before 1978 without a copyright notice, then {{PD-US-no notice}} should be added to the photos. I'm not certain how we would determine that, however. Without evidence, the files may have to be deleted under the precautionary principle. An alternative may be to copy any to Wikipedia that compley with their non-free content policy. With respect - Kelly (talk) 09:04, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
- The onus is not upon me to show that advertising structures such as this were not displayed with copyright notices. No such notices are visible in the many images. The fact that the structures were intended for advertising strongly suggests that photography was actively encouraged. According to the wording above, the test for copyright protection is threefold:
- Installed before 1978
- Has a copyright notice
- Photography actively prevented
- Even if we posit copyright notices discreetly mounted out of sight, there must be some evidence of photography being discouraged to meet the test. A warning sign, for example, given that these things were usually mounted in plain view along busy thoroughfares and a reasonable person would assume that photography was permitted. --Skyring (talk) 09:37, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
- Copyright notice seems to explain it pretty well. Commons does require the {{PD-US-no notice}} license on images where it would apply. Kelly (talk) 09:41, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
- That's as may be. The third part of the test above, according to our own wording, kills your argument. It says, "…the copyright owner actively prevented anyone from copying or photographing the work…" Not just discouraged, but actively prevented. The owner would have to conceal the thing, or station a guard to prevent people taking photographs. I think, before nominating an image of such a structure for deletion, you have to ensure that it meets all three parts of the threefold test we describe. Otherwise it fails and is public domain. --Skyring (talk) 10:31, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
- Can you respond, please? Are you going to be a stinkler and demand an unnecessary {{PD-US-no notice}}, or are you going to accept that structures placed in public view with no restrictions on photography are not being actively prevented from photography. Either way, it seems we need to amend something to prevent perfectly legitimate images from being nominated for deletion. --Skyring (talk) 21:42, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Skyring: - I'm really sorry if it seems like I'm being a "stinkler". But please see Commons:Project scope/Evidence. If you would like the photos to be retained here, I'm afraid you'll have to do the legwork to ensure they have the proper licensing. ALso, see for instance Commons:Deletion requests/Crazy Horse Memorial - we don't host photos of the Crazy Horse Memorial even though it's the largest sculpture in the world and nobody attempts to prevent photography. With respect - Kelly (talk) 21:46, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks. Could you respond to the points I raise above, please? --Skyring (talk) 22:30, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
- I believe I have - in any case, I don't have anything else to add. It won't be me making the decision on whether the photos are deleted, and whoever does probably won't see this discussion on my talk page. Kelly (talk) 22:41, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
- Perhaps this goes to a wider question. Why are we deleting images that are perfectly fine? Regardless of whether it's tagged or not, my Gemini Giant photo is of a structure in the public domain according to our own guidelines, of which I have quoted the pertinent wording above. --Skyring (talk) 23:02, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
- What perfectly fine images were deleted? If your images are perfectly fine, they'll be kept at the related deletion requests. In any event, you've had your say here, and you've been less than respectful. Please direct further comments to the deletion requests involved. Continued posts here may be considered as harassment, and may lead to your account being blocked. Move on. INeverCry 23:11, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

- @Skyring: - look, let's reset the conversation a bit. I like the work you've done on Muffler Men and I find the topic interesting! The issue is that we are advertising ourselves as a repository of free media that anyone can use for any purpose. If we didn't get the licensing correct, but someone trusted us and used the photos in a work for sale and later got sued for violating copyright, it would cause damage to our project. We're just trying to dot the i's and cross the t's here. Kelly (talk) 23:30, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

1st block?
Hi Kelly. Just wondering if you'd like to try a block? Can you block the following account indefinitely (this is a spambot picked up by abuse filters #85 and #113):
TamaraBadham582 (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log)
Click on the block user link above, and that will bring you to the block page. Where it says Expiration: choose indefinite in the drop down list; where it says Reason: choose "bot-created pattern account" (it's toward the bottom of the list of reasons). Then click the Block this user button. Viola! No need to leave a block message since this is an XRumer robot-created spam account. I figured an easy block would be a good start. I take full responsibility for the block. I've blocked around 10,000 spambots here, so I'm 100% sure on this block. INeverCry 20:47, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
- Done! That was easy! I will be doing more admin work soon - just been doing a lot of work with monuments since it was Wiki Loves Monuments month. Kelly (talk) 20:50, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
- Perfect! Thanks. It's always nice to get some safe practice as a new admin. If you ever want to get practice on how to do protections, history cleans, splits, etc, the best method is to upload some test images (blurry pictures of your floor or something like that) and create a couple test pages in your user space, then you can do anything you want with them. You can overwrite a test image with another test image and then try splitting it or cleaning it all you want. One thing most admins here don't realize is that history cleans are one of the most effective ways of fighting sockpuppet/vandal activity. If a page or image is hit by a sock/vandal 10 times, for instance, in just a few minutes you can temporarily delete the page, and then restore all the good edits and revisions while leaving the sock/vandal edits and revisions deleted. It's a great way to deny these people the attention they crave.
In the end, the best admin-related advice I could ever give you is not to be afraid of the buttons. If you feel a block is the right thing to do, or a deletion, do it. You'll be right 95%+ of the time, and mistakes can usually be resolved quickly with unblock, undelete, and unprotect. Don't worry too much about how many log actions you do. Just try not to resign the tools like my former nominee User:Lobo. I felt sad to see him go. Having one of my other nominees, Ellin Beltz, become a bureaucrat was nice though. If you need anything I'm always around...literally... Either here, en.wiki, or in the near future, the Ukrainian wiki, where their writer categorization needs a long and difficult overhaul... You should see how much work is needed for WP:Ukraine on en.wiki in the area of writers... INeverCry 21:40, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

- We've had a decent run of spambots over-night: see here. Yours is at the top - here's what they spammed.
When I was a checkuser, we had a designation for these: "NTSAMR" ("nothing to say about me really", which is the first sentence they often use in their spam messages. They're strangely programmed to do some funny things: they'll set a username like "SusanEmpton09", and then introduce themselves in their spam message as Alan from Chicago; and they announce the most outlandish hobbies like beerpong and chinese checkers, or gardening and paragliding, in their attempt to sound like an actual person. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Hi Kelly. I hope you and your family and friends are happy and healthy. I also hope you're enjoying being an admin here. It's good in moderation, just like a fresh pint of Sam Adams (I'm from Massachusetts originally). Anyways, I come bearing gifts. Too overzealous with Philippines having no FOP
I still show sentiment regarding deletions of several images of buildings and artwork in the Philippines because of FOP issues. And even public domain, ineligible (simple design) works are being included. While deletions made after analyzing the artists/architects who did those and appeared to be still alive, have you forgotten the need for originality of the buildings pictured?-TagaSanPedroAkoTalk -> 13:29, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

VIRIN and duplicates
Hi, thanks for looking at duplicates. If you are marking up a DoD file, the duplicate merge needs to retain the unique VIRIN. Unfortunately files from DVIDS (divdshub) may have an obscured VIRIN in the description, which is often in the duplicate. As we can't think of a way of doing this automatically, this is still going to be a manual fix. See diff for an example. Thanks --Fæ (talk) 08:45, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Fæ: Thanks! I just noticed that the VIRIN can usually be found in the metadata. Kelly (talk) 12:09, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

That is not a public domain release. There is even a ©-sign in there. There is no mention if derivatives are allowed, or only re-use. COM:PRP would allow us to only assume it is CC-*-ND-*, tops. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hi, I had to revert some of your recent contributions (e.g. [1]). Please consider that the OTRS was not in charge before 2007. So please do not demand a permission for files uploaded to a wiki project before that year and for which source and permission was given at the time. If the procedure would be different, a later upload to commons could potentially lead to the deletion of the files in the original project as well. regards --Jotzet (talk) 06:51, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:A home on hillside ave.jpeg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:A home on hillside ave.jpeg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Important message for file movers
A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

File tagging File:Capel Manor House at Night.jpg
This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Capel Manor House at Night.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Capel Manor House at Night.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

File:Motorola MicroTAC II Platinum.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
