Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. --Siebrand 11:37, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Ajanta.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Ajanta.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-3.0 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Swaminarayan
[edit]Hallo, I have put Category:Swaminarayan back into Category:Hindu deities and Category:Swaminarayan Sampraday. As many pictures and media files as possible should be moved into the right subcategories. Probably one should delete Swaminarayan, if we don't want to call him a Hindu deity in general --Durga (talk) 10:11, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:53, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.
If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.
It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.
You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.
Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

File:Khodiyar.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) File tagging File:Somaskanda thirunageswaram.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Somaskanda thirunageswaram.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Mahavidya
[edit]Not all the ten. Bengali Hindus mainly worship the first two Mahavidyas (Kali and Tara) and their other forms like Smashankali, Rakshakali etc. Other eight Mahavidyas are not widely seen in Kolkata Kali Puja or Durga Puja pandals. Shodashi, Chhinnamasta, Bagalamukhi and Kamala are not rare, but Bhuvaneshvari, Bhairavi, Dhumavati and Matangi are. There are some Dasamahavidya temples in Kolkata; but taking photographs there is, regrettably, forbidden. I'll try to catch some during the Pujas this year. But you have to wait till Diwali. Jonoikobangali (talk) 09:46, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
- Here you shall find some of the Mahavidyas' photos, as requested. I couldn't post Kamalatmika's photos for some inavoidable reasons and I'll send Tripura Sundari's photo later. Arnab Dutta (talk) 08:51, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
Copyright status: File:Brooklyn Museum - Krishna Battles the Demoness Putana Page from an Unidentified Hindu Manuscript.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Brooklyn Museum - Krishna Battles the Demoness Putana Page from an Unidentified Hindu Manuscript.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

- Thanks for your reply. Although the two images are from the same source, they appear to be different scans, and have a different colour balance (Perhaps User:Abhishekjoshi modified it before upload, or that was all that was available in 2008).
- Nor does it matter that they are scans/photos of the same artwork, they are different versions - just as we don't delete the initial upload of File:Kurma, the tortoise incarnation of Vishnu.jpg just because you have made an edited version, we don't delete other versions either.
- One image is not just a scaled up/down version of the other, they are different versions that happen to be different sizes. For more explanation see the discussion at User_talk:Romaine#Duplicate_processing --Tony Wills (talk) 20:53, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Clarifications
[edit]I notice that some of my upload(s) on Wikimedia Commons have been altered and/or nominated despite the fact that..
(1) I legally own most of the images that I have uploaded on Wikimedia Commons, (2) The photographs were taken either my me or by a family member (including ancestors) and I have got the original negatives of most of them, (3) The photographs show our estates and/or residences and the visitors (including Gandhi, Nehru) with a family member, (4) The artist (painter) Beohar Rammanohar Sinha (1929-2007) was my father and the litterateur Beohar Rajendra Simha (1900-1988) was my grandfather, (5) Following my father’s death, I have lawfully inherited all his artworks and paintings solely by way of his WILL which unambiguously authorizes me to handle and use them whichever way I feel appropriate, (6) Even during his lifetime, I was managing all his artworks as <abrsinha@yahoo.co.uk>, (7) Without imposing any conditions, or restricting anyone’s rights, but purely to keep a track of image/file usage outside Wiki, the phrase “Seek consent from <abrsinha@yahoo.co.uk>…” has been inserted. I fully realize that this doesn’t mean much because the uploaded media is now in public domain and freely reproducible.
Hope that the above clarifies and addresses administrators concerns, and that they will now remove all ‘nominations’ from my upload(s). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abrsinha (talk • contribs)

Sharabha has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

[edit]Hello, Please do not create new speedy deletion requests. Better add them to one of the already existing DRs, so that we discuss these together. See also Commons talk:WikiProject India#Ravi Varma press. Thanks, Yann (talk) 05:33, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
I have proof it is painted by Raja Ravi Varma. here it is http://www.ravivarmaoleographs.com/puranas/puranas2.html. If you are doubt I upload new version.
And statement from website shows it is under PD "This website is exclusively for Ravi Varma’s Oleographs, which is a result of more than 15 years of collection made throughout India. Ravi Varma has painted hundreds of paintings which have spread throughout India (in Palaces and Museums) and other countries like England ,USA, etc.,. Only a portion of Ravi Varma’s paintings got printed as Oleographs. These Oleographs are from 80 to 115 years old, which are hosted as a website. This website is the single largest collection of Ravi Varma's oleographs in India, it says more about Ravi Varma, his style and India’ s cultural heritage . Will serve as a collectors guide (for antique lovers) and help students of art and critics. The development of Indian art cannot be completed without the mention of Ravi Varma’s Contribution. Like many valuable aspects which have been spoken less about Indian heritage, Ravi Varma’s is one such. "--Donaldduck100 (talk) 06:55, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
[edit]Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,

Important message for file movers
[edit]A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

- Ok, thanks a lot for clearing my confusion 245CMR (talk) 08:35, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry sir but you have mistakenly moved it. The book which you referred uses a lithograph version of the painting. The painting one is Shakuntala (confirmed by Raja Ravi Varma's collectors) while lithograph version is Sita (confirmed by books and website) 245CMR (talk) 13:08, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
Redirect after moving a file
[edit]Hi. Typically we would retain redirects for files that have been on-site for many years and are moved. Redirects are cheap to the system and should not be causing problems. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:03, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
- billinghurst, the redirect is an incorrrect name so needs to be deleted. --Redtigerxyz (talk) 12:19, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
- It has been around that long, and it is not that misleading. We have no idea what links to it out in the wild, so I think that we can leave it. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:23, 24 January 2021 (UTC)

This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Angkor Wat Dritte Galerie 22 corrected.jpg.
Thank you. |

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!
[edit]Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Topic suggestions.
[edit]it is necessary added Vishvarupa (Universal being) to affiliation to vishnu , whole bhagavd gita and mahabharata says that all, all text says that Vishnu Avatar purpose is to restore the cosmic order balance b/w good and destroy evil, add that Restorer of Dharma to vishnu in main info, source provided under article given below. Try these things : Removed so much info on shiva main info box , if you didn't accept then add related to vishnu for main infobox such Restorer of Dharma before Bestower of Karma and The Universal Being (Vishvarupa) like when added Nataraja (cosmic dancer) to shiva, add related similar info to Vishnu like same as to edits as shiva. Links are provided under article when same edits to shiva @Redtigerxyz Che Krishna (talk) 16:30, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
