Template:Artwork
Hello Jarekt. From where we can translate "ObjectLocation" label on Template:Artwork? Thanks on advance --Alaa :)..! 20:49, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- Alaa, It took me a while to figure out what that was and where it come from but that translation comes from Module:i18n/coordinates, as it is also used by Object Location template. --Jarekt (talk) 21:28, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks Jarekt, the problem that it's already translated to Arabic since your edit on 2014, but when you use Arabic interface, it's appear "ObjectLocation" on Template:Artwork. (FYI @Michel Bakni: ) --Alaa :)..! 21:36, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- Alaa, I think it is broken in all the languages, even English.--Jarekt (talk) 21:51, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- Ummm Aha, maybe it's related to error on
tag='ObjectLocation',
at Module:Artwork? --Alaa :)..! 21:54, 2 January 2021 (UTC)- Alaa, I think I found the issue. It was not actually broken because for artworks that used that label it would show up but was broken in the "demo" mode when I display labels even if the fields are empty. --Jarekt (talk) 22:11, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

- Oh! Thanks a lot Jarekt. We appreciate all of your help. Thanks again --Alaa :)..! 22:14, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

- Now there's
Breaking change
I Jarekt, with your change [1], using this template does not link to Wikidata anymore but to a local Wikipedia through the English Wikipedia...
For instance, on Template:Q I see in "Universe (Q1) gives univers (Q1)" a link to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fr:Univers where I previously had https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1
It seams a breaking change to me... Is there an alternate template which would provide the previous behavior?
Thanks in advance. Best regards. Peter17 (talk) 20:49, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
- Peter17 That was not intentional. and I restored previous behavior. Thanks for pointing it out. --Jarekt (talk) 04:02, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
- Tank you very much! Peter17 (talk) 08:36, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can choose to be reminded when you have not added an edit summary. This can be done in your preferences. This could conflict with the CAPTCHA. This has now been fixed. [2]
- You can link to specific log entries. You can get these links for example by clicking the timestamps in the log. Until now, such links to private log entries showed no entry even if you had permission to view private log entries. The links now show the entry. [3]
- Admins can use the abuse filter tool to automatically prevent bad edits. Three changes happened last week:
- The filter editing interface now shows syntax errors while you type. This is similar to JavaScript pages. It also shows a warning for regular expressions that match the empty string. New warnings will be added later. [4]
- Oversighters can now hide multiple filter log entries at once using checkboxes on Special:AbuseLog. This is how the usual revision deletion works. [5]
- When a filter matches too many actions after it has been changed it is "throttled". The most powerful actions are disabled. This is to avoid many editors getting blocked when an administrator made a mistake. The administrator will now get a notification about this "throttle".
- There is a new tool to build new skins. You can also see existing skins. You can give feedback. [6]
- Bots using the API no longer watch pages automatically based on account preferences. Setting the
watchlist
towatch
will still work. This is to reduce the size of the watchlist data in the database. [7] - Scribunto's file metadata now includes length. [8]
- CSS and JavaScript code pages now have link anchors to line numbers. You can use wikilinks like w:en:MediaWiki:Common.js#L-50. [9]
- There was a new version of MediaWiki last week. You can read a detailed log of all 763 changes. Most of them are very small and will not affect you.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 January. It will be on all wikis from 14 January (calendar).

Deletion request withdraw?
Can I withdraw this? If so, please explain how to do it?-- Ma▀▄Ga 18:51, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- User:MaGa, I do not know if there is a process for that, so I just closed the DR. --Jarekt (talk) 19:56, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you very much.-- Ma▀▄Ga 06:46, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
Please could you kindly help me with the above category? I have created it with the correct information (I am currently in the process of creating an article on Picken and have done the research). I then discovered that there was already a category called Thomas Picken, which contained a wikidata infobox with all wrong information, and that category's categories were all wrong too. I have transferred all the files from Thomas Picken to Thomas Ashburton Picken, and have made Thomas Picken into a redirect. However I do not know how to fix the Wikidata infobox. I have tried to do that in the past and failed - I don't have the skills. That infobox needs to be renamed or replaced, because it contains the wrong title and wrong information. (Just to reassure you, there were not two Thomas Pickens working at Day & Son, so we know it is the same lithographer.). Thank you. Storye book (talk) 18:06, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
I should add that the Authority Control information, nationality, occupation and sibling in the faulty infobox are likely to be correct. It's the birth/death dates and the Australian death place that are wrong. The work period start is probably 1834 (not 1838), when he was a teenager - a bit of a prodigy who got a scoop when the Houses of Parliament burned down. Storye book (talk) 18:23, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
- Update: I don't know if you helped with this, but if you did - thank you. The infobox has now appeared in the category, and I was able to correct most of the errors in it, now that it is there. I can't get the date and place of birth to show, but that doesn't really matter. Storye book (talk) 20:58, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
- Storye book, Sorry I missed your initial message, and if someone helped it was not me. I noticed you managed to work with Thomas Ashburton Picken (Q23653061). I am concerned that Thomas Ashburton Picken who lived 1818-1891 [10][11] might not be the same person as Thomas Picken who lived 1815-1870 [12]. All the Identifiers (statements in Identifiers section) are for the second guy. If they are different people than we will need 2 items and 2 commons categories. --Jarekt (talk) 15:30, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, Jarekt. I understand your need to be careful and I respect that, but I am certain that they are the same person. What has happened is that nobody knew the facts because nobody had done the research. (1). Somebody assumed that the dates when T.A. Picken worked/flourished (1830s-1870s) were his birth and death dates, then everyone copied that without checking it. (2). Lithographer T.A. Picken, brother of lithographers Andrew Picken and James Canning Picken and son of novelist Andrew Picken occurs in both biographies so they both have to be the same person. (3) Thomas Picken and Thomas Ashburton Picken both worked consistently through their career as a lithographer for Day and Haghe (later Day & son) a printer of lithographs; again it has to be the same person. (4) The census bears out that Thomas Ashburton Picken is the same as Thomas Picken. (5) As for the emigration to Australia and dying there in 1870 story, that appears to stem from some Australian's genealogy blog, and that appears to be a family historian conflating their Australian relative with the London lithographer. I have so far found many lithographs/engravings by T.A. Picken, as you will have seen (and I have more to add), but none of them are of Australia. I have categorised all his pictures under their country-location, so that you can see that Australia is missing. Even so, there is no evidence that he ever went abroad, as most of his lithographs appear to be copies of other people's artwork. I have citations for all this. So please be reassured. If we create a second ID for this one person, we will be making matters worse. All this has come about because nobody has bothered to do the research before - probably because the resources have only become available online in the past couple of decades, and all the art collectors and dealers out there have been copying each other's inadequate information. I have come across this type of situation before. Storye book (talk) 17:23, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
- Storye book, I "studied" Thomas Picken for 20 minutes and concluded that they might be different people, or they can be the same person. You studied him much longer. I will not take any actions to separate them. But It would be great if you could write an Wikipedia article about him and if possible add sources to Wikidata statements (I can help with that if needed). On Wikidata incorrect published data (with references) should not be removed, only "depreciated" (see d:Help:Ranking to learn how). --Jarekt (talk) 03:13, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
- Don't worry, I've already half-completed my article on TA Picken, and I hope to publish it this month. However, as you may know, I tend to do as much research as I can before publishing, and there is more out there to find, so I'm not publishing immediately. If you have seen "my" articles, you will know that I reference everything. I'm still getting the commons category for TA Picken together, because this will bear on the article. This artist is in a lot of official public collections. I also have to do more work on some previous stuff I did for Commons, which is more urgent. We are all working hard out here! Thank you for your kind help so far. Storye book (talk) 10:59, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
- Update. FYI the article w:Thomas Ashburton Picken has now been published. I have taken your concern about Thomas Picken having two possible identities very seriously, and have explained the article content on the talk page. I have done this so that you and anyone else who may be concerned about the ID of Thomas Ashburton Picken may respond accordingly. I hope this will encourage others to research the matter more widely. Thank you for this prompt, and please be reassured that I have by no means ignored your views. All the best. Storye book (talk) 15:27, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
- Storye book Congratulations, that looks like very detailed and well researched article. If you are interested updating Wikidata page would go a long way of setting his record straight. I can help if you have any questions. Also, in 50+ references you looked through are there any depictions of the Thomas Ashburton Picken himself? --Jarekt (talk) 23:11, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you - I am relieved that the article is going to be useful. Of course, the main motivation for me has been that the pictures are such a joy. There are still plenty more out there, to be gathered in for Commons. I have had a go already at the Wikidate page, but my skills are inadequate there, although I did make the basic changes. Last time I looked, it was correct. The problem IMO now is the set of sources in the authority control box. I have looked at all of them, to see whether I am allowed to correct any of them or contact the sources. I could not correct them myself, but I have sent messages to two of them, giving correct birth/death dates and referring them to the WP article. I do not know how to correct the rest - hopefully if a respected source corrects its info, the rest will follow suit. And no, sadly, there does not appear to be any picture of any of that Picken family out there. If anyone reading this can tell me where I should look, I should be happy to do so. Sometimes portraits are retained by descendants, but as far as I can see only the sister Eleanor Emma (known as Emma) married, and I have not attempted to trace descendants. I suspect that T.A. Picken was not close to Emma in later life, because he and his brother James ended up in an almshouse, when in those days their family should normally have taken care of them. I'll have another look at the Wikidata page to see if I can add any more without making a mess of it. Cheers, and thank you for the support. Storye book (talk) 10:36, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 January. It will be on all wikis from 21 January (calendar).
Future changes
- The Growth team plans to add features to get more visitors to edit to more Wikipedias. You can help translating the interface.
- You will be able to read but not to edit Wikimedia Commons for a short time on 26 January at 07:00 (UTC). [13]
- MassMessage posts could be automatically timestamped in the future. This is because MassMessage senders can now send pages using MassMessage. Pages are more difficult to sign. If there are times when a MassMessage post should not be timestamped you can let the developers know.

Create button for paintings and linking complete collections
Hi Jarek, you build the nice logic to add missing statements to a Wikidata item based on what is in the artwork template. Maybe also nice to show this button when the file isn't linked to a Wikidata item yet so someone can create the missing painting? I just finished the last ones in Category:Google Art Project paintings and in about half of the cases I had to create a new item on Wikidata. I just wonder how we prevent people from creating a ton of duplicates on Wikidata? I know what painting collections are complete on Wikidata and we have a nice overview. Maybe just keep a curated list of these collections here? If a file is in one of these collections, no create link should show up. We could even add a tracker category so it's much easier to find images of paintings that still need to be matched to Wikidata items. What do you think? Multichill (talk) 11:26, 27 December 2020 (UTC)
- I can create a button to create new items. I have done it before with creator templates. However clicking that button will not add wikidata item ID to the file, so you still have to copy it and add it manually. I found that equally easy I can click a button to create new item, copy that ID and add it to the file and than copy all the properties. However if you can come up with a sequence of steps that can complete the sequence faster I can implement item creation with a button. The idea of excluding some collections is quite doable. I would create a page in "data" namespace with all the done collections: I can access it and adding a new one does not trigger refresh of all the pages using Artwork template. --Jarekt (talk) 03:41, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
- That would be nice! I still have the robot running every night to add missing links so if people forget to add the backlink, the robot should just pick it up.
- List in data namespace sounds good. More easily find paintings for which we probably already have an item has been on my wishlist for a while. d:User:Multichill#Indexed is probably the best starting point. Multichill (talk) 11:28, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thinking about this a bit more. I was browsing through Category:Paintings without Wikidata item and ran into File:Justus Sustermans - Portrait of Mattias de' Medici.jpg. Based on the creator and the institution search can be pre-filled making it easier to find the right painting. Multichill (talk) 17:42, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
- Multichill, I think I can do something with the search. We can probably use , or for it. As for creating new items. I can make the creation link hidden, as I did for Creator template: the way it works is that you can open a page and add word "Create" to Wikidata field, than if you preview the file you will get and clicking on it ( open in a new tab works better) will create a wikidata item and you can copy the q-id since you are already editing that file. By the way, can you help me with your d:Q22257296 and d:Q22257300 items? I was lately curating a list of woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer, (see w:Talk:List of woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer/dynamic list and w:List of woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer) and those 2 are two odd-balls I cant find anything about since there is very little metadata and the source links are dead. --Jarekt (talk) 13:47, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
- Sounds good! How do you want to format the data file by the way? I started one at Data:Completely indexed painting collections.tab. Is that something you can work with?
- Regarding the Dürer woodcuts. @Spinster: do you still have the original metadata from MSK Gent? I doubt we're able to add a lot more useful information as long as no collection online is available (again). Multichill (talk) 21:32, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
- Hello Multichill and Jarekt, I did indeed find the original dataset but it's minimal - we inputted all available data in Wikidata and didn't see/receive an image. Can't find info on arthub.vlaamsekunstcollectie.be either. Maybe a tweet or email to the museum may be a last straw? Cheers, Spinster (talk) 07:59, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
- Spinster, Thanks for checking. d:Q22257296 is a 1510 woodcut with title "Die Vertreibung aus dem Paradis" and must be the same as Expulsion from the Paradise (Q18338581) since Durer did only one woodcut depicting expulsion from paradise. The d:Q22257300 is undated woodcut with title "Die Auferstehung" and Durer had probably a 5 or 6 woodcuts depicting resurrection, so it is unclear which print does this item refer to. --Jarekt (talk) 19:37, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

- Multichill, It took a while but today I managed to create a first painting item from Artwork/sandbox template: Still Life with Cooking Utensils (Q104668430). You can try it by switching from Artwork to "Artwork/sandbox" and adding magic word "CREATE" to wikidata field. I still need to test it and improve it a bit, but it is moving in the right direction. I will also add a search capability at the same time. --Jarekt (talk) 05:00, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
- Looks good at Portrait of Three Musicians of the Medici Court (Q104691454), it's just that the instance of (P31) painting (Q3305213) is missing. Can you add that too? Multichill (talk) 20:33, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill, A lot has changed in Module:Artwork/sandbox:
- I added capabilities of adding instance of (P31) statements if artwork has "object_type" field with string matching values in Module:I18n/objects/data
- I added a bunch of icons to files without wikidata id: prefilled cirrus search, prefilled SPARQL query and a + icon to add items. The searches have a lot in them and might need to be trimmed down for individual files
- Add wikidata item only works if Institution wikidata ID is not a painting on Data:Completely indexed painting collections.tab list.
- I have been doing a lot of testing and the code seems to work fine. Can you try it too before I publish? Also can you look into File:'Mourning, Brittany' by Charles Cottet, Cincinnati Art Museum.JPG file - it is a painting which I can not find on Wikidata from Cincinnati Art Museum which is on your list. --Jarekt (talk) 05:29, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
- You have been busy!
- Painting seems to be still be missing, see The woods at Delhoved near Lake Skarrit. (Q104759273)
- I would remove the language ("English: "). Makes it too narrow and not sure if it actually works. Maybe better to update the mouse-over labels to "Wikidata search (Cirrussearch)" and "Wikidata query (SPARQL)".
- Can you add a tracker category for the files that match Data:Completely indexed painting collections.tab? Gives a good todo list (after a bunch of null edits).
- The painting was using the wrong painter. Now it shows up in both search and query. Multichill (talk) 10:57, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
- I see you deployed the changes. Great! Just tried some in Category:Paintings from completely indexed collections and it was really easy to match them up. Wouldn't Category:Paintings without Wikidata item from completely indexed collections be a better name for the category? Multichill (talk) 21:46, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
- I noticed at File:Girl Teasing a Boy attributed to Bernhard Keil Mauritshuis 825.jpg I had some trouble finding Girl Teasing a Boy (Q28113408). That's because the creator (P170) is currently set to anonymous (Q4233718) instead of Q259393. Logic here probably never got updated after we switched the attribution logic on Wikidata. Can you have a look? Multichill (talk) 22:06, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill, I thought I had a long post here after the deployment, but apparently I did not click save. I was considering Category:Paintings without Wikidata item from completely indexed collections but decided it to be too long and too hard to comprehend, so I added description in the category instead. I matched bunch of files with Wikidata IDs during testing already and it is much easier now. If you have a chance the first 5 files in the category (from Cincinnati Museum) are files I could not match. As for attribution logic, I only recently noticed alternative data model. I think I can parse both version when reading from Wikidata, but I think I still write using the original data model. Is the new data model preferred now. If so, I guess I switch my code. --Jarekt (talk) 22:18, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
- It was a happy surprise to see it all working! No strong opinion about the category name. I'm currently just checking files to find any bugs, will have a look at Cincinnati Museum later. I do recall something about problems with importing. As for attribution, that was completely switched, see d:Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Attribution. Multichill (talk) 22:28, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
- Ok I will make sure I am using the new model. This might require some messy code changes as I was handling all name modifiers ("workshop of", "circle of", "school of", "studio of", "or follower", "or workshop", "and workshop", "attributed to", "after", "formerly attributed to", "follower of", "manner of") the same way and now one will need a different code. But the model makes more sense , so I guess it is improvement. I also still have issues with "nice" title extraction since many different formats are used on Commons. I will also like to provide wider range of item descriptions when creating new items: at the moment I can only handle paintings. I am not sure how useful SPARQL query is yet. So far I only use it for cases where I can not find a painting and try to display all the items with images matching some condition. --Jarekt (talk) 22:43, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
- Can't this be solved in a much easier way? Just ignore the "Attributed to" part in and pretend it's just Creator:Bernhard Keil?
- I wrote a little bot to fill up Category:Paintings from completely indexed collections. Let's see how many files it picks up. If it gets too large we might need to break out some of the collections. Let's wait and see. Multichill (talk) 20:13, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- Can you have a look why File:Berthe morisot, paesaggio di pianura, 1877-78.JPG isn't showing up in the category? I assume it has something to do with the ' in Institution:Musée d'Orsay. Multichill (talk) 21:19, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
- When I open File:Berthe morisot, paesaggio di pianura, 1877-78.JPG I see Category:Paintings from completely indexed collections as one of the listed categories. --Jarekt (talk) 01:27, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
- Me too, that's strange. I either overlooked it or something is lagging.
- Something else, I'm quite happy that User:Multichill/Same image without Wikidata/Wikidata creator, institution and inventory number match works again now that I have a much smaller category to work on! Multichill (talk) 19:40, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
- User:Multichill/Same image without Wikidata/Wikidata creator, institution and inventory number match is good. It is much faster way of adding wikidata IDs than with my searches. It would be even faster if the you use version of MediaWiki:AddWikidata.js that does not need confirmation. --Jarekt (talk) 03:22, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- The confirmation is intentional because otherwise it could be used to trick people into doing an edit by having them click a link.
- Can you do the same logic for Data:Completely indexed painters.tab and Category:Paintings by completely indexed painters? Here I also included a link to a list with all the paintings by a painter. Maybe you can include that so it's easy to lookup a painting? Multichill (talk) 18:51, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill, Sure, will do. By the way I think I fixed the QS codes for the attributed artists. I also found a list of Creator modifiers (which can be added to any creator template) which are not handled at the moment: "studio of", "or follower", "or workshop", "and workshop", "formerly attributed to". The first 4 I do not know if we have a good way of modeling and the last one I think we suppose to model as attribution with depreciated rank, which I do not think I can do with QuickStatements. Any ideas about modeling those? --Jarekt (talk) 20:06, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

- You have been busy!
- Multichill, A lot has changed in Module:Artwork/sandbox:
- Looks good at Portrait of Three Musicians of the Medici Court (Q104691454), it's just that the instance of (P31) painting (Q3305213) is missing. Can you add that too? Multichill (talk) 20:33, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Good to hear you got the attribution sorted. "studio of" is just an alias for "workshop of", the and/or ones I've always struggled with and don't really have a solution. Yes, formerly attributed is done my adding the painter with a deprecated rank. Multichill (talk) 20:34, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- By the way, when we get the numbers down a bit we should probably start looking again for paintings that use Information instead of Artwork (or Art Photo and for paintings that do use Artwork but don't have the object type set to painting. That will probably give a lot of new candidates. Multichill (talk) 22:30, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill, I think at some point I did look through Category:Artworks without Wikidata item for images with "oil on canvas" and few other medium and added object type set to painting. I think I also intersected it with categories for paintings, etc. I wonder if might be a good idea to begin using instance of (P31) to start tagging some big categories like books, paintings, woodcuts, etc. or maybe "scan of a book", "photo of a painting", etc. RThat way we can start marking some images that do not have correct infoboxes. --Jarekt (talk) 00:47, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Multichill: , Category:Paintings by completely indexed painters is filling up. I wonder if it would be useful to break it and Category:Paintings from completely indexed collections into per painter categories like Category:Paintings by X without Wikidata item and per collection categories like Category:Paintings from X without Wikidata item. --Jarekt (talk) 15:29, 18 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks! I would opt for just adding the object type in the wikitext to these and these. For now I'd rather stick to wikitext here until we run out of easy matches.
- I modified the touch bot to also do Category:Paintings by completely indexed painters and that gave some more paintings. I expect some of them to start showing up at User:Multichill/Same image without Wikidata/Wikidata creator and institution match, but that page is still quite large so not all suggestions get shown.
- Was considering the breaking out too depending how things go. For now I would just see how it evolves. As long as we have easy suggestions, the numbers will probably go down quickly. When we get stuck or the category just gets too big, we might consider breaking it up in smaller chunks. Multichill (talk) 17:57, 18 January 2021 (UTC)
- And even more paintings to update. I already added the missing object type to nearly 20.000 painting images. Multichill (talk) 17:52, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Use of JarektBot for stamps
I have now seen that your bot made this change. Could you explain me why? Now I am the artist of the paintings. However, the images are engravings and I took the photo of the stamps. The object "paintings" was added by BotMultichill. In my opinion is the Artwork template not the right one when it is so filled in. What is your opinion? Thanks, Wouter (talk) 15:48, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- Wouter, that was a mistake. The bot was doing one-time job of adding Artwork templates to files in Category:Paintings by Rembrandt and this one got caught into it. I will undo my change. --Jarekt (talk) 20:39, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- Can you look into the license of the file. The file is using PD-old claiming that author (Wouter Hagens) is dead for 70 years or more. I think you are trying to say that Kuno Brinks , S.L. Hartz and E. Reitsma-Valença are dead for more than 70 years, but that also does not seem to be right as some of them died recently. According to Commons:Stamps/Public_domain#Netherlands those stamps are in Public Domain, but they are using wrong license template. --Jarekt (talk) 20:54, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for your fast action. Indeed according to Commons:Stamps/Public_domain#Netherlands as of 2021 Dutch stamps created in the period 1852–1950 are considered to be Public Domain. There has been a discussion about the PD-old, which should be better replaced by another new to be created template special for the Dutch stamps prior to 1 January 1989. The word "author" may be confusing; I was the person who scanned the stamps. May be another word can be used. Wouter (talk) 21:17, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- Wouter, If there is no proper template for Dutch Stamps than maybe we should create one, otherwise it is quite confusing. Is the test something like :"This Dutch stamp is in the public domain in the Netherlands and European Union because it was published before January 1, 1950. " OK? Where "1950" should be current year - 70 until 1989. --Jarekt (talk) 22:24, 20 January 2 021 (UTC)
- Jarekt, I think that is a good idea, but I would leave out the limitation of Netherlands and European Union. Thus "This Dutch stamp is in the public domain because it was published before January 1, 19XX." Wouter (talk) 09:54, 21 January 2021 (UTC)

Revert
Hey Jarekt, what's going on with this revert: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons_talk:Structured_data&diff=528965461&oldid=528965008 accidental or did I miss something? How have you been doing? Were you active on Commons the whole time? --Dschwen (talk) 04:14, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- Dschwen, No idea how that happen. I did have some moment today when my browser felt sluggish and running few clicks behind, but I did not notice me reverting anything. I have been going at my usual pace for last decade or so. Mostly keeping few dozen Lua modules running and helping connecting images of artworks etc. to wikidata items, rewriting many of Infobox templates to allow easy movement of metadata stored in them to Wikidata, helping a bit with SDC, etc. How about you, what have you been up to? --Jarekt (talk) 04:30, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- I've been meaning to look into the Lua modules. I've just been pretty busy with work and other volunteer projects and other hobbies (like my old Commodore computers, and a Van we bought for camping), The summers here in Idaho are great for hiking and outdoors stuff. --Dschwen (talk) 06:43, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- Dschwen, I never had a Commodore as my first computer was ZX Spectrum. Camping vans can be a lot of fun. I have a friend who converted couple sprinter vans into great campers with tons of battery storage, massive solar panels, heating, cooling, kitchen, etc. He has one on east coast and one on the west coast and uses them a lot. I also did some family trips where we would fly somewhere and rent one. The trick is to find one with 5 seat-belts my family needs. I did a bit of climbing around Utah (Moab region was my favorite) but never travel much around Idaho. For a while I was thinking about visiting City of Rocks. As for Lua, it is provides a sane way of implementing templates, so I moved most of the high use Commons templates to Lua. Now great majority of Special:MostTranscludedPages are Lua codes and couple line templates to call them. No more un-mantainable code like original ISOdate. --Jarekt (talk) 14:29, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've been to City of Rocks last fall (see my uploads). It's really beautiful. We got a Ford E350 XLT for a pretty good price (from a van shuttle business that had to downsize due to the pandemic). See here, and here). Last year the conversion was pretty makeshift, but I'm adding a heater and secondary battery in the spring (it's currently too cold to work on it).--Dschwen (talk) 18:25, 29 January 2021 (UTC) P.S.: Five seat belts is precisely the same problem we were having! Commercial conversions with that configuration are extremely hard to find. --Dschwen (talk) 18:27, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Problems
- IPv6 addresses were written in lowercase letters in diffs. This caused dead links since Special:Contributions only accepted uppercase letters for the IPs. This has been fixed. [17]
Changes later this week
- You can soon use Wikidata to link to pages on the multilingual Wikisource. [18]
- Often editors use a "non-breaking space" to make a gap between two items when reading but still show them together. This can be used to avoid a line break. You will now be able to add new ones via the special character tool in the 2010, 2017, and visual editors. The character will be shown in the visual editor as a space with a grey background. [19][20]
- Wikis use abuse filters to stop bad edits being made. Filter maintainers can now use syntax like
1.2.3.4 - 1.2.3.55
as well as the1.2.3.4/27
syntax for IP ranges. [21] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).
Future changes
- Minerva is the skin Wikimedia wikis use for mobile traffic. When a page is protected and you can't edit it you can normally read the source wikicode. This doesn't work on Minerva on mobile devices. This is being fixed. Some text might overlap. This is because your community needs to update MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext to work on mobile. You can read more. [22][23]
- Cloud VPS and Toolforge will change the IP address they use to contact the wikis. The new IP address will be
185.15.56.1
. This will happen on February 8. You can read more.

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons!
Dear Jarekt
Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.
After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.
The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.
As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.
Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
Complex date
I'm trying to install Wikidata Infobox on the Kurdish (Kurmanji} Wikipedia as part of the WMF programme to build capacity in small wikis. They already have a fairly recent version of Module:WikidataIB, but not Module:Complex date. I want to try to encourage them to learn how to do imports themselves, but I'm missing an authoritative list of the dependencies for Module:Complex date, as I think you did some rationalisation since I last prepared a list. Would you be able to give a list of all of the dependencies that Module:Complex date requires, please? I can then try to walk them through the import for ku-wiki, ready to do a workshop. Thanks in advance, --RexxS (talk) 22:34, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
- User:RexxS I created Module:Complex_date/doc#Dependencies listing all the dependencies. I did managed to trim down that tree and switched to lazy loading for bunch of them but there is still a bunch of modules Module:Complex_date depends on. --Jarekt (talk) 13:15, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
- That's brilliant - thanks so much. If you don't mind, I'll include a copy of it in Module:WikidataIB/doc. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 14:47, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
- No problem at all. --Jarekt (talk) 02:52, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Wikipedia app for Android now has watchlists and talk pages in the app. [24]
Changes later this week
- You can see edits to chosen pages on Special:Watchlist. You can add pages to your watchlist on every wiki you like. The GlobalWatchlist extension will come to Meta on 11 February. There you can see entries on watched pages on different wikis on the same page. The new watchlist will be found on Special:GlobalWatchlist on Meta. You can choose which wikis to watch and other preferences on Special:GlobalWatchlistSettings on Meta. You can watch up to five wikis. [25]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 February. It will be on all wikis from 11 February (calendar).
Future changes
- When admins protect pages the form will use the OOUI look. Special:Import will also get the new look. This will make them easier to use on mobile phones. [26][27]
- Some services will not work for a short period of time from 07:00 UTC on 17 February. There might be problems with new short links, new translations, new notifications, adding new items to your reading lists or recording email bounces. This is because of database maintenance. [28]
- Last week Tech News reported that the IP address Cloud VPS and Toolforge use to contact the wikis will change on 8 February. This is delayed. It will happen later instead. [29]

Thank you
I wanted to say this for a long time - but the photo challenges you created and keep going are bringing a lot of joy to my life. On days like this one, where I feel slightly rattled by all the things that are not beautiful out in this world, I often look at the running challenge and the rich beauty of the contributions helps me find balance and energy again. And on those months you pick a theme I created, I feel a bit of pride as well, for having done my small part in bringing those pictures in. Especially this last year with all its restrictions and the limitations we had in going to wonderful places around the world, seeing some of the most beautiful places on the challenge pages helped me stay sane and carry on. Thank you! --Kritzolina (talk) 08:20, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
- Kritzolina, Thank you. Photo challenge is such a tiny part of my activity on Commons, and it often feels like one of those monthly chores, that regularly falls right when I am in the middle of something much more fun. However, I really enjoy seeing results of some of the challenges and what high quality images they bring. I also believe that it is an excellent way to drawn in some new users and am quite pleased when I see high participation from obviously new people especially if they seem to provide images from under-represented parts of the world. --Jarekt (talk) 02:51, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Jarekt, I am aware that you do so much more - although I surely am not aware of ALL that you do. And I truly am grateful for all those things - most of which I personally could not do. I hope you find joy or at least satisfaction in most of them! But yes, for many of the reasons you named, the photo challenge is one of the places I truly enjoy on commons. Thanks again for keeping it going, even if it feels burdensome at times! --Kritzolina (talk) 12:29, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
Category:Paintings from completely indexed collections some statistics
I wanted to get an idea of what is in this category. I ran some statistics at User:Multichill/Zandbak. The number just says something about the number of lines so it's a relative indicator. You can easily search per collection to see what pops up. We have about 6000 with institution and creator set. This set will probably grow smaller quickly, but the nearly 4000 without creator will require a lot more effort. Multichill (talk) 21:34, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill, I am still trying to finish Category:Paintings_by_completely_indexed_painters, but yes it would be nice to tackle Category:Paintings from completely indexed collections. I still thing that the number of item is a bit overwhelming and it might work better to split it into per collection sub categories. Also I would like to use some similar system for non-painting items, like Durer's woodcuts I recently organized. I wonder if I should set up different tab pages for those or rename Data:Completely indexed painters.tab to Data:Completely indexed artists.tab and add a column for artwork type (like "painting"). I prefer the second option. --Jarekt (talk) 02:53, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
- I'd just like to keep this system for now User:Multichill/Same image without Wikidata/Wikidata creator and institution match and d:Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Image suggestions/Creator, institution and inventory number match are going quite well. Please take a short survey regarding UCoC
Hello Jarekt,
I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.
As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.
You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.
Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
Your edit on that file reminded me that if Creator or Institution is used directly based on Wikidata like in this example:
Ickworth House | |||
---|---|---|---|
Parent institution | National Trust | ||
Location | |||
Coordinates | |||
Website | www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ickworth | ||
Authority file |
The pencil will just link to the pencil. Probably best to link it to the Wikidata item instead. Multichill (talk) 23:10, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

coordinates of depicted place (P9149)
Hi Jarekt, coordinates of depicted place (P9149) just got created. Can you update the relevant templates that currently support coordinate location (P625) to prefer coordinates of depicted place (P9149) (but still support the old one)? Is it possible to add a tracker too to see what still needs to be converted? I'll update my bots to start using the new property. Multichill (talk) 15:10, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill, I am still a bit blurry on how that property will be used:
- for example if the image is File:Thomas Hill Yosemite Valley 1900.jpg than I assume coordinates of depicted place (P9149) will be location of Yosemite valley, coordinate location (P625) will be of painting location and coordinates of the point of view (P1259) would be a spot where painter stood when painting?
- Than in case of File:Panoramic Overview from Glacier Point over Yosemite Valley 2013 Alternative.jpg, P1259 is for the photographer location and either P9149 or P625 could be used for the valley location .
- --Jarekt (talk) 21:35, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- coordinate location (P625) will just end up being mostly dropped here in SDC because it's unclear what it refers too.
- For example if we would add coordinates to File:De Moulin Rouge in Parijs bij avond, Bestanddeelnr 254-5695.jpg, we would use coordinates of the point of view (P1259) and coordinates of depicted place (P9149). If would add coordinate location (P625), what would it mean? What we see in the photo or should it contain the coordinates of Nationaal Archief (Q1857081)? To avoid this discussion, the new property was created. Multichill (talk) 23:20, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill I think I got it, now. So the Module:coordinates which pulls data from Wikiadata and SDC should treat P625 and 9149 as equivalent with 9149 taking precedent on SDC and P625 on Wikidata. Right? Or does the preference when pulling from Wikidata (if both present and conflicting) depends on item's type? --Jarekt (talk) 01:51, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
- No, that's (first line) correct. Multichill (talk) 18:47, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Anonymous WWII photos published on Facebook verus PD-Polish license
Hi Jarek, I hope you are well. Can you please have a look this? I told this editor on pl-Wiki that anonymous photos published on social media do not meet the PD-Polish criteria, but these uploads continue. Is it OK from legal point of view? Does it meet Commons requirements? Thank you! Boston9 (talk) 21:37, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
- Boston9, I am doing well. The images are from Archiwum Instytutu Pamięci Narodowej and I agree that they are missing proof that they were published in Poland before 89, and that is a a problem, as they do not meet requirements of the license. However many of them seem to be scanned from printed sources, so they are likely PD-Polish, we just do not have the proof. Many are also old enough to be PD-old or PD-anon-70-EU not to mentioned that many of the photographs from the collection of Polish Archives were being published a lot because they were most easily accessible back then. Even if I would not be uploading those or using them much as they are likely to be deleted at some point. I think that great many files in Category:PD Polish are much more obvious targets for deletions, starting with all the files which are not photographs. --Jarekt (talk) 04:28, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

Template parameter
Hi, Jarekt. I found some redundant parameters on Trademarked like "1={}|2={}|3={}", but my edit requeset was turned down. Am I wrong? Have a nice weekend.--Larryasou (talk) 03:52, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
title from wd does not show in the header
Hi Jarekt, with File:Nachtelijk gevecht tussen Cornelis Tromp op de 'Gouden Leeuw' en Sir Edward Spragg op de 'Royal Prince' tijdens de zeeslag bij Kijkduin, 21 augustus 1673; episode uit de Derde Engelse Rijksmuseum SK-A-2393.jpeg and other 3 versions the title from wd cannot be seen in the headline. Can you see the problem?, Thank you, and thank you very much for the new quick statements tool, getting information from commons to wd, works terrific and I like the color line--Oursana (talk) 22:56, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
- Oursana I think the issue is supper long title. I do have 250 character limit on the title length. This one is shorter but when I added shorter polish label the page shows up just fine in Polish. As for QS, I am doing a lot of playing with some new capabilities, see Category:Paintings_without_Wikidata_item (and other folders) and try the new icons in the title bar. I am not sure what is "color line". --Jarekt (talk) 02:05, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, I will try and have a look. For the tool I like the bar/line changing the color by fulfillment --Oursana (talk) 02:10, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

Template
Hi Jarekt,
I'm a graphic worker and now I would like to create a template to inform that a media is working for many people with color vision deficiency. I have a hard time to find information on "How to" create a template and it's different parts with translation, adding category etc. I'm planning on creating a version of Colour blind
and I have created the icon I will use. Could you direct me to where I can find such info? It would be very helpful, thanks. Please ping me. --Goran tek-en (talk) 14:46, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
- Goran tek-en, the easiest approach I found is to look for the most similar template that works and have all the elements you need. Than write your template mimicking most of the code of the source template. I would start with 1 or 2 languages, get it to work, and then expand to other languages if you know more than that. --Jarekt (talk) 19:02, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
Maybe you know
Hi Jarek, I assume that it could be possible to get an input value e.g. with the appropriate span
statements ?
I would like to use it in a template documentation to show the different output depending on different parameters.
But I cannot find any description nor an example. Do you know about an example where I may look how to do? -- sarang♥사랑 15:05, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
- sarang, I am sorry but I do not understand the question. Can you try to explain it again? Or also add German version which I can run through Google Translate.--Jarekt (talk) 19:26, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
- I do not know how, but I believe that may be somehow it is possible to define an input field and to get a typed value from there to continue the work with it. CSS has parameters for that but I miss an example how to perform it - either directly or by using a tool. I cannot find any useful documentation about so I got the idea to ask you. -- sarang♥사랑 09:03, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
- Do you mean like passing some info from one one template to another through some invisible tags? I do it all the time for example If you look at HTML source of File:MordauntbMartinPolier.jpg you can see invisible tags like
"<div style="display: none;">creator QS:P170,Q702272</div>"
created by Creator and used by Artwork to identify the author. Many other templates do the same. I am planning to switch from<div>
based tags tospan
based tags. Perhaps"<span style="display: none;" class="QS">creator:P170,Q702272</span>"
. --Jarekt (talk) 14:57, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

Tweak parsing of fields of Category:Paintings by completely indexed painters
Hi Jarek, I noticed File:Judith Leyster - Cello player.jpg didn't show up in Category:Paintings by completely indexed painters. It probably has to do with the extra "and workshop" field. Maybe just ignore that part? Multichill (talk) 16:04, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill, I will check the code, on how the decision is made. BTW there seem to be a deafening silence after my invite on polish Wikipedia on painting wikiproject or my email to people I know at polish wikipedia chapter. I had an idea about your image matching code for adding wikidata items:
- I have quarry:query/52422 query for intersecting Category:Individual_painting_categories (sub-categories associated with a single artwork) and Category:Paintings_without_Wikidata_item.
- I save the results as a html table, and visit individual categories to look for images without digital representation of (P6243).
- I use customized version of User:Magnus Manske/sdc tool.js to quickly add P6243
- That approach works well on categories with a lot of images without P6243. but for the ones with only a few files it is inefficient. Maybe we could rig your process used on pages like this one to match files in Category:Paintings by completely indexed painters subcategories with images associated with the items with a sitelink to those subcategories. --Jarekt (talk) 23:19, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
- Did you have a look at User:Multichill/Same image without Wikidata/Category match? I think that is quite similar to the approach you describe, but it works on all paintings, not only from completed collections.
- By the way, I created Commons:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Paintings not in completed tracker category to have an overview of files that are currently not picked up. It's not too bad. Multichill (talk) 23:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
- That is similar idea, and my approach do not work completed collections, but based on Category:Individual_painting_categories which is added by Wikidata Infobox to categories linked to items which are instance of painting. With File:Judith Leyster - Cello player.jpg the extra "and workshop" was the deal breaker: I can handle most of the modifiers except for 5 and this is one of them. I will check on other files in Commons:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Paintings not in completed tracker category. 20 files in that list are false negatives as they do show up in the correct category. --Jarekt (talk) 01:23, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- The old query was horrible and breaking down, see User_talk:Multichill#Same_image_without_Wikidata/Category_match. Updated to use Category:Individual painting categories and now it's much faster and better results at User:Multichill/Same image without Wikidata/Category match. Multichill (talk) 18:08, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
- Category:Individual painting categories is quite useful, but I'm under the impression quite a few paintings are missing. Looking at queries like https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=18452060 , it shouldn't be too hard to find a lot of the missing painting categories. Did you ever try anything (semi-)automatic? Take for example https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=18452101 . This is everything for the Netherlands and it's less than a thousand categories. Some simple filtering to drop anything that contains "paintings" and the length of the to do list quite short. Multichill (talk) 20:53, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill, Category:Individual painting categories is added by Wikidata Infobox (see here) to categories with instance of (P31) = painting (Q3305213). It took a long time to fill, and it is possible not all categories were refreshed since it was added. Also I do not know how items with multiple P31 are handled, so it might be missing stuff that way too. I am also finding many categories for a single paintings not connected to the painting item through a sitelink, or connected through category item (rare). Also some categories might not have Wikidata Infobox, but I think there is a bot that adds them to categories used as sitelinks (?). So there is many reasons why some of the categories can be missing. --Jarekt (talk) 22:23, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
- The code is
{{#if:{{#invoke:WikidataIB|checkvalue|val=Q3305213|P31|qid={}}}|}}
. WikidataIB.checkvalue might be able to handle multiple P31s and category items, We could check with Rex or experiment with that line of code. --Jarekt (talk) 22:29, 15 February 2021 (UTC)- By the way, https://multichill.toolforge.org/queries2/commons/paintings_without_wikidata_in_painting_category.txt contains the list of suggestions. If you scroll through it you see a bunch of big blocks. You might be able to process those with a semi-automated tool. Multichill (talk) 19:56, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Multichill, Any chance you can split Commons:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Paintings not in completed tracker category into per author and per collection lists? It looks like each file has some different issue. With per collection files the issue often is that Institution template is in the wrong field. Another common issue is multiple institutions or artists per field. I do not have code to deal with those. I can fix bunch of those issues in the files, but it is easier if I know which issue I am fixing. --Jarekt (talk) 05:21, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- It's first the institutions and after that the creators and I sorted it now by the name of the institution/creator template. Multichill (talk) 10:01, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- I was emptying out the list and I noticed the template only seems to add one of the tracker categories and not both
- File:Frans Hals - Tieleman Roosterman - WGA11123.jpg has Category:Paintings by completely indexed painters, but other one is missing (if you remove the artist, it appears)
- File:The White Orchard - My Dream.jpg same, was the other way around but changed after null edit

Sorry, it's me again. Please could you kindly sort out the above image filepage by removing the second and third uploads? The first upload is fine.
Reason: the system was misrepresenting my uploads, then I tried to correct it by uploading again, but the wrong thing was being uploaded. Oddly, the system corrected itself after some minutes, but I ended up with too many uploads. The broadband is very slow here in my village - maybe that is the fault. I hope to resolve it by not attempting to add further uploads to image filepages. Cheers. Storye book (talk) 10:45, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- Storye book I deleted one of them, but I am not sure how to delete first or last version as the interface is confusing. I could experiment with it, but are likely to just create more sub-versions. The deletion of individual versions of the file is meant for removing versions that have some issue like copyright or privacy issues. However it does not save any space as the file is kept and only made not visible. Those sub versions do not have any issue, so I do not think anything is gained by their deletion. --Jarekt (talk) 18:34, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, that is fine now. The remaining one is only a duplicate and does no harm. Thank you for sorting this. Storye book (talk) 21:10, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
Book template tweaking, if possible, please :)
Hi Jarekt,
I'm now in the process of converting "Information" to "Book" template on all fr-wikisource books, and linking to wikidata \o/ (very long process, indeed).
I noticed on this book, that only 1 publisher and 1 publishing place are retrieved from wikidata, while it is a jointed publication between d:Q105753018 (Paris) and d:Q105752977 (Bruxelles). Could you please modify the template so that when a book is co-published, all publishers appear on it ? that would be very nice of you
Another question, about License... a lot of books on wikidata now have information about copyright - do you think it would be feasible to retrieve them from wd linked items for books, each time the info is added there ? it is quite tedious to maintain info on both projects :)
Thanks a lot ! --Hsarrazin (talk) 08:13, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hsarrazin, great to hear about linking of books to wikidata. I was doing a lot of linking paintings and other artworks to Wikidata, and there is a lot to do there. By the way, adding digital representation of (P6243) to the file SDC is equivalent to adding "Wikidata" field. I cloned and altered User:Jarekt/sdc tool.js to make adding P6243 easier. I will look into publisher and publishing place. That should be easy. Dealing with licenses would be more tricky. I will think about it. --Jarekt (talk) 20:21, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hsarrazin Done with publisher and publishing place. --Jarekt (talk) 15:04, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- thanks !
- about digital representation of (P6243) - I add the wikidata QID to the Book template -> could the P6243 be automatically completed by a bot from it ? - the most important part of the job, for me, is creating the item on wikidata for each book edition... - ah, ok. I prefer to add to the template instead, because I take advantage of it to cleanup the fields retrieved from wikidata, to display the right links instead of pure text values or simple wp links - this way, the display of informations is clean :)
- for example, see the difference between https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Audouard_-_Silhouettes_parisiennes.djvu&oldid=539662897 (after inserting p6243 (manually, because your tool is for categories - neat for cats containing several pics of a painting, but not for a single book) and https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Audouard_-_Silhouettes_parisiennes.djvu&direction=next&oldid=539662897 (the cleanup I do when inserting - links to creator box - --Hsarrazin (talk) 16:16, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

That way I can use it more quickly. --Jarekt (talk) 17:08, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- that's totally ok for me - I will keep adding QIDs to the Book template, since, generally, I work directly from the file, linking first to wikisource, to check whether an item already exists on wikidata - I have a ws2wd script that allowes me to retrieve data from the wikisource text - that's quicker, and allowes coherence between the 3 projects --Hsarrazin (talk) 17:17, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

Another tweaking on Book template, if it's possible - P1680 should be retrieved to fill the |subtitle parameter - You can see it is not on File:Aubert_-_Dictionnaire_de_la_noblesse,_1863,_volume_1.djvu (the subtitle being quite long on this one) --Hsarrazin (talk) 17:38, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hsarrazin Another thing that Multichill suggested that you also might find useful, are the , , icons. The intention was to to help with the search (first 2 icons) and allow quick creation of a new wikidata item based on File metadata. We tested and used those in context of the paintings. If you find them useful, but think they can be improved, I can do book specific tweaks. Right now the searches are based on wikidata IDs extracted from the template and matched to artist/author, instance of (P31) and collection (P195). If there are other fields I can pick wikidata ID from to add to the searches I can. Also can you test wikidata item adding ( ) to see if it works for you. If there is more info in the template that can be added to the new items I can try to add it. --Jarekt (talk) 18:17, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- thanks, I've already tested those buttons, and created items with them. I'll let you know which info would be very useful for books :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 18:22, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- well, for books, collection (P195) is no use : generally, we have an item for an edition... - author, title, date of publication are useful, but the SPARQL (2e button) on books imported by Fæ are no use at all - for ex : on File:John Adams Library (IA dictionnairemili001aube).pdf, the SPARQL query is only looking for "editions" https://w.wiki/y7j - which is a little vague - librarians call that noise
- the search in wikidata is much too precise on the contrary... https://w.wiki/34Ct - it looks for items that have the (complete) title + the author + owners (or former owners - which is useless for books) + access number... - there is no result (which is silence, even if the item already exists - author, or author + title would be quite enough
- as a matter of fact, I simply reduced the criteria in the wikidata search to find what I wanted... - but clearly, on poorly described files (like those books mass-imported from IA), they are totally useless.
- I will make test to give you more details on which criteria are useful for books, and which are useless...
- Thanks --Hsarrazin (talk) 21:46, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hsarrazin I have similar experience with paintings, For some paintings with Creator and Institution The precise search with those 2 constraints often gave me a single correct hit. But when the file has no metadata, or info is badly formated than there is noting to search for. In cirrus search I add title and accession number, which often come with noise which has to be cleaned by hand before hitting search. But is you find some search terms that often work, I can try to prepopulate them. Author ID and title sounds promising, but title is often noisy. Maybe Author ID + year of publication if there is a way to add date to haswbstatement. --Jarekt (talk) 04:13, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
- thanks, I've already tested those buttons, and created items with them. I'll let you know which info would be very useful for books :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 18:22, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
Also, there seems to be a problem with authorities, specifically OCLC :
- if OCLC parameter is given in the template, other authorities, on the wd item are not displayed... (see here)
- but, if I remove OCLC from the template and add it to the item, it is not displayed with other authorities (see there) - that's quite strange... --Hsarrazin (talk) 22:50, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
- The problem is that Template:Book authority control was not touched for a decade and can not pull anything from wikidata, but adding OCLC calls Template:Book authority control. Empty authorities field triggers attempt to call Module:Authority Control which is mostly designed for people not books and does not add OCLC, ISBN, etc. --Jarekt (talk) 04:29, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
- sooo, what should I do ? should I transfer OCLC to wikidata, and wait for a future tweak that will retrieve it ? because my library IDS are definitely BNF/Sudoc (French libraries, national and universities database), and OCLC does not bring anything useful to me... I need those IDs displayed on the file
- would it be possible to add a BNF ID in the Book template ? I don't know what would be the cleaner solution and still useful, for me and others...--Hsarrazin (talk) 07:16, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hsarrazin, strangely "bnf" is one of the forgotten arguments supported by the Book template. It was added almost a decade ago but not documented. I also added OCLC and ISBN to Module:Authority Control, so they should show up in the Book template is they are at wikidata and removed from wikitext. I should figure out how to make files with OCLC, ISBN and BNF parameters not to interfere with data pulled from Wikidata. --Jarekt (talk) 21:09, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
You asked me what would be interesting values to create when adding a wikidata item from a Book template. Those would be (if values are given as parameters) :
- Authors (from Creator template, or wp/ws links) -> P50
- translator -> P655 (same source)
- illustrator -> P110 (same source)
- Title -> P1476 (using indicated language)
- Subtitle -> P1680
- Date -> P577
- language -> P407 (according to codes)
- BNF when exists -> P268
- source : Gallica used as source P4258 ; IA -> P724 ; GBS -> P675
but also, add the item number to |wikidata paremeter on the commons file + P6243 -> this would avoid to forget them... (this should be easy, since it's the file from which the creation is done).
Do you think it would be possible ? That would be great :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 20:56, 12 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hsarrazin, I did not check resently, but I think Author, translator, illustrator, Title, and Date should be working now. The people need Creator templates and title needs {Title or language (like Fr). Date needs YYYY date or Other date. If you are working on some category of files, it might be good to add those before creating Wikidaa items. --Jarekt (talk) 23:03, 12 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt. Apologies, I have another question. The above is my first attempt at uploading a logo to Commons, using w:Wikipedia:logos buidelines. But as it's my first go, please could you kindly check that it's OK? I'm particularly concerned that I have not been able to trace any logo registration details for this one. Thank you. Storye book (talk) 09:42, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
- Storye book, I do not know much about logos but this one looks good to me. 99% of files deleted on Commons fail due to copyrights but in this case copyrights the copyright is easy. Everything else is more of "nice to have" category. --Jarekt (talk) 12:57, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
- Yay! Thank you very much for that. One thing less to worry about, eh. Cheers. Storye book (talk) 15:19, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Wikis that are part of the desktop improvements project can now use a new search function. The desktop improvements and the new search will come to more wikis later. You can also test it early.
- Editors who put up banners or change site-wide JavaScript code should use the client error graph to see that their changes has not caused problems. You can read more. [45]
Problems
- Due to database issues the Wikimedia Beta Cluster was read-only for over a day.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 March. It will be on all wikis from 18 March (calendar).
Future changes
- You can add a newline or carriage return character to a custom signature if you use a template. There is a proposal to not allow them in the future. This is because they can cause formatting problems. [46][47]
- You will be able to read but not edit 12 wikis for a short period of time on 23 March at 06:00 (UTC). This could take 30 minutes but will probably be much faster.
- You can use Quarry for SQL queries to the Wiki Replicas. Cross-database
JOINS
will no longer work from 23 March. There will be a new field to specify the database to connect to. If you think this affects you and you need help you can post on Phabricator or on Wikitech. PAWS and other ways to do SQL queries to the Wiki Replicas will be affected later. [48]

The Yorck Project / 10.000 Meisterwerke der Malerei
Hi Jarek, the first big collection of painting images being contributed to Commons was the Yorck Project. Wouldn't it be nice to have all these paintings integrated into Wikidata? I created Category:Yorck Project paintings missing SDC digital representation of (still filling up) to track what files do not link to Wikidata yet. On Wikidata I created 10.000 Meisterwerke der Malerei (Q105809087) to be used in described by source (P1343) (see for example on The Kiss (Q1195035)). I updated the template to add Category:Yorck Project paintings missing described by source. I wonder if we should add Commons media contributed by (P9126) and source of file (P7482) too (no targets available yet), but we can worry about that later. Feel like helping with this?
- Most files already use Artwork. I wouldn't focus on the leftovers now
- We have some files which do link to Wikidata, but don't have digital representation of (P6243) yet. Do you have an easy way to mass add these?
- We have to tag some paintings. This will make them show up in other reports.
- We have to link up paintings (subset of the tracking category) either to existing items or by creating new ones. This is by far the most work.
I wonder if we should mass create the missing paintings at some point. Merging is easy and cheap. Multichill (talk) 13:40, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill I am still working on Module:Information update, so I will be in the Lua land for a bit more. I can still help a bit. I will add P6243 to all the paintings in Category:Paintings_with_structured_data_missing_P6243_property. I also created Category:Yorck Project files missing P6243 property. I am a big fan of YorckProject, but their metadata is often in a very poor shape, as originally those files did not use almost any templates other than De. Unless files were cleaned up since they might not have properly formatted metadata for item creation. About create and than merge approach: due to lack of any infrastructure on Commons to update redirected items (see phabricator:T237899), merges and redirects are big headache for me, as I am trying to maintain Category:Artworks_with_redirected_Wikidata_link, Category:Artworks with structured data with redirected P6243 property and Category:Artworks with mismatching structured data P6243 property. However "create and than merge" approach might save a lot of time and be worth the pain. As for Commons artwork collections, I would be much more exited about tackling Web Gallery of Art collection as those are mostly my uploads with clean (relatively) metadata, but maybe we should tackle them afterwards. --Jarekt (talk) 16:04, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- I don't like these categories with a P number in the name. Reminds me of an awful programming practice of not properly naming your variables. Maybe you can indulge me and not name them like that anymore? Please? :-)
- Yeah, the metadata is a bit messy, but still about half of them seems to be linked already.
- Regarding the redirects. I just made this query to find them. Does that help?
- Maybe you can setup the same infrastructure for WGA in case we feel like also working on that one? Multichill (talk) 17:39, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill
- I agree with your dislike of categories with P-numbers and originally I was trying to avoid them. Unfortunately with out P-numbers the category names ended up being much longer to the point of being quite hard to read. So I thought I was choosing the lesser-evil by using P-numbers to cut down on length and than try to add good humanly readable descriptions within the category. However I do not have strong convictions about which naming approach is the best, so if you propose some alternative names we can use them instead.
- I like your query, and will have to play with it a bit. I especially like that it does not time out, as most queries I come up with do. I use this query a lot, but my main problem is some kind of pipeline for dealing with redirected items in "wikidata" fields of Artwork template. I would love to have a process for fixing all redirected items used on Commons, both in SDC and in Wikitext. Once redirects are cleaned up than Category:Artworks with mismatching structured data P6243 property is easier to figure out.
- --Jarekt (talk) 18:56, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- In adding the missing object type now to the files in Category:WGA form: painting and Category:PD-Art (Yorck Project) that don't link to Wikidata yet. At least that way all these files are on the radar. Multichill (talk) 17:21, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
- Both Yorck and WGA are nearly empty now. Do you know if we have more sets like these? Multichill (talk) 20:29, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

New user needs help with deleted image
Hi again. This request is on behalf of Alex1975uk, who is a comparatively new user. He uploaded File:Kenwood Mixer A700 - 1950.jpg - his own work - but it was deleted because (as I understand it) as a first-time uploader he made errors with authorship and/or licence. Please could you kindly undelete it for him and leave a message on his talk page? I check my watchlist daily, so I should be able to assist him to correct the errors promptly, if you haven't done that already. Thanks. Storye book (talk) 13:39, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Alex1975uk and Storye book: I did not talk to User:Christian Ferrer, who deleted the file about exactly why it was deleted but he stated Commons:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#F1 as the reason. Looking at the file I see no issues with "authorship and/or licence" in the file description, however the photograph itself has all the characteristics of something copied from the web: small size and lack of EXIF data. You can actually find that photo at [49]. So for Alex1975uk the best course would be to take a new photograph and upload the raw unprocessed file or find the original file he took in the first place. --Jarekt (talk) 14:04, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, that makes sense. That Pinterest picture belongs to Kenwood Chef Restore, which is the company run by Alex1975uk. He took the picture himself and used it for the company. So if I understand correctly, he can now upload his own original picture file again without need for undeleting? I guess he'll just need to state on the image page that he owns copyright to the picture which he took for his own company? Please let me know if that is not OK. Storye book (talk) 14:16, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- Update: I have let him know here. Sorry I gave the wrong link for my discussion with him, before. Storye book (talk) 14:25, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Storye book: Yes if he uploads the original photo at original resolution, as it comes out of the camera (maybe with minor crop or color adjustment), than it should be fine. What he uploaded was a photo from the web (presumably his) and we see a LOT of new users uploading photos they find on the web. --Jarekt (talk) 14:32, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

How to trigger create QS link?
If I want to create a new item for File:Guercino, The Samian Sibyl, 1651.jpg, how do I trigger the create link? It's not documented at Artwork. Multichill (talk) 13:42, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill, This file is from "complete" collection or artist, and we prevent item creation for those. When I run into those, I do a preview after temporarily removing institution or "painting" object type. than you see the + icon. Than afterwards after I add item ID the the file, I can do a second round of QS adding. it is not very convenient, but it gets the job done.
- By the way, I come up with a pipeline to create couple hundred new items quickly, based on Category:Paintings by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz in the Museum of the Middle Pomerania in Słupsk data set. They were all uploded by User:Ankry 8 years ago from the same source, and it was easy to clean up the Artwork metadata to use proper templates. Than this query allowed me to scrape ~200 QS command sequences for creating new items for them. A little clean-up of the query output in Notepad++ and I was able to quickly create a bunch of new items for those paintings. You might have a better ways of accomplishing the same but it opens another way to get it done, once you verified that the metadata in the files is clean. --Jarekt (talk) 19:43, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
- That works good. Exactly what I was looking for!
- That's a really smart approach. You might want to consider setting these to instance of pastel instead of painting. Multichill (talk) 22:46, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
- I am doing a lot of cleanup on those: inventory ID, URL, English labels and descriptions. I will also add proper Instance of. --Jarekt (talk) 00:13, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- There is a Wikipedia app for KaiOS phones. They don't have a touch screen so readers navigate with the phone keys. There is now a simulator so you can see what it looks like.
- The reply tool and new discussion tool are now available as the "Discussion tools" beta feature in almost all wikis except German Wikipedia.
Problems
- You will be able to read but not edit twelve wikis for a short period of time on 23 March at 06:00 (UTC). This can also affect password changes, logging in to new wikis, global renames and changing or confirming emails. This could take 30 minutes but will probably be much faster.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 March. It will be on all wikis from 25 March (calendar).
- Syntax highlighting colours will change to be easier to read. This will soon come to the first wikis. [50]
Future changes
- Flagged revisions will no longer have multiple tags like "tone" or "depth". It will also only have one tier. This was changed because very few wikis used these features and they make the tool difficult to maintain. [51][52]
- Gadgets and user scripts can access variables about the current page in JavaScript. In 2015 this was moved from
wg*
tomw.config
.wg*
will soon no longer work. [53]

Recent changes
- Some very old web browsers don’t work well with the Wikimedia wikis. Some old code for browsers that used to be supported is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. [54]
- IRC recent changes feeds have been moved to a new server. Make sure all tools automatically reconnect to
irc.wikimedia.org
and not to the name of any specific server. Users should also consider switching to the more modern EventStreams. [55]
Problems
- When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split. It might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. [56]
- Some translatable pages on Meta could not be edited. This was because of a bug in the translation tool. The new MediaWiki version was delayed because of problems like this. [57][58]

I am clearly not up to date and I am missing something. I just completed the transcription File:(Commercial character) The Joseph Fisher lecture in commerce, delivered at the University of Adelaide (IA commercialcharac00jessrich).pdf at WS, created the WD edition item, then added the WD link, and see that it enters this category. What am I meant to be entering against digital representation of (P6243) at WD to comply. We could do with some better explanatory text for what a fix constitutes. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:36, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- It seems to be somewhat duplicating "edition of", and I will admit to be totally slack and not creating the WORK item for the edition. That just becomes so bothersome for next to no value. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:42, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- billinghurst, this category was mean mostly for bots to come and copy q-id to digital representation of (P6243). However since that property was created it is something else to a lot of different people and some of the uses of P6243 become controversial ( use for 2D artworks is OK, but for sculptures or books is unclear) . I proposed d:Wikidata:Property proposal/Infobox based on to be used instead, with Artwork/Book templates but that is currently in limbo. So I would not worry about that category for time being as eventually there should be consensus which property to use and bots will began adding them. --Jarekt (talk) 04:00, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt. Please would you kindly check the above image licence for me? According to the European Research Council it is a free image, but then they go and add a lot of ifs and buts. It looks to me as if those ifs and buts would apply to any free licence, but as I'm not familiar with flag copyright issues, I'd be grateful for a check. If there is a problem with it, I'll move it to en.wikipedia under a non-free licence. Thanks. Storye book (talk) 17:16, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

To get out of the infobox deadlock
We seem to be in a bit of a deadlock when it comes to taking out the Wikidata field from Artwork (and friends) and putting it in structured data. This scale might work:
- digital representation of (P6243) only for 2D works (paintings, drawings, etches, etc.).
- digital representation of (P6243) qualified with shown with features (P1354) -> picture frame (Q860792). This way these images are visible in the wide interpretation of PD-art and can be filtered out in the strict interpretation. We can even show a nice alert in the template here if the frame is included
- main subject (P921) qualified with object of statement has role (P3831) -> "primary focus of photograph" for photographs with anything else where we want to show an infobox
Yes, this doesn't cover all cases (details, coats of arms, probably more), but at least we can start cleaning up the data and solving the problem. I would first focus on cleaning up the paintings, but I think in the longer run it can be expanded to other domains (think of all those Wiki Loves Monuments photos where we can show some information about the building). What do you think? Multichill (talk) 11:35, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill, Yes, "Infobox based on" proposal does not seem to be moving, and we need clarity on modeling. Half a year ago, I was not able to give someone clear recommendation if it is a good idea to add digital representation of (P6243) to large number of books and than build some tools around it. I am concerned that Artwork's "Wikidata" field is simple and everybody can grasp it. digital representation of (P6243) was supposed to be also simple as 1:1 replacement, so was "Infobox based on" propery. Once we move into qualifiers than, it becomes harder: javascript tools for adding properties do not work, and manual addition takes time. I am quite quick with QuickStatements, but it is easy to make mass mistakes with it, which are hard to undo, so I do not like qualifiers as much. I am totally onboard with 2D artworks and the frame solution and I assume that for time being we will not do anything special for painting details. I would like to find a single solution for all the other cases: sculptures, monuments, books, coats of arms, movies, 3D cad models, etc. and main subject (P921) qualified with object of statement has role (P3831) seems to be the best option, since in all those cases the wikidata item is the main subject of the file. Too bad P921 does not have uniqueness constraint. The new item to be used with object of statement has role (P3831) should work for all (photographs, movies, recordings, 3D models, etc.) and should be only for Artwork templates, maybe the text should be "Link Infobox to Wikidata", "source of Infobox metadata", etc. --Jarekt (talk) 13:34, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
- Ok. Let's focus on the painting part first. That's a big chunk we can solve. Can you update the artwork template to add Category:Paintings with Wikidata item (just like Category:Paintings without Wikidata item)? That makes it easier to work on this. As for details I was thinking about something like digital representation of (P6243) qualified with subject has role (P2868) -> detail (Q1201081). Multichill (talk) 14:14, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
- Nevermind, I managed to complete miss Category:Paintings with structured data missing P6243 property. I'll look into emptying that one out. Multichill (talk) 21:21, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Template:Namespace
Hello Jarekt, hope you are doing well. We noticed that translations of Template:Namespace not working, for example see Template:BadJPEG/ar, you'll notice that (template) word still appear on English. Can you fix it? Thanks on advance --Alaa :)..! 19:53, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
- @علاء: Template:BadJPEG does not use Template:Namespace, it is calling MediaWiki Magic word NAMESPACE instead. NAMESPACE is not meant to show translated page only identify namespace to a template. It is a bit more readable then
NAMESPACENUMBER
which returns a number. It is a mistake to use NAMESPACE for display, as that shortcut only works in English. I tried to edit Template:BadJPEG/ar but I am afraid to break it as somehow I can not convince my editor to work correctly in right-to-left mode. Please see Template:BadJPEG/pl for how to rewrite Template:BadJPEG/ar so it does not use NAMESPACE for display. If anything is not clear there I can help. Will you be able to handle it? --Jarekt (talk) 21:25, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

Canvas change
Hi Jarekt, per this discussion canvas (Q4259259) is going to be replaced with canvas (Q12321255) for paintings. Do we need to update any templates here? Multichill (talk) 10:07, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
- I do not think so. In the code Module:Artwork/Technique_LUT both items translate to term "canvas" and in Template:Technique/WikidataLUT term "canvas" translates to canvas (Q12321255). So we should be OK. I was always assuming canvas (Q12321255) is the one for paintings, but sometimes people incorrectly picked canvas (Q4259259). --Jarekt (talk) 12:19, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
- This was never really sorted out before so for example my bots used canvas (Q4259259). I'm also tackling panel now, see the next topic. Multichill (talk) 14:31, 15 May 2021 (UTC)

Missing materials
Hi Jarekt, on sometimes items on Wikidata only have the surface and missing paint or have paint, but missing surface. I wonder if we can fill some of these holes based on Oil on canvas and Oil on panel. You could do something with the fact that the lenght of made from material (P186) is only one. So instead of showing the QuickStatements when the length is 0, show it when the length is < 2. What do you think? Multichill (talk) 14:53, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Q4233718
and author="unknown value" asauthor
. To me both of those renderings seem equivalent, and I rather keep it as is, but if you think I should change something that would be easy. --Jarekt (talk) 19:34, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

Deletion of the post
Hi Jarket,
In your revision "(insect photos which are outside of the scope of this challenge)" of May 2021 photo challenges, you have deleted one of my submission: "Ants communicating over coffee plant.jpg"
But as far as my understanding based on the few of the web resources, ants belong to Arthropoda. Or am I missing something? can you please clarify?? Thanks in advance.
- Ashwin Geet Dsa, when the challenge was proposed we had one for insects and one for "Arthropods other than insects: spiders, crabs, scorpions, millipedes, etc. ". Unfortunately, many of the entries were of insects, which is why I removed all the entries that did not meet last month challenge. Sorry about it. --Jarekt (talk) 10:05, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- Jarekt, thanks for the clarification.
Hi Jarekt, I hope this finds you well. First a thank-you for your help with the logos. I think I'm OK with that now. But I'm not entirely sure of the copyright grey areas, when photographing 3D commercial items.
The above is a toffee tin, with an embossed decoration which is in direct imitation of a design which was originally created before our current cutoff date of 1926 (See the original 19th-century toffee tin design here: File:Farrahs Harrogate toffee (2).JPG). The other positive aspects (hooray) are that it's a 3D object, John Farrah's (d.1907) trademark signature was created in 1887, the large letters and the trademark are embossed (3D), and the embossed letters are standard fonts and not in themselves artworks. The cons (boo) are that the manufacture of the tin can be dated to about 1970, and that the design includes the word "copyright" in its border, although that word was not in the original design.
If we have to delete the above image of the 1970 tin, then I can re-photograph it to show only partial views of the tin. However, if you think that the photo is safe, I shall upload my other three photos of the same tin (they show no more decoration detail). I am in possession of both tins. Storye book (talk) 14:25, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Storye book: , That is a bit of a gray area. It likely falls under Commons:Copyright_rules_by_subject_matter#Utility_objects but I am not sure. All the other files in Category:Toffee tins would have the same issue. I usually go to Commons:Village pump/Copyright with such issues. --Jarekt (talk) 20:38, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you. I'll do that. Storye book (talk) 09:13, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt, I've replied regarding the browser issue I've been having.--ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 11:04, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Jarekt: can I ask when you'll be able to look at this? ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 22:07, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
- Jarekt, can you please change
Res.str = string.format('<table><tr><td>%s</td><td style="align=top;">%s</td></tr></table>',
back toRes.str = string.format('<div style="float:left;">%s</div>%s',
? I think this new formatting is the source of the problem. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 06:36, 12 June 2021 (UTC) - @Multichill: since Jarek appears to be on a break at the moment, would you maybe look at undoing this particular problematic change, please? Thanks, ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 18:02, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
- ᴀlbanɢeller the "<div>" solution had a lot of other very annoying issues because of the "float" part, for many files the creator templates were piling up on top of each other. The "<table>" solution was the only way I figured out of how to fix all of them. By the way, I usually place test cases for the creator testing at Module_talk:Wikidata_art/sandbox/testcases#Creator_Test and I added your case here. However in all the browsers I have it looks fine. If you see the issue could you take a screen shot of it so I can see exactly what you mean? --Jarekt (talk) 21:18, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
- Having studied the code a bit more, I think this issue is essentially part of a larger one with the Creator and Institution templates. Basically, whenever I expand them on my narrow screen, the width of the entire Artwork template expands to accommodate it, which can be very annoying. Perhaps the code should be adjusted in the modules for both templates, to stop this from happening? ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 23:14, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
- The issue was that multiple Creator templates arranged using "float:left" option would sometimes arrange themselves in a single row instead of multiple rows and it looked very strange. That happened even when they were not placed inside "Artwork" template, for example in test page. We were testing various alternatives for a while and the "table" markup seems like the best solution. --Jarekt (talk) 10:59, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
- Would it not be possible to modify the code to prevent the Creator/Institution templates from stretching Template:Artwork whenever they are expanded? I've checked both on my 1024x768 browser (with this file) and whenever I expand one of them it pushes the image further to the right, in order to fit the template. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 01:03, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
- We write HTML code and browsers arrange the page so it looks right. We do not have many ways of controlling the browsers to micromanage them. Creator/Institution templates have to stretch artwork template when expanded. Otherwise they would not fit. They were doing that for about a decade. Recently I had some changes to Creator template to add "edit at wikidata" icon, but there were no such changes done to Institution template. If there is some case that does not work, please take a screenshot and add to Category:Commons screenshots (en). --Jarekt (talk) 10:08, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

Monuments template to pull relevant data from Wikidata
Hi Jarek, as you might know I added a lot of depicts statements to the various images of monuments. I'm thinking about how to make best use of this data like we do in Artwork and also Geograph from structured data. What I'm thinking about is a template that won't be used directly, but instead be included in templates like Rijksmonument. The first step is how to find the right Wikidata to get data from. The inclusion in Rijksmonument would pass two things: The property to look for (Rijksmonument ID (P359)) and the identifier (for example 19264 on this file). Based on that the code can iterate over the depicts (P180) statements and if the target has the right property/identifier combination, we have found the qid. On the example file this would return Grote Kerk (Q1545193). This would also cover having multiple inclusions of the monuments template.
Based on the Wikidata item an infobox like Creator or Institution should be constructed. What to include and how to make it look is going to be a puzzle with multiple versions. I would love to have a bit of recursion like we have for the location in Geograph from structured data to make things more discoverable.
- instance of (P31) with a bit of subclass of (P279) recursion (stop condition is going to be trial and error)
- located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) with tree like geograph (stop at country, prefix tree with location (P276) if it's provided)
- More focused location info like street address (P6375) / located on street (P669)
- Map based on coordinate location (P625)

- Multichill I am in Poland at the moment with kind of sporadic time schedule. I managed o finish this month's Commons:Photo_challenge and are still working on Artwork's materials code. I will be happy to help with specific Lua code, but I do not have good grasp of how is it supposed to work --Jarekt (talk) 21:46, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- Enjoy your time in Poland! It's just an idea without any time line. Weather is improving and things are opening up again so for me it's also on and off.
- We can discus it at some point in the future. Multichill (talk) 11:56, 12 June 2021 (UTC)

- Multichill, I started a task which is taking longer than I was hoping it would take. I am trying to prepare wikidata items for a list of works article based on Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (1885-1939). Catalog of painted works (Q106425660), but I seemed to bite more than I can chew. However if you have some specific logic in mind I can set it in lua. --Jarekt (talk) 02:27, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Tech News
- The next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 19 July.
Recent changes
- AutoWikiBrowser is a tool to make repetitive tasks easier. It now uses JSON.
Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage
has moved toWikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPageJSON
andWikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Config
.Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage/Version
has moved toWikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage/VersionJSON
. The tool will eventually be configured on the wiki so that you don't have to wait until the new version to add templates or regular expression fixes. [91]
Problems
- InternetArchiveBot helps saving online sources on some wikis. It adds them to Wayback Machine and links to them there. This is so they don't disappear if the page that was linked to is removed. It currently has a problem with linking to the wrong date when it moves pages from
archive.is
toweb.archive.org
. [92]
Changes later this week
- The tool to find, add and remove templates will be updated. This is to make it easier to find and use the right templates. It will come to the first wikis on 7 July. It will come to more wikis later this year. [93][94]
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- Some Wikimedia wikis use Flagged Revisions or pending changes. It hides edits from new and unregistered accounts for readers until they have been patrolled. The auto review action in Flagged Revisions will no longer be logged. All old logs of auto-review will be removed. This is because it creates a lot of logs that are not very useful. [95]

Private collection normalization for paintings
Hi Jarekt! d:Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Private collection has recently normalised the settings for WD items of relevant paintings (see this and this diff); can you please look at updating Module:Wikidata art to accomodate this? Thanks, ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 21:13, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
- ᴀlbanɢeller, Done I think, see File:Witkacy - Portret Edmunda Strazyskiego - 1928.jpg as a test file. --Jarekt (talk) 02:12, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

- ᴀlbanɢeller, William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne by Jean Laurent Mosnier.jpg does not have collection record for the present time only for the past, and Module:Wikidata art looks for collections that do not have end time (P582) qualifier. --Jarekt (talk) 21:42, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for clarifying that. Can you also look at an issue seen at Creator:Bassano Ltd, where there is a line break before the description where there shouldn't be? ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 22:52, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
- ᴀlbanɢeller, Fixed See [96] and Creator:Bassano Ltd. --Jarekt (talk) 02:23, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks again Jarekt. I was just wondering also if perhaps you could make the description field fill itself automatically (if not filled manually) from Wikidata, as can be achieved through Wdd? ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 02:47, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
- ᴀlbanɢeller, Majority of Creator templates are linked to "people" wikidata items and for those descriptions are created based on nationality and occupation. See for example Creator:Ansel Adams. --Jarekt (talk) 03:08, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

Commons:Photo challenge/2021 - May - Arthropods
Hi Jarekt!
- Arquus, I am not a biologist, but the rules of the challenge were: "Arthropods other than insects: spiders, crabs, scorpions, millipedes, etc." Which was translated to German (hopefully correctly) as "Gliederfüßern (Arthropoden) außer Insekten wie zum Beispiel Spinnen, Krebse, Skorpione, Tausendfüßler, usw." I was trying to be as clear as I can be that in this challenge insects were excluded, and I disqualified all the images of bees, ants and other 6-leged insects, including your photographs:
- I am sorry I removed File:Krabbenspinne mit Bienenopfer.jpg which also has a spider in the photo, which I did not see. Rules of each challenge are discussed and decided at Commons talk:Photo challenge/themes, for example this one was discussed at Commons talk:Photo challenge/themes/Archive/2019. My role is to create page with the rules and constraints chosen by the community, and enforce the rules. I am sorry about the confusion about the rules, and the need to remove of images. I try to vary rarely disqualify images or votes. I hope you will participate in Commons_talk:Photo_challenge/themes#Insect when it runs. --Jarekt (talk) 03:02, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
- Jarekt! Thank you for your quick answer. I am afraid that the German translation lead to the confusion. It would have been better to write it exactly like in English language: "Gliederfüßern (Arthropoden) außer Insekten: Spinnen, Krebse, Skorpione, Tausendfüßler, usw.
- "wie zum Beispiel" would in German language refer to "Insekten" and mean, that "Spinnen, Krebse, Skorpione, Tausendfüßler" are included in the insect group! That made the confusion for me and probably also for a lot of other photographers.
- There were a lot of very good photographs in this photo_challenge, better than mine, so it is not really a problem for me. Of course I will participate on all future photo_challenges and follow the rules! To use the correct codes is a little bit difficult for me, sorry! 10:58, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
Flipped height/width
Hi Jarek, I noticed these edits. Maybe update Size to put File:Carl Blechen - Blick auf Dächer und Gärten - Google Art Project.jpg in a category when this happens? Multichill (talk) 17:29, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill, that is doable. So, maybe a category triggered by module:size to detect cases where
(wikidata.width > c*wikidata.height and c*commons.width < commons.height)
and set "c" to something like 1.2 to avoid dealing with square paintings. --Jarekt (talk) 02:05, 7 July 2021 (UTC)- Yes, that sounds like a good approach. You can also just compare wikidata.width / wikidata.height with commons.width / commons.height and if it goes over a certain error margin, flag it. This also takes care of the problem of different or missing units. Multichill (talk) 08:58, 7 July 2021 (UTC)

Pattypan
Hello Jarekt, Thanks for suggesting an automatic way to add SDC statement to files. I wonder if it is possible to add some code to Pattypan tool. The code (for photograph template) does seems to be simple:
====
{{Photograph
|photographer = ${photographer}
|title =
|description = ${description}
|depicted people = ${depicted_people}
|depicted place = ${depicted_place}
|date = ${date}
|medium = ${medium}
|dimensions = ${dimensions}
|institution = ${institution}
|department = ${department}
|references =
|object history =
|exhibition history =
|credit line = ${credit_line}
|inscriptions =
|notes = ${notes}
|accession number = ${accession_number}
|source = ${source}
|permission = ${permission}
|other_versions = ${other_versions}
}}
====
${license}
<#if categories ? has_content>
<#list categories ? split(";") as category>

</#list>
<#else>
</#if>
If there is a way to add some line the code that will add SDC statement like "ticketWikidataPropertyNumber = 'P6305'"
for depicted, OTRS ticket number, description etc. it will be great. -- Geagea (talk) 22:47, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
- Geagea, I do not use Pattypan and do not know much about it, but most data which is in the Photograph template is related to some museum pieces (for which we might have multiple photographs) and this data should probably go into Wikidata. Photograph and Artwork templates can display a lot of properties from Wikidata. --Jarekt (talk) 02:22, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
- Let me ask you in a different way. Let's I want to upload this file with the PermissionTicket and want some code to add the property number (P6305) in the sameupload which add automatically to structured data. Is it possible? -- Geagea (talk) 08:59, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Geagea: P6305 can be added with QuickStatements to a list of files ( I can provide details if needed), you can also use AC/DC gadget to add P6305 to all or individual files in a category. Once P6305 is added PermissionTicket does not need a ticket number to display it as it can look it up in the SDC. PermissionTicket can be added to a file with VisualFileChange gadget using either "add OTRS" option or find and replace option. You can also use AutoWikiBrowser for find and replace tasks. I am not sure if I answered your question, but I hope it helps. --Jarekt (talk) 15:15, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
- I probably did not explain myself well. I know that I can use QuickStatements with AC/DC gadget, but want to know if there is a possibility to do it together with uploading a file (in the same one edit). Once I know to do it, I can use the trick in Pattypan. Anyway thank you for your answer. -- Geagea (talk) 18:54, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Geagea: I do not know of any way to change SDC during upload stage. --Jarekt (talk) 19:11, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Template:Artwork and titles
Hello, Jarekt, could you, please, take a look on File:Georges de La Tour 052.jpg and the effect of my change? I noticed in the version before that the text in the title bar (with light blue background) was broken, remembered that the docs of template Artwork speak about using template Title, but the consequence is even worse. Somewhere is a superfluous line break inserted. I thought it is in title template and made there an according edit, but this didn’t fix the display issue, so I assume it’s somewhere in Module:Artwork. — Speravir – 22:56, 20 July 2021 (UTC)
- Speravir, I had quite of few tries at writing core to extract titles properly from variety of templates. However there are always some cases which plainly do not work, and code changes often break some other case. One way, which reliably seem to work is to create Wikidata item for a given artwork and add it to the template, as I did in this case. Adding wikidata item can be done by clicking "+" (next to 2 looking glasses). --Jarekt (talk) 02:38, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, noticed and thank you for looking plus adding the WD object, but I actually think when this issue with the annoying superfluous line break occurs without Wikidata then the used templates (and/or Lua code if this is the culprit) should nonetheless be fixed. (Also I wonder for a longer time now, why we need Wikidata for things exclusively used in Commons when we have WikiBase activated here, but that's another story.) — Speravir – 23:48, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

- If your wiki uses markup like
<div class="mw-content-ltr">
or<div class="mw-content-rtl">
without the requireddir
attribute, then these will no longer work in 2 weeks. There is a short-term fix that can be added to your local wiki's Common.css page, which is explained at T287701. From now on, all usages should include the full attributes, for example:<div class="mw-content-ltr" dir="ltr" lang="en">
or<div class="mw-content-rtl" dir="rtl" lang="he">
. This also applies to some other HTML tags, such asspan

. You can find existing examples on your wiki that need to be updated, using the instructions at T287701. - Reminder: Wikimedia has migrated to the Libera Chat IRC network, from the old Freenode network. Local documentation should be updated.
Problems
- Last week, all wikis had slow access or no access for 30 minutes. There was a problem with generating dynamic lists of articles on the Russian Wikinews, due to the bulk import of 200,000+ new articles over 3 days, which led to database problems. The problematic feature has been disabled on that wiki and developers are discussing if it can be fixed properly. [100][101]
Changes later this week
- When adding links to a page using VisualEditor or the 2017 wikitext editor, disambiguation pages will now only appear at the bottom of search results. This is because users do not often want to link to disambiguation pages. [102]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 August. It will be on all wikis from 5 August (calendar).
Future changes
- The team of the Wikipedia app for Android is working on communication in the app. The developers are working on how to talk to other editors and get notifications. You can read more. They are looking for users who want to test the plans. Any editor who has an Android phone and is willing to download the app can do this.
- The Beta Feature for Discussion tools will be updated in the coming weeks. You will be able to subscribe to individual sections on a talk page at more wikis. You can test this now by adding
?dtenable=1
to the end of the talk page's URL (example).

Problems with the current Photo challenge
Hi Jarekt,
unfortunately there is something not working correctly with the current photo challenge - COA - and I did not find the right place where to fix it. When I submitted my entries, they showed up correctly on the subpage for the challenge, but they are not displayed on the main page of the photo challenge. Sorry for bothering you! --Kritzolina (talk) 09:20, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- Kritzolina thanks for letting me know. I will look into it. --Jarekt (talk) 23:34, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
- It seems to be OK now. --Jarekt (talk) 23:37, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The wikis that have Growth features deployed have been part of A/B testing since deployment, in which some newcomers did not receive the new features. Now, all of the newcomers on 21 of the smallest of those wikis will be receiving the features. [115]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- In 2017, the provided jQuery library was upgraded from version 1 to 3, with a compatibility layer. The migration will soon finish, to make the site load faster for everyone. If you maintain a gadget or user script, check if you have any JQMIGRATE errors and fix them, or they will break. [116][117]
- Last year, the Portuguese Wikipedia community embarked on an experiment to make log-in compulsory for editing. The impact report of this trial is ready. Moving forward, the Anti-Harassment Tools team is looking for projects that are willing to experiment with restricting IP editing on their wiki for a short-term experiment. Learn more.

Edit request
Hi Jarekt,
Can you fulfill my edit request of File:Flag of Hong Kong.svg ? (discussions) (Updated file: File:Flag of Hong Kong (fixed).svg)
I have changed the shape of the petals according to the national standard File:GB16689-2004.pdf (except for the angle of rotation which is 13°48' as required by the local law instead of 14° in the standard); and changed the shade of red to match File:Flag of the People's Republic of China.svg as required in both the national standard and local law.
Thank you--Mike Rohsopht (talk) 15:40, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- 45 new Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features. [118]
- A majority of Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features. The Growth team has published an FAQ page about the features. This translatable FAQ covers the description of the features, how to use them, how to change the configuration, and more.
Problems
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 14 September. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. [119]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 September. It will be on all wikis from 16 September (calendar).
- Starting this week, Wikipedia in Italian will receive weekly software updates on Wednesdays. It used to receive the updates on Thursdays. Due to this change, bugs will be noticed and fixed sooner. [120]
- You can add language links in the sidebar in the new Vector skin again. You do this by connecting the page to a Wikidata item. The new Vector skin has moved the language links but the new language selector cannot add language links yet. [121]
- The syntax highlight tool marks up code with different colours. It now can highlight 23 new code languages. Additionally,
golang
can now be used as an alias for the Go programming language, and a specialoutput
mode has been added to show a program's output. [122][123]

Recent changes
- Growth features are now deployed to almost all Wikipedias. For the majority of small Wikipedias, the features are only available for experienced users, to test the features and configure them. Features will be available for newcomers starting on 20 September 2021.
- MediaWiki had a feature that would highlight local links to short articles in a different style. Each user could pick the size at which "stubs" would be highlighted. This feature was very bad for performance, and following a consultation, has been removed. [124]
- A technical change was made to the MonoBook skin to allow for easier maintenance and upkeep. This has resulted in some minor changes to HTML that make MonoBook's HTML consistent with other skins. Efforts have been made to minimize the impact on editors, but please ping Jon (WMF) on wiki or in phabricator if any problems are reported.
Problems
- There was a problem with search last week. Many search requests did not work for 2 hours because of an accidental restart of the search servers. [125]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 September. It will be on all wikis from 23 September (calendar).
- The meta=proofreadpage API has changed. The
piprop
parameter has been renamed toprpiprop
. API users should update their code to avoid unrecognized parameter warnings. Pywikibot users should upgrade to 6.6.0. [126]
Future changes
- The Reply tool will be deployed to the remaining wikis in the coming weeks. It is currently part of "Discussion tools" in Beta features at most wikis. You will be able to turn it off in Editing Preferences. [127]
- The previously announced change to how you obtain tokens from the API has been delayed to September 21 because of an incompatibility with Pywikibot. Bot operators using Pywikibot can follow T291202 for progress on a fix, and should plan to upgrade to 6.6.1 when it is released.

Copyright status from SDOC
Hi Jarekt, we have been adding copyright information to structured data for a while. Is it time to start working on a template like License from structured data that will render the correct templates? We should probably make a clear decision tree it goes through and expand it over time. To start small:
- copyright status (P6216) -> copyrighted (Q50423863) (missing or anything else: Not implemented error)
- source of file (P7482) -> original creation by uploader (Q66458942) (missing or anything else: Not implemented error). We now know we have to wrap the license in Self.
- copyright license (P275) -> some Creative Commons license (missing or anything else: Not implemented error)
- The license (like Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (Q18199165)))) must have a topic's main template (P1424) (Template:CC-BY-SA-4.0 (Q15243492)) that links to a valid template on Commons (CC-BY-SA-4.0). We now know what license to render and we don't have to keep track of valid license templates in code.
- If the license has author name string (P2093) and maybe title (P1476), use that to construct the attribution (see for example File:Derelict looking barn, New Pound - geograph.org.uk - 2639195.jpg)
Coming to think of it, we could probably use Geograph Geograph from structured data as a pilot for this template. Multichill (talk) 17:03, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
- Multichill, I agree, it is time to write such module and thank you for the logic. I am a little concerned that at some point some info might be coming from Wikidata, for example for artworks, and that it would be a bad policy to allow pages not tracked by file history to influence file license. That was the big argument about not using custom license templates stored in user namespace. I am not sure if we need to think about it now, but we should have a plan for how are we going to handle that, because I am sure it is going to come up in the discussions. --Jarekt (talk) 01:40, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, license template changing without something in history might be confusing. See File:Hendrik Janssens - Gotisches Kircheninneres - 5997 - Bavarian State Painting Collections.jpg for a example on how to solve it. Multichill (talk) 11:07, 24 September 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- iOS 15 has a new function called Private Relay (Apple website). This can hide the user's IP when they use Safari browser. This is like using a VPN in that we see another IP address instead. It is opt-in and only for those who pay extra for iCloud. It will come to Safari users on OSX later. There is a technical discussion about what this means for the Wikimedia wikis.
Problems
- Some gadgets and user-scripts add items to the portlets (article tools) part of the skin. A recent change to the HTML may have made those links a different font-size. This can be fixed by adding the CSS class
.vector-menu-dropdown-noicon
. [128]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 September. It will be on all wikis from 30 September (calendar).
- The GettingStarted extension was built in 2013, and provides an onboarding process for new account holders in a few versions of Wikipedia. However, the recently developed Growth features provide a better onboarding experience. Since the vast majority of Wikipedias now have access to the Growth features, GettingStarted will be deactivated starting on 4 October. [129]
- A small number of users will not be able to connect to the Wikimedia wikis after 30 September. This is because an old root certificate will no longer work. They will also have problems with many other websites. Users who have updated their software in the last five years are unlikely to have problems. Users in Europe, Africa and Asia are less likely to have immediate problems even if their software is too old. You can read more.
- You can receive notifications when someone leaves a comment on user talk page or mentions you in a talk page comment. Clicking the notification link will now bring you to the comment and highlight it. Previously, doing so brought you to the top of the section that contained the comment. You can find more information in T282029.
Future changes
- The Reply tool will be deployed to the remaining wikis in the coming weeks. It is currently part of "Discussion tools" in Beta features at most wikis. You will be able to turn it off in Editing Preferences. See the list of wikis. [130]

Hi Jarekt, I hope this finds you well? Please could you kindly remove the first upload which is on the above file (the second upload is OK). The reason I ask is that the first upload contains a full representation of a drawing of a dodo dated 1940s, author unknown. I have been careful to use only unusable or small partial representations of that drawing in this dodo set, in case there is a copyright issue, but on this image file I initially uploaded an uncut version of it by mistake. Recent changes
- A more efficient way of sending changes from Wikidata to Wikimedia wikis that show them has been enabled for the following 10 wikis: mediawiki.org, the Italian, Catalan, Hebrew and Vietnamese Wikipedias, French Wikisource, and English Wikivoygage, Wikibooks, Wiktionary and Wikinews. If you notice anything strange about how changes from Wikidata appear in recent changes or your watchlist on those wikis you can let the developers know.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 October. It will be on all wikis from 7 October (calendar).
- Some gadgets and bots that use the API to read the AbuseFilter log might break. The
hidden

for unsuppressed log entries about suppressed edits. If your bot needs to know this, do a separate revision query. Additionally, the property will have the valuefalse
for visible entries; previously, it wasn't included in the response. [131] - A more efficient way of sending changes from Wikidata to Wikimedia wikis that show them will be enabled for all production wikis. If you notice anything strange about how changes from Wikidata appear in recent changes or your watchlist you can let the developers know.
Future changes

Accessing SDC data
Hi Jarek. Are you aware of any way to do functions like Module:Wikidata#Examples, but with SDC statements? The basic #property and #statement functions are very limiting, because there is no access to qualifiers and they only return labels for items. But if I try using M-ids with the existing Wikidata module, which I hoped would work, it does not recognize it. Is there way yet to access complex data from SDC like we do with Wikidata? Dominic (talk) 19:12, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- Dominic, in my experience Module:Wikidata does not work. We can not retire it because some parts work and are being used, but other libraries are much better. Module:WikidataIB is great but I do not know if it works well with SDC. In theory most Wikidata access modules should work with SDC. but sometimes they do not. At some point I wrote Module:SDC tracking and templates like Template:SDC statement exist to simplify adding categories based on SDC. Also Module:Information does have a lot of exposed functions for scraping SDC data used by Information template. --Jarekt (talk) 01:59, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Invitation to submit a session proposal to WikidataCon 2021 (deadline 20 October)
Hi. I'm writing to you as a co-curator of the 'Sister projects' track along with Susanna Ånäs for WikidataCon 2021, which will take place online on 29-31 October 2021. The conference website is at [135].
We would like to invite you to submit a session proposal to the track, specifically a lightning talk about how SDC is used in information templates on file pages here on Commons, and possibly also on modelling copyright for the Commons. We would also love to hear about any other work you are doing, or would like to do in the future, that relates to Wikidata and its sister projects.
If you are interested, you can find information about how to submit a session proposal at [136], and you can access the submission form at [137]. Please submit a session proposal through the Pretalx process so that we can review and schedule it appropriately - and make sure to mark it as a 'Sister projects' track proposal. Please note that we cannot accept a session outside of the Pretalx process. We also encourage you to submit talks to other tracks if you are interested!
Note that the deadline for submitting proposals is the 20th October - sorry for the short notice! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 14:32, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
- Mike, thanks for the invite, I did not know about WikidataCon, and was off the grid climbing around w:Bishop, California last week. I agree that SDC use in Information template or Wikidata and SDC use in Artwork templates would fit nicely into the 'Sister projects' track, Copyright modeling is also a good idea although I was mostly involved in copyright modeling on Wikidata (few years ago) and much less in SDC copyright modeling. I will add write some proposals by tomorow. However I would be more interested in short (25 min) presentations than in 10 min. lightning talks, since it is really hard to say much in 10 minutes other than we did something cool but I do not have time to tell you about it. Are there any short presentations slots left? --Jarekt (talk) 06:29, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Jarekt: Great! A short presentation may also be possible (can't say for sure until after the deadline!), you could submit like that if you prefer. The general idea is that we'll have a series of talks on SDC from different aspects, perhaps followed by a short panel discussion of the presenters, but it depends on how many proposals are submitted in the end. (P.S. envious that you've been around Bishop, they have some really nice radio telescopes around there! Hope to visit them again some time!) Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 06:48, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi Jarekt, I see that you have recenly edited Module:Creator.
It now appears to throw an error for Wikidata item calls which don't have P910 ("topic's main category") set to a value.
Error Message:
"Lua error in Module:Creator at line 829: attempt to call field 'parse_statements' (a nil value)."

National library of Israel id
Hello Jarekt,
The National library of Israel created a new authority control id - J9U ID (P8189) (J9). We still have the old NLI id - National Library of Israel ID (old) (P949) as part of the projects (including Commons) using the old id. Some of Wikidata items uncluding only the old id, some of them only the new id and some both of them. Eventully only the new id (J9) will stay but meanwhile the Authority control in Wikidata Infobox have to be changed - to prefer the new id (J9U) if exist and if not then the old id. It was already changed in he.wiki Module:Authority control - יחידה:בקרת זהויות. I'll appreciate if you can fix it. -- Geagea (talk) 08:40, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
- Geagea, I added support for J9U ID (P8189) to Module:Authority control. You can see it below as J9U:
--Jarekt (talk) 01:07, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you very much. -- Geagea (talk) 07:07, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- In a second look seems that there is a problem. For example Category:Amos Ben-Gurion. Id J9U ID (P8189) (J9U) exist and National Library of Israel ID (old) (P949) not. It should give P8189. In fact we should have only one of them:
- if J9U ID (P8189) (J9U) exist and National Library of Israel ID (old) (P949) not exist, we shold give P8189
- if J9U ID (P8189) (J9U) exist and National Library of Israel ID (old) (P949) exist also, we shold give P8189
- if J9U ID (P8189) (J9U) not exist and National Library of Israel ID (old) (P949) exist, we shold give P949.
- Sorry for so much trouble.-- Geagea (talk) 12:23, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- Geagea My changes were minimal and did not add any logic linking the two. I was thinking to keep it as is and maybe in a half a year or something I will just remove support for the National Library of Israel ID (old) (P949). That would be much easier. Would it be acceptable? --Jarekt (talk) 01:03, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
- I don't mind to have meanwhile both of them so you need only ot add J9U ID (P8189). In the next couple of weeks I will add J9U ID (P8189) to the tickets that have only National Library of Israel ID (old) (P949). So if this is your idea I'm ok with it. I will let you know when it accomplished. -- Geagea (talk) 07:09, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
- It's done. You can replace National Library of Israel ID (old) (P949) with the new J9U ID (P8189). There are still 480 items to be update manually. I'll appreciate if you also update this info to en.wiki, pl.wiki etc. Thank you for your patience. -- Geagea (talk) 22:40, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

- In a second look seems that there is a problem. For example Category:Amos Ben-Gurion. Id J9U ID (P8189) (J9U) exist and National Library of Israel ID (old) (P949) not. It should give P8189. In fact we should have only one of them:
- Thank you very much. -- Geagea (talk) 07:07, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
Authority control see the file. -- Geagea (talk) 08:40, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
- What you see in the file is Wikidata Infobox template written and maintained by user:Mike Peel. I do not think he is calling Module:Authority control so the corrections to that code will not change pages using Wikidata Infobox. --Jarekt (talk) 00:22, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Geagea: The place to request changes to Wikidata Infobox is Template talk:Wikidata Infobox. It uses a different system for showing authority control info. I've added J9U ID (P8189) to the sandbox, you can try it by using on the category pages. I can't do the logic of either this property or that property - you should do that on Wikidata itself by removing the old value when it's been replaced. Ping me in the deletion debate for the old property, and I can remove it from the infobox then. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 07:59, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
- Jarekt, Sorry for the mess.
- @Mike Peel: , thanks. J9U ID (P8189) is the new id. I already added the new id to all the items that have National Library of Israel ID (old) (P949). P8189 if full (115,947 links) and P949 missing some id's (77,611). The P949 needs just to be replaced with P8189. Who knows when and if the P949 will be deleted. -- Geagea (talk) 09:31, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Mobile IP editors are now able to receive warning notices indicating they have a talk page message on the mobile website (similar to the orange banners available on desktop). These notices will be displayed on every page outside of the main namespace and every time the user attempts to edit. The notice on desktop now has a slightly different colour. [141][142]
Changes later this week
- Wikidata will be read-only for a few minutes on 11 November. This will happen around 06:00 UTC. This is for database maintenance. [143]
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- In the future, unregistered editors will be given an identity that is not their IP address. This is for legal reasons. A new user right will let editors who need to know the IPs of unregistered accounts to fight vandalism, spam, and harassment, see the IP. You can read the suggestions for how that identity could work and discuss on the talk page.

Problems
- Sometimes, edits made on iOS using the visual editor save groups of numbers as telephone number links, because of a feature in the operating system. This problem is under investigation. [144]
- There was a problem with search last week. Many search requests did not work for 2 hours because of a configuration error. [145]
Changes later this week

Hi, When I try the solution explained there Refresh the category, then fork this query. First login and click "Submit Query" to get fresh results then cut the commands and paste into Quick_statements, I get quarry.wmcloud.org says Bad database name. Any idea? Moving a creator template to a different Commons category
Hi Jarekt. Please could you kindly help me with the above, because I have tried, but have failed to do it? I have just moved the content of Category:Julius Olsson to Category:Albert Julius Olsson, but I cannot persuade its creator template to move to the new category. Please help? Thank you. Storye book (talk) 10:01, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- Storye book, fixed --Jarekt (talk) 02:50, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, Jarekt. I'm a bit puzzled that the creator template still shows on the redirect (Julius Olsson), and that I can't see it on the new category Albert Julius Olsson. Am I missing something? Storye book (talk) 09:03, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
- Storye book, That was fixed by null edit to creator page (like adding an empty line), which is ignored but triggers full refresh of the page. Most categories based on wikidata or SDC do not update correctly when wikidata/SDC is changed. --Jarekt (talk) 13:51, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
- Woohoo! It's working now. Thank you! Storye book (talk) 14:47, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Prośba w sprawie wandala / trolla
Rzecz dotyczy usera "82.25.126.28, User:PolishBoyInUK, user:Gejzir.owski". Pozdro. 2A01:C23:951E:AB00:153F:592E:8690:7949 22:59, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

Problems
- MediaWiki 1.38-wmf.11 was scheduled to be deployed on some wikis last week. The deployment was delayed because of unexpected problems.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 December. It will be on all wikis from 9 December (calendar).
- At all Wikipedias, a Mentor Dashboard is now available at
Special:MentorDashboard
. It allows registered mentors, who take care of newcomers' first steps, to monitor their assigned newcomers' activity. It is part of the Growth features. You can learn more about activating the mentor list on your wiki and about the mentor dashboard project. - The predecessor to the current MediaWiki Action API (which was created in 2008),
action=ajax
, will be removed this week. Any scripts or bots using it will need to switch to the corresponding API module. [153] - An old ResourceLoader module,
jquery.jStorage
, which was deprecated in 2016, will be removed this week. Any scripts or bots using it will need to switch tomediawiki.storage
instead. [154]

Revert Request for the Flag of Slovenia
Hi, I made a request in the flag of Slovenia's talk page. The current colors of the flag are based on CMYK values given in here but it is much brighter than the provided picture and the PDF provided in the same source(here). Just converting CMYK to RGB is not very accurate. For the flag of Montenegro(for which only CMYK values are given), we used the colors from the provided document rather than the given CMYK values because it was too bright. I have actually uploaded that flag with CMYK so we can see the difference. For Slovenia, the PDF is quite clear and I think we should follow that. There already is a version that uses the PDF colors in the file history and it just needs to be reverted. I think the flag of Montenegro is a good precedent to do just that.

So please revert the file. Kamran.nef (talk) 09:33, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- There are now default short aliases for the "Project:" namespace on most wikis. E.g. On Wikibooks wikis,
WB:
will go to the local language default for theProject:
namespace. This change is intended to help the smaller communities have easy access to this feature. Additional local aliases can still be requested via the usual process. [155]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 December. It will be on all wikis from 16 December (calendar).

Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 10 January 2022.
Recent changes
- Queries made by the DynamicPageList extension (
<DynamicPageList>
) are now only allowed to run for 10 seconds and error if they take longer. This is in response to multiple outages where long-running queries caused an outage on all wikis. [156]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week or next week.
Future changes
- The developers of the Wikipedia iOS app are looking for testers who edit in multiple languages. You can read more and let them know if you are interested.
- The Wikimedia Cloud VPS hosts technical projects for the Wikimedia movement. Developers need to claim projects they use. This is because old and unused projects are removed once a year. Unclaimed projects can be shut down from February. [157]

Jacob-Emile-Edouard Brandon has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
