Flag of Mauritania
Hello. There is currently a discussion on whether the Mauritanian flag should represent its crescent the same way as before the recent added red band change, or represent it as a modified, flatter one. It seem there is more users advocating the first, including me, so I would like to change File:Flag of Mauritania.svg by File:Drapeau de la Mauritanie.svg, as the constitutional change never mentioned any change to the crescent, and so we should use the same one as before. Could you unlock the page so I can do so? Cordially.--Aréat (talk) 20:18, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Guanaco. An an en.wiki admin, I'd like to back up Areat in their request here. There has been a significant amount of disruption caused by editors trying to deal with this in the wrong way (creating alternative files and socking to get that file added in various versions of Wikipedia). Correcting the main file would help put a stop to this. Cheers, Number 57 (talk) 22:34, 15 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Guanaco: So, could you please unlock the page? --Aréat (talk) 19:54, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data - development update, March 2019
This text is also posted on the Structured Data hub talk page. You can reply there with questions, comments, or concerns.
A development update for the current work by the Structured Data on Commons team:
After the release of multilingual file captions, work began on getting depicts and other statements ready for release. These were originally scheduled for release in February and into March, however there are currently two major blockers to finishing this work (T215642, T217157). We will know more next week about when depicts and statements can likely be ready for testing and then release; until then I've tentatively updated the release schedule.
Once the depicts feature is ready for testing, it will take place in two stages on TestCommons. The first is checking the very basics; is the design comfortable, how does the simple workflow of adding/editing/removing statements work, and building up help and process pages from there. The second part is a more detailed test of depicts and other statements, checking the edge-case examples of using the features, bugs that did not come up during simple testing, etc. Additionally we'll be looking with the community for bugs in interaction with bots, gadgets, and other scripts once the features are live on Commons. Please let me know if you're interesting in helping test and fix these bugs if they show up upon release, it is really hard to find them in a test environment or, in some cases, bugs won't show up in a testing environment at all.
One new thing is definitely coming within the next few weeks, pending testing: the ability to search for captions. This is done using the inlabel
keyword in search strings, and will be the first step in helping users find content that is specifically structured data. I'll post a notice when that feature is live and ready for use.
Thanks, let me know if you have questions about these plans. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:34, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
Structured Data - early depicts testing
The Structured Data on Commons development team has the very basic version of depicts statements available for early testing on Test-Commons. You can add very basic depicts statements to the file page by going into the new “Structured Data” tab located below the "Open in Media Viewer button." You can use the Latest Files link in the left side nav bar to select existing images, or use the UploadWizard to upload new ones to test with (although those images won’t actually show up on the site). The test site is not a fully functional replica of Commons, so there may be some overall problems in using the site, but you should be able to get a general idea of what using the feature is like.
Early next week I will call for broad, community-wide testing of the feature similar to what we did for Captions, with instructions for testing, known bugs, and a dedicated space to discuss the feature as well as a simple help page for using statements. Until then, you're welcome to post on the SDC talk page with what you might find while testing depicts.
Thanks in advance for trying it out, you'll be hearing more from me next week. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:59, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data - testing qualifiers for depicts
As you might have seen, testing is underway for adding qualifiers to depicts statements. If you have not left feedback already, the Structured Data on Commons development team is very interested in hearing about your experience using qualifiers on the file page and in the UploadWizard. To get started you can visit Test-Commons and chose a random file to test out, or upload your own file to try out the UploadWizard. Questions, comments, and concerns can be left on the Structured data talk page and the team will address them as best as they can. Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:08, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data on Commons - IRC office hours this week, 18 July
The Structured Data team is hosting an IRC office hour this week on Thursday, 18 July, from 17:00-18:00 UTC. Joining information as well as date and time conversion is available on Meta. Potential topics for discussion are the testing of "other statements", properties that may need to be created for Commons on Wikidata soon, plans for the rest of SDC development, or whatever you might want to discuss. The development team looks forward to seeing you there. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:51, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
Structured Data - testing other statements
You can now test using other statements for structured data on the file page on Test-Commons. Some datatypes are not yet available, such a coordinates, but further support will be extended soon. You can find more information about testing on the SDC talk page. The team looks forward to your feedback. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 16:41, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers
A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

- and special:abusefilter/207 is even worse, so I ahve turned it off too. If we need to tag files like that then it should be implemented at a tool level, and a phabricator ticket or github ticket should be requested of the programmer. The app writers have the ability and the skills to write tags into their apps, so we don't have to kill abusefilters. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:04, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

- First, you got mad at P199, then you got mad at me, and now you're mad at Guanaco? Why? You posted this on Portuguese Wikipedia which (according to en:Google Translate) explains to another editor that the files which were deleted were improperly licensed (i.e. copyvios) that had just gone unnoticed until now. You also posted something similar here as well. You also seem to note here that anything that's too similar to the original files is likely also going to be considered a copyvio. So, it doesn't seem as if you're mad because the files were actually correctly licensed and deleted by mistake, but that you're mad because somebody finally noticed the files, correctly deemed their licensing to be unsuitable for Commons and then deleted the files. You've got COM:LR rights to check file licensing which means you obviously you know about COM:L, etc., and Guanaco and PT199 just deleted files that they deemed to not be allowed per COM:L or needed to be taken care of per COM:OVERWRITE. I've already stated that my failure to refresh my browser caused me to mistake your version of the file as being the same as the one that was uploaded, but Guanaco caught that and took steps to fix the overwriting problem. So, again it's not clear why you're mad or what you think should have been done differently. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:23, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly: I only now noticed the drivel above. You’re still presuming too much, assuming too much, and feeling generally so smug of yourself. Let me tell again I have nothing against that behaviour — provided that one inerrant while doing so. And, once again, you are easily proven to not be. I am not “mad” at Guanaco, and surely I’m not mad at being “caught”: I didn’t upload any of these images and would rather do away with them in Wp articles — I merely try to go along with other users and accomodate their needs in a productive manner (which is something one cannot say about you, apparently). I rather expressed my disappointment at Guanaco’s very poor closure of the mentioned DR which includes a contradiction and a serious untruth (which was certainly written in good faith, but then again, I expected him to know better) — which contradiction and which untruth exactly, is something you will have to find out, or, better yet, give this matter a rest. -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 03:35, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- Guanaco, desculpa a confusão. De qq forma, gostaria de ouvir a tua opinião na matéria. -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 03:35, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi Guanaco.
Can you look at this file? It's appears to be an accidental overwriting of a free file. The original version was restored, but there's still a previously deleted older version in the file's history. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:42, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- There's also File:MetroLisboa-linha-amarela.png which looks like the same version deleted per the DR. How do you suggest dealing with that? -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:06, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Commons - Media Search
Greetings,
The Structured Data team is working on an alternative, image-focused prototype for media search on Commons. The prototype uses categories, structured data as well as wikitext from Commons, and Wikidata to find its results. The development team would like your feedback on the prototype, as they are looking to work to further enhance the search experience on Commons. If you have a moment, please look over the project page set up on Commons to find a link to the prototype and leave your feedback on the talk page. Thanks for your time, I'll be posting message similar to this one to other pages on Commons. The team is looking forward to reading what you think. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:47, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

Commons - Media Sarch, new feedback round
Greetings,
I'm following up on a message from earlier in the year about the prototype development for Special:MediaSearch. Based on community feedback, the Structured Data team has developed some new features for Special:MediaSearch and are seeking another round of comments and discussions about the tool. Commons:Structured_data/Media_search is updated with details about the new features plus some other development information, and feedback is welcome on Commons talk:Structured_data/Media_search. Media Search works in any language, so the team would especially appreciate input around support for languages other than English. I look forward to reading about what you think. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:05, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons!
Dear Guanaco
Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.
After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.
The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.
As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.
Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
Please take a short survey regarding UCoC
Hello Guanaco,
I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.
As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.
You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.
Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:53, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
Report
Hello, please take a look at this report: Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Files named with meaningless/disruptive names (motivated renaming was reverted without any valid reason) as these are serious everyday violations of the Commons rules and protection of meaningless names (in this case, Kalumny which translates as Columns). User Kazimier Lachnovič with filemover rights constantly performs violations of the Commons rules, creates instability issues and protects meaningless names, thus creates confusion. His Commons admin rights previously were lifted, but it is clear that it is not enough. -- Pofka (talk) 17:11, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hi Guanaco,
IS THIS OKAY... too much or too little???
I copied the Michelangelo Pietà photo by Stanislav Traykov for use in an educational display about the Catholic Church and gift to a Priest. Underneath the photo, I wrote:
"Jesus willingly suffered death by crucifixion for the salvation of all mankind" Michelangelo's "Pieta" in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City.
On the reverse of the photo (which I framed), where my title "The Pietà" is located, I put the following credits/license and copyright info:

Sound Logo
Hello,
I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.
