Wiki Loves Monuments translations missing

[edit]

Hi Giorgi Balakhadze, I noticed that some translations in Georgian are still missing for Wiki Loves Monuments. Can you provide them? See: Commons talk:Wiki Loves Monuments 2016/Upload campaigns. You can provide them on that page. Thanks! Romaine (talk) 17:59, 1 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Borjomi Central Mineral Park

[edit]

Hello! As you know, I'm contributing in WLM in Georgia. Could you tell me which park in Borjomi (on this list:LINK) is a Borjomi Central Mineral Park? The first one with number 478? Or maybe other park, with number 6307 or 6308? Borjomi Central Mineral Park is located here: 41° 50′ 8.44″ N, 43° 23′ 32.13″ E Thanks in advance for the help Halavar (talk) 14:44, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Halavar I think it is the first one (478). Thanks for your contribution there.--g. balaxaZe 19:29, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Georgian road signs

[edit]

Hi Giorgi! Thank you for your talk! I'm sorry for mistakes in Georgian alphabet mistakes in making Georgian road signs...I can't understand a single character in your alphabet, so I used Google translate for making text in your alphabet... Thank you for correct for me Georgian road signs...if you can't do it please tell it to me! :) If you know if there are other signs to make please write to me and I'll make them! Thank you a lot!!! And feel free to write me! Thanks! --Gigillo83 (talk) 07:11, 5 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Gigillo83 here at the bottom ► http://sagency.ge/index.php?m=185 you can find list of all and official road signs unfortunately web-site is only in Georgia.--g. balaxaZe 07:32, 5 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Thank you for your answer...as I can see, signs I've put in the italian page wikipedia https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segnaletica_stradale_in_Georgia (where are all Georgian signs)are quite all correct..is it? Thank you again! --Gigillo83 (talk) 13:06, 5 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Gigillo83 Yes, signs are good but some texts still remain incorrect I'll fix them, don't worry.--g. balaxaZe 17:04, 5 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong licence

[edit]

Please do not change the copyright licence from the one on Flickr to a different one as you did with File:Port of Batumi, Georgia.jpg which has a cc-by-2.0 but you made it cc-by-sa-2.0. The copyright holder's licence must be respected, so please be more careful in future. The rest of your uploads I looked at seem ok but if you uploaded other images that might also now be wrong please go back to them and correct the copyright tags. Thanks. Ww2censor (talk) 12:51, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you changing maps like this?

[edit]

Why did you change File:Europe religion map en.png and remove the Armenian majority population in Georgia? Armenians are the most common ethnicity there and so is the Armenian Orthodox religion. Also I looked at your other contributions and you change so many European maps of EU countries and remove the disputed parts except for Kosovo that you left with disputed border. You removed Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia , South Ossetia, Transnistria and Northern Cyprus. Some of them are even recognised by un members and you entirely removed them. You are Georgian and there is and obvious opinion that you have about those regions and you went and remove them from maps. That is not very neutral. Also you made maps of Eu-Georgia, EU-Moldova and EU-Ukraine but they are not members of the EU. You changed File:Georgia (orthographic projection with inset).svg too and changed those unrecognised parts of Georgia, but why? Change back all of the biased changes you did to the maps. I have never edited Wikipedia before and I don't know how to change any maps, I can only revert. --Gyumrilak (talk) 02:05, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Gyumrilak maybe because of your lack of knowledge of wiki policies you have those questions, first of all maps about EU were created without conflict regions so it is against policy to overwrite. Second it is free to create maps about EU Georgia or etc even if they are not members of it, sure it won't be used in articles at the moment but maybe some people find this useful for their presentations or etc. Third I edited File:Europe religion map en.png because its borders in Georgia were very incorrect, it shows all Samtskhe-Javakheti except Borjomi Municipality as Armenian majority that is not true (You can see this in our 2014 census). Now I'll try to highlight Ninotsminda and Akhalkalaki. If we want to be fear we must show true borders.--g. balaxaZe 07:44, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • And please assure good faith toward other users "because you are Georgian" means nothing in Wikipedia, when we change something we have explanations or policies and they have nothing with nationality.--g. balaxaZe 08:01, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WLM results

[edit]

Hello Giorgi, I know that you probably had no influence in the decision of the jury of this year's contest of WLM in Georgia, but still I wanted to express my surprise and disappointment about the fact that this picture didn't make it among the top 10. I even believed that it could end up quite high in the international contest and the feedback it got here in the project was overwhelming (23 supporting votes in 5 days is something you don't see everyday). It is, in fact a crispy 47 MP wowing image of a very relevant georgian monument. Really a pity that it was not highlighted (or just hightlighted as favourite). I usually don't express my opinion in public but in this case I feel I had. I do of course respect the jury assessement and congratulate the winners, but cannot really share this decision. Best regards, Poco2 15:57, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Poc I really share your opinion, personally I'm very upset even now. I saw your photo and yes it should be among top-10 or even in top-3 but I don't know what to think I've asked several questions to international organizers about the voting tool and etc. I had no single touch with photos and that's why I've no idea for what people were voting. One I can say that I am disappointed maybe more than you :/--g. balaxaZe 16:11, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That's funny. I had a problem in Poland 2 years ago. I couldn't get a prize because I didn't have a polish social security number! :( So, I just checked the rules again and didn't find anything in that direction. If you tell me you cannot undestand it, either, what should I say? Did the jury assess that image? maybe there was a clinch with the tool? Well, whatever, no clue, as said, disappointed, that's life. Poco2 16:23, 1 November 2016 (UTC) PD: Btw, you should crop the images with watermarks, as they will be discarded immediately by the international jury (I was part of it, I know what I say). Watermarks are not really welcome in Commons.[reply]
Thanks I will crop them. I asked "do we have a chance that after my protest something will be changed" but I received indirect answers that probably do not.--g. balaxaZe 16:40, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, ok, thanks anyhow, Girogi. Poco2 16:42, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Poc As for now it became clear that your photo was not included even in the first round so jurors simply didn't see it. Your photo is not an exception we have other missed photos as well. At the moment organizers are working on this issue. I hope for the best outcome.--g. balaxaZe 18:42, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
In a WLM category we have 6,893 photos but in the first round 6,494 photos--g. balaxaZe 18:43, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Giorgi, I see, buf, that's suboptimal. I uploaded my pictures very late (sept 29th), maybe the last 2 days where not considered. The good thing is that the delta is not very big, only 400 images and that could be checked in a short time window, given that the international org is open to that. To me now all this makes sense. Thank you! Poco2 19:24, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I must say, that I was surprised also, when I didn't find any of my images in the final TOP 10. First I thought, that I can't be in the finals, because I'm not a Georgian citizen. But now I see, that there is a bigger technical problem. Nice detective work Giorgi - thanks! BTW, hope to see Diego Delso's image from Sioni Cathedral in the TOP 10:) --Halavar (talk) 21:06, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
— Preceding unsigned comment added by Moahim (talk • contribs) 17:28, 02 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Moahim (talk • contribs) 20:21, 02 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi all. (ping Poco a poco) Just a quick update: because of this comment, and other signals, we have looked into Georgia more closely, and it seems that a number of images (around 500) was not included in the pool considered by the local jury originally, because of a combination of a human error of choosing the wrong category, and the fact that a number of images that were edited after the closing date were excluded. This has been addressed by running another selection by the local jury with only those skipped images, and then a second round where the top-10 of the original selection was compared with the top-10 of the skipped images. I have not seen the outcome of that final round yet, so I can't say anything whether the mentioned picture was finally included by the jury or not (which wasn't the point of the additional effort). I'd like to give special thanks to the jury for going through this last minute extra effort. Effeietsanders (talk) 18:34, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Giorgi, Effeietsanders, I really appreciate that last sprint of the jury to go for that extra mile, also the efforts or Giorgi to clarify the topic and last but not least the flexibility of the international organisation to accept those changes after the deadline. Inbetween the new finalists have been published, and I am a bit surprised about the result (by far not as when I decided to open this thread :) ). It's a pity not to see any of those nice pics of Halavar among the top 10 but now, and I think that it was the most important, the jury has assessed all participating pictures... Poco2 21:31, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Poc We took only top-10 from 500 pics. One of Halvar's photos was 13th (I liked his photos as well). This was first time for Georgia next time I am sure will be more settled and will win even more better photos.--g. balaxaZe 22:07, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, good luck to all those finalists from Georgia in the inernational contest! Poco2 22:10, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well good to know, that those 500 photos was added to the examination by the jury. Thank you all: Poco a poco, Giorgi and Effeietsanders for your great work and thanks for the nice words about my images and work here on Commons:) Well I must say, that I'm dissapointed that none of my photos was in the final TOP-10. Instead of fully participate in the Wiki Loves Monuments in Malaysia, I decided to spend lots of hours to participate in the Georgia's edition, identifying objects of cultural heritage in Georgia (that was not easy) and upload 289 images (see them all here: http://stats.wikilovesmonuments.cl/georgia?user=Halavar), whom most of them are now Quality images, and some of them also Valued images. Probably in the next year I'm gonna be in Georgia again (of course to travelling and taking lots of pictures) but I think I'm not gonna participate in the WLM 2017 in Georgia. With my work, in September I don't have lots of time, most time I'm not in home, so I think it's better to spend my time in other editions of WLM 2017. --Halavar (talk) 13:06, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Halavar This is what WLM 2016 jury decided don't be so disappointed this was first time for us and yes it was not all best. Next time we will take more time we will be more prepared and I am sure we will have more better photos (this is my personal opinion). I really appreciate your work and thanks once again for that!--g. balaxaZe 18:13, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Re:FoP in Georgia

[edit]
I thought that you did that 2 years ago. We all remember that mass deletion of my images... If you want to make massive deletion of images from Georgia, please do that not only with my images, but others too. Also, please add proper tags to the categories of copyrighted buildings, sculptures and other work of arts. I don't have a time to do that because I need to upload thousands of my images and I'm involved in the Quality images section. --Halavar (talk) 16:18, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Giorgi Balakhadze, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Protected areas in Upper Svaneti?

[edit]

Hi Giorgi Balakhadze, a friend of mine would like to participate in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 by uploading a photo taken in the high mountains of Upper Svaneti, on the Georgian side of the en:Kabardino-Balkaria Nature Reserve. Is this a protected area in Georgia? Thanks, --Gnom (talk) 12:10, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Gnom: all protected areas of Georgia are listed here [1] also there is a map of the protected areas [2]. Unfortunately at the moment there is no protected area in Svaneti, but I know that it is planned to create it.--g. balaxaZe 17:48, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings.

File:საქართველოს მუნიციპალიტეტების მოსახლეობის უმრავლესობა სქესის მიხედვით (2014).svg is a very interesting map.

File:Georgia (orthographic projection with inset).svg

[edit]

Greetings.

Can you add South Sudan in File:Georgia (orthographic projection with inset).svg, File:EU on a globe.svg, File:EU27 on a globe.svg and in other similar international relations SVG maps where it is missing (every map should be with de-jure borders, unless specified otherwise in their titles)?

I am adding South Sudan (as well as Montenegro and other possible missing updates) in the PNG maps in Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries and then remove this category after updating them. There were close to 1100 maps since I started to update these files on 1 March 2018, now it is reduced to less than 640 maps, but there is a long way to go.

In File:Désintégration du califat abbasside.svg can you remove the de-facto borders within Moldova (Transnistria) and Georgia (Abkhazia and South Ossetia), and include only de-jure borders, just like Serbia, Western Sahara and Cyprus are shown in the same map?

Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps myself, that is why I asked you.

Kindest regards.

Maphobbyist (talk) 17:56, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you are interested and have the time, could you remove de-facto borders (unless specified otherwise in their titles) and add the de-jure South Sudan in these aforementioned maps? Kindest regards. Maphobbyist (talk) 19:01, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Maphobbyist, earlier I could't answer because my IP changed to globally blocked IP, now it's fixed. For sure I can remove de-facto borders but adding the South Sudan border is harder, because to do that we need GIS software, GIS shape and known projection used in a map. Unfortunately, I don't have GIS shapes for these maps and I don't know their projection. I think it will be better to ask their authors or co-authors to do that.--g. balaxaZe 06:10, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your updates! As I am a totally SVG illiterate person, I am happy with any change (and respect declines of users as well). If you have the time and interest, and stumble upon them, can you get rid of every de-facto border (.e.g. Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Crimea, Transnistria, Somaliland, Northern Cyprus, Nagorno-Karabakh, etc.) in maps where they are not required and over a very extended period? For instance, many SVG files that are linked to each other which appear at the bottom of the file pages like in File:EU on a globe.svg, File:EU27 on a globe.svg etc., have de-facto borders imposed, which are not required at all. Users with an agenda, like to upload or add de-facto borders on any map, even in historical and non-political maps. Kindest regards. Maphobbyist (talk) 15:25, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you also from my side for adding the borders of South Sudan. Could you also update the missing borders of Lebanon and Eritrea in File:EU on a globe.svg? --AdAstraPerScientiam (talk) 19:42, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Global Replace

[edit]

Why did you entirely replace the map that was used before, which you earlier tried to change and later renamed to File:Location of the de facto Republic of Abkhazia in Eastern Europe.svg, with your new uploaded map, which is also the version you tried to push for on the first file File:Location of the region of Abkhazia in Eastern Europe.svg? You claim that the new map is "the NPOV version", but making Georgia dark grey isn't necessarily the only NPOV thing to do, depending on the context. In some cases different maps will be appropriate. For example, on w:Kosovo, the map of Kosovo does not depict Serbia as dark grey, neither does the map used on w:Republic of Artsakh depict Azerbaijan dark grey, nor the map used on w:Northern Cyprus depict the rest of the island as dark grey. Same can be said about the maps used on w:Taiwan in relation to China, w:Somaliland in relation to Somalia, and w:Transnistria in relation to Moldova. What makes you think that the only NPOV thing to do with the de facto independent Abkhazia is to depict it as a part of Georgia despite the fact that all of these other de facto independent regions do not do that? You cannot just push the map you are more comfortable with on other Wikipedia projects. --Relignments (talk) 20:51, 22 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Good that you mentioned those maps, some of them are very good examples how badly wikipedia handles such issues. If you aren't aware we have WikiProject_Maps' Conventions where clearly said (and shown) that disputed borders must be different. You just can't show Abkhazia in the same way as Germany or USA (but you were pushing that). I'll rework all of them to meet the convention criteria for usage on WikiProjects. --Ⴂ. ႡႠႪႠႾႠႻႤ 06:30, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If you agree that disputed borders should be different then why do the majority of your maps of Georgia not include disputed borders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia? Also can you provide a link to the specific rule you are referring to? I also wanted to add that I wasn’t pushing for anything, I waned you to stop changing an existing map, as did many other users in the past, so don’t accuse me of that. --Relignments (talk) 07:39, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Maps can be with disputed borders or without them. If map contains disputed borders then they must be different then other ones. I've some maps with disputed borders and they are shown in proper way, not like you try to push. Also, I've explained that the map's current face under its title was misleading. Before in edit summary I wrote that It must be either renamed, replaced or changed (last is done), but you ignored it and just reverted my changes. After that my next step was renaming and replacing of it as I wrote earlier It must be either renamed, replaced or changed (last is done)--Ⴂ. ႡႠႪႠႾႠႻႤ 09:51, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Conventions are here ► en:Wikipedia:WikiProject_Maps/Conventions--Ⴂ. ႡႠႪႠႾႠႻႤ 09:54, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Now I'm confused. You're contradicting yourself. If maps can be with or without disputed borders then what's wrong with the border shown on File:Location of the de facto Republic of Abkhazia in Eastern Europe.svg being shown as not disputed, because it is just like your maps of Georgia show the administrative border between Abkhazia and Georgia as not disputed despite the fact that it is. You can't just follow certain policies when they align with your political views and claim that it's not NPOV when they don't. In fact, that starts to seem a lot like POV pushing. Judging by the opinions you published on your user page, this is also the view that you clearly hold and it seems that you are trying to push that on Wikipedia and on the maps here on Commons. Also once again I want to point out that the problem on File:Location of the de facto Republic of Abkhazia in Eastern Europe.svg was not me pushing for use of the map, it was me being against you changing it completely just as Dag13, Chipmunkdavis, Maurice07, Insider and User:Fry1989 did. --Relignments (talk) 15:50, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Is it so hard for you to understand difference between disputed border shown as INTERNATIONAL border and disputed border shown as DISPUTED border? Is it so hard for you to understand difference between these two? If it is, then I'm done here talking with you and wasting my time.--Ⴂ. ႡႠႪႠႾႠႻႤ 16:50, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And I'm confused by your "logic" that if one makes a map without disputed borders it equals(?!) to a map with disputed borders shown as international?? what a...
Maps can be with or without disputed borders, with or without administrative, municipal, regional and etc borders, the only border that stays is international border because international borders are the most important ones. But map cannot be with international borders + disputed borders shown as international borders. The End.--Ⴂ. ႡႠႪႠႾႠႻႤ 17:03, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm very disappointed that the course you chose to take with this discussion is your aggressive wording and outright refusal to continue the dialogue. Furthermore, as I am looking deeper into your upload history I am noticing a number of uploads and reverts that indicate you POV pushing on this platform. You changed the following files with the description "Rv of sockpuppet and per COM:OVERWRITE", however after reading w:Wikipedia:Sock puppetry I realize that nothing there indicates that you must revert all of the edits and uploads of users guilty of sockpuppetry. Plus, many of the maps that were not edited by sockpuppets before were still changed by you regardless, with the main, and sometimes only, changes being removing the disputed borders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Also after reading COM:OVERWRITE I realize that the point of the guideline is to not substantially alter existing files and keep the file the same or closely similar to its original upload, with the exception of minor changes. However, the changes that you made on many of these maps look nothing like the original upload with the layout still being completely different, and all you did was remove the borders of all post-Soviet breakaway regions (both disputed and sovereign borders, depending on the map), including Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as disputed borders like Crimea, despite in most cases keeping Kosovo and the disputed borders of Palestine. If you claim that you made your changes under COM:OVERWRITE to keep the content the same rather than the visual representation and remove the addition of breakaway regions, which was done in later versions, then it still seems odd that you would choose to keep Kosovo despite it also not being present on the original version. It seems that your main goal was to eliminate the borders between Georgia and its disputed regions, as well as any similar conflicts that relate to the post-Soviet space. PLus if you really were following COM:OVERWRITE then your actions on File:Location of the de facto Republic of Abkhazia in Eastern Europe.svg are a violation of that policy, because you kept pushing for a version that was significantly different than the original. You cannot just hide behind policies for the sake of altering maps to fit your political views just to break those same policies when your political views don't align with the original map.

In my opinion, many of those maps on that list shouldn't have made the breakaway regions have sovereign borders as they are already in wide use on Wikipedia, but you removed the disputed regions entirely to fit your political views. So, when you say that maps can be with or without disputed borders then why is it that you often remove disputed borders on maps regardless, especially the ones in Georgia, your country of origin. Another interesting example is File:Europe Location Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.svg. This map shows the former breakaway region in Russia, similar to the situation in Abkhazia, however when you edited it, your main priority wasn't to colour Russia grey as you did with the Georgia-Abkhazia example, but instead to remove the border of Abkhazia shown on the map. This clearly shows that you edit maps in accordance with your political motivations rather than the Commons guidelines you claim to follow. There are also examples of maps where you tried to remove Abkhazia and South Ossetia, such as File:Europe-Georgia.svg, File:Caucasus locator map.png, File:United Ossetia.svg and File:Flag map of Georgia, without Abkhazia and South Ossetia.png, but you were reverted by other users, so I will not go too much in depth with them. This is clearly a long history of POV pushing that you have been doing here on Commons where you try and eliminate the disputed borders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia due to your political beliefs, as stated on your user page. Due to your refusal to continue the discussion, as well as the extent of the issue, I find it necessary to notify an administrator. --Relignments (talk) 17:27, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Oh and one more, if you think that Russian occupation of the internationally recognized territories of Georgia is a "simply my opinion" then read this article and related materials en:Occupied territories of Georgia again and again, again and again. Move of

I'm unable to see any prior discussion of the move of File:Flag of Northern Ireland.svg to File:Ulster Banner.svg. The move has broken en:Template:Country data Northern Ireland. Cabayi (talk) 13:10, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Cabayi: for that rename my decision mainly was based on the article Ulster Banner. It says that The Ulster Banner[1] (Irish: Meirge Uladh) is a heraldic banner taken from the former coat of arms of Northern Ireland. [...] It was the flag of the former Government of Northern Ireland and common flag of Northern Ireland from 1953 until that government was abolished in 1972. [...] Since 1972, the Ulster Banner has had no official status and is not used by the current Northern Ireland government or by the British government. So, a title Flag of Northern Ireland was misleading.--Ⴂ. ႡႠႪႠႾႠႻႤ 14:49, 13 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Russian map

[edit]

Hey Giorgi,

I added the Donbass to your map File:Russian_language_status_and_proficiency_in_the_World.svg. Because it's shrunk down from a different scale in the Donbass War map, the stripe pattern used in the other disputed territories would also be shrunk, and wouldn't look like stripes. I used another pattern, but it isn't a great match. Maybe you could fix?

The border should be good enough. I needed to stretch and skew the territory from the inset in the Donbass War map, and didn't do a perfect job, but all of the borders in the Russian-language map are rather crude, so that shouldn't matter much. The border has also been stable for years now, so we don't need to worry about constant changes. Kwamikagami (talk) 23:02, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. FYI, you might be interested in this article en:Geographical distribution of Russian speakers and the map that it uses, File:Proportion_of_Russian_speakers_by_country_in_2014_(0-50%_gradation).svg. It might need updating as well. Kwamikagami (talk) 20:16, 25 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I'm supporting You not for politics but encyclopedic.

He lied (any hint about his origin but it's tradition for him). Before 17-09-2018 on this map any borders in Somalia, India, Georgia etc. Maked redirect alternative maps & gone plurals on his opinion not god further. Whatever good technical intentions he would have been guided. He must read rules and don't waste works of others users.--Dim Grits (talk) 13:50, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.

Can you remove the UK and also inside the world map in the upper corner of File:EU–Georgia.svg?

Can you remove the de-facto borders inside Georgia, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Ukraine from File:EU-France (without insert).svg and inside Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine from File:World-EU-France.svg?

Can you remove the UK and add the border of South Sudan inside the world map in the corner of File:EU-Ireland highlighted.svg and File:Europe location EU.svg?

Can you add the border of South Sudan inside the world map in the upper corner of File:EU-Cyprus highlighted.svg?

The updated File:EU-Sweden.svg or File:EU-Ukraine.svg can be used as a source.

I don't have any knowledege about SVG files, that is why I asked you.

Yours sincerely, Maphobbyist (talk) 20:32, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Maphobbyist: hi, I've updated File:EU–Georgia.svg, File:EU-Ireland highlighted.svg, File:Europe location EU.svg (without Sudan border). Regarding File:World-EU-France.svg & File:EU-France (without insert).svg original uploads are with those "de facto borders" so overwriting them isn't allowed. Maybe you could ask their author if he/she is willing to correct the maps. Otherwise we must separately upload new versions of those two maps.--Ⴂ. ႡႠႪႠႾႠႻႤ 09:32, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the updates! One small request: Can you also add the border of South Sudan in the lower right world map corner in File:Europe location EU.svg. It may sound trivial and a fuss, but it matters, because these maps can certainly be copied and uploaded with these obsolete borders and colorings. Thank you again for all your work. Maphobbyist (talk) 13:02, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Can you remove all the de-facto borders inside Georgia, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Cyprus in File:EU-France (without insert).svg? Thank you. Maphobbyist (talk) 10:29, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Maphobbyist per COM:OVERWRITE rule it is not allowed.--Ⴂ. ႡႠႪႠႾႠႻႤ 19:31, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. However User:De728631 removed the UK from this map and other maps, after I requested it. If that change can be made, is there not the possibility at all to get rid of these internationally unrecognized borders, which are not relevant to this map at all? Maphobbyist (talk) 12:12, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is something else. Removing a lot of elements from an image practically always calls for a new upload as opposed to changing one or two things. Moreover, where there are disputed borders we should have several alternative maps for people to choose from. So a separate file is order if you would like to get rid of internal/disputed borders on international-scale maps. De728631 (talk) 12:19, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for explaining it in detail. I will create and upload a near-identical PNG version of this map with de jure borders in the near future, in case users wish to use one without de facto borders - which is also not relevant to the topic. Maphobbyist (talk) 15:24, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Maphobbyist I will upload new SVG map. Regarding File:EU-France (without insert).svg at least we can request rename, because its title is misleading (not indicates disputed borders).--Ⴂ. ႡႠႪႠႾႠႻႤ 22:05, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Update request for the removal of Russia from maps, after the withdrawal of foreign companies

Here is a list of foreign companies which have withdrawn from Russia since 24 February 2022, and are constantly updated:

I added news sources for each company as well as this comprehensive source: https://som.yale.edu/story/2022/over-300-companies-have-withdrawn-russia-some-remain
The withdrawals are semi-permanent, and not temporary/short-term.

Can you remove Russia from the maps where I added news sources? These companies have pulled out of Russia, and will not return to that country for years to come, unless the war ends, Russian troops leave and the sanctions are lifted. The sanctions are not short term. 31.200.13.130 16:06, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi there! Thank you for creating the map of COST Members back in April 2022. Armenia has since joined, would you be able to update the map? Not sure how to do it myself. Thank you, Archives908 (talk) 16:00, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
