- Hi, album covers can only be freely licensed by their copyright holders, to give us a link to the visual of the album is not sufficient, exemple, "℗ 2015 Sony Music Entertainment Brasil ltda." has rights on the visual on this album. For all artworks (promotional photos, album/EP covers, screenshots....) that have been previously published somewhere, we need that the copyright holder of each artworks send a permission to OTRS, where you can read how to do so. Deletion
Hello, you have deleted two files that I uploaded on Wikipedia: File:Omne Poké Ball.png and File:Bursa Pokémon IV Generation.png that I took from Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon Franchise encyclopedia in english. It was stated that those two pictures were free of copyright and totally usable by the users. I am wondering why you deleted them, since they are part of the free content that everyone can find on Bulbapedia.net.
I thought I would request to undo the operation, but I did not understand how to "create an undeletion", I can't write to anybody and what i am requested to do seams difficult and too technical. Why? I am sincerely asking for your help with this.
Thank you in advance --YariDarling (talk) 17:32, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
- Hello YariDarling, those files are not allowed here, as you can read there in the section "licensing", this is a derivative work coming from Pokémon game, and it is allowed only for fair use, the copyright holder is the The Pokémon Company. When you upload a file here you give a license for your upload, however you have not the right to license a work owned by someone else unless they give themselves the permission. We do not allow fair use here on Wikimedia Commons, you can find more informations in com:Licensing. There is nothing we can do, it is useless to create an undeletion request. - A photo is an artwork protected by copyright law. When a photo is uploaded here then a specific license is added to the file, however only the copyright holder can give this license for his work. As the image is available in the web, we requires now that the copyright holder send an explicit permission to OTRS where you can read on how to do so, because we can not be sure that the uploader is the copyright holder. All this is done to protect the rights of the copyright holder. Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:54, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

US Rep pages
I'm confused. I uploaded a number of congressional photos from websites that have now been deleted because of possible copyright violations. I feel I've been singled out, as there are other images that have been posted for a longer period of time are still published and on wikimedia commons and wikipedia.
Photos I've uploaded that have been deleted or nominated for deletion:
- File:Brian Mast.jpg
- File:Tom Suozzi.jpg
- File:Mike Johnson.jpg
- File:Val Demings.jpg
- File:Nanette barragan.jpg
- File:Rep. Jack Bergman.jpg
- File:Don Bacon.jpg
- File:Tom Garrett Jr.jpg
- File:Jodey Arrington.jpg
- File:Claudia Tenney.jpg
Files uploaded by others using the same sources and still available on commons and wikipedia:
- File:Neal Dunn, official portrait, 115th Congress.jpg
- File:Charlie Crist, official portrait, 115th Congress.jpg
- File:Francis Rooney official congressional photo.jpg
- File:Lloyd Smucker official congressional photo.jpg
- File:Kustoff2.jpg (this appears to be a source that is not in the public domain)
Please either restore the images or tell me how my images are different than the ones I listed that are still available on commons...Pvmoutside (talk) 07:45, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- They are not different, I deleted the first fourth and nominate the fifth for deletion, thanks you for to have pointed those files to me. A lot of image are uploaded every days in Wikimedia Commons, and a non-negligible share are indeed copyright violations, if you find some of those copyright violations you will be helpful to nominate those files for deletion. Some politicians may use for their official profil/account on facebook or everywhere personal photos made by greater photographer that they prefer to the official photos made by government employees. There is no information on thoses facebook accounts about the true source of the images nor about the photographers of each photos. When there a significant doubt we can not consider those image in Public Domain. Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:41, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Congressional portraits are free
Thanks for deleting Congressional portraits, which are government work and thus public domain. Some member's official Congressional website do not provide the portrait on their actual site, and sometimes they only upload them to social media. This has been the case for many years. Deleting very obvious official Congressional portraits with absolutely no discussion whatsoever crossed a line that should not have been crossed. Gage (talk) 20:27, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- Agreed with the above. Unilaterally deleting longstanding images that are obvious official government portraits (which are public domain) without any kind of discussion or individual consideration at all is counterproductive at the very least. Connormah (talk | contribs) 21:22, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- Info I also deleted those ones : [2]. Social medias are not free until the evidence of the opposite. And I wonder how an image that have been uploaded only on a social media can be in public domain, and we don't know the photographers names, and thus if they are indeed government employees. Some politicians may use for their personal profil/account on facebook, or everywhere, personal photos made by greater photographer that they prefer to the official photos made by government employees. It is not because there is a USA flag in background that the photo have been taken by a government employee, this is IMO not enough to determine if a photo is in PD or not. If there is other valid sources, as evidence of public domain, then those source should be provided instead of links to facebook accounts which are not free licensed. Christian Ferrer (talk) 21:39, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- What is wrong with you deleting all these free pictures? This is vandalism, nothing else. You should be banned immediately. --Poliglott (talk) 21:44, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- You should not be a Commons administrator. Gage (talk) 21:57, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- But did you bother to check any of these before deleting them? Many have/had metadata clearly identifying them as US Government works and can also be found on the respective person's official government websites. (here's one for example: [3]). At the very least I feel that these should be undeleted and a discussion should take place over these. These deletions have affected hundreds of articles on en.wp in which these images have stood for years. Connormah (talk | contribs) 02:10, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- I confess I didn't check the metadatas, because usualy when an image come form facebook, the metadatas are "FBMD....", regarding the source, I copy and paste that I wrote above "If there is other valid sources, as evidence of public domain, then those source should be provided instead of links to facebook accounts which are not free licensed." But I'm going to take a look to the metadatas of the deleted files. And maybe too to open an UDR in order to have the opinion of the other experimented users on how to deal with those content. The better path would be to undelete so everyone can review them, not just sysops, then raise a DR if necessary. The original speedies were out of process, so follow process now. --Fæ (talk) 09:03, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

- Your images have been nominated for deletion with the rationale "Promo photos. No evidence of permission(s)". Furthermore I noticed in the EXIFS that the photos were taken with at least 3 different cameras. Therefore I applied the Precautionary principle, and my exact rationale was "per nomination, and taken with 3 different cameras, dubious own works". - In case of an image have been previously published somewhere, we require that this publication was done under a license compatible here, and we must verify this license with a relevant link provided by the uploader. Or we require that the copyright holder send a permission to OTRS, where you can read on how to do so. Christian Ferrer (talk) 05:25, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

- It will work only if the Flickr account has the right to license the image.
"Sometimes, users will upload an image from a website that claims to release it under a free license, but in fact that website is itself using the image without permission (and often without any attribution!). This is called license laundering."
We also delete the images when we see license laundering. Christian Ferrer (talk) 05:35, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Ticket#2016122810017217
Hello Christian,
I had written to you around late December/early January about uploading the new seal for the school American University of Antigua. The school's president received this today:
Subject: Re: [Ticket#2016122810017217] Wikipedia Copy Right Ownership Verification
Dear Neal Simon,
I have made the necessary modifications to the file page.
Thank you for your contribution to Wikimedia Commons.
Yours sincerely, Alessio Rutveno
Does this mean that it's OK to upload the Seal again? I don't want to prolong this any further, so I am writing to you with hope that you can provide me with direction. Should I have the president create a Wikipedia Account and upload the seal himself or will I be fine uploading it?
Thanks,
Sean — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shughes0610 (talk • contribs) 16:51, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
- Hello, no it's not necessary to upload it again, the file has been restored. See File:AUA COM Seal 200x200.png. Regards, Christian Ferrer (talk) 16:55, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
So, it's not up on the "American University of Antigua" wikipedia page. So, I do have to re-insert it into the page then? Again, I just don't want to mess anything up. Thank you for all your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shughes0610 (talk • contribs) 17:17, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Bonjour.

Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:49, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- Ok, merci bien pour éclaircir la question. Le ticket OTRS est ok. --Ruthven (msg) 11:54, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Titan beetle image
Was it you that edited the image? If so, thank you, and I'm grateful the scale has been moved in to save whitespace. However there remains quite a bit of whitespace which is not needed in all applications and would be better cropped further. Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:51, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Chiswick Chap: No it was not me, it's the author Archaeodontosaurus himself, maybe if we ask him he can modify a bit more the image. In all case if you think that any changes should be required, it's usualy better to contact the author because he can modify the image from it's source (usualy a RAW file), and in a case like this one he can move the scale. Christian Ferrer (talk) 16:54, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry to bother you. I think we can live with the situation now, it's better than it was. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:01, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Line scan camera
Hi Christian, you may remember me from FPC and QIC.
I'm applying for a Wikimedia grant for a line scan camera. This is a high-speed camera that only captures a single column (or row) of pixels, and I hope to use one for capturing scenes similar to the work of Adam Magyar [8], as well as rollout photos such as [9] (but of a much higher resolution than can be achieved with a typical video camera).
If this sounds exciting to you, I would really appreciate if you could endorse my grant proposal: meta:Grants:Project/Rapid/dllu/Line_Scan_Camera. Thanks! dllu (t,c) 20:36, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello Christian! I'll ask direct. IMO you have more experience. It's about COM:OVERCAT. There is a similar problem at Category:Black and white photographs. I requested to respect COM:OVERCAT (on the talk page - there are other old issues too). The category is too large and a lot of images are not member of the top category. I didn't have seen the hint "use as tag" for years because I never start with the top category. Do you think, "as tag" is useful? Do you think other users know the usage "as tag"? How can we handle this? Or should we wait for real tags, for example with structured data? --XRay talk 18:50, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
- I think you're right, categories and tags are two different things, and our category tree is very powerfull because we have COM:OVERCAT. I think we should also have tag but not categories "as tag". Christian Ferrer (talk) 19:01, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
