First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Deletion requests

When there are many images which you are nominating for deletion for the same reason please do a mass deletion request. Grouping them together makes everyone's life easier - the issues can be addressed at one location, and admins must close only a single DR. Thanks! – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 20:35, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Deletion discussion

I posted my reply about the Image:Punishment_By_Mosquitoes.jpg. There is an ORTS ticket. Also, a link to the origination site of this image has now been proided (perhaps that was the problem?). The original page has a copyright sign of Jamestown foundation. So, they claim the image to be theirs, and I do not see any reason to dispute this. Does it mean that the problem has been resolved? Thank you.Andrei Lomize 19:34, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

If you do not have any further arguments or questions, could you please withdraw this nomination? Thank you. Andrei Lomize 20:25, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello, You have made the following statement about me, which is wrong: "sourced to random website (unclear if connected to uploader), uploader has contributed other images that don't appear to be own work Calliopejen1 (talk) 14:32, 28 September 2011 (UTC)" Question: How can you say that the images that I have shared are not my own work? You have no reason whatsoever for this claim, you are only making an assumption, and it is wrong! It is quite frustrating that one would receive such random attacks, just for attempting to share some original work... Lovecostarica 23:36, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Mongolian_women.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. -- Fernando Estel ☆ · 星 commons es 20:28, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Building photo

Hi! I just noticed that a photo I'd taken of a wall along a main street in the town of Brookston, Indiana has been marked for deletion, and I wanted to understand a little better how copyrights on this kind of thing work. I'd understood that public buildings visible from public spaces could be legally photographed, but that copyrighted artwork upon those buildings might not be reproducible. In this case, though, I'm not sure how to determine if the work is copyrighted; there's nothing on or around it to suggest that it is and it was put up by the town for its sesquicentennial. It would seem that one should be able to legally photograph a very public display of this sort, but more guidance would be helpful. Thanks~ Huwmanbeing  14:30, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Bonjour,
Cordialement,--Patricia.fidi (talk) 07:42, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

WatchWithKristin images

Saw that you've uploaded a bunch of images from the Flickr account of WatchWithKristin. There's one teensy problem... the subject of the photo does not appear in the description and as a result it doesn't come up in searches on that name. I had independently come across the Flickr account and went to upload her shot of Kristin Chenoweth after doing a search on the name which came back with nothing. I've since fixed the description of a couple of them, but there's more that needs correction. Tabercil (talk) 22:44, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

oh, I thought the search also caught titles and they just hadn't been indexed yet. I'll go back through them in a little bit and fix them all. Mangostar (talk) 22:49, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
What you said is probably be true... I did a search just now for Kristin Chenowith and it didn't show either image of her, the one you uploaded or the one I uploaded. And when I went to search for Kristin in general, at the very end of the search was Image:Kristin på besøk, september 2006 045.jpg, which has the word "Kristin" only in the title and not in the description. I still think it's a good idea to have the subject's name in the description just the same. Tabercil (talk) 00:27, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Actually, nevermind, there is no email function. Here's his message:
"Hi,

I am a huge fan of wikipedia, hardly a day goes by without me checking an article. Please use any picture you like they are covered by a creative commons license attribution and non commercial. Regards, Julien <email removed>"

I told him that we can't use the NC license so he said do it anyway and he'll change the licenses, which I'm waiting on. Cheers, Master of Puppets (talk) 21:05, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello Calliopejen1/Archive!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 11:01, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Note: the following message was sent to the Purdue University:

Dear Shauna (borger@purdue.edu)

I would like to use two images found in the Purdue University Libraries e-Archives,: 1. Old ID Number xv.c.25, New ID Number b13f12i10 Title: Amelia Earhart and Frank Hawks and 2. Old ID Number xv.c.7, New ID Number, b13f15i13, Title: Pilot Frank Hawks in flight

to illustrate an article on Wikipedia about Frank Hawks. See: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Monroe_Hawks>

I am an author and researcher with nine books in publication and 13 films in which I was a technical director or consultant, and intend to use this publicly accessed article as the basis of an a scholarly work in the future, but have had some difficulty in obtaining images for illustration.

Can you release the two aforementioned images through accepting the following: I hereby assert that I am the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of WORK [ http://earchives.lib.purdue.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/earhart&CISOPTR=673&CISOBOX=1&REC=1] and [1] .

I agree to publish that work under the free license [2] LICENSE [images: choose at least one from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags/Free_licenses text: CC-BY-SA version 3.0].

I acknowledge that I grant anyone the right to use the work in a commercial product and to modify it according to their needs, provided that they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws.

I am aware that I always retain copyright of my work, and retain the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be attributed to me.

I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the content may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

DATE, NAME OF THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER

Bill ... in my other life, a meek and mild librarian... Zuk <wzuk1@shaw.ca> FWiW, it is exceedingly hard to find PD images but these should qualify. Bzuk (talk) 14:03, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

The Purdue Archives holds the rights to the George Putnam collection where the two images reside. They do routinely allow for the images to be used for publications. When Amelia Earhart's collection was sent to Purdue by G.P. Putnam, it allowed researchers access to a vast collection of her files, in which letters from Frank Hawks, (her first aircraft ride was with Hawks) were found. He sent Amelia a congratulatory letter after a record flight and included a postcard and photograph. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 15:42, 4 July 2009 (UTC).
The postcard image is autographed to Amelia, as is the photograph of Amelia Earhart and Frank Hawks, making these unique images that were different from just an ordinary item. From letters to Earhart, Hawks expressed his admiration and obviously wanted her to keep these tokens. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 16:38, 4 July 2009 (UTC).
Keeping the chain of events in place, Amelia would have owned the rights to the articles in question which would have reverted to her husband's ownership and he deeded the rights to the material to the Purdue University. FWiW, not trying to be difficult, but just trying to see if the images are suitable. 19:45, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
M, or C, whichever, is there some way that these images can be used? If it is a historically significant figure or event from the 1930s, isn't there some means to identify the images as usable. I am merely trying to "rescue" an article that had major issues with images in the past, and must have popped up in your radar due to the previous strained attribution notations. Just one comparison with the former incarnation of the article will show the extent of research and scholarship that has recently gone into this article. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 20:40, 4 July 2009 (UTC).

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Tropenmuseum restoration candidates

Hi Calliopejen1, as the creator of the page Commons:Tropenmuseum/Restoration candidates I wonder if you have any information whether a request for higher resolution images has been placed so far. It would be nice to have more Tropenmuseum images eligible for featured status. --Elekhh (talk) 01:36, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

No idea, unfortunately. I haven't placed any requests myself. Calliopejen1 (talk) 23:11, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Yiannis Tridimas en route to Yewbarrow.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thank you

Thank you for correcting the permission section of the license for a Florida crime scene photo which I had apparently uploaded without the permission. I appreciate that you helped strengthen the file to include this information. My76Strat (talk) 02:10, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

I'll be the first to admit I am not a copyright expert. I do notice that some of the images in this series are listed as copyrighted, while the ones we've uploaded are listed as unrestricted, so there does seem to have been some vetting of copyright status going on. My understanding is that these were often commissioned or contracted by the Harmon Foundation, in which case it seems possible they held the copyright and then donated it to the federal government. I'll ask around to see if we can get confirmation. Dominic (talk) 14:35, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

For your information, I have raised this issue at Commons:Village pump/Copyright#rtworks in the US National Archives and Records Administration. --Gavin Collins (talk) 10:49, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

hello why you have written "public domain" template on page of that file? why you have not given any approvement that it is indeed public domain? uploader has written that it is his own work and it is under creative commons. i believe that it is probably indeed public domain but it can also be fake. if it is fake, it is under creative commons, as its author has said ) . --Qdinar (talk) 07:58, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Islamic art

Hi Calliopejen, thanks for your reply over at the deletion page. Could you have a look at these and let me know if they are fine to upload, as photographic reproductions of two-dimensional out-of-copyright art:

[3]

[4] (1 b&w copy on Tineye)

[5] (from this page)

We are short on Islamic art, and these are examples of a well-known genre of verbal descriptions of Muhammad's appearance, used in Islamic tradition in lieu of images (the sort of thing people might hang on their wall). They would be good to have as illustrations for Muhammad articles. Okay to upload? Cheers, --JN466 01:21, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Yeah - since they are all by Hafiz Ozman, they're out of copyright {{PD-art}}. Please upload them! I wish we had more authoritative sources for them, but I have no reason to doubt that the attribution is incorrect. I also agree that we need more images like this. (I am sympathetic to the argument that these would be better to have in the Muhammad page.) My intent in nominating all the others for deletion was not malice, but just trying to keep copyright violations out of our articles. I keep meaning to go to the Harvard library to look at the book on Khattat Aziz Efendi that our old Muhammad image came from, to see if there are any other images that are definitively dated so we could upload them. I need an alumni card, though, and the hours for that are annoying. Maybe I'll try to get there tomorrow. Calliopejen1 (talk) 05:05, 5 November 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback; my thoughts exactly, and I'll get onto it. --JN466 07:10, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Why did you apparently delete that file without any deletion discussion? Like other files by this user, the file contained exif information, wasn't it evidence that the uploader is actually the author? A quick search on Google shows that Donald Leclau is in charge with web communication with the Belgian socialist party. It is thus not incredible that this guy took this picture. When I saw that picture (it was put on the Elio Di Rupo article on frWP) I thought is was too good and asked a question to the user (see his talk page). But taking into account the exif data and his apparent identity, I thought it was OK after all. I think it is in any case worth a discussion and not a speedy deletion. Sorry, just understood you did not delete the file but somebody else did. Asavaa (talk) 05:05, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

File: Polish Army Soldiers 1951.jpg

  • In short:
Well, this is exhausting, and can we really say being 100% sure that this image has no copyright protection whatsoever? All the users have been going back and forth on this issue, arguing obscure details, and the only thing that was confirmed... is that the law, and its application is very complicated, due to the ever changing political situation in Poland, and the out dated linguistic style used in its text. In the end, I doubt that this image has no copyright protection. After all, it's from a magazine, and I don't believe for a second that the publishers would allow their work to be printed without a copyright. Forget the public domain in a communist country argument, what about the publisher's work being ripped-off by some other printing house outside the country? No publisher is that naive to allow their work to be hijacked. So, can we get an expert to finally sort this out... or can we ask the person who scanned this image to request a written confirmation from the publisher that this image indeed holds no copyright protection.

At this point, most of us are just guessing as to the interpretation of the copyright law, and my initial request for delection was based on the fact that this image was scanned form a magazine. --76.118.227.161 00:09, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Delete photos-why?!!!

Why did you delete my photos?! Some texts are you just too bad and too little with the photos, I just want to improve service to Wikipedia, and all of my photos have a license and permission for public use. Please think before you delete photos that I set. I want to improve the operation of Wikipedia. Please!

Hello Calliopejen1, at that time I was accompanied by the owner/zoo keeper. She said that animals in her zoo (Tandurusa-Naemundung Zoo) were collected from all over Sulawesi. She identified this particular animal in local name as Tangkasi. None of the cages at the zoo were labeled at that time. I was accompanied by a local driver who later that day took me to the Tangkoko Batuangus Natural Reserve to take more pictures of the Tarsiuses.

Later back home, I saw a picture of Tarsius from Tangkoko in Commons, named as Tarsius Tarsier (File:Spectral Tarsier (Tarsius tarsier) -Sulawesi-6.jpg, now renamed as File:Tarsius sp. 1.jpg). In Japanese Wikipedia, Tarsius in Sulawesi belongs to Tarsius tarsier group (see メガネザル). Almost every documents I found also mentioning Tarsius in Tangkoko-Batu Angus and Tandurusa as Spectral Tarsier.[6] [7] [8], so that I uploaded all pictures taken at the Tangkoko Natural Reserve as Tarsius Tarsier, including the pictures from the zoo.

Please notice that my pictures were taken in 2008, long before Groves, C.; Shekelle, M. (2010). "The Genera and Species of Tarsiidae" was published. You can also help others by identifying the creatures in this video: File:Tarsier Tarsius sp..ogv. Just rename the files accordingly, as you see fit. Midori (talk) 10:13, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Indonesian FOP

I am not 100% sure of adequate explanation existing at FOP re the Indonesian situation over FOP - please dont take my comments at Gunkarta talk page as a refutation of your interpretation, but more a concern that there is inadequate elucidation at the page to necessarily delineate all that is needed to know. Please feel free to criticise my interpretation, I am not 100 % sure - but think there needs to be more to clarify the issues.. Thanks SatuSuro (talk) 07:11, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi, although you stated you didn't pick on me, yet I still get the impressions that you did picked on me and my uploads. As you see FOP of Indonesia was still not clear and debatable. Strict enforcement of the soo called FOP would cause wikimedia commons and creative commons to loss lots of Indonesian related images, and I totally against it. Most of my uploads are public domains buildings, images, monuments, museum displays, etc. Free for public to see and the FOP applied here just ridiculous. Please stop your zeal on images deletionism.Gunkarta (talk) 06:18, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

FYI I think the FOP info might be not current - problem my access to people who could clarify this are not easily raised by email, and it might take a few weeks to actually clarify my issue with the way the Indonesian FOP info is on the FOP page SatuSuro (talk) 00:02, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Thank you.

If you use the helper-the scripts, you will find the links next to the search box (vector) or as single tabs (monobook). They are named license+ and license-

Hi Calliopejen1, thanks for your application to be an image reviewer. The application has been removed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can review all kind of image licenses on Commons. Please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Backlogs include Flickr review, Picasa review, Panoramio review, and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

You can also add {{User reviewer}} or {{User trusted}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons! Natuur12 (talk) 22:04, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

The 2013 Picture of the Year. View all results »

Dear Calliopejen1,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

File:Laura Prepon.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Additional parameters for Template:Inaccurate paleoart

I see on commons we have a large number of the inaccurate restorations category filled up by models. I was wondering if you could create a new parameter for inaccurate models, that categorizes them in a category for inaccurate models. Another parameter that could be useful would be one for references, so that it is not just one users opinion on why it is inaccurate. Thanks for a reply to the modifications suggested.
